Tuesday, October 12: Arrive Chengdu

Arrive into Chengdu, Sichuan province’s modern capital, lying at the western edge of the fertile Red Basin plains. Transfer to the Kempinski Chengdu Hotel  for a welcome dinner and briefing by your expedition leaders. Overnight at Kempinski Chengdu Hotel .

Wednesday, October 13: Chengdu / Labahe National Park

No mammal better epitomizes China’s fabulous wildlife than the Giant Panda. This morning, visit the famous Chengdu Panda Base, to learn more about this iconic species’ ecology, and the ongoing scientific and conservation-focused research aimed at protecting it. This most beloved of bears is critically endangered, its global population estimated at fewer than 2,000 individuals, with almost a third inhabiting Sichuan’s network of Panda reserves.

Continue westwards from Chengdu across the densely populated countryside of the Red Basin. Travel through a mosaic of intensively cultivated fields and traditional villages that lie in stark contrast to the newly constructed expressways and bustling towns, complete with skyscrapers, that bear testimony to the economic boom of modern China.

Leaving the plains behind, wind ever upwards into scenic Labahe National Park, situated in the rugged mountain wilderness of the Hengduan range that forms the eastern ramparts of the Tibetan Plateau. Roadside bamboo groves hold perky Collared Finchbills, melodious Chinese Hwamei, Elliot’s Laughingthrush and active flocks of Vinous-throated Parrotbills. You may also encounter your first mammals in the form of bands of swarthy Tibetan Macaques foraging for berries. Overlooking a rushing river, deep within Labahe, the Blue Crystal Hotel  provides your base for two full days of exploration.

Thursday & Friday, October 14 & 15: Labahe National Park

A region of high ridges and steep valleys cloaked in semi-deciduous and coniferous forests, Labahe National Park has gained notoriety recently as the very best place on Earth to see the exquisite, elusive Red Panda. Like their larger namesakes, Red Pandas favor areas of dense bamboo thickets in which to rest and feed, supplementing their bamboo diet with birds’ eggs and fruits. In Labahe in the fall, by carefully scanning the mountain slopes, you may be fortunate enough to locate these fabulous chestnut “fire-foxes” feeding on seasonal berries in the treetops.

Although finding and spending time observing Red Pandas is undoubtedly our principal aim, Labahe also supports a broad array of other wildlife in its cool, mountain forest valleys. The goat-like Long-tailed Goral favors the rocky slopes, handsome Red and hulking Sambar Deer graze the hillsides, while diminutive Swinhoe’s Striped, Père David’s Rock and frenetic Perny’s Long-nosed Squirrels scurry through the woodland. After dark, spotlighting excursions may reveal the presence of some of the harder to spot nocturnal denizens, such as the striking Masked Palm Civet, Hog Badger, Reeve’s Muntjac (or Barking Deer) and the impressive Red-and-White Giant Flying Squirrel.

Hiking the network of trails and roads through the reserve also offers a chance to experience some of Sichuan’s avian wonders, amongst them some of the most gorgeous birds on Earth. Foremost amongst these are the fabulous pheasants, with a first chance of such gems as the ethereal Satyr Tragopan and endemic Lady Amherst’s Pheasant, although four species of bamboo-loving parrotbills, a plethora of woodpeckers and laughingthrushes, the jewel-like Golden-breasted Fulvetta, and perhaps even the highly localized Streaked Barwing, will likely also keep you entertained.

Saturday, October 16: Labahe / Wenchuan County

After a final morning exploring Labahe, depart northwards through the fantastic landscapes of Sichuan’s high mountains, or shans . Traversing steeply incised gorges and cloud-wreathed hillsides of dense coniferous and mixed deciduous forests, cross high mountain passes with seemingly endless panoramic vistas of snow-capped peaks.

At the roadside, active White-throated Dippers and White-capped Redstart flit along the streams, while Himalayan Griffons and Alpine Choughs often soar around the scenic lookout points. In the late afternoon, reach Wenchuan County for an overnight stay at the New Wenchuan Hotel .

Sunday, October 17: Wenchuan County / Ruoergai

Rise early to continue the journey westwards from Wenchuan County, crossing a final series of spruce-clad passes before reaching the high Tibetan Plateau. An austere, but starkly picturesque, wilderness of alpine grasslands, meandering rivers and shimmering lakes, the Tibetan Plateau is still inhabited by traditional nomadic herders who move their yaks, sheep and ponies with the seasons, their lifestyle unchanged in centuries.

Arrive into the orderly town of Ruoergai, to prepare for an in-depth exploration of the unique Tibetan wildlife and culture of the surrounding areas. Dinner and overnight at the Tanggute hotel.

Monday & Tuesday, October 18 & 19: Ruoergai

Ruoergai has achieved a reputation in recent years as an excellent base from which to search for Tibetan wildlife, a product of its location at the edge of the 12,000-foot-high Tibetan Plateau, in close proximity to a rich variety of productive wildlife-watching sites.

