The app can only be used on major U.S. exit-based highways.

No offline access, so you'll use your data plan while you're on the road.

Whether you're looking for well-known franchises like Starbucks and Walmart to convenient amenities like free Wi-Fi and truck or trailer parking, this app has you covered.

The Best Road Trip Apps That Help You Find Cheap Gas, Avoid Traffic, and More

Download these before you hit the highway.

Technology has revolutionized the way we travel in countless ways. Paper maps and GPS navigation systems have been replaced by Google and Apple Maps, old-school CDs by music streaming services, and guidebooks by apps that can notify road-trippers of roadside attractions in real time. One thing is certain: the smartphone has made road trips infinitely easier and, arguably, cheaper.

Whether you need a digital road trip planner to map out your next journey or something to help you avoid traffic jams, here are 11 of the best road trip apps to download ahead of your next adventure.

Roadtrippers

Roadtrippers is one of the most practical and popular road trip planning apps out there. Maybe you want to see national parks or the quirkiest roadside attractions. Perhaps you want to stop for the night at an iconic or underrated hotel. You can plan your stops right in the app, adding up to three waypoints for free or 150 with a Roadtrippers Premium account. There are also Basic and Pro memberships that allot you 20 and 50 waypoints per trip, respectively. The higher-tier memberships allow you to collaborate with friends and family and use navigation. The app features lodging, sights, outdoorsy destinations, restaurants, activities, shopping, fuel, and more all around the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

The app is free, but you have to upgrade to a membership plan to enjoy all the bells and whistles. The Basic plan costs $40 a year, the Pro plan $50 a year, and the Premium $60 a year. It's available on iOS and Android .

Google Maps

Every road-tripper needs a trusty navigation app in their arsenal, and Google Maps is consistently one of the most — if not the most — downloaded in the U.S. every year. Its dominance can be attributed to how comprehensive its data is, which allows it to generate the very best directions based on distance, road conditions, and traffic patterns.

Google Maps gives you route options and provides accurate estimates of how long it takes to get from A to B. Plus, you can plot several waypoints along your route — be it a mid-morning coffee stop or a hotel for overnighting (you can see reviews right in the app).

Google Maps is free and available on iOS and Android .

Waze is another one of the top navigation apps. With real-time updates that help you avoid traffic jams, construction, and more, it will have you navigating new cities and unfamiliar streets like a seasoned local. It's perhaps a little more proactive than Google Maps in changing up a route when problems arise, and that means Waze users should prepare for their drive to be a little unpredictable.

No one wants to spend hours sitting in traffic instead of exploring, so the fact that Waze collects data from other drivers to streamline the driving experience is a huge help. The app is free and available on iOS and Android .

Paying for fuel can eat up a good chunk of your road trip budget, but GasBuddy can save you a few bucks. The app crowdsources up-to-date fuel prices for more than 150,000 gas stations around the U.S. and Canada. The app also tells you how recent the submission is so you know whether it's outdated.

GasBuddy is not just helpful for finding cheap gas but also for finding gas stations in general (and parking), which can be difficult in foreign territory. The app is free and can be downloaded on iOS and Android . While using it, be a good road-tripper and submit gas prices you see as you travel.

Roadside America

Barry Winiker/Getty Images

The offbeat and kitschy roadside attractions you can find throughout the U.S. are often some of the most delightful parts of a road trip. The Roadside America app helps you find the most unique attractions worth stopping for, like the large sculpture of a cartoon mouse holding a cheese platter in Plain, Wisconsin — where else? — or the decidedly odd larger-than-life-sized three-way electrical plug that rests on a lawn in Philadelphia. The app features museums, murals, tours, quirky restaurants, and photo ops.

Roadside America costs $3 to download, which gets you access to one region in the app. You can purchase more regions for $2 or get access to all of the U.S. and Canada for an extra $7. The app is available only on iOS .

iExit Interstate Exit Guide

Knowing where to stop for road trip snacks, a drive-through latte, or a public restroom can be challenging with all the exit signs whizzing by at 70 mph, but iExit Interstate Exit Guide takes the guesswork out of it. The app will list which exits are coming up on your route, what's there, and what they offer — including food, lodging, fuel, and even hospitals. It pulls fuel prices from OPIS (the Oil Price Information Service) and displays Yelp reviews for businesses.

The app is free to download. Find it on both iOS and Android .

HotelTonight

Even if you've planned out all your stops ahead of time, you might find that you need to pull over for a night unexpectedly. Driving is tiring, and unplanned naps can be life-saving. HotelTonight can help you find accommodations in a pinch. The app offers day-of deals on unsold rooms, and the user-friendly interface means you can book a discounted room in minutes. There are well over 1,000 properties to choose from in cities all over the world, from Mexico City to Jakarta (in case you happen to take your road-tripping global).

It's free to download and available on iOS and Android .

If staying in a tucked-away A-frame cabin, a yurt, or a private guest house in someone's garden is more your travel style than bouncing between hotels, then Airbnb is the ticket. On the Airbnb app, you can search properties (millions in the U.S. alone) on a map and read reviews before you book, which you can do in advance or at the last minute.

The app features not just vacation homes but also activities, so if you're keen to experience a city like a local you can do so via a pottery class or a guided walking tour, for example.

The Airbnb app is free. You can download it on iOS or Android .

Travelers who dream of camping out under the stars should download The Dyrt , a free app that helps you find tent, RV, and cabin sites across the U.S. One of the top camping apps on iOS and Android , it has more than a million registered users who submit reviews, pictures, and tips. On The Dyrt, you get real intel on campsites and a built-in community that makes camping on a road trip especially fun and safe. You can even book some of the campsites right on app.

The app is free, but there's a premium version for $36 a year that allows you to plan trips and search campsites while offline — convenient for remote regions.

What is a road trip without a perfect playlist? Whether you're keen to create a soundtrack of nostalgic singalongs, modern pop songs, or music inspired by your destination, you'll find even the most obscure tunes on Spotify , a catalog of more than 100 million tracks. When you tire of Taylor Swift, you can turn to podcasts or an audiobook to keep you company. Road trips are a great opportunity to delve into a docuseries like "Serial," an all-time favorite.

Spotify is free to download and listen to, but the ad breaks are annoying and streaming can chew through your phone data. A better option is to purchase a premium membership for $11 a month. It's ad-free and you can download music to listen to offline. The Spotify app is available on iOS and Android .

Electric vehicles are increasingly commonplace and great for more environmentally friendly road-tripping. The problem is often finding charging stations, as most EVs can go 100 to 300 miles before they need to be plugged in. PlugShare lists 700,000 charging stations across North America, Europe, and beyond. Users share their reviews of the stations, helping to guide EV drivers to the best, fastest, and most reliable charging spots.

PlugShare is free and available to download on iOS and Android .

Best road trip planner apps: 5 apps to map out your adventure

How to plan your roadtrip with apps in the driver's seat

best road trip tracking app

Regardless of your destination, planning your trip is an integral part of the adventure. Otherwise, you’ll spend way more than you need to and, chances are, you won’t get to see everything on your wishlist.

We live in a golden age of technology that we often take for granted. But, in all the time we spend playing our ‘Spin Addicts’ and our ‘Cat Quests’, very rarely do we think about the utility that our smart devices can provide on the open road.

As such, we’ve gone out of our way to do the thinking for you.

That’s right, to help you out with your next big outing we’ve assimilated five of the best road trip planner apps for your lengthy expedition below. Above all else, we imagine you’ll be enticed by the fact that they’re all free to download, even if you may or may not be tempted later on to shell out some cash for a monthly subscription fee. (You’ll know what we mean when you see it.)

Best road trip planner

1. Roadtrippers

As its name and slogan suggests, this is the only map built for travelers. Okay, maybe that’s a bit of hyperbole, but this app will help you find virtually everything you could ever need along the way.

Open Roadtrippers and you’ll find millions of locations, including local diners and roadside attractions that, admittedly, Google Maps is prone to miss. Then, once you’ve outlined your road trip plan, you can share it with your travel buddies so that they can make suggestions.

Download it now on iOS | Download it now on Android

Best road trip planner

2. Waze

Like Roadtrippers, Waze hones in on social interaction, but it does so by letting the community decide which routes are the best to take. Users can report nearby collisions, police radar and traffic jams so that you can safely avoid those routes in favor of arriving on time. What’s more, you’ll find the cheapest gas prices around, as gathered by the community. Regardless of whether you set out to save time or money, Waze is the best way to do both.

Best road trip planner

3. GasBuddy

Unlike our previous mentions which can potentially save time or money, GasBuddy promises a specific amount of money you’ll save by using it.

