EXACTLY How To Go From Ipoh To Cameron Highlands [2024]

Ready for some cool air and fabulous highlands scenery and want to know how to take transport from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands?

Well, if you do, you’ve come to the right place.

Both are fantastic places to visit when you’re in Malaysia, and getting from one place to another is relatively easy. Cameron Highlands is filled with gorgeous tea plantations, strawberry farms and so many stunning locations, making it an excellent contrast to Ipoh’s busy, vibrant streets.

Before you go, you can book your Ipoh and Cameron Highlands tour bus or private taxi using the details below.

We describe how you can get from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands (and vice versa!) whether you plan to travel via bus, taxi or private car. Similarly, we’ll also mention how you can get from Ipoh airport to Cameron Highlands.

Map: Cameron Highlands from Ipoh

The following map shows you how to go to Cameron Highlands to Ipoh. Note that Cameron Highlands is in another state- in Pahang. Ipoh, on the other hand, is located in Perak. It’s easy to get from Cameron Highlands to Ipoh. Usually, it will take you about 2 hours.

The road from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands distance is approximately 89 km depending on exactly where you want to go in Cameron Highlands.

Now, if you’re planning to take the old route (via Tapah) landslides are quite common here especially during the rainy season. Bigger vehicles that use this road need to be on a constant lookout for traffic, especially on sharp bends.

BEST OPTION: How To Go From Ipoh To Cameron Highlands

The quickest and best option for travelling from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands is to take a private taxi.

The cheapest option is to take a bus.

Here’s a summary of your options:

Option 1: Ipoh to Cameron Highlands Bus

cameron highlands day trip from ipoh

Travelling by bus is the cheapest option to get to Cameron Highlands. More so, catching a bus from Ipoh going to Cameron Highlands is quick and painless. This usually takes about 2.5 hours of travel time and will cost you about RM25 per person.

You can book a bus ticket from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands here.

The Ipoh to Cameron Highlands bus schedule currently starts at 11:30am with the last trip at 4:30pm. It used to be much more frequent before the pandemic so hopefully when you check out the latest schedules here , there will be more services again.

Pick up point is at the Terminal Meru Raya which is about a 20-minute drive from Ipoh Town. You can take a taxi, city bus or Grab taxi from the town center going to the terminal and vice versa.

Now, if you want to catch a bus from Ipoh airport to Cameron Highlands, this is about 25 minutes’ drive to get to the bus terminal. Take note that there’s no Ipoh airport to Cameron Highlands bus that goes directly to Cameron Highlands.

If you decide to travel by public bus to the bus terminal, expect delays. Take a Grab taxi going to the terminal instead for a more hassle-free transfer.

Bus services from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands ply daily. There are several bus operators, like the Unititi Express Ipoh Cameron Highlands, that travel between Ipoh and Cameron Highlands.

Another thing that you have to keep in mind- be cautious when you take a bus to Cameron Highland from Ipoh is that the road can be narrow and winding- going up and down and around the hills. It’s handy if you bring motion sickness pills with you if you have any problems with motion sickness.

Also, if you can, book as far ahead as possible using the link below so you can select a seat in the front row for a more comfortable journey.

A major drawback of this option is that you’ll be dropped in only one drop-off point, and that is the Tanah Rata bus terminal. You’ll need to take a Grab taxi from here to your hotel.

Click here to see the latest prices and schedules

Option 2: Ipoh to Cameron Highlands Taxi

cameron highlands day trip from ipoh

If you don’t want to take public transportation, alternatively, you can take a taxi if you’re travelling for Ipoh or Cameron Highlands district. This usually takes about 2 hours’ travel time, and will, of course, cost you a more, around RM550.

Once you arrive in Cameron Highlands, it’s also unlikely that you’ll hail a cab on the street. The best way to secure a taxi is to book in advance.

You can do that here.

A major advantage of taking the taxi is that you don’t have to worry about getting to bus terminals. You can be picked up at your hotel or the airport and dropped off straight at your next hotel. This is also ideal if you’re carrying a lot of luggage with you as you don’t have to lug it around in the sweaty heat.

However, if you’re a solo traveler, this can be an expensive option. For families and groups, it’s even more perfect.

