To know what a Winter travel capsule wardrobe is, it is worth outlining what a travel capsule wardrobe is.

Capsule wardrobes, travel or regular, are a method of limiting the clothes you are using. Using a travel capsule wardrobe is a great way of avoiding overpacking.

A travel capsule wardrobe, no matter the season, uses a few key pieces of clothing to make up several cute mix and match outfits. Basically meaning that every piece of your wardrobe, can be used in multiple outfits to create completely different outfits.

However Winter travel capsule wardrobes can be more challenging to pack, especially if you want to travel with hand luggage only. That is because the weight of clothes you are traveling with will inevitably take up more space in your case.

Therefore in this guide we will tell you the best clothes to pack for winter season travel while giving advice on packing them to maximise your luggage space.

Depending on the length of our travels and the destination we also use other packing techniques to create our capsule wardrobes such as:

This Winter packing list and capsule wardrobe is designed to be used in the traditional Winter months of December, January and February. In places with traditional Winter weather i.e. Europe in Winter , the North East USA and Canada in Winter for instance.

Note : if you are traveling to the Southern hemisphere i.e. Australia and South Africa, Winter is obviously catagorized as June, July and August.

And even if you are traveling in Winter it is worth pointing out that packing lists can differ from place to place, especially in relation to local temperatures and dress codes. How to put together a Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Whenever I am putting together a capsule wardrobe the first thing I always start with the same principles for narrowing down my selection. The first being:

Select a color palette

Having a clear color palette is essential for creating any successful capsule wardrobe no matter the season of travel.

Without a clear color palette your items will not mix and match correctly and therefore will not create multiple cohesive Winter outfits.

However a color palette does not have to be boring or monochrome in order to create a successful capsule wardrobe. Many people choose to stick to monochrome or neutral colors as these tend to be easier to mix and match. However there is nothing stopping you going with a louder color palette.

For Winter capsule wardrobes however, I personally like to have a more muted color palette, especially for traveling to Europe. That is because it fits in with local styles more.

But if you are planning to use your winter capsule wardrobe in December as a Christmas capsule wardrobe you may want to leave into more Christmassy colors such as red and green.

Plan out your outfits in advance

Whenever I am packing my travel capsule wardrobe, I always lay my clothes out and plan my outfit combinations in advance.

This way you know that everything you have goes in your outfits and can be used multiple times.

Plan for Activities

This Winter Travel Capsule wardrobe is designed for city breaks and traditional Winter outings. However for more extreme Winter activities such as skiing, skating, husky rides etc you will need to alter this list to prepare for your activity.

Check weather before travel

Obviously this is a generic Winter capsule wardrobe designed for use during traditional Winter weather in December, January and February. However a word of caution is to always check the weather at your destination 7 days before travel and keep an eye on it up until departure.

That is because you can always get cold snaps which can affect things like snowfall, ice or rain at your destination.

Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe Essential Items

So now you know the principles of how to put together a winter travel capsule wardrobe we will look at some of our favorite pieces to include:

Although we don’t normally have pairs of jeans as part of our summer capsule wardrobe they are absolutely an essential for any Winter packing list.

A pair of black jeans are a super versatile pieces and hide stains easier than a light wash jeans. Also you will find in Europe in particular that dark blue are a popular style. As I normally have a pair of black pants with me I will usually pick a dark blue pair of jeans for Winter travel.

If you are traveling in the US or Canada I would select the style of jeans you are most comfortable i.e. your favorite jeans from home. However for mainland Europe I would stick to smarter jeans and skinny jeans as opposed to boyfriend jeans or baggy jeans. That is because these are more akin to local style.

Also for Winter I prefer to have a pair of lined jeans. These are better insulated against cold weather and are comfy even in more extreme weather conditions and cold climates.

Black Pants

No packing list or capsule wardrobe is complete without a pair of black pants in my opinion.

My absolute favorite travel pant of the moment has to be the Athleta Brooklyn Pant which happily come in black as standard (though there are also some great bold colors too).

But not only that the fact that they do not wrinkle, along with the ability to machine wash and dry make them perfect for traveling and including in this minimalist capsule wardrobe.

I like to wear these as part of my airplane outfit which again saves room in your luggage and means as a minimalist traveler you may be able to travel with carry-on suitcase only / hand luggage only.

And if you are happy to have a more casual pant and want something slightly thicker than the Athleta black jogger is another superb choice for your Winter wardrobe capsule.

Fleece Lined Leggings

 One type of dress I love for a capsule wardrobe is the classic little black dress. This is one of those timeless pieces that every woman should have in their wardrobe, for travel or not.

Best Tops for Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobes

A basic tee, either long or short sleeve is an essential for a capsule wardrobe at any time of year. It is perfect as both a base layer and also a top layer on warmer Winter days.

Note : you could go with something with a graphic or illustration. Personally I am partial to a band tee. However for Europe you will find that plain t shirts are more in keeping with local styles. Also when using for layering basic t shirts in more neutral colors are better.

Merino Wool Base Layer

Merino wool is one of my favorite fabrics to include in a Winter capsule wardrobe. That is because provide extra warmth as they are an insulating fabric but is also compact unlike a thick knit.

Therefore it is easy to pack and doesn’t take up a lot of space in your case.

Turtleneck tops are particularly popular for Winter, and there are some great merino wool options so this is an absolute must for my list.

But if you are going somewhere that is extremely cold days you may also want to add a merino wool thermal base layer too!

Shirt / Shacket

Another great layering option is a plaid shirt or plaid shacket. This is a half way house between a regular plaid shirt and a jacket and usually is lined with fleece.

This can be either worn open with your base layer underneath, or done up at as a top.

Best Layers for Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Layers are probably the most important part of your winter capsule wardrobe. But what layers should you include? Our essentials for women are:

Cozy sweaters are synonomous with winter and are absolutely an essential for any Winter wardrobe. The difficulty in packing sweaters and jumpers for Winter capsule wardrobes is they take up lots of space in your case.

Therefore when we look at the best sweaters for travel we look at:

  • warmth vs bulk – I like to make sure the sweaters I pack are not bulky sweaters to make them easier to pack while also have some good thermal qualities
  • easy to layer – while I absolutely adore interesting sleeve shapes and batwing jumpers I don’t recommend packing them for capsule wardrobes. That is because they can feel bulky and uncomfortable to wear under coats. Therefore I pick a more fitted silhouette.

For my perfect cosy Winter sweater I like to pack items made of wool (especially merino wool), cashmere and fleece material.

Turtleneck sweaters are a good way of adding a detail into your silhouette while still being comfortable to wear under and over things. Cable knit sweaters are also a great way of adding some texture into your winter capsule wardrobe.

A fleece is another of my wardrobe essentials for Winter. Fleece is a great material for capsule wardrobes as they pack down really slim while being very warm.

They are also good for windy locations, and also dry quickly if you get caught in the rain.

Best Coats for Winter Wardrobes for Travel

And of course no Winter wardrobe is complete without a coat. Now depending on where you are going and what you are doing will depend on the coat you need. I either opt for a:

Puffer Jacket

A puffer jacket is perfect for those going to really cold destinations. I try and find one with some water resistance or water proofing as this is good for cold and wet places such as Iceland and Scotland in Winter.

My favorite brands for Winter puffer coats are Marmot and Columbia, as these are warm and durable.

Note : often these type of jackets can run a little small in their sizing. This with the fact that you are likely to be using lots of thicker layers underneath may mean you find it more comfortable to shop one size larger than normal.

Smart Wool Coat

However if you are traveling somewhere where you will be spending limited time doing outdoors activities and visiting places which may have a dress code i.e. afternoon teas or theatre, then you may want to change out the puffer jacket for a smarter wool coat.

Note : coats can be hard to travel with. If you are not planning on wearing your coat as part of your airport outfit because you are traveling from a warm to cold weather destination for example you will need to plan on how to pack your jacket. Best Shoes for your Winter Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

So now you know the clothes you should pack for your Winter travels, we turn our attention to shoes. Now shoes are important no matter which seasonal wardrobe you are packing but they are even more important in Winter.

When packing a pair pf shoes for Winter travel you need to make sure they have:

  • a good sole – in case of icy weather, a sole that can cope with slippery surfaces is really important.
  • some waterproofing / water resistance – in case of rainy winter weather.

Boots are my number one pick for Winter travel. I make sure they have a thick sole and waterproofing.

If I am traveling and visiting smarter locations then I love a knee high boot. However ankle boots are easier to pack and better for more outdoorsy itineraries.

If I am not doing a minimalist wardrobe I tend to pack both. Usually I will wear the knee-high boots as part of my airplane outfit and pack my ankle boots.

I tend to pick a leather pair with some waterproofing as my favorite winter sneaker for travel. My favorite brand for waterproof sneakers are Ecco.

What else to add to your Winter Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

So what else should you add to your Winter Capsule wardrobe? This section looks at both essentials and nice to have things for your Winter packing list.

Obviously underwear is an essential to any capsule wardrobe. Pants / knickers are obviosuly on this list and for bras we recommend having one bra in a neutral or flesh tone as it layers under everything. But a sports bra is also a good idea for those doing activities as part of their Winter vacation itinerary.

On top of this we recommend packing:

  • Thick socks – I like hiking socks in Winter as I get cold feet when sightseeing.
  • Thick Tights – to wear under dresses or skirts in the evening.

Hat, Scarf and Gloves set

I would also recommend taking with you a matching scarf and gloves set that match your winter coat to finish off the look.