Kick off your endeavors with a sunrise vigil at the Baixi Forest, overlooking a valley of ancient spruce. This is the time when mammals are most active, and as the mist lifts over the primordial scene, Eurasian Roe, Sika, or even Tufted Deer may be glimpsed picking their way stealthily through the hillside scrub. Common Pheasants, here in their ancestral home, and regal Blue Eared Pheasants stalk the surrounding meadows, with the rollicking songs of skulking Père David’s and Giant Laughingthrushes heralding the dawn.

Hiking through the taller old-growth forest offers such avian specialties as Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker, the dainty, lilac-tinted Crested Tit-Warbler, Collared Grosbeak, or perhaps even two scarce and localized denizens for which Baixi is renowned: the endemic Chinese Grouse and highly localized Snowy-cheeked (or Sukatschev’s) Laughingthrush.

Despite the many attractions of the coniferous forest, it is undoubtedly the grasslands of the plateau itself that hold the greatest rewards for the mammal enthusiast. Although never plentiful, the fauna of these high uplands has long held the allure of the exotic. Most conspicuous are the scurrying Plateau, or Black-lipped, Pikas, which form the base of the food chain in these parts. Endlessly fascinating, the colonies of these diminutive, hare-like animals attract a plethora of desirable carnivores, from maned Tibetan Foxes and frenetic Mountain Weasels, to rare Asian Badgers and Steppe Polecats, with Upland Buzzards and Saker Falcons circling above. At this season, packs of handsome Tibetan Wolves are also a distinct possibility, patrolling the terrain for easy meals.

Of all the pika predators, however, one holds the most intoxicating appeal: Pallas’s Cat, or Manul ! Barely the size of a house cat, these peculiar, low-slung, stealth hunters are amongst the most sought-after of all the world’s felids, and the Rouergai area is currently the very best place to encounter this wonderful creature, seen by fewer Westerners than have Snow Leopards!

A visit to the scenic Wild Flower Lake area to the north of town is equally compelling and productive. White-rumped and smart Red-necked Snowfinches forage amongst the pika colonies, Kessler’s Thrushes and amazing, aberrant Ground Tits bound across the grassland. You may also find the most iconic of Tibetan Plateau nesting birds, the stately, rare, and endangered Black-necked Crane. Overnights at Tanggute Hotel in Ruoergai.

Wednesday, October 20: Ruoergai / Jiuzhaigou

It will be hard to tear yourself away from this lonely, compelling plateau, yet Sichuan’s low altitude forests beckon, and you descend southwards through dry, scrub-covered valleys toward Jiuzhaigou. This is nearly the halfway point on the journey to Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve. Dinner and overnight at the Hilton Jiuzgaigou Resort .

Thursday, October 21: Jiuzhaigou / Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve

Continue the drive to the legendary Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve. This is truly scenic countryside, a wilderness of temperate forests and jagged, snow-covered peaks where the pioneering research on Giant Pandas was carried out decades ago by the world-renowned biologist, George Schaller. Toward evening, enter the steep, limestone gorges of Tangjiahe, to spend three nights in the extraordinary Tangjiahe Hotel, deep in the heart of the national park.

Friday & Saturday, October 22 & 23: Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve

Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve is a magnificent region of subtropical forests dominated by extensive thickets of bamboo, known for its plentiful wildlife. Set out on foot this morning, watching for signs of Wild Boar roaming the valley floor, perhaps alongside bands of Tibetan Macaques, with Tufted Deer picking their way through the undergrowth higher up the slopes. With a healthy dose of luck, and careful scanning, bands of that most quintessential of Chinese primates, the Golden Snub-nosed Monkey, may also be found, crashing through the treetops. Perhaps Tangjiahe’s most famous denizen, however, is the amazing Golden Takin, a bizarre goat-antelope frequently found grazing in open forest clearings during the day, or on the lawn of our hotel at night!

Nocturnal excursions form a large part of the focus here, offering a unique opportunity to come face to face with some of Asia’s most rarely seen mammals: Chinese Serow, striking Masked Palm Civet, the cantankerous Malayan Porcupine, exquisite Leopard Cat, or even Chinese Ferret-Badger. While encountering these rarities is far from guaranteed, careful and persistent spot-lighting over successive evenings often yields rewards!

At this season, the semi-deciduous forests are painted in breathtaking fall colors, a perfect landscape in which to search for additional avian riches of Sichuan. Foremost is Golden Pheasant, a mind-numbingly beautiful bird that is nowhere more readily encountered than here. Garrulous Three-toed and Spectacled Parrotbills flit through the bamboo undergrowth, along with the bulky Spotted Laughingthrush, the sneaky Black-streaked Scimitar Babbler, and gorgeous Golden-breasted Fulvetta, while riverside trees play host to Crested Kingfisher and, with great luck, the impressive Tawny Fish-Owl. Overnights in Tangjiahe Hotel.

Sunday, October 24: Tangjiahe / Chengdu

After a final morning in Sichuan’s magical valleys, follow a series of impressive modern roads southwards to Chengdu for dinner and an overnight at the Kempinski Hotel Chengdu,  conveniently located for your international departures tomorrow.

Monday, October 25: Depart Chengdu

Transfer to the airport this morning for your international flights home.

