Today marks what would have been the 85th birthday of Canadian music icon Gordon Lightfoot. To honour his music and legacy, Massey Hall, in collaboration with the Lightfoot Estate, proudly announces Celebrating Gordon Lightfoot on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Massey Hall .

The evening, led by two extraordinary house bands, Blue Rodeo and the members of Gordon Lightfoot’s longtime band, The  Lightfoot Band (Rick Haynes, Barry Keane, Mike Heffernan and Carter Lancaster) , will feature performances by Allison Russell, Aysanabee, Burton Cummings, Caroline Wiles & Bob Doidge, Meredith Moon, Sylvia Tyson, The Good Brothers, Tom Cochrane, William Prince with more to be announced.

Proceeds from  Celebrating Gordon Lightfoot,  as requested by the Gordon Lightfoot Estate, will support Massey Hall, a charitable not-for-profit, including the Revitalization of the Hall, its music appreciation, education, community outreach and artist development initiatives.

Tickets go on sale for Celebrating Gordon Lightfoot next Thursday, November 23 and available for purchase at masseyhall.com or by calling the Massey Hall box office at 416-872-4255.

BLUE RODEO ANNOUNCE FIRST EVER VINYL PRESSING OF A MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU

Warner Music Canada recording artists Blue Rodeo have announced the first ever vinyl pressing of their holiday classic A Merry Christmas to You. The album arrives with brand new artwork, created by Canadian artist Arthur Keelor, great uncle to the band’s vocalist Greg Keelor. In addition to the vinyl pressing the album will also be available on CD with the brand new artwork. A Merry Christmas to You is available now – click here to order!

Blue Rodeo are currently celebrating the 30-year anniversary of their iconic album Five Days in July. Originally released on October 26, 1993, Five Days in July contains the hit singles “5 Days in May,” “Hasn’t Hit Me Yet,” “Cynthia,” “Bad Timing,” “Head Over Heels” and their cover of Rodney Crowell’s “Til I Gain Control Again.” Recorded at Greg Keelor’s farm and featuring guest performances from Sarah McLachlan and Anne Bourne, the album went on to become the band’s most commercially successful album, having been certified six-times Platinum in Canada.

Blue Rodeo at Massey Hall

By naming its Massey Hall show “Songs Seldom Heard”, Blue Rodeo set certain expectations. Greg Keelor and Jim Cuddy, the two stellar songwriters fronting the band, have penned many songs that are now staples in the CanCon canon. Die hard fans may have been hoping for their favourite deep cuts or songs that the band hasn’t played in ages, while casual fans may have been hoping for a few hits. Either way, the carefully curated setlist did not disappoint.

The band kicked things off with Outskirts, the titular track from their 1987 debut album and then offered up How Long, a tune from its sophomore record, Diamond Mine. The night did not include much story-telling, but for the lead-in to Piranha Pool, Keelor alluded to the Reagan era being “the beginning of the neo-fascist movement in conservative politics that we see today” and then let the lyrics say the rest.

As Blue Rodeo meandered its way through its early back-catalogue, each member of the band had moments to prove their skill and ease on stage. The performances were enhanced by the occasional organ/accordion/guitar solo. The magic atmosphere of Massey Hall only intensified the sonic experience of songs like Side of the Road, House of Dreams or Joker’s Wild. Blue Rodeo’s sound easily straddles the arbitrary lines that separate Country from Rock making it universally appealing.

Throughout the night, Keelor thanked the audience for letting them play these “old songs”, but the real hit parade came at the end of the night. Cuddy segued “from seldom heard to often heard” and launched into a string of radio-staples starting with Til I Am Myself Again and 5 Days In May. Cuddy and Keelor then sparked the moment that the audience was yearning for… they stepped to the front of the stage and played the opening notes of It Hasn’t Hit Me Yet. They had no mics, they didn’t need them; the fans belted out every word.

With utter disregard for the 11:00 p.m. Toronto “concert curfew”, Blue Rodeo played a three-song encore starting with a fever-pitched You’re Everywhere. They then slowed things down with two final Blue Rodeo classics. First, Jim Cuddy took to the piano to lead a perfect rendition of the band’s first hit, Try. And finally, joined on stage by show openers Brooks and Bowskill and long-time friend Matt Mays, all of Massey Hall happily sang a rousing sing-along version of Lost Together… together.

Show was awesome! These guys sound great live and provide a great show. Definitely recommend seeing if have the opportunity. The venue was the outdoor amphitheater at the PNE and sounded great although the seating is a little uncomfortable, recommend bringing cishionnor something to sit on.

My wife and I hve seen Blue Rodeo 20 to 25 times. First show was at a small theatre in North Tonawanda NY, maybe 1988 to 1990. James Grey played the Wurlitzer organ, rising from the orchestra pit to "Lost Together". We never miss a show within 60 miles of us, sometimes further. Best thing EVER out of Canada, including Tim Horton's coffee. Hope for a Western New York show this year.

Best venue anywhere for Blue Rodeo, love them and had a great time. Drove 4 hours just for them, worth every minute of driving! Have done it in previous years and will do it again next year.