You can find out prices and book a reliable taxi here.

Option 3: Ipoh to Cameron Highlands By Car

cameron highlands day trip from ipoh

As we previously mentioned, the most convenient way to go from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands is to self-drive. At the moment, there are two driving routes – the newer route which is via Simpang Pulai is less windy, the travel time is slightly shorter. Driving time is more or less two hours, and the distance from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands is 89km.

The second route, on the other hand, is via North-South Express Toll Road and Tapah, Perak. Driving time is two hours and 40 minutes with a distance of 114km. Although this might take longer, you can make a stopover at one of the popular local hotspots in the area, the magical Lata Iskandar waterfall if you take the old Kampar road or Route 2.

The advantage of driving a car is that you’ll have a more flexible itinerary. You can even customise your very own Cameron Highlands itinerary if you prefer to. This is also a relatively cheaper (and family-friendly!) option if you’re traveling as a large group. You’ll be comfortable with having your own private vehicle, and there’s no need to share the ride with strangers.

When you do the journey in reverse coming from Cameron Highlands to Ipoh, the ways we’ve mentioned above are still valid. You can take the same transportation options for the reverse journey.

Also, note that if you’re taking public transportation such as a bus from Cameron Highlands to Ipoh the pickup point is from Tanah Rata Bus Terminal. The Cameron Highlands to Ipoh bus starts as early as 8:30am and the final departure time is at 2:30pm.

You can also book a super easy private transfer by taxi here.

Final Words

Cameron Highlands is a beautiful place to visit and getting to Cameron Highlands from Ipoh (and vice-versa!) is a straightforward process. Ideally, we recommend going there by car or private vehicle (if you’re touring around Malaysia). For a cheaper, budget-friendly option, take the bus.

So there you have it. We hope that you found this guide helpful. Whether you want to self-drive, take a taxi, or bus, you can check out the following options that we’ve noted on this post. So, start planning, and place these destinations on your Malaysian travel bucket list now!

About Cameron Highlands

Located 200 kilometres to the north of Kuala Lumpur, the Cameron Highlands is a vast, hilly region famed for its tea plantations and cool climate.

With the area developed in the late 1920s – and the road opened in 1931 – the Cameron Highlands became a favourite of British colonial settlers in the 1930s, who came here to enjoy some relief from the sweltering temperatures elsewhere in the country.

The land was ideal for growing fresh vegetables and tea, but there were also many colonial buildings – a golf course, cottages, schools, a police office and administrative buildings.

So if you’re wondering what to do in Cameron Highlands in one day, there’s plenty!

Cameron Highlands 1-Day Itinerary

There’s a lot to mark out on your Cameron Highlands tourist map!

If you join a Cameron Highlands full-day tour, these are the highlights included in the standard tour. If you’re visiting independently, these are the highlights that you shouldn’t miss on a trip to this lush, green slice of upland Malaysia.

Enjoy the views over the tea plantations

The first stop for most Cameron Highlands tours will be to explore a selection of tea plantations. Boh is the most famous, but there are also other tea plantations you can visit.

For example there’s also Bharat Tea Plantations, which is where you’ll find the perfectly located Cameron Valley Tea House 1 and 2 – the views from here are amazing.

Fairlie Tea Plantation is another good option, which offers tours and a place to sample tea on a beautiful backdrop.

All in all, the tea plantations in the Cameron Highlands make for a pretty place for a walk, enjoy the views and to take some pictures.

Have tea at Boh Tea Centre

The Boh Tea Centre is an ideal stop for tea lovers, and the most common stop on most tours. This beautifully located plantation offers a glimpse into not just the tea industry, but the history of the Cameron Highlands as a whole.

Located 5,000 feet above sea level, the conditions here – low temperatures, high rainfall, and acidic soil – make it ideal for tea growing.

You can spend time here wandering the tea garden, taking a peek inside the factory and enjoying the views over the plantations while you sip tea and have a bite to eat.

Plus it’s a great place to pick up souvenirs. Where better place to buy tea than straight from the source?

Hike in the Mossy Forest

Cameron Highlands is home to some prime highland forest, where tree ferns grow and moss hangs from old branches of ancient trees.

