Courchevel, France

Where to stay: Ski-in ski-out Portetta in Courchevel Moriond (1650) is a lovely rustic-chic alpine retreat. There are lots of dark wood and log fires, a great spa (Bamford facials, double treatment rooms, gym, hammam), an Angela Hartnett Italian-influenced mountain restaurant, and 44 rooms including six loft duplexes and various family options with extra bunk rooms. If you're travelling in a group, the beautiful Chalet Montanum sleeps nine and offers a true ski-in, ski-out experience – there's slope access from the end of the drive.

If there’s one thing that can make a British winter appealing, it’s the thought of getting cosy in the Cotswolds . Amid a quintessentially English landscape, publicans pull artisan ales, sipped by roaring fires. Frosty walks ramble past country manors and up green hills topped with Iron Age forts. But while its home to some of the most beautiful villages in the UK , this isn’t back-in-time England. Paris, France

The City of Love should be an obvious pick in February, but potential suitors are all-too-often put off by the weather. Très grosse erreur . Anyone who knows the French knows they scarper tout de suite in summer, shuttering restaurants, frustrating foreigners and not giving a tiny French fig. Come instead in winter, when everything’s open, visitors are fewer, reservations easier and rates lower. All the best stuff is indoors anyway: cute, candle-lit bistros; echoey art museums; bo-bo (bourgeois-boho) bars. South Pigalle – or SoPo – still sizzles as one of Paris ’s hottest spots, where the best table is at Bouillon Pigalle. The queue around the block is worth it – three-course meals with drinks here can cost less than €25, practically unheard of within the list of the best restaurants in Paris .

Where to stay: Parisians in the know will recommend Château Voltaire , once the showroom for cult fashion label Zadig & Voltaire and now a super chic bolthole on the rue Saint-Roch. In terms of Paris hotels with a great location, it's hard to beat La Réserve which faces the Grand Palais and, at a slightly greater distance, the Eiffel Tower, overlooks the Champs-Elysées and is only a few doors down from the presidential palace. For Eiffel Tower views, take over The Margaux , a three-bedroom Airbnb apartment on the Left Bank.

Swap the white sludge on your doorstep for a bright white beach in the Bahamas . It’s the best time to experience Ibiza as the locals know it – almond trees flush pink-white with blossom; beach bars and pavement cafés are laid-back not lairy; and the tapas and drinks come cheap. Bargain isn’t a word too often associated with this Balearic, but without the club crowds, proprietors look to lure customers with deals. During winter nights, island restaurants participate in Gastrojueves – Gastro Thursdays – where meals are offered half-price. Craving a blowout? Small towns across Ibiza celebrate Carnival with parades early in the month; superclubs such as Pacha throw the after-parties. Really, though, it’s all about taking time to soak up the quieter side of Ibiza. Ibiza’s bohemian north is the best place to discover a more peaceful side to the island, and one of the smartest experiences here is found at Ibiza Horse Valley . This sanctuary rehabilitates mistreated animals and reintroduces them to riding, offering horseback trips to the White Isle’s untouched forest, remote mountaintops and secret beaches .

Its topography is diverse and dramatic, with adventures of many kinds: go driving over dunes and diving in the marine-rich waters off the Musandam Peninsula; stay at remote Bedouin camps or polished-luxury resorts from desert to beach. February is the last month of winter in Oman , which means it’s still bearably hot rather than unbearably hot.

Cartagena, Colombia

But the locals in its Getsemani neighbourhood still cling to artsy authenticity: streets here belong to bright murals and vagabond musicians, Champeta dance clubs (Afro-Caribbean beats meet salsa) and hip restaurants (find Di Silvio Trattoria’s thin-crust pizzas in a former soap factory). Ready to dial it down? Rent a boat for the one-hour ride to the Rosario Islands, where simple beach shacks pour Mojitos into coconuts on peaceful, powder-soft beaches. Finnish Lapland

February in Finnish Lapland might be bracing, but there’s plenty going on here that’s hot. How about hopping aboard the world’s only sauna gondola – a wooden cable car that treats passengers to a steamy ride over the slopes of Ylläs Ski Resort? Or working up a sweat by fat-biking across Ylläs National Park’s stark-white scenery (the thick treads help plucky cyclists pedal in deep snow). Of course, Christmas is high season here, but conditions are every bit as romantic in February, without the sky-high prices or crowds. Northern Lights stalkers also have a good chance of spotting those elusive, swirling illuminations – perhaps best viewed from the Aurora Domes at Harriniva, where igloo-like tents are fitted out with a transparent wall, wood burner and Champagne. Experiences with the Indigenous Sami people of Lapland are becoming ever more popular, but be sure your operator is providing a genuine connection with their culture (rather than a ‘show’). Done right, this kind of tourism helps boost a local economy that can only rely on a lucrative revenue stream – tourism – a few months of the year. Magnetic North Travel , for example, organises time with genuine reindeer herders and their families, so you get a real sense of their way of life.

Kerala, India

If you're dreaming of drifting down Kerala 's tranquil backwaters in relative solitude, wait until February. The tail end of peak season sees low humidity, practically no rain and fewer tour groups to disturb your zen-like state of mind. Whether you prefer to hide away on an elegant houseboat or enjoy southern hospitality at a local homestay, it's impossible not to fall for this state's easygoing charm. Spend your evenings lingering over delicious South Indian thalis, exploring the meandering Dutch canals of Cochin and lazing on Varkala's deserted beaches. Hiring a houseboat to explore the backwaters is undoubtedly a magical experience, but the popularity of the practice has led to some less-than-honourable operations that cut corners and pollute the water. Bahia, Brazil

India is a country that’s almost a continent. From the sky-high peaks of the Himalayas to the waterlogged jungles of Kerala and the dry-as-a-bone deserts of Gujarat and Rajasthan , this enormous nation covers an astonishing variety of terrain. There’s always somewhere worth visiting no matter what the weather is doing.

