Cantabria. \"The Green Spain\" 5 Nights Tour

Cantabria. "The Green Spain" 5 Nights

This tour far exceeded my expectations! The company, IberoCycle, went above and beyond to make my experience memorable and enjoyable. They picked me up from my hotel in Bilbao, gave me a choice of cycles previously prepared for me, and an excellent introduction to the tour materials and resources available to me. I was provided with a whole packet of maps, information on local attractions, and various cycle routes. The hotels booked by the company were clean, conveniently located, and added much to the joy of the trip.

We did this trip with some friends and it was a wonderful experience. We really enjoyed the electric bikes, they are a lot of fun and give you a great help when you need it. We followed the route that Santi made for us. The environment is beautiful, the natural park of Sierra Calderona is spectacular. They have everything very organized and they are very nice. All we had to do was pedal, eat and enjoy! A highly recommended experience

Self-Guided Cycling in Andalucia: Seville to Cadiz Tour

Self-Guided Cycling in Andalucia: Seville to Cadiz

Very well organised tour. The route notes were extremely detailed and helpful as the route was quite complicated some days - presumably to avoid busy roads. However the country wasn’t good for enjoyable cycling, being treeless and agricultural, and apart from the White Villages I really only enjoyed the scenery on the third day from Montellano to Arcos when the route went through the hills and along the river on a good Via Verde. On the last day getting out of Jerez took an hour then soon after it was semi-industrial wasteland. The Via Verde between Seville and Carmona was in terrible condition with deep ruts and sand. I was also unlucky to get a flat- the seal at the tube valve failed- and I had terrible trouble changing the tube- the plastics levers not strong enough and the pump nozzle completely stuck. I left a note to the bike hire.

Cycle Southern Spain - Murcia

This was a tour averaging about 40k per day with few hills so there was lots of time for sightseeing and relaxing. We spent most of our time in small towns with few tourists which meant that food and wine was generally excellent value. The riding was pleasant on mostly quiet roads with few traffic issues.

Cycling the Camino de Santiago - Roncesvalles to Santiago Tour

Cycling the Camino de Santiago - Roncesvalles to Santiago

We have just completed cycling the Camino de Santiago (Roncesvalles to Santiago) with "ExperiencePlus!" bike tours. It was truly memorable experience. Our guides brought a myriad of talents, language skills and good humour to our trip. The "plus" was, in large part, the cultural component. Thanks to the knowledge of our guides and their eagerness to share their love of the Camino, we gained an appreciation of the history of the route and the pilgrims (past and present) who have made the journey. On a practical note, the accommodation was the best available - keeping in mind that this is a 'pilgrim's route. This comment is not meant as a negative . All of the accommodation provided a welcome respite after a long day of cycling. The food and wine (chosen by our guides) were wonderful and a provided delightful introduction to the cuisine of northern Spain. On a more practical note, the bicycles and van support (including water and snacks en route) were excellent. The guides went "above and beyond" to ensure that we had no difficulty in moving forward! The "chalk arrows" were an added bonus - all we had to do was concentrate on cycling and the breathtaking scenery. This was our sixth trip with ExperiencePlus!. We are looking forward to our seventh.

Andalucia Cycling: Seville to Córdoba in 7 days Tour

Andalucia Cycling: Seville to Córdoba in 7 days

Absolutely Amazing. A wet spring provided for an abundance of wild flowers and beautiful green hills. This area of Spain is hilly, so if you like hills… this is a great trip. If you don’t, no worries, get an e-bike. The history and culture of this area is very interesting and Experience Plus does a very good job of weaving cultural experience into your riding tour.

Spain bike tours.

Spain is the second most toured country in the world. This country is known for miles of beautiful Mediterranean coastline ranging from the rocky Costa Brava to the white sand of Costa Blanca.

Cycling is an uncomplicated, convenient way to tour Spain’s unique history, with countless monuments, ruins, castles and cathedrals. Spain boasts the second most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world.

Find a diverse landscape with miles of dedicated bike paths and minimal traffic. Cycling conditions are optimal for bike touring, with warm, sunny weather and easily understood signage. Spain is also home to the famous Camino de Santiago walking path, perfect for cycle touring.

“The villages were full of nice people, historical castles and churches. I enjoyed the towns by the Mediterranean Sea and going to the beaches. I liked the narrow old streets lined with little shops and walking the wall built around the city.”

Cycling In Spain: The 7 Most Incredible Routes for Bike Touring

  • Updated on: May 26, 2021

This article may contain affiliate.  For more information, please see our disclaimer  here.

Table of Contents

As a pair of Dutch girls, I guess we can say that cycling is more or less in our blood! Our adventures have taken us around the world, and more often than not, we’ve enjoyed the sights from the saddle of our trusty bicycles. However, I’ve got to say that bike touring in Spain for a month was one of my favorite bicycle trips of all time!

Cycling in Spain is perhaps the best way to see this incredible country. The sleepy, rustic villages shouldn’t be rushed through, and riding through the beautiful sunshine through the awesome scenery is pure joy! There are a number of official bicycle tours in Spain, with well-signed routes traveling along mostly vehicle-free tracks.