Similar to Waze, GasBuddy is a community-driven platform that helps you locate the most affordable gas prices around so that you never have to pay full price for fossil fuels again. The difference is that, with this app, you can subscribe to GasBuddy Pay for additional savings of 15 cents per gallon on your first fill-up and 5 cents per gallon on every fill-up after that.

Download it now on iOS | Download it now on Android

Best road trip planner

4. Hotel Tonight

We’ve all been in that position. The one where we get too tired to continue driving and we need to find a hotel quickly and cheaply, else suffer the wrath of sleepy driving with the windows rolled down and the music turned all the way up. (Pro tip: don't do that, ever. It's super dangerous.)

But if that sounds like a horror story that you’ve experienced before, Hotel Tonight is the app for you. Specializing in last-minute hotel deals, Hotel Tonight makes it possible to book a room in three easy taps and one seamless swipe.

best road trip tracking app

5. Spotify

Close your eyes. Now imagine you can listen to any song you want, including but not limited to “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers. Now open them.

Though it seems jokingly obvious now, Spotify would have been a dream come true in the days when top 40 radio hits triumphed over all else. Finally, you don’t have to listen to the same handful of songs on repeat.

Instead, you can hand-pick your own playlists, choosing between over 30 million songs in the Spotify catalog. Of course, if Spotify isn't your music scene, both Apple Music and Google's own Play Music streaming service are also good travel companions.

The BEST Road Trip Planner Apps and Tools to plan your road trip

Google maps.

I’ve said it before ( Here in fact ), Google Maps is amazing for planning a road trip . And it’s free. (Actually, many of these road trip planner apps and tools are free- we’re thoughtful like that!)

We use Google maps to put together a visual guide to places we want to visit- and then we use it to plan a route. You can see how we do it here

Another option is using Guru maps for offline navigation

Pinterest is an AMAZING road trip planne r resource! There are destination guides, things to do, road trip kit reviews and everything else you need! I never used to use it for anything other than recipes- what a mistake! Now, it’s the first place I go to look for new ideas when we’re heading off.

You’ll be pleased to know Wandering Bird is on Pinterest too, sharing destination guides, travel tips and yep- road trip planner tools!- You can follow us on Pinterest here

Roadtrippers

This is another site I think we underuse in Europe, but it’s a great road trip planner. Use it in the same way as Google maps, but there are also many other cool features; it estimates how much money you’ll spend on fuel and how far you have to drive, among other things.

Instagram is a road trip planner’s paradise! So many amazing destinations, secret locations and beautiful places are shared every single day. Just search the hashtag #roadtrip or your planned destination and see what comes up!

BEST road trip planner travel apps to help planning your road trip so much easier. Road trip travel apps to save you money, plan the best route, organise your complete trip and make sure you don't forget anything!

Facebook might not be your first thought for road trip planning apps, but if you ask a question on a relevant facebook group, you’ll get LOADS of ideas and info to help you plan your trip. I love asking advice from real people who’ve been there- and I find people are more likely to respond on Facebook, rather than Instagram.

You can find us on Facebook too- sharing tips, destination advice or general silliness- check out our page HERE

Road Trip Travel Blogs

Not an app, but travel blogs are a fantastic road trip planning tool. To find one for the area you’re planning to road trip to, just search ‘Road Trip Blog ________’ You’ll find people have road tripped all over the place and you can use their suggestions and favourite places in your road trip planner.

I hope if you’re heading to Europe you’ll find a certain road trip blog especially useful *cough cough * Feel free to sign up to our resource library so you can get useful road trip checklists, travel planning tips and destination guides.

Road trip forums are a great source of information- if you use them correctly and accept that there are many people in there who talk a lot, but haven’t necessarily DONE a lot.

That said, there can be some really good road trip planner advice and info- again, type into Google ‘Road Trip Forum for _____’ or even travel forums if you’re looking for destination advice for a particular location. The only downside to forums is you often have to sign up/ register before you can get access.

Other awesome Road Trip planner tools we recommend

Ok, so you’ve planned your road trip destination and started plotting places into your chosen road trip planner- but now WHAT??

If you don’t have a vehicle for your road trip, check out:

I LOVE this site. What a brilliantly awesome idea to help you plan and cut your costs for a road trip. Basically, people just like you and me list their RVs, campers and even trucks- and other people rent them out! Seriously, there are a HUGE number of vehicles on there, all over the world, available for rent at really reasonable prices.

If you’re looking for low-cost vehicle rental, this is a great place to start! Just please be aware that, as with many sites like this, there is the potential for unscrupulous people to take advantage. If in doubt, pick another van or hire through an approved rental agency.

So, now you’ve got a road trip destination, an overflowing road trip planner and a vehicle! Last planning tip- get some:

Packing Checklists

A packing checklist can be invaluable- especially if you’re roadtripping and moving around regularly. It is SO easy to forget something silly as you travel – so get yourself a packing checklist to make it easier.

You can either use a FREE app like My Trip List, which allows you to customise a packing list.

Useful Road trip planner apps whilst ON your road trip

The fun doesn’t stop just coz you’ve started travelling! Oh no, if you’re anything like us, you’ll keep planning your road trip as you’re on the road! After all, what’s the point in having an adventure if you can’t be adventurous?!?

Navigating is hard enough on a road trip- without getting your camper stuck down a narrow street! This app works on any iPad or phone with GPS and allows you to input the dimensions of your vehicle so you can avoid streets and bridges which are too small. Read our full review of CoPilot here.

>>Looking for other sat-navs. These are the best on the market<<

Google translate app to convert languages.

Road tripping to another country? Get the Google Translate app. This is one of our favourite road trip planner apps- because it’s so darn useful. Just open the app and hold it up to a sign, menu, paper, whatever- and Google Translate will translate the words into your chosen language! This is BRILLIANT for roadtripping Europe where the languages change constantly and we don’t always speak them very well.

Recipe Book

I LOVE this app. I use it all the time and it’s so freaking easy- and FREE!! Find a great recipe on Pinterest or Google, make it, and then save the recipe to your recipe book app, so it’s there for the next time you want to cook it. The app syncs between ipad and phone, which is great- I can grab whichever is closest to hand. I prefer following a recipe from a larger screen, but having the app on the phone is SO useful when I’m shopping and can’t decide what I want to cook for dinner.

DroneAssist

The BEST app in the UK for telling you where you can safely and legally fly your drone. It’s a brilliant and easy-to-use app and we use it whenever we want to get our drone out… or at least we did, until we lost our drone in Lake Annecy *sob* Hopefully by the time you read this we’ll have another one ready to go! We haven’t found a similar app for use in Europe or North America- if you know of one, please let me know and I’ll update this list.

Find fuel with these great road trip planning apps:

If you have refillable LPG gas installed on your motorhome (one of our Road Trip essentials!), this app is brilliant for finding places where you can fill up. Most of the locations are current and the app/ website are updated frequently.

This is one for my American friends- find the cheapest gas along your route. (To avoid confusion, by gas I mean petrol. Or diesel. Not gas for cooking.) I asked my group of road tripping RVers which app they recommend and this one was top of the list!!

Road Trip planner apps to help you find somewhere to stay

If you haven’t booked a campsite or a hotel, you’ll need to find places to stop as you road trip. Here are some of the best apps to help with finding somewhere to stay as you road trip:

If you’re exploring Europe, this is THE app to have to help you find free or cheap parking spots. You can even use this in advance as a road trip planner- find suitable looking spots and add them to your itinerary or Google maps before you go. I’m pleased to see Park4night is now coming to the US and Canada too- more and more overnight spots are popping up.

Campercontact

Campercontact is another overnight stop app, but what I love about this one is that you can set your vehicle height and length in order to find appropriate spots. We use this app a LOT when we have a trailer, as many aires or free spaces are too small for us.

>> Read our complete review on apps for navigation here<<

Allstays has a range of campgrounds, rest stops and free camping spots across the US. I believe most of the free places are only available if you buy the Pro version, but there seems to be a LOT of options on there, which would be a great way to help plan your road trip. iOverlander is another option to find places to stay.

Road Trip planner apps to make the miles go faster!

I have become a huge podcast fan over the last few months. They are perfect for driving- and there’s a HUGE range to choose from. Even better- they’re free! I like educational podcasts- learning things helps keeps me awake as I drive, but there are all sorts of different road trip podcasts to choose from and make the miles fly by. Jump onto your podcast app and see what appeals!

Another awesome app. Find and download audio books, listen to them, then return them! I’m slowly working my way through the Harry Potter books- Stephen Fry’s voice is just magical and it’s one the whole family enjoys listening to. Sign up to Audible here and get a FREE TRIAL!