The northern hemisphere winter – from December to March – is the optimum time to visit the vibrant cities and historic temples and forts of north India , while the rainy monsoon period from June to September is peak season in the dry mountains of Ladakh .

However, even at the height of the rainy season, there are plenty of good reasons to visit this remarkable nation – not least the festival calendar, which is packed year-round. Here’s our guide to the best times to come to India .

The peak season for tourism in India coincides with dry skies and warm but not baking temperatures in the plains – in other words, perfect traveling weather. The balmy, sunny days are ideal for visiting India’s teeming cities, and most of the country is ripe for exploration, though it can be frosty in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Even in the steamy south, humidity hovers at manageable levels and temperatures dip overnight, making it easier to sleep, though this is also the time for peak prices almost everywhere. Another hassle is the morning fog, which can disrupt air travel and other forms of transport in the northern plains.

December to March is also the sweet spot for lowland adventures. June to November is the best time to hit the Himalayas

India’s shoulder season means different things depending on where you go in the country. The plains are drenched by the monsoon rains from June to September, and Goa’s beach resorts become ghost towns, but backpackers and trekkers flood into the mountains, filling Ladakh’s lodges, tented camps, and yoga retreats.

This is the prime time for treks on India’s high-altitude trails, but roads and paths through the foothills turn into torrents, national park trails close, and views disappear behind swirling clouds. That might give an impression of a country besieged by rain, but it doesn’t rain all day every day; there’s still plenty to see and do, with bargain prices for accommodations and tours.

As the rains clear from September, tourism picks up in the plains and the foothills, but Ladakh closes down for the season, and public buses between Leh and Manali stop running. October and November are great times to visit almost everywhere else in India – prices remain below the peak, skies are clear and the trekking season gets underway in the foothills. This is also a great month to visit desert areas such as Rajasthan, which can be surprisingly green.

In June or July, Rath Yatra sees effigies of Lord Jagannath – Vishnu as Lord of the Universe – hauled through the streets on vast, colorful chariots, most famously in Puri in Odisha (Orissa). Buddhist festivals fill the gompas of Ladakh – Hemis Tsechu is a glorious spectacle, with costumed dances and the unfurling of a giant thangka (Buddhist painting) at Hemis Gompa .

August is jam-packed with festival action. Kerala’s exhilarating boat races take place on the second Sunday of August and there are patriotic flag-hoisting ceremonies and parades in Delhi on August 15 to celebrate India’s independence. Falling in August or September, Ganesh Chaturthi sees the ritual immersion of thousands of colorful idols of the elephant-headed god in Mumbai .

There’s more action in October and November, as Hindus honor Durga, the fearsome form of the mother goddess, most famously at Navratri and Durga Puja (celebrated enthusiastically in Kolkata and West Bengal). Many areas throw lavish celebrations for Dussehra, celebrating the victory of Hindu god Rama over demon-king Ravana and the triumph of good over evil (festivities are particularly colorful in Kullu and Mysuru ).

This is also the season for Diwali (Deepavali) , which brings fireworks and twinkling lights to towns and villages across India, and the Camel Fair in Pushkar , which attracts 200,000 people and 50,000 camels, horses, and cattle. Sikhs celebrate Nanak Jayanti – the birthday of Guru Nanak, founder of Sikhism – with prayers, kirtan (devotional singing), and processions, especially in Punjab and Haryana .

India is a massive country, home to more than 1 billion people. Complex, intricate, overwhelming, and beautiful, there are many reasons to visit the South Asia destination, and many things to consider before booking a fabulous trip. "India is not only about forts, palaces, and temples; it's about five-star deluxe properties , delicious food, and the human experience," says Marion Miller, an India travel specialist with Micato Safaris and a Travel + Leisure A-List Advisor . That said, Miller also wants travelers to know that there are better — and worse — times to arrive. "India is not a year-round destination," she says. "Within the timeframe that you travel to India, there are also optimal times; it just depends on where you want to go." Best Times to Visit India for Smaller Crowds

With such a tremendous number of residents, plus nearly 20 million tourists per year, you simply have to expect crowds in India year-round. That said, there are times of day when crowds may be smaller. "When you see [monuments like] the Taj Mahal, visit in the morning. Then it is very calm," says Miller. "We usually go very early in the morning, around 5:30 a.m., so that we are the first in line. Then it is less crowded and you can get those famous photos. There are crowds [in India]; you can't really get away from that."

Best Times to Visit India for Good Weather

Determining the best weather is dependent on where in India you want to visit. The country is the seventh largest in the world in terms of landmass, so the weather can be dramatically different from one part to another. "Northern India has its seasons, just like Europe and the U.S.," says Miller. "I love October, because temperatures are lovely; it's between 75 and 85 degrees, with a slight nip in the air, something that says fall is coming." November is the same as October, except temperatures dip a little bit more, between 70 and 80 degrees. In the northern part of India, you may even need a light jacket by December. Miller says February and March are lovely, too, as spring begins and the flowers start to bloom. "The south is tropical," she said. "The coastline, like Chennai, Goa, and Bangalore, will have more humid temperatures, and there is not much difference in temperature there during the year."

