  • My Malaysia: A Day in Bentong, Pahang

**We’re in the midst of Malaysia’s Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) due to the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic ; and because we cannot fly out of the country at the moment, many Malaysians a re planning holidays within the country. It’s an unprecedented time to be a travel blogger, so I’m taking the opportunity to write more about my beloved country. Read more about my Malaysian travels here .

This post is on the day trip that I made to the small town of Bentong last year (pre-pandemic). Only about an hour’s drive from the Malaysian capital city of Kuala Lumpur ; it is famous for the durian, local ginger, and as a quick foodie getaway out of the bustling city.

Bentong

Bentong, Pahang

The town of Bentong is located in peninsula Malaysia’s biggest state of Pahang . I would say that it is the gateway to the eastern part of the peninsula — as you’d pass the town just before the start of the East Coast Highway (from the west) that leads to the eastern states. I grew up in the capital of the Pahang state in Kuantan ; and Bentong town has always been one of the food and rest stops during my road travels to and from Kuala Lumpur .

Bentong is also the name of the district — and includes the popular hill resorts of Genting Highlands and Bukit Tinggi . The area is dotted with lots of durian orchards that you can visit for a taste of the world’s smelliest (and most delicious) fruit; or if you wish, a stay for the night. My day trip however, is mainly focused on the Bentong town area and the nearby waterfalls.

The best way to get to Bentong is by car, because certain attractions like the waterfalls and some restaurants are located a little further away from the main town centre; and you can also have the option of stopping by the hill resorts or the durian orchards. Alternatively, you can also get to Bentong from Kuala Lumpur by bus.

Hooi Ji Wantan Mee

I visited Bentong with two of my girl friends, Abby and Diana. We started our drive from Kuala Lumpur early in the morning. Our plan was to have breakfast once we arrived in Bentong. The town was pretty packed with visitors because it was a Sunday; so we parked the car just before the start of the Bentong Morning Market street — and went hunting for food!

Breakfast at Hooi Ji Wantan Noodles

Breakfast was at Bentong’s famous Hooi Ji Wanton Noodles at the Yuen Kee Kopitiam . The place was packed and we couldn’t find a seat — and ended up sharing a table with an elderly couple. We ordered the popular dish; and also had a shared plate of ‘Yong Tau Fu’ from one of the many other stalls in the restaurant. I have to say that despite the noodles being springy and the dark sauce satisfyingly flavorful; I’ve actually tasted better char siu (Bbq pork) elsewhere. So the wanton noodles here didn’t really impress me as much as I expected. My bowl cost RM4.50.

Bentong Morning Market

The Bentong Morning Market only opens on Sunday mornings, and starts as early as 6am. We went to explore the market after breakfast. It takes up the entire long stretch of road across the Bentong town centre, and is actually made up of local vendors setting up their stalls right in the middle of the street. They sell everything from local produce, fresh meat and food; to clothes and household items. Some of the famous local items to look out for while shopping along the morning market are the Bentong ginger, Bentong Soy Sauce, tofu-puffs, as well as home-baked sweets and pastry. I decided to buy back a huge piece of ginger that was as big as my face!

TAK Ice Cream Corner

TAK Ice Cream Corner

Eventhough it was only late morning — the weather that Sunday was mercilessly hot and humid. After walking back and forth along the stretch of market; we decided to cool down with some icy cold treats at the TAK Ice Cream Corner . Located near the market; the hole-in-a-backstreet-wall drink shop serves everything sweet and frozen. From ice bowls like ice kacang and ABC , to fruit juices and ice cream. Between us, we shared a bowl of the TAK Special ‘fruit jelly ice’ for RM5.20, and a huge glass of chendol (with an ice cream on top) for RM4.50.

Bentong Street Art

After cooling down, it was off for more exploring around the Bentong town centre. We heard that the town has some street art to look out for, so we decided to hunt for those! We found a side street that is decorated with these 3D interactive murals; and had such a fun time taking pictures. The drawings mainly feature the things that Bentong town is known for — ginger and durian.

Lemang To'Ki

Lunch at Lemang To’Ki

And then it was time to eat again… for lunch! This time, we left the town centre and drove a little further out to Lemang To’Ki . It’s a very popular restaurant among the locals and domestic travelers; and is known for their lemang (glutinous coconut rice cooked in a bamboo stick). We could see them cooking the lemang over the fire, and it comes in different sizes that cost RM10, RM12 or RM13 per stick. However, we opted for the set meal (with a much smaller cut of lemang ), with either chicken rendang or beef rendang for RM5 per set. Other than the lemang , the restaurant is also known for their ayam bakar (fire-grilled chicken) that is served as a whole leg for RM7.50 — which we also ordered. I absolutely loved my meal!

Now, if those specialties doesn’t tempt you — Lemang To’Ki also sells other local delights like nasi campur (mixed rice), nasi lemak , fried rice, lontong (rice cakes cooked in banana leaf) and char kuey teow (noodles), amongst others.

Chamang Waterfalls

We were stuffed by the time we were done with lunch. So it was time to head to the next attraction to chill for a bit — the Chamang Waterfalls . The waterfalls is located about a 15-minute drive out of the Bentong town centre, and is a popular picnic spot during the weekends. Entrance to the waterfalls cost RM3 for Malaysians and RM10 for international visitors. There is a carpark available, as well as public toilets and changing rooms. It is pretty safe to play and swim at the base of the falls — and this is where you’ll find the picnicking families. Further up the waterfall is slightly more dangerous; as there are swift flowing waters, slippery rocks, and whirlpools. Reports of serious accidents are not uncommon, so thread with caution.

We spent about an hour or so at the Chamang Waterfalls, lying by the rocks and dipping our feet into the cool waters. It’s was nice as the natural foresty surroundings and the flowing water made the area a little more cooling and refreshing.

