How Iron Maiden made A Matter Of Life And Death, their best 21st century album

Iron Maiden’s blockbusting A Matter Of Life And Death was released on this day in 2006

A Matter Of Life And Death

“It’s a throwback to our roots,” Bruce Dickinson told Classic Rock  when asked why Iron Maiden had decided to play A Matter Of Life And Death in full during the band's 2006 world tour. “We thought it would be a really great way of differentiating ourselves from the pack, and making a big statement about how vital it is that we do new music. It’s just so important that you do stuff you believe in, and keep everything alive. Otherwise there’s no point in doing it."

Maiden's supreme confidence in their fourteenth studio album was justified. A near-flawless, dark and heavy, progressively-minded behemoth, it was awarded a perfect 10/10 by Metal Hammer and a 9 by Classic Rock , who hailed it as the band's best album "since the 80s." With over half its ten tracks running at over six minutes (three of which hung around the nine minute mark), it also marked the strongest indication yet that Maiden were firmly into a stage of their career where they were more interested in crafting expansive, layered epics than smashing out galloping, four or five-minute heavy metal bangers.

Signs of Maiden's iron-clad belief in A Matter Of Life And Death were there from the beginning. The recording of the album bore all the hallmarks of a band high on confidence, Dickinson noting to Hammer that, despite the album's epic scope, the sextet "finished the record with two months to spare", adding that many of the songs that ended up on A Matter Of Life And Death were "first time takes". The band even took the unusual decision not to properly master the record, believing that a "raw" sound would most accurately represent the organic seamlessness of the recording process.

Understandably, reactions to Maiden's decision to play the album in full were mixed. Younger fans and those embracing what was becoming a second golden age for the metal legends were into the idea. Others keen to see the band just roll out the classics or unearth rare cuts from their back catalogue? Decidedly less impressed. "They should all know by now that this is what we’re going to do," stated Dickinson defiantly. "And they can always sell their tickets to someone else, because there’s plenty of people who want them. That really is our attitude." "It’s a special occasion," added guitarist Dave Murray. "Hopefully in the future people will say: ‘I was there when Iron Maiden played the whole of  A Matter Of Life And Death .’”

Undeterred by the naysayers, Maiden played A Matter Of Life And Death in full no fewer than 44 times as they toured North America, Asia and Europe across the latter part of 2006. Even the following year, when the tour picked up with added Number Of The Beast songs to celebrate that album's 25th anniversary, they still played five tracks from their newest record. "We’re very proud of our history but we’re also very proud of the new album," stated guitarist Janick Gers. "There comes a point where we have to say: this is where we’re at now. You either stagnate or you try to push forward.” The tour also featured one of the most unique and memorable Eddies ever, popping up, binoculars equipped, from a giant tank that was rolled on stage during Iron Maiden .

In an era where many veteran rock and metal bands increasingly rely on past glories, you can't help but marvel at Maiden's determination to stick by their modern material (you only need look at this year's epic Download performance , where the band opened with three cuts from most recent album Senjutsu , to see that that particular ethos is still very much intact). In the case of A Matter Of Life And Death , it'd be easy to write off their stubborn belief in that record as ego were it not for the fact that the album itself holds up so spectacularly.

From top to bottom, it's a world class record. Opening with the breezy, gung ho Different World , A Matter Of Life And Death really sets out its stall with the two tracks that follow: the defiant These Colours Don't Run , inspired by a brilliant piece of ad-libbing from Dickinson during their infamous run-in with Sharon Osbourne at Ozzfest 2005, and Brighter Than A Thousand Suns , a dark, dramatic epic that flies close to nine minutes.

From there on in the hits keep coming. The Pilgrim is a taught and frenetic rager; the imperious and marching The Longest Day bursts into one of Maiden's most searing post-2000 choruses; Out Of The Shadows is classic, swaying Maiden at their anthemic best. The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg is a brooding, angry tale of a fictional character who may have dabbled a little too heavily with the occult. If you needed any more evidence of Maiden's stubbornness around this time, they released the song as the album's lead single despite knowing it'd be ineligible to chart in the UK due to its seven minutes-plus runtime. Needless to say, it remains Maiden's most unique and decidedly un-single-y single ever.