Plus, the weather is almost always gorgeous, with long sunny days well into autumn. It’d be amazing to do a full bike tour of Spain if time allowed, and it’s something we’ve dreamed of! But, for something a little more manageable, the following 7 bike touring routes in Spain are absolutely spectacular.

So, saddle up and let’s find out more!

1. Ruta De La Plata (The Silver Route)

Cycling in Spain through the historical town of Sevilla

  • Total distance: 936 km (582 miles)
  • Total elevation: 20,954 m (68,750 ft)

Also known as the Way of St. James, this is an astounding route for soaking up both sunshine and a little Spanish history. Passing through breathtaking scenery, the route travels south to north, through western Spain, from Seville up to Gijón on the Bay of Biscay. It follows one of the oldest Roman trade routes in the country, taking in a number of charming, historic towns and villages.

Along the way, there are countless opportunities to spend a day out of the saddle, exploring ancient ruins, castles, churches, and amphitheaters. The route follows cycle paths for much of the way and, for the most part, avoids busy roads entirely. Passing through calm, rolling countryside with some climbing along the way, you don’t have to be super fit to complete the route. However, you’ll probably enjoy it more if you’ve done a little training in advance.

With plenty of charming cities and towns to stop off at along the way, you can really take your time with this route. It can normally be completed within 9 days of around 100 km (60 miles) each, though it’s easy to break it down or speed it up. There’s a slightly different version of this trail, which converts it into a pilgrim’s route leading to Santiago rather than Gijón.

2. Camino de Santiago

Camino de Santiago start

  • Total distance: 361km (225 miles)
  • Total elevation: 6,337 m (20,800 ft)

This classic pilgrim’s route is among the oldest cycling routes in Spain . Crossing the north of the country from east to west, the route starts in the beautifully Gothic León. From this stunning start point, the route winds through unspoiled countryside, taking in villages, farms, and medieval monasteries, before culminating in the legendary Santiago.

Along the way you’ll follow the iconic seashell signs as they direct you through a mixed terrain of quiet minor roads, designated cycle routes, and the occasional off-road section. The rural countryside is pretty hilly, and you’ll need a fair level of fitness to enjoy it to the max. However, it’s possible to complete the trip in 6 moderate days, averaging around 54 km (33.5 miles).

The scenery along the route is as magnificent as it is varied, taking in grassy plains, woody mountains, lush green valleys, and rolling farmlands. There are also plenty of opportunities to explore the local area and enjoy the delicacies of the region, from tasty wines to moreish local cheeses.

3. Mallorca Coast to Coast

mallorca coast biketouring

  • Total distance: 100 km (147 miles)
  • Total elevation: 1,580 m (5,183 ft)

Mallorca is a stunningly beautiful island to go cycling in Spain and perhaps best known for its luxurious sandy beaches. However, there’s much more to discover on this Paradise Island, and this cycling route takes in all of the best sights. It offers a wonderful mix of coastal areas and the inland foothills of the Tramuntana mountains.

With tons of amazing family-run hotels and guesthouses on the island, it’s easy to adapt the route to your preference, with a fantastic place to stop each night. Most of the going is flat, on quiet, tarmac routes, with the occasional off-road sections. But take care on the couple of steep climbs you pass. Most days you can enjoy around 40 km (25 miles) of leisurely cycling, with plenty of time to enjoy the sights.

The route typically starts from the airport and ends in the beautiful cap Formenta. In between, you’ll visit sleepy rural villages, tranquil beaches, and cycle through unspoiled countryside. Mountain views abound, even though there are no real climbs on this route.

Tour Recommendation For a Day on the Bike on Mallorca:

4. the way of el cid.

The Way of El Cid start biketouring

  • Total distance: 1,100 km (685 miles)
  • Total elevation: 18,740 m (61,480 ft)

You’ll be cycling in the footsteps of legends on this incredible Spanish cycle route. Rodrigo Diaz, or El Cid, was a medieval knight in the 11th century, and remains a national hero. This cycle route follows his epic journey from Burgos to Valencia, crossing through an amazingly varied landscape.

Along the way you’ll ride through quaint, medieval villages, unspoiled countryside, mountains and valleys, and conquer hilltop fortresses. The main route takes in 1,100 km (685 miles), but there are a number of interesting side routes that are worth considering if you have time. These circular routes take in various additional historic sights and majestic landscapes, and increase the total route to around 2,000 km (1,245 miles).

Valencia coast

There are actually 2 different routes you can take; the paved route, or the mountain bike route. Both are well signed, and avoid busy roads for the most part. Mostly the going is easy to moderate, with the occasional climb. There are plenty of places to stop along the way, and you can split the journey up as it suits you, with 5 to 6 days being the average time taken.

5. Vía Verde (de la Sierra)

Cycling in Spain Vía Verde de la Sierra Spain Biking

  • Total distance: 36.5 km (23 miles)
  • Total elevation gain: 1,261m (4,135 ft)

Roughly translated to ‘green lanes’, the Vias Verdes stretch for more than 2,200 km in total, all across Spain. After countless failed railway projects, the old tracks were converted into 120 of these impressive routes. They’re well signed, mostly flat, and easily accessible for everyone from hikers and cyclists, to horse riders and even wheelchair users.