Best Times to Visit India for Lower Prices

Between mid-April and mid-September, India has its monsoon season, and temperatures soar up to nearly 110 degrees. If you are looking for travel deals, this would be the time, but it's also one of the least favorable stretches during which to visit; the extreme heat and torrential rains often deter travelers.

A caveat to the above: monsoon season is one of the best times to visit India if you want to spot the country's majestic resident tigers. "Tigers are very elusive creatures," says Miller. "They are beautiful animals, and they are easily seen when it is hot because they are hunting for water. I had an avid photographer visit in April last year and he saw 26 tigers."

When it comes to festivals in India, there is never a wrong time, as the country always has a reason to celebrate. Two of the largest festivals in India are Diwali and Holi. The holidays run on a lunar calendar, so the dates change every year, but Diwali is typically in the winter and Holi is typically in the spring. "Diwali is the Festival of Light," says Miller. "It's a lot of lights, people give each other gifts, and it's also a time where they shoot lots of fireworks into the sky." Holi is the festival that welcomes spring. It is a festival of colors, where anyone and everyone throws colorful dye at each other, filling the air, their clothing, faces, and hair with bright, springtime hues. "There is also Dussehra [usually in October], which is the festival of good prevailing over evil," Miller says. "Another festival called Raksha Bandhan [usually in August] celebrates the connection between siblings. Plus there are so many gods and goddesses, and they are all being celebrated."

As to be expected, the worst time to visit India is also the best time to get deals, but you have to consider if those deals are worth the extreme weather. Between April and September, temperatures are extraordinarily high, and monsoons make traveling quite difficult.

The most influential feature of the Subcontinent’s climate is the wet season, or monsoon. This breaks on the Keralan coast at the end of May, and works its way northeast across the country over the following month and a half. During the monsoon, regular and prolonged downpours are interspersed with bursts of hot sunshine, and the pervasive humidity can be intense.

At the height of the monsoon – especially in the jungle regions of the northwest and the low-lying delta lands of Bengal – flooding can severely disrupt communications, causing widespread destruction. In the Himalayan foothills, landslides are common, and entire valley systems can be cut off for weeks.

The best time to visit most of India is during the cool, dry season, between November and March. Delhi , Agra, Varanasi, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are ideal at this time of year, and temperatures in Goa and central India remain comfortable.

The heat of the south is never less than intense but it becomes stifling in May and June. Aim to be in Tamil Nadu and Kerala between January and March.

However, from March onwards, the Himalayas grow more accessible for hikers. The trekking season reaches its peak in August and September while the rest of the Subcontinent is being soaked by the rains.

By September, the monsoon has largely receded from the north, but it takes another couple of months before the clouds disappear altogether from the far south. The east coast of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu , and the south of Kerala , get a second drenching between October and December, when the “northwest” or “retreating” monsoon sweeps in from the Bay of Bengal . By December, however, most of the Subcontinent enjoys clear skies and relatively cool temperatures.

The best months to visit India would be either November or February. These months are in the shoulder season between peak tourist months of December and January, but before the monsoons begin across the country.

Visiting India in winter

Mid-winter sees the most marked contrasts between the climates of north and south India. While Delhi , for example, may be ravaged by chill winds blowing off the snowfields of the Himalayas, the Tamil plains and coastal Kerala , more than 1000km south, still stew under fierce post-monsoon sunshine.

Visiting India in December to February

The months of November, December and January are peak tourist season for the beach towns of Goa. At this time the coastal areas are blessed with dry weather and balmy temperatures post monsoon. This is also the season when most of Goa’s famous club nights and parties take place.

Over Christmas and New Year, Goa is overwhelmed by domestic tourists as well as international visitors. If you plan to travel here in December and January, we recommend booking your transport and accommodation well in advance.

Meanwhile, over in Delhi , the winter months are some of the worst for the city’s air pollution levels. It is in winter when Delhi experiences the worst of its smog.

When to visit India in Spring

As spring gathers pace, the centre of the Subcontinent starts to heat up again, and by late March thermometers nudge 33°C across most of the Gangetic Plains and Deccan plateau.

Visiting India in March to May

Holi, the festival of colours, takes place in March. If you’re lucky enough to be in India during Holi festival in March, you will experience an amazing atmosphere of fun, celebration and bright colours.

March is also considered the best time of year to visit the wildlife parks of central India, such as Ranthambore and Kanha.

Temperatures in the northern parts of the country, reach soaring heights of 36°C to 40°C, particularly in Delhi

On the coast, places like Goa and Kerala get a heavy rainfall and intense humidity during the month of May.

Temperatures peak in May and early June, when anyone who can retreats to the hill stations. Above the baking Subcontinental land mass, hot air builds up and sucks in humidity from the southwest, causing the onset of the monsoon in late June, and bringing relief to millions of overheated Indians.

Visiting India in summer

Summer marks the start of the monsoon season for most parts of the country. Heavy rainfall will soak most of the country during the summer months, making it humid and difficult to get around, particularly in rural areas.

Most domestic and international tourists escape to the Indian countryside and visit the hill stations, in Leh and Ladakh. If you do visit India during the monsoon season, you should pack pack waterproof clothing and sturdy shoes.

Visiting India in June to August

Avoid the coastal areas of the country during the summer months, as conditions are poor and most of the Goan beach resorts close down. Instead, head inland to the countryside of Tamil Nadu and Goa and visit some of India’s hill stations .