We recommend making sure the gloves you bring have the electric conductor pad on the finer so you can still use your smart phone for taking photos and using things like google maps with your gloves on.

Traveling with jewelry can feel a bit like a minefield especially if you are worried about traveling with expensive or precious jewelry.

The type of jewelry you travel with is really a personal choice about what you feel comfortable with. However we think even traveling with some costume jewelry is a good idea to help you make your capsule wardrobe outfits look a bit different.

Crossbody Bag

A  crossbody bag,   the anti theft type is actually always on my packing lists especially for traveling in cities such as Rome and Barcelona.

It can add peace of mind for travellers by making you a harder target for pickpockets. When selecting a crossbody bag I would pick something in a neutral color such as brown, black or navy depending on the palette of your capsule wardrobe and think about one that can be sued throughout your seasonal capsule wardrobes.

Pashminas are my number one  travel essential for women  as they are so versatile as a great layering piece and are always part of my perfect fall capsule wardrobe.

Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe: How to Pack 10 Days in a Carry-On

Packing for trips is a mindful discipline of choosing between needs and wants. This January, I took a 10-day trip to Italy with only a carry-on. As if my bulky sweaters didn’t take up enough space, I also intended to leave extra space of souvenirs and a handbag purchase on the way back. With much thoughtful planning, I somehow made it all fit! Here is my formula for a winter travel capsule wardrobe that provided me all the basics I needed. Read to the end for additional space-saving tips and tricks!

The Bulkiest Layer: Coats & Jackets

With consistent 30-40 degree weather in Italy, I ended up only bringing a single mid-length puffer coat. The North Face Metropolis is a classic style that is warm, and reasonably priced. I wore my puffer to the airport, so it technically didn’t take up any suitcase space. If you want more coat options, consider also packing a quilted liner jacket . I brought an ‘Ultralight Down’ version from Uniqlo that was compact, and worked great as a standalone coat on warmer days. Meanwhile on the colder days, I could layer it underneath my puffer for added warmth.

Secondary Layers: Sweaters & Blouses

I packed a total of 3 sweaters, and 1 dressier top that I planned to wear 2-3 times each during the trip. These options helped me to get dressed with ease, and offered plenty of styling combinations. My top recommended brands for high-quality, reasonably priced sweaters are Quince , Everlane , and Uniqlo (which has the best fitted wool turtlenecks).

  • Fitted Wool Turtleneck (Neutral Color)
  • Thicker Sweater of Choice
  • Blouse – for a dressier look

These pieces make an effortless winter travel capsule wardrobe. You can mix and match with almost any bottom, and look chic for a day of shopping or sightseeing.

Base Layers: Undershirts

Undershirts are a great way to stay warm in the winter, and maximize your wardrobe on travel. Look for ones that are thin and fitted. They are effective at trapping warmth, but also feel (and look) invisible when layered underneath a sweater. The best part is they keep your secondary layers clean for more wears. Depending on how active I was during the day, I also re-wore my undershirts a few times.

These might need to be rotated more frequently, so I packed 4 for the trip. You can find great ones from Neiwai , Everlane (search for ‘micro rib’ tops), and Abercrombie . I also love Uniqlo’s Airism tops, but recommend shopping them in-stores because the inventory on the site is always very scarce.

Bottoms for Winter Travel

I felt that 3-4 pairs of pants were just right for the trip: 3 pairs of jeans (black / blue / one light color), and 1 pair of black leggings. One of the worst things we can do to denim is overwash them! In fact, Levi’s recommends washing one every 10 wears (unless they start to smell). So that pretty much makes them the perfect pants for travel. Linking some of my favorite Madewell styles below.

Packing 3 colors with me helped to maximize my outfit combinations for the trip. Meanwhile, I reserved my comfy leggings for days of long walking. I love Aerie for their well-priced and stylish leggings (reviewed HERE ).

2 Types of Shoes You Need for a Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe

With just a carry-on, I didn’t have the luxury of packing oversized boots. So for this part, I kept it simple and I think these two options served me well:

  • Neutral Sneakers – I love my platform Keds because they are well-cushioned, have a narrower look, and go with so many outfits.
  • Waterproof / Water Resistant Boots: Pick the right pair, and they can be super stylish with any outfit! While mine from Dolce Vita didn’t arrive in time, I would highly recommend them as they are lightweight, waterproof, and comfortable for walking longer distance.

Quick Notes : I loved the Huey H2O boots (first pair above), and found them quite comfortable for walking long distances. The heel of the Caster Boots (second pair) is heavier, and took me 2-3 wears to get used to the feeling.

Both are waterproof and comfy, but the Huey may be better suited for travel if you aren’t accustomed to wearing heeled booties as often. Style-wise, I found the Caster boots to look more feminine and leg-lengthening.

These Marc Fisher black rain boots are also very comfortable (though less breathable). Here is another simple affordable option if you don’t want leather.

Perfect Crossbody Bag for Travel

Accessories really make an outfit, and for me, I was so grateful I went with the MZ Wallace Crosby Pippa as my everyday travel bag (review HERE ). Although this versatile handbag comes with 3 straps, I only used the leather strap attachment on my trip. It was definitely meant to be a longer shoulder strap. However, when adjusted to its longest length, it made the perfectly situated crossbody.

I normally find that a lot of crossbody bags sit too low for me, but this one was at the perfect drop-down height where I could see everything I needed in organized compartments. The zipper glides very smoothly, and for such a small size, it is impressive how much this bag holds. I wore the regular sized Pippa (first), but also linked the larger size (second) below.

Additional Space-Saving Tips for Winter Travel

  • Be clever with how you fold your clothes . Pouch-folding and the Mari Kondo fold are two techniques I use when packing a suitcase. They help conserve space, and stabilize the shape of clothes to prevent wrinkles from developing.
  • Wear your bulkiest outfit to the airport. While I didn’t follow this step on my way there, I definitely did so on my way back, as I had more to carry. I would have much preferred leggings on a long flight, but it was the sacrifice I made to create more suitcase space.
  • Bring a spacious personal bag . I wore my trusted MZ Wallace Metro Deluxe Tote as a personal item, and it fit so much! This bag comes with a ton of inner and outer compartments, as well as a handy luggage sleeve. (I brought with me the Medium , but linking the Large below as well as the Travel Jimmy Duffel which I also love)
  • Hand-Washing is allowed on trips! The thought of doing laundry on vacation sounds unthinkable for some. However, hand-washing a few lightweight items is pretty quick and simple. If you are in the bind and running out of clothes, I would definitely consider it as an option. Nowadays, you can buy travel-sized laundry sheets , which take up hardly any space. I packed in my cosmetics bag, and definitely used it a few times.

As someone who tends to overpack, I can attest to the powers of a  travel capsule wardrobe . That’s why I’m breaking down how to build a winter capsule and sharing 3 example wardrobes, based on trip length. 

Put down your lengthy packing list. It’s time to meet your minimalist winter travel capsule wardrobe.

WHAT IS A WINTER TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE?

A winter travel capsule wardrobe is a thoughtful selection of warm clothing essentials that mix and match to create multiple flattering outfits.  It contains anywhere from 10-30 pieces including sweaters, thermals, versatile bottoms, and insulated outerwear. Adopting a capsule allows you to travel light(er) without sacrificing style. To get the most out of your capsule, I recommend packing items for each level of layering – more on that in a minute. 

WHY BOTHER BUILDING A WINTER TRAVEL WARDROBE

As a frequent flier, I’m no stranger to the trials of packing.  The point of a travel capsule wardrobe is to streamline the packing process so you have all the essentials for chic outfits without the overstuffed suitcase.

If you’re longing to be a carry-on-only traveler, read on. 

Benefit 1:  Stress-free packing.  I find packing much simpler when I have a predefined set of clothing that I know works seamlessly together. See how much faster packing goes once you have a capsule to work with. 

Benefit 2:  Less luggage to carry.  One of the most delightful perks of a winter travel capsule wardrobe is parting ways with bulky suitcases. Picture yourself gliding through terminals, unburdened by excess luggage. 

Benefit 3:  Effortless outfit creation.  When building a travel capsule, you choose each garment strategically, ensuring that, you’re dressed to kill no matter what combination you pull out. As someone who used to pack lots of clothing only to find that the pieces didn’t play well together, this is a game-changer.

HOW TO BUILD A WINTER TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE

1. check your itinerary.

Before you start throwing clothes into your capsule, consider the climate and the activities you have in mind. For instance, when I planned my winter trip to Whistler, Canada, I knew I needed clothes for skiing, après-ski activities, and perhaps a cozy evening by the fireplace. Certain winter destinations require thicker layers, so pull up that forecast to be sure.

2. SELECT YOUR COLOR PALETTE

Yes, even a minimalist winter travel capsule needs a color scheme that suits your style. For a winter trip, neutral tones like blacks, grays, browns, and whites are classic choices. When I prepared my Whistler wardrobe, I leaned towards whites and neutrals as they can be effortlessly mixed and matched.

3. CREATE YOUR CORE TRAVEL CLOSET

Now for the winning formula to create a winter travel capsule wardrobe. Craft your core closet aka the foundational pieces that form the backbone of your outfits.  We’ll break this down into three crucial layers: base, mid, and outerwear.

Select Base Pieces:  Start with your undergarments and foundational pieces. These should keep you warm and provide comfort against the skin. Think thermal tops, long johns, and moisture-wicking materials. I typically choose thermal tops and leggings as my base layer.

Select Mid Layer Pieces:  Your mid layer adds insulation and style to your ensemble. This includes sweaters, cardigans, and other items that can be paired with the base layer. Opt for versatility and warmth. I included sweaters and turtlenecks for my Whistler trip.

