About boat trips in Cannes

With beaches and coves, impressive cliff edges and turquoise waters, there is no better way to explore the coastline of Cannes than from a boat.

The main ways of doing this are, depending on your budget, to  charter a yacht  or  hire a boat ; or  take a boat trip  with one of the many companies located all around the marinas. The latter is a popular option for being the most cost effective and easy to organise and, of course, you don't need a skipper licence; as they usually offer scheduled departures so you just have to turn up and enjoy your day.

I've been on 50 cruises. Here are 5 things I wish I'd known before sailing in the Mediterranean.

  • I've been on 50 cruises around the world and took my first Mediterranean route last year.
  • Picking the right time of the season to go can make a big difference in your trip.
  • Before packing, I always check to see if any of the experiences I've booked have a dress code.

Insider Today

As someone who's taken over 50 cruises all over the world, I know firsthand how popular cruising is this year. But one seabound itinerary people often forget to add to their bucket lists is a Mediterranean cruise .

The dreamy ships take passengers around European destinations like Spain, France, Italy, and Greece.

After taking my first Mediterranean cruise last year, here's what I think everyone should know before booking the route.

Going early or late in the sailing season means fewer crowds and better weather.

boat tour cannes

Many cruise lines, like Virgin, Celebrity, and Disney, start the Mediterranean season in early spring and sail through early fall.

Going early or late in the season usually means you'll have more tolerable weather and smaller crowds in some of the big destinations like Athens .

I made the mistake of going on my Mediterranean cruise at the end of May (over Memorial Day weekend).

Some ports of call, like Nice, France, were easy to get around, but others like Rome were packed to the gills. I wanted the day to end before we even made it to the Vatican on our tour.

Arriving at your embarkation port early is key to having a smooth sailing.

boat tour cannes

My biggest tip for any cruise — but especially for Americans traveling to Europe for a Mediterranean cruise — is to arrive at your embarkation city at least a day before your sailing starts.

This gives you plenty of time to ensure you make it to the port, especially with the airline delays that typically spike in the summer. The boat isn't going to wait for you i f you don't land on time

Even though it means paying for lodging and likely a few meals before boarding the boat, getting a good night's sleep before a jam-packed vacation is worth it to me.

As a bonus, arriving early also gives you a chance to explore the city.

Be sure to pack at least one shirt with sleeves and bottoms that cover your knees.

boat tour cannes

Some of the major European tourist destinations have strict dress codes — typically everyone must at least cover their shoulders and knees out of respect.

If you're planning on checking out Vatican Ci t y in Italy or the Meteora monasteries in Greece, b e sure to pack at least one outfit that fits the bill.

Most cruise ships have laundry services (self-serve or valet), so you can wear the same dress-code-approved outfit for a few excursion days if needed.

Food tours are a great way to see a city, taste local dishes, and learn some history.

boat tour cannes

If you're looking for a unique excursion that still gives you the highlights of a European city, I recommend booking a food tour . I've done tours in places like Amsterdam, Budapest, and Paris, and I've never been disappointed.

Food tours can be booked through third-party travel operators, like TripAdvisor or Viator, and offer the chance to see some of the major landmarks of a city, try local dishes, and learn some history all in one outing.

The tours are usually led by locals, which means the guides can also give you some good recommendations if you have time before you need to return to the ship.

Consider booking tours through third-party sites.

boat tour cannes

Mediterranean cruises can last anywhere from seven days to two weeks, depending on the company and itinerary. Booking every excursion through the cruise line can add up, but luckily, there are typically more affordable options through third-party companies.

But I only book with third-party operators if the ship docks right at the city I want to explore because I never want to miss the all-aboard time.

For example, on my Mediterranean cruise last summer, the ship anchored at Cannes, and I was able to keep my eye on it throughout my excursion.

If the ship docks in a secondary location and you have to travel to the big tourist destinations , I always book excursions through the cruise line. For instance, the day my family and I explored Rome, the ship docked in Civitavecchia, Italy, and we had to take a two-hour bus ride into the city.

Booking with the cruise company guarantees your return to the ship, even if your excursion runs late.

Cannes Competition Title ‘Grand Tour’ Debuts Trailer, Director Miguel Gomes’ Next Film to Be ‘Savagery’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Grand Tour

Variety has been granted exclusive access to the trailer (below) for Portuguese director Miguel Gomes ‘ “Grand Tour,” which will have its world premiere in Cannes Film Festival’s Competition section. Variety can also exclusively reveal that that distribution on “Grand Tour” will be handled in France by Tandem, and in Italy by Lucky Red, and that Gomes’ next film will be “Savagery.”

