Budapest Luxury & Bespoke Vacations
Dazzling late 19th-century architecture, incredible history, thermal-spa moments and a sizzling nightlife encapsulate all that is Budapest.
In a word, grand. This summarizes the feel of the Budapest travel experience, a glorious amalgamation of historic significance and modern merriment. The fabled Danube River both separates and links the two parts of the city, with Buda being the more quiet and residential side and Pest well-known as the place to hang out. You will get most of your sightseeing done on the Buda side, the hilly part, with the regal Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion
and 13th-century Matthias Church leading the pack. Take the funicular up Castle Hill to Buda’s Old Town, but stop first at the Budapest History Museum, which documents the city’s rough and tumble past back to the Roman era. Gellert Baths and Rudas Baths supply the spa rejuvenation here – this is definitely the more soothing side of town. The flatter Pest takes up more of the city space, about two-thirds. And while this is where
you’ll do most of your shopping, dining and dancing, Pest is not without its icons, including the Opera House, Heroes’ Square, Vajdahunyad Castle and St. Stephen’s Basilica. The Parliament Buildings are a trademark, postcard-perfect sight, particularly at night. Your luxury travel time in Budapest wouldn’t be complete without a private boat tour down the Danube – just so you can hum along to the waltz – which a local guide will be more than eager to arrange.

