I have been fascinated by the Blasket Islands for a long time and was looking forward to this trip so much. And I was not disappointed!. We had a quick ride out to the Great Blasket and were dropped off without mishap! We happily explored the island, enjoying seeing seals, sheep, hares… Our three hours passed quickly. We met our boat and were taken on a 3 hour marine tour further out in ocean waters. Our pilot and naturalist were pleasant, knowledgable and fun to be with. We saw many different varieties of sea birds, dolphins, basking sharks and minke whales. I would add if you are considering a boat nature tour, you should do it now! And you should book with Mick Sheeran,, Blasket Islands Eco Marine Tours. Read more Written 19 April 2024

Blasket Island was a lovely addition to our travels, amazing to see the seals on the beach and learn the history of the island. The guides did an amazing job to find marine wildlife but the fog descended … luckily there were some lovely dolphins and plenty of seabirds to keep us company. They were lovely guides for our day. I have not been disappointed on either trip. Thanks again to Mick, the owner who tries to reduce my expectations (always fails), to Vincent the driver who has a nose to find wildlife and to John, the guide who describes the animals. We decided to do the morning trip and we were delighted we did. We saw some beautiful animals and it was a real privilege to be allowed to see them in their natural environment. Richard, the naturalist on the tour, was incredibly knowledgeable and patient with our very basic questions. His enthusiasm was infectious. If you get a chance do one of these tours. All Covid 19 regulations were carried out and hand sanitizer was generous. We felt safe and secure throughout. (Both in our mid seventies.) The big guys - whales etc. were having a day off but we saw puffins and a variety of other sea birds. The grey seals were plentiful near Blasket Mor and when we 'Meowed' to them they followed the boat! Mike also gave us a glimpse into Island life as he had lived there for some years The scenery was a gift from the gods. We will be back! Many thanks. Annmarie and Frances. Dingle Peninsula – Eco Marine Tours

During the summer I got a text from Mick O’Connell, not the footballer, but Mick of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group telling me about two Humpback Whales that appeared off Clogher Head on the Dingle Peninsula.

Some Facts on Humpback Whales;

  • They can grow up to 19 metres (62 feet). The length of an average bus is 45ft
  • They can eat 5,500 pounds (2,500kg) of plankton, krill and small fish each day
  • Adults typically weigh about 40,000kg
  • Humpbacks can live for up to 50 years

Unfortunately for the tour operators, these whales are not as obliging as Fungie, the Dingle Dolphin, so there is no guarantee of seeing them. However, this area is rich in marine life so look out for Minke Whales, dolphins, seals and a marvelous variety of sea birds.

If you want a chance to see these magnificent creatures the people to contact to contact are Dingle Bay Charters at the Marina in Dingle and Mick Sheeran in Ventry.

Blasket-Island-Eco-Tours

Wild Atlantic Way Cottage

Eco Marine Tours Ventry

Located only about a 30 minute drive from our Bed and Breakfast and self-catering cottage over the breathtaking Conor Pass lies the peaceful village of Ventry (Ceann Trá) where you find a shop, post office, a pub that serves delicious food, and a lovely garden café at the head of mile long, sandy and safe beach. Ventry is also the departure point for Blasket Islands Eco Marine Tours. These wildlife centred tours will bring you to and around the ruggedly beautiful Blasket archipelago teeming in wildlife and history.

There are three different tours to choose from – one includes a 3 hour stopover on the Great Blasket Island (all details are listed on www.marinetours.ie ). Blasket Islands Eco Marine Tours’ main focus is the wildlife, and a zoologist and/or wildlife guide accompany the trips, help to spot the birdlife, cetaceans and grey seals and will engage in informal chats with the passengers throughout the tours.

Boat tours Dingle

The islands hold major colonies of seabirds, the second largest grey seal colony in Ireland and – if lucky and the cetaceans are feeding in the area – you might see some of our harbour porpoises, common, Risso’s and bottlenose dolphins, minke whales and sometimes even humpback whales!

Please note that the ocean is big and it is not a zoo – the crew will combine all efforts by sea and land based watchers and years of experience to find any wildlife out there but there can never be any guarantee of sightings… However, the wonderful landscape thankfully stays in place and you will experience the Wild Atlantic Ocean at first hand!

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Nizhny Novgorod

Nizhny Novgorod is the fifth largest city in Russia with a population exceeding 1.2 million. The city is located at the confluence of two rivers - the Volga and Oka. It is the center of Nizhny Novgorod region and Volga Federal District, as well as one of the country’s major administrative, economic and cultural centers.

Furthermore, Nizhny Novgorod is the Russia’s largest industrial center with the enterprises of mechanical engineering, metalworking information technology playing a leading role.