When cycling in Spain, they’re a fantastic place to meet fellow travelers, and offer up incredible scenery that takes in everything Spain has to offer. From medieval cities to humble rural villages, through mountain passes to lush green valleys, the green lanes guarantee an incredible adventure.

One of the best routes for cyclists is the Vía Verde de la Sierra from Olvera to Serrano. This fairly easy-going 36.5 km (23 mile) trail takes in 30 tunnels, 4 incredible viaducts, and various medieval villages. The route from Olvera is mostly flat or downhill, making it an easy trail for beginners.

6. Col de Puymorens

Col de Puymorens nature Spain biking

  • Total distance: 176 km (109 miles)
  • Total elevation: 4,144 m (13,595 ft)

This breathtaking looped route takes you on an adventure through the glorious Pyrenees. Winding through the gorgeous Catalonian landscape, you’ll dip briefly into France, before returning to the small Catolonian villages and towns. It’s possible to cycle on paved roads, as well as mountain bike tracks, but both are largely free of motorized traffic.

As such, it’s a peaceful and enjoyable route to cycle, and while there are inclines, there’s nothing too hard going. For the most part, the route is fairly moderate and anyone with a pretty good level of fitness should be okay.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy a wealth of charming towns and villages, and for foodies, incredible cuisine and wine (there are 18 Michelin Star restaurants in the region). The route is well-signed and open throughout the year, though spring and autumn are the best times to visit. There are also plenty of opportunities to leave the official route and explore the surroundings.

7. The Tour of Andalusia Route

Gibraltar Biking Spain

  • Total distance: 267 km (166 miles)
  • Total elevation: 6,733 m (22,089 ft)

This route is fantastic for cycling in Spain and gives you the opportunity to see the treasures of Andalusia in the south of Spain. An area famed for sandy beaches, desert landscapes, gorgeous towns, and awe-inspiring sierras. The route starts in the small town of Malaga, a cultural crossroads and the southernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula. After exploring Andalusia’s inland gems, you’ll return to the coast, with the route ending in another country: Gibraltar.

Along the way you’ll enjoy breathtaking scenery at almost every turn. Highlights include Ronda, an absolutely stunning mountaintop town, and epic national parks including Sierra de Grazalema. There are plenty of places to stop along the way, and incredible food and drink to enjoy.

The route is quite hard-going at times, with long, steep climbs. A good level of fitness is recommended to enjoy it to the fullest. However, it’s worth the effort, and the rewards are absolutely incredible!

Traveling in Spain

Cycling Tour Spain | 6 Guided & Self-Guided Bicycle Spain Tours

Matt

We all know Spain for its ever-sunny, sandy beaches. But a cyclist-in-the-know would tell you that Spain is the perfect playground for pro-cyclists and holiday-goers alike. With its (seriously) diverse terrains, Spain has a road – and a route – for everyone.

From culture-rich cycling tours through Spain’s oldest cities to adrenaline-filled mountain biking trails and everything in between, Spain’s got it. We’ve rounded up the top biking tours in Spain for your next Spanish cycling holiday.

Best Time of Year For a Spain Bicycle Tour

The best time of year to travel across Spain by bike would be during the sunny spring months (March to June) when temperatures are mild and flowers paint the Spanish landscape.

Summer in Spain can become quite hot and dry – making for a possible, but not very pleasant ride. If this is the only time you have, we’d recommend planning your Spanish bike tour for the beginning or end of summer (June and September) as mid-summer temperatures often exceed 35℃ (95℉) in some regions.

Temperatures can drop drastically during the winter months (December – March), and snow forms a blanket over the Spanish mountains. Northern Spain experiences the most snow, so you may still be able to squeeze in a cycling trip in the south of Spain if you can’t wait out the cycling itch.

Have a look at our Spain packing guide so you can come prepared and stay prepared for whatever the Spanish weather may send your way.

Cycling Rules in Spain

Cycling in Spain has increased in popularity in recent years, which has led to the Spanish Traffic Authority becoming more serious about bike-riding rules. It’s essential that you stick to the Spanish cycling rules during your tour — failure to do so may result in a fine.

Cyclist in Colombres

Over hills and almost flat country roads you cycle past the coast ranges of El Cuera and El Sueve in the shadow of the impressive peaks of the  Picos de Europa . Passing tiny coves and charming coastal villages, you ride from  Cantabria  into  Asturias . Some of your routes follow sections of the Pilgrims’ Route to Santiago de Compostela so you will find ruins and Romanesque chapels along the way.

Saint James shell

Our itinerary follows this authentic route, which was very popular in the early Middle Ages when pilgrims tried to avoid the constant conflict between Christian and Moorish kingdoms in Central Spain. In this pilgrimage you cycle along the ‘ Green Spain ’, going through varied lanscapes of   Asturias   and   Galicia.

Mallorca lanscape

Brimming with contrasts, Mallorca truly runs the gamut. Gentle hills roll toward seaside cliffs, Mediterranean forests give way to pristine coves and a massive limestone range looms to the west. Embrace this inspiring scenery on easy country routes and more challenging climbs and revel in the island’s heritage, hospitality and cuisine.

Cyclist andalucia

This cycling tour also called ' Ruta de los Olivos ' goes along paths and tranquil roads traversing a sea of olive trees and Mediterranean woods. This less-known area in the North of  Malaga  still preserves most of its enchanting white washed villages, scattered along the slopes of the Sierra Subbética slopes.