The best hotels in Budapest
By Jonathan Wiggin
Forget the “Little Paris ” moniker that has haunted Budapest for decades. The majestic capital of Hungary, from the wooded and sedate hills of Buda with its old town and royal castle, to the buzzing ruin bars, grand palaces and shopping streets of downtown Pest across the broad Danube that divides the city, is so much more than just another pretty central European city. Here contemporary cool and old-school grandeur mix effortlessly, and all with a distinctly Hungarian flavour. To use another tired phrase, here there is something for everyone, whether you want to admire the most astonishing art nouveau and secessionist architecture in Europe, party all night at a grand 19th-century thermal bath, sip cocktails on a rooftop bar or eat dinner while cruising down the moonlit Danube. And with several exceptional hotels opened in the last couple of years, you may just find yourself falling in love.
What is the best part of Budapest to stay in?
While the Buda side of the Danube may be the smartest part of town for wealthy residents looking for peace and quiet, Pest is where the action is and is packed with historical buildings and great places to eat, drink, shop and stroll, and this selection of the best new openings and old classics for you to lay your head down to rest in concentrates on the central Pest districts, where reaching the central landmarks is easy.
Of all the hotels on this list, the Corinthia is the only one, bar the Kempinski, that began its existence as a hotel. The Grand Hotel Royal Budapest, as it was called, in its heyday of the early 20th century, hosted stars such as Josephine Baker, who performed in the hotel’s Orfeum cabaret. It has served more recently as the inspiration for Wes Anderson’s Oscar-winning The Grand Budapest Hotel. A vast establishment created from three adjacent 19th-century buildings with the original side streets between them transformed into lofty glassed atriums, the Corinthia is perhaps most famed for its beautifully restored Royal Spa. The spa was originally opened in 1888 and was saved from the ignominious fate of being converted into a multi-storey car park. Guests can swim or bask in saunas and hot tubs surrounded by columns and period tilework. Equally impressive is the huge cream and gilded ballroom, once the venue of Budapest’s first cinema. For gourmets, the hotel has two fine-dining restaurants.
Price: Standard doubles start from about £165.
Address: Budapest, Erzsébet krt. 43-49, 1073 Hungary
W Budapest is an exploration of duality. Housed in the Drechsler Palace, a building designed by architects Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos and previously home to the headquarters of the Hungarian State Ballet Academy, this is a hotel that firmly modernises the W brand while drawing deep influence from Hungary's past. A chessboard theme runs through the interior design, a homage to the city's national pastime: black-and-white tiles decorate every bathroom and elevator, and the two most splendid suites – the all-black Extreme WOW suite and all-white WOW suite – call back to both sides of the board, as well as the duelling black and white swans from Swan Lake. The Extreme WOW suite also houses a sculptural chessboard designed by artist Ronan Mckenzie, so you can practise your game while exploring the shops of glamorous Andrássy Avenue. Downstairs, the Away Spa is a veritable hall of mirrors inspired by Houdini's great illusions, and even a contortionist's sore muscles would be soothed by the clever massages. In the evening, enjoy refined Asian dishes at Nightingale by Beefbar, and then head down to Society25 for a nightcap. A speakeasy-style basement bar accessed through a bathroom mirror, it serves up a selection of intriguing cocktails, each inspired by the city's history: the Brew Bop is a coffee martini inspired by Budapest's 19th-century café culture, and the fun, frothy Strawberry Plié harks back to the era when trainee dancers rather than travellers roamed these halls. Matild Palace
One of a matching pair of neo-baroque fin de siècle palaces built on the orders of Princess Clotilde of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the wife of Archduke Joseph Karl, and protected by UNESCO , the Matild Palace, which opened in 2021, is an exceptional addition to the Budapest hotel scene that marries award-winning contemporary design with beautifully restored heritage elements. Home to the first Spago restaurant by Wolfgang Puck in Europe, already recommended for a Michelin star, the Matild also features a rooftop bar with panoramic views, and its beautiful galleried, art nouveau café offers seasonal cabaret performances and a fabulous Sunday brunch with live music and bottomless Champagne. Rooms have soaring four-metre ceilings, herringbone parquet flooring and contemporary furnishings that combine sumptuous bursts of rich colour with high taste. For a unique experience book the extraordinary three-storey tower suite, with 360-degree views of Budapest and the Danube that will stay with you.
Price: Standard doubles start from about £390.
Address: Budapest, Váci u 36, 1056 Hungary
Párisi Udvar Hotel Budapest
An expression of the golden age of early-20th century Budapest in stained glass, ceramics and endlessly intricate patterns and sculptural details, the vertiginous and breath-taking atrium of the Párisi Udvar or “Parisian Court” is a masterpiece of art nouveau extravagance that was reopened to the public as a luxury hotel in 2019 after over 85,000 hours of painstaking restoration work. Rooms are a model of restrained modern elegance mixed with classical lines, where cool colours provide respite from the riot of detail of the historic building’s public areas. In the evening, the ÉTOILE Champagne bar offers over 50 bottles, with 20 available by the glass, and when you are suitably infused with bubbles, the Párisi Passage Restaurant offers delicious Hungarian and international classics with wine pairings. Or, for the more adventurous, just step outside to find yourself in the very centre of Budapest’s pedestrian central shopping and tourist district.
Price: Standard doubles start from about £385.
Address: Budapest, Petőfi Sándor u. 2-4, 1052 Hungary
Kozmo Hotel Suites & Spa
The Kozmo, which opened in 2021 in what was in the 1920s Europe’s second-largest telecommunications centre, is a hit for lovers of contemporary design. On a leafy square just outside Budapest’s Palace District and within walking distance of the Dohány Street Synagogue and Great Market Hall, behind the hotel’s façade with its original 1920s monumental sculptural reliefs, guests discover a contemporary haven of spacious, beautifully designed spaces. The tallest building in the area, expansive terraces furnished with sofas to sprawl on offer panoramic views of the tiled rooftops of Budapest from the hotel’s many suites, where glass, black metal and crisp whites, greys and cool blues are married with warm parquet floors and toe-warming, thick cream rugs. The stylish bar is a relaxing spot for an evening cocktail before heading out to the elegant courtyard bistro, which provides a peaceful haven for delicious dinners.
Price: Standard doubles start from about £180.
Address: Budapest, Horváth Mihály tér 17, 1082 Hungary
Aria Hotel Budapest
Just 100 metres from the towering cupola of St Stephen's Basilica and arranged around a glass-roofed 19th-century courtyard, the Aria Hotel is hands-down the place for music-lovers in Budapest. Placido Domingo, Lennie Kravitz and Rita Ora are amongst those who have enjoyed the hotel’s music-inspired hospitality, and the walls of the Mirror Bar are covered in the signatures of other famous musical guests. The four musically themed wings contain 49 rooms, either with private terraces onto the courtyard, or views onto the elegant surrounding streets. Each room is inspired by an individual composer or musician, decorated with fabulous original art by Czech caricaturist Josef Blecha, and has its own marble fireplace, with décor ranging from the voluptuous and extravagant purples of the opera wing to the more restrained palette and lines of the classical wing. After a day of sightseeing guests can unwind each day from 4-6pm over complimentary cheese and wine in the courtyard, which from Thursday to Sunday is accompanied by live music from the best local performing artists.
Price: Standard doubles start from about £300.
Address: Budapest, Hercegprímás u. 5, 1051 Hungary
Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest
Named for the founder of London’s Royal Exchange and originally built for the London-based Gresham Life Assurance Company as their headquarters, the Gresham Palace is the hotel that set and continues to maintain the gold standard for the restoration and conversion of historical Budapest buildings into luxury hotels. Opened in 2004 after a $110M restoration and considered one of the finest examples of art nouveau architecture worldwide, the hotel occupies an enviable position by the landmark Chain Bridge, with views from rooms of the Danube and the Buda hills, old town, and castle beyond. A repeated motif of the building’s interiors is a love-heart, reputedly because the original designer was in love when he created his masterpiece; and this love is reflected in the attention to detail of the modern-day hotel, from the exquisite Múzsa cocktail bar to the refined and elegant rooms and suites.
Price: Standard doubles start from about £560.
Address: Budapest, Széchenyi István tér 5-6, 1051 Hungary
Kempinski Hotel Corvinus
Among the first international luxury hotels to open in Budapest, the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus celebrated 30 years last year, and a testament to its appeal are the many staff members who have been there since its debut. Unlike newer hotels that have made their home in exquisitely restored period buildings, the Kempinski is purpose-built, but its curving interior shapes, filled with the hotel’s Hungarian art collection, still feel contemporary, while the luxurious spa has just undergone a complete redesign and will be offering a new menu of treatments from this autumn. For dining, guests can choose from the hotel’s signature ÉS Bisztró for Hungarian classics and specialities from the grill, Asian fusion from Nobu or four more restaurants, bars, and cafes, while Budapest’s iconic shopping street, Fashion Street, is just a step away. Recently renovated rooms with cool, contemporary colours and brass, gold, and rich wood accents look out onto the Budapest Eye and, beyond it, the dome of St. Stephen’s Basilica.
Price: Standard doubles start from £200.
Address: Budapest, Erzsébet tér 7-8, 1051 Hungary
Anantara New York Palace
Just across the boulevard ring from the buzzing party district, muscular stone atlases support the grand entrance porch from Budapest’s busy downtown, leading, via a circular lobby of honey-coloured columns, into the cool, calm, classical harmony of the five-storey collonaded white-marble-paved courtyard that the New York Palace is centred about. A gem of the Budapest Belle Époque, the hotel is best known for the fabulous excess of rococo columns, chandeliers and frescoed ceilings that is its New York Café, where guests can enjoy a truly exceptional breakfast in a private section of what is often called the most beautiful café in the world. Rooms are comfortable and well-appointed, and in the hotel’s brand-new spa, guests can enjoy massages, saunas and a 15-metre pool in an ambience with echoes of the whitewashed walls of the Greek archipelago, while the White Salon restaurant offers dining in an elegant white and gold gallery set high overlooking the riotous splendour of the New York Café.
Price: Standard doubles start from about £240.