China Travel Tips

  • Don’t go looking for the ‘Chinese’ food you’re accustomed to eating at home. Proper Chinese cuisine is mostly simple meat and cooked vegetables, and is very different from what you’ll find in Westernised Chinese restaurants.
  • The only currency you can use during your China trip is the yuan (or RMB). Businesses will not accept Hong Kong dollars or US dollars. If you can’t exchange currencies before you travel, many large banks allow you to exchange money using their ATMs at a reasonable exchange rate.
  • Receive a compliment? Don’t say thank you - it’s a sign of vanity. Refuse them - it’s polite.
  • Many websites are blocked in China, including Google (Gmail) and Facebook. If you desperately need these tools to contact friends and family back home, seek advice from the locals. WeChat is one of the most popular messaging app that you can download and use while on your China tour.
  • Purchasing a Chinese sim card for your mobile phone is simple and cheap. Carriers even offer a service where you can call to request directions and they text you the address in Mandarin for easy communication with taxi drivers.

The Li River in Guilin is like an artist's masterpiece, bounded by classic sheer karst hills, which have inspired many poets and ink painters. It is listed as one of the world's " Top 10 Watery Wonders " by America's National Geographic Magazine and the World's "15 Best Rivers for Travelers" by CNN Travel .

Taking a leisurely cruise or a 3–4-hour family-friendly moderate hike (more on Li River hiking ) are good ways to enjoy the Li River's beauty. We can take you to less-crowded stretches for you to immerse yourself in this paradise of nature.

When looking for natural beauty, Yangshuo comes first in Chinese minds for its karst hills and rivers. Get away from the touristy parts of Yangshuo and enjoy the idyllic, painting-like scenes in peace.

Challenge yourself to a SUP (stand-up paddleboard, i.e. a mini raft) on the Yulong River, take a bamboo raft, have a cycling tour into the countryside, or take an exciting drive with an all-terrain vehicle.

An image of a twisting pine tree growing from a curiously curved rock pops into Chinese minds when they hear of the Yellow Mountains .

These mystical and mystical mountains are the most beautiful and most famous in China. Their classic attractions are grand dawns and their "four natural wonders": peculiar pines, oddly-shaped rocks, seas of clouds, and hot springs.

This fairyland scene with the sunset and the sea of clouds is also perfect for a marriage proposal or to mark an important occasion. See our 5 Days Dynamic Huangshan Tour .

The nearby villages, for example, Bishan Village is where you could quiet down and enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the countryside.

You could walk or bike among ancient villages, stay in a typical Hui-style inn, and see how artists turn this small area into a rural paradise on canvas. Canola flowers in spring can be the icing on the cake.

3. Zhangjiajie — Precipitous Pillars

The precipitous pillars in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park are the inspiration for the Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar.

Zhangjiajie is famous for its towering peaks, breathtaking rock pillars, and deep valleys. The forest of massive pillars is one of the best muses for photographers in China.

Take a 4-day tour of the main highlights in Zhangjiajie : Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon with its Glass Bridge, and Tianmen Mountain.

Want a non-touristy route? 5-Day Zhangjiajie Hiking and Biking Tour for Any Level is a good choice.

The most important highlight is the golden sunrise on these spectacular snow-capped peaks.

The best season to visit the Snow Mountains is autumn when the sky is clear and blue.

Besides the snow-capped mountains, you can also see plateau lakes, thick forests, exotic flowers and trees, and various wild animals in the mountains. There are many Tibetan monasteries and villages at the foot of the mountains, bringing you a real Tibetan cultural experience.

Pudacuo National Park, about 22 km (14 mi) from Shangri-La, is also stunning in the fall. The blue sky, red meadows, clear lakes, and colorful forests make a beautiful picture.

7. Zhangye's Danxia Landscape — Rainbow Mountains

The Danxia landscape in Zhangye is vividly named "Rainbow Mountains" by many due to its dazzling colors. Danxia (丹霞 /dan-sshya/) means "red, red clouds". In China's remote northwest, Zhangye is deeply loved by photographers and en route for those on a Chinese Silk Road scenery and culture journey.

The landscape is composed of curvy, layered, multi-hued formations, most of which are several hundred meters high. When the sun shines on them, their colors appear in full vibrancy. It looks like an oil painting when the vast red rock formations are simply set against a pure blue sky.

You can tour it by starting from Chengdu and passing through Xinduqiao, a picturesque Tibetan town famous for its plateau pasture views, before arriving at Daocheng Yading Nature Reserve. You will see stunning fall scenery throughout the whole trip.

The Tibetan cultural experience is another highlight of this route. You can see many ancient monasteries and Tibetan-style houses during the trip.

Nestled in the deep forests and mountains of Altay, Kanas is a truly beautiful mountain lake. Since its access roads have been improved for travelers, it has attained a reputation as "the tourism pearl of Mountainous Altai".

The lake takes on different colors following the four seasons: sometimes it's crystal blue, sometimes it's dark green or even gray, and you may find it containing many colors setting off each other, thus it got a name as "the color-changing lake".

Nearby Kanas Lake, you can visit a village of the Tuwan tribe, which is a branch of the Mongolian ethnic group . Believers of Lamaism, live in their traditional houses and practice their centuries-old traditions. If you are interested in local culture, you can visit the village or even stay with hospitable families.