Nizhny Novgorod was founded in 1221 by Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich to protect Russian borders. Under Ivan III, Nizhny Novgorod was a sentry city. It had a regular army. This was the place for Moscow to march against Kazan.

Nizhny Novgorod made a great contribution to the construction of the Russian state. In 1612, Kuz’ma Minin and Prince Dmistry Pozharsky’s militia from Nizhny Novgorod played a decisive role in the liberation of Moscow from Polish intervention.

During the Soviet period from 1932 to 1990, the city was named after Maxim Gorky, the Great Russian writer who was born there. From 1959 to 1991 it was a “forbidden” city for foreigners because of defense plants, located there. On October 22, 1990 the city got its former name, and about at the same time, it began developping tourist business.

Today, the city, once playing such a significant role in the history of Russia, is developed into a modern metropolis. So, the urban development plan intends to build a metro bridge, cableway, funicular, and a new branched transport infrastructure there. Furthermore, Nizhny Novgorod is the Russia’s largest center of river cruise tourism and venue of Nizhny Novgorod fair-based major international exhibitions.

Nizhny Novgorod is one of the richest cultural centers of Russia. The most prominent artists have received education in the local theater and art schools. The city has opened a large number of theaters, museums and cinemas.

This city can surprise any traveler by an entwinement of modern and ancient buildings, each time rising before your eyes in a completely unexpected appearance.

Districts [ edit ]

The city is divided by the River Oka into two major parts: the Upper city ( Verkhnyaya or Nagornaya chast ) on the hilly right side and the Lower city ( Nizhnyaya or Zarechnaya chast — what literally means "the part over the river") on the left bank of the river. The Upper city is the old historical part of Nizhny Novgorod, whereas the Lower city is larger, newer and consists of more industrial districts.

Understand [ edit ]

Map

History [ edit ]

The city was founded by Grand Duke George II of Russia in 1221 at the confluence of two most important rivers of his principality, the Volga and the Oka. Its name literally means Newtown the Lower , to distinguish it from the older Novgorod . A major stronghold for border protection, Nizhny Novgorod fortress took advantage of a natural moat formed by the two rivers.

Along with Moscow and Tver, Nizhny Novgorod was among several newly founded towns that escaped Mongol devastation on account of its insignificance and grew up into important centers of Russian political life during the period of Tatar yoke. For a short period of time it was the capital of the Suzdal Principality and competed with Moscow for the power in the region. However the competition with Moscow was lost and in 1392 the city was incorporated into Muscovy. Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin was built in 1508-1511 (under supervision of the Italian fortress engineers) and became one of the strongest Russian citadels. There is a legend saying that the project was initially developed with participation of Leonardo da Vinci. However there is no documented proof of Leonardo's work for that project, the only thing the legend is based on is the striking resemblance of Leonardo's sketches and the actual Kremlin schemes. The fortress was strong enough to withstand Tatar sieges in 1520 and 1536.

In 1612, the so-called national militia , gathered by a local merchant Kuzma Minin and commanded by Knyaz Dmitry Pozharsky expelled the Polish troops from Moscow, thus putting an end to the Time of Troubles and establishing the rule of the Romanov dynasty.

In 1817, the Makaryev Monastery Fair, one of the liveliest in the world the 16th-18th centuries, was transferred to Nizhny Novgorod, which thereupon started to attract numerous visitors and by the mid-19th century it turned Nizhny Novgorod into trade capital of the Russian Empire.

Under the Soviet period, the trade connections of the city were abandoned and Nizhny Novgorod became an important industrial centre instead. During the communist time the city was closed to foreigners to safeguard the security of Soviet military research. The physicist and the Nobel laureate Andrei Sakharov was exiled there during 1980-1986 to limit his contacts with foreigners.

Climate [ edit ]

The climate in the region is humid continental and it is similar to the climate in Moscow , although colder in winter, which lasts from late November until late March with a permanent snow cover.

By car [ edit ]

Nizhny Novgorod is situated on the M7/E30 road. The road is in decent condition, although with traffic it can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours to drive to/from Moscow .

By boat [ edit ]

Turflot [dead link] , Infoflot , and many other companies operate multi-day river cruises down the Volga from early May to the end of September.

Many companies operate passenger boat service between Moscow and Astrakhan , with stops at most cities along the Volga River.

Get around [ edit ]

By foot [ edit ].

The city centre is compact and walkable. However, there are many inclines or steps from the river banks. The bridges are not pedestrian friendly since the sidewalk is very narrow and cars drive extremely fast close to the pedestrians.

By city rail [ edit ]

The City Rail connects areas where there are no metro lines. Connects with the subway at the Moscow railway station. It has 2 lines: Sormovskaya and Priokskaya. The fare by train costs 28 rubles. According to the Citicard Transport Card, the fare is 26 rubles. Also by train you can get to the nearest suburb, or transfer to suburban trains to Dzerzhinsk, Bor, Semenov or Arzamas.