The Ritz Carlton
Facing the pretty Erzsébet Square in the buzzing centre of downtown and built during WWI to house an insurance company and luxury apartments, and subsequently the headquarters of the Budapest police, the Ritz-Carlton had a ten-year stint as Le Méridien Budapest until being reborn as the Ritz-Carlton in 2016. Comfortable rooms with clean, contemporary styling in crisp whites, cool blues and greys and a swimmable indoor pool offer a pleasant sanctuary from the buzzing downtown location. Breakfast is taken under a soaring circular stained-glass cupola, while the keenly priced Ottimo restaurant, with its tan leather banquettes and mirrored columns, serves a selection of Italian cuisine and a delicious grilled balsamic marinated octopus that makes you doubt that you are in a landlocked country.
Price: Standard doubles start from about £250.
Address: Budapest, Erzsébet tér 9-10, 1051 Hungary
Verno House
Part of the Hungarian luxury hotel group, Botaniq Collection, and a notable addition to the boutique hotel scene in Budapest, Verno House opened last December in an elegant 19th-century building facing the leafy avenues and grand buildings of the Liberty Square Park, and just a two-minute walk from the iconic Hungarian Parliament building. Previously an Iberostar, the hotel has undergone a total rebirth. Luxurious yet laid-back, rooms in a soothing natural palette of soothing forest greens, ochre and earth tones are punctuated with photography commissioned from Zoltán Tombor, and feature floor-to-ceiling windows, glass-walled bathrooms with freestanding tubs, and comfy, Nordic-flavoured contemporary furnishings. In the basement, a giant red-lit jacuzzi feels like the underground launch-pad in a James Bond villain’s lair, while the excellent Flava restaurant, with its tranquil terrace bordering the park, offers an imaginative fusion menu of North African, Latin American and Middle Eastern-inspired dishes, delicious cocktails and chilled beat-driven tunes from a resident DJ at the weekends.
Price: Standard doubles start from about £210.

Introduction: Why Budapest is Perfect for a Luxury Holiday
For a long time, Budapest was one of the best-kept secrets in central Europe. Backpackers looking for cheap and hostels flocked to the city. Experienced “in the know” travelers raved about Budapest.
In the last decade or so, that’s all changed: Budapest is no longer just for backpackers, and it’s no longer a secret. While it’s still not as busy as nearby Prague or Vienna, the secret is out.
And as it turns out, luxury travelers LOVE Budapest.
Hungarian wine – with its nearly-incomprehensible 22 wine regions – is a fantastic value. The city is full of cultural treasures and upscale nightlife . High-end international and Hungarian brands make Budapest an excellent stop for a shopping trip. And the city’s restaurant scene is exploding.
Add to that, Budapest is filling up with gorgeous luxury and upscale boutique properties.
If you want to stay in one of the best Budapest 5 star hotels, we’ve done the research for you. In this article, we compare 16 5-star Budapest hotels. We also compare 7 deluxe hotels in Budapest. These are hotels that have a gorgeous, boutique vibe to them, despite a 4 star hotel rating.
Consider this an overview post to save you time. We’ve summarize the best features of each property. And we’ve done our best to present it in a way that’s easy to digest. Hopefully, it makes it easy to choose one of the best 5 star hotels in Budapest for your own trip.
We hope this round-up of the top hotels in Budapest helps you with your trip planning. And we hope it helps you find the best option for your holiday in Budapest.

Review: Aria Hotel Budapest
popular post today
Located In Hungary
Budapest is the capital of Hungary. Its 19th-century Chain Bridge over the River Danube connects the hilly Buda district with flat Pest. This beautiful city has loads of fun history to explore, like the funicular that runs up Castle Hill to Buda’s Old Town, where the Budapest History Museum traces city life from Roman times onward.
Although there is a Ritz-Carlton , a Four Seasons , and a Kempinski in Budapest, consider the Aria Hotel. It is a less well-known luxury hotel with the most “Budapest” atmosphere of any hotel in the city.
You can fly on British Airways directly into Budapest from London Heathrow.
The wonderful, intimate boutique hotel Aria Hotel Budapest is situated in the heart of Budapest, steps from the main street.
This exquisite hotel is perfectly located in a pedestrian-friendly area, complete with delightful shops, restaurants, and captivating attractions. Moreover, it’s just a stone’s throw away from the serene Danube River and the iconic Chain Bridge, making it an ideal base for exploring the city.
Its lavish interiors are hidden up a side street, which means that you only find it if you know what you are looking for. That said, it tops TripAdvisor, as the readers choice “No 1 Hotel in the world”, so it is not a secret anymore.
Style & Character
The entire hotel is inspired by music, and the lobby has a welcoming vibe. The scale throughout the hotel is intimate and inviting, and the musician-themed decorating is inspiring. A major hit with guests is the complimentary cheese and wine accompanied by live music, which flows generously each afternoon.
There are four wings in the hotel, each dedicated to one of four major genres of music: Classical, Opera, Contemporary, and Jazz. Each room and suite features caricatures by internationally acclaimed artist Joseph Blecha to celebrate the world’s greatest musical legends.
These charming artworks pay tribute to some of the world’s most legendary musical figures, including luminaries like Maria Callas, Count Basie, Bob Dylan, James Brown, and Hungary’s very own Franz Liszt.
Facilities & Dining
The lobby, library adjoining bars, and restaurant areas are ultra stylish. Breakfast here is excellent and is served in the Music Garden. At night, you can enjoy fine dining at Cafe Liszt, while the rooftop High Note SkyBar is an absolute highlight of the hotel, offering wonderful cocktails and bar food against the backdrop of the surrounding rooftops and the historic Basilica.
All the rooms have lots of fun features, including iPads to use within the hotel, a Nespresso coffee machine, and Molton Brown amenities. The rooms have been well designed with lots of useful sockets to charge devices and a large flat-screen TV with music and movies as well as standard channels.
Room Tip: Request a street-facing balcony, as it is delightful to open the French doors and have the sun stream in.
The hotel has four sections, each with its own elevator, which means you are never more than a few steps from your room. Classic Wing rooms are beautifully furnished in a classic style with Neo-Baroque style furnishings, which have been modernized with streamlined forms and colors. Some rooms have terraces that are delightful in summer.
Jazz Wing rooms are inspired by the ambiance of a 1920s jazz club, with spotlights and polished chrome trunk-style writing tables. The edgy roughness of hard floors is mixed with exposed brick ceilings and accent walls, which were created using the original brick from the historic 19th-century building.
Opera Wing rooms exude elegance. Neo-Baroque furnishings have been modernized with cool shades of grey and sensuous shades of lilac and orchid. Beautiful Murano Venetian glass chandeliers, tufted velvet headboards, and historical musical instrument sketches complete the look.
Finally, the Contemporary Wing is inspired by the Pop Art style of the 1970s. Bold colors and whimsical elements that include custom-made headboards create an ambiance that’s both fun and funky.
The hotel also offers free high-speed wifi throughout; complimentary bottled spring water; complimentary multi-media library; Molton Brown amenities; in-room iPad; free use of the Harmony Spa heated pool, steam, sauna, Jacuzzi, aqua bicycles, and fitness room; complimentary selection of International newspapers and a yummy fine chocolate turndown service too!
Service & Facilities
There is also a small exercise room, a hot tub, a stylish musically themed pool, a steam room, and a sauna, along with a spa for pampering treatments.
Food & Drink
In terms of dining, the hotel features the High Note SkyBar, serving refreshing cocktails, delicious bar snacks, dinners, and a truly gorgeous panorama of Budapest. Café Liszt bar, lounge, and terrace offer Hungarian and light international dishes and cocktails, coffees, and macarons. Finally, The Music Garden is a stunning glass-enclosed courtyard in the hotel’s heart, where guests and non-residents can enjoy cocktails and refreshments while listening to musical entertainment.
Whether you are staying here or not, the view from the Skybar is exceptional, and you must spend an evening there with a cocktail.

