BMW E8x E9x Cruise Control Retrofit - Cruise in Style!

Georg Meier

Georg Meier

Ever jumped into your BMW E82, E84 or E90 and thought, “Man, I wish I had cruise control?” Well, folks, today’s your lucky day! This guide will take you on a cruise-y journey to retrofitting your beloved Beemer. We’ll tackle:

  • Switching out the SZL module.
  • The coding voodoo magic.
  • Steering angle sensor calibrations.
  • ...And all the juicy details in between.

Grab a coffee, buckle up, and let’s ride!

Cruise Control 101

Cruise control on E9x and E8x isn’t just a mod; it’s a lifestyle upgrade. While some models are like a walk in the park, others will test your mechanic ninja skills. This little chat? We’re focused on the basic cruise control (option code 540) . For the uninitiated, here’s a quick model breakdown:

  • BMW 1-Series (E81 to E88)
  • BMW 3-Series (E90 to E93)
  • BMW X1 (E84)

Guess how long it’ll take? If you said "as long as watching a sitcom episode" - bingo! About 20 minutes, if the stars align and your car’s in tip-top shape. Though, after my bazillionth retrofit, I've got it down to just 10 minutes - and that's with the test drive!

Cruise Control: Choose Your Fighter

  • Option 540 – Simple Cruise Control : Think of this as “set it and forget it.” Except when you’re going downhill – you’ll slow down courtesy of engine drag torque.
  • Option 544 – The One With Brake Function : This one's got your back, and brakes. If the engine can't slow you down, the DCS control module jumps in to help.
  • Option 541 – Active Cruise Control : Your BMW's got eyes! It'll slow down if there's a car ahead. Perfect for those long, traffic-filled drives.

Cylinders Matter!

4-cylinders? Your retrofit’s all about switching up the steering column stuff. If you’re rolling in a 6-cylinder E90, things are a tad different. These usually come with cruise control, but if you lucked out, you can opt for the brake function or the active cruise control.

Fun fact: E90s up to 09/2006 had a special LDM unit to manage cruise control. Post that? The DSC control unit took over.

Let's Retrofit!

Get ready to switch out the SZL and lower steering column trim. Once that’s done, we’ll dive into the coding realm, calibrate the steering angle sensor, and do some error memory spring cleaning.

You’ll Need :

bmw e90 cruise control install

  • Steering Column Switch Cluster (Watch out for that rear wiper!)
  • Steering Column Lower Trim Section

Tool Time :

  • 10mm wrench (battery)
  • 16mm socket & ratchet (steering wheel)
  • Torx T25 screwdriver (SZL module)
  • A wee flat screwdriver

The Retrofit Ritual

  • Steering Wheel Removal : Disconnect the battery, pop out the driver’s airbag (carefully!), and get those plug connections out.
  • SZL Replacement : Adjust the steering column, unclip the trim, and swap out the SZL. Four screws and you're golden!

Coding Magic

Time to tell your BMW how to play nice with its new cruise control. Whether you're a fan of ISTA, various coding apps, or NCS Expert (my personal fave), get ready to code!

bmw e90 cruise control install

  • Add the $540 code to your vehicle FA.
  • Code KOMBI and DSC. Fun fact: SZL can't be coded, but DSC will pass on the message.

Steering Wheel Sensor Calibration : Occasionally, you might not need this step. But chances are, you will. Using ISTA or Tool32 (my go-to), you'll get this done in a jiffy.

bmw e90 cruise control install

Finish it off by clearing any error memories with INPA.

bmw e90 cruise control install

Here's the full guide to steering angle sensor calibration:

bmw e90 cruise control install

Finishing Touches

Snap the airbag unit back, make sure all plugs are connected, and voila! You're ready for a spin.

Cruise Control Crash Course

The cruise control lever's on the left of the steering column. Here's the quick and dirty on how it works:

  • Activate : Press the lever to the side.
  • Set Speed : Briefly press the lever backward.
  • Increase Speed : Hold the lever backward.
  • Decrease Speed : Briefly or hold the lever forward.
  • Deactivate : Press the lever up or down.