By bus and trolleybus [ edit ]

marine tours ventry

As of May 2017 in each district of the city there are several city bus routes. The number of trolleybus routes is much less. In one district of the city there are 1-2 trolleybus routes. Trolleybus routes are completely absent in the Leninsky city district. It is worth noting that trolleybuses do not connect the Lower City to the Upper. This is because the trolleybuses do not have enough power to climb the mountain.

The trolleybus network is divided into 3 parts:

  • The upper trolleybus network (it unites all three districts - Nizhegorodsky, Sovetsky and Prioksky) with a turning circle on the Minin Square, near the Kremlin.
  • The lower trolleybus network (connects Kanavinsky, Moskovsky and Sormovsky districts)
  • The Avtozavod trolleybus network (connects all the distant sleeping microdistricts among themselves)

By tram [ edit ]

Throughout the city, land trams run. The longest route of all is 417. It connects the outskirts of Avtozavodsky district with the Moskovsky Rail Terminal. The journey takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The route passes through the sleeping areas (approximately 75% of the way). Also in remote neighborhoods there are routes of several more trams, but in most cases, they are in the Upper City. By the way, you can reach there by tram 27 or 10 directly from the Moscow railway station.

By marshrutka [ edit ]

Marshrutkas do not stop at every stop. To indicate your intention to exit a marshrutka, press a button and to indicate your intention to enter a marshrutka en-route, you need to wave your hand.

By bicycle [ edit ]

Nizhny Novgorod has not very developed bicycle infrastructure. Special bike paths exist only on the Upper-Volga and Lower-Volga embankments and on Rozhdestvenskaya Street.

The upper city is very hilly and full of steep inclines and even many locals will get off their bicycles and push their bikes up the hill by foot. Drivers can be reckless and pose a danger to cyclists. The roads can also be icy during the winter. City cyclists solve this problem by replacing summer tires with winter tires.

Also, in 2017 the implementation of a new integrated transport scheme of the city began. It provides for a large number of bicycle paths in the Upper City (including on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street) and in the Lower City.

About Nizhniy Novgorod

Blagoveshensky Monastery. XIXth century

Fifteen years ago the entrance to Nizhniy Novgorod (then Gorkiy city ) was strictly off-limits to foreigners. This beautiful and ancient city also happened to house military manufacturing plants and scientific research centers, the sort of attractions normally not listed as must-see tourist attractions with the local Chamber of Commerce.

Minin and Pozharsky Square

Nizhniy Novgorod is an ancient city founded at the beginning of thirteenth century. The Second World War had not reached it (factories were only occasionally bombed by fascist planes), and the majority of churches, monasteries, and merchant houses remain intact. Initially, the entire city was located behind the walls of the Kremlin, an unassailable fortress made of red brick, constructed on a huge hill. Today, the Kremlin is still located on the same hill, and as grand as ever! Today there are more than one and a half million people living in Nizhniy Novgorod, there are more than ten institutes and universities, famous theatres, art galleries, museums, and succeeding enterprises such as the Nizhniy Novgorod Fair, well known throughout Russia. Due to its size and importance, it is often referred to as "the third capital of Russia".

Our Lady Joy of All Suffer Church

Nizhniy Novgorod is home to numerous tourist attractions including the two largest Russian rivers, the Volga and the Oka. (These two mighty rivers converge on the city and flow as one. The city is located on hills, overlooking the majestic rivers.) The historical downtown area is small, however it is possible to stroll about the streets for hours. There is no shortage of loving couples strolling along the Verhnevolzhskaya embankment. Most declarations of love are rumored to take place exactly here: the beauty of a huge river and shady avenues make for the perfect backdrop.

You will find some of the most beautiful women in the city walking along the popular "Big Pokrovskaya" street. This pedestrian street is about two kilometers long and considered the most popular place in Nizhniy. The most expensive shops, cafe, bars, and best restaurants (the majority feature Russian cuisine, but you will also find Mexican, Chinese and Georgian) are situated along both sides of the street. All the ancient buildings have been restored and painted bright colors - making it the most cheerful street of the city. Each evening you will find it filled with people enjoying the art exhibits, street performers, or just taking a casual stroll with that special someone. One of the most popular attractions of "Big Pokrovska" is the free "Fashion Show", arranged on a daily basis by beautiful single girls.

In short, each visitor will discover something special in Nizhniy Novgorod. Peaceful moon-light sails along the rivers, monasteries, churches, narrow ancient streets, wide prospects, cozy small restaurants, modern night clubs - there are choices to suit every taste. In fact, UNESCO recognized Nizhniy Novgorod as one of the top 100 cities representing a world cultural value.