ELLE Escapes: Budapest
In the summer, you can soak in the outdoor baths (there are many indoor options too); and during the holidays, you might swing by the Christmas markets in the town squares. Stop by Nanushka to shop while sipping on coffee, or if you prefer something stronger, step into one of the many bars for pálinka, Hungary’s national fruit-based spirit. The sights are aplenty, from the Buda Castle to the Chain Bridge, the Parliament Building, and even the Corinthia , which Wes Anderson visited as research for The Grand Budapest Hotel . Below, find a few more suggestions for how to pass the time during your trip.
What to See
The hungarian state opera house.
The Hungarian State Opera House just reopened in 2022 after renovations, but it’s over 130 years old. Come to this renowned venue for performances from Hungarian and international vocalists; the Hungarian National Ballet, the only classical ballet company in the country; and the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra, the oldest in Hungary. As you head in, you’ll get a sense of the institution’s rich history from the building and its Neo-Renaissance design. Everything from the sculpture-lined limestone facade, to the grand staircase, to the resplendent three-story auditorium is magnificent. If you can’t make it to a show, even just a tour of the place is worth it.
Dunarama Sightseeing Cruise
Budapest is a fairly walkable city, and the public transportation is easy to use (especially if you have the BudapestGO app ), but if you want to take in the sights from a different POV, might I suggest a boat cruise on the Danube? If the weather’s nice, you can sip on champagne at sunset and get clear views of both the Buda and Pest sides of the city. Head under the Chain bridge and pass by landmarks like the Parliament building and Gellért Hill.
Gellért Thermal Bath
Gellért Thermal Bath first opened in 1918, and is comprised of indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, steam rooms, and various spa treatments. It incorporates water from hot springs on-site, which are said to have a myriad of medicinal benefits. One of the more popular baths in the city, it’s frequented by travelers, and it’s easy to see why with its Art Nouveau architecture, stained glass accents, mosaic tiles, and overall regal feel. You’ll want to soak for hours.

Where to eat.
Ever since its opening in 1914, Déryné has prided itself on serving the local community. (Today, drawings of neighborhood dogs are featured throughout the wine list.) Now, this beloved spot in Buda attracts both new and familiar faces. The vibe is chic yet homey; you’ll find crates of fruits and vegetables lining the bar, daily newspapers hanging on clipboards, vinyl records on display, and collections of framed photographs and books to peruse. Come by for breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee, or drinks; or enjoy the weekly Sunday brunch party. If it’s on the menu, get the Katsu Milanese, the restaurant’s take on schnitzel, and Túrógombóc for dessert, a spin on the sweet Hungarian cottage cheese dumplings. You also can’t go wrong with oysters, steak, and wine. And if you can’t stay for a full meal, grab some fresh house-made bread from the bakery right outside.
Felix Kitchen & Bar
Felix overlooks the Danube in what was once the Várkert Kiosk, which apparently used to pump water to the Royal Palace. Today, it’s a fine dining establishment that offers a blend of Hungarian and international dishes (including wagyu beef, guacamole with pico de gallo, and mango sticky rice), courtesy of executive chef Dániel Katona. There’s an array of caviar, seafood, and grilled meats to choose from, but as for drinks, well, there are 200 liquors and about 500 types of wine.
At this bistro , located just a few blocks from St. Stephen’s Basilica, the flavors are as vibrant as the blue and gold mosaic interiors. The menu changes year-round, but the rotisserie chicken, slow-roasted and topped with a swirl of sauces and spices, remains Hilda’s signature dish. Even classic plates like goulash are tasty, and máglyarakás (Hungarian bread pudding), made with brioche here, is highly recommended.