For The Greater Good Of God is probably the album's pinnacle: the longest song on the record, it's a desperately affecting, emotional rally against the futility of war and religion's influence within it. Today, it's comfortably the most streamed song on the album, and it's perhaps no surprise that when Maiden decided to dig into A Matter Of Life And Death when creating the setlist for the Legacy Of The Beast tour, they turned to it.

The album is capped off with Lord Of Light , a track whose eerie, tip-toeing opening gives way to a histrionic injection or pace and bluster, and The Legacy , a nine-minute beast that journeys from medieval campfire balladry to stomping riffs and a final flurry of classic Maiden galloping heroism.

Over a decade and a half on, it's hard to find a single chink in A Matter Of Life And Death 's armour. Of all Maiden's post-2000 offerings, it's the album that managed to push their songwriting forwards and feel ambitious while remaining self-contained and atmospherically consistent. For fans and band alike, the record remains a particular high point of the band's latter years. Only last year, in fact, Bruce Dickinson brought up A Matter Of Life And Death when discussing Senjutsu , noting, " A Matter Of Life And Death  was really good. I’ve gone back and revisited it a little bit, and I thought, ‘Shit, that was a really good album.’"

We'd go one further: A Matter Of Life And Death isn't just a really good album. It's a modern classic. And best of all? We can say we were there when it was played in full.

THIS HEART HAS BEEN BROKEN - EP

by THE LIFE AND DEATH

I'M NOT THE ONE FOR YOU (Angel Cage mix)

You've blown my cover, love don't make us tough.

THE LIFE AND DEATH have injected a new energy into the London UK underground, thrilling crowds with their emotional, dynamic live shows.

The songs are of love and heartbreak; hope and despair; belonging and betrayal. And the sound is explosive and catchy as hell.

Music for the lost, the hopeful and the brave of heart.

Since 2015, there have been five self-produced releases and a string of packed-out shows at some of London's most important and iconic underground venues.

A major new release from THE LIFE AND DEATH is scheduled for 2023.

"We need song-slingers like this, we need that commitment, we need people who throw it all and more in there or indeed out there. There’s some beautiful detail in Hey Sister, some heartfelt joy, is it joy? Is it a cry? Hey sisters, hey brothers. It kind of feels like a stolen look through the cracks, a sneaked view into a private sketch book of songs." Organ

"The late visionary Jim Morrison insisted that people are afraid of both life and death. Exposing yourself to those fears will cause them to shrink and vanish, leaving freedom and power in their place.

Similarly, the music from THE LIFE AND DEATH feels like a ceremony, bringing shaky, uncertain listeners to a state of communion, washed free of fear with its audibly pulsating heartbeat of new wave rock. These are punks with souls." LSR

"Illustrious and dark. From the beginning it gave me the chills." RGM

"What a magnificent vocal. A fresh and new style of new-wave and post-punk." Chatsong

What happens when I subscribe to The Life and Death?

Once you subscribe, you get access to all our releases to date, which you can download in high-quality audio formats or stream as much as you like via the Bandcamp app on your mobile devices. You'll get instant access to all the new material we're going to be releasing and there will also be access to exclusive tracks and more.

We've launched subscription at £3 per month and you will always pay the same subscription fee that you sign up with, no matter if it goes up in the future.

Why are we doing this? Well, we want to start using a model that will help support us and that will, at the same time, help us support The Life and Death community. Are you on Spotify or Apple Music?

No. We are not currently putting our releases out on the open streaming platforms? Why? Because they are just not working for us (and, we would say, for the majority of artists). They don't support us, pay us fairly or give us anything that works for us as artists. Who knows? Maybe we might do something with some of them at some point in the future. But only if things change.