What to Bring?

Biking Outside Barcelona

With a host of highly-rated tour operators in town, balmy weather and an extensive network of bike paths, exploring Barcelona on two wheels is a LOT of fun ! Here’s everything you need to know to get pedalling…

Why Explore by Bicycle?

A bike tour is a great way to see Barcelona, and has numerous advantages over  traditional walking tours . The most obvious is that being on a bicycle enables you to see much more of the city, but those of you who like a little exercise will also appreciate the chance to burn off a couple more calories and keep the oxygen flowing to the brain as your knowledgeable guide regales you with fascinating histories and amusing anecdotes.

The chance to rattle around Barcelona on two wheels will also make you feel a little more independent (and dare we say ‘cool’) than those who’ve hopped on the nearest tourist bus

The chance to rattle around Barcelona on two wheels will also make you feel a little more independent (and dare we say ‘cool’) than those who’ve hopped on the nearest tourist bus – and you can even maintain the moral high ground on environmental friendliness. There’s no carbon emissions generated from pedal power.

The fact that Barcelona is (with the exception of  the odd mountain ) an incredibly flat city with over 300km of bike paths (and more planned) should provide additional incentive to get in the saddle and discover the town’s best attractions .

8 Advantages of Exploring by Bike

  • Barcelona’s warm & dry weather is perfect for biking
  • It’s not strenuous, but still a good work out
  • You can fit in many more sights than on a walking tour…
  • But you are more independent than on a bus / coach tour!
  • Barcelona has 300km+ of cycling paths and many car-free zones
  • The centre of the city is mostly flat (and the hilly tours you can do on an Electric Bicycle!)
  • It’s an environmentally friendly way of seeing the city
  • Bicycle tours tend to be very affordable !

Most of Barcelona’s numerous bike tour companies offer both private tours and group excursions with a guide. As well as catch-all routes that take in the likes of  La Sagrada Familia ,  Barceloneta Beach  and  La Rambla  in one circuit, you’ll also find some exciting alternative tours on offer, concentrating on different themes (like  eating tapas  or football) or taking you to less-heralded, but equally fascinating, districts.

1. Steel Donkey Bike Tours

Looking for a two-wheel ride you will never forget? The Steel Donkey team (the donkey is the national animal of Catalonia in case you were wondering!) offer intimate adventures around the city of Barcelona, riding in small groups of no more than 8 people. Their friendly guides are all Barna locals, with an eye for the fascinating details and stories that others might miss, and a nose for adventure. You won’t get a history lesson on Gaudi, but you might learn a little bit about Catalan independence and see sides of the city that most tourists simply don’t know about, as you spend a unique afternoon uncovering Barcelona’s secrets. There is no fixed itinerary (each guide shows you their personal Barcelona highlights!), but hidden squares, city beaches, side streets, chocolate and  churros , flea markets and forgotten cemeteries are just a few delights you might experience. A simply great tour for people who don’t like to be tourists. So there you have it… plenty of great options to choose from, and no excuses to not get in the saddle. And while you don’t have to be Sir Bradley Wiggins to take a bike tour (my mum has joined me on a couple of the above!), and many tours support young children, basic cycling competence is required. In other words, if you’ve never ridden a bike before, check out our guide to the best walking tours instead!

For a little more on what to bring, plus a couple of suggestion for cycling tours that take you out of the city, keep reading…

What Should I Bring?

Nothing too bad will happen if you rock up to a bicycle tour with just the shirt on your back (and some shorts hopefully), but this is what a boy scout would bring, in order to be totally prepared for a few hours in the saddle:

  • Sunscreen. Be sure to apply plenty to the back of neck, forearms and face.
  • Sunglasses. The light in Barcelona can be oh so bright… you’ll get a headache if you forget these.
  • Sensible footwear. Flip flops on bikes are rarely a good idea.
  • Bottle of water. You’re going to need to rehydrate, possibly quite regularly if it’s scorchio outside.
  • Second layer. Check the weather forecast before you set off, as you might appreciate having a light rain jacket, or sweater, for those times when the legendary local climate lets us down.
  • Camera. Probably best not to pack your DSLR… too clunky and not great way to carry it on a bike. But you’ll want to have a camera of some sort handy for when you stop outside one of Gaudi’s masterpieces, a cool piece of street art or are cruising back to the city via the beach. Your phone or a point of shoot should prove perfect.
  • Address of the tour meeting point. Because there’s always one who doesn’t…
  • Cash. Some pocket change for snacks and souvenirs (some tours stop via cool stores) might come in handy.
  • Backpack. I’d recommend a double shoulder strapped bag as these are much more stable when you’re riding a bike.
  • Lip balm. The Barcelona Life team have very sensitive lips, ok!?

Is Barcelona good for biking?

Barcelona is the perfect city for cycling, as the weather is warm and dry most of the time, the centre of the city is totally flat, and there are over 300 kms of dedicated bike paths.

Which are the best bike tour companies operating in Barcelona?

Steel Donkey Bike Tours are perhaps the best local Barcelona tour operator, while international companies like Baja Bikes and Fat Tires also have a strong presence in the city. Lovers of architecture might look at Gaudi Bike Tours.