In the north of India, July and August are great months to visit the hill stations of Ladakh. Rajasthan also manages to escape the humidity and rainfall of the monsoon, more than other areas. Prices also drop outside of the peak tourist season, so this is a good time to grab a bargain.

When to visit India in autumn

The autumn months are relatively comfortable for those visiting India. Once the rains have died down, visitors start returning to India’s main attractions.

Visiting India in September to November

October and November are suitable times to visit Delhi and the Golden Triangle, as there are more bearable temperatures, similar to in February and March.

However, during October and November, you may encounter a lot more tourists at the popular sites and landmarks. Crowds can become a nuisance for places like the Red Fort or the Taj Mahal . Both domestic and international tourists visit the capital at this time.

September and October are good months to visit Kerala , as it has a more comfortable climate, with less humidity, a cool wind and breeze.

Diwali, one of India’s biggest festivals, takes place at this time of year. The festival of lights, usually begins in October or at the beginning of November.

Delhi is hugely overpopulated and suffers from terrible air pollution. The city experiences both weather extremes, from icy winds to sweltering heat waves. With that in mind, the best time to visit Delhi is some time between November to March.

Like with Delhi , the best time of the year to visit Taj Mahal would be between November to March.

Virtually every temple in every town or village across the country has its own festival . The biggest and most spectacular include Puri’s Rath Yatra festival in June or July, the Hemis festival in Ladakh, also held in June or July, Pushkar’s camel fair in November, Kullu’s Dussehra , Madurai’s three annual festivals and, of course, the Kumbh Mela , held in turn at Allahabad, Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain. While mostly religious in nature, merrymaking rather than solemnity are generally the order of the day, and onlookers are invariably welcome. Indeed, if you’re lucky enough to coincide with a local festival, it may well prove to be the highlight of your trip.

The calendar below includes details of the main national and regional celebrations. Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and Jain festivals follow the Indian lunar calendar and their dates therefore vary from year to year – we’ve given the lunar month (Magha, Phalguna, Chaitra, and so on), where relevant. The lunar calendar adds a leap month every two or three years to keep it in line with the seasons. Muslim festivals follow the Islamic calendar , whose year is shorter and which thus loses about eleven days per annum against the Gregorian.

In recent years, there has been an explosion in the number of contemporary, pop and fusion music festivals , as India develops a circuit something like the UK and other parts of Europe. Examples include Festa de Diu , Ragasthan , Jodhpur RIFF and Magnetic Fields .

You may, while in India, be lucky enough to be invited to a wedding . These are jubilant affairs, always scheduled on auspicious days. A Hindu bride dresses in red for the ceremony, and marks the parting of her hair with red sindur and her forehead with a bindi . She wears gold or bone bangles, which she keeps on for the rest of her married life. Although the practice is officially illegal, large dowries often change hands. These are usually paid by the bride’s family to the groom, and can be contentious; poor families feel obliged to save for years to get their daughters married.

Principal Indian holidays

India has only four national public holidays as such: Jan 26 (Republic Day); Aug 15 (Independence Day); Oct 2 (Gandhi’s birthday); and Dec 25 (Christmas Day). Each state, however, has its own calendar of public holidays; you can expect most businesses to close on the major holidays of their own religion. The Hindu lunar calendar months are given in brackets here.

Jan–Feb (Magha–Phalguna)

NHampi Utsav : Government-sponsored music and dance festival.

H Pongal (1 Magha): Tamil harvest festival celebrated with decorated cows, processions and rangolis (chalk designs on the doorsteps of houses). Pongal is a sweet porridge made from newly harvested rice and eaten by all, including the cows. The festival is also known as Makar Sankranti, and celebrated in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and the east of India.

H Sagar Mela : Pilgrims come from all over the country to Sagardwip, on the mouth of the Hooghly 150km south of Kolkata, to bathe during Makar Sankranti.

N International Kite Festival/Uttarayan (Jan 14). Coinciding with Makar Sankranti, Ahmedabad (Gujarat) hosts the most spectacular of all of India’s kite festivals.

H Vasant Panchami (5 Magha): One-day spring festival in honour of Saraswati, the goddess of learning, celebrated with kite-flying, the wearing of yellow saris and the blessing of schoolchildren’s books and pens by the goddess.

N Republic Day (Jan 26): A military parade in Delhi typifies this state celebration of India’s republic-hood, followed on Jan 29 by the “Beating the Retreat” ceremony outside the presidential palace in Delhi.

H Teppa Floating Festival (16 Magha). Meenakshi and Shiva are towed around the Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam tank in boats lit with fairy lights – a prelude to the Tamil marriage season in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

N Elephanta Music and Dance Festival . Classical Indian dance performed with the famous rock-cut caves in Mumbai harbour as a backdrop.

Feb–March (Phalguna)

B Losar (1 Phalguna): Tibetan New Year celebrations among Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhist communities, especially at Dharamsala (HP).

H Shivratri (10 Phalguna): Anniversary of Shiva’s tandav (creation) dance, and his wedding anniversary. Popular family festival but also a sadhu festival of pilgrimage and fasting, especially at important Shiva temples.

H Holi (15 Phalguna): Water festival held during Dol Purnima (full moon) to celebrate the beginning of spring, most popular in the north. Expect to be bombarded with water, paint, coloured powder and other mixtures; they can permanently stain clothing, so don’t go out in your Sunday best.

N Khajuraho Festival of Dance : The country’s finest dancers perform in front of Madhya Pradesh’s famous erotic sculpture-carved shrines.

N Goa Carnival : Goa’s own Mardi Gras features float processions and feni -induced mayhem in the state capital, Panjim.