Select Outerwear Pieces:  Outerwear provides protection from the cold, wind, and possibly rain or snow. These are your parkas, your trench coats, the heavy hitters. For Whistler, I included a waterproof ski jacket and a warm winter coat.

4. MIX AND MATCH

A minimalist winter travel capsule gives you the ability to create numerous outfits from a few key pieces. Pair each item with the others to ensure they all harmonize together. In Canada, I knew I could pair my thermal layers with both casual outfits and ski gear, giving me options without adding bulk.

5. TEST YOUR CAPSULE

Before zipping up your suitcase, try on the outfits you’ve planned. If something doesn’t feel right or versatile enough, swap it out. You want to ensure each piece makes you feel confident and comfortable. This edit phase isn’t technically a must. But I highly recommend it if you’re new to travel capsule wardrobes.

THE WEEKEND WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE

For a short and sweet winter weekend getaway, simplicity and style are key. As a recovering overpacker, a travel capsule has made weekend trip carry-on much more manageable. Let’s build a weekend winter travel wardrobe together. 

Total Pieces:  12

Unique Outfits:  With smart mixing and matching, you can create 18 unique outfits .

TOPS (5 PIECES):

2 Thermal Tops:  These will form your base layer and keep you warm during the chilly days and nights.

2 Sweaters  (different weights): Choose sweaters of varying thickness to layer and adapt to changing temperatures.

1 Cardigan or Hoodie:  A versatile piece for layering and adding a cozy touch to your outfits.

BOTTOMS (3 PIECES):

1 Pair of Jeans:  A classic choice for versatility and style. Choose blue or black depending on your color palette. 

1 Pair of Leggings:  Ideal for layering under maxi skirts or wearing with longer tops for comfort and warmth.

1 Skirt or Dress: Opt for a maxi skirt or dress to for a night out or a fancy dinner.

OUTERWEAR (2 PIECES):

1 Waterproof Jacket (if needed):  If your getaway involves outdoor activities, a waterproof ski jacket will keep you dry and warm.

1 Warm Winter Coat:  A cozy coat to keep you snug during walks and explorations in the winter chill. A double-breasted coat often earns a spot in my rotation.

SHOES (2 PAIRS):

1 Pair of Walking Boots:  Durable, comfortable boots built for walking and outdoor adventures.

1 Pair of Casual Shoes:  Casual footwear for lighter activities. Trusted sneakers, you’re on deck.

For a 10-day winter trip, focus on versatility and multi-functional pieces. Let’s curate a minimalist winter travel capsule that ensures you have stylish outfits for each day without over-packing.

Unique Outfits:  You can create 24 unique outfits with this winter travel capsule wardrobe.

TOPS (6 PIECES):

2-WEEK WINTER TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE

Planning a 2-week winter adventure? Maybe you need a travel capsule for a Europe trip. Below is a smart travel capsule wardrobe to keep you fashion-forward with less than 25 items. 

Total Pieces:  22

Unique Outfits:  This powerhouse of a travel capsule lets you create 80 unique outfits (not even including shoes in the calculation).

TOPS (8 PIECES):

3 Thermal Tops:  Base layers for warmth throughout the day.

3 Sweaters (different weights) : Pack one light, medium, and heavy option. Merino wool or cashmere are great light options. Wool and cable knit lean more medium to heavy. 

2 Blouses:  I love having a couple of dressy top options for added elegance. A silk high neck or velvet variety are winter favorites.

BOTTOMS (6 PIECES):

2 Pairs of Jeans:  Take it from me, you won’t regret packing a couple of flattering pairs of denim. 

1 Pair of Trousers:  For an elevated look, bring wide-leg or tapered trousers along. 

1 Pair of Leggings:  Leggings feature heavily in my athleisure capsule but their draw extends to travel as well. Because they take up little space, you can get away with bringing more than one pair. 

1 Skirt:  Bring at least one skirt to add variety. I can confirm that maxis pair beautifully with turtlenecks. 

1 Dress:  A chic, all-in-one option for a formal outing.

OUTERWEAR (4 PIECES):

1 Waterproof Jacket:  Ideal for outdoor activities and protection against the elements.

1 Warm Winter Coat:  A pea coat or trench coat are timeless options.

1 Stylish Blazer:  If structured blazers aren’t your thing, try a soft wool variety sans buttons. 

1 Vest:  Adds a layer of warmth without bulk.

1 Pair of Walking Boots:  Look for a water-resistant pair so you can navigate the elements with ease.

When curating your winter travel capsule wardrobe, having the right clothing essentials can make all the difference.  I broke this packing list into four crucial categories: base layers, mid layers, outerwear, and accessories.

BASE LAYERS

Insulated Thermal Tops and Bottoms : Essential for trapping body heat and keeping you warm as your first layer of defense against the cold.

Moisture-Wicking Underwear and Bras : Ensures comfort by keeping moisture away from the skin, a fundamental part of your base layer.

Wool or Thermal Socks : Providing insulation and keeping your feet cozy, these are a must for any winter trip.

Fitted Turtleneck : A versatile and warm mid layer that adds style and additional insulation.

Silk Blouse : Stylish and cozy, silk blouses offer a luxurious mid-layer option for various occasions during your trip.

Wrap Sweater : A fashionable mid-layer option that can be dressed up or down for different looks.

Fleece-Lined Leggings : A comfortable and warm option to layer under skirts or pants, adding an extra barrier against the cold.

Tailored Trousers : Versatile pants that can be paired with various tops for different occasions during your trip.

Quality Winter Coat : Your primary defense against winter elements; make sure it’s warm, insulated, and preferably waterproof.

Trench Coat : A stylish option for milder winter days, providing both warmth and a classic look.

Parka : Ideal for extreme cold and snowy conditions, offering maximum insulation and protection.

ACCESSORIES

Scarves, Hats, and Gloves : Crucial for protecting your neck, head, and ears from cold winds. Also an arguably low-effort way to weave in some color, if that’s your thing.

Warm Headband or Ear Muffs : An alternative to hats, providing warmth and style without flattening your hair. This goes out to my fellow curly girls who can’t stuff their tresses under a beanie.

HOW TO PACK FOR A WINTER TRIP IN A CARRY-ON

If fitting all those cozy wonders into a humble carry-on sounds daunting, don’t worry. A streamlined winter travel capsule wardrobe is the solution. Let’s master the art of minimalist packing.

STEP 1: PLAN YOUR ACTIVITIES, NOT JUST THE DAYS

Begin with a clear understanding of the activities and events you’ll partake in during your trip. This will dictate the variety of outfits you need. From exploring the snowy mountains to sipping hot cocoa by the fireplace, plan for each scenario.

STEP 2: BUILD YOUR CORE CLOSET

Want to pack with purpose? Here’s a formula for your core closet:

Base Layers (Pack 3):  These are your foundational pieces, like thermal tops and leggings. Choose ones that mix and match well.

Mid Layers (Pack 4):  Think sweaters, blouses, and casual tops. Aim for versatility; each piece should pair with multiple bottoms.

Outerwear (Pack 2):  Include a waterproof jacket and a warm winter coat. If lighter layers are in order, pull in a stylish blazer and a vest that complement your mid layers.

Bottoms (Pack 4):  Opt for a mix of jeans, leggings, and a skirt or dress. Ensure they go well with all your tops.

Shoes (Pack 3):  Walking boots, a pair of sneakers, and dressy shoes.

For a weekend trip to Sedona, we packed winter hiking clothes.

STEP 3: CREATE LAYER LEVELS

To maximize space, plan a three-tier layering system:

  • Base Level: Thermal tops and leggings.
  • Mid Level: Sweaters, blouses, and tops.
  • Outerwear: Coats, vests, and jackets.

STEP 4: ROLL, DON’T FOLD

Rolling your clothes rather than folding them saves space. And, as I have been reliably informed by travel enthusiasts,  rolling also reduces wrinkles in your fabrics.  Another pro tip- place heavier items at the bottom near the wheels, and lighter ones on top.

STEP 5: MINIMIZE BULKY ITEMS

Winter packing comes with the attendant bulky items. Fortunately, we can tackle the trouble in two ways.  First, make friends with a good vacuum-sealed bag . I keep a few of these in my carry-on and use them to suck all the puff out of my parkas before packing. Just make sure you’ll have access to a vacuum when it’s time to repack.

Second, wear your bulky items to the airport.  The chunky boots or long down coat may be a pain to take off through TSA, but keeping them outside of your luggage frees up valuable space.

For a weekend getaway, a slim winter travel capsule wardrobe of 10-15 pieces works wonders. For a 10-day trip, aim for a capsule of 15-20 pieces, striking a balance between variety and compactness. Now, if you’re embarking on a two-week adventure, aim for a range of 20-25 pieces. This accommodates the longer duration while still staying within the confines of a carry-on.

On my recent weeklong jaunt to Whistler, Canada I brought about 20 pieces including snow pants, turtlenecks, trousers, and cozy sweaters.

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or it’s your first time taking a trip, figuring out how to pack light can be an intimidating challenge. I’ve taken dozens of trips around the world and after years of checking a bag, I finally made the switch to carry-on only. Even for long trips! Which is how I’ve been able to master my travel capsule wardrobe for the fall/winter.