Does Barcelona have a public bike sharing system?

Yes, Barcelona launched a city bike share scheme called Bicing in 2007. As of 2022, there are over 500 Bicing stations. Unfortunately it is NOT available for tourists to use, as you need to be city resident to obtain a Bicing card.

Do I need to wear a helmet when cycling in Barcelona?

By law you are not required to wear a helmet when cycling within the city limits. Naturally, if you don't know the local roads and traffic rules, it can make sense to use one. Most bike rental and tour companies will be able to offer you one for free when you use their services.

More Local Tips!

Confession time! I’ve been blogging about Barcelona since way back in 2009… in other words, apart from quite a few more grey hair since arriving in the city, I’ve got plenty more great advice for you, whether you want to work out which Gaudi buildings to visit , what is the best day trip to go on , or which is the best value Barcelona Card . I am blind and we require a tandem bike to rent. Are there Tandem bikes available to rent?

bicycle tour in spain

Hi Teresa, yes it looks like several bike rental firms have them. Just doing a Google now for you and it seems Happy Rental Bike have them for example: https://happyrentalbike.com/barcelona/tandem-bike-rental/

' src=

Could you recommend a route if we wanted to do a free-wheel bike tour of these places? And are there places to lock your bikes if we want to go inside somewhere?

One advantage of a bike tour is the guide usually knows the best bike paths etc. to get around, but it is also fun to go free-wheeling. Specific routes I don’t have saved, but I’d try to get out of the Old Town that is bit too crowded with pedestrians to be comfortable for bikes. Poblenou is nice for cycling, although there are fewer obvious sights to see. Eixample is good if you stick to the bike paths and avoid the traffic.

Just found your site- we arrive soon and will be back on line with you after we land! Love the bike tour recommendations – Boston and Amsterdam were epic on 2 wheels – can’t wait to Bike Barna. And, true confession, as we will be in town for St. Pats- the Irish Bar web search got me to your site. Hasta Luego!

Where to go for the best cycling in Spain? Our pick of 9 of the best regions

Spain is a big country (twice the size of the United Kingdom!). There are so many fantastic places to cycle, it can be something of a challenge when it comes to choosing exactly where to go to find the best cycling in Spain.

With budget airlines offering regular routes from a host of UK airports and with flight times of around two and a half hours, there is no wonder that tens of thousands of cyclists flock to Spain and its islands each year to ride in the sun and escape the vagaries of northern Europe’s weather.

From the long climbs of the Sierra Nevada, to the rolling terrain of Mallorca and the short sharp inclines around San Sebastián, this is a country that really does have it all for the avid road cyclist.

To help you choose between all the wonderful places you could visit, we have put together this guide which we hope will help you find the very best places to cycle in Spain.

This article includes details of services that we have used ourselves or which we would consider using. Some are paid adverts. Please read our disclosure policy for further information.

Ikos Andalusia

Website  // +34 951 02 90 00

Ikos Andalusia is part of the award-winning Ikos Resorts collection (in the last six years, five resorts within the collection have been voted number 1 in the Top All-Inclusive Resorts in the World category in Trip Advisor Traveller’s Choice Awards). In 2024 the resort launches a new vision of Unconditional Luxury, with elegant new accomodation including sun-kissed terraces in stylish penthouse suites, sparkling private pools and serene four-bedroom villas.

Best cycling southern Spain

Southern Spain is synonymous with sunshine and from January to March a host of professional cycling teams base themselves in the south east corner of the country for their early season training camps.

The most popular venue is Calpe which, as a tourist town, has a plentiful supply of hotels and restaurants and can offer rolling terrain and some intermediate length climbs.

Further to the west, in Andalucía, you will find the super smooth and virtually traffic-free roads of the Costa Almeria complete with some longer climbs.

For those who want to train at altitude and test their legs on some monster climbs there is the Sierra Nevada.

Read on for more detail!

1. Costa Almeria

Cyclist on looping road in Almeria

Sitting between the provinces of Granada and Murcia, the Almeria region is not that well known to those outside Spain. It is a relatively quiet area and, other than its seaside resorts, is quite barren and remote in places.

As well as being one of the largest fruit and vegetable producers in the world, it also boasts the only true desert in mainland Europe where some of the old spaghetti westerns were filmed.

It is a perfect base for cycling in Spain in the winter, as the average temperatures only drop to around 16-22 degrees and a wide range of coastal hotels offer very competitive prices during their off season. It is increasingly becoming a great value for money option for cyclists seeking winter sun.

The gran fondo Costa Almeria, held every May in Mójacar, is quickly earning a reputation as being one of the ‘go to’ events on the Spanish sportive calendar. Its long route is over 185 kilometres and it has 3,700 metres of elevation gain, making it a real test for any cyclist.

Further inland the Sierra de los Filabres mountains are home to two epic Vuelta a España climbs the Especial climb to the Calar Alto observatory and the sinuous ascent of Alto de Velefique.

Find out more:

Check out our guide to cycling in Almeria , which includes guides to the Calar Alto observatory and the Alto de Velefique .

