Improvements in engineering and technology mean even a supermini is capable of undertaking any trip you care to ask of it, but those who regularly cover big distances are likely to want something that’s capable of eating up the miles in supreme comfort, as well as having plenty of driver aids and tech.

But it’s no use a car being comfortable if it’s going to cost you the Earth to fuel. So our 10 best cars for long-distance driving combine refinement and efficiency, helping you arrive unruffled, but without having spent a painful amount on fuel.

Speaking of which, while diesel cars offer great MPG, we appreciate some may not be keen on a car that requires the black pump, so have included a variety of powertrains here.

In time, electric cars will become more popular for long-distance driving as range and charging infrastructure improve, but for now most people who undertake regular long journeys will be better-suited to petrol and diesel models. We’ve included a couple of the best EVs for long-distance drivers, though, because if you can charge at home and can avoid pricey public charging too often they should work out cheaper in the long run…

Here are 10 of the best cars for long-distance drivers:

The BMW 5 Series has long been the go-to choice for those who spend hours behind the wheel, driving up and down motorways for a living. So it should, perhaps, be no surprise that the introduction of the i5 has seen this trend continue. Go for the eDrive40 model and you get brisk performance, a comfortable, high-tech interior and a quiet driving experience.

You could go for the high-performance M60 model, which still has an impressive official range of up to 315 miles, but you’re unlikely to get anywhere near that if you enjoy the epic power from time to time. Instead, the more affordable eDrive40 version should get you comfortably over 300 miles between top ups in the real world, and with a maximum DC charge rate of 205kW, it only takes half an hour to charge from 10-80% capacity. Just enough time for a toilet break and a coffee on a road trip.

2. Skoda Superb

Ideal long-distance spec: 2.0-litre TDI 150hp, 57.7 mpg
Huge amounts of space, comfort and refinement
Frugal diesel and punchy petrol engines
Strong value for money

Skoda’s flagship model really lives up to its name – it’s superb. You get high levels of comfort and refinement, plus vast amounts of interior space – the rear seats of the Superb really do give cars like the Mercedes S-Class a run for their money.

A new model is set to go on sale in 2024, but if you can’t wait the outgoing model offers fantastic value. We’d opt for the 2.0-litre 150hp diesel engine for its 57mpg fuel efficiency, while going for SE L trim will get you adaptive cruise control, blind spot assistance and a driver fatigue sensor, all of which will help those long trips pass by in an instant. The Estate, meanwhile, has one of the biggest boots in the business.

3. Range Rover

Ideal long-distance spec: D300, 36.7 mpg
Lofty driving position gives great visibility

Latest model is dripping with helpful tech

It may require pretty deep pockets, but it would be impossible to not include the Range Rover in our list of long-distance cars, thanks to the armchair-like seats and the high driving position that is often imitated but never bettered.

The 3.0-litre diesel engine is available with 300 or 350hp and returns around 30-35mpg in the real world, while the plug-in hybrids can cover up to 70 miles on battery power alone, and officially return over 300mpg (though getting close to this will require regular plugging in, and economy will dive further on the motorway once you’ve depleted the battery). Noise-cancelling speakers contribute to a hushed driving experience, while a high-end Meridian sound system, adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assistance are among the features that help make long trips even more effortless.

4. Citroen C5 X

Ideal long-distance spec: PureTech 130, 46mpg
Very comfortable over bumps
Stylish and practical interior
Usefully big boot

Wherever you take the Citroen C5 X it’s incredibly comfortable, largely because of the comfort-focused suspension that means bumps in the road feel like driving over squishy marshmallow. But it’s out on the open road where the C5 X really comes into its own, because the quiet cabin serves up the refinement of much pricier models.

There are only two engines on offer, and it’s the petrol that will be better for long-distance drivers, with fuel economy of 46mpg in official tests. There is a plug-in hybrid with temptingly high economy stats, but the battery isn’t very big so you will run out of electric power very quickly on the motorway, making your MPG figure nosedive.

5. Honda Civic

Ideal long-distance spec: 2.0 i-MMD Hybrid, 60.1mpg
Impressive efficiency
Great to drive
Quiet at a cruise

It’s not just big, expensive cars that make for good long-distance driving companions. The Honda Civic is a prime example of this, because it’s great to drive whether you’re on a twisty road or cruising down the motorway, but it’s still pretty affordable to buy.

Your only engine option is a self-charging hybrid, which promises excellent fuel economy and seems to be capable of spending a lot of time running on electric power even on longer trips. That means you can set the standard-fit adaptive cruise control and relax in the quiet cabin without having to worry about burning through petrol once the battery’s dead.

6. Mercedes E-Class

Ideal long-distance spec: E 220 d, 59mpg
About as comfortable and refined as it gets
Packed full of technology
Spacious and practical

You might think the Mercedes S-Class is the ultimate long-distance Mercedes, and while you might not be wrong, it’s arguably better if you’re sitting in the rear seats. That’s why the E-Class is our pick if you need to churn through the miles yourself.