BEST road trip planner travel apps to help planning your road trip so much easier. Road trip travel apps to save you money, plan the best route, organise your complete trip and make sure you don't forget anything!

Spotify/ iTunes

Whether you are a die-hard spotify user or an iTunes convert, I think most people agree that all good road trips need an awesome playlist! This section should probably be in road trip planning- creating the perfect playlist takes time, you know!

Want some ideas to get you started? Here are 150 of the BEST Road Trip songs!

Kindle Unlimited

There are very very few books I can read more than once. Even if it was a good one- once I know the end, it’s dead to me. (Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter are notable exceptions to this rule!)  What I LOVE about Kindle Unlimited is you can read a book and then return it- and there are some BRILLIANT, well-known books and authors on there. It’s a proper library, ready for you to explore, for only a few pounds (or dollars!) a month. See what you could be reading on your road trip HERE (there’s even a 30-day free trial!)

Notes for Budgeting

Yep, notes. This is what I use for all our budgeting and diary for our road trips. Heck, sometimes I use it as a road trip planner before we even leave!

No, it’s not sexy and yes, there are apps out there which do budgeting and diary entries and everything else- but I find it so easy to grab my phone every time we stop for fuel/ shopping/ an attraction and make a quick note on what we spent and what we thought!

I’ve used notes for years to keep track of our spending as we travel- then I can write it up into a spreadsheet when we return or when we’re stopped in one place for a few days. Whatever you choose, definitely get a way to keep track of your spending!

PSSNGR for Splitwise

You’ve heard of Splitwise, right? It’s a brilliant app which allows friends to split the bill on things like meals out, rent, bills, etc. PSSNGR is an extension of that- but it’s designed for car shares. It can calculate and split the cost of a road trip, with fuel costs, snacks, meals etc- perfect for when you’re road tripping with friends!

Accuweather

Does anyone else have 3 different weather apps on their phone… and they look at all of them until they get a forecast they like? I definitely do that, but then I tend to believe what Accuweather says! The app is a great road trip planner tool as it can help you prepare for the weather ahead- essential for road trip safety.

Star Gazing App

One of my favourite things about road trips is getting far enough away from the world so we can enjoy the night sky in all its glory. I have only seen the Milky Way ONCE- and I plan to see it again as often as possible because it was breathtaking.

There are several star apps available, which will show you which stars and planets you are looking at as you gaze in wonder at the sky. There’s also one called Photopills, which will help you line up the perfect shot of the Milky Way (it also works for sunrise/ sunsets.)

Can’t go on your own road trip?

Check out ‘Roads by Porsche’- a road trip app filled with videos of other people driving some of the most beautiful roads on this planet! It’s a perfect road trip planner app- but it’s also a lovely way to while away a rainy afternoon, dreaming about your next adventure!

I hope you find these travel apps useful. Is there one you LOVE which I’ve missed? Let me know! If you enjoyed this and think others would find it useful, please share on Facebook or Pinterest.

Safe travels!

Best Road Trip Apps for Android in 2022

Android Auto Car Mount

There are few things better than hitting the open road on a cross-country road trip. Whether you're heading out with your best buds or loading the kids into the car to visit relatives a few states over a little app prep will make sure the trip goes as smooth as is possible.

If your car doesn't have Android Auto functionality built into its stereo system, it's worth checking out Google's app for staying connected in your car. It's now available on any Android phone , so you don't need to buy a brand new car or upgrade your car stereo to take advantage of the convenience — it'll just run right on your phone and can be configured to automatically launch when connected to your car's Bluetooth or a Bluetooth FM transmitter .

Android Auto is the safest way to access your phone while driving, giving you one-touch access to navigation, music controls, and recent calls. As you'd expect, there's great support built in for Google Assistant including the option to have incoming text messages read out loud (admittedly not the best option if you're in a packed car with friends or family).

Android Auto lets you navigate with Google Maps, listen to playlists or podcasts from your favorite apps, send messages via voice, and more while eliminating the other ways your phone can distract you on the road. If you're hitting the road this summer, you should absolutely have this app download on your phone.

While Google Maps remains the most popular navigation app for Android (largely due to its inclusion as a stock app on most Android devices), Waze is a great option to consider for all your GPS navigation needs.

Waze users get the benefit of all the information gleaned from other Waze users on the road, from real-time traffic information including accident reports, police traps and other hazards seen on the road. You're also encouraged to add your own updates and contribute to your local Waze community as well. Using all that data, Waze will automatically reroute you to avoid any upcoming hazards, and also has really smart features for finding the cheapest gas stations along the way as well as ways of keeping family and friends in the loop on your ETA.

Google Trips is a great travel planning app that helps with some of the mundane aspects of traveling like keeping track of your reservations, while also helping to plan out your days in a new city by suggesting cool things to do based on your interests and available time.

If you're planning to make a pitstop on your way to your final destination, plug the city into the app and see what it generates! It's also available offline, so if you planned out your pit stops ahead of time you can keep in the know even if your phone's data konks out.

When you're exploring a new city trying to figure out what's worth checking out, you're best off checking in with the locals. Yelp is one of the most popular apps for reviewing restaurants and businesses with over 100 million reviews posted by users just like you.

When you're in a pinch for a roadside bite and need to know what's good, Yelp will help you find the perfect restaurant to fuel up and get back on the road.

Fuelling up is often one of the biggest expenses you'll incur on a road trip. GasBuddy helps you find the cheapest places to fill up along the way. Not only is this an app that you'll want to use on a road trip, but you might end up becoming an everyday user once you see the savings for yourself.

All the data is user-generated, so if you see a cheaper gas price not listed in the app, you can report the price in the app and contribute to the GasBuddy community.

What's a road trip without some kick-ass driving music? Or maybe a podcast is more your speed? Regardless of what you prefer to listen to on your long distance drives, Spotify is the best streaming service you should be using in 2018.

Spotify has improved its free, ad-supported mobile app with "made for you" playlists that are curated based on the songs and bands you listen to. With a premium subscription, you get full, unfiltered access to streaming access to over 40 million tracks along with a wide range of curated playlists, so the music won't ever stop, even on the longest of drives. Spotify also includes podcasts, and with Spotify Premium you can download songs and podcasts to your device for offline listening during those times on your trip where cell reception might be lacking. It also plays real nice with Android Auto allowing for hands-free control of all your music while you're on the road.

That is, unless your co-pilot has already claimed the role of in-car DJ…

With its latest update allowing for offline viewing on mobile devices, Netflix suddenly became the go-to app for parents hoping to distract the young ones in the back without having to worry about all that data.

There's a large amount of kid-friendly content available to be downloaded for offline viewing, which should help keep the shouts of "are we there yet?" to a minimum. Load up a phone or tablet with your kids' favorites and look forward to the quietest road trip you've ever enjoyed. It's also a great option for keeping adults quiet, too. A subscription is required, of course, but if you don't already have one you for sure know someone who does.

Have a blast and save on gas with our favorite road trip apps.

Rachel Cavanaugh

The weather’s getting warmer, you’ve stocked up on PTO, and your playlist of summer songs  is about at capacity which means one thing: It’s road trip season. In other words, it’s time to load up the car, grab your friends, and hit the open road.

Roadtrippers

Google trips, iheartradio, blink roadside assistance.

Whether you’re planning to camp in the woods or stay in swanky hotels, there are unique aspects to road tripping that require special planning. Unlike vacations, where you’re flying to a single destination, road trips involve preparation such as determining the best route, mapping out your stopover points, finding nearby attractions, and ensuring you’re close enough to gas and roadside services.

Fortunately, there are plenty of mobile apps to help you during the planning phase and once you’re on the road. Here are the best road trip planners, for both iOS and Android-compatible smartphones.

  • The best golf apps for iPhone and Android: 8 best ones in 2023
  • The best action cameras
  • The best cars for camping

Roadtrippers is perhaps the best all-around road trip app, working as a comprehensive planning assistant that offers everything from creating your route to selecting activities and finding lodging. You can book accommodations instantly via the app, which looks similar to a more full0-featured version of Google Maps . Better yet, it’s completely free for anyone to make use of.

To plan a trip, simply enter your final destination and then click on nearby cities and destinations. From here, the app lets you play around with different routes and activity options until you find your favorite. We recommend using the desktop version for the planning portion, as it’s easier to zoom in and out on a bigger map.