A carry-on is a great way to avoid checked bag fees and the anxiety of potentially losing your luggage. But the lack of space can be hard to pack especially when heading to a destination that’s a bit chillier when bulkier items are often needed. Lucky for you I’ve mastered the perfect travel capsule wardrobe for the fall/winter months and I’m excited to share it with you today. The info below will show you 18+ carry-on outfits you can create with only a handful of items which will make packing a breeze so you can enjoy your trip.

How Do You Make A Capsule Wardrobe For A Trip?

There are 3 main factors you want to consider when making a travel capsule wardrobe for a trip.

Is It Versatile? This is key for any type of capsule wardrobe but especially one you’ll use for travel. For example, you’ll want a shirt that can be dressed up for dinner or down for a walking tour. This is where it’s all about maximizing every item’s potential and making sure they can be mixed and matched with other items easily.

Is It Comfortable? When I’m on the go, comfort is one of my biggest priorities. I refuse to wear anything that makes me uncomfortable, inside or out, which is why I always opt for pieces with soft fabrics that aren’t overly restricting. All of the items you bring in your fall/winter travel capsule wardrobe should be pieces you’re familiar with or pieces that you are confident will be consistently comfortable throughout your trip.

Is It Packable? This is where you want to focus on lightweight materials. Now I know this can be tough when packing for a trip to a chillier destination. But that’s where layers come in, so don’t worry. With the packing list you’ll find below, you’ll see that all of the items are able to be layered allowing for maximum warmth and space in your carry-on.

How Many Pieces Are In A Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

There’s no hard and fast rule about how many pieces are in a travel capsule wardrobe. It really comes down to how much you want to fit in your bag. In this article, I have 17 items (tops, bottoms, outerwear, shoes, bags) all of which can be easily rolled into a carry-on or worn on the plane/train.

I recommend being a bit cautious of how much you jam-pack in your carry-on for two reasons. A. It’s not fun lugging a heavy carry-on around. And B. Some airlines are pretty strict with weighing carry-ons. I find that in the States I can get away with an overweight carry-on (they rarely weigh, in my experience) but internationally, they are much stricter. So be sure to follow this guide to pack smartly!

What Pieces Are Good For A Fall/Winter Capsule Wardrobe?

These are all the pieces I recommend bringing to maximize your style, and space, with your travel capsule wardrobe.

Leather is better for fall weather while a wool coat will keep you warm in colder destinations. Pack a scarf and some clothes for the especially frigid destinations.

Fall/Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe Outfits

When I first wrote this article and recorded this video, my goal was to come up with 18 outfits. Well lucky for you, I actually came up with even more! 20 to be exact. Let’s get into them.

This is the perfect comfy airport outfit. You should choose which coat works best based on the weather of the destination you’re headed to. I always prioritize comfort over everything so this airport outfit is perfect for making sure I’m comfy no matter how long my travels may be.

Leggings aren’t a huge part of my wardrobe but this outfit would be perfect for a quick errand that’s a bit more elevated than wearing a sweatshirt. You can never really go wrong with leggings and a cute cardigan.

Definitely watch the video to see what this looks like. I didn’t love the button-down unbuttoned so I ended up tying it for a little *Britney Spears* moment. It was cute! But now let’s move on from leggings and get into some more practical outfits for everyday looks.

I wrote this outfit with the button-down open. It’s a simple, classic look for a more relaxed day.

I love the square neckline of this top! It’s incredibly flattering. I paired it with the black cardigan but it would likely be fine on its own as this top has very thick material and is warm. In the video, I show you how I cuff the sleeves around the cardigan which gives the look a bit of contrast.

You’ll probably notice that the black cardigan is one of the most popular items in all of these outfits and that’s because of its versatility. You’ll see here how well it layers with this top and jeans making it a must-have in any travel capsule wardrobe.

Let’s stick with the smokey blue/grey top for now. When I added the button-down, it gave a “scientist” look which I respect, but that’s not the vibe I’m going for. I ended up tucking the top in to make it a bit more sleek. Check out the video to see what I mean!

A white button-down is not something I typically incorporate into my outfits so I’m challenging myself to make as many looks as I can with this item. For this outfit, I tucked it in and paired it with the black cardigan. It was a bit corporate for my style but I’d probably wear it to a museum or out to a cafe when I want a more preppy look.

Time to break out the multi-color sweater! I paired this with the button down which helped make this outfit super warm. I also did a little French tuck with the sweater which you can see in the video.

This bodysuit is warm enough so I don’t think I would need a layer depending on the weather. But if you do, the black cardigan is a great option. In the video, I show you how to tuck this cardigan for an even cuter look than simply wearing it buttoned up or open.

This is a great casual outfit, especially if you style the button-down half-tucked into your pants. I love doing a half-tuck, it really balances the outfit well without being overly serious.

This is probably one of my favorite outfits on this list. Can you tell I love dark neutrals?! The balance of the brown and black is perfection. Plus, I love these wide-leg cargo pant.

These are two of my favorite pieces put together. Especially with the black bag, this look is the closest thing to perfection in my eyes.

I feel so at home with an all-black outfit. I’m trying hard to branch out and wear color but this is truly where I feel at peace (dramatic, yes). You can’t go wrong with this look!

If you need a little bit of “color” to break up the all-black outfit, simply add the smokey blue/grey top for a bit of contrast.

Layering the white button-down under this sweater is the perfect way to stay warm!

Wearing this button-down half-tucked or folded and tucked (check out the video to see what I mean) is a good option for this look. The black and white is a great contrast of course.

This is a great option to make these pants the star of the show by balancing them with all-black pieces.

A neutral pair of pants with a fun print? You can never go wrong. At first, I tried to pair this with a layer underneath but I didn’t love the look. so I decided to wear it with just the button-down shirt in a half-tuck. This might be a bit chilly, so I do recommend wearing a warm coat with this look if you’ll be heading outside.

I really like the contrast of the white and beige so throw a black Caridgan on to balance out the black and you’ll have a cute preppy look.

What jewelry to bring when traveling?

I always bring a few gold rings, bracelets, and a necklace when I’m traveling. Frankly, these are all pieces I wear 24/7 anyway, so I just wear them on the plane. However, to spice up all of these neutral outfits, I always bring a couple of fun earrings to add a bit of personality to my look. How do get wrinkles out when traveling?

Wrinkles are inevitable when packing everything up into a small carry-on. I always bring Downy Wrinkle Refresh Spray on a trip with me. This bottle is TSA-friendly and lasts super long. All you need to do is spray it on your clothes, “wipe” the wrinkles out and the clothes will be smooth and wrinkle-free. If it leaves a wet spot, don’t worry because it will try in a few minutes and won’t leave any type of mark.

How to Pack a Capsule Wardrobe for Winter Travel

A capsule wardrobe for winter travel streamlines your packing process and allows you to enjoy your winter European vacation without the stress of over-packing. Winter European travel can be a magical experience, but it can also be a source of stress when it comes to packing. With colder weather and the need for bulkier clothing and accessories, it can be tempting to over-pack and end up with a bulky suitcase to lug around. But, it doesn’t have to be that way!

What is a travel capsule wardrobe? A travel capsule wardrobe is a collection of versatile, mix and match pieces that can be worn in multiple ways, allowing you to pack light and stay stylish on your trip. The idea is to choose a limited number of pieces that can be worn in a variety of combinations, eliminating the need for a bulky wardrobe and different “outfits” for each day of travel.

1. Pack Thin Layers vs. bulky layers

When planning your winter travel capsule wardrobe, focus on selecting thin layers vs. bulky layers. By choosing thin layers you will not only be warm but you won’t weigh down your suitcase with bulky layers.

Layering is key for staying warm in colder weather. Fabrics like merino wool or cashmere are lightweight yet do a stellar job at providing warmth and style. Invest in a few key layering pieces, like cashmere or merino wool sweaters , and bring a variety of lightweight tops, sweaters, and jackets to layer with them. Functional fleece is a mid-layer option if worn underneath a coat.

Additionally, you may require thin base layers that will provide much of your warmth. For more on winter layering, read my blog post on how to strategically layer your travel outfits for winter.

2. Choose versatile pieces

When it comes to creating a travel capsule wardrobe for winter European travel, the key is to choose pieces that can be worn in multiple ways. Look for items like classic coats, button down shirts, and jeans or wool trousers that can be dressed up or down, and opt for neutral colors that can be easily paired with other items. Keep it classic and neutral with trend items sprinkled in.

3. Select the right outerwear

In this winter travel capsule there’s two outerwear options: a wool coat and a minimal pack-able puffer. A heavy-duty and classic camel coat is the ultimate in functionality and style. This coat will keep you warm and bring together all your outfit options.

Your coat is the most visible layer of your winter travel outfit so choose it wisely. The packable puffer can be layered under the coat for extremely cold temperatures or worn on its own on days where the weather permits. Puffer jackets are widely worn throughout Europe so you won’t look out of place. Don’t forget to bring a scarf, gloves, and a hat to keep your head, hands, and neck warm.

4. Minimize Footwear

Footwear takes up the most room in your luggage. Keep it light by choosing versatile and functional footwear and include only two pairs in your winter travel capsule. Pack a pair of waterproof boots and pair them with wool socks. If you’ll be experiencing snow or rain or extremely cold temperatures a heavy duty, lined boot may be in order. Conversely, if you’ll be traveling somewhere with milder temperatures a sneaker or other casual yet comfortable shoe will work.

5. Edit your travel capsule

Take note of your travel activities and edit your travel clothing options accordingly. You most likely won’t need anything more than casual clothes on a hiking trip. If you’ll be doing more big city sightseeing activities then your travel wardrobe should reflect that. Don’t be tempted to pack “just in case” items!