The mist and cool temperatures create the ideal environment for lichens, ferns, moss and orchids to grow. Interesting wildlife makes their home here, from snakes and frogs to various bird species and mammals.

Exploring the wondrous realm of this particular stretch of forest – dubbed Mossy Forest – has been made easy thanks to a boardwalk that has been constructed to wind through the trees.

The boardwalk stretches from the entrance out into the Mossy Forest, does a little loop at the end and then joins back with the same initial trail.

The whole walk takes around 30 minutes to 1 hour tops, and is a great way to get up close to this beautiful nature, but still walking in relative comfort on the boardwalk.

Visit the Butterfly Farm

Definitely on the Cameron Highlands attractions map is the popular Butterfly Farm. Comprising part of the Kea Farm, this is one of the oldest attractions in the region.

Set in a greenhouse, the Butterfly Farm occupies a sloping hillside and is filled not only with butterflies but other insects and animals too.  These include s nakes, leaf insects, huge beetles, and other animals and insects indigenous to Malaysia.

It’s open daily 8:30AM to 6PM. The entrance ticket usually isn’t included in your Cameron Highlands tour package, you have to pay it on the spot but admission is only RM 7.

Eat fresh strawberries at the Strawberry Farm

With more than one strawberry farm to its name, finding somewhere to pick fresh strawberries in the Cameron Highlands is relatively easy.

It’s the centre of Malaysian strawberry production, after all, with the cold climate providing good growing conditions for the sweet fruit.

One spot is Kok Lim Strawberry Farm (open 9AM to 5PM, it costs RM 30 to pick 500 grams of strawberries yourself).

Personally we didn’t pick strawberries, we just visited the Strawberry Farm and purchased some strawberry products from the shop. It was a bit of an odd stop on the tour, but still pretty interesting.

Visit a Local Market

A day trip to Cameron Highlands wouldn’t be complete without a trip to a colourful local market. The Pasar Pagi Kea Farm market is one of the biggest, while Raju Hill Strawberry Farm also has a decent vegetable market.

Here you can find all sorts of fruit and vegetables, as well as souvenirs. It’s a great place to learn about local culture. Here at night? Don’t miss Brinchang Night Market for edible delights.

Learn about local history at the Time Tunnel Museum

The Time Tunnel Museum is a must-visit museum that works as a time capsule filled with nostalgic memorabilia from Brinchang’s post-war past.

Think old TVs, barber chairs, children’s toys, and a recreation of a retro kopi tiam (traditional Malaysian eatery), among other things.

It’s the local museum in Cameron Highlands, and it’s a pretty interesting place to visit to learn about local history. It doesn’t go into a huge amount of detail, focusing more on showcasing memorabilia, but it’s still interesting.

Visit Sam Poh Temple

One interesting place at Cameron Highlands you should pay a visit to is Sam Poh Temple, a Chinese Buddhist temple that makes for a colourful stop to explore and snap pictures.

It’s a simple temple, but peaceful enough to make it worth visiting. It was the final stop of our Cameron Highlands day tour.

When you compare to other temples in Malaysia, like Batu Caves or Thean Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur, Sam Poh isn’t as amazing, but it’s still an interesting cultural stop on an otherwise very nature focused tour.

Swim in a waterfall

Our tour didn’t include a waterfall stop, but they do usually feature on most Cameron Highlands day tours. Thanks to the hills and wet conditions, there are several waterfalls to check out.

One is Lata Iskandar Waterfall, which is a picturesque spot where you can dip your feet in the pool, and pick up a snack from a nearby vendor if you’re hungry.

There’s also the scenic and sizeable Robinson Falls, which features a 10-minute hike along a trail (not well marked) to get to it.

The waterfalls in Cameron Highlands might not be as impressive as Seven Wells Waterfalls in Langkawi, but they’re still very pretty.

How many days do you need in Cameron Highlands?

Despite the distance between the two, there are day trips available from Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands .

These day trips allow you to see the main sights of the area in a whirlwind tour that means you won’t have to worry about getting to and from the highlands yourself.

However, as it’s quite a long drive from KL, I really would suggest spending at least 1 night in Cameron Highlands. This will give you more time to explore at a leisurely pace.