10. Ejina Desert Polar Forest in Inner Mongolia

A Euphrates poplar golden leaves shoot in autumn is a dream trip for many photography lovers. If you're one of them, the Populus euphratica forest in Ejina , Inner Mongolia is the right place for you.

Ejina Euphrates Poplar Forest is one of the best remaining ancient desert poplar forest areas and features dazzling golden leaves, dreamy water reflections, running sheep, and boundless deserts with longed-for camel riding opportunities. It is a good place for both sunrise and sunset shoots.

With its advantageous position adjacent to Gansu Province, Ejina Euphrates Poplar Forest is usually combined with a trip along the legendary Silk Road . Traveling from Dunhuang to Zhangye via Jiayuguan and Ejina, with the mysterious Mogao Caves, desert landscapes, colorful landforms, and stunning golden leaves, you will have a rich touring experience.

11. Hangzhou — Next Best Place to Heaven

Renowned for its scenic beauty, Hangzhou is one of the most photogenic cities in China. In the 13th century, Marco Polo described Hangzhou as "the city of heaven" and "the finest and most splendid city in the world".

Hangzhou's most famous sight, West Lake , is considered one of the most beautiful sights in China. Each season offers picturesque scenes that will leave an ever-lasting impression.

The best time to go is spring (March to May). The lake, ancient buildings, and causeways decorated with flower blossoms are the theme of many elegant Chinese paintings.

Hangzhou is also a good place to learn about Chinese tea culture. You could visit a tea plantation to see how farmers pick tea leaves, learn the process of making tea, and taste a cup of China's most-adored tea. See our 5-Day Shanghai & Hangzhou with Watertown Tour

Also, read How to Plan a Hangzhou Tour .

12. The Yuanyang Terraced Fields — Steps to Heaven

"If you are a traveler, but have never been to Yuanyang , Yuanyang will feel sad for you; If you are a photographer but have never been to Yuanyang, God will feel sorry for you!"

There are many things that you know will never be surpassed once you see their beauty. And you will find Yuanyang's terraced fields are the most beautiful terraces in the world, once you have been there.

  • Recommended itinerary: 6-Day Jianshui and Yuanyang Tour

13. Jiuzhaigou — Colorful Alpine Lakes

Jiuzhaigou , in remote western China, has inspired dreams of a colorful fairyland among many travelers. Jiuzhaigou features multicolored lakes surrounded by vast mountain forests. These lakes change color throughout the day and year. The colors come from the reflections of surrounding mountainsides and algae and minerals in the lakes.

Fall is the most beautiful season in Jiuzhaigou, when the landscape changes color, providing a vivid backdrop of autumnal hues — an unspoiled, dazzling beauty rarely rivaled in China.

  • 3-Day Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong Highlights Tour
  • 6-Day Essential Chengdu and In-Depth Jiuzhaigou Tour
  • 7-Day Chengdu, Mount Emei, and Jiuzhaigou Scenic Tour

14. Sanya — Warm Winter Escape

Located at the southern tip of China's Hainan Island, this tropical paradise is known as the "the Hawaii of China".

Sanya has the best beaches in China, and you will find plenty of resort choices at Yalong Bay, Dadonghai, and Sanya Bay. Wuzhizhou Island and West Island are paradises for diving enthusiasts.

What about walking on a suspension bridge or flying over the rainforest on a zipline? The tropical rainforests bring you choices of exciting and adventurous activities. Nanwan Monkey Island is especially popular among families with children.

Looking for a warm winter vacation? Our 5-Day Sanya Tour with the Best Beach ensures you uncompromised fun with the ocean, the beach, and the sun.

15. Xishuangbanna — Tropical and Exotic Charms

Remember the "Long March" of 15 Asian elephants in 2021?

Right, they came from Xishuangbanna — a pleasant place with an annual average temperature of about 20°C (68°F). It is a paradise of tropical plants, a kingdom of wild animals, and home to the Theravada Buddhist temples of China.

Nature lovers would be spoiled with a visit to the Tropical Botanical Garden in Xishuangbanna, which has the richest collection of species and the most plant-specific attractions anywhere in China.

Stilt-style Dai houses are dotted throughout every corner of the region. Take ethnic-culture-rich pictures and find yourself in a truly Southeast Asian atmosphere.

Last, but not least, local tourists rush to Xishuangbanna in winter to escape the cold further north. More flights are available, but you will find airfares are comparatively high during winter times.

What about a short hike in the tropical forest or a stay in a treehouse, relaxing in the oxygen-rich air? Or a chance to interact with the native Asian elephants and peacocks? Our 6-Day Xishuangbanna and Pu'er Tour gets you in touch with the rainforest.

Which One(s) to Visit?

These top 15 most beautiful places in China are excellent destinations that everyone would visit if they could. But, for the best experience, it is important that you choose the places to visit that best meets your travel needs at the right time for you.