And remember, there are some conditions for activating and deactivating, so make sure you're in the know!

So there you have it, the ultimate guide to making your BMW cruise in style. Until next time, drive safe and retrofit responsibly! 🚗💨

Later cars have the NFRM rather than the FRM mate so don't worry about that. Once you've added the option code and written it to the CAS then the NFRM, you need to close NCS then open it again. Read out the cars options from the CAS or FRM, make sure that $540 is now on the list, hit back (F6) then ensure at the bottom half of the screen tvhe job name = sg_codieren and get coded = a big list of modules. Then hit code car, it should run throught them all saying coding aktiv, then after a couple of minutes coding ended. Then you need to close NCS and use DIS to reset the steering angle sensor.

Okay, After some brainstrorming,i've searched the internet and found out some details: i have talked to the dealer and said that on my E87 manufactured date 09/2004 with my VIN ( JR92631) there is no retrofit kit in the program that he checks. He told me that there are some 116i/2004 that have cruise controll and the reference part is : 61 319 123 043 http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E...45/LHD/N/browse/?search=61319123042&date=true " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Here it says that this part works on E87 and E91 facelift LCI so it seems that there there is not a problem with the parts from LCI on non-LCI models like mine but just a compatibilyty problem. Which replaced 61 319 110 890 http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/61319110890/ " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; works on E87-E87LCI and E91 non LCI Which replaced 61 319 121 894 works on E87 and E91 non LCI Which replaced 61 316 983 583 works on E87 and E91 non LCI Which replaced 61 316 965 295 works on E87 and E91 non LCI Which replaced 61 316 962 679 works JUST on E87 Which replaced 61 316 962 452 No information on the website above(bmwfans.info) Which replaced 61 316 958 300 No information on the website above(bmwfans.info) Which replaced 61 316 956 105 No information on the website above(bmwfans.info) Here, the first code /number (top page) http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref.do?part=61319123042&showeur=on " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; it says that this part works on E87 116i 5 doors, Europe but no info about the year,LCI or NON-LCI,etc. Cand some one help me with some information? 1.Is there a p/n wich works on my car? 2.If so,what is the correct code/codes? 3.??? Thank you in advance! That's kinda odd because

I'vse searched on mobile.de some E87's from september 2004(like mine) and found one with 5+1gearbox and CC. http://www.mobile.de/ro/marc " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;ă/bmw/model/116/vhc:car,pgn:2,pgs:10,srt:year,sro:asc,mke:bmw,mdl:1__bmw_er_series,frn:2004-01,frx:2005-12,ger:manual_gear,crc:true/pg:vipcar/182543479.html So,the hypothesis on the previos post is wrong. Can someone give me some help what p/n should i look for?

hi all, Looking for some help please. i'm in the process off assembling the parts for a cruise retrofit on my mfsw but not auto wipers e81. I have bought a stalk assembly from ebay which came from an e91 touring and has the rear wiper function but i'm having a problem finding the part number on it. the slip ring is 61316989557 which according the realoem is correct but I cant find the cluster number 6139123042 anywhere on it. Have I messed up :? . ok found a PN now and its 61316989563 which is listed as for a 2006 e87 or e91. Anyone know if this still fit my 2010 e81 or are the later cars different?

Buz said: Hi Zooks, Please let me know if this part does work out ok. I've been looking for part number 6139123042 for the best part of a year for my E81 (see http://www.babybmw.net/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=53500 " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false and not had any luck so an alternative option could be useful. I also found the part number on realoem...and always wondered if it was correct. Cheers, Buz. Click to expand...

Am having a nightmare of a headache at attempting this retro fit - and I haven't even got as far as ordering the part yet! I have read all the available posts and guides written by forum members which seem very helpful by the way. I am putting my car's details into realoem and the etk site which is producing part numbers like "61319169758", yet when searching on a certain auction website the part numbers seem to be very different, like for example "9123041 03". Where am I going wrong!?!?! Until today I thought I was quite good with the internet!!