6. Add statement pieces

While a travel capsule wardrobe is all about versatility and simplicity, that doesn’t mean it has to be boring! Add a few statement pieces, like a bold coat or a colorful scarf, to add some personality to your outfits.

7. Packing Tips

When it comes to actually packing your travel capsule wardrobe, there are a few tips and tricks you can use to maximize space and stay organized. Consider using packing cubes and compression bags to keep your clothes organized and wrinkle-free. I don’t normally recommend compression bags but I acknowledge winter wardrobes can be bulky, so use your best judgement. Roll your clothing instead of folding it to save space, and utilize every nook and cranny of your suitcase for added storage.

  • Bottom layer 1 , Bottom layer 2 – This winter travel capsule includes 2 pairs of denim pants. If you are wearing bottom base layers underneath make sure the style can accommodate the extra layer.
  • Dress – Winterize your dress by wearing base layers underneath or layering with tights and a turtleneck.
  • Optional piece: This 11 piece winter travel capsule allows room for 1-2 additional items. This could be another bottom layer , dress or a mid-layer like a puffy vest .

White long sleeve top.

A classic white long sleeve top is one of the essential items you should always have in your winter capsule wardrobe. A simple long-sleeve top is a great base layer and can be switched up depending on your outfit or the weather. They work with a variety of different outfits and styles so you don’t have to worry about them being too “last season.”

Striped Long-sleeved Shirt

I love the look of a striped tee. It layers well under almost anything so works as a base layer for a number of outfits in your capsule. You can wear under the button downs, sweaters, or even on its own for a classic look.

Long-Sleeved Solid / Waffle-knit Shirt 

A long-sleeved waffle-knit shirt is another good base layer to include in your winter wardrobe. These are great for layering under larger winter coats and give you that great casual look when you don’t want to put too much effort into your daily outfits.

Basic Base Layers

Some other basic items that you should have in your seasonal wardrobe are some good tank tops and bra tops. You might not think of tank tops when you think of winter, but they are a great way to keep some of the cold out when you’re layering them underneath a chunky sweater that isn’t the best at stopping airflow. A knit bra top or tank top will help keep you warm without causing you to overheat when you head back inside.

Button Down Chambray Shirt

I bring a chambray shirt on almost every trip. They are great for layering or wearing alone. In the case of winter travel, you can put any of your base layers underneath. Or, you can wear it under a big chunky sweater with the collar peaking out.

4 Bottoms   (3 Pants and 1 Dress)

After the 5 tops, I choose 4 bottoms, and for this wardrobe the bottoms include pants and one winter dress.  4 Bottoms are listed below.  If they do not resonate with your personal style or the type of your trip, I have included some other bottoms you could swap in.

Fleece lined leggings.

I bring a pair of fleece-lined leggings instead of tights. Tou can wear them as tights under your winter dress. When you wear them with your boots, no one will know! You can also wear them as the base of an outfit with a slim profile and stay warm because of the fleece lining.

Boyfriend Jeans 

Boyfriend jeans are another classic pants option that will work great in your winter capsule wardrobe. You can pair these with different layers and top options, as well as different shoes. It’s just a good idea to make sure that your jeans don’t have rips in them because they definitely won’t keep you warm if the cold air can blow right through them. 

Wide-leg pants 

Wide-leg pants are having a comeback moment right now and there are a lot of different ways you can style them, both in the summer and the winter. If skinny jeans have never been your thing, some looser-fitting wide-leg jeans may be just what you’re looking for. 

Winter Dress 

Having a winter dress in your arsenal is a great option when you want to dress it up a little but still stay warm. If you’re going to be doing a lot of walking in cold weather, you might want to opt for a pair of jeans to keep the warmth in, but on days when you need to look a little more formal, a winter dress paired with some tights will get the job done. 

Alternative Pants for your Winter Travel Capsule

Blue or black skinny jeans .

A basic pair of blue or black skinny jeans work great in the winter season because they pair well with almost everything and they’ll still be in fashion next season. A great go-to outfit that requires very little effort is a pair of black skinny jeans,  an oversized sweater, and a pair of classic black boots. 

Wool Trousers 

Wool trousers are a great way to give yourself a little bit of extra warmth in the winter while still keeping it stylish. Wool pants often come in some fun and interesting prints, so they can be an easy way to spice up an outfit without having to add too many accessories.

Cropped Blue Jeans 

Since you’re more likely to wear boots in the winter, cropped jeans work great so you don’t have to roll up your regular-length jeans too many times. Cropped blue jeans with a smart pair of Chelsea boots is a very stylish outfit that will make you fit right in among European locals.

So I changed this winter capsule wardrobe up a bit here, normally we have 3 dresses.  I am not a huge winter dress wearer so I swapped the dresses for additional base layers for layering and additional winter capsule wardrobe options.

Sweaters in the Winter Capsule Wardrobe

Oversized sweater  .

Oversized sweaters have definitely become more popular in the last few years. They are great versatile items in your wardrobe because they can be dressed up or down depending on your mood. As the cold weather approaches, make sure you have some cozy sweaters that you can layer with other pieces. 

Turtleneck Sweater  

A basic black turtleneck sweater is a great way to create an effortlessly chic look in the colder months. Invest in a basic, well-fitting turtleneck and we guarantee that it will become something you wear on a regular basis. Plus, there’s the added benefit ofextra warmth in your neck which can make a big difference on cold days. 

Belted or Long Cardigan

A belted or long cardigan can be a great way to add dimension and layers to any outfit. If you’re going to be outside a lot during your trip, you might want to opt for a heavier winter coat. However, if you just need something that will give you a little extra warmth in a place that isn’t very cold, these are a great option. 

At She Packs Lite, we follow the rule of three when it comes to shoes in your travel capsule. And winter is fun because we get to wear BOOTS!  As a native Minnesotan, I get excited in the fall because I get to take my boots out.  For the sample capsule we chose two pair of boots and a pair of sneakers.  Similar to the We like all of these shoe options a lot for a winter wardrobe, but it’s important to choose shoes that work well for what you’re planning on doing during your vacation.

Chelsea boots .

Chelsea boots are low-fitting boots that work with all kinds of pant fits. These boots are a classic for any fall or winter wardrobe. Chelsea boots are one of those quality items that match with any outfit, and they’re an easy way to look stylish without a lot of effort.

Knee-high Boots 

Knee-high boots are a popular option for footwear in the colder months because you can wear them with a ton of different outfits. Many people like to pair them with a pair of skinny jeans, but you can also use them to keep your legs warm if you decide to dress it up and go with a skirt or winter dress look.

White Sneakers  

White street sneakers are something that we mention in a lot of our other travel posts and travel capsule guides. You can usually find basic white sneakers for a great price and you’re sure to get great use out of them. These are a great option if you’re going to be doing a lot of walking, but if there’s snow in the forecast, you might want to opt for a warmer, waterproof choice of shoes.

Shoes to Swap for your Winter Travel Capsule

Combat boots .

Combat boots aren’t for everyone, but if you’re someone who likes to keep your outfits a little funky and functional, a pair of Doc Martens or combat boots are a comfortable way to do so. These boots work great with more form-fitting pants and they’re a good way to protect your feet from the elements. 

Printed Flats 

Again, flats won’t keep your feet very warm or dry, but if you need a statement piece or a cute pair of shoes for dinner, flats are a good go-to. Another great thing about them is that they take up very little space in your bag so you’ll have room for other clothing items that might take up a little more space. 

Warm Winter Boots 

Having a good, reliable pair of winter boots is essential, not only for traveling but for everyday life if you happen to live somewhere that gets snow regularly in the winter. High-quality boots are usually a bit of an investment, but as the holiday season is approaching, you might be able to add some warm winter boots to your wishlist and be able to use them for years to come. 

2 & 1: Various Accessories 

When we think about accessories in the wintertime, it’s not all about the fun jewelry and sunglasses that often accompany summer wardrobes. For one, any jewelry that you wear is probably going to get swallowed up by the various layers you have on in a given day. However, there are a few accessories that you should make essential components in your winter wardrobe capsule.

Leather Purse or Backpack 

Choosing a good bag is key. In the winter when you may get caught in rain or snow, a suede bag is probably not the best choice. Snow can not only ruin a bag but its contents if it gets too wet. Leather bags are naturally pretty waterproof, so they’ll protect your personal belongings and match with almost any outfit you pair them with.

Infinity Scarf or Wool Scarf 

If you live in a cold climate already, you know that a warm scarf is a must for the winter. How many times have you gotten your necklaces tangled in a turtleneck before giving up and taking off all of the jewelry you had on? Jewelry can be a great way to accessorize in the warmer months when more of your skin is exposed, but in the winter it can just make things more complicated. Keep your jewelry options to a minimum in the winter and save the bold necklaces for the summer. 

Boot Toppers

Boot toppers are a fun addition to any winter wardrobe. You wear them tucked into the top of your boots and they peak out. You can add a pop of color or an alpine pattern to make any outfit a little more fun.

Beanie and Warm Hat

A beanie or another kind of warm hat is another must-have in a winter wardrobe, especially when you’re traveling. We lose a lot of heat from our heads, so if you’re braving the cold to see some local architecture or historical monuments, you want to make sure that you’re staying warm. A good beanie will keep your head warm and hide a bad hair day if you’re having one. 

As you might be able to tell, a lot of our winter wardrobe accessories have to do with function more than style. That’s true; making smart clothing choices in the winter can make the difference between a great trip and a miserable one. If you feel like your outfit needs a little pop of color, pick a colorful pair of gloves that will give your outfit a little something extra.