Visit at the Right Time

These 15 places are suitable to travel all year round, but the best times are definitely April to May and September to early November when the weather is the most pleasant on average. There are some exceptions:

Winter Vacation:

  • Sanya: Want somewhere sunny and warm for winter? This is a great place for a winter escape.
  • The Yuanyang Terraced Fields: For great photos, try to visit between January and March when the terraces are irrigated with water.
  • The Yellow Mountains: The snow-capped Yellow Mountains in winter are quite different from their legendary popularity in other seasons — more like a peaceful haven.

Summer Vacations:

  • Tibet: It's the rainy season in Tibet during summertime, but there isn't much rain and temperatures are the most comfortable of the year. The annual Shoton Festival is around that time.
  • If you want to avoid heat and enjoy a cool summer holiday, Jiuzhaigou, Lijiang, and western Sichuan are good options.

Busy Golden Weeks:

  • Ejina Desert Polar Forest: To enjoy the very best of the golden poplar leaves, visit in early October during the National Day holiday in China (if you do not mind crowds).

No matter what season you are visiting China, our consultants will arrange a suitable itinerary for you to enjoy the beauty of China. All our tours can be customized based on your interests and requirements. Just contact us .

We Show You the Natural China Most People Never See!

  • See Giant Pandas Up Close on Visits to Three Different Sites Compare China itineraries—we don't think you'll find another that offers the panda immersion ours does, with unhurried visits to three different panda research bases: Dujiangyan Panda Base, which focuses on rescuing injured and ill wild pandas and disease control; the newly rebuilt Gengda Wolong Panda Center, which integrates scientific research, captive breeding and reintroduction of pandas into the wild; and Dujiangyan Panda Valley, a new facility that is both a panda research and breeding base and a center for conservation education.
  • A Rare Opportunity to Volunteer with Panda Care At Dujiangyan Panda Base, you'll have an optional opportunity to help with aspects of the pandas' care. This could involve preparing their food, cleaning enclosures, and other tasks that place us directly into the daily activities of the pandas' caregivers at this research base. Please note we cannot guarantee that this volunteer opportunity will always be available.
  • Exclusive Access to Search for Pandas & Other Rare Wildlife   This is a genuine Nat Hab privilege: We have secured special permits to visit remote sectors of a totally untouristed nature reserve deep within the Minshan Mountains, a global biodiversity hotspot that's home to some of the world’s most endangered wildlife. We'll search for giant pandas and moon bears that inhabit the park, though we won't expect  to see them, as both are highly elusive. We have better chances to find other rare Chinese animals like takin, goral, serow and golden pheasant, within a completely natural habitat that few tourists have ever laid eyes on—and only a handful of Westerners (mostly other Nat Hab travelers). The terrain is steep and heavily forested, and animals are often sheltered, camouflaged or seen at a distance—but just being in their midst in such a quiet, wild place is a moving experience.
  • Get Close to Golden Snub-Nosed Monkeys Visit a golden monkey nature reserve where we're sure to have close-up encounters with a habituated family group of these entertaining primates. It's a rare opportunity to see and photograph this endangered species that is endemic to a very limited part of central and southwest China.
  • Our Small Groups Go Places Larger Groups Can't  Because we limit this trip to approximately 12 guests, we’re able to take you where larger bus tours cannot go, including a remote national park where we have exclusive permits to search for wild pandas (though they are exceptionally elusive and rarely seen).
  • Travel with Two Guides for Exceptional Expertise Our China trips benefit from the leadership of two guides: a native English-speaking Nat Hab Expedition Leader accompanied by a warm and hospitable Chinese naturalist guide who is highly trained in natural history and interpretation, not to mention being our cultural and linguistic "go-between." It's an optimal combination of interpretive guiding, cultural knowledge and personalized attention.
  • Experience Traditional Tibetan Culture   Our travels include an overland traverse along the edge of the vast Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, where small villages, prayer flags and chortens dot the landscape. Learn more about the deeply traditional Tibetan Buddhist culture, which offers a dramatic counterpoint to the urban setting of Chengdu.
  • Savor Outstanding Sichuan Cuisine While nature may be your primary interest, food lovers will be thrilled by the culinary delights this trip offers. Sichuan is famed for its piquant cuisine, and we get to sample a wide selection of restaurants and dishes, with items carefully chosen by our local guide to appeal to Western palates. Since food is typically served family-style at a large round table, multiple tastes and dietary preferences can be catered for at every meal (though be sure to make special needs known to us ahead of time). And you won't be eating only in hotels or touristy restaurants: we choose locations popular with local people, for a truly authentic Chinese dining experience that Western visitors will also enjoy.
  • Our Accommodations Offer the Best in Location and Comfort From a 5-star luxury hotel in Chengdu to a quiet mountain inn where other travelers are few, our comfortable lodgings place you in close proximity to famous Chinese landmarks and remote and wild natural settings. Each offers a regional experience of China with plenty of amenities.
  • Travel with Expert Expedition Leaders  Our Nat Hab Expedition Leaders are outstanding North American naturalist guides who are passionate about China and its wildlife. In addition, you’ll travel with a Chinese tour guide who is a nature expert, ensuring an optimal balance of scientific knowledge, authentic cultural insight and attentive personal service. Furthermore, our Expedition Leaders have the benefit of additional training and resources from WWF's renowned scientists and researchers. See Expedition Leader bios and traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
  • Our Quality-Value Guarantee Ensures Your Outstanding China Tour With Natural Habitat Adventures, you receive our exclusive guarantee that clearly states that we will meet the high expectations we set forth in our promotional materials. To our knowledge, this is the most ambitious guarantee made by any adventure travel company. Read our important promise.
  • Feel Good About Your Carbon-Neutral Journey We care deeply about our planet, as we know you do. When you travel with us, the carbon emissions from your trip are 100% offset—including your round-trip flights from home. The best of China: 14 places you won’t want to miss