Popular on Variety

“Grand Tour” is produced by Uma Pedra No Sapato (Portugal) in co-production with Vivo Film (Italy), Shellac Sud (France) and Cinema Defacto (France), in association with The Match Factory (Germany), Rediance (China) and Creatps Inc. (Japan), and with the participation of ZDF/ARTE and RTP.

Gomes was previously in Cannes in 2015 with “Arabian Nights” and in 2021 with “The Tsugua Diaries.” His 2012 film “Tabu” played at the Berlinale.

Speaking to Variety , the film’s producer Filipa Reis explains how the project came together.

It was over dinner with Reis that Gomes first presented his idea for the film, in which narrative sequences shot in a studio would be intercut with footage of contemporary Asia. “The idea was… I don’t know… very appealing and charming,” says Reis, who was a co-producer on “The Tsugua Diaries.” Gomes then asked her to produce it.

The plan was for Gomes to take a small documentary-style crew to seven Asian countries – Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Japan and China – shooting in 16mm so “that we could build this archive and then to write the script according to what was found,” Reis says.

Once those funds were in place, Gomes shot the narrative sequences in studios in Portugal and Italy in early 2023.

Reis says it was a “challenge” to do the Asia trip without a script, adding “it’s not as it’s meant to be in the industry, but it was also very appealing.” She adds that it required “a risk” to be taken to shoot the archive footage before applying to the production funds.

Asked how working with Gomes compares with working other directors, she says: “He’s very unique. And I think to work with him, you really have to be very confident about what he’s doing, because it can be a proposal that’s a bit outside the box compared with the way you are used to doing things, and the way the funds and the industry thinks things are supposed to be done.”

During the studio shoot they had “links to some rough edit archive footage, so that when you read the script, you could understand at least how [the narrative footage] crossed over with the archive,” she says. The narrative sequences are in Portuguese, except for one character who speaks in French. The archive footage is in the language of the country that the crew were shooting in.

Although the story takes place in Asia during a time of imperial rule in many countries colonialism isn’t the theme, Reis says, in contrast to “Tabu.” “I would say that it’s something new. Of course, ‘Tabu’ is a great film, but I think this one will be surprising,” she says, enigmatically.

As to the tone of “Grand Tour,” Reis says that it contains both comedy and tragedy, “but it is also melancholic, and it is courageous.” She adds: “I think it has a lot of emotional elements for us to make a connection with it.”

The film was finished in October, and shown to Cannes in November. A world premiere at Cannes was always “Plan A,” Reis says, adding: “I feel as a producer that it’s where the film is supposed to be, and where Miguel is supposed to be.”

At present no preview screenings are planned, although that may change, and Gomes isn’t doing press interviews before the world premiere. “We would like it if the film was discovered by everyone at the same time,” Reis says. “I’m a bit anxious to see how it will be received, and we are very curious about that. So it would be nice if we could make a surprise and share our enthusiasm and our surprise with the audience.”

Reis says that her next project as a producer will be Gomes’ Brazilian-set film “Savagery,” which will be co-produced by Tatiana Leite in Brazil. Further details about the project will be released at a later date.

Vote up the best popcorn pics to come out of the prestigious festival.

The Cannes Film Festival's coveted Palme d’Or remains one of the entertainment industry’s highest honors. Usually presented to landmark cinematic achievements, the award has been given to many of the greatest films in history , marking them as revolutionary pieces of cinema that have altered the industry through their unique vision and voice.

Of the 60-plus films that have been bestowed the honor of Palme d’Or, only a handful have been in the English language. Here are the best English-language films to ever win the Palme d'Or. Please vote up your favorites.

Taxi Driver

Taxi Driver

Martin Scorsese's psychological thriller about the crippling effects of urban isolation and mental illness, sold through a riveting performance by Robert De Niro as unhinged taxi driver Travis Bickle, is a dark reflection on the ills of society and the evils that inhabit it. Bickle's emotional instability is at first ignored by his fellow denizens, then celebrated after his impulse to act on his most violent tendencies accidentally makes him a hero when he saves child prostitute Iris (Jodie Foster).

When the film won the Palme d'Or, it was a controversial decision that had Cannes audience booing . The graphic nature of the film and its violence was not received well by most, especially because the festival had experienced a bomb scare the prior year. Festivalgoers and audiences were not thrilled with the film's violence because many felt it hit too close to home.