March–April (Chaitra)

H Gangaur (3 Chaitra): Rajasthani festival (also celebrated in Bengal and Odisha) in honour of Gauri (Parvati), marked with singing and dancing.

H Ramanavami (9 Chaitra): Birthday of Rama, the hero of the Ramayana, celebrated with readings of the epic and discourses on Rama’s life and teachings.

C Easter (moveable feast): Celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Good Friday in particular is a day of festivity.

P Pateti :Parsi new year, also known as Nav Roz, celebrating the creation of fire. Feasting, services and present-giving.

P Khorvad Sal (a week after Pateti): Birthday of Zarathustra (aka Zoroaster). Celebrated in the Parsis’ fire temples, and with feasting at home.

April–May (Vaisakha)

HS Baisakhi (1 Vaisakha): To the Hindus, it’s the solar new year, celebrated with music and dancing; to the Sikhs, it’s the anniversary of the foundation of the Khalsa (Sikh brotherhood) by Guru Gobind Singh. Processions and feasting follow readings of the Granth Sahib scriptures.

H Chithirai : Lively procession at Madurai in Tamil Nadu. See p.1016.

J Mahavir Jayanti (13 Vaisakha):Birthday of Mahavira, the founder of Jainism. The main Jain festival of the year, observed by visits to sacred Jain sites, especially in Rajasthan and Gujarat, and with present-giving.

H Puram : Frenzied drumming and elephant parades in Thrissur, Kerala.

B Buddha Jayanti (16 Vaisakha): Buddha’s birthday. He achieved enlightenment and nirvana on the same date. Sarnath (UP) and Bodh Gaya (Bihar) are the main centres of celebration.

May–June (Jyaishtha)

H Ganga Dussehra (10 Jyaishtha): Bathing festival to celebrate the descent to earth of the goddess of the Ganges.

June–July (Ashadha)

H Rath Yatra (2 Ashadha): Festival held in Puri (and other places, especially in the south) to commemorate Krishna’s (Lord Jagannath’s) journey to Mathura.

H Teej (3 Ashadha): Festival in honour of Parvati to welcome the monsoon. Particularly celebrated in Rajasthan.

B Hemis Tsechu Held sometime between late June and mid-July, this spectacular Ladakh festival features chaam (lama dances) to signify the victory of Buddhism over evil.

July–Aug (Shravana)

H Naag Panchami (3 Shravana): Snake festival in honour of the naga snake deities. Mainly celebrated in Rajasthan and Maharashtra.

H Raksha Bandhan/Narial Purnima (16 Shravana): Festival to honour the sea god Varuna. Brothers and sisters exchange gifts, the sister tying a thread known as a rakhi to her brother’s wrist. Brahmins, after a day’s fasting, change the sacred thread they wear.

N Independence Day (Aug 15): India’s biggest secular celebration, on the anniversary of Independence from the UK.

Aug–Sept (Bhadraparda)

H Ganesh Chaturthi (4 Bhadraparda): Festival dedicated to Ganesh, especially celebrated in Maharashtra. In Mumbai, huge processions carry images of the god to immerse in the sea.

H Onam : Keralan harvest festival, celebrated with snake-boat races. The Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race at Alappuzha (held on the 2nd Sat of Aug) is the most spectacular, with long boats crewed by 150 rowers.

H Janmashtami (23 Bhadraparda) : Krishna’s birthday, an occasion for fasting and celebration, especially in Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan (UP).

Sept–Oct (Ashvina)

H Dussehra/Dasara (1–10 Ashvina): Ten-day festival (usually two days’ public holiday) associated with vanquishing demons, in particular Rama’s victory over Ravana in the Ramayana, and Durga’s over the buffalo-headed Mahishasura (particularly in West Bengal, where it is called Durga Puja). Dussehra (known as Dasara in south India) celebrations include performances of the Ram Lila (life of Rama). Best in Mysuru (Karnataka), Ahmedabad (Gujarat) and Kullu (Himachal Pradesh). Durga Puja is best seen in Kolkata where it is an occasion for exchanging gifts, and every locality has its own competing street-side image.

N Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday (Oct 2): Solemn commemoration of independent India’s founding father.

Oct–Nov (Kartika)

H Diwali (Deepavali) (15 Kartika): Festival of lights, and India’s biggest, to celebrate Rama’s and Sita’s homecoming in the Ramayana. Festivities include the lighting of oil lamps and firecrackers, and the giving and receiving of sweets and gifts. Diwali coincides with Kali Puja, celebrated in temples dedicated to the wrathful goddess, especially in Bengal, and often accompanied by the ritual sacrifice of goats.

J Jain New Year (15 Kartika): Coincides with Diwali, so Jains celebrate alongside Hindus.

S Nanak Jayanti (16 Kartika): Guru Nanak’s birthday marked by prayer readings and processions, especially in Amritsar and in the rest of the Punjab, and at Patna (Bihar).

Nov–Dec (Margashirsha or Agrahayana)

H Sonepur Mela : World’s largest cattle fair at Sonepur (Bihar).

N Pushkar Camel Fair : Camel herders don their finest attire for this massive livestock market on the fringes of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan.

Dec–Jan (Pausa)

N Poush Mela (Dec 22–25): Held in Shantiniketan near Kolkata, this festival is renowned for its musical performances by Bauls (mystic minstrels).

C Christmas (Dec 25): Popular in Christian areas of Goa and Kerala, and in big cities.