Also worth considering is the Costa Tropical: just 130km southwest of Almeria, you come to Almuñécar and the lesser known Costa Tropical. Surrounded by the mountains of the Sierra Nevada, the Costa Tropical is worth a look. We’ve heard that many cycling teams choose Almuñécar area for pre-season training camp. With few crowds or traffic and with lots of climbs and mild winters, this is another place to know about in Andalusia.

Rooftop patio at Vuelta a Costa Tropical cycling accommodation in Andalucia

Vuelta a Costa Tropical is based in the town of Almuñécar, an attractive, medieval town on the Costa Tropical, near Malaga and Granada.

Run by passionate cyclist, Matthieu, the house offers accommodation for six, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. You’ll find a cosy living-room, new kitchen and an internal courtyard, which makes great secure, internal bike storage. One of guests’ favourite features is the huge rooftop terrace that provides views over the mountains and sea; the perfect place for a post-ride barbecue.

The house is also well located, just 300m from the beach and walking distance to shops and well-priced bars and restaurants.

Cyclists will be pleased to find the house is equipped with bike tools, a work stand and floor/track pump. There’s also an espresso coffee machine with beans that are roasted locally. On the TV you’ll have access to Eurosport so you won’t miss the racing while you’re away! Matthieu is happy to offer additional cycling services too – ask him about everything from airport transfers to guided rides, rental bikes and excursions.

This is the place to embrace the Andalusian way of life: beach, tapas, naps and awesome micro-climate all year round.

2. Calpe, Costa Blanca

View from the top of the Serra Gelada with road cyclist in foreground

The small town of Calpe in the south east corner of Spain has become a mecca for cyclists. Its temperate weather conditions, value for money hotels, allied with good quality roads and rolling terrain see thousands of professional and amateur road cyclists fly there in the winter months.

Once you’ve navigated your way out of the town centre, the roads are very quiet with a good surface and littered with climbs that aren’t too long in length but are ideal for winter training.

The area contains some of the best cycling routes in Spain with the Category 2, Coll de Rates being the most famous climb in the area. The nearby Puerto de Tudons, Cumbre del Sol, Alto de Confrides and Val d’Ebo have all also featured on the professional circuit.

Like many places in southern Spain, the weather gets too warm and uncomfortable for cycling in the summer months and the influx of holiday makers does tend to increase the vehicular traffic on the roads.

Don’t forget to check out the famous Calpe rock (Peñon d’Ifach) which stands out of the water some 300 metres above the Mediterranean Sea.

Take a look at our in-depth guide to cycling around Calpe, here . Within it you’ll find links to rides featuring Coll de Rates and all of the climbs mentioned above.

This article contains insights on Costa Blanca training camps and cycling holidays .

3. Sierra Nevada

Sierra Nevada mountains, Spain

The Sierra Nevada National Park is the second highest mountain range in Europe after the Alps. Located in Andalucía and near to the historic city of Granada the area is simply stunning; torrential rivers to sheer sided gorges, scree slopes, glacial lakes and cultivated terraces of fruit and vegetables all nestling below the sun kissed and snow topped peaks.

If you do find yourself road cycling in Andalucía or are looking for locations to go cycling near Malaga then don’t miss the opportunity whilst in the area to go cycling in the Sierra Nevada. Spain’s mainland doesn’t have many options for cycling at altitude or climbs over 2,000 metres but here you can actually go even higher!

The Pico Veleta is the highest paved road in Europe at 3,398 metres above sea level and is a staggering 43 kilometres in length (note that the road surface over last 5 kilometres does start to deteriorate).

On the south side of the park there are a multitude of other climbs including one to Trevelez which at nearly 1,500 metres is one of the highest villages in Spain and famed due to its unique climate as being one of the best places in Spain to cure Iberian hams!

On your rest days don’t miss out on a trip to the architectural magnificence of the Alhambra Palace in nearby Granada.

In terms of weather, the Sierra Nevada will be extremely warm in the summer. In the winter, at under 1,000 metres, it would be likely to be a similar temperature as Almeria – so warm for winter training. The difference is that you can go to altitude in the Sierra Nevada, and on those long high climbs it’ll get cold; you’ll need a winter jacket and bib tights gloves etc.

Read our guide to cycling the Sierra Nevada.

In the meantime, this article on cycling in Andalucia (between Seville and Valencia) might be useful.

Best cycling northern Spain

Both flanks of the Pyrenean mountain chain provide a wealth of opportunities for cycling. Northern Spain offers completely different options from the cycling in southern Spain.

From the chic and fashionable Girona, to the peaceful unspoilt, rolling roads of the Costa Daurada and the brutal short climbs near San Sebastián in the Basque Country. There is literally something to suit everyone’s tastes.

The climate in northern Spain tends to be less intensely hot during summer than in southern Spain. Likewise, it’s not quite as warm in the depths of winter. Northern Spain is our pick for spring and summer, Southern Spain for winter and early spring.

4. Girona, Costa Brava

Cyclist at Lake Banyoles near Girona

Girona is undisputedly the cycling capital of Europe (yes, Port de Pollenca might have something to say on that, but in terms of towns/cities rather than regions, we think we’re on safe ground!).

The old town quarter with its cobbled streets, distinctive coloured buildings and spectacular cathedral is extremely charming and is well worth visiting with or without a bike.