Bentong Durian

Bentong Durian

Later on in the afternoon, we left the waterfalls and headed back to the town centre of Bentong. On the way, we dropped by one of the many roadside durian stalls (that can be found along the Bentong stretch) for the most delicious fruit in the world! There are a couple of places in Malaysia that are known for supplying the best durians to the nation; and one of it is Bentong. The area is famous for their orchards, and the wide variety of durian it produces during the durian season. While at this random durian stall, we ordered one ‘Musang King’ and one ‘Teka’ variety — and had a wonderful durian experience, as always.

Kow Po Ice Cream House

Now, durians are known to be a heaty fruit (having too much always gives me a sore throat); so what else better to cool our bodies down than some ice cream. So we went back into the Bentong town centre for a treat at the Kow Po Ice Cream House . It is amazing how one of the most famous restaurants in Bentong is this ice cream place… and is therefore always packed with customers. Tour buses stop by here too!

Kow Po Ice Cream House has been around for more than 40 years, and made its name with its home-made traditional ice cream. The ice cream has got this old school taste (that reminds me of my younger years) — and I’d say it has more of the ice, than the cream. There are a variety of flavors to choose, from chocolate, strawberry and vanilla, to coffee and banana. I only had a single vanilla scoop on a cone for RM3.50; but if you’d like to dine in, you can also order scoopfuls of different flavors on a plate. They serve other icy desserts and light snacks too.

And ice cream ended our trip to Bentong. It was evening by the time we left town — and the road out into the highway to Kuala Lumpur got pretty congested. I guess everyone was leaving at the same time we were… so I’d suggest that during your visit, you either leave town slightly earlier or later at night. All in all, I really enjoyed my fun day trip to Bentong — just a simple, no frills, stressless, do-as-we-wished, eat-as-much-as-we-want getaway out of the city.

Bentong 1 Day Trip: What To Do In Bentong, Pahang

October 5, 2017 by summerkid_summergirl

Bentong 1 Day Trip Itinerary – Summarizing about 21 things to do, eat and buy in Bentong from our recent trip to this district in Western Pahang Malaysia.

So sorry but our memory about Bentong, Raub and Bukit Tinggi are pretty shallow, and we manage to mention only Berjaya Hill Resorts in Bukit Tinggi Pahang, Bentong Ginger and errmm..maybe also durian Pahang if you asked us about these two places.

With a long weekend that is too boring to stay just at home, and not into spending money at shopping malls, yet flying overseas doesn’t make the time enough for us, a short getaway to resorts, or interesting towns nearby is always a great option.

bentong.trip

Decided to have a day trip to discover Bentong Pahang on Malaysia Day. It was quite impromptu, so we wouldn’t say this is the best guide for Bentong day trip, but sufficient to keep your day fruitful in this small town, with noteworthy food recommendations from local friends. Things to do here is more than we thought off, and if you have more time, 2D1N stay is a great idea too.

Travel time from Kuala Lumpur to Bentong

Reaching Bentong from Kuala Lumpur is easy using highway. An hour of journey will take you off from the bustling city to a tranquil, peaceful town with friendly locals. We began our journey at 8AM and reach Bentong Air Kolam Panas by 9AM.

1st Stop: Bentong Kolam Air Panas 文冬热水湖

IMG_6325

Bentong Hot Spring, or Bentong Kolam Air Panas is about 2 Kilometers away from Bentong toll. It is a natural hot spring opened to public. Admission is FREE. Come here for hot spring bath, or soak your legs in hot spring.

IMG_6326

This pool-like hot spring is separated into two sides. Summergirl tested one of it and found it close to body temperature. Asking one of the locals why, they told us that one of it was hotter (*smaller one, where hot spring source comes from), while the other one is lower in temperature. Plus the water was colder after days of raining this week.

So do check the temperature when you are here, find the one that suit you and relax your tired feet. Suria Hot Spring Bentong is located next to it. There’s also Hot Spring Bath inside with RM10 per entry.

Address: (*WAZE Suria Hot Spring) 2527, Jalan Kuala Lumpur Lama, 28700 Bentong, Pahang, Malaysia. Admission: Free for the public hot spring

2nd stop: Bentong Morning Market 文冬大巴刹

IMG_6354

Another 30 minutes brought us to Bentong Morning Market / Pasar Besar Bentong, a nice place to enjoy the lively morning vibe in Bentong, blending into the daily life of the locals. The market isn’t very big with stalls stretching out long like no tomorrow for you to shop, but has everything a morning market should have – Meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, dried items, food, and even clothes! You can buy the ever famous Bentong ginger, Bentong Soy Sauce and some local produce here.

Address: Jalan Chui Yin, 28700 Bentong, Pahang, Malaysia Opening Hours: 5AM – 10AM

2nd Stop: Roti Canai Stall, Bentong Market 印度煎餅檔

IMG_6338

This stall always earn the liking from locals with their freshly made roti canai, and slowly getting fame that now even tourists queue for this. Business was at brisk when we first passed by, and after finished visiting the market, there was still quiet a number of them waiting for roti canai. Try out if you are craving for this local street food.

Address: 92, Jalan Chui Yin 28700 Bentong, Pahang, Malaysia Opening Hours: 6AM-12PM

3rd Stop: Thong Kee Coffee Shop 文冬溏记海南茶室

kiam-si

1+1, Geng Chau Ping, Kiam Si – If you have not heard before these gimmicky combi from Thong Kee Coffee Shop, is time to give it a try.

kaya-toast

We first knew about Thong Kee when they opened a branch in Pandan Indah KL, then another Thong Kee in Seapark PJ. The crowd is massive and we only managed to secure a seat there after visiting 3 times. Glad to be here at their Bentong shop finally! Coffee is a must, and the fancy combi mentioned above. Not to forget, Hainanese butter kaya toast and croissant butter kaya toast are awesome.

IMG_6379

Thong Kee Bentong is about 5 minutes walk from the market. Just walk straight along the Bentong Walk road. Look out for shop sign in sky blue colour.

Address: 4, Jalan Chui Yin, 28700 Bentong Town, Pahang Opening Hours: 6AM – 5PM

4th Stop: Wantan Mee from Ji Ki 枝記云吞面

IMG_6373

枝記云吞面 in Thong Kee Coffee Shop has been running their business for decades, currently by the second generation and going to third generation soon. Recipe inherited from the grandma, churning out plates of old school wantan mee with springy noodles topped with char siew, and wantan served separately with soup.