Once the route is locked in, you can then search for various types of accommodations including hotels, campsites, vacation rentals, RV spots, and other places to sleep for the night. Additionally, you can scroll for activities to do including Attractions and Culture, Points of Interest, Entertainment and Nightlife, Scenic Drives, and dozens of other sub-categories. Once you’re on the road, switch to the mobile version to search for food, find nearby gas, locate rest areas, find auto shops, or track down other amenities.

GasBuddy is by far the easiest and most straightforward gas-finding app available. By simply entering your current location, the app shows you up-to-date gas prices within a pre-set local radius. You can sort the resulting stations by price, distance, or price and distance together. There’s also an option to filter stations by whether or not they have certain amenities such as car washes, air pumps, propane fills, restrooms, pay-at-pump features, and 24/7 service hours.

Whether you plan to fill up with regular, mid-grade, premium, diesel, or even ethanol/E85 fuels, GasBuddy clearly lays out which station offers what grade of fuel and at what price. There’s even a map view you can use to zoom out and jump around, viewing gas stations in various parts of the state or country.

Serious savers can join GasBuddy as a member by simply linking their checking account. Once linked, the company then sends a card in the mail which can be used to receive 10 cents off per gallon for the first fill and five cents off per gallon at all future stops. If you’re going to be giving your odometer a workout this summer, GasBuddy is an excellent way to cut down on fuel costs.

Google Trips is a general vacation planner app, however, if you’re going to be hopping from one town to the next, it has plenty of useful features to make the most of each destination.

For instance, searching in the mobile-only app for “things to do” populates a list broken down into tabs such as live music, art galleries, outdoor pursuits, kids activities, and many more. The categories are all location-specific so if you’re in Portland, Oregon, for example, you’ll see options like vintage shopping, indie movies, or made in Portland, whereas if you’re in New York you’ll see tabs like Brooklyn standouts, literary NYC, or Madison Avenue chic.

The app has a similar feature for food and drink choices as well, which includes a summary of what genres of food the city or town is known for and where you can find each type of cuisine. You can save attractions you want to visit in the handy Saved Places tab and there’s a feature called Day Plans that offers suggested itineraries in one, two, and three-day formats.

If you have any reservations, you can forward the emails to your Gmail account and the app automatically syncs them into a reservations tab which allows easy access to confirmation numbers and other info. There’s also a comprehensive Getting Around section that explains what types of public transportation and ride-shares are available, should you choose to park the car for the day, as well as walking and biking paths.

When you get tired of looping through the same playlists on Spotify or Pandora , iHeartRadio offers an awesome way to integrate musical playlists with podcasts, news, and local radio stations. The app is connected to over 1,000 different stations throughout the United States which you can live stream anywhere. If you want to search by region, just enter a zip code otherwise you can surf by genre, selecting from music stations (pop, hip-hop, country, jazz, etc), comedy shows, sports stations, political talk radio, and others.

Under the podcasts tab , you can browse for new shows or save a list of your favorites. There’s an extensive selection of choices including popular series like This American Life, Fresh Air, Serial, Pod Save America, Radiolab, and others. The Playlists tab allows you to create your own playlists or surf for music based on mood, activity, decade, genre, and other categories similar to Spotify. You can also save songs and follow artists in your Library.

The basic app is free but in order to use all its features, you must choose a subscription of either $5 for iHeartRadio Plus or $10 for iHeartRadio All Access.

Blink is a wonderfully convenient app that allows you to access immediate roadside service without requiring a membership. If you run into car troubles, simply enter your location like you would with something like Uber or Lyft, and the app immediately sends someone to help you.

The tabs are broken down into Battery, Flat Tire, Tow, Lockout, and Other, where you can ask for things like fuel delivery if you run out of gas. It’s a 24/7 service with nationwide coverage offered in 99.4 percent of all US zip codes. That means you’re covered just about anywhere you go, at any time, be it day or night.

When you first request service, it doesn’t completely commit you to have to receive what you ordered. The app first shows you your options with a price quoted along with an estimated wait time. From there, you can decide if you want to proceed. If you prefer to talk to a human, there’s a telephone icon in the upper righthand corner of the app that connects you to a representative who can answer questions and book services.

Using a bike computer is a great way to set goals and track cycling progress. However, if you've done any shopping around, you're aware of how expensive it can be. Mobile apps have even gotten so effective in recent years that we wouldn't blame you for wondering if you need a bike computer at all. Depending on your goals, it may make more sense to forgo the handlebar-mounted devices altogether and use your phone to record metrics.

Many cycling-focused apps measure data like speed, distance, and pace, and help with tasks such as route planning, goal setting, community building, coaching, or other bike-related objectives. Because there are so many available, the one you choose depends on what you want to use it for -- you may even want to use a few separate apps to accomplish different purposes. To help make the decision process easier, here are the best cycling apps for each type of function. The best metrics tracker: Strava

We've looked at numerous options for speakers designed for outdoor use, and the Ultimate Ears Megaboom 3 is our choice as the best all-around. With a winning trifecta of incredible sound, a diehard battery, and a rugged design that is ideal for crowd-pleasing, it's the clear standout in a sea of speakers.

There are plenty of other good choices on our list, which we chose after hundreds of hours evaluating key criteria like sound quality, portability, water and dust resistance, ruggedness, battery life, ease of use, and, of course, value. We also considered scenarios like permanent wired installations and times when a portable speaker would be preferable. Follow below to find the best outdoor speakers for any situation. Mountain biking has boomed in recent years and as a result, manufacturers have developed an increased number of specialized designs to appeal to this broad and nuanced market. There are now many models to choose from, but the Santa Cruz Hightower C R remains the best mountain bike on the market, namely due to its versatility, price, and blue-ribbon precision on the track. 7 Useful Apps Every Traveler Should Know About

Technology continues to make travel easier for millions of people around the globe. New apps offer travelers fresh ways to research a destination, connect with fellow globetrotters, communicate with locals, and track their flights. As a full-time digital nomad , I’ve learned the importance of having the right tools at your disposal when on the road.

Over the past few years, I’ve visited dozens of countries, flown hundreds of thousands of miles, and tested countless apps to find the ones that prove to be the most helpful. And while tools like Meetup, Google Maps, Google Translate, currency converters, and vacation rental , airline, and hotel–specific apps are in fact indispensable on most trips, I find that many of the best travel apps are still undiscovered by my fellow travelers.

Below, seven travel apps that make life on the go markedly easier (and more fun), from real-time flight trackers to photo-sharing gems—all of these apps are free, but some have paid pro versions worth considering. Don’t think these apps are only for full-time travelers—they prove useful for every type of traveler, whether you're in a brand-new destination or back for a return visit.

Discover the best apps for travelers:

Apps for flying, apps for exploring, apps for photo sharing.

Image may contain: Aircraft, Airliner, Airplane, Transportation, Vehicle, and Flight

My favorite app on this list is Flighty, a must-have for any frequent flier . The free version is fantastic, but I recommend splurging for the premium version, which gives you even more useful information and comes at a reasonable cost of $48 per year. The functionality it provides more than justifies the price.

The free version allows you to input all future flights plus past journeys you've taken within the last year. It provides updated information if any schedule changes occur to upcoming flights and allows you to track all the miles you’ve flown in one place.

The other main benefit is that it allows you to share your flight information with friends and family members who are also on Flighty. They will receive real-time updates about your flight without you having to text them. My parents love to make sure I’m safe so they appreciate getting detailed information about my travels—even while I’m in the air.

Image may contain: Gun, Weapon, Shooting, and Spiral

Flightradar24 is a favorite app among fellow aviation geeks. It lets you track almost any aircraft you see in the air throughout the day or night. You can track your own flight, a friend's flight, or any plane you see in real-time. It shares plenty of cool data, like the altitude, speed, arrival and departure airports and times, and tail number.

Image may contain: Logo, and First Aid

There are tons of eSIM apps on the market, but Airalo is probably my favorite, with digital SIM cards available for dozens of countries. I find it to be the most reliable and offers the best data packages. It can be a little pricey, but it is the best option if you’re only taking short trips. Holafly is another eSIM app that offers unlimited data and works well, but I find the app to be much more glitchy than Airalo and would recommend using the desktop version.

Image may contain: Symbol, First Aid, Text, and Logo

This one is for the planner of the group. Wanderlog merges the best of a bunch of different apps into one. Imagine an app that lets you plan a trip with ease: collaborate with friends as if you’re on Google Docs, manage expense tracking like Splitwise, and have a central place for your reservations, checklists, and more. Tripit is a similar travel planner app, so you can download both and get a feel for which interface you like better.

Image may contain: Paper, and Ice

Been allows you to track the countries you’ve visited and make a wish list of places you can’t wait to cross off your travel bucket list . It gives you information like the percentage of the globe you’ve been to and shows you a world map of your trips. It’s always fun to add in a new country whenever I reach my destination.