It’s a place hundreds of professional cyclists call home and is a centre for professional teams to train in the spring and summer months whilst competing in central Europe. It sometimes seems that the town has geared a fair percentage of its local economy to the sport.

So if you’re looking for some of the best road cycling in Spain then look no further: Girona has a mix of flat and undulating terrain together with the odd challenging climb. About an hour’s riding from the town centre, the ascents of Rocacorba and Mare de Deu de Mont will test anyone’s legs. Nearer to base, the Els Angels climb is probably the most popular climb in the area.

Girona’s climate is perfect for cycling between March and November each year (although you should beware the fact the summers are hot!) whilst offering quiet, smooth roads. From Girona you can also head north west to the Girona Pyrenees and the Garrotxa National Park where there are more climbs to explore such as the testing ascent to the ski resort at Vallter 2000.

Our cycling guide to Girona has loads of information on riding here. There’s more info on the Garrotxa National Park in our Q&A with local cyclist Adrià Moreno . This article on gravel cycling in Girona might also be helpful.

5. Costa Daurada

Cyclist cycling catolinia, past vines and village

The Costa Daurada sits just south of Barcelona, on Spain’s north eastern coastline. Given the popularity of other well-established cycling centres, this area is working hard to build its reputation and at the moment still remains quite a pretty well-kept secret.

If you’re asking yourself where to cycle in Spain and simply want to get away from it all, the Costa Daurada and its long, sandy coastline is well worth a close look. It is extremely accessible location, being served by both Barcelona airports as well as nearby Tarragona. Two professional teams, Bahrain Merida and UAE Emirates, have held training camps recently in the area and there are now more and more cyclo tourists riding the roads around Cambrils and Salou.

The resort is an ideal place to clock up those pre-season base miles and whilst there are many flat roads adjacent to the coast there is no shortage of climbs in the Serra de Llaberia, Serra de Montsant and Muntanyes de Prades areas. Most of the ascents are under 10 kilometres in length at manageable gradients of between 3% and 6%.

The nearby city of Tarragona contains many ancient Roman ruins which date back to Julius Caesar’s reign, so if you’re cycling through Spain this year the Costa Daurada may be worth a look.

Our guide to cycling Costa Daurada has fantastic information on where to stay, ride and when to go. You might also be interested in the Terres de l’Ebre region , just to the south. Take a look!

6. San Sebastián, northern Spain

View over San Sebastian, Spain

The city of San Sebastián is the gastronomic capital of Spain, with more Michelin stars per capita than anywhere else in Europe. It’s clearly well worth a visit for the food alone! Add to this fact that it boasts one of the best beaches in the world, the stunning crescent shaped La Concha, and you can see why we like it!

Together with its own unique language, famed tapas and rolling verdant landscape, the region also has some killer climbs. Notable among these are the Monte Oiz and the Jaikibel, the latter being a staple of the Classica San Sebastián and the Tour of the Basque country races.

If you want to travel further west towards Bilbao, you find yourself in Vuelta country where some of the iconic climbs lie in wait – the Lagos de Covadonga, Alto del Angliru and La Farrapona to name but a few.

The weather can be blustery as it blows off the Bay of Biscay and it gets a fair amount of rain compared to the rest of Spain, but cycling is in the blood of the Basque people and if you are looking to go bike riding in Spain then you won’t be disappointed.

This article on cycling northern Spain is full of useful information.

Best cycling Canary and Balearic islands

Whether you want guided or self-guided cycling, Spain’s islands have plenty to offer.

Whilst Mallorca and Tenerife are far more established as cycling holiday destinations, Gran Canaria is catching up fast. With all year-round sunshine, testing climbs and quieter roads it’s not difficult to see why they are quickly growing in reputation.

For a long weekend break a two-and-a-half-hour flight to Mallorca certainly fits the bill, but for those who are not in a rush and don’t mind the extra two hours flying time the weather is likely to be warmer and the roads quieter in the Canary Islands.

In terms of when to go, Mallorca is a fantastic place to ride through spring and autumn. Summer can be very hectic with regular tourist traffic, and hot too. The Canary Islands, being that much further to fly and closer to the equator, have a more settled, warm climate all year long. We’ve focused on Gran Canaria below, but before deciding which island is for you, read our article that compares the eight different Canary Islands.

7. Mallorca

Cracking views over Pollenca bay from the pepperpot

The largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca is recognised as one of the most popular cycling destinations in the world. with the town of Puerto Pollença being one of the major centres.

The island boasts 300 days of sunshine a year and combined with mild winters and easy accessibility from main European cities it is now seen as the number one ‘go to’ location for biking in Spain. Thousands of amateurs and a large number of professional teams go to the island each year either to train for the forthcoming season or simply to ride for pleasure.

For the amateur cyclist there is an ideal mix of terrain, from the Tramuntana mountain range in the west to the flat but very scenic roads in the east and south. Added to that of course you can test yourself on the same stretches of road that the professionals use whilst at their training camps.

The climbs of Sa Calobra , Formentor and Puig Major , whilst not as steep as the mountains you would find in mainland Europe, are extremely popular and packed with cyclists in the high season. The Mallorca 312 (a 312-kilometre sportive) is going from strength to strength, taking place every April and is now regarded as one of the best events in Europe.