H Kumbh Mela : Major festival held at four holy cities in rotation, with each location hosting once every twelve years: Allahabad (UP), Nasik (Maharashtra), Ujjain (MP) or Haridwar (Uttarakhand). The Allahabad event is the most important and drew 120 million people in 2013; there are also Ardh (half) Kumbh Melas in between, the next at Allahabad in 2019.

M Ramadan : The month during which Muslims may not eat, drink or smoke from sunrise to sunset, and should abstain from sex. Muslim areas tend to come alive in the evenings as locals break their fast after prayers ( iftar ) and shop for Id. Estimated future dates are: May 27 to June 25, 2017, May 16 to June 14, 2018, and May 6 to June 4, 2019.

M Id ul-Fitr : Feast to celebrate the end of Ramadan. The precise date of the festival depends on exactly when the new moon is sighted, and so cannot be predicted with complete accuracy. Estimated dates (though these may vary by a day or two) are: June 26, 2017, June 15, 2018, and June 5, 2019.

For first-timers to India, the travel routes usually focus on Delhi , Agra , and Jaipur (Pink City) with Varanasi , or Mumbai , Goa ,and Kerala in the south. With time permitting, you can also extend your trip to Jodhpur (Blue City), Udaipur (White City), and Jaisalmer (Golden City) in the western desert, Rajasthan . For these areas:

If you cannot stand the burning hotness, avoid April to June .
If you don't like heavy rain, avoid August. The monsoon will approach to India from June and fade away after September. August is the wettest month. But you can still find some hours for sightseeing during the rest of monsoon season as the rainfall might not last for several days.
If you'd like to experience a desert camp in the western desert, avoid May and June as some resorts in the desert are closed because of the heat. Accommodations in city areas is still OK to stay in. The desert is a good destinations in rainy season as it's hardly affected.
If you want to relax on the beach in Goa, avoid June to August as summer's big sea currents are not safe for swimming and many resorts will close.

Visiting India in March: Start of India's Hot Season

Average temperature ranges : 16 to 32°C (61–90°F) in north India (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur), 25 to 33°C (77–92°F) in central and south India (Goa, Mumbai, Kelara)

Most of India starts to get hot from March. Many locals go to hill stations in the Himalayan foothills to escape the heat. It is still comfortable to visit popular cities like Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur and enjoy cooling down in the sea in Goa .

March is the month when the Festival of Colors (Holi) is held. People throw vibrant colors over each other to celebrate the triumph of good over evil, welcome spring, and pray for good luck. Visiting India in April: Hot, but Better than May

Average temperature ranges : 21 to 37°C (70–99°F) in the north (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur), 25 to 33°C (77–91°F) in the center and south (Goa, Mumbai, Kelara)

It begins to heat up in April, but it is still pleasant enough for outdoor activities in popular destinations. The rainy season hasn't come and animals become more conspicuous looking for food, which makes it a good time for safaris in national parks . To avoid the heat, you can plan activities for early mornings and evenings and enjoy pool time and a nap at noon.

April is not a high season for travel in India . Popular tourist sites such as the Taj Mahal will not be as packed. It will give you more of a chance to leisurely explore the sites and get some great photos without huge crowds in your shots.

There might be a peak period around Sunday , April 9th in 2023 for the Easter break . Book an Easter trip to India at least 3 months ahead for more affordable prices.

Visit India in May: Hottest Month

Average temperature ranges : 26 to 42°C (79–108°F) in north India (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur), 26 to 34°C (77–93°F) in its center and south (Goa, Mumbai, Kelara)

With May comes the hottest month in India . In the Golden Triangle area (Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur), temperatures reach 45°C (113°F) on some days. Mumbai and Goa in central India and Kerala in south India have comparatively cooler weather. From the end of May, the southwest monsoon from the Indian Ocean starts to bring some rain to southern parts of India.

Visiting India in June: Start of the Rainy Season

Average temperature ranges : 28 to 39°C (82–102°F) in the north (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur), 25 to 34°C (77–93°F) in central and south India (Goa, Mumbai, Kelara)
Key festivals : There are no major festivals in June. Some villages hold celebrations for the coming of the rain, which is essential for their harvests.

After the hot season, India experiences monsoon weather that lasts from June to September across most of the country. Heavy downpours are seen nearly every day in June in the south and middle of India (Kerala, Goa, Mumbai, etc.). As the monsoon starts from the south and spreads north gradually, Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur may still get some sunny, dry days in early June .

Ladakh in the far north welcomes its best season . It is nearly unaffected by the monsoon. It's great to relax there, while taking in mountain views, hiking, or exploring Buddhist monasteries, as it starts to get nicely warm from June.

Visiting India in July: Rainy, but Less hot

India gets cooler in July. Although the likelihood of heavy rain means it is not a good time to visit some areas of India, certain cities in North India have dry and cool weather, making them the perfect places to visit. Leh in Ladakh is especially beautiful in July . The Rajastan area in west India, including Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer, gets much less rain as well .

If you travel in July, you will meet less crowding as most domestic family groups will have gone back home when India's summer vacation ends (usually lasting from mid-April to mid-June). In order to attract more clients in the low travel season, promotions from hotels and flights are still common .

Visiting India in August: Wettest in the North

Average temperature ranges : 25 to 34°C (77–93°F) in north India (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur), 24 to 30°C (75–86°F) in central and south India (Goa, Mumbai, Kelara)

August is usually the wettest month in cities in north India, such as Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. In contrast to them, cities in middle and south India, like Mumbai and Goa, get less rain than in August.

The unstable sea currents mean Goa is still not a safe destination for swimming and sea sports .