Address:  Thong Kee Coffee Shop, 4, Jalan Chui Yin, 28700 Bentong Town, Pahang Opening Hours: 6AM – 5PM

5th Stop: Handmade Dumpling 文冬水餃

IMG_6376

This dumpling is also from the stall inside Thong Kee Kopitiam. Priced at RM1.50 per piece, this dumpling is rated as “expensive” to us but when we bite through the filling, we doesn’t feel so anymore. At least, the filling is brimming with a good mix of minced meat deeply flavoured up with marination, and chopped vegetables that add texture. Huge and plump. Nice.

IMG_6366

Ordered pork noodles from the same stall too. Soup is alright, tender meat slices but overall not memorable if we were to compared with zhu yuk fan in KL. RM6 with egg.

6th Stop: Bentong Street Art Murals 文冬壁畫

mural-art

Done with breakfast and there we go, time for calories-burning-walking before the next food hunt. Personally feel that the town is doing quite well in promoting tourism in the area. These beautifully painted wall art mural is a good evidence. Colourful, well-maintained, 3D style, great for photography. We saw like 5, maybe have more.

Address: Along Jalan Chui Yin, Bentong Town, Pahang

7th Stop: Pillars and Walls with Written Artwork 文冬藝術

IMG_6408

It is hard not to paying attention to these masterpiece by 唐耀生先生, who is more known as “Professor” by Bentong citizens. Summergirl loves all these classic painting on walls and pillar, similar to those we saw in Hong Kong. Spot them around Chui Yin Road, Jalan Ah Peng, Jalan Loke Yew and more.

Address: Along Jalan Chui Yin, Jalan Loke Yew, Jalan Ah Peng in Bentong Town, Pahang

8th Stop: Ah Chong Chee Cheong Fun 文冬阿虫豬腸粉

chee-cheong-fun-stall

This chee cheong fun stall is located beside Kwong Sin Restaurant 廣信燒腊王, opposite to the Chamang Waterfall mural. Opening hours is around noon time.

chee-cheong-fun

Chee cheong fun is the highlight here, with sweet brown sauce and red hot sambal sauce come together for flavourful concoction with spicy kick. RM0.80 per roll, an order of 2 rolls plus some Yong Tau Fu, or vegetables stuffed with fish paste are enough to fill up the tummy. We had 2 rolls of chee cheong fun, 2 crispy fu zhok and 2 stuffed tau pok at RM6.40 in total.

Address:  Beside Kedai Kopi Kwong Sen (*opposite mural art) 92, Jalan Chui Yin, 28700 Bentong, Pahang, Malaysia. Opening Hours: Noon till sold out

9th Stop: Lan Ji Mix Rice Stall – Gong Sei Yong Tau Fu 文冬蘭記广西釀豆腐卜

lan-ji-mix-rice

It sounds weird to introduce a mixed rice stall and get you pin this on your ” Food to Eat in Bentong list”. But hey, they have some really delicious Gong Sei Yong Dao Fu. This stall is recommended by our Bentong friend, and she highlighted that this is one of the best places for Gong Sei Yong Dao Fu by far.

IMG_6461

We can’t judge much as we didn’t taste all Gong Sei Yong Dao Fu in Bentong, but have to say that this is really the best one among the 3 we had tried that day. The juicy, meating filling with meat and fish paste mixture are real good stuff. Humble stall with just few dishes for your mixed rice. Nothing impressive but certainly a hidden gem for superb Gong Sei Yong Dao Fu.

10th stop: Yuen Kee Cafe – Hooi Ji Wanton Mee 源记茶餐室 开记云吞面

IMG_6425

Many says that one the best Bentong wantan mee is at Yuen Kee Cafe. Sadly, it was already sold out when we reached. Regretted that we didn’t come earlier but when we read through some food blogs and food review platforms, we learnt that their standard has dropped rapidly after they gone famous around the internet. Not sure how true is this, or is it still worth trying out. Will be glad if anyone who has tasted this legendary wantan mee can give us some comments.

11th Stop: TAK Ice cream Corner 陳雪糕店

IMG_6430

TAK Ice Cream is about 200m away from Yuen Kee Kopitiam, you can just walk over. We walked for about 5 minutes under the scorching hot sun, felt so ready after that to indulge into their TAK Special. TAK Special is their signature, towering up shaved ice with lychee, watermelon, ice cream and condensed milk. Refreshing, not too sweet.

IMG_6433

Chendol is great too! Served in glass. It tasted rather pale on the first sip but as we mixed it with ice cream on top, yay, the sweetness turned right with magical “pandan kaya” like flavour. Recommended.

Address: 89, Jalan Chui Yin, 28700 Bentong, Pahang, Malaysia Opening Hours: 11AM – 7PM (closed Tuesday)

12th Stop: Bentong Tau Fu Fah Sdn Bhd (Quan Xin Tou Fu Fah) 全新文冬豆腐店

IMG_6464

A brand new but famous tau fu fah in Bentong, thanks to the power of social media. *Ah hem. A bowl of tau fu fah at RM1.50, and you can opt for normal white sugar syrup or ginger sugar syrup. Silky smooth, melt in the mouth, not bad but still prefer Teluk Intan Queen’s Road Tau Fu Fah and Ipoh Funny Mountain Tau Fu Fah. They also have fresh white tofu, soya bean and deep fried tau pok. Operation hours is until 4-5PM.

Bentong also has another Tau Fu Fah shop located in front of Bentong Pasar. According to our Bentong friends, both are not bad but for those who prefer a more old school, stronger bean taste (豆味比較重), the later could be your favourite.

Address:  85, Jalan Chui Yin, Bentong, Pahang Opening Hours: 6AM – 6PM

13th Stop: Mai Ya Tang 麥芽糖小店

IMG_6491

Malt sugar candy anyone? A stall located right across Quan Xin Tau Fu Fah, bringing back childhood memories with just few ringgits.