Where to drink.
This underground speakeasy is tucked beneath the W Hotel, boasting a sophisticated ambiance with its rich emerald walls, gold detailing, and pointed arches. It’s the perfect place for a nightcap, especially if you opt for one of the bar’s eight custom cocktails honoring Budapest’s history: like the Kaleidoscope, with Roku gin, rhubarb, and grapefruit cordial; the coffee-infused Brew Bop, which pays tribute to the city’s historic coffee houses; or the Geranium (pictured), with Irsai Olivér white wine, St. Germain, homemade lavender syrup, lemon juice, and egg white. Cheers to head bartender Stefano Ripiccini.
Béla is a cozy café and bar located in a more residential area on the Buda side of the city. The eclectic furnishings and murals give the space a warm, welcoming charm, and there are even places to sit upstairs or outside during warmer temperatures. Grab a glass of wine or beer, or a cocktail, or even a full meal while you’re at it. The Negroni is a popular pick, but so is Silence, Bela’s secret drink which combines rum, green tea, cherry blossom bitters, and lime. Sometimes you can enjoy live music there, too.
Perched atop Hotel Rum, just a few stories above its Michelin-starred sister restaurant Salt, Solid offers incredible views of the city. You can stop here for breakfast/brunch (the grilled sausages are fantastic) and dinner, but its wine selection is extensive, with varieties from Hungary and elsewhere across Europe. Sip on a couple glasses while you take in the view.

Where to stay.
This W location is all about embracing duality—historic but hip, elegant yet edgy, classy and cool. It blends the hotel brand’s signature bold design with a storied setting, the Drechsler Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site that was once home to the Hungarian State Ballet Academy. Within the 151 rooms and suites, in the airy glass-covered courtyard, and elsewhere throughout the hotel, you’ll find stained glass, intricate tiling, vibrant blue and green color palettes, and checkerboard patterns, in honor of Budapest’s love of chess. In fact, much of the thoughtful design behind this long-awaited renovation is a tribute to the Hungarian capital and its icons, like the Széchenyi Baths, Harry Houdini, and Zsa Zsa Gabor, according to interior designers Bowler James Brindley and Bánáti + Hartvig. Guests can unwind at the AWAY Spa, go shopping on Andrassy Avenue, or enjoy a night at the opera, right across the street. And you must share a meal at Nightingale by Beefbar , featuring Asian-inspired cuisine from chef Fabio Polidori.
Matild Palace
Another UNESCO World Heritagesite-turned luxury stay is Matild Palace , which was originally built in 1902, with Princess Maria Klotild of Saxe Coburg and Gotha as its patron. After a recent five-year renovation, it reopened in 2021 as a 130-room hotel that still echoes its royal origins through ornate and classic details, paired with touches of local Hungarian design. (Wait until you see the marble and gold walls in the bathroom of the presidential suite.) The site also contains a spa, Wolfgang Puck’s Spago restaurant, a café inspired by the Belle Époque era, and the Duchess rooftop overlooking the Danube and Elisabeth Bridge. Fun fact: The first elevator system installed in Hungary lies right in this building, and it still works.
Dorothea Hotel
This new hotel, just a few blocks in from the river, is actually three buildings in one. But the design embraces that contrast and mix of aesthetics throughout the building; portraits from the National Gallery are printed on doors; the sleek, modern atrium rooms face the inner garden and restaurant, while heritage rooms, fashioned like classic European apartments, look toward the street. (There are no bad views here.) The Pavilion Restaurant & Bar is definitely a highlight, feeling like an oasis with its water features and lush greenery and herbs. If you’re lucky enough to score the penthouse at this property, you’ll have panoramic views of the city and a hot tub (on the balcony) at your disposal. Be sure to stop by the 650-square-meter spa while you’re here.

After an indulgent day of soaking in a thermal bath, no one likes to leave feeling like a prune. Mara’s Sea Sculpt Body Oil is silky-smooth and restores moisture via algae, squalane, and moringa. Plus, it smells as heavenly as the spa you’ve just spent hours in.
Nette La Forêt Eau de Parfum
La Forêt by Nette makes you feel like the star of your own jet-setting rom-com. Allow cedarwood, sandalwood, and bergamot to provide the fragrant backdrop of your Budapest excursions.

This Grand Budapest Palace Has Been Transformed Into a Modern Luxury Hotel
The Matlid Palace has been given a new life as the newest hotel in Marriott's Luxury Collection.
A UNESCO World Heritage site in Budapest is reopening as a luxurious hotel after a five-year renovation.
Commissioned by the ArchDuchess of Hungo-Austria Empire Maria Klotild in 1902, The Matild Palace became renowned for its spectacular architecture and legendary parties. Now, it's been given a new life as the newest hotel in Marriott's Luxury Collection.
The former imperial palace underwent a significant transformation to emerge as a 130-guest room luxury hotel. But many of its most fantastic original features are still intact, like crystal lamps, soaring ceilings, and art nouveau detailing throughout the building.
"The property allows our guests to realize the fantasy of living within a royal palace, elevated with modern amenities and impeccable service, and we look forward to welcoming them as they discover this timeless and inspiring city," Philipp Weghmann, vice president and global brand leader of The Luxury Collection, said in a statement .
The renovation was led by interior designer Maria Vafiadis and local architects Péter Dajka and Puhl Antal.
Inside, guests will find a mixture of antique and modern luxury upon check-in. Each bedroom features ceilings at least 13 feet high, handcrafted headboards, and a spa-style bathroom, inspired by Hungary's famous thermal baths. There are 111 rooms and 19 suites, the most decadent of which feature multi-floor layouts, chandeliers, and 360-degree views of the city.
Guests can choose to relax at the hotel's Swan Spa, featuring Hungarian-style wellness treatments like thermal therapy, dine at one of the restaurants helmed by Wolfgang Puck or enjoy a cocktail at the rooftop bar or secret liquor library. Come later this year, the hotel will also harken back to its original function as a social hotspot and host contemporary cabaret shows.
Rates start at about $535 (€450) per night, including breakfast.