Finally, you will need a good coat for your winter capsule wardrobe. Depending on your trip and the needs you need to fill for warmth and weather, we recommend one of these staple items for your next trip. 

Camel Coat 

A camel coat is a great choice for a coat in the wintertime, and they often come in a lot of different fits. If you prefer your coats to be a bit longer to help shield you from the harsh wind, you’ll have no problem finding one. A camel coat has a way of making an outfit look instantly put together, so it’s no wonder why they made it on our list.

Wool Blazer 

A wool blazer is another way to make yourself look put together and professional no matter what setting you’re in. A plaid wool blazer not only works amazing when you’re traveling, but you can use it to accessorize when you get home and have to go back to the office. 

Heavy Winter Coat 

If you need warmth, there’s no other way to go than a heavy winter coat. Something heavy and hooded works great at keeping you warm and comfortable during your travels. And, if you’re going to be spending a lot of time outside you will want to be warm and cozy.

Trench Coat 

Trench coats are a classic outerwear choice so if you got one last year, it’ll work this year too. When you pair a trench coat with a well-fitting pair of jeans and some cute boots, you’ll look effortlessly chic. However, they do take up quite a lot of room in bags. If you plan on bringing one on your next trip, we recommend wearing it on the plane to help save space.

A capsule wardrobe does change every season, especially when your climate changes.  Make sure to take the seasons into account when you are creating your travel capsule wardrobe. For example, your  summer travel capsule will be very different from your winter travel capsule. The weather and activities you will do on your vacations will be different meaning you need different clothes. 

What pieces do you need for a winter capsule wardrobe?

If you use this guide, 27 is a great number! You have a fixed number of clothing items per category to ensure you’re not overpacking. These items serve as a good base.  With this base you can switch up items if you plan on taking more than one trip this winter. 

Do capsule wardrobes work?

Yes!  Every trip I take I plan a capsule wardrobe.  I even use them at home.  I even plan out an approximately 50 piece capsule each season.  It does take a couple of hours at the beginning of each season. That said, the rest of the season getting dressed is a breeze! I only choose quality items that I feel good in, so I feel confident. Getting dressed is easy, and it is fun to find a couple of trendy items each season for a little extra pizazz.

Building a core wardrobe of matching basics will help you pare down your packing list and travel with just a carry on backpack , saving time and money.

Plus, since your clothing is meant to mix and match, a capsule wardrobe makes figuring out what you want to wear that much easier—you can recombine any pieces you like into a fresh outfit.

What Is a Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of basic, functional clothing that won’t go out of style . Each item should be multi-purpose and compatible with the rest of the wardrobe. Think versatile staples , not this season’s must haves .

An ideal travel capsule wardrobe will also consist of a small number of quality items that can withstand the rigors of life on the go. You shouldn’t need to replace everything on your next trip.

Finally, you should genuinely like every item in your capsule wardrobe. Remember, simple and functional don’t have to mean ugly. You want to feel good about reaching for these pieces again and again.

Choose the Right Bag

Pack for One Week

Aim for clothes that are easy to maintain. Vacation is too short to waste on trips to the dry cleaner.

Invest in Quality Materials and Craftsmanship

A high-quality t-shirt can immediately elevate your outfit. You also don’t want ripped seams and lost buttons on the road, so don’t cheap out on the basics. Opt for well-made items that you can count on for many trips to come.

Avoid fast fashion, which won’t hold up in a capsule wardrobe.

Simplify Your Color Palette

Keep your capsule wardrobe within a matching (and ideally neutral) color palette, so you don’t have to decide which clothes to wear together. Leave bright hues and wild patterns as accent pieces or for the rest of your closet at home.

Pick Timeless Cuts

Remember, a good capsule wardrobe is made up of a small number of durable, classic pieces. Go for timeless silhouettes that make you feel comfortable and confident, and don’t waste energy worrying about the latest trends.

Consider Tailoring 

Proper fit can make all the difference between looking sloppy and looking chic. Hem pants, shorten sleeves, and take in waistbands to add polish to even the most basic outfits.

You’ll be getting a lot of use out of these pieces, so a trip to the tailor is worth the cost.

Our basic capsule wardrobe packing list will work for most kinds of trips. We’ve based this list off of our ultimate carry on packing list , which is designed to last a week in a carry on . You can mix and match items and lists to build one that makes the most sense for you and your travels.

We’ve also included additional packing lists for business travelers , outdoor adventurers, and those heading to extreme climates below.

Women’s Travel Capsule Wardrobe

  • 3 comfortable, casual t-shirts or tank tops
  • 2 blouses for dinners, formal outings, etc.
  • 1 light jacket or fleece
  • 3 bottoms, at least one of which can be dressed up and down
  • 6 pairs of underwear
  • 6 pairs of socks
  • 2-3 bras (including 1 sports bra; stick to smooth, skin-toned fabrics that won’t show through your tops or require delicate cleaning)
  • 1 pair of multi-use shoes for walking and everyday use
  • 1 pair of “nice” shoes (flats, booties, fancy sandals, etc.)
  • 1 pair of athletic shorts
  • Optional: 1 pair of exercise shoes (tie or clip these to the outside of your bag to save space)
  • Optional: 1 midi skirt , maxi skirt, or lightweight dress (if you’re traveling somewhere cold, add a pair of tear-resistant black tights )

Men’s Travel Capsule Wardrobe

  • 3 comfortable, casual t-shirts
  • 1 button-up shirt for dinners, formal outings, etc. 
  • 3 bottoms , at least one of which can be dressed up and down
  • 1 pair of “nice” shoes (oxfords, loafers, etc.)

Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Use this packing list for beach vacations , cruises, and other warm-weather trips.

  • 2-3 casual, comfortable t-shirts or tank tops in breathable fabrics (skip long-sleeve tops)
  • 1-2 short-sleeved blouses or button-up shirts
  • 3 bottoms, at least one of which can be dressed up and down (consider breezy pants, shorts, or lightweight skirts )
  • 2-6 pairs of socks (If you plan on lounging at the beach all day, you can cut this number down to two: the pairs you’ll wear on your roundtrip flights)
  • 2-3 bras (sports bra and everyday)
  • 1 pair of flip flops or walkable sandals (if you’ll be doing any sort of hiking or water sports, make sure to get sandals that you can secure to your foot)
  • 1 pair of “nice” sandals or shoes
  • 1 baseball cap or sun hat
  • 2 bathing suits (one to wear while the other is drying)
  • 1 beach cover up (a lightweight sarong, beach dress, or shorts/top combo)
  • 1 lightweight cardigan, gauzy button up, or other layering top (you don’t need a heavy or insulated jacket for hot-weather trips, but should still bring a light cover-up for air-conditioning and unexpected weather changes)

Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Use this packing list for winter travel, especially if you’ll be spending time sightseeing outdoors.

  • 1-2 comfortable, casual t-shirts for layering
  • 2 long-sleeved base layers for particularly cold days
  • 1 long-sleeved button-up shirt or blouse for dinners, formal outings, etc. 
  • 1 sweater , fleece, or hoodie
  • 1 packable puffer jacket for added insulation (depending on how cold and wet your destination is, you may need to bring an additional coat or shell to protect against rain and wind)
  • 3 bottoms , at least one of which can be dressed up and down 
  • 1 pair of weather resistant boots (duck boots, Blundstones , etc.)
  • 1 pair of “nice,” closed-toe shoes
  • 6 pairs of tall socks
  • 1 pair water-resistant gloves
  • Neck gaiter or scarf
  • Optional: long johns or leggings to wear under pants on extremely cold days

Business Travel Capsule Wardrobe

If your travel includes regular meetings, in person or online, consider adding the following to items your capsule wardrobe:

  • 2 collared dress shirts or blouses in wrinkle-resistant fabric (having two means you can rotate while one’s in the wash)
  • 2 professional bottom-half pieces, like wrinkle-resistant slacks or knee-length skirts
  • 1 travel blazer
  • 2 pairs of dress socks (if you’ll have in-person meetings)
  • 1 pair of comfortable dress shoes, pumps, or block-heeled sandals
  • Optional: 1 pair of earrings (think: simple studs or small hoops that will go with multiple outfits; don’t bring anything valuable)

Adventure Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Use this packing list if you plan to spend a lot of time in the great outdoors:

  • 3 t-shirts or tank tops in performance fabrics like merino wool  
  • 1 packable puffer jacket or fleece (plus climate-specific gear if necessary)
  • 2 pairs wool hiking socks (yes, in addition to your other socks; you won’t want to spend the evening lounging in the same grimy socks you wore all day on the trail)
  • 2 sports bras (to rotate while one’s in the wash)
  • 1-2 pairs of athletic shorts
  • 1 pair of quick-drying travel pants
  • 1 pair of sturdy, closed-toe shoes like cross trainers, which are lightweight yet can handle rough terrain (if your trip includes serious trekking, consider clipping a pair of hiking boots to the outside of your pack)
  • 1 pair of water-friendly shoes (stick to shoes like Tevas , Keens , or Chacos , which offer much more stability than flip flops)
  • Baseball hat or visor for sun protection
  • Optional: 1 pair of jeans or other casual bottoms (to wear when not actively adventuring)
  • Optional: 1 pair of multi-use shoes for walking and casual everyday use (consider a supportive slip-on style that’s easy to don after a long day on your feet)

Depending on the weather at your destination, make two workout capsule wardrobes: one for cold weather and one for warm weather. Store one at your home base and swap it out when needed.