M*A*S*H

Robert Altman's ironic slice-of-wartime comedy based on Richard Hooker's novel of the same name was a breakthrough in filmmaking thanks to how it dealt with the uncomfortable truths about war: using side-splitting humor while confronting with the worst side of humankind. More a series of vignettes than a film with a fixed plot, the story features the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital and its colorful cast of surgeons and doctors, including Capt. Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland), Capt. John "Trapper John" McIntyre (Elliott Gould), and Capt. Augustus "Duke" Forrest (Tom Skerritt), our heroes. The lunatic trio delight in creating chaos and mischief within the Army unit as a way to cope with the horrors they deal with daily as doctors.

As a film, M*A*S*H is credited as an early prototype of the mumblecore genre due to its overlying dialogue, and is considered one of the finest American comedies ever made. Its unique take on the war genre allowed it to win the Palme d'Or at Cannes, as well as become a timeless classic.

Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction

When Miramax opted to take a chance on a strange story about a hitman, a boxer, a gangster, and his wife with the audiences of the French Riveria, it was a big swing. But when Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction made its debut at Cannes in 1994, the film's hardboiled approach to storytelling , mixing pop culture-laden dialogue with ultra-violence, brought novice filmmaker Tarantino acclaim and won the pic the festival's top prize over the favorite, Three Colors: Red.

Though the film did earn a small number of boos and hisses due to its win over Krzysztof Kieślowski's acclaimed continuation in his trilogy, Pulp Fiction would go on to forever change the landscape of filmmaking and screenwriting due to its savvy dialogue and nonlinear storytelling structure.

Triangle of Sadness

Triangle of Sadness

In this scathing and hilarious “eat the rich” satire, a bunch of elite passengers on a pleasure cruise have their world turned upside down when their bourgeois boat ride quickly becomes a journey into hell. After terrible weather and pirates sink their vessel, the pampered and spoiled passengers need to depend on their serving staff for their very survival. It doesn't take long before the former domestics become the dominant class while setting up camp on a deserted island.

When Triangle of Sadness premiered at Cannes, it received an eight-minute standing ovation from a delighted audience.

Dancer in the Dark

Dancer in the Dark

Part of Lars Von Trier's Golden Heart Trilogy, Dancer in the Dark is the sad, surreal musical of factory worker Selma (pop singer Bjork), a Czech immigrant with a degenerative eye disease who spends her time daydreaming that her life is a musical. In reality, she lives in abject poverty while her son suffers from the same degenerative disease, causing him to slowly go blind. Selman saves for his operation, but her landlord steals her money and she accidentally shoots him during an altercation. She must face a choice of paying a lawyer to help her go free, or face the death penalty but have the money to save her son's sight.

The film won top honors at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as best actress for the Icelandic singing sensation.

Apocalypse Now

Apocalypse Now

Francis Ford Coppola's tour de force reimagining of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness made its way to the Cannes Film Festival in 1979, where it screened as a work in progress . The epic tale of Captain Benjamin L. Willard's (Martin Sheen) mission to “terminate the command of U.S. Army Special Forces Colonel Walter E. Kurtz” (Marlon Brando) was deemed controversial when it debuted at the fest; it was met with mixed reviews despite being unfinished.

According to some sources, the film split the jury, who deliberated most of the night, ultimately deciding to give the Palme d'Oh to both Apocalypse Now and Volker Schlöndorff's The Tin Drum.

All That Jazz

All That Jazz

Bob Fosse's semi-autobiographical satirical fantasy about his own complex life as a terrible husband, a loving father, a genius choreographer, a womanizing Lothario, and a successful Hollywood and Broadway director is told through the character of Joe Gideon, played by Roy Scheider. Gideon attempts to edit his movie while concurrently getting his Broadway production off the ground, and slowly works his way into an early grave as his steady intake of wine, women, song, and pills takes its toll on his health.

A daring and dashing look at how the id and the ego can lead a person down roads of success, despair, and death, Fosse's All That Jazz is a brilliant send-up of the behind-the-scenes look at the cinematic process and the creatives who sacrifice everything to bring their vision to life.

In 1980, All That Jazz tied for the Palme d’Or with Akira Kurosawa’s  Kagemusha .

The Pianist

The Pianist

Roman Polanski's gut-wrenching story of survival follows Władysław Szpilman (Adrien Brody), a Polish-Jewish pianist whose skills as a pianist help him survive the Nazi occupation of Poland and the Holocaust. After losing his family, his home, and everything he held dear, Szpilman survives the destruction of Warsaw, the Soviet offensive, and the many horrors of WWII from the epicenter of the conflict.