Feb 21, 2024 • 5 min read

china nature trips

From vibrant cities to jaw-dropping natural wonders like Zhangjiajie, here are the places in China you won’t want to miss © siraphat / Shutterstock

In  China , antiquity and heritage meet 21st-century innovation and lighting-fast development.

This is a country packed with highlights – so many that it might be hard to craft a manageable itinerary. Start by immersing yourself in one of China's gigantic, sprawling cities – which contain plenty of frantic energy, but hidden pockets of serenity, too. Take a break from the crush by soaking up China's natural scenery – think jagged peaks and pine forests draped in a sea of mist that look like they've been lifted straight from one of the country's masterpiece scroll paintings. As one of the world's most ancient civilizations, China also offers wonderful opportunities to explore astounding relics from its millennia of history.

Don't know where to start? Whether you dream of gilded temples, boisterous urban environments, fabulous food or the wonders of the Great Wall, here are our picks of the best places to visit in China.

Imperial shopfronts in a traditional hutong district, Beijing, China

One of the world's greatest cities and China's absolute can't-miss destination, Beijing is home to many of China's big-ticket attractions: the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square , the Summer Palace and more. But its appeal goes well beyond blockbuster sights. Get lost among its labyrinth of traditional hutongs (alleyways), marvel at its cutting-edge modern architecture, feast on Peking duck and a million other dishes from across the country, check out the local indie music scene, admire Ming-dynasty ceramics, drop by a traditional teahouse or enjoy a boisterous evening sampling the local baijiu  (sorghum wine).

Buddha scultpures in the Mogao Caves, Dunhuang, China

2. Mogao Grottoes, Dunhuang

Along the ancient Silk Road, the atmospheric frontier town of Dunhuang is home to one of the world's most important collections of Buddhist art. Among more than 490 Buddhist caves in the area, the mural and statue-filled Mogao Grottoes represent perhaps the zenith of Buddhist artistry in China.

Tourists on a viewing platform at Tiger Leaping Gorge, Yunnan

3. Tiger Leaping Gorge, Yunnan

One of China's most famous treks, this 22km (14-mile)  hiking trail winds through a World Heritage-listed gorge in Yunnan that is one of Asia's most striking landscapes. Framed by spectacular snow-capped mountains and the scenic Jinshajiang River, the natural monument plunges to depths of 3900m (12,795ft), making it one of the deepest gorges in the world.

The head of the Le Shan Buddha

4. Le Shan, Sichuan

Standing at the confluence of two rivers, the monumental 1200-year old Buddha image  at Le Shan is carved directly into the rock face. World Heritage–listed, the extraordinary monument stands 71m (233ft) tall and 28m (92ft) wide, making it the largest ancient Buddha in the world. Whether you're spiritually included or not, coming face to face with this sculpture is quite a moving experience.

The nighttime skyline of Shanghai, China

5. Shanghai

Glitzy, elegant, historic and cosmopolitan: everything you've heard about Shanghai is true. Just take a stroll through the French Concession or along the Bund , and you'll see for yourself. From the grand display of 1920s architecture to the city's sophisticated restaurants and rooftop bars to the sci-fi neon-lit skyscrapers across the bay, Shanghai is the past and future China brought to vivid life.

A young man looks off the side of the Great Wall of China

6. The Great Wall

Snaking through China's majestic mountainous terrain, the spectacular  Great Wall is the nation's most iconic landmark. Built over two millennia, this awe-inspiring, 21,196km-long (13,170-mile-long) fortification is a true marvel of human accomplishment. In fact, it's not one wall but many, stretching from the east coast all the way to the far western desert. The most easily accessible stretches can be reached by car from Beijing.

A caretaker with baby pandas, Chengdu

With its charming teahouses, lively nightlife and fiery Sichuan food, Chengdu is one of China's most popular cities for travelers. But most folk visit here for one reason: pandas. And while you'd be very lucky to spot one in the wild, sightings are guaranteed at the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base . Other draws of this inland regional capital include temples, pavilions and museums devoted to the culture of the ancient Shu kingdom.

Pastoral landscape on Yulong river, Yangshuo, China

8. Karst peaks, Guilin

Spanning the distance from Guilin to Yangshou , the picture-perfect karst-limestone peaks offer an extraordinary backdrop to the scenic Li River and rice paddies. Grab a bicycle or board a raft to tour this beautiful countryside, passing farmers and water buffalo along the way.

A spread of dim sum, Guangzhou, China

9. Guangzhou

This vibrant and dynamic  megacity is one of China's most fascinating hubs. You'll find an intriguing mix of old and new in a city where skyscrapers nudge the clouds, and monks shuffle around 1500-year-old Buddhist temples. But it's the Cantonese cuisine that lures in many, with some of the finest dim sum in all of China.