Image may contain: Sign, Symbol, Road Sign, and Weapon

This app was introduced to me by fellow nomads I met at a cafe in Montevideo, Uruguay . It automatically tracks your route across the world, allowing you to quickly upload pictures throughout your travels that can be viewed by anyone who has access to your profile. It’s an excellent way to share important moments with loved ones without needing to send photos to each person individually. Users can also create easily accessible guides filled with up-to-date information to help you plan your own trip.

Image may contain: Logo, and Disk

Steller is another app that a friend recently introduced me to, and I’ve quickly fallen in love with it. It uses a combination of AI and user experiences to help you plan trips around the globe. From recommendations of things to see, like the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires or the Royal Palace of Naples, to full guidebooks created by users, you can get inspired, book experiences, and discover hidden gems within this app.

The best trip planner apps to make your travels easier

gabriela-headshot

Booking a trip can be an exciting yet daunting task. As if booking airfare, hotel, and transportation weren't enough, you also need to consider food, sights, and attractions. As a travel lover myself, I often dread planning and preparing for a trip. Not only do I never have the time, but I often get oversaturated by the vast amount of information found online and the fear of getting scammed.

Also:  The best travel credit cards

Over the years, I've found the best websites and apps to help smooth out the planning process. These apps help me keep track of all my reservations, send me booking reminders, and guarantee I always find the best prices -- because there is nothing worse than falling for tourist traps or overpriced offerings.

Whether you are a spontaneous or a nitty-gritty planner traveler, ZDNET has tested and reviewed the best trip planner apps on the market. Our top pick for the best trip planner site and app is Booking.com due to its easy-to-use user interface, extensive booking capabilities, and pricing. However, since not every trip or traveler is the same, we've included several options to help you plan and stay organized during your travels.

Keep reading to learn more about ZDNET's expert-tested and reviewed trip planner apps.

The best trip planner apps of 2023

Booking.com, best overall trip planner.

  • Multiple bookings
  • Great deals
  • Can earn points from bookings and reservations
  • Easy to use
  • No group planning
  • Can't organize bookings per trip

Booking.com features:   Platform: App and website |  Compatibility:  iOS and Android |  Pricing:  Free |  Booking:  Yes |  Group planning:  No

When planning my trips, I always make a stop at the Booking.com app, especially when reserving hotels. I find their user interface visually appealing and easy to use, and that it provides just the right amount of information I need when scrolling through hotel suggestions. Personally, I enjoy that I can add my top picks to my favorites with a quick tap of a heart, glance through reviews, look at cancellation policies, and even find out how far away hotels are from key spots. Through Booking.com, you can also book flights, car rentals, taxis, and city attractions, making it a great all-in-one place to plan and book upcoming weekend getaways or longer vacations. While I have personally never used the car rentals, taxis, or city attractions components of the app, I enjoy knowing that if I ever needed to, I can quickly hop on my phone and glance at the latest offerings.

My favorite feature when using Booking.com to plan trips is the offers and promotions it displays for users. In the app, when you click your profile, you can see your "Genius" loyalty program status as well as discover the best deals around the world for your specific chosen dates. My only critique of Booking.com is that it does not enable group trip planning or let you organize your bookings per trip. This means if you are planning a trip with a friend, only one person can book and have access to reservations.

Best trip planner for organization

  • Synced with e-mail inbox
  • Organizes reservations no matter where you book
  • Works offline
  • Can't make any bookings
  • Need to pay for advanced features
  • UI could use an upgrade

TripIt features:   Platform:  App and website |  Compatibility: iOS and Android | Pricing: Free or $49 per year | Booking: No | Group planning: Yes

In terms of planning a trip, creating an itinerary, and keeping all your information in one place, TripIt is one of the best travel apps to keep yourself organized. When you first create an account, TripIt will sync with your inbox and automatically add all of your upcoming flights and reservations to your account. You can then modify each trip to include as little or as much information as you'd like. As someone who likes to be spontaneous when traveling, I usually only add the essentials: flight information, hotel reservations, and important documents. However, if you like to plan your trips down by the hour, you can also include activities, restaurant reservations, transportation, and more in your trip plan to share with fellow travelers.

As your trip approaches, TripIt will also send you packing reminders, give you COVID-19 travel guidance, and show transportation options. While you can get most of the essential features within the free version of the app (this is the one I use), you can also pay $49 a year to get advanced features such as check-in reminders, real-time flight alerts, point tracking, and even notifications for drops in airfare prices.

Keep in mind that while TripIt gives you transportation options and finds places near your hotel, you cannot book or make any reservations directly from the app. The app is solely used to organize and keep track of all of your travel plans in one place, no matter where you book them.

Best AI trip planner

  • Personalized travel itinerary
  • Hotel booking
  • Can modify recommendations
  • Group planning enabled
  • Only available as a website
  • No flight or restaurant booking

Guide features:   Platform: Website  Compatibility: all major browsers |  Pricing:  Free | Booking: Yes, but hotels only | Group Planning: Yes  Generative AI is everyone's favorite buzzword this year, and slowly but surely, it has been making its way across all industries -- including the travel industry. Guide is an innovative AI travel planning tool that creates personalized travel itineraries based on your preferences. (Full disclosure, it's also owned by ZDNET's sister company. It's currently in private beta, but you can join a wait list.) All you need to do is select your destination, the dates, whether you are traveling alone or in a group, your budget, and the types of activities you are looking for, and Guide will do the planning.

After generating a trip itinerary for you based on your prompt, Guide then lets you modify and customize the itinerary to your liking. I recently used Guide to plan a six-day trip to Austin, Texas, and this was the feature I enjoyed the most, since I had specific restaurants and activities I wanted to incorporate into my trip, but I also needed some additional recommendations. While you can't book flights or restaurant reservations through Guide, you can book and find great hotel deals powered by Expedia on the platform.

Guide will also give you an overall budget for your trip, a packing list, and a comprehensive list of things to know about your destination -- which may be helpful for some more than others. While my trip to Austin was a solo trip, Guide has a feature where you can invite other fellow travelers to collaborate in planning your trip through Guide's chatbot, GuideBot. This chatbot also works sort of like ChatGPT, where you can ask GuideBot questions about your trip, your destination, or recommendations. Keep in mind you can not ask GuideBot to directly modify your trip for you, and instead need to manually do it yourself -- believe me, I tried.

Tripadvisor

Best trip planner app for reviews.

  • Countless reviews
  • Used by travelers worldwide
  • Variety of information
  • Booking capabilities
  • Great for local spots
  • Booking is not its strongest feature and you may not always find the best deals
  • Doesn't vet reviews

Tripadvisor  features: Platform:  App and website |  Compatibility:  iOS and Android |  Pricing:  Free |  Booking:  Yes |  Group planning:  No

Reading customer reviews is one of the most important steps when planning a trip. While you shouldn't base all of your decisions on reviews, you should consider past customer experiences to get a feel for the brand and company you are about to trust, or the experience you are going to pay for.  When it comes to travel reviews, Tripadvisor is the best trip planner app to rely on. Since the platform has so many reviews for restaurants, activities, accommodations, and locations all over the world, it is always easy and convenient to log onto the app or website to help you make an educated decision. (However, remember that not all Tripadvisor reviews are legit, since the platform does not independently verify customer postings.) Beyond reviews, TripAdvisor also lets you book hotels, restaurants, things to do, and more while also providing detailed insights into their offerings -- including cancellation policies, ratings, and features.

Tripadvisor's "Travelers' Choice" best-of list is also a popular part of its platform, allowing visitors to see top-rated destinations, hotels, restaurants, and things to do around the world. With Tripadvisor, you can plan a trip yourself from scratch, hire a trip designer, or get a custom itinerary built by AI.

Best trip planner app for transportation

  • Great multi-mode travel comparison
  • convenient and seamless transportation booking
  • Multiple currency and language availability
  • Flight deals and suggestions are not the strongest
  • Limited offers depending on the country or city of travel
  • Not the most reliable customer service

Omio features:  Platform:  App and website |  Compatibility:  iOS and Android |  Pricing:  Free |  Booking:  Yes, transportation only |  Group planning:  No

I first discovered Omio when a friend recommended it to me while I was studying abroad in Spain, and ever since I downloaded it, it has become my go-to app for booking the best deals and fares on transportation within Europe. The concept behind Omio is simple: You plug in your departure and arrival location, including the number of people you are traveling with, and add whether you are looking for a one-way or round-trip journey. Omio will then show you the best deals by train, bus, or plane to and from your desired destination, including how much time each option will take you and the number of stops.