Once you’re there you can then do a full day tour starting directly from Cameron Highlands, maybe even staying another night before heading back. This is what we did as part of our wider Malaysia itinerary, and it worked well for us.

We spent the morning in Kuala Lumpur , arrived in Cameron Highlands in the afternoon, spent the next day doing a full-day tour of Cameron Highlands, and then left the next day (total 2 nights in Cameron Highlands).

It ultimately depends on how much time you have in Malaysia and what else you want to see, but I personally think one night in Cameron Highlands is the bare minimum to avoid spending hours in a minivan or bus.

What to pack for a day trip to Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands can have a very variable weather, so it’s important to pack accordingly.

Waterproof jacket – even if you’re visiting in dry season, you will need one of these! We even went as far as rain ponchos , as it was just too rainy when we were there.

Adapter – depending on where you come from you might need one of these to charge your electronics. I like to use an international one so that it can work for multiple destinations.

Power bank – if you’re out and about all day you don’t want your phone to die on you just as you’re about to snap a great photo of the beautiful temples in Kuala Lumpur!

Waterproof shoes – if it ends up raining, you don’t want to get your feet wet! It’s also a good idea to pack flip-flops or a change of shoes, that way you can get out of your wet shoes at the end of the day.

Do you need travel insurance for Cameron Highlands?

After my personal experience spending two nights in a private hospital in Tenerife, and having to pay for it out of pocket (it wasn’t cheap), I always recommend getting travel insurance .

You might not end up needing it, but for a small fee you can travel without worries. Personally, I suggest getting your travel insurance with  Heymondo .

Heymondo offers tailor made travel insurance, providing the best value for money for your specific trip. You can also buy it once you’re already abroad and have forgotten about it before flying (which, if you’re anything like me, is quite likely).

Besides the usual cancellation, medical expenses, luggage coverage and general travel insurance services, Heymondo also has a 24/7 doctor chat and instant assistance through their app.

Final thoughts on doing a day tour to Cameron Highlands

That’s a wrap on the ultimate Cameron Highlands day tour guide! Have you been to Cameron Highlands before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

Cameron Highlands is the perfect place to escape the humid tropical climate of the lowlands. You will have the best time here, exploring tea plantations, verdant forests, flowing waterfalls and unique viewpoints.

From here many travellers continue onwards to Taman Negara, a famous tropical rainforest, but personally we chose to travel on to Ipoh, Georgetown and Langkawi .

There are different towns in the Cameron Highlands areas, all with their own charm.

Jai is a great storyteller and filled our time with unique facts about the Highlands' history, people and nature, which made it very immersive. Rames' driving prowess deserves a call out because we were very comfortable despite the winding roads of the highlands. Planning an itinerary to Ipoh, Malaysia? Worry not, we are here to help.

Though a small city compared to Kuala Lumpur, there are still many awesome attractions in Ipoh. From the interesting Hakka mining history to the spectacular natural cave temples surrounding Ipoh , visiting Ipoh without a planned itinerary can lead to much unforeseen waste of time and money.

After spending a week in Ipoh, we created the perfect Ipoh itinerary for anyone taking a day trip to Ipoh or spending 2 or 3 days there!

Let’s get to it!

How Many Days Is Enough In Ipoh?

cameron highlands day trip from ipoh

Day 1 Morning

Ipoh-White-Coffee-best coffee in ipoh

Aim to arrive in Ipoh as early as possible , ideally around 8 AM. If you are coming from Kuala Lumpur, it takes about 2.5 hours by car. If you are coming from Penang, it takes about 2 hours. Yes, that means leaving at around 6 AM!

Why are we arriving so early in Ipoh? You want to start your day trip in Ipoh right by having the famous Ipoh white coffee . For anyone that doesn’t know what that is, it is the coffee that put Ipoh on the map as one of the best coffee towns in the world .

In fact, the coffee in Ipoh is so amazing that  Lonely Planet has named Ipoh one of the top 3 coffee towns in Asia !

Ipoh’s white coffee is much sweeter and lighter than the regular kind, perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth!