A woman in traditional dress walks through the terraced rice paddies of Longji, China

10. Longji Rice Terraces, Guangxi

You'll find rice paddies all over China – but few are as spectacular as the ones in Longji , built against a backdrop of lush mountains. Walks here lead to viewpoints overlooking sculpted, iridescent green terraces with swirling patterns resembling the contours of a giant thumbprint.

The Terracotta Warriors of Xi’an, China

11. Terracotta Warriors, Xi'an

Unearthed in Xi'an by unsuspecting rural workers in 1974, this enigmatic army of life-sized statues remains of the world's most remarkable archaeological finds. Dating back 2200 years, they were built to protect the underground tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Needless to say, meeting the warriors face to face is an experience you'll never forget.

People and street vendors in the Muslim Quarter in Xi’an, China

12. Xi'an

In a country where cities seemingly spring up overnight, this is one of the oldest and grandest. Known to most for its extraordinary Terracotta Warriors, Xi'an is also remarkable in its own right – notably as the beginning of the Silk Road, a trade route with a legacy that remains intact within its atmospheric Muslim Quarter .

Visitors on the glass cliff walk at Tianmen Mtn, Zhangjiajie, China

13. Zhangjiajie

Rising dramatically from the subtropical forests of northwest Hunan , the pinnacle rock formations of  Zhangjiajie inspired the scenery in the film Avatar (2009). Take it all in as you walk over a vertiginous glass-bottom suspension bridge floating 300m (984ft) above ground. If that's not daring enough, you can bungee jump off it, too.

As side gate of the Hall of Preserving Harmony on a snowy day, Forbidden City, Beijing, China

14. Forbidden City, Beijing

Among China's imperial sights, none can compare in size, grandeur or mystique to Beijing's Forbidden City . Built between 1406 and 1420, this sprawling palace was off-limits for 500 years until the overthrow of the last Qing emperor in 1911. Today, it's very much open to the public, attracting nearly 20 million visitors each year. Despite the crowds, its massive scale remains humbling.

Yangshuo is an iconic symbol of Guilin's scenery and there is an old saying goes, “Guilin’s scenery is peerless in the world, and Yangshuo’s scenery is the best in Guilin”. With a plethora of captivating attractions, the Li River scenic area, the world's largest and most enchanting karst tourism destination, boasts four outstanding wonders of Guilin – lush green hills, meandering rivers of unparalleled beauty, intriguing caves tucked away in the peaks, and magnificent stones that inspire awe.

4. Three Gorges' Splendor: Enjoynable Cruising and Yangtze River's Grandeur

Type : Geologic Formations, Bodies of Water, Nature & Parks.

Best Travel Time : March ~ December

Location : Yangtze River, Chongqing & Yichang, Hubei, China.

The Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, comprised of Qutang Gorge, Wuxia Gorge, and Xiling Gorge, stand as the cultural emblem of Chongqing and grace the 10RMB Note with the image of Qutang Gorge. They represent one of the cradles of ancient Chinese culture. Journeying from Yibin in Sichuan, the Yangtze River meanders through Chongqing and Yichang in Hubei. As it courses downstream, it traverses the Wushan Ranges, carving out the renowned trio of grand canyons—a historic water route to Eastern China. The construction of the Three Gorges Dam has transformed the Yangtze River Cruise through the Three Gorges into a globally sought-after China tour.

Spanning 193 kilometers, this spectacular belt of gorges begins in Baidi City, Fengjie County, Chongqing in the west, and concludes at Nanjin Pass, Yichang, Hubei in the east. Steeply rising peaks and cliffs adorn both riversides. The Qutang Gorge , a mere 8 kilometers in length yet the grandest of them all, unfolds in Chongqing, where towering bluffs reach heights of hundreds of meters. Moving to the middle, the Wuxia Gorge stretches 46 kilometers in a picturesque, sinuous gallery showcasing deep valleys, winding rivers, and ever-changing green hills. The longest segment, Xiling Gorge, extending 120 kilometers, serves as the most thrilling shipping channel, once extolled by ancient poets like Li Bai and Bai Juyi. At that moment, the authentic visage of the peaks emerges amidst the faint backdrop, as the floating clouds and mist weave through the mountainous terrain like a delicate veil. The landscape undergoes a perfect transformation every second, forming a fresh spectacle in the very next moment.

Besides, Huangshan captivates with its enchanting landscape featuring peculiar pine trees and extraordinary rock formations. The twisted pines exhibit a unique charm, their twisted branches defying gravity on the rugged cliffs, symbolizing both beauty and resilience. Complementing this are the fantastic rocks, carved by nature into shapes that range from animals to mythical figures, creating an ethereal atmosphere. Noteworthy among its scenic wonders are the Three Steps, One Stare , challenging pathways etched into the mountainside, and the Nine Dragon Waterfall , a cascading marvel of nature. Huangshan's allure lies not only in its breathtaking scenery but also in the rich cultural and artistic heritage it holds, making it a haven for those seeking inspiration and a deep connection with the wonders of the natural world.