The German-based travel booking site is great at aggregating travel information from multiple sites, allowing you to view all of your transportation options in one place. This is incredibly beneficial when planning trips within Europe since there are several ways you can cross each border and often various languages and regulations to keep in mind. Omio is set in English but has multiple additional languages available, as well as currency options. During my time abroad, I solely used Omio to book all of my transportation, including planning a 17-day trip across seven different European countries. Overall, using Omio was not only convenient and seamless but also helped me save hundreds of dollars by helping me maximize my travel time by switching between flights, trains, and buses.

However, since returning from Europe, I have not used Omio as much as I thought I would -- maybe because I have a car and take most of my trips by plane. And Omio's flight deals and suggestions are not the strongest compared to Booking.com or Skyscanner's, which heavily focus on flight deals. I have also found they have some limitations depending on the country or city you are traveling in. Be mindful of the deals and tickets you buy through Omio since some tickets are non-refundable, and some customers complain their customer service is not the best -- although I have yet to have any issues with them.

What is the best trip planner app?

Booking.com gets our vote for the best trip planner app due to its wide selection of accommodations, its points and promotions offerings, and its easy-to-use user interface. Not only does Booking.com help you find the best deals throughout your trip, but it will also help you stay organized throughout your trip by keeping all of your reservations in one place. To determine which trip planner app or combination of trip planners is best for you, check out this comparison chart below.

Which is the right trip planner app for you?

The best trip planner app ultimately depends on your travel and planning style. If you like booking and planning everything in one place while also earning points and getting great deals, then Booking.com is your top app. However, if you are looking for a place to keep all of your accommodations, reservations, and activity details organized, then TripIt is a better app for you. Check out the following chart to help you find the best trip planner app or a combination of apps for you to plan your next adventure.

How did we choose these trip planner apps?

To find the best trip planner apps, we drew upon real-life experiences and tested their performance and capabilities during our latest trips. Ultimately, we weighted the following factors when choosing which trip planners to include on our list:

  • Features: Each app can vary significantly with the features it offers, whether it is solely to book flights and hotels, help you plan your next trip using AI, or help you find the best deals and booking information, each app on this list can help you address several common inconveniences that present themselves while planning that next adventure.
  • Compatibility: An app is of little use if it does not work with your devices, so we look to see what compatibility each trip-planning app offers and which platforms you can access it from. Personally, I enjoy apps that combine an app and website component since this quickly helps me switch between my wide computer screen and my tiny yet portable iPhone screen.
  • Customer reviews: We study real customer reviews and ratings to evaluate customer satisfaction and service. This is incredibly important since most times when you travel, you visit an unknown city or country, and you should be mindful of past experiences others have had.
  • Cost : Most trip planner apps are free, but you may have to upgrade to receive special access to exclusive features or deals. If your app is already free, it means you only have to pay a small amount (often unnoticeable) when you book your accommodations.

What is a trip planner app?

A trip planner app is an app that provides organizational features for your upcoming trip. It is often free and incorporates trip planning tools, whether you are traveling by ground, water or air.

How does a trip planner app work?

A trip planner app can incorporate special features, like an itinerary, calendar, reservation and booking hub, and map assistance. Depending on the app you choose, there is even trip-sharing with friends and family to simplify the entire trip planning process.

How much does a trip planner app cost?

Most trip planner apps are free, but some may offer in-app purchases to upgrade or enhance your experience. Within this list, only Tripit costs money, but only for their advanced features version, which costs $49 a year. However, you can get access to most if not all, trip-planning features, through their free version.

Are there alternative trip planner apps worth considering?

As I mentioned earlier, trip planning heavily depends on your personal style of travel and preferences. However, whether you like to plan your trips down by the minute or prefer to just have the basics, there are several apps that can optimize your planning. Here are a few apps worth considering that almost made it onto our list:

What is the best GPS app for off roading?

  • ExplorerOz Travel

In this article I will discuss why I think these apps are great and why you should try them.

best offroad navigation app_Avenza Maps.jpg

Assumptions about offroad navigation

For this article I am basing my advice on the assumption that you are planning to use any type of motorised vehicle. This is important because apps that are targeted for hikers or bicyclist will suggest routes that are not allowed or suitable for these types of transportation therefor will be omitted from this list.

I’m also assuming you are really into offroading and not overlanding (in the long term, intercontinental sense of the word). Meaning that you will spend most of your time following tracks that you created or downloaded and not roads in far away foreign countries. If the latter is your plan, my advice is to stick with google maps or maps.me. That is what I did and it got me to the other side of the planet twice.

But the most important piece of advice I have for you, before diving into a detailed list, is which app is best for you depends on what you like. So try them out, and works best for you.

What does an offroad navigation app has to have?

Two important elements that an offroad vehicle navigation app should do are:

  • Offline maps
  • Tracking where you’ve been
  • Rich map data that extends beyond the standard road system of the places you want to travel

Each of the apps mentioned in this article has at least these three features. However, on some of these apps you will need to pay either a membership fee or once off. And some apps will charge you more for different map layers with extra information such as National Park borders or private land borders. This type of information is very regional therefor I’ve grouped the apps by geographical focus:

  • Australia / NZ

Fast, detailed and entirely offline maps with turn-by-turn navigation, based on Open Street Map data (OSM). The great thing about maps.me is that they use vector based maps, meaning you can zoom in forever and never see a single pixel.

Because it is based on OSM data, which is open-source and collected by map enthusiasts around the world, even the smallest footpaths can be found on these maps.

It is easy to select different regions or whole countries to download when you are online so that once you start exploring, you have all the maps you need right there in your pocket.

Another great feature is the snail trail, is the ability to leave a trail on the map where you’ve been and track back the same way.

But most importantly, all these functionalities are for free. And that cannot be said of some of the other apps on this list. Off course it won’t be the best, especially when it comes to different map layers but none of the other maps can beat this price.

What users are saying

Finally 5 stars This app is my favourite navigation vehicle. Recently introduced altitude lines make it a sound competitor to specialised trekking apps. Only a few countries like China and Switzerland have more detailed off road maps available. In Africa, topographical details are plentiful but the overall navigation is a bit difficult. Worldwide, in cities and densely populated areas I still need to use the main competitor to get the whole picture. However, the app has been improving constantly. Pins and bookmarks are easy to put and to edit. It is available off line. It contains an amazing amount of off road details, even if they are not always completely described and searchable. It is the ultimate global navigation app for outdoor activities.

free, US$ 7.99/year for OsmAnd Live | iOS and Android | 4.5 star rating

best offroad navigation app_OsmAnd.jpg

OsmAnd Maps is a map application with access to free, worldwide, and high-quality OpenStreetMap (OSM) data (the same as maps.me). All map data can be stored on your device's memory card for offline use. All the main functionality works both online and offline (no internet needed).

It has some great features that are specifically useful for offroading although most of these are not available in the free version. The contour lines and hill shading make exploring in the mountains much more intuitive. (not available in the free version).

OsmAnd can display different overlays like touring/navigation GPX tracks and additional maps with customizable transparency.

For car navigation, vehicle parameters and specifications can be entered which is great for RVs and expedition trucks and optional speed and altitude display. Lastly it has an option to FAVOUR (rather than avoid) unpaved roads (remember when you have this selected!). How cool is that! The only reason it is in second place for me is because of its price, off-roading and overlanding is expensive enough, so if you are happy using maps.me then perfect, if not then give OsmAnd a try!

Great for turn-by-turn nav on custom routes If you’ve been looking for an app that supports turn-by-turn (including voice) navigation for custom routes, OsmAnd delivers! I had tried many apps, including all the big names in maps and navigation, but none could do what OsmAnd does. I was looking for an app to find off-road routes between destinations and it does this with the flip of a single button. No more choosing “fake” interim destinations to force a specific route. If you want to avoid specific roads that the other switches don’t handle, you can just tap any road (or multiple roads) and your route will not use them. Great app!

3. AVENZA Maps;

Free, us29.99/year | ios and android | 4.7 star rating.

best offroad navigation app_Avenza Maps.jpg

Avenza Maps is a mobile map app that allows you to download maps for offline use on your iOS and Android smartphone or tablet. You might not really call it a navigation app but it is really good but there are people out there who love it.

It is like a digital map store, with the biggest collection of maps. You can easily browse and purchase maps from all over the world using the convenient Avenza Map Store.

Use your device's built-in GPS to track your location on any map. Plot and record information about locations, import and export placemarks, measure distance and area, and even plot photos.