When can I see you play?

life and death tour

Cheslie Kryst’s mother opens up about finishing the book about her daughter’s life

Editor’s note: This story contains mentions of mental health and suicide. If you or someone you know needs immediate assistance, help is available. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24/7 by calling or texting 988 or visiting 988lifeline.org .

Like many mothers and daughters, Cheslie Kryst and April Simpkins were extremely close, talking every day. But, one day in 2022, Simpkins picked up the phone to call her daughter after teaching a workout class — one she’d thought about skipping — and instead had a text that changed her life forever:

“First, I’m sorry,” Cheslie had written. “By the time you get this, I won’t be alive anymore and it makes me even more sad to write this because I know it will hurt you most.”

Before she tragically died by suicide at age 30 , Cheslie had begun working on her memoir and nearly two years later, her mom has completed it. The newly released book, “By the Time You Read This,” begins with Cheslie’s story in her own words. Her mom then picks up the narrative, and she shares what she went through after her daughter’s death.

[TAKE A DEEPER LOOK: Former Miss USA Cheslie Kryst’s mother reveals daughter’s final message before her death.]

Finishing what Cheslie started

As the longest reigning Miss USA in history, Kryst had a significant and historical impact. During her time as a titleholder, she was part of the infamous “Black dynasty” of national and international pageant queens.

Aside from the coveted crown she’d worked for years to earn, she also held a long list of other titles she was famously known for: special correspondent for Extra TV, global impact ambassador for Dress for Success, attorney and USC track and field athlete — just to name a few.

[SHINING BRIGHT: After 557 days as Miss USA, Cheslie Kryst’s reign ends soon. But she’s not done.]

In the book, Kryst opened up about her reign and the trials and tribulations she faced before, during and after her tenure as Miss USA, including dealing with imposter syndrome, online bullying and the pressure to be perfect.

“While her intention had been to write a book about a distinct period in her life — balancing her work as Miss USA, an attorney and an Extra correspondent — she also gave a behind-the-scenes look into the minds, thoughts, feelings and emotions of a woman battling and managing depression,” Simpkins wrote.

The story had been in the works since 2021 — the same year she first published a piece about her reign and the reality of turning 30 — and her mother was determined to see it through for her daughter, to share her life and death.

“It feels like closure because I know it’s something she wanted,” Simpkins told CharlotteFive. “I had not ever in my life written a book. I had no idea what the process was like, and so I didn’t know what to expect. But some days, it felt like I was pushing a boulder uphill by myself so at this point, honestly, it feels like closure. It was the last wish that she left for me that I was still working on.”

The two had a very close relationship, so much so that they were also best friends.

“We would talk all the time anyway … but when she would come home, it’s like we were inseparable,” Simpkins said. “We could sit and have a very serious heart-to-heart conversation about relationships, about faith, and we could shift gears and rewatch “ The Devil Wears Prada ” and laugh until tears were coming, you know, as we’re reciting every word.

“Like, I miss that connection. It felt mutual. Like she had someone who just got her, and I had someone who just got me, and so I miss that.”

Though Simpkins knew her daughter had been working on a book, she hadn’t seen the manuscript until after she passed.

“There weren’t any surprises in the book, by way of experiences. But there were some things that I learned regarding her deep emotion,” she said. “There’s probably only one part of the book that when I first read it, it really kind of broke my heart and that was, in the beginning when she was talking about meeting her stylist … about wearing suits and and you know, how that got her choked up.”

After winning Miss USA, Kryst left the stylist meeting feeling defeated about finding a common ground on a wardrobe that could work for appearances but also felt true to who she was.

“I struggled with thinking I wasn’t good enough for the role I’d earned, that I would never measure up to the perfection I assumed the other fifty contestants were capable of and would have displayed if given the chance,” she wrote in the book. “The constant inner voice repeating ‘never enough’ was compounded by the treatment from the world seeming to confirm my fear.”