19 Best Things To Do in Budapest
Updated May 8, 2023
The thermal baths are king here, but there are plenty of other ways to kill a day. World-class museums, island parks, shopping and cafes are available in spades. Foot it around Castle Hill for a taste of medieval Budapest or spend an afternoon
- All Things To Do
Fisherman's Bastion (Halászbástya) Fisherman's Bastion (Halászbástya) free
Located in the historic district of Castle Hill , Fisherman's Bastion is a neo-Gothic terrace that looks like a structure taken straight out of a fairy tale. Designed and built in 1905 by Frigyes Schulek – the same architect who built the adjacent Matthias Church – Fisherman's Bastion is named after the medieval guild of fishermen who protected Budapest from invasion.
Visitors say Fisherman's Bastion's gleaming white structure provides panoramic views of the city: From here, you can snap some breathtaking pictures of the Danube River , Margaret Island and Pest. Also save time for exploring the sight's seven ornate turrets, which symbolize the tents of the seven Magyar leaders who settled the Carpathian Basin, ultimately leading to the existence of modern-day Hungary.
Danube River Danube River free
Dividing the city's Buda and Pest sides is the impressive Danube River. Flowing roughly 1,770 miles from west Germany through Austria, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and, of course, Hungary, before meeting the Black Sea in southern Ukraine, this sprawling river is the second longest in Europe. Along its Budapest shores, travelers will find iconic sights like the Hungarian Parliament and Buda Castle .
Recent visitors highly recommend checking out the Danube River on foot or by boat. If you decide to go for a stroll, consider doing so at the Danube Promenade, which offers picturesque views and the must-see Shoes on the Danube Bank Holocaust memorial, according to past travelers. Many also suggest signing up for an evening sightseeing cruise through local operators like Legenda Sightseeing Boats and Portum Lines .
Castle Hill (Várhegy) Castle Hill (Várhegy) free
Located on the west side of the Danube River , Castle Hill is a must-see district for any Budapest visitor. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987, the area's iconic Buda Castle was constructed in the 13th century. Walk the cobblestone streets, take in the medieval atmosphere and dive deep into Budapest's history.
From the castle to Matthias Church to the underground Castle Labyrinth to Fisherman's Bastion , you'll find there's almost no end to what you can learn about Budapest's past. The lack of vehicle traffic also lends an old-world charm to the area. Plus, travelers say you'll discover sweeping city panoramas from multiple locales in the neighborhood.

Széchenyi Chain Bridge (Széchenyi Lánchíd) Széchenyi Chain Bridge (Széchenyi Lánchíd) free
It's hard to miss the nearly 1,250-foot-long Széchenyi Chain Bridge. Originally built in the 1800s by English engineer William Tierney Clark, this stunning suspension bridge was mostly destroyed during World War II. Though it was badly damaged, it still features its original pillars and stone lions that flank its entrances. Since being reconstructed in the late 1940s, visitors have flocked here to walk, bike and drive across it.
Travelers rave about this impressive bridge, saying it's a superb subject for photos. For the best views, visitors suggest arriving at night when lights illuminate the bridge and surrounding attractions. Sights you can see from the Széchenyi Chain Bridge include Buda Castle and the Hungarian Parliament .
Heroes' Square (Hosök tere) Heroes' Square (Hosök tere) free
Heroes' Square is one of Budapest's grandest landmarks. In fact, it's the largest public square in the city. Swing by this area to take a picture of the Millenary Monument, which was erected in 1896 to celebrate Hungary's 1000th anniversary.
The square and the monument are dedicated to those who lost their lives while fighting for the country's independence. At the base of the famous column (topped with the Archangel Gabriel) are statues representing seven Magyar chieftains – considered to be the founders of the Hungarian nation. Behind the column are matching colonnades with 14 statues of royalty and other important figures in Hungarian history.
Hungarian Parliament (Országház) Hungarian Parliament (Országház)
Completed in 1902, the Hungarian Parliament is one of Budapest's most famous landmarks. The Hungarian National Assembly still meets here, but visitors come mainly to take in the building's architecture (primarily Gothic Revival-style) and beautiful statues and paintings. According to many, there is no structure in Hungary that serves as a better symbol of the country's independence and commitment to democracy.
Travelers and locals alike say this structure is a must-see for any visitor's first trip to Budapest. It not only features incredible architectural details but also stunning Danube River views and significant artifacts, such as Hungary's crown jewels. If you're interested in touring the inside, visitors suggest booking well in advance since tours – which are the only way to gain interior access – fill up fast. Photography is permitted during a tour; however, taking pictures inside the Dome Hall (where the crown jewels are located) is not allowed.
St. Stephen's Basilica (Svent István Bazilika) St. Stephen's Basilica (Svent István Bazilika) free
One of downtown Budapest's most popular sights is St. Stephen's Basilica. Featuring two clock towers and an impressive cupola, this historical church, which was dedicated to Stephen I (Hungary's founder and first king) upon completion in 1905, took more than 50 years to build. Visitors flock here to catch a glimpse of its main attraction – the Holy Right. This mummified, jewel-adorned right hand of the property's namesake rests inside an ornate golden reliquary in the church's Holy Right chapel.
Past travelers praised St. Stephen's Basilica's stunning architecture and interior, as well as the breathtaking city views from the cupola's balcony. Visitors can explore the church on their own, but for more insight about its history, reviewers recommend paying for the guided tour, which includes looks at the Holy Right chapel, the on-site treasury and the cupola.
Buda Castle (Budai vár) Buda Castle (Budai vár) free
As its name implies, Castle Hill 's main attraction is its medieval castle. Built in the 14th century to accommodate various kings, the structure now features Baroque and neo-Baroque details added during various restorations. It's also home to the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum and the National Széchényi Library.
Like Gellért Hill and the Széchenyi Chain Bridge , Buda Castle boasts picturesque city panoramas, according to past visitors. However, previous travelers had mixed feelings about using the Buda Castle Funicular. Some enjoyed riding it to the top, while others bemoaned its pricey fees and suggested walking. If you are not keen on walking but want to avoid paying 1,200 forints (about $5) for a one-way fare or 1,800 forints ($7) for a round-trip ticket, consider using the No. 16 bus. Each ticket costs 350 forints (roughly $1.50) when purchased in advance; to get a ticket on board, expect to pay 450 forints (less than $2). For Budapest Card holders, rides on public transportation are covered.