Visiting Rajasthan in west India, you will meet less rain.

Because of high river levels, August is a good time to take a Ganges River cruise between Varanasi and Patna.

August will be the last good month to travel to Leh in Ladakh as the mountain routes will start to be snow-blocked from September until April.

Visiting India in September: End of the Rainy Season

Average temperature ranges : 24 to 34°C (75–93°F) in the north (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur), 24 to 30°C (75–86°F) in central and southern India (Goa, Mumbai, Kelara)

September is the last month of the rainy season in India . Although the northeast monsoon will bring some rain to south India in November and December, especially the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala, this rain is much less heavy than from June to September.

Beach resorts start to reopen in September with the easing of the rains . The Himalayan trekking routes are dry enough for you to come, and the trekking high season lasts from September until November.

Most hotels still haven't raised their prices (fully). Less crowds, less rain, and low prices are the rewards for traveling in September .

Visiting India in October: Sunny Days and Cool Evenings

October is a month of transition from the rainy season to the cool season. Because of this, October's weather is very pleasant with sunny days and cool evenings . There are still some rainy days in south India, but only showers that don't affect travel much.

As there is little rain and tour prices are not as high as in peak times starting from December, traveling in October is a great time if you're looking for an affordable price and sunny but not very hot days .

The biggest festival in India, Diwali , is celebrated in the latter part of October or early November. The whole country will be immersed in the festival atmosphere of lights and candles.

Our guide lele is a wealth of information, Lele is very professional and very attentive to our needs. Lele is amazing. Lele got everything spot on. In February, the winter chill is still in the air, and every place from the deserts of Rajasthan to the Mughal architecture of North India seems inviting. Add Valentine’s Day (14 February) to the mix, and you’ve got yourself all the right reasons to plan a vacation . There’s also ample to make you fall a little more in love with India this month, from the Kodaikanal’s deep forests to new year celebrations in Sikkim. Here are the 10 best places you can visit:

The Taj Mahal

There couldn’t be a better time to experience the splendour of the Taj. The cool weather and the clement sun allow you to spend hours admiring its beauty during the day. And if you plan a night visit, you can catch the moonlight romancing the fine marble work in the quiet of the night. When in Agra, also catch a glimpse of lesser-known monuments such as Kanch Mahal, Sikandra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.

In a city of extremes, the perfectly comfortable weather of February becomes more than welcome. Spend your afternoons sunbathing in the sprawling parks of Delhi —visit Lodhi Garden, walk through Sunder Nursery and book a visit to Amrit Udyan covered in fresh blooms. Take a walk down history with a guided tour of the city’s many monuments. The romance of Kalimpong is best discovered on foot. This Valentine’s Day , visit this quaint town near Darjeeling with your other half. Escape into the old-world charm of British-era architecture, get lost in groves of pine trees and discover the stories behind a century-old church. Jodhpur, Rajasthan

A city laden with history and heritage, Jodhpur dons a new layer of culture every February, for it’s the month of the Sacred Spirit Festival ( 10-12 February ). After a two-year hiatus, the festival will once again welcome musicians from around the world at Mehrangarh Fort to celebrate the soulful music traditions. This year, catch renditions of classical instruments such as the mohan veena, cristal baschet, mridangam and the Carnatic violin. Tour the fort while you’re there, and take an hour-long drive to visit Osian, a forgotten town with ruins of ancient Hindu and Jain temples dating back to the 8th century.

Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

For three days in February, Jaisalmer Desert Festival ( 3-5 February ) takes over the ochre dunes of the Thar desert . Handicrafts stalls, art installations and contemporary music colour the landscape with local culture. It’s also the time when residents of the city open their doors to tourists interested in tasting local fare. The desert city is also a great location for night safaris, and there’s ample to see around town from havelis and forts to temples.

Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh

About 15 cheetahs are being transported from South Africa to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh.

Cheetah safari to soon begin at Kuno National Park

In September, Namibia's Cheetah Conservation Fund delivered eight cheetahs to India, which have roamed in Kuno National Park’s predator-free enclosure since then. In February , the park is expected to launch cheetah safaris after releasing them into the wild. This will not only shed a spotlight on the lesser-known Kuno National Park but also boost wildlife tourism in India. Even apart from this, the park is a rich habitat for wildlife such as leopards, striped hyenas, chinkara, blackbucks and boars, and winter migrants like the black stork, white-breasted waterhen, Indian pitta, and great egret.

Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu

With so much to soak in, from pristine waters to sky islands, a trip to Kodaikanal is for the senses. Hike up the hill station to immerse yourself in views of the valley from its various vantage points. With the winter yet to recede, you can smell the fog and pine in the air. The surroundings echo with birdsong floating from deep within the shola forests. You can also visit the Kodaikanal Lake, the Kurinji Temple dedicated to locally worshipped lord Murugan and Vattakanal Falls.

Coorg, Karnataka

A trip to Coorg resonates with coffee aroma and deep green plantations. But in the mild weather of spring, the scenery becomes dotted with white coffee flowers as they begin to bloom for the season . You can also go around spotting fresh blooms in the wild, or visit Raja’s Seat for a curated show with 12,000 plants, floral decorations and a bonsai exhibition.

Bengaluru, Karnataka

Art will have a new residence in Bengaluru from this month, as the Museum of Art and Photography is set to open doors on 18 February. Be the first to catch the exhibition of woven textiles in clothing, photographs and paintings; Jangarh Singh Shyam’s artworks; and permanent collections featuring works from the likes of Jamini Roy and photojournalist Ami Vitale. Out on the streets, pink trumpets colour the canvas a natural pink. Take a walk down Cubbon Park with blossoms at your feet and savour the crisp February weather of the city.