That feeling of “imposter syndrome” wasn’t just one that she mentioned feeling in a performance, competition or interview, she went on to say, but something she dealt with in everyday life, too, especially being a young Black woman.

“I love that Cheslie touched on that in a very transparent way in the book, because it is something that we all as Black women have to manage,” her mother told CharlotteFive. “There’s an expectation that I think rests on the shoulders of each of us that when you step forward, you represent all of us … and she felt that.”

But despite the backlash and bullying, she still presented her bubbly personality — online and off.

“A big part [of her legacy] was just how authentic she was, and I think that’s what made her relatable, and made so many people feel like they could connect with her,” Simpkins said.

“A part of who she was that I absolutely adored, was the depth and breadth of her knowledge … so you never felt you never felt like you weren’t enlightened or important or valued when you talk to her .… it’s one of the reasons why, in my opinion, so many people consider Cheslie to be their best friend — because when they would talk to her, whether they were asking her advice about law school or pageant dresses or places to go in New York, like, she could engage with you. And I love that about her.”

[ONE OF A KIND: ‘She embodied grace’: Former Miss USA and NC lawyer Cheslie Kryst remembered.]

‘A supporter, not a savior’

With the new book, she hopes it’ll not only help carry out her daughter’s legacy but also be a reminder of the importance of mental health, which she now calls her life’s mission.

“At Cheslie’s funeral, I kept thinking, ‘I have to survive this because my family shouldn’t have to bury me this soon after losing Cheslie,’ Simpkins wrote in her portion of the memoir.

“I had to keep going. My husband needed me, my children needed me and Cheslie needed me. She needed me to tell her story and save lives.”

After reading the manuscript, Simpkins thought, “This is the only book my baby will ever write, and her words, her honesty in sharing her emotional and mental state, balanced with her vulnerability, are going to save lives. People will read this and relate to her.”

As detailed in the book, Kryst struggled with depression for years.

“When Cheslie passed, there were so many people who would declare that they couldn’t believe it … that someone like Cheslie could be struggling with depression,” Simpkins told CharlotteFive.

“So I hope that in reading the book they learn that sometimes there’s a difference between a person you see and the way they feel … and that’s why I declare all the time, just be kind, because you don’t know what people are going through.”

‘By the time you read this’ book tour

In honor of the release of “By the Time You Read This,” Simpkins will be hosting two book signing events with a Q&A session in the Charlotte area. The first launch event will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 25 at the Barnes & Noble Arboretum location, followed by another at 6 p.m. May 2 in Rock Hill at York Technical College. At 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 3, Simpkins will be a guest speaker at a National Alliance on Mental Illness Charlotte benefit at Southern Pecan Gulf Coast Kitchen.

Net proceeds from book sales will go toward the Cheslie C. Kryst Foundation, founded in her honor.

“I knew that I wanted someplace for those funds to go, that would continue Cheslies legacy of giving, so that is what this foundation is going to do and I’m just so proud of it,” Simpkins told CharlotteFive.

“I cannot wait until we are able to send our first check out to an organization that is out there doing the work and needs the support so they can help our youth and teens with their mental health and well being. I just cannot wait for that day.”

Mourning her loss: TobyMac remembers Mandisa after Christian singer's death, 'I know her battle is over ...'

Other's shared how her music and writing helped them through some of the toughest times in their lives. Actress Candace Cameron Bure shared broken heart emojis under the post, while Christian rap artist Wande offered condolences.

Fellow Christian musician and friend Colton Dixon, shared memories of being on the road with Mendisa and Toby Mac.

"Mandisa is the sweetest, kindest soul that  @anniedixon__  and I have met on the road. After hearing she went to be with the Jesus last night I was reflecting this morning on the times we had together," Dixon wrote.

Singer and songwriter Matthew West paid tribute to his longtime friend and collaborator with lyrics from their song "Only the World", stating that they "hit differently" now that Mandisa was gone.