The downside of this app is that is doesn’t do turn by turn navigation, therefor you can really only use it for tracking and pin pointing yourself on the map, tracking and logging your trip. It won’t tell you where to go.

A Must Have I absolutely love this app. My family enjoys , biking, and off highway motorcycle riding which is where this app excels. For all you single track and trail riding motorcycle enthusiasts find your map by searching for either “MVUM” (multi vehicle use map) and/or “OHV” (off highway vehicle). No worries about cell service as this app utilises the GPS in your phone. I also love the ability to plot photos and mark my trails which makes it a joy to share later with friends.

Love this app An excellent navigation app for both on and off the road. I tried it out, taking my motorcyle on a 462 mile route that I imported from GPX file created by another app. It had hundreds of waypoints and thousands of location points spanning the entire length of New Jersey. Both on-road and off-road section showed up as well as showing hiking trails along the way. Great for overland adventures.

3 Best apps for offroad navigation with a focus on the USA

Great to plan routes for off-road riding Downloaded the app and tested it for off-road motorcycle. The automatic tracing of a route over existing marked trails is an awesome feature that makes planning the route considerably easier than with Google Earth or Garmin Basecamp. I downloaded satellite image and usgs topo maps of the area I was riding in so I didn't need to rely on having network or not during the ride. Compared to a Garmin gps unit the only limitation is the device's gps accuracy and recording rate but it's no issue for off-road riding/driving, likely not an issue for hiking neither.

2. onX Offroad

Free, us$29.99/year | ios and android | 4.3 star rating.

best offroad navigation app_OnX.jpg

OnX Offroad is the only app on this list so far that specifically targets offroad vehicle navigation. Next to that is shares popular trails on the map so you don’t have to plan your own and this time around you can just start navigating instead of having to check if it is a hiking trail or not. With more than 985 Million acres of public land and 550,000+ miles of open roads and trails including open dates and width restrictions, onX Offroad is a must-have app for any motorized enthusiast.

Know before you go with the most trusted and accurate GPS satellite / topo trail mapping app. Turn your phone into the best off-road mapping tool for finding open dirt roads and trails, tracking your favorite routes and making custom waypoints along the way. Works using your phone’s GPS when you’re off-grid and offline—with full detail satellite imagery, open trails and remote campsites all while out of cell service.

Gives you more time enjoying the ride and less time on rides that end in a locked gate. If you dirt bike, enduro, moto, adventure bike, ATV, side by side, UTV, SxS, 4X4, wheel, rock crawl, mud, overland or drive dirt roads in your truck, this is the best OHV/ORV app for you.

Best overland platform Today I got back from a multi-day overland trip that took place near San Diego, CA. I used this app to plan the entire route for the trip as well as to see where I was going. The fact that it has thousands of trails already marked makes it very easy to plan a route. Many trails even have a ton of information about them included when you tap them. Even when there’s trails not ‘officially’ marked, it still has most marked as single/dual tracks. You can add different types of markers and waypoints when planning a long trip, which is very useful as they can become very clustered sometimes. Downloading offline maps has never been easier as well. Just pick an area on the map and boom. In my opinion, best off-road/overland maps platform out there. Far easier to use than popular competitors. Definitely made the annual subscription worth it!

3. BackCountry Navigator XE:Outdoor GPS Topo App

$15/year, $20/year, $30/year | android | 4.3 star rating.

best offroad navigation app_Backcountry Navigator XE.jpg

Download and use topo maps offline to explore the outdoors using your smartphone! Use the GPS in your smartphone to navigate, mark your path and record waypoints.

Look at the advantages that BackCountry Navigator XE brings to the table. Easy Grid Based Download of Maps Vector Topo Maps for the World GPS Navigation Planning In The Cloud

It keeps getting better I have been using this app since it was first released as bata and have watched it steadily improve. There is great map support and I love the online storage for my trips. As an added bonus it works well on my Chromebook which I use to preplan my ATV rides. I look forward to watching this app grow as new features are added.

2 best apps for navigation offroad with a focus on Australia and New Zealand

1. exploroz traveller, a$59.99, offline maps a$49.99, tracking a$29/year | ios and android | 4.1 star rating.

best offroad navigation app_ExplorOz Traveller.jpg

What is great about this app, is that it is specifically targeted towards Australia and has all the local maps you need. It is expensive, so you might want to try a free version of one of the world wide oriented apps.

Australian travel app for camping, caravanning, and four wheel driving with maps, tracking and navigation tools. Easy to use. Australian-made. For use online or offline. Ideal for 4WD adventures. POIs & Treks included. Includes EOTopo 2021 maps - online & offline. Turn-by-turn navigation, trip planning, mapping, snail trail, and tracking.

Maps & navigation fully functional when offline Snail Trail plots a line on map to help you backtrack Create auto-routed navigation 191 ExplorOz Treks provided incl. 4wd tracks & deserts Can upload track files as GPX for use as Track Logs

Great for remote travel Great app and in conjunction with the EO toppo high resolution maps is all the mapping needed for remote travel. The inbuilt access to the Explore Oz database of treks and places along with the ability to record routes taken and the ability to have up to date or cached route uploaded to web mapping, when in cellular range, for friends and family to follow the progress of a trip. I was even able to get full functionality using an external bluetooth GPS, on a WiFi only iPad, after receiving prompt support from EO development team giving clear and easy directions on how to modify settings from within the app itself.

Love the whole package..

2. Hema 4X4 Explorer

A$49.99 | ios and android | 2.7 star rating.

best offroad navigation app_4x4 hema.jpg

The Hema 4X4 Explorer App has been developed to allow users to plan, navigate and share their remote trips with ease and confidence. Whether it is an offroad 4WD Adventure, a remote camping trip or a lap around Australia, the 4X4 Explorer app is your perfect travelling companion.

Explore over 690,000kms of 4WD tracks and 545,000km of unsealed roads featured on the Hema Map. Access over 100,000+ points of interest (POI) including 40,000 Hema verified campsites, caravans parks, dump points, lookouts, national parks and much more.

4X4 explorer is not designed for turn by turn navigation and should be used as a guide only.

best road trip tracking app

Very promising!!! I predominantly use the Hema apps (Explorer and 4x4 Explorer) on a phone while travelling. This new app is a big step forward. The previous Explorer as are the other Hema products are raster maps which presents a few problems when used on a small screen. Therefore a vector based app like this new 4x4Explorer app is a welcome addition. It is always crystal clear, gives more info about campsites and other features.

Whatever your preferences are, I’m sure there is the right navigation app out there for you. The Bare Necessities For Your First Overlanding Trip

Frequently Asked Questions

Below I will answer some related frequently asked questions.

Can you use Google Maps for offroading?

Not really, even though Google Maps is available offline it is not very convenient. Nor does it offer detailed topographical maps or allow you to track your route. There are better, also free, option out there.

What is the best off road GPS app for iPhone?

Which app is the best depends on your style of navigating while driving offroad. For iPhone users the best app for offroad navigation which gives turn by turn instructions is OsmAnd. It has many features that are delightful when driving offroad.

Is OnX offroad worth it?

That really depends on which state you live in because the content is not evenly divided across the country. Outside of the USA it is pretty much useless and not worth the money. But with the 7 day free trial you can always try it out in your local area.

Which is better onX or Gaia?

Gaia GPS is still the winner when it comes to offroad navigation. It has way more map layers available which are crucial in planning any adventure. As well as downloading map sections for offline use is much simpler in Gaia GPS.

What is the best off road trail map app?

The best offroad trail map app is Avenza maps. It is a digital map store where you can buy the widest selection of maps to be downloaded into the app and used whenever you need them. If you are looking for easy trails to follow check out gaia.gps or onx offroad.

What is the best app for overlanding?

Without a doubt the best app for overlanding is iOverlander. No serious overland can live without it. It has all the details when it comes to campsites, border crossings and road conditions.

best road trip tracking app

love tracking my rides with Rever . This app does this and a heck of lot more. There is a ton of single track moto rides where I live and the tracking system/gps is very accurate. I like the new feature of auto pause and of course I like to see how fast I ride as this app gives me my highest mph which I can compare with my friends. Before Rever came along I would use Map my ride but this was not a motorcycle specific app. Now I track all of my rides and can share them with my friends. Great app!

KTMColorado

I had planned over 20,000 kms of rides after I had discovered this app. The wife and I are riding 29 states and 3 provinces after I complete a 24 border to border run to Mexico. Planning the trip was easy and with the Butler map overlay completely changed the route we are taking. I was having no luck with the mobile app however... Turns out the email address I used to sign up for facebook was used to log in. Hadn't used that one in years. The found it and it works awesome now! Wicked customer service!