The Best Clothing for Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Remember that a good capsule wardrobe is made up of a small number of durable, classic pieces. No cheap throwaways. No fast fashion. 

This wardrobe is an investment. If something costs more than you would usually pay, that’s okay, as long as it lasts longer and never goes out of style. 

Travel Capsule Wardrobe T-Shirts

Merino wool is the ideal t-shirt fabric because it regulates your body temperature and repels odors. You can wear a merino shirt multiple times before needing to wash it.

Smartwool and Icebreaker are the most popular choices. We also like newer brands like Unbound Merino , Wool & Prince , and Outlier .

For non-wool t-shirts, check out brands like Everlane and Uniqlo .

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Jackets

Your choice of jacket completely depends on the weather in your destination and your travel style.

Rainy weather is easy. Most outdoor companies make thin, packable rain jackets . Multiple Tortuga recommend the Patagonia Torrentshell ( men’s , women’s ). L.L. Bean’s H2Off and Columbia’s Arcadia II are solid, affordable picks.

Temperate weather and city trips call for canvas, jean, or shirt jackets, which are easy to dress up or down. Just avoid anything too bulky. 

Leather jackets look great with just about anything but are heavy. If you’ll wear yours every day (and thus never have to fit it in your bag), a leather moto can make a strong addition to your wardrobe.

For cold (but not frigid) weather or more outdoorsy destinations, go for a packable puffer that you can layer over a fleece or under a weather-proof shell.

Down insulation offers the best warmth to weight ratio. My Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket ( men’s , women’s ) kept me warm in actual Patagonia and smooshed into the size of a baseball in my backpack. Uniqlo’s Ultra Light Down Jacket ( men’s , women’s ) is a comparable budget option.

Because down doesn’t work well when wet, consider synthetic fill for drizzly destinations. Synthetic fibers dry faster than down and are also generally cheaper. Either way, stick to dark colors, which keep puffers looking sleek.

For very cold weather, invest in a hip- or knee-length water- and wind-resistant parka. While heavy, you can always stick your parka in the overhead bin during flights and leave it in your room when necessary.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Pants, Shorts, and Skirts

Jeans are some of the toughest, most versatile travel pants around. Just remember to wear them in transit as they’re big, bulky, and hard to pack. Go with your favorite style but avoid pairs with rips and distressing, as this makes them difficult to dress up.

Chinos are classics too. Our favorite travel chinos are from Bluffworks , but every brand from Gap to J. Crew to Banana Republic makes its own version. Find a pair that fits you well and isn’t too bulky. 

Active brands like Athleta , Outdoor Voices , and Lululemon also offer a good selection of comfortable, travel-ready pants. Go for dark colors and no one will be able to tell that you’re wearing performance fabrics.

Athletic shorts are another versatile option on the road. They can be used at the gym, for outdoor adventures, as a substitute for pajamas, and as swim trunks.

Midi and maxi skirts are perfect for warm climates because they look fancy while also being comfortable, breezy, and modest.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Shoes

Unless all you’ll be doing is ordering piña coladas from a lounge chair, you’ll need more than a pair of flip-flops. 

All travelers should invest in reliable, walkable travel shoes . Depending on the activity level of your trip, these can be loafers, ankle boots, cushioned flats, or even a pair of Birkenstocks . 

Cole Haan is famous for its comfortable oxfords, with the packable ZERØGRAND line being particularly great for travel.

Sneakers are fine, but avoid pairs with loud colors or logos that will clash with the rest of your wardrobe. Brands like Thousandfell offer classic white tennis shoes in stain-resistant fabrics, while you can toss Allbirds’ Wool Runners ( men’s , women’s ) directly in the washing machine when your trip’s over. 

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Socks and Underwear

Choose any brand of underwear that looks good and feels comfortable but avoid cotton if you can. You need a fabric that will repel odors and dry quickly. We’re long-time fans of ExOfficio underwear. ExOfficio has a variety of styles for men or women that dry quickly, wick sweat, and repel odors. 

For socks, we recommend Smartwool and Darn Tough . Both brands make wool socks that stay up and fit snugly. You can find both men’s and women ’s socks in every style from thick, calf-high hiking socks to thin, low-rise athletic socks.

A capsule wardrobe ensures that you’ll look great, no matter where your travels take you. You’ll also save time and money in shopping for, packing, and maintaining clothing in the long run.

What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

I first came across the concept of a capsule wardrobe in 2015 when I was pregnant with my second child. I’m ever drawn towards minimalism, regardless of my high failure rate in that area.

The capsule wardrobe that I found was the Project 333 Version.

The basic premise is that you choose 33 pieces from your closet, pieces that you love and wear, that make you feel and look good, and you commit to wearing only those clothes for the next season. Then you put everything else away, and you mix and match your 33 pieces.

The original 33/3 method asks you to include clothes, shoes, accessories, and jewelry. I have found that 24 clothing items is a great number for a seasonal capsule, mixed with quality accessories to last longer.

I just finished re-reading Project 333 and I can’t recommend it enough. If you really want to dig into your motivations for dressing more simply and with less, this is the book for you!

Choosing a Color Palette for a Capsule Wardrobe

One crucial element of creating a capsule wardrobe that cannot be overlooked is cohesiveness. You’re going to wear these items of clothing for around 90 days. You want them to go well together, and avoid having items that stand out and don’t go with anything else.

Winter is the perfect time to choose high contrast colors like deep jewel tones mixed with icy versions of pastels.

For this fall capsule I’ve chosen black, navy, off-white, amazon green , and waterspout ( Pantone trending colors ).

Emerald green (Pantone’s Amazon) is so crazy trending that every item I looked at for this capsule sold out before publishing this post.

So run, girl, and get you some green this winter!

Waterspout is a warm, light turquoise or sky-blue color. It make a lovely contrast for winter and mimics the clear sky against dark winter trees and white snowy landscapes.

Feel free to use whatever colors you like for your fall capsule wardrobe.

Any wardrobe should be based primarily on neutral colors, so you can use them year round and get the most bang for your buck.

But adding a few trending pops of color (this wardrobe has less than 10% color) is a great way to update your wardrobe, while avoiding style trends that come and go.

The Elements of a Winter Capsule Wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is really personal to each person’s individual style and aesthetic. I’ve built a 24 piece capsule based upon a quote by Coco Chanel that all you really need is a couple good suits.

Granted we are much less formal these days and only high-powered executives wear suits regularly.

But the basis of a suit is 3 pieces: a top, bottom, dress, and “jacket”. So with those building blocks we expand to the following 28 items for a basic seasonal capsule wardrobe:

Even in winter, this country is a fantastic place to visit, and while most cities will be cold and wet, that doesn’t mean you can’t immerse yourself in true Italian culture.

Temperatures will change depending on where you decide to visit. In Milan , you should expect plenty of frost, but as you head further south, you’re likely to experience rain in Rome , and even sunshine in cities like Palermo and Sicily.

Think jeans, a white T-shirt, a blazer, a versatile dress, and a cashmere sweater; these are items that will serve you for years and can streamline the daily process of getting dressed. And while you're traveling, it’s important to add efficiencies wherever possible so you spend less time worrying about your clothes and more time enjoying the destination.

The key is to invest in high-quality pieces that will last you for years to come. Think tote bags, blazers, and other fundamentals – invest slightly more now and reap the dividends over the years, all while minimizing valuable time spent wondering what to wear. 

Having a capsule wardrobe doesn’t necessarily mean wearing the same basic uniform on repeat – pieces you love can be styled creatively with different shoes, accessories, and colors tailored to suit different occasions. You can remix the same LBD (little black dress) from day to night simply by adding heels and an evening clutch. Once you have the foundations in place, defining your style becomes a simple process.

Plus, buying one hero piece per category is a sustainable, space-saving option (and we certainly need that when we’re traveling with limited suitcase space!). 

Prioritize versatility

The whole concept of a capsule wardrobe is based on versatile, well-made staples, and that generally means neutral colorways and classic silhouettes. You can never go wrong with black, white, or neutral shades that can adapt to suit any ensemble and simple shapes that transcend trendiness. Nicole Wiesmann, Vice President of Design for Banana Republic, advises to “always keep it versatile with a few statement pieces.” Another excellent tip? Planning ahead. “I try on all my outfits before I pack to ensure I am bringing complete outfits, and I encourage my husband to do the same,” she says.

Choose the right fabrics

When building a capsule wardrobe for travel, look for fabrics that are wrinkle-resistant so you don’t need to worry about ironing or steaming your garments on arrival. Lyocell and Tencel are some of the best options. Also, cashmere and denim are great to pack since they rarely crease. It also depends on the climate. “When traveling, I check the weather five days before I leave and continue to check until the day I depart for the trip,” explains Wiesmann. “Weather may force you to change choices,” she adds. “If I see a summer week is turning to rain, I grab a trench for my carry on. For warmer or humid weather, I’ll grab linen pieces. I always pack a seasonless wardrobe with seasonal pieces layered in.”

Seasonality is, of course, a vital factor when packing a capsule wardrobe for travel, but the below clothing categories are relevant for various destinations.

There are different variations, but generally this rule refers to packing five tops, four bottoms, three dresses, three pairs of shoes (that includes dress shoes , if you'll need them), two bags, and one of each of a few destination-specific items (e.g. a swimsuit for somewhere warm or a scarf for somewhere cooler). The idea is that you’re not aimlessly loading your closet into a suitcase — you’re packing versatile pieces that pair well together that can be worn for different situations throughout your trip.