"I am so incredibly saddened to hear about the loss of my friend Mandisa. I will always cherish the memories of times we spent together hosting award shows, going on tour, and most of all helping her tell her story in the songwriting room," West also wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts also paid tribute to the late singer.

"My heart is heavy hearing about Mandisa. Incredibly blessed that she was there my first day back on ⁦ @GMA ⁩ following my long medical leave. Her beautiful music & spirit lifted me and countless others," Roberts wrote on X.

Fellow musician Don Moen provided a statement to The Tennessean, saying Mandisa was not only a powerhouse of a talent, but that she also possessed a genuinely kind spirit.

"We ministered together several times, she sang background vocals on my album 'Thank You Lord' and joined me on several tours," the statement read. "On one particular tour, notes kept appearing in everyone's bunk on the bus or in their instrument cases. These were encouraging messages like: 'You are blessed and highly favored,' or 'You're such a blessing on this tour.' Only at the end of the tour did we discover it had been Mandisa. Whether behind the scenes or center stage, her presence always brought joy and hope.

Where was Mandisa from?

Mandisa was born in California, but her home was in Tennessee.

She graduated Fisk University in Nashville in 2000 and was a member of the famed Fisk University Jubilee singers. She called Tennessee home after her graduation, through her "American Idol" tenure, a Grammy win, multiple albums and until her death on Thursday.

Sioux City Public Museum brings history to life during walking tour at Logan Park Cemetery

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) -The Sioux City Public Museum taught a memorable history lesson while walking through the Logan Park Cemetery Saturday morning.

The walking tour took place on Saturday, April 27 at 10 a.m. The 90-minute walking tour is part of the Museum’s rotating tour of Sioux City cemeteries.

They provide the public with stories of notable individuals who have helped shape Sioux City’s existence such as prominent businessmen, famous cartoonists and more.

Museum Archives Manager, Tom Munson says cemeteries provide a great opportunity to learn about the town’s past.

“We talk about the people buried here. We talk about symbolism on headstones,” Munson said. “I think it’s just a great way for modern citizens to look back at the past, the people who have helped build up this community.”

KTIV’s Clayton Anderson will have more on Logan Park Cemetery in an upcoming episode of Hometown History.

TobyMac remembers Mandisa after Christian singer's death, 'I know her battle is over ...'

life and death tour

Many in the Christian music industry and beyond have posted on social media to celebrate the life of and mourn the loss of singer Mandisa Hundley who was found dead last week at the age of 47.

Amy Grant said in an Instagram post that "Mandisa's smile was like turning on sunshine." Matthew West said he will "always cherish the memories of times we spent together hosting awards shows, going on tour and most of all helping tell her story in the songwriting room."

But few worked as closely with Mandisa as friend and frequent collaborator TobyMac (Toby McKeehan), who posted over the weekend that we "lost a beautiful soul."

McKeehan and Hundley collaborated on songs such as "Lose My Soul," "Good Mornin'" and "Bleed the Same."

"I have never met an artist who is more encouraging and supportive to other artists than Mandisa," McKeehan said on social media

"She was honest and authentic but I always left her side feeling better. She watched every act, every night on every tour singing along with a smile that made you feel alive... I was honored to call her friend. She was honest about her struggles and viewed her breakthroughs as an opportunity to let others know that they can experience victories just like her. She saw us as a family. God’s family. In all our diversity. All flawed. And all in need of the love of a Good Father, a Heavenly Father. I know her battle is over but I will always treasure her memory and that smile and infectious laugh that I had the pleasure of experiencing."

Hundley was found dead in her Franklin home on April 18. An active death investigation is underway by the Franklin Police Department.

After growing up in California, Hundley attended Fisk University in Nashville and was a member of the famed Fisk University Jubilee singers. She graduated from Fisk in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in music, according to the university.

In 2005, Hundley auditioned for "American Idol" in Chicago, where she went on to finish in the final nine.