14th Stop: Yang Guang Bentong Trading 陽光文冬土產城

IMG_6411

Not too sure what to bring home as souvenir from Bentong besides Bentong ginger and Bentong soy sauce? Visit Yang Guang Bentong Trading located opposite to Thong Kee Kopitiam. Handmade Heoh Pneah here is not bad, less sweet on the filling. Ginger powder is recommended, great for women’s health.

15th Stop: Bentong Walk 文冬文化街

IMG_6359

Bravo for this Bentong Walk that turns this century old town livelyat night! Too bad we were there on Friday. Bentong Walk is available only on Saturday and Sunday evening. It takes on night market concept but leans towards a platform for youth to start their venture. A meaningful cultural street for shopping, eating, performances and art appreciation. Do stay till the evening if you happened to visit during weekend.

16th Stop: Kow Po Ice Cream Shop 球宝雪糕什雪店

kow-po-ice-cream

Similar to TAK Ice Cream Corner, Kow Po Ice Cream is a dessert cafe in Bentong famous for local street treat like ABC, Chendol and ice cream. Kow Po is prides for their homemade ice cream with various flavours such as vanilla, chocolate, coconut, pandan, banana. Chocolate is a must-try! For chendol and ABC, tastes are on weaker side comparing to TAK Ice Cream Corner. Suggest to go TAK Ice Cream for chendol and shaved ice, come to Kow Po for ice cream.

Address:  No. 2, Bentong Heights, Pahang, 28700 Bentong, Pahang, Malaysia Opening Hours: 10.30AM – 7.30PM

17th Stop: Bentong Park 文冬公園

bentong-park

You will pass by this giant “BENTONG” sign along the main road on your way to Bentong town. Next to it is Bentong park, where locals have their recreational activities, jogging, cycling and leisure walk. There’s also a mini playground in it. You can make a stop here and take pictures with the huge sign to keep as memory.

Address: Taman Rekreasi I city Marong, Kampung Sungai Marong, Bentong Pahang Admission: Free

18th Stop: Chamang Waterfall /Lover’s Waterfall 情人瀑布

chamang-waterfall

Chamang Waterfall or more known as Lover’s Waterfall is no doubt, the best attraction in Bentong for us.  Scenic view surrounded by natural beauty, lush greenery. You can walk around to find the best angle for your photo but please be extra 150% careful. Stay away from swift moving water. There have been many unfortunate cases happened here. Google Chamang Waterfall Bentong tragic accidents and you can easily get handful of information about this. Be careful, careful and more careful.

Address: (*find Chamang Waterfall in WAZE) 28700 Bentong, Pahang, Malaysia Admission: FREE

19th Stop: Kicap Bentong Sdn Bhd Soy Sauce Factory 文冬酱园

kicap-bentong-kilang

If you have time, pay a visit to Kicap Bentong Sdn Bhd and stock up few bottles of kicap for your cooking. As the name implies, 最好生抽 (Means Best Kicap Soya, with Thumbs Up Logo) emphasizes on high quality soy sauce made from finely selected beans. Their delicious soy sauce is spread by word of mouth, slowly getting fame beyond just the locals. You can easily get it in Bentong market, road side stalls and groceries shops too.

Address:  Lot 27, Kawasan Industri Bentong, 28700 Bentong, Pahang Opening Hours: 9AM – 6PM closed on Sunday

20th stop: 山中茶園 Purple Cane Janda Baik, TanaRimba, Bukit Tinggi Bentong

purple-cane

It was nearly dinner by the time we finished all these attractions. Decided to return to Purple Cane Janda Baik as it was still closed when we were there in the morning. But we were at no luck. The whole space was super crowded for an event. Massive crowd, parking was full in the compound and along the steep road. Left with not-so-happy mood. Above is the picture of Tanarimba Janda Baik taken from Purple Cane Facebook. Pretty right? We’ll come back again!

Address:  C1, Jalan Tanarimba Pine, Tanarimba, Kampung Janda Baik, Bukit Tinggi, 28750 Bentong,Pahang, Malaysia. Opening Hours: 11AM – 7PM (Tue, Mon closed) Website:  www.tearestaurant.com.my

21th Stop: Canton Kitchen 老招牌

DSCF2929

Saw Canton Kitchen Restaurant when we came down from Janda Baik. Some of you might be familiar with this well-established restaurants, as it also has few outlets in KL shopping malls, namely Glo Damansara, Sunway Velocity,Paragon Utama, Rampai Business Park. Founded in 1988, Canton Kitchen is proud for their concept of 以姜入菜, meaning uses ginger in many dishes, as Bentong is famous for their ginger.

canton-kitchen

Price is quite affordable. Total bill came to around RM45 for a good portion of Curry Wild Boar Pork Slices with Shredded Ginger (RM15), Deep Fried Tofu with Minced Meat and Chopped Long Beans (RM10), Ginger Chicken Bee Hoon (RM10) and 2 Lo Hon Goh (RM2.80 each). Highly recommend Curry Wild Boar.

Address:  second shop in Restoran Foon Lock欢乐美食饭店 (diagonally opposite to Police Station) No. 84, Kampung Bukit Tinggi, 28750 Bentong Pahang. Opening Hours: 10.30AM – 10.30AM

There are still many attractions which we didn’t manage to cover, such as  FELDA Musuem, Karak Wild Boar Hunting, Valley Agro Park Stingless Bee Farm, Bentong Gallery, ATV Ride & Sport Archery Bilut Adventure Park and more. We probably need an additional day to enjoy these activities to the fullest, and plus a nice stay in many of the resorts here! So for those who are up for 2D1N trip, add this to your Bentong to-do list. Ideal for family short getaway with kids.

Bentong Pahang - Roadtrip from Kuala Lumpur to Bentong

Bentong is a popular tourist spot in Pahang known for its good food and night markets. I had in the past visited Tropicale Colmar in Berjaya Hills and Genting Highlands but somehow never ventured further along Highway E8 leading to Kuantan.

On a clear Tuesday morning in July, I decided to visit Bentong and Berjaya Hills. The weather is great in Malaysia during July with clear skies and little humidity.