Matthias Church (Mátyás-templom) Matthias Church (Mátyás-templom) free
The neo-Gothic Matthias Church in Castle Hill has been around for centuries and, in many ways, its history corresponds to that of Budapest itself. Built in the 13th century, Matthias was the city's first parish church. However, it was transformed into a mosque during the 1541 Ottoman occupation and remained an Islamic place of worship until the Turkish expulsion nearly 150 years later. Today, tourists come to admire its imposing architecture, take in its historical symbolism and spend some time studying its impressive artwork.
Recent visitors said the church's architecture is striking and the informational place cards throughout the property give you a sense of its expansive history. Don't forget to check out the Ecclesiastical Art Collection, also housed inside. You can see the medieval crypt where 10th-century King Béla III and his wife Agnes are buried, as well replicas of royal jewels and other religious artifacts. And if you enjoy organs, the church's (with 7,771 pipes and 18 bells) is regularly the star of on-site concerts and shows.
Dohány Street Synagogue (Dohány utcai Zsinagóga) Dohány Street Synagogue (Dohány utcai Zsinagóga) free
Also referred to as the Great Synagogue, this place of worship is the largest synagogue in Europe and the second-largest in the world (only Temple Emanu-El in New York City is slightly bigger). Opened in 1859, this building features Romantic and Moorish Revival-style architecture and can accommodate up to 3,000 people.
Travelers suggest you visit for the atmosphere and to learn of the synagogue's historical significance – particularly its connection to the Holocaust. In 1939, the synagogue was bombed by a Hungarian pro-Nazi party, and between 1944 and 1945, Dohány Street itself constituted the border of Budapest's Jewish ghetto. Visit the adjacent Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives to learn about the history of Hungarian Judaism and to pay your respects at the Garden of Memory in its courtyard.
Museum of Fine Arts (Szépmuvészeti Múzeum) Museum of Fine Arts (Szépmuvészeti Múzeum)
Located in City Park by Sz é chenyi Baths and the Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden, the Museum of Fine Arts showcases Hungarian art dating back to the Middle Ages, plus Egyptian antiquities and 13th- to 19th-century European paintings. Exhibitions feature medals, prints, drawings, wooden sculptures, altarpieces and modern art – all of which contributed to Hungarian history and art development.
Previous museumgoers heap praise on the Museum of Fine Arts, adding that the renovation it underwent until October 2018 is beautiful. Some past visitors specifically raved about the informative displays, noting that they're so well-done that you don't need an audio guide.
Thermal Baths Thermal Baths
A soak in a thermal bath is a quintessential Budapest experience. (It hasn't cultivated a reputation as the "City of Spas" for nothing.) These baths, or fürdok in Hungarian, are heated by natural thermal springs and usually include on-site massage services, as well as steam rooms.
With more than 100 thermal springs, the various baths around the city cater to different tastes – from relaxation to cures for illness – and some transform into pulsating dance clubs at night, so if you're bathing with your family, you might want to do so during the daylight hours.
Gellért Hill (Gellért-hegy) Gellért Hill (Gellért-hegy) free
Across the Danube River from the Inner City lies Gellért Hill. Measuring 771 feet high, this neighborhood is best known for its 19th-century citadel, but the area is also home to an arboretum, a church built into a cave and various statues, such as the Liberty Statue (a traveler favorite) and one of the region's namesake, Saint Gerard. Legend has it that the Italian monk was pushed off of the hill to his death in the 1000s.
On a sunny day, visitors say Gellért Hill offers jaw-dropping views of the river and downtown Budapest. Travelers also praise the neighborhood's statues but recommend learning more about their histories before arriving to supplement your visit. What's more, some caution that the walk up the hill is exhausting, but limited parking is available by the citadel for a fee. You can also take the No. 27 bus most of the way up to the Búsuló Juhász stop.

Hungarian State Opera House (Magyar Állami Operaház) Hungarian State Opera House (Magyar Állami Operaház)
Central Pest's Hungarian State Opera House has been an institution in Budapest since its opening in 1884. Featuring a neo-Renaissance style, the opera house holds more than 1,200 seats and has a reputation for its exceptional acoustics. But the building's main draw is its opulent architecture – inside and out. Marble columns, gilded vaulted ceilings, an enormous bronze chandelier, and murals and frescoes depicting Greek mythological scenes provide a romantic setting.
According to recent visitors, the opera house's exterior justifies a stop, even if you don't head inside for a guided tour. If you do decide to take a tour, keep in mind that the building is currently undergoing renovations. Some past travelers bemoaned not being able to see the auditorium during their visits.
House of Terror Museum (Terror Háza Múzeum) House of Terror Museum (Terror Háza Múzeum)
Located in the Terézváros neighborhood in Pest's District VI, the House of Terror Museum is a jarring but important museum that documents the dictatorial oppression Hungary faced during its fascist and Stalinist regimes. Once the headquarters of the State Protection Authority (similar to the Soviet Union's KGB), the building was where brutal interrogations and the torturing of countless political activists and dissidents took place throughout the 20th century. Tour the chillingly realistic prison cell replicas in the basement, and brace yourself for the powerful and moving exhibit on Hungary's post-World War II years leading up to the 1953 uprising against its Soviet-controlled government.
Recent visitors said this museum's exhibits are thought-provoking and informative. However, a few lamented the no photography policy inside. Another drawback: the Hungarian-only displays. To understand the material presented in each exhibit, you'll need to ask for handouts with English translations or pay an extra 1,500 forints (roughly $6) for an English audio guide. You can also reserve a guided tour with an English-speaking guide at least 10 days in advance for 8,000 forints (about $31).