There are several cafes in Ipoh known for their white coffee. The two I recommend are  Sin Yoon Loong  and  Nam Heong White Coffee . Though Nam Heong White Coffee is a little more popular, Sin Yoon Loong still follows the original recipe!

Don’t forget to grab some breakfast here as well. The food in Ipoh is some of the best and cheapest in Malaysia!

After an invigorating white coffee and some tasty breakfast, it is time to visit some of the most interesting places in Ipoh: the cave temples .

In the Perak region where Ipoh is located, there are over 30 different cave temples. With so many different options, it is difficult to decide which ones to go to, especially if you only have 1 day in Ipoh.

Luckily, you are reading our Ipoh blog post!

Perak-Tong-Cave-Temple-Ipoh Famous Place

The  best cave temples in Ipoh  are  Perak Tong Cave Temple ,  Sam Poh Tong Cave Temple , and  Kek Lok Tong . You cannot go wrong with visiting any of them. I recommend visiting at least 2 of the 3 cave temples I listed above.

Take your time and admire the geological formations, the intriguing religious artifacts, and just enjoy the unworldly feeling of being in a cave temple!

Another unique attraction in Ipoh is Kellie’s Castle. An abandoned European-style castle built by a Scot, this  unfinished building is rumored to be haunted ! Including this place on your itinerary is going to be difficult, especially without a car.

Day 1 Afternoon

cameron highlands day trip from ipoh

Ipoh has a rich history and it is difficult to grasp all of it on a short trip. The Han Chin Pet Soo Museum is the perfect place in Ipoh to start learning more about how the town became what it is today.

It talks about the early history of Ipoh when it was mostly a tin mining town . Information about the early Hakka miners and their lifestyles is also documented in the museum.

The best part about the Han Chin Pet Soo Museum? It is free and comes with a tour guide! However, there is a suggested donation of 10 Malaysian Ringgit to preserve this historical building.

You must reserve your spot on their  official site  before arriving. Note that the last 2 sessions of the day are at 2 PM and 3:30 PM. Han Chin Pet Soo Museum is closed on Mondays.

2. Ipoh Street Art and Murals

Ipoh-Street-Art-And-Murals

Everyone that travels to Malaysia knows that Penang is the city for graffiti, but we were surprised to find so many cool street art and murals in Ipoh as well.

Street art and murals fill the streets of both the Ipoh Old Town and New Town , and it is nearly impossible to not just randomly stumble upon them.

The amazing thing about Ipoh street art and murals is that they are not just about anything. Usually, they often depict the daily lives of the residents of Ipoh, offering glimpses of their lifestyle and history.

Travelers can find a large concentration of Ipoh street art at  Ipoh Mural  and  Mural’s Art Lane .

Eight of the total murals in Ipoh are done by a Lithuanian artist named Ernest Zacharevic. His most famous work is the “An Old Uncle Drinking Coffee” mural and the trishaw 3D mural which is properly called “Old Town Relives Nostalgia With Trishaw”.

Mural’s Art Lane is one of the most magical places for photography in Ipoh!

3. Concubine Lane

Concubine-Lane-Ipoh-sightseeing

If there is one thing to do in Ipoh, it is to visit the  Concubine Lane . Why? Because this place summarizes Ipoh in just one tiny street.

The Concubine Lane was a street that the mining tycoon Yau Tet Shin gave to one of his three wives. The wife would make money by collecting taxes and profits from the vendors on her street.

Yau Tet Shin gave 2 more streets to his 2 other wives, namely Hale Lane and Second Concubine Lane, though they are not as lively as the Concubine Lane.

Nowadays, restored historical buildings are lined up on the side of the street. Buildings that were once used for brothels and other illegal activities have now become cafes, restaurants, and shops .

As one of the most popular places to visit in Ipoh, Concubine Lane can get very crowded. If it is possible, avoid visiting on the weekend or you will learn the concept of “invasion of personal space.”

4. Ipoh Railway Station

Ipoh-Railway-Station

The  Ipoh Railway Station  is one of the most iconic landmarks in Ipoh. Locals love this building so much that they call it the Taj Mahal of Ipoh .