How far is Bentong Pahang from Kuala Lumpur City?

The drive time from Kuala Lumpur is approximately 1.5 hours depending upon the traffic conditions.  The traffic congestion clears up once you go past the Gombak Toll Plaza.

The road is uphill and you will need and you will experience plenty of slow-moving commercial traffic and old cars in the slow lanes. With excellent road conditions, the drive is quite enjoyable and you will pass a couple of small towns along the way.

Berjaya Hills Pahang

Berjaya Hills have plenty of vegetation and the heavy foliage on the hills along the freeway looks very beautiful. After passing the exit for Genting Highlands, other places of interest include Tropicale Colmar and Berjaya Hills Resort.

After passing the Bentong Toll Plaza, follow the signs to the city of Bentong. The area is relatively flat with plenty of businesses, warehouses, and sheds along the way.

11

The city of Bentong has expanded in the last two decades with plenty of new architecture, shopping malls and roadside markets. In the downtown area, you will observe plenty of stalls selling ginger and soy sauce . Bentong is known for its ginger plantation and soy factories that supply soy sauce across the country.

I drove to the old part of the city and parked my car near the Sikh Temple. The main commercial area o the old city near the "Bentong Walk" has plenty of restaurants and cafes along with other mixed businesses. Some interesting murals on the walls offer good Instagram photo opportunities.

Bentong Pahang

I got the impression that this place is quite busy over the weekend and the best time would be to explore Bentong on weekend afternoons and nighttime. The weekend markets are organized regularly that attract foodies and tourists exploring Pahang.

Visiting Tak Ice Cream Corner in Pahang

The shop was packed with local tourists who enjoyed amazing cream prepared by a middle-aged couple who managed this business.

Lemang Toki - an interesting local retaurant in Bentong Pahang

I had read great reviews about Lemang Toki restaurants located at the northern tip of the city of Bentong. The restaurant has a great ambiance with hallways constructed with wood and bamboo structures.

Lemang Toki in Pahang

There is plenty of sitting space and various sections of the restaurant's different dishes and desserts. The hot food section has a mix of popular local dishes, curries, and salads.

Lemang Toki Bentong Pahang

I enjoyed the rice baked in bamboo shoots served with amazing chicken with sauce ( Lemang and Rendang Ayam ).

Lemang Toki Pahang

This is one of the signature dishes of this restaurant. Chicken grilled over a wood fire is also worth trying. This restaurant is quite busy at lunchtime. I highly recommend visiting this restaurant when in Bentong.

Lemang Toki Pahang

Driving back from Lemang Toki after having my lunch I stopped at Masjid Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah located along the main road. The mosque has beautiful architecture showing the love of Malaysians for making such beautiful mosques. [ Read: Beautiful Mosques of Malaysia]. Exploring the beautiful mosques of Malaysia is one of the most enjoyable parts of my road trips to Malaysia.

Mosque in Pahang - Masjid Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah

On my way back to Bentong City, I stopped over at Thong Kee Coffe Shop to enjoy some hot local kopi before heading out to Genting Highlands. The cafe culture in Malaysia is great with cafes offering a blend of local popular drinks and coffee. Kaya butter toasts and croissants are also mouth-watering and good to ease your sugar cravings.

Where to stay in Bentong Pahang?

Bentong offers plenty of homestay options that are popular in the region. Visiting durian plantations, hiking, and outdoor quadbike adventures are also popular in the region. The hotels are relatively cheaper compared to Kuala Lumpur. The most popular places to stay in Bentong Pahang include:

  • Bentong Eco Chalet
  • Hotel Zamburger Bentong

Driving from Bentong to Gohtong Jaya and Genting Highlands

On my way back from Bentong, I decided to visit Genting Highlands Fashion outlets that are located near Gohtong Jaya. Spending the evening at Genting Highlands is a great way to wind your day. The trip to Bentong is also manageable if you are staying at Genting Highlands for the weekend.

During this trip to Genting Highlands, I observed a number of new hotels in Gohtong Jaya offering alternatives to staying at the hotels in the casinos which can be quite costly over the weekends.

Bentong is definitely a great choice for a weekend break if you want to explore the local flavours of Bentong. There are plenty of local dishes that can be tried if you spend a night in Bentong City. Bentong offers some quality hotels that are quite reasonable in price.

Top things to do in Bentong for Travelers to Malaysia

You can easily take a day trip for some top things to do in Bentong , Western Pahang, Malaysia.

An hour of the journey will take you from the bustling city of Kuala Lumpur to a quaint, charming town with friendly locals.

When you reach the expressway, the route quickly changes to a narrow, winding road weaving through thick forests.

The drive will take you over a barrier of mountains, the Titiwangsa Range (Malay: Banjaran Titiwangsa), which forms the backbone of the Malay peninsula.

Top things to do in Bentong

There are plenty of activities to do in Bentong for a day trip.

The best is to have more time for a 2D1N stay to enjoy the small town.

Interesting towns are an excellent option for the locals for the long weekends.

If you’re visiting Malaysia for the first time, you will enjoy this short trip away from the city.

I did a 2D1N trip, which included eating delicious Pahang Durian, eating local food in Bentong, drinking coffee, and staying at a resort with a river tubing activity.

Where is Bentong?

Bentong is a district in Western Pahang, Malaysia.

Selangor borders it on the west and Negeri Sembilan on the south.

Bentong is a mere 80 km drive from Kuala Lumpur  across the main range, Titiwangsa Mountains.

Genting Highlands and Bukit Tinggi are in Bentong District of Pahang.

Travel time from Kuala Lumpur to Bentong

Reaching Bentong from Kuala Lumpur is easy using the highway.

If you start your journey at 8.00 am, you will reach Bentong by 9.00 am.

The shortest route is 58 min (68.3 km) via Lebuhraya Kuala Lumpur – Gua Musang /E8.

Is there any famous food in Bentong?