Szpilman is constantly hiding, starving, and on the brink of death more than once, and his persistence creates a harrowing tale that stays with audiences long after the credits are done rolling. The film won the Palme d'Or in 2002.

Wild at Heart

Wild at Heart

David Lynch's fierce, ferocious, and fiery love story of Sailor and Lula is a sultry, sometimes savage road trip tale about two lovers looking for adventure but unable to escape their demons. Well, one demon in particular: Lula's batty mama and the strange assortment of assassins she hired to take out Sailor. Featuring the uber-acting style of Nicolas Cage as the Elvis-loving Sailor and Laura Dern as his metal-loving, ever-devoted main squeeze, the film features the two on a wild journey across America as they try to outrun a bevy of characters.

When Wild at Heart won the Palme d'Or at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival, it earned a fair share of jeers and cheers from audiences, who were split due to the hyper violence of the film.

sex, lies, and videotape

In 1989, Steven Soderbergh's small indie film sex, lies, and videotape created tsunami-size waves in the entertainment industry as the little movie that could would go on to win massive awards at several key festivals , as well as become a box-office earner, and changed the way studios and execs looked an independent films. The story of a man, his wife, her sister, and the man's friend with specific fetishes was an experiment into voyeurism as it explored the intricacies of adult relationships made difficult by deception and pretense.

The film won not only the 1989 the Palme d'Or, but also the FIPRESCI Prize and best actor for James Spader. Its success reinvigorated the indie film industry, which was faltering at the time. Today it is considered one of the greatest independent films ever made.

Fahrenheit 9/11

Fahrenheit 9/11

Michael Moore's satirical documentary about the the aftermath of the September 11 attacks and the Iraq War was an eye-opening look at both American politics and news as it was filtered through the lense of the popular media, pop culture, and politicians. Using humor to drive home certain points while making use of investigative reporting to guide audiences to their own conclusions, Moore makes harsh points about American society after the attacks.

After its premiere at Cannes , the film received a near 20-minute standing ovation. Moore was presented the Palme d'Or by Quentin Tarantino.

Secrets & Lies

This ensemble drama about members of a dysfunctional family who keep each other at arm's length is a stunning slice-of-life character study created by visionary filmmaker Mike Leigh. The film follows Hortense (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), a well-to-do Black optometrist from London, as she searches for her birth mother, only to discover that her biological parent is a working-class white woman, Cynthia (Brenda Blethyn). Though initially off to a rocky start, the two develop a friendship as Cynthia becomes close to Hortense.

Wim Wenders's tale of a missing man returning home after a long absence is a story of forgiveness in this odd character study set in the American Southwest. The tale of amnesiac Travis Henderson (Harry Dean Stanton) and his return home, his reunion with his family, and their reception to his sudden reappearance in their life offers a unique take on the “prodigal son” trope that allows each actor to fully explore their character.

In 1984, Paris, Texas took home the Palme d'Or from the Cannes jury, as well as the FIPRESCI Prize and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury.

Barton Fink

Barton Fink

The Coen brothers' surreal exploration of the life of an artist in this offbeat black comedy pokes fun at the entertainment industry while merging genres to create a complex portrait of a man on the brink of a nervous breakdown. Starring John Turturro as the befuddled playwright-turned-scriptwriter, the satirical tale is jampacked with the brothers' trademark dark sense of humor and quirky characters as it follows poor Fink while he struggles with writer's block.

In 1991, Barton Fink was a triumph at Cannes , pulling off a rare sweep when it won the Palme d'Or, best director, and best actor for Turturro.

Jane Campion's haunting historical drama is about a mute Scottish woman, Ada (Holly Hunter), sold into marriage by her father to a man she never met (Sam Neill) who lives in rural New Zealand. With only her daughter Flora (Anna Paquin) and her beloved piano to give her comfort, she attempts to settle within the small community, but soon discovers new passions with her neighbor George (Harvey Keitel).

if....

Directed by Lindsay Anderson, this satirical drama follows a group of students as they stage a violent insurrection at their boarding school due to a power imbalance between slightly sadistic students and the teachers who supported them. Using a school setting to make a statement about class and privilege, the film expertly employs surrealism during some of the darker moments to help handle the subject matter, keeping it from become too horrific while still morbid and a bit cheeky.

Elephant