Charles Lott

I love this app , there response to questions and issues are excellent, very prompt and courteous.

Shawn Peters

I ride everyday and this App helps me track my milage , great app...

Steven Pena

I like the record ride feature & I can easily create rides on website , and then use the app on my phone to ride the route.

Dave Dyczewski

The answer then, to my initial question of "Have they really made it better?" would be yes. And as an alternative to other, motorcycle-specific maps, my wife Judy, who is our chief navigator, spent a lot of time comparing several and concluded that the Butler maps are the best.

Ken Bingenheimer

If there is a road not on the map it's probably not worth riding.

The word from the navigator is very clear: The Butler Maps Colorado map is the best .

3 travel apps you need before your next flight to keep you out of long TSA lines

best road trip tracking app

Travel can be stressful, especially when airports are involved.

Flights get delayed, or, worse still, canceled.

Ever-growing security lines sometimes snake through the airport, putting you in jeopardy of missing your flight.

Last-minute changes can happen and derail months of planning, potentially starting off your trip on a bad note.

Programs like TSA PreCheck and Global Entry can help travelers, but there are also ways that tech can help you prepare for your journey and stay aware of the curveballs that might come your way.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

Here are three apps to download before your next trip.

Watch the video above to learn which three apps you need before your next trip.

Airline app

Download your airline’s app!

It keeps all of your travel information in one, easy-to-access place.

Turn on notifications to get immediate alerts when it's time to check in so you'll know if there are any delays or gate changes.

Once you have a boarding pass, save even more time by adding it to the digital wallet on your smartphone.

The lines at airport security can be very unpredictable. Sometimes there is no wait, other times, the line extends into the check-in area.

The Transportation Security Agency’s (TSA) app, MyTSA, tries to make the wait a little more predictable and helps you determine what to expect, especially if you’re traveling from one of the busiest airports in the US.

The app provides a real-time look at your selected airport's wait time, any FAA delays, and which TSA PreCheck lanes are open.

The app also uses historical data to help you plan ahead. So, even if your flight is three days away, the app can show you what you’re likely to encounter that day based on previous experiences.

It’s also a useful resource if you’re unsure about what you can or can’t pack in your carry-on and checked luggage.

Mobile Passport Control

If you’re traveling abroad, the Mobile Passport Control app makes your return through U.S. customs much faster.

The app is a digital version of the Customs and Border Patrol Declaration Form that anyone entering the U.S. is required to fill out.

You can save up to 12 profiles in the app, and only one form is needed per family, per residence.

The app doesn't work at every airport, so check  the CBP website to see where you can use it.

The 8 best sleep tracking apps for android in 2024.

Analyze your sleep patterns with these top mobile sleep trackers

We often don't realize how long we are asleep or the quality of sleep we acquire every night. In fact, the CDC states between 50 and 70 million Americans live with chronic sleep disorders . When it comes to our sleeping habits, sleep-tracking apps paint a bigger picture. We can track how many hours we sleep, the quality of our sleep, and other important data.

Most premium smartwatches have sleep tracking features, but not everyone owns one. Fortunately, there are plenty of smartphone apps that can track your sleep. Our list includes apps that measure various domains associated with sleep quality and provide insights you can share with your physician.

Best smartwatches for sleep tracking in 2024

1 sleep cycle, an easily accessible personalized smart alarm.

Having a sleep-tracking app that follows your sleep cycle is this app's specialty (hence the name Sleep Cycle). Sleep Cycle gives you more insight into your sleep patterns; the app includes measurements and information on sleep quality, duration, and time spent in deep, light, and REM sleep. The smart alarm is one of the app's most intriguing features; you can set it up during your light sleep phase within a custom time window.

You can freely access the Sleep Cycle app's core features. Subscribing unlocks personalized coaching and in-depth sleep reports and removes the limits on your sleep-tracking history.

2 Sleep as Android

Sleep tracking app that values privacy.

Sleep as Android is a reliable sleep-tracking app. The app uses sonar contactless tracking and snore detection to record your sleeping patterns. You can also set a smart alarm to synchronize your wake-up alarms with gradual noises and calming sounds. The best part of this app is how it prioritizes user privacy; you do not need to worry about creating an account to access its features. Additionally, the app allows you to opt out of the analytics to avoid personalized ads and tracking.

Sleep as Android includes free and paid options. The free version includes sleep tracking, but you can receive sleep reports, more in-depth sleep cycle analysis (some extra statistics), and smart (gadget) integrations..

3 BetterSleep

How to set up digital wellbeing on your android phone, best all-in-one sleep app.

When you're looking for a generalist sleep health app with a decent sleep tracker at its core, BetterSleep is a great choice. Inside the BetterSleep app, you can set the sleep tracker to measure your sleep cycle (including the different sleep stages and wake time) and record all your sleep activity to gain insight into what occurs during the night. The app includes resources to learn more about sleep science while giving you relaxing sounds and stories to improve your sleep. A good night's sleep goes a long way; BetterSleep has all the tools you need to help you get there.

Impressive selection of sleep sounds

ShutEye is a sleeping tracking app that includes everything you want: sleep tracking (duration, sorted by the various sleep stages ), sleep analysis and goals, reminders, and custom sounds. But what's great about the ShutEye app is its tools to improve your sleep; you can listen to relaxing notes (ocean waves and rain, for example) and meditations to help you fall asleep while waking up to other pleasant sounds.

When you load the ShutEye app, you will be asked to complete a survey regarding sleep quality and any diagnosed sleep disorders; this information is used to generate an initial sleep report to guide you through improving your habits. The app also offers a premium subscription option. Unlocking the premium plan will grant you access to more sleep sounds, sleep analysis, snore recording, and a smart alarm. But the free features cover everything you want from a sleep-tracking app.

Specializing in snore detection

Some people struggle to sleep due to sleep apnea . You may not realize you have it if you're a solo sleeper. This is where apps like SnoreLab can help. SnoreLab provides automatic sleep tracking and snore detection while compiling all your sleeping activities into a report. The app includes a snore score and highlights, so you know exactly how often and how much you snore (it even logs details on frequency and intensity). If you're concerned about your snoring habits, the app also has remedies and tips for managing it.

6 Sleep Monitor

A handy sleep tracking app for offline use.

Sleep Monitor offers basic sleep-tracking features without feeling pressured to go premium. You can use Sleep Monitor to acquire a sleep score, sleep trend chart, and sleep records (only the recent seven get saved in the free version). You can also use the app to record notes, listen to lullabies, and set a smart alarm. If you're also uneasy about permitting microphone permissions, you can opt into using your phone's accelerator sensors for sleep tracking. The best part of the app is that it works offline, so you don't have to worry about losing any data during an outage.

7 Sleepwave: Smart Alarm Clock

Brilliant use of motion sensing technology.

Sleepwave is a sleep-tracking and alarm app combined into one. The app doesn't rely on recording to track your sleep; it uses motion-sensing technology as an alternative. Sleepwave uses PureTone motion to produce a low-powered ultrasonic sound wave through your device's speakers. Any disruptions it picks up (such as movement) are used to measure your activity. The only downside of using this tech is that your phone requires being laid on a flat surface 2m away from your bed (while most sleep trackers will work fine next to a pillow). Otherwise, the setup works well to record your nighttime activities.

Outside sleep tracking, it offers calming soundscapes and a well-attuned smart alarm. The app also features a daily "Wavescape" (pattern-filled puzzles) to refocus your mind — sometimes, that's all we need to do to calm our minds for a good night's rest.

8 Pokémon Sleep

A great distraction to your sleeping anxiety.

It can be demoralizing to learn that your sleeping habits are poor. The added stress starts up a vicious cycle. But what about trying out an app that turns sleep tracking into a bit of a game to help relieve some stress? Surprisingly, Pokémon Sleep is consistent at sleep tracking , even if it's a game first and a sleep-tracking app second.

The idea behind Pokémon Sleep is to track your sleep while providing an infographic of your habits. The app incentivizes sleeping to find more Pokémon — to fill your sleep Pokédex. Pokémon Sleep also includes the essentials you want in a sleep-tracking app, such as relaxing sounds, smart alarms, and audio playback of your sleeping. If Pokémon Go can get more people active outdoors, maybe Pokémon Sleep can work its magic with your sleeping schedule.

A good night's sleep is essential

While most mobile sleep-tracking apps may not yield perfect accuracy , they still give us insight. Some apps, like Oura, require external accessories to measure sleep tracking , which defeats the purpose of previewing an app before making a decision; at the end of the day, no sleep tracker will give you the exact measurements, but it's important to see if the mobile app (or accessory) can chart consistent results.