While this small town in Pahang is famous for its Bentong Ginger, locally produced Bentong Soy Sauce, and Bentong Tofu Puff, other local delicacies are to try.

there are lots of local delicacies to try in Bentong

Bentong Morning Market

The first pit stop for visitors is the wet market, a hive of weekend activity.

You get to experience a lively morning vibe and blend in with the daily life of the locals.

Most shoppers are Malaysian retirees on a one-day tour of Bentong on a popular itinerary of shopping, simple meals, and sightseeing.

Business in the wet market is brisk over the weekends, as tourists mostly buy the Bentong Ginger and Bentong Soy Sauce .

Malaysians like the health benefits of Bentong Ginger compared to a poor man’s ginseng.

Chinese mothers take this during confinement to help dispel wind from their bodies after giving birth.

Local Fruit and Vegetables

The fruit traders are the friendliest I have ever met.

They offer tasting samples of freshly cut fruit you can try before buying.

I’ve tasted the best “super sweet” pineapples, which are golden, juicy, and fragrant MD2 (bananas comosus)

  • Bentong Ginger
  • Guinea eggs
  • Salak (Salacca endulis) or Snake fruit
  • Turkey Berry (Pokok Terung Pipit)
  • Asam Gelugor or Assam Keping (Garcinia atroviridis)

The traders are welcoming and helpful. Many would even share recipes on cooking the raw ingredients in soups, dishes, and even curries.

The people in small towns are proud that visitors admire who they are and what they have — the old town charm.

Get Your Durian Fix in Bentong

There are two places you could go during the Durian season. I prefer to head towards Bentong Wet Market.

The durian prices are reasonable, and you get to experience eating on makeshift tables and plastic stools by the roadside.

Alternatively, you could join a trip to one of the durian orchards.

Jimmy’s Durian Orchard is a family-owned orchard that offers 100% organic durians. The entrance to the orchard is free.

Travel Diaries: 3 Days in Bentong

A 30-minute drive east from the concrete jungle of Kuala Lumpur will lead you up green mountains and fertile valleys. Exiting the Genting Sempah tunnel, I bade goodbye to Selangor and said hello to  Bentong , the westernmost district of Pahang. Over the course of three days, I ditched the highway and travelled the network of old roads exploring the highlands to the gold-mining town of Bentong.

3 Day Itinerary in Bentong

day 1 – morning , 1) drive up to the refreshing hillside village of janda baik.

As soon as I got off the expressway, the route quickly changed to a narrow, winding road sandwiched in between thick forests. I made my way up to Janda Baik, a plateau of tiny villages, orchards and rustic retreats. The place was still thick with morning mist at nine, creating a mysterious atmosphere.

bentong travel blog

I drove to Riverside Janda Baik, a well-known picnic spot where bamboo huts and wooden chalets line Sungai Benus. The sound from the flowing river and rustling leaves created a calm zen-like atmosphere. Though the weather was still cold, I dipped my feet in the river to feel the refreshing cold water — I wish I could stay here forever!

 Day 2 – Evening

2) live the french fantasy at colmar tropicale, berjaya hills resort.

Now energised, I slowly made my way to  Colmar Tropicale , a French-themed village straight out of a fairy-tale. This hotel-cum-village is part of Berjaya Hills Resort, complete with an 18-hole golf course and a traditional Japanese garden.

My room was cosy and overlooked the verdant hills — a beautiful view greeted me when I woke up and bade goodbye when I went to sleep! After a quick shower, I went down to the “town square” for an evening stroll. Colmar Tropicale is based on its namesake in Alsace and, in my opinion, Bentong does a pretty great impression.

bentong travel blog

I walked all the way to the end of the village and climbed the watchtower to capture a bird’s eye view of Colmar Tropicale. The panoramic view made me feel like I was in a quaint little town in France instead of a thick tropical rainforest in Malaysia. By then, I was pretty wiped out so I scooted back to the castle-like  The Chateau Spa and Organic Wellness Resort  for a much needed full-body massage.

 Day 2 – Morning

3) get all warmed up at bentong hot springs.

After a hearty breakfast, I continued on the historic Route 68 where the view of the hills slowly transformed into the jungle. I was halfway to Bentong town when I chanced upon a signboard saying “Bentong Hot Springs”, and guess where I ended up!

There are two parts of the springs – one free for the public and the other privately run by  Erya by Suria Hot Spring . I decided to swim in the public pool, which had an option of either “hot” or “warm.” My aching muscles called for the former option. Fifteen minutes in this mineral-rich water was all I needed to replenish my energy.

 Day 2 – Afternoon

4) learn about bentong’s golden history at bentong gallery.

I hit the road for another half an hour towards Bentong. This former gold-mining town still retains its old-world charm with two-storey shophouses lining the main street. To find out more about Bentong’s past I went to Bentong Gallery on Lu You Street.

bentong travel blog

Bentong Gallery is a mini-museum set up in a century-old shophouse by the 3 rd  generation of Dong Shun Corporation. I was amazed at the amount of historical information and profile of community leaders who continue to make Bentong relevant till today.

There were many interesting artefacts like ancestral chairs and furniture. From real gold of the yesteryears to the golden flesh of durian today, Bentong is clearly proud of its gold mining history!

bentong travel blog

 Day 2 – Evening

5) hit bentong walk and hunt for its famed street food.

The street at Bentong Walk closes in the evening to make way for the weekly festival.

By 5pm, the street is crowded. Street performers and buskers spread out mats along the street and the food stalls were packed with customers. You can easily find local cuisines such as wanton noodles, tau fu fah and chee cheong fun! Besides the festival, Bentong is also famous for its street art such as this ginger cart mural!

bentong travel blog

 Day 3 – Morning

6) indulge in a hearty malay breakfast at lemang to’ki.

The next morning, I headed north of Bentong town to fuel up at Lemang To’ki. I got a shock when I arrived – at eight in the morning, the roadside restaurant was already full!

Lemang To’ki is a famous breakfast stopover for bikers during their weekend rides. Luckily, I didn’t have to wait for long. After 15 minutes, I got myself a seat and ordered all the house specialities: lemang, rendang and fire-roasted chicken.