See inside a new ultra-luxury river cruise line that's charging up to $59,520 per person
- Newcomer Riverside Luxury Cruises wants to break into the growing river cruise market.
- The ultra-luxury cruise line operates former Crystal ships in popular European rivers like the Danube.
- Riverside's 2024 cruises start at $1,055 per person for four days.
A new ultra-luxury cruise line wants to be the swankiest travel-by-river vacation option.
To do so, it's enticing cruisers with truffle-infused butter, $320-per-person dinners, and butlers that can be beckoned with a simple WhatsApp message.
Affluent travelers , meet Riverside Luxury Cruises.
The budding company first set sail in March 2023. With a year of service under its belt, its three ships are now sailing some of Europe's most popular rivers — starting at more than $260 per person per day.
Riverside is operated by Seaside Collection, a European hotelier.
The firm had its sights set on a river cruise venture since 2018, Jen Halboth, CEO of Riverside Luxury Cruises, told Business Insider.
Ironically, COVID-19 was the reason it got into the business.
Crystal Cruises declared bankruptcy in early 2022 amid the pandemic. Shortly after, Seaside purchased and updated five of the then-defunct cruise line's ships.
Three of these vessels now make up Riverside's fleet. The other two are being leased to competitor Uniworld River Cruises.
River cruising has become increasingly popular as wealthy travelers gravitate to ultra-luxury small-ship vacations.
River cruise ships are much smaller than their behemoth ocean-based counterparts, allowing Riverside to sail in waterways like Europe's Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Main, Moselle, and Saône rivers.
Along the way, guests can explore destinations many giant ships can't easily access — like Budapest, Hungary; Frankfurt, Germany; and Amsterdam — sometimes visiting more than one port in a day.
One of Riverside's shortest and cheapest 2024 voyages starts at $1,055 per person for a four-day Danube River cruise from Passau, Germany, to Vienna.
Alcohol and excursion packages can tack on an extra $75 to $175 per person per night.
Looking to ball out? The most expensive and longest itinerary is $59,521 per person for a three-river, 22-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary, in the most expensive suite with the most inclusive package.
To compare, the cheapest 2024 voyage with all-inclusive luxury competitor Uniworld River Cruises starts at $2,000 per person for an eight-day Danube River sailing.
River cruisers tend to be over the age of 55.
But the new company is targeting guests 45 years old and older, specifically those who frequent luxury vacations but have yet to try a river cruise.
"New luxury travelers want to be pampered, get off and have an adventure, and come back and be taken care of," the cruise line's CEO said.
"Pampering” they will get.
Of Riverside's three ships, the 394-foot-long, 74-foot-wide Mozart can accommodate the most guests — up to 162, not including the 82 crew.
Yes, it's larger than Uniworld's ships, which range from 32 to 159 guests. But it's also significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's new 9,950-person Icon of the Seas ocean vessel.
Like most cruise liners, Riverside's three ships have spas, buffets, and plush lounges and bars.
During the day, travelers can enjoy lunch at the open-air grill and relax to live music courtesy of Steinway and Bösendorfer pianos, no less.
At night, they can dine on a seven-course meal at the 295 euros ($320) per-person Vintage Room.
Riverside’s ships have up to 5 restaurants. Vintage Room is the only specialty option.
The cost to dine includes a wine pairing and plates like veal with truffle and chanterelle mushrooms and "surf and turf" with beef sirloin and scallops.
But don't expect a lackluster, rushed meal at the other complimentary options: "This is not a churn-and-burn," the company's CEO said of the ships' Waterside restaurants. "You come in for fine dining."
Infused, whipped butter is apparently one of Riverside's hottest commodities.
Sometimes, it has chiles. Other times, it's infused with citrus. If you're lucky, you'll get one with truffles.
"People were raving about our butter," Halboth said. "Everyone's waiting to see what butter they'll get at dinner each night."
Need to sleep off all that dairy? You're in luck. Every cabin has a king bed.
Riverside's suites range from 194 to 883 square-feet. These high-end cabins include butler service, stocked mini-bars, and espresso machines.
Some suites also have double-sink vanities and walk-in closets, a hallmark of an ultra-luxury cruise vessel .
Does Riverside’s more than $260 per person, per day fare seem reasonable now?
If yes, book soon. It'll only get more expensive from here.
These fares don't offset the amount Riverside is spending on amenities like the upscale food, according to Halboth. To make up for these expenditures, the cruise line plans to raise its prices gradually over the next two years.
The company's CEO said bookings have been 'a little lighter' since the start of 2024.
But the back half of the year is "filling up" thanks to Americans: About 70 to 80% of its guests are from North America, the company said.
Riverside will operate its Mozart, Ravel, and Debussy ships for three years as it 'hones the brand,' Halboth said.
The cruise line's two additional vessels would join its fleet in the next few years.
Given the growing popularity of river cruises , it's a good time for companies like Riverside to start expanding.
However, it could face plenty of incoming competition.
Jamie Loizou, the UK managing director of luxury river cruise line AmaWaterways, is forecasting 2024 as a "pivotal" year for the river cruise industry, noting that 15 new river-based vessels are expected to launch this year, Cruise Critic reported .