It all depends on the individual garment – check the specific instructions written on the label, and if there are none, look up what the care recommendations are for particular fabrics online. Many will be dry clean only, some hand wash cold, and some can easily be tossed in the washer and dryer (like cotton or denim). 

With so much luggage getting lost at airports lately, I personally always take enough to survive on in a carry-on (and I'm particularly partial to Tumi’s 4-wheeled carry-on). But for checked luggage, it's best to keep shoes separate from clothing, and put a plastic bag or garment bag around anything you don’t want to get damaged (in case your toiletry bag leaks or you encounter any other spill-related situations). The queen of organization, Marie Kondo, has an excellent method of maximizing space with her famous KonMari fold (a rolling technique that also minimizes creasing) and advises using packing cubes.

How to build a capsule wardrobe for carry-on only travel

Kate Hooker travels full time out of a carry-on backpack.

Packing light avoids long checked baggage queues at the airport, or dragging a huge bag around a foreign city.

It also means the 26-year-old — who's currently a yacht host in Croatia, but is originally from Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland, NZ) – avoids the potential stress of an airline losing her luggage.

Kate keeps things simple by only bringing a limited capsule wardrobe with her when she travels. Here's how.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

Although Kate's backpacking and predominantly staying in hostels, capsule wardrobes are also great for bougier holidays and work trips.

They're best described as a set of clothes that can be worn for multiple activity types, where most of your tops can match most of your bottoms.

Kate likes to build her wardrobe around a set of possible activities she'll be doing on her trip, whether that's "going out to dinner, going to the beach, wandering around the markets or chilling at the hotel".

After she's written out a list, she then chooses pieces that can work for more than one of those categories.

Kristine Fernandez — a 38-year-old style coach from Meanjin (Brisbane), who's previously worked as an Emirates flight attendant — prefers to focus on her pieces first.

She'll choose something like a white tank top and think about what she can pair it with to dress it up or down.

However you choose to approach it, both avid travellers have some capsule wardrobe dos and don'ts you might want to stick with.

Don't: Feel like everything needs to be black or white

Colours like black, white and beige are going to be versatile options for any capsule wardrobe.

But if you do like a bit more colour in your life, you can still make capsule wardrobes work for you.

Kate suggests creating a colour palette, which could be "simple or extravagant".

"It's just about picking colours that you like and that complement each other."

Or, Kate says you could pack predominantly fun, patterned bottoms, and basic tops in neutral colours to match them. You could also reverse it and bring loud tops, and plain bottoms.

"That's a really easy way to jazz up your capsule wardrobe … like I have a red skirt with little white flowers that I can pair with white or black tops," she says.

Kristine enjoys adding colour to her wardrobe by packing one bright matching set.

"You can take that top and pair it with all the [neutral] bottoms that you have, or you can take the bottoms and wear it with all your tops" or, for maximum colour, you can wear it as a full set.

Don't: Bring the heaviest fabrics you own

Bringing heavy, bulky materials like corduroy or denim is going to take up a heap of space in your bag.

Instead, think about lightweight fabrics that can fold up small.

Kate says synthetic fabrics can be easy to pack, although they might cause you to sweat more.

Kristine's favourite piece is a "black matte silk slip dress" that packs down small in her bag.

"I can wear it with slides for the daytime and with heels if I want to dress it up, [or it even works] as a beach cover up, because it's not a shiny silk, it's more of a matte material."

Do: Choose versatile clothing

While materials are important, there's always exceptions to the rule — if your jeans go with everything and are a staple in your wardrobe, they're still worth bringing.

Or for Kate, a denim jacket is a must-have.

"A lot of people say, oh, that's far too heavy, but I never pack it — I always wear it on my travel days."

She also finds long-sleeved linen shirts handy, as they can be a classy evening top, or protect you from the sun as a beach cover-up.

Kristine is a big fan of linen pants, as they can be dressed both up and down.

If you're planning to be more adventurous and do activities like hiking, she'd also recommend going for linen shorts over bike shorts, so you can wear them to evening dinners, too.

When it comes to tops, she likes to bring a mixture of tank tops, T-shirts and then "something more structured" like a button-up with a collar.

Do: Consider your shoes and jewellery

While shoes like heels can be an easy way to dress up an outfit, these are going to a bulky part of your carry-on, and may only fit into one activity type.

Depending on your trip type and personal style, you may just want to bring one set of white sneakers — the trendy kind that can also be worn out at night — and one set of slides or sandals.

Jewellery is a simple solution to dressing up outfits, without taking up too much space in your bag.

Kristine suggests packing both a small to mid-sized hoop earring and a stud.

She adds that "a thin chain necklace that drapes about one or two inches from the collarbone, perhaps something simple with a pendant, will make a world of difference to any outfit".

She's also a big fan of chunky statement jewellery, given her clothes are so simple: "Without jewellery, a lot of my outfits look like pyjamas."

Do: Consider capsule wardrobes for winter trips

If you're travelling somewhere cold, you'll want to wear any big coats or heavy shoes on the plane.

Kate says options like a lightweight fleece jacket won't take up too much space, and "will keep you warm when you need it".

Kristine suggests focusing on layering easy-pack options like thermals.

Whatever trip you're planning, remember that you can always wash your clothes, or hit up a local op shop at your destination.

Packing a Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Just getting dressed warmly in winter can feel like a chore, much less packing up all the layers ahead of your vacation. Most of the time, I travel with carry on luggage only – even in winter. For longer winter trips (over 10 days), I’ll add a suitcase for a fun coat or a really good pair of winter boots – it’s not worth being cold or feeling bland on my trip just so I can say I didn’t check a bag!

Regardless, no one likes to lug heavy suitcases around when they’re trying to enjoy a new destination, so I always pack a Travel Capsule Wardrobe . If you’ve been around for a while, you know the drill: put together a well-edited, remixable collection of clothes to pack ahead of time. Then, on your trip, your luggage load is lighter and you can get dressed on autopilot and still feel stylish (and warm). A mix of fun and basic ( a turtleneck, but make it stripey ), cozy ( a big soft sweater ) and polished ( this cheerful floral blouse ).

Notably less fun, but they’ll go with everything: modern black denim sans hem , a warm knit skirt , and classic winter white pants .

How to wear a pretty printed dress in winter? Add fleece-lined tights and tallllll boots . If it’s really cold, upgrade to a base layer or pants with stretch . More cold weather outfit hacks right this way .

Three pairs of shoes can see me through almost any length of trip: low white boots for lots of walking, patent platform brogues for lighter days, and tall black boots (they roll up nicely for packing!) for an extra layer against the cold.

When your coat is all that most people can see during the day, it’s nice to have a fun one. I’ll stick with one solid wool coat , but for longer trips add a printed coat , too!

ACCESSORIES

To keep warm: a black pom beanie , cozy alpaca scarf , and non-boring mittens . To carry things: a cheery crossbody bag (for exploring) and a more-than-basic tote (for travel and market trips). Don’t forget fleece lined tights – they’re a winter miracle.

Spring's weather can be unpredictable, which is why a trench coat is key for layering. "A transitional trench coat is a versatile staple for any spring capsule wardrobe because it offers a touch of sophistication that effortlessly transitions between casual and elevated looks," says stylist and wardrobe consultant Allison Bornstein . Jacquemus's Le Trench Bari ($1485) is the ultimate splurge-worthy staple, crafted from water-repellent cotton canvas to keep you dry and stylish in April showers. Anine Bing's Randy Trench ($500) and Nichole Lynel's On Watch Plaid Detail Trench ($153) are other great, versatile options available for a more accessible price tag.

Pro Tip: "A trench coat also serves as the perfect outer layer for the 'three layer rule,' a styling method Stitch Fix coined for creating outfits with three distinct layers that will help you stay stylish while accounting for varying temperatures and weather forecasts for seasonal transitions like spring," Bornstein tells us.

Linen Dress

As spring approaches, we start reaching for lightweight materials like linen and cotton and steer away from heavier fabrics. "At Everlane, we design our pieces to be a part of your 'forever wardrobe,' and I really try to buy items for my own wardrobe thoughtfully and rework or restyle them as the seasons change and what’s in fashion evolves," says Everlane's chief creative officer, Mathilde Mader . "At the moment, I love layering: draping a sweater over the top of your blazer —or something more daring, like wearing a shirt over or under a linen shirtdress to create a double collar—can completely transform an item that might have been languishing at the back of your closet." We're loving Gap's Linen-Blend Midi Shirtdress ($90) for layering. If you're looking for more of a statement piece, opt for something with floral detailing, like Reformation's Amorette Linen Dress ($178).

Tailored Top

A tailored top or button-down shirt is one of the most versatile pieces you can have in your wardrobe. "You can wear it open with a tank or tee in the spring and summer to get a little structure and tailoring while still feeling breezy," Bornstein says. When curating a spring capsule wardrobe, consider investing in a few items you'll have for years to come. Sunglasses are a chic accessory that can instantly elevate a look without breaking the bank. "A white t-shirt is a great styling tool," Bornstein says. "Style your white tee underneath a leather blazer and finish the look with your favorite pair of jeans, giving you the perfect blend of casual and elevated." "If you are truly ready to part ways with the piece, consider having a clothing swap with a friend or donating it to give it a new life," Mader says. While you're spring cleaning, consider trying a new style—Mader tells us that "barrel leg jeans are having a real moment and might seem scary at first, but are actually so fun and easy to style." The oversized fit is fun and easy to style, but if you aren't ready yet, opt for a classic option like Tove Studio's Sade Jean ($436).