The made-to-order lemang was solid and creamy while the equally tender rendang was a perfect compliment. I was really impressed with the roasted chicken which had a crispy charred skin, and juicy meat.

bentong travel blog

7) Hang Out and Take a Dip at the Impressive Chamang Waterfall

The breakfast of champions at Lemang To’ki had me ready to take on the world, so I went to the next stop: Chamang Waterfall.

Unlike other 90-degree waterfall drops, Chamang Waterfall is formed by a huge cascading drop and dotted with plenty of wading pools at the bottom. I took no time jumping into the river and water was just as revitalising as the river in Janda Baik.

bentong travel blog

I spent the rest of my morning admiring the majestic waterfall. Once the weekend crowd started to pick up, I packed my bags and made my way back to town.

bentong travel blog

 Day 3 – Afternoon

8) feast on the king of fruits at a roadside stall.

A trip to Bentong would be incomplete without eating durian, the district’s most famous fruit!

I was fortunate to be in Bentong during the durian season from July – August. Plenty of roadside stalls were selling this pungently fragrant fruit. I got hold of Musang King, one of the premium durian varieties found in Bentong and the neighbouring Raub.

As soon as the seller cut open the Musang King, my eager hands reached out for the durian piees. I took no time devouring each piece, which tasted as heavenly as it looked! Alas, the fruit was so rich that I could not finish it by myself.

bentong travel blog

 Day 3 – Evening

9) retreat to your very own private room at the waterway villa.

I packed the leftover durian together with some mangosteens, jackfruits and rambutans and headed back on the road to my final stop:  The Waterway Villa .

The Waterway Villa is a cluster of secluded themed villas of varying styles – stone, glass, bamboo and Balinese. I wanted something simple and close to nature, so I stayed at their bamboo villa exclusively built using bamboo, rattan and nipah.

bentong travel blog

The hut was cooling even under the scorching sun. Every step was greeted with a creak from the wood, but it felt so good knowing that the entire room was built using natural materials. I spent the rest of the day unwinding in my room followed by one last splash in the swimming pool as the sun started to set.

bentong travel blog

Bentong does not wallow in its glorious past and adapts to the modern time. The once-sleepy district is slowly waking up as fun activities and unique resorts quickly occupy corners of Bentong. So, for your next short trip, I recommend that you make Bentong your number one destination!

Malaysia can be considered as one of the most spectacular countries as it features some beautiful beaches, national parks, rainforests, and waterfalls all around the globe.

Fan Fact - Malaysia is divided into two parts, the eastern part, which is known as Borneo Island, and the western region known as Peninsular Malaysia. It is a must-visit destination and is loved by tourists from all over the world. Also, Malaysia has people from various religions and countries, and that is why it is so rich in terms of culture and heritage!

For all our friends staying abroad, Bentong is located in Pahang, which is one of the largest states in Malaysia. If you have heard of Pahang, you will know that it is home to our National Park (Taman Negara), which is so massive that it spills into two neighboring states (Kelantan and Terengganu) in the east coast. Now Bentong itself is one of the 11 districts in the state of Pahang, known for its green hills and durians (yes, the King of fruits itself).

Bukit Tinggi is also a small town in the Pahang district but has many amazing things to do. It is famous for horse Trail Rides, Japanese Village, and the type of food served here. There are numerous places to visit in Bukit Tinggi Malaysia, such as Karak Highway, Rabbit Farm and so much more!

BENTONG/MALACCA GETAWAY – 18TH TO 21ST JULY 2022

Day 1 - A group of 17 young-at-heart seniors set off for a short getaway to Bentong and Malacca. For some of us, this is our first overland trip away from Singapore since the countries' borders reopened, post Covid pandemic.

Bukit Tinggi Hills, Bentong

The coach ride took around 6 hours. After a lunch break at a Chinese restaurant in Seremban, we arrived at Colmar Tropicale, Bukit Tinggi, Berjaya Hills Resort mid-afternoon.

Although the rooms at the resort could be better maintained, it was refreshing to wake up to clear blue sky, greenery and tranquillity, in the morning – a nice change from our city life in Singapore. Wild monkeys were roaming around freely and do not be surprised if you are visited by one or two visit at your room balcony. Be wary though as they could become aggressive!

We had some free time to rest and relax in the afternoon. Dinner on both nights were at a Chinese restaurant in Bentong which is around 45 minutes away from Bukit Tinggi hills.

Day 2 - the trip included a visit to Bentong town (Bentong is located in the western part of Pahang state in Peninsula Malaysia). We had a walk around Pasar Besar Bentong market to purchase their local products. In particular, Bentong ginger as it is highly sought after. It is considered to be the spiciest and best ginger. Bentong is also reputed for its soya sauce as it is fermented naturally.

And we also had the opportunity to savour their local chee cheong at a coffee shop. It was smooth and silky and you could add yong tau foo to go with it. The sauce added, had a good ratio of sweetness and savoury, with a dash of chilly paste.

We then made our way to Chow Kai Pheng, a wholesaler for durians. This was the highlight of the trip for durian lovers. It was a treat to feast on 40 kilos of grade "A" Mao Shan Wang durians, freshly collected from Raub durian plantation that morning.

 Bentong-Malacca

Day 3 - It took us around 3 hours to travel from Bentong to Malacca. Malacca is a beautiful city that is rich with heritage buildings, ancient landmarks and colonial structures. You can see imprints of British, Portuguese and Dutch. In 2008, it was listed as an UNESCO World Heritage site due to the exceptional multi-cultural trading town and multi-cultural heritage.

We arrived at Malacca around noon, had lunch at a Chinese restaurant, followed by a 45-minute river cruise along Sungai Melaka. We could see the historic old town and buildings, and some buildings had art paintings. We resumed our walking tour in the city and Jonker Street, Chinatown. And we had Nyonya cendol for tea. It was tasty and refreshing as t was served with fresh coconut milk and flavourful gula melaka.

After checking into Hatten hotel in the evening, we went for an early dinner at Baba Charlie. We had Peranakan food and were served a variety of dishes ranging from chicken pongteh, assam prawns, sambal fish, sotong, chap chai, etc. The food was sedap and we had our bellyful.