The new E-Class went on sale in 2023 and it’s closer than ever to being a baby S-Class. It’s cheaper (but far from cheap) while being just about as comfortable and packed full of all the technology you could ever need. You can even get it with a diesel engine still, though you would have to be a high-mileage driver for it to work out cheaper than petrol in the long run.

7. Tesla Model 3

Ideal long-distance spec: Model 3 Long Range, up to 390 miles of range

More comfortable than ever before

The Tesla Model 3 has been one of the best electric cars at any budget for a few years now, and despite the fact there have been dozens more alternatives cropping up for sale recently, it’s still one of the very best – especially since a fairly comprehensive update was introduced in late 2023. What’s most important for long distance drivers is that the Model 3 is now more comfortable and quieter than the old version, making it even more relaxing to drive. And you still get access to Tesla’s excellent Supercharger network.

If you want to make your motorway mileage more stress free, go for the Enhanced Autopilot upgrade. It’s fairly pricey, but gives you an advanced cruise control system that keeps pace with the car in front and can even change lanes for you. New features, such as automatic parking, are coming soon and will be automatically added over your home WiFi. Full-Self Driving is the highest assistance offering from Tesla, but it doesn’t quite offer what the name suggests, and it’s very expensive for something that doesn’t add much over the cheaper system in the UK right now.

8. Volvo XC90

Say cheese because the seven-seat Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit is loaded with cameras. Parents will appreciate the FAM CAM that gives the driver a birds-eye view of everyone in the vehicle. If there is nit-picking going on in the backseat, you’ll be able to see who started it. It’s also helpful to keep an eye on rear-facing younger children. However, teens might not be as fond of this feature.

The Night Vision Camera was fun to play with and a first for me. Infrared sensors detect animals or people up to 200 yards away, making it easier to avoid deer or other wildlife that wander onto roads. But after a few minutes, I found it distracting and turned it off to better focus on the road ahead.

The 360 back up camera shows all angles of the Jeep, which I found very helpful when pulling out of tight parking spots. It’s also useful when having to parallel park such a large vehicle.

Riding in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit is a pleasure. The spacious interior of my tester vehicle was gorgeous, with quilted leather on the doors and dash, a wide console for storage and the perfect height to rest an elbow. There’s no skimping on charging ports and legroom- even in the third row. My 24-year-old, music-loving daughter commented on the amazing sound system. A family of 5 could comfortably road-trip for 12+ hours in this vehicle.

Volvo XC90

When you think of Volvo, safety probably comes to mind because that’s a cornerstone of the brand’s messaging. Volvo takes family and safety very seriously, including standard features like adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert (which is so important when watching out for pedestrians, cars and cyclists behind you), and forward collision mitigation. Plus the structure of the vehicle itself is designed for maximum protection in case of a crash.

Even the base model includes wireless charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All three rows feel luxurious on a long or short trip.

Base Price: $56,545

Chrysler Pacifica

Minivans are designed for comfort and convenience, and Chrysler gets it right with the Pacifica, a perennial favorite. Available in gas-only, hybrid and all-wheel-drive versions, this van is as comfortable as a recliner on wheels for long drives.

The base price on the 2021 Pacifica includes such niceties as remote engine start; a power liftgate; and second-row seats that stow right into the floor or, when the seats are up, act as storage bins.

With the gas-powered version, you’ll get about 22 miles per gallon, and with the hybrid you can go up to 33 miles on the battery alone. At the top of the line, the Limited trim includes wireless headphones and a second-row theater with built-in screens and streaming capabilities.

Chevrolet Traverse

This three-row SUV from Chevy checks all the boxes: lots of legroom, smart tech like onboard Wi-Fi and a robust drivetrain.

The base price is very affordable, but I highly recommend the High Country trim at the top of the line. Yes, it’s more expensive at closer to $55,000, but it has all the bells and whistles plus some: sunroof, adaptive cruise control and a towing hitch with the ability to tow up to 5,000 pounds. It’s tempting to plan a long road trip and enjoy the ride.

Base Price: $30,995

Honda Odyssey

Honda also makes a stellar minivan that will last nearly forever; my sister owns two of them. The Odyssey is extremely comfortable and a great value. I particularly like the deep cargo wells behind the third row, perfect for stowing beach gear or even extra diapers and wipes for a long vacation.

Even in the base model, you’ll get important driver-assist features like adaptive cruise control, along with a standard rear-seat reminder alert that tells you if you left anything or anyone in the car when you park.

Opting for the Touring model adds about $10,000 to the total. But that includes a rear-seat entertainment system and Blu-Ray player as well. PLUS a cabin monitoring system so you can check and see if the little one is sleeping yet. And with 144.9 cubic feet of cargo space, you have plenty of room!

Nissan Pathfinder

For 2022, the Nissan Pathfinder is all new. It has a stunning array of amenities in a three-row, seven-or-eight passenger SUV. Wider and larger, with 80.4 cubic feet of storage available with the second and third-row seats folded, the new Pathfinder is worth waiting for. It’s powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine, creating 284 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque. That’s a lot of get-up-and-go.

The new Pathfinder has 16 cupholders, which is a whole lot of beverage holding and likely will mean a whole lot of potty stops on a road trip in this family vehicle! It even has a bin in the back that can act as a cooler with a drain plug, which is awesome for camping and tailgating.