As a popular tourist island, it also has a selection of hotels, bars, shops and restaurants to suit most tastes. The roads can get busy, with both cars and cyclists, so early morning starts in the peak months are recommended.

Our in-depth guide to cycling in Mallorca is a really great resource. It contains links to 20+ other guides and articles on riding on the island including the ever-popular Mallorca 312 .

8. Tenerife

View to Taganaga and the sea

Tenerife has over the last ten years quickly become popular as a cycling destination, particularly during the winter months in the northern hemisphere.

Some of the professional teams soon realised that they could train both at altitude and in beautiful weather without flying long distance (flight time from the UK is 4.5 hours).  As we know from the Mallorca experience, once the professional teams start to train somewhere new then the amateur cyclist soon follows and cycling facilities in the area start to improve. This certainly seems true in Tenerife’s case.

Some of the landscape on the island is dramatic, almost lunar in appearance, and formed out of volcanic rock. The centrepiece to the island is Mount Teide, which sits at 2,356 metres above sea level. To reach the summit you will ride of 45 kilometres at an average of just over 5%!

In addition to the five different routes up to Mount Teide , there are a host of other quality routes on the island none more so than a ride through the Anaga rural park . It’s a tough ride but you will be rewarded with stunning laurel forests, deep ravines, craggy peaks and tiny hamlets as you progress.

If you’re a mountain goat kind of a rider, we think you will particularly enjoy cycling in Tenerife.

Our detailed guide to cycling in Tenerife contains GPX files, routes and maps to help you plan your trip.

9. Gran Canaria

View from Pico de las Nieves, Gran Canaria

The Canary island resort of Gran Canaria is quickly earning a reputation as a fantastic new cycling destination and is a great choice for winter cycling holidays. Sitting just 100 kilometres off the north western coast of Africa, it boasts some 3,000 hours of sunshine each year – that’s 8 hours per day on average. No wonder it’s the perennial favourite photo shot location for our kit partners, stolen goat!

But there’s much more to it than the weather, as the island has everything required to get you in shape for the forthcoming season. You’ll find challenging climbs, quality road surfaces as well as stunning coastal roads and deep canyons. The added advantage of it being a popular holiday destination also means that good hotels, shops and restaurants are in plentiful supply particularly in and around the southern coastal resorts such as Maspalomas.

The Vuelta a España has in recent years visited the island and raced to a stage finish at the summit of the popular Pico de las Nieves (Snow Peak). At 1,950 metres it is the highest point on the island.

One of the other highlights of Gran Canaria is the infamous Valley of Tears, probably the most revered climb on the island. It’s a brutal climb with sections at 25% and is clearly steep enough to test anyone’s legs!

We’re currently writing our guide to Gran Canaria. Sign up to our email list to be the first to hear about it!

There are plentiful opportunities for cyclists in Spain. Cycling holidays are available all over the mainland and islands, giving you a chance to get away into the sun. In most cases they’re also excellent value for money. You just need to make your choice. We hope this has helped!

Challenge Tour in Spain, Couvra is defender

A fter the first eight events of the season, spanning South Africa, India, and Abu Dhabi, the Challenge Tour arrives in Europe for the Challenge de España. From May 9 to May 12, the competition will unfold athe Real Club Sevilla Golf in Spain, featuring five Italian athletes: Stefano Mazzoli, Luca Cianchetti, Pietro Bovari, Gregorio De Leo, and Aron Zemmer.

Challenge, schedule

The title defense falls to French golfer Martin Couvra, who triumphed last year as an amateur. However, all eyes are on Danish golfer Rasmus Neergaard Petersen, the current leader of the Road To Mallorca (order of merit).

Petersen, a professional for just ten months, has already clinched two recent victories—the Kolkata Challenge and the UAE Challenge—and is poised to make a significant leap to the DP World Tour with a potential third win this season.

The field in Seville includes eleven of the top twelve on the money list, showcasing a high level of competition. Among these are five of the other six season winners: Swedes Mikael Lundberg (ranking second) and Bjorn Akesson (eighth), Englishmen John Parry (fourth) and Garrick Porteous (seventh), and Welshman Rhys Enock (fifth).

Noteworthy competitors also include Frenchman Alexander Levy, who seeks a quick return to the DP World Tour after leaving last season, and English players David Horsey and Sam Hutsby. South African Wilco Nienaber and Martin Couvra are also notable for their current form and ranking.

Among the Italian players, Stefano Mazzoli, who is also competing on the Asian Tour this year, showed promise by finishing 25th in Abu Dhabi at the end of April. The other Italians, including De Leo, Zemmer, Bovari, and Cianchetti, are searching for consistency as the season progresses.

The tournament prize pool stands at $270,000, approximately 250,000 euros. This year marks the 25th edition of the Challenge de España, which originated in 1999 with a Spanish victory by Carl Sunesson. Despite the home field advantage, Spanish players have only clinched the title three additional times, with Santiago Tarrio being the most recent in 2021.

The tournament has retained its original name but has been sponsored various times. Martin Couvra is the only past winner participating this year in a field that has seen Rhys Davies (2009, 2015) as its only two-time champion. Notably, Brooks Koepka also left his mark on the event with a win in 2013.