We returned to the hotel early and had time for last minute shopping that evening.

Malacca-Singapore

Day 4 - After breakfast, we made our way home. It was a 3-hour journey and we stopped at Yong Peng, Batu, Pahat, for a rest; and more shopping for freshly baked pastries. We arrived in Singapore at around 7.30 pm.

All in all, we had a good time, thanks to Silver Horizon for organizing this trip and Jimmy Sim, the Tour Manager of WTS, for planning the itinerary, overseeing and ensuring that all went well, including a good choice of food and restaurants served.

Can you believe, we chalked up 850 km by road, in total! And ongoing discussion on a future trip for next durian harvest in 2023 ……………

Iyerweng was really crowded as we went there few years ago and most of the people there are locals and not tourists.

Could Trump Go to Prison? If He Does, the Secret Service Goes, Too

Officials have had preliminary discussions about how to protect the former president in the unlikely event that he is jailed for contempt during the trial.

  • Share full article

Several men and women wearing dark suits standing around an airport tarmac.

By William K. Rashbaum

The U.S. Secret Service is in the business of protecting the president, whether he’s inside the Oval Office or visiting a foreign war zone.

But protecting a former president in prison? The prospect is unprecedented. That would be the challenge if Donald J. Trump — whom the agency is required by law to protect around the clock — is convicted at his criminal trial in Manhattan and sentenced to serve time.

Even before the trial’s opening statements, the Secret Service was in some measure planning for the extraordinary possibility of a former president behind bars. Prosecutors had asked the judge in the case to remind Mr. Trump that attacks on witnesses and jurors could land him in jail even before a verdict is rendered.

(The judge, who held a hearing Tuesday morning to determine whether Mr. Trump should be held in contempt for violating a gag order, is far more likely to issue a warning or impose a fine before taking the extreme step of jailing the 77-year-old former president. It was not immediately clear when he would issue his ruling.)

Last week, as a result of the prosecution’s request, officials with federal, state and city agencies had an impromptu meeting about how to handle the situation, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

That behind-the-scenes conversation — involving officials from the Secret Service and other relevant law enforcement agencies — focused only on how to move and protect Mr. Trump if the judge were to order him briefly jailed for contempt in a courthouse holding cell, the people said.

The far more substantial challenge — how to safely incarcerate a former president if the jury convicts him and the judge sentences him to prison rather than home confinement or probation — has yet to be addressed directly, according to some of a dozen current and former city, state and federal officials interviewed for this article.

That’s at least in part because if Mr. Trump is ultimately convicted, a drawn-out and hard-fought series of appeals, possibly all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, is almost a certainty. That would most likely delay any sentence for months if not longer, said several of the people, who noted that a prison sentence was unlikely.

But the daunting challenge remains. And not just for Secret Service and prison officials, who would face the logistical nightmare of safely incarcerating Mr. Trump, who is also the presumptive Republican nominee for President.

“Obviously, it’s uncharted territory,” said Martin F. Horn, who has worked at the highest levels of New York’s and Pennsylvania’s state prison agencies and served as commissioner of New York City’s correction and probation departments. “Certainly no state prison system has had to deal with this before, and no federal prison has had to either.”

Steven Cheung, the communications director for Mr. Trump’s campaign, said the case against the former president was “so spurious and so weak” that other prosecutors had refused to bring it, and called it “an unprecedented partisan witch hunt.”

“That the Democrat fever dream of incarcerating the nominee of the Republican Party has reached this level exposes their Stalinist roots and displays their utter contempt for American democracy,” he said.

Protecting Mr. Trump in a prison environment would involve keeping him separate from other inmates, as well as screening his food and other personal items, officials said. If he were to be imprisoned, a detail of agents would work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, rotating in and out of the facility, several officials said. While firearms are obviously strictly prohibited in prisons, the agents would nonetheless be armed.

Former corrections officials said there were several New York state prisons and city jails that have been closed or partly closed, leaving wings or large sections of their facilities empty and available. One of those buildings could serve to incarcerate the former president and accommodate his Secret Service protective detail

Anthony Guglielmi, the spokesman for the Secret Service in Washington, declined in a statement to discuss specific “protective operations.” But he said that federal law requires Secret Service agents to protect former presidents, adding that they use state-of-the-art technology, intelligence and tactics to do so.

Thomas J. Mailey, a spokesman for New York State’s prison agency, said his department couldn’t speculate about how it would treat someone who has not yet been sentenced, but that it has a system “to assess and provide for individuals’ medical, mental health and security needs.” Frank Dwyer, a spokesman for the New York City jails agency, said only that “the department would find appropriate housing” for the former president.

The trial in Manhattan, one of four criminal cases pending against Mr. Trump and possibly the only one that will go to a jury before the election, centers on accusations he falsified records to cover up a sex scandal involving a porn star. The former president is charged with 34 counts of felony falsifying business records. If convicted, the judge in the case, Juan M. Merchan, could sentence him to punishments ranging from probation to four years in state prison, though for a first-time offender of Mr. Trump’s age, such a term would be extreme.

If Mr. Trump is convicted, but elected president again, he could not pardon himself because the prosecution was brought by New York State.

Under normal circumstances, any sentence of one year or less, colloquially known as “city time,” would generally be served on New York City’s notorious Rikers Island, home to the Department of Correction’s seven jails. (That’s where Mr. Trump’s former chief financial officer, Allen H. Weisselberg, 76, is currently serving his second five-month sentence for crimes related to his work for his former boss.)

Any sentence of more than a year, known as state time, would generally be served in one of the 44 prisons run by New York State’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

The former president could also be sentenced to a term of probation, raising the bizarre possibility of the former commander in chief reporting regularly to a civil servant at the city’s Probation Department.

He would have to follow the probation officer’s instructions and answer questions about his work and personal life until the term of probation ended. He would also be barred from associating with disreputable people, and if he committed any additional crimes, he could be jailed immediately.

Maggie Haberman contributed reporting.