RichCranney

Take the 6131 off the start and lose the 03

Thanks Rich, that second example probably wasn't one of my main problem ones! Some of the listings show "6989557" which doesn't seem to be of any relevance?!

dannymassive said: Thanks Rich, that second example probably wasn't one of my main problem ones! Some of the listings show "6989557" which doesn't seem to be of any relevance?! Click to expand...

Cheers Blakey. Did you have any problems reusing used parts? A garage I called up has said they would need extra £££ if the slip ring had to be virginized so don't know if I'm going to have problems if its vin coded to a previous car.

Never heard that, tomolfc1 did the coding on mine, having seen how I'd be happy to do it if I had a laptop that I cud get to work lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2004 BMW 120d Sport

zooks said: 6989557 is the part number of just the slip ring assembly (clock spring) which usually comes as part of the whole stalks switches etc and is part of a group of componants that makes up the part number of 9123042(manual wipers) or 9123043 (auto wipers) . Try spreading your search to ebay.de too. Its known as a switching centre (schaltzentrum) or cruise(tempomat) in german. Lucky for me i've just bagged a 9123042 on ebay uk. Just need to find someone to code it for me now. Click to expand...

If I can overcome my fear of bricking my car I might get a lead and have a go then. Yes mine has MFSW, rear wiper and manual front wipers. I have p/n 9123042 here and that is the correct part for me.

I lost cruise control functionality. Any suggestions as to what to check next? All fuses are intact and there is power to the connector side of the cruise control module. Thanks for your help.

+1 above and also id like to add, in rare cases I have heard that bad brake light bulb connection on the rear can cause issues with cruise control. I know this is an issue in the E28s and seems to affect some E32s.

Shogun tricks and tips for the E32 series are HERE!
Xalt, Shogun: I get to look at everything mechanical and they're ok. Basing on the schematic diagram, I see all voltages going to the connector that plugs into the cruise control module except pin 3 which is B+ and comes from the shifter position P or N. I did not lose cruise control while the car was moving but it's like today I used it and then tomorrow it's gone and it was that time when I have to drive 800 miles with no cruise control and stiffer than normal gas pedal. way too much exercise for my right foot ... - - - Updated - - - SergeBMW: I didn't have and still don't have a brake lights warning but I'll check them just to make sure. Thanks.

I once had an intermittent cruise control actuator that had a bad solder joint. It would stop working when the engine bay was too hot. Will your cruise sometimes resume working during your 800 mile trip?
E32Fan: It's dead ever since and that's more than a week now. How did you find out that it's the actuator that was bad?
Originally Posted by joleonie E32Fan:How did you find out that it's the actuator that was bad? 12V applied to pins 1 and 4 will turn the gearmotor and you will hear it running, CW or CCW as you like. But nothing happens until 12V is applied to the clutch solenoid at pins 2 and 3. You will hear the snap of the armature, which pushes the gearmotor pinion onto the red capstan gear, which winds the Bowden cable and the coiled spring. Don't force travel past the limits. If these parts work OK then you can check the potentiometer at pins 5, 6, and 8. You can pry off the round black inspection cover and you will see the pinion. No need to open the cover - just look through the inspection hole.

You have a 1990 M30. I do also and I don't have EML. I have two cables together. One going to the gas pedal and one going to the cruise control box. A few years ago my cruise control cable snapped so I replaced them both. Are you sure your problem is nothing more than a broken cable? Click my youtube video below and at the very beginning you'll see both cables.

E32FAN: I will test the motor and clutch of the actuator today and we'll see what happens. I am actually leaning towards electrical problem maybe on the module side. I had this car for the 3rd week now and slowly I am coming across intermittent problems here and there including transmission not shifting to 3rd gear yesterday on city streets, from a stand still on a red light and parking light warning and license plate light warning etc. I love this car. - - - Updated - - - CroughtonE32: I checked the cruise control cable and it is okay but I will check again just to make sure. Thanks.
Update: Cruise control is working again. I tried what E32FAN did to the actuator and it's the clutch that got stuck or something. I tried to energize it and only on the 4th try did I hear a fairly loud click. Took the car for a test drive and confirmed it's working. Thanks for all your help. Much appreciated.