Saumya Roy, a Mumbai-based author, has written a book about the city’s wealth, poverty and the waste pickers who make their living in its landfill.

Mumbai appears as much a dream as a city. Sprinkled with the stardust of Bollywood, the Hindi-language film industry that bases itself here, and studded with billionaires , India’s hyperkinetic metropolis, known as Bombay until 1995, feels like a place where anything is possible. But over the years, the city’s reality has been one of crumbling infrastructure, unmoving traffic and unending slums. Amid tight pandemic lockdowns, Mumbai turned into one of the world’s great construction sites , trying to remake itself with new towers, subway lines and bridges . Take in the dizzying juxtapositions — while discovering experimental performances in former textile mills and serene, ancient caves a short drive from the urban chaos — in a city guaranteed to look different again the next time you visit.

The Taj Mahal Palace , an ornate hotel open since 1903, looks over the Arabian Sea and the historic Gateway of India arch. A memorial in the lobby commemorates the terror attack at the hotel in 2008. Rooms start at 23,550 rupees, or about $282.
Sea Green Hotel , on the curved, lit-up shoreline called the Queen’s Necklace, has basic rooms with gorgeous bay views. Rooms start at around 9,000 rupees.
The Grand Hotel is a century-old establishment in the city’s historic Ballard Estate district, an area that is also home to one of Mumbai’s best-known Parsi restaurants, Britannia & Co. You can also walk to many of the city’s well-known attractions. Rooms start at around 6,850 rupees.
Traveling in Mumbai’s packed trains is fast, efficient and an experience like no other. Millions travel on the local trains every year, and vendors and singers walk through compartments (25 rupees for a first-class single ticket). Black-and-yellow cabs , which use meters with fixed rates, and ride-hailing apps like Uber are readily available. Mumbai’s red buses also offer a breezy, scenic and cheap way to get around the city (from 5 rupees per trip).

See spindly chimneys rising amid luxury hotels and condos in the jagged skyline of Lower Parel, a rapidly gentrifying precinct in central Mumbai. The chimneys are relics of the area’s former textile mills, which began slowly being redeveloped into malls after a worker strike in the 1980s. Trace Mumbai’s working-class roots here with the writer Saranya Subramanian, who leads the Bombay Poetry Crawl (600 rupees, or about $7), a series of walking tours conducted through the lens of poetry and local history. During the tour, Ms. Subramanian reads poetry by workers and encourages participants to read, too. Take a car to Byculla, the chaotic old quarter of Mumbai. Get a coffee (Americano, 228 rupees) at the Craftery by Subko , a new Mumbai cafe and roastery chain bringing hipsters to this part of the city. Then drive through the busy, narrow streets to see some of Mumbai’s diverse and beautiful religious monuments. Visit the nearby Moghal Masjid , a jewel-like, Iranian-style Shiite mosque built in 1860, with intricate blue tiling adorning a curved entrance. Women cannot pray inside the mosque but can enter the compound, which has a pool for ablution. Take in the facade of Hasnabad Dargah , a pristine, ivory-colored mausoleum, known as Mumbai’s Taj Mahal for its resemblance to the original (entry only for Shia Ismaili Muslims). Not far from there is the Magen David Synagogue (entry, 300 rupees), recognizable by its sky blue clock tower, built in the 1860s to serve Mumbai’s once wealthy and influential, but now vanishing , Jewish community.

With a tree-lined plunge pool and glowing figurines carved into giant pillars, it can feel more like a theme park than a restaurant (it often attracts Bollywood celebrities). It’s worth a cocktail (1,295 rupees) just to take in the sweeping views of the bay.

From inside the park, minivans drive visitors about 10 minutes through the forest (1,000 rupees round-trip) to the bottom of a hill. From there, walk up to the Kanheri Caves, a Buddhist complex of more than 100 caves, the oldest dating back 2,000 years, carved into basalt. Some form large, pillared prayer halls, while others feature carved serene Buddhist deities in prayer. On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality .

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT.

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT.

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT. In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017.

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT.

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET.

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com .

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.

A total solar eclipse is expected to pass through the United States on April 8, 2024, giving stargazers across the country the opportunity to view the celestial phenomenon in which the sun is completely covered by the moon.

The eclipse will enter the U.S. in Texas and exit in Maine. It is the last time a total solar eclipse will be visible in the contiguous United States until 2044.

Where can you see the total solar eclipse?

The eclipse will cross through North America, passing over parts of Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

The eclipse will enter the United States in Texas, and travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse.

Much of the eclipse's visibility depends on the weather. A cloudy day could prevent visitors from seeing the spectacle altogether.

When does the solar eclipse start and end?

The solar eclipse will begin in Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT. It will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT.

The longest duration of totality—which is when the moon completely covers the sun — will be 4 minutes, 28 seconds, near Torreón, Mexico. Most places along the path of totality will see a totality duration between 3.5 and 4 minutes.

Where’s the best place to see the total solar eclipse?

The best place to witness the event is along the path of totality. Thirteen states will be along the path of totality, and many towns across the country are preparing for the deluge of visitors— planning eclipse watch parties and events in the days leading up to totality.

In Rochester, NY, the Rochester Museum and Science Center is hosting a multi-day festival that includes a range of events and activities. Russellville, Arkansas will host an event with activities including live music, science presentations, tethered hot-air balloon rides, and telescope viewings.