The beautiful transportation hub is used by travelers daily and has connections to many big cities in Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

To see the Ipoh Railway Station at its finest state, you must visit at sunset. The golden hues of the sunset emphasize the colors of the building, making it one of my favorite places in Ipoh to watch the sunset (the other being Bukit Kledang but that involves a hike).

After the sun has set, there is a routine evening water show . Though it cannot compare to the one next to the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, it is a relaxing thing to do in Ipoh at night .

Though it is technically a water show, it doesn’t stop locals or travelers from jumping into the cold soothing waters!

Day 1 Night

cameron highlands day trip from ipoh

If the weather is too hot, especially at midday, you can take a break at your accommodation, a cafe, or a shopping mall. From 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM, the sun is like a biological weapon that melts you like butter.

With the extra time, you can add a few more attractions to your Ipoh itinerary.

I would personally recommend a visit to the  BookXcess Kong Heng Ipoh  bookstore. Using old bank vaults to display their merchandise, BookXcess Kong Heng is one of the most unique bookstores in the world.

cameron highlands day trip from ipoh

If you are taking a day trip to Cameron Highlands from Ipoh, you won’t be able to fully appreciate its beauty. I recommend staying a few days in Cameron Highlands!

There are still several notable attractions in Camera Highlands you can visit on a day trip.

One of the biggest tea plantations in Malaysia,  BOH Tea Centre , offers tours of their tea processing facility as well as close contact with the tea plants themselves. The maze of tea plants is almost as beautiful as the rice paddies in  Sekinchan  in the western part of the Malay Peninsula.

cameron highlands day trip from ipoh

The  Big Red Strawberry Farm  offers strawberry picking, a caf e, and a gift shop. Due to the climate, the strawberries in Cameron Highlands are some of the best in the world. They do, however, come with a heavy price tag (even by western standards).

The strawberry milkshake at their cafe is very delicious and worth a try!

cameron highlands day trip from ipoh

If you are visiting Ipoh with family and kids or just want to relax for a day, then consider visiting the Lost World of Tambun Theme Park.

This theme park is situated on the outskirts of Ipoh, and it is a theme park that has something for everything – from a water park to natural hot springs and even a petting zoo!

Kids can enjoy the family-friendly rides in Lost World Amusement Park or the wave pools at the Water Park, while adults can relax in the multiple natural hot springs inside the park. The park is on the foot of stunning limestone cliffs, so visitors can admire their views as they soak their aching limbs.

If you are tired of sightseeing, consider a day of easy fun at the Lost World of Tambun Theme Park!

Where To Stay In Ipoh, Malaysia

Best Hostel in Ipoh-  The Brownstone Hostel & Space

Where To Stay In Ipoh 1

If you are looking for an affordable hostel near the center of Ipoh, look no further. The Brownstone Hostel & Space features mixed dormitory-style rooms, clean facilities, and a cozy decor. It is a true backpacker hostel where you can meet other like-minded travelers!

The accommodation is centrally located so it is literally within walking distance from everything you might need or want to see.

Best Budget Hotel in Ipoh-  D Eastern Hotel

Affordable Hotel Ipoh

With so many  budget hotels in Ipoh , finding the right one can be difficult. Luckily, D Eastern Hotel makes deciding much easier. Featuring comfortable big rooms at a low price, guests can enjoy great comfort without breaking the bank.

The hotel is located in the New Town of Ipoh, with many eateries and things to do nearby!

Best Luxury Hotel in Ipoh-  The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat

Best Hotel in Ipoh

The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat is the ultimate luxury hotel in Ipoh. Nestled in the stunning limestone hills of the Perak region, guests can relax and promote their wellbeing with their ice baths, steam caves, and geothermal hot springs. However, it is located a little far away from the center of town. Having your own vehicle is a must if you decide to stay in this luxurious accommodation.

If you don’t want to stay here but would like to use its facilities, you can check out this day pass option that allows guests to use all of its hot springs and baths.

Best Time To Visit Ipoh

Because Ipoh (and most of Malaysia) has a tropical climate, it is best to visit Ipoh in the winter months, ideally between December and February. Not only will you encounter less rainfall, but the temperatures are cool enough to enjoy exploring the city on foot.

If you visit during the summer, you can easily encounter temperatures over 35 C, which is definitely a recipe for heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