Toyota Highlander

My family drove a Toyota Highlander from Austin, Texas, to Ft. Myers, Florida, over Christmas break. We loved the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa smartphone integration as well as the onboard Wi-Fi hotspot and standard Toyota Safety Sense drivers’ aids.

You can buy a Highlander in six different trims. In terms of fuel economy, an AWD Highlander will net 23 miles per gallon and the hybrid a fuel-sipping 36 miles per gallon combined.

Mazda CX-9

An unsung hero of the 3-row set is the 2021 Mazda CX-9, which looks and feels more like a wagon than an SUV in the best ways. The base model gives you a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, heated front seats and tri-zone climate control so all three rows can be comfortable. Adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation and blind-spot monitoring are also standard.

Go for the whole package with the Signature trim, which offers up cushy leather quilted seats, all-wheel drive and second-row captain’s chairs, making it even roomier and more luxurious.

If you could take an RV and distill it down to a large SUV, the Yukon would be it. The newest Yukon is spectacular inside, with a console in the front that moves several inches back. We know electric vehicles are the future of automotives. But what is less known is what are the best electric cars on the market? The largest anxiety that potential buyers of electric vehicles (EV) face is the amount of distance these cars can travel on a single charge. Though the average American drives fewer than 40 miles per day, the ability to take a longer road trip, to visit friends or family, or go on a vacation, is akin to a national right. A recent survey by Bloomberg suggests that we want around 300 miles of range to alleviate our anxieties , which is about one third more than the global average.

Just five years ago, many of the most popular EV options (outside of Tesla)—like the Nissan Leaf, Mini Electric, VW E-Golf—achieved only around 100 miles of range. Wildlife experts are warning people not to get close to black bears after a video earlier this week showed people in western North Carolina attempting to grab two bear cubs from a tree.

The incident took place outside an apartment complex in Buncombe County and was captured on video on Tuesday.

In the video , posted by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, several people attempt to pull two black bears from a low-hanging branch. One person manages to grab a cub and appears to pose with the wild animal for a photograph. After yelling out, the person drops the cub and the animal is seen running along a fence as the person chases after it.

Rachel Staudt, a resident of the apartment complex where the event took place, told the Asheville Citizen-Times that she decided to start recording the episode after asking the other residents to stop pulling at the cubs in the tree.

Ashley Hobbs, a biologist for the NCWRC and coordinator for BearWise , a nationwide education program to help people co-exist safely with black bears, told NPR that the cub seen running along the fence in the video was found wet and shivering in a retention pond near the apartment complex. The NCWRC news release said the other bear shown in the video has not been located.

The found cub was brought to an NCWRC rehabilitation facility and Hobbs told NPR the bear is now "doing excellent." She said it's eating and drinking well and that after NCWRC staff were able to do a full evaluation of the cub, they didn't find any lasting injuries from the encounter.

That being said, Hobbs warns that the incident isn't without consequences. "We want wild bears to stay wild," she said.

Raising wildlife in captivity can cause stress to animals and sometimes rehabilitation facilities are unable to mimic the conditions and care animals are accustomed to in their natural environments, said Hobbs. For their safety and preservation, Hobbs says raising cubs in captivity is avoided whenever possible.

Black bear cubs usually stay with their mothers for about 18 months, according to the National Park Service . The cubs seen in Newcombe County were only a couple of months old, said Hobbs.

"They are still reliant on their mother for milk" at that age, she added.

Because the cub was removed from the tree and couldn't be reunited with its mother, it will need to be raised at the NCWRC rehabilitation facility before it can be released into the mountains of western North Carolina when it's fully weaned in the fall, Hobbs said.

What to do if you encounter a black bear cub

It's common for female black bears to leave their young in safe areas while they look for food. "She'll forage for a few hours and she'll come back and pick them up," Hobbs said.

She also said it's normal to see more black bears in the springtime when they're more active than in the winter when they hibernate in North Carolina.

For that reason, Hobbs warns that if you see a cub alone in a brush pile or even on your back porch, it doesn't mean it's actually in danger or in need of help. "Most of the time, that's not the case. So if you see a cub alone, it's not necessarily a bad thing. And that's why it's good to give them lots of space."

If you see a cub, Hobbs recognizes it can be tempting to approach them because they are some of the "cutest little animals you'll ever find." But she warns, "you should never approach or try to handle a black bear cub."

It's dangerous for the cub because you could accidentally injure it while handling it or put it at risk of being orphaned or separated from its mother.

Hobbs said interacting with cubs can also put people at risk. According to BearWise , black bears rarely become aggressive. But, Hobbs said, they will harm a person if they feel the need to defend their food or offspring.

If you encounter a black bear cub, give them lots of space, "back up and go in the opposite direction."

If you feel tempted to take a photograph, only to do so from a distance. "We have zoom on our cameras nowadays. Definitely use the zoom if you want to take a picture," Hobbs said.

Commission spokesperson Anna Gurney told The Associated Press in an email on Friday that no charges would be filed against the people who disturbed the cubs.