The 10 Best Hikes in China

china nature trips

China’s landscapes have inspired legends, movies, and many a hiker with its seemingly floating mountains, deep gorges, and wild sections of the Great Wall. Hikers can trek alongside rice terraces, into massive bamboo forests, and through a landscape of rainbow mountains. Holy Daoist and Buddhist mountains provide several routes to their peaks, while a lake of changing colors in the north offers treks along a boardwalk with glimpses of grasslands. To find out where these routes are, read on to discover some of the landscapes and lore of the best hikes in China.

Tiger Leaping Gorge

Tiger Leaping Gorge's eponymously named trail snakes for 18 miles between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Snow Mountain, high above the creamy brown Jinsha River. Well-known but not crowded or overdeveloped, it's located near Lijiang in Yunnan province. Mountain massifs, rice terraces, waterfalls, villages, and forests can be seen along the route. According to Chinese lore, a tiger once took a mighty leap across the river to evade a hunter, giving the gorge its name. Usually hiked in two days, it begins with a somewhat steep ascent of about two hours, followed by 28 bends (moderate switchbacks), then levels out. Several guesthouses on the trail provide warm meals, cold beer, and basic but comfortable rooms.

Hike the five peaks of China's most dangerous mountain, Huashan, only a 30-minute bullet train ride from Xi'an in Shaanxi province. One of China's five sacred Daoist mountains, the 7,066-foot-high Huashan used to hold monasteries and martial arts training grounds; however, its international fame comes from its narrow via ferratas. The Plank Walk, a series of boards secured to the mountain only a foot-wide, leads to a shrine on the south peak and the other via ferrata leads hikers to the Chess Pavilion. Safety harnesses can be rented onsite. To hike all the peaks, the route is just over 13.6 miles.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Just outside of Zhangjiajie in Hunan province, the landscape of quartz-sandstone spires rising from the mist inspired the floating mountains of the movie "Avatar." Most visitors spend at least two days in the park, though five is ideal for exploring its many trails. Must-do treks include the Golden Whip Trail to Avatar's Halleluiah Mountain (3.9 miles) to see the park's most famous spire and Tianzi Mountain (15.4 miles), which zigzags through forests and along cliff ledges to multiple viewing platforms of the park's over 3,000 spires. Expect lots of tourists, as 4 million people visit the park yearly.

Longji Rice Terraces

Translated as the "Dragon's Backbone," these terraces lie 50 miles north of Guilin and are composed of two areas: the Ping'an Rice Terraces and the Jinkeng Rice Terraces, colloquially known as the Dazhai rice terraces. Unlike other rice terraces in China, these can be visited year-round for views of water-laden mirrored tiers, green saplings, or golden ripe rice, depending on the season. Most hikers opt for short hikes through the terraces, particularly in Dazhai, where routes range from four to seven miles, but it's also possible to hike between Ping'an and Dazhai (about four to five hours). Besides the terraces themselves, hiking here allows trekkers to interact with some of the ethnic minority groups in China, the Yao, and Zhuang, who have farmed the area for the past 800 years.

Rainbow Mountains

Though not possible to hike on Gansu province’s Rainbow Mountains themselves due to the delicate nature of the colorful sedimentary rock layers, it is possible to hike the four viewing platforms with panoramic views of the mountains in Zhangye Danxia National Landform Geological Park. Located about a 30-minute car ride from the city of Zhangye, the mountains contain red sandstone, mudstone, and many other sedimentary rock layers of yellow, purple, and green formed by tectonic activity and river deposits. Boardwalks and stairs lead to the platforms (a 10 to 30-minute hike each), and a park bus takes visitors from one platform to the next. Come at sunset or sunrise to see the colors at their most vibrant.

Shunan Zhuhai National Park

Called the "Bamboo Sea," Shunan Zhuhai National Park contains over 58 types of bamboo spread over 7,000 acres, making it China's largest bamboo forest. "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" was filmed here, and the air is known for being pure, sometimes referred to as a natural oxygen bar. With miles of trails, hikers can choose from different types of terrain, from the easy Wangyou Valley Trail (1.5 miles) winding through a bamboo corridor and along babbling brooks and waterfalls to the cliffside Tianbao Strongholds Trail. Shrines, stone carvings, and mushroom vendors make for colorful waypoints throughout the trail system. Reach the bamboo forest from Chengdu in about four to six hours by bus or train.

Emeishan (Mount Emei), the highest of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands at 10,167 feet in Sichuan province. From the Baoguo Monastery, trails consisting of over 60,000 stairs take hikers through forests with ornate bridges and packs of monkeys, up to peaceful pavilions, and eventually to the Golden Summit above the cloud line. Temples and monasteries along the path offer basic shared rooms for the night, as it takes at least two days to climb the mountain's 37-mile route. Take the hour-long journey on the highspeed train from Chengdu to reach Mount Emei and the nearby Leshan Giant Buddha.

Great Wall: Xiangshuihu Section

Hiking in the Xiangshuihu section of the Great Wall to the Health Preserving Valley feels like stumbling into a fairy tale land: wildflowers burst with color in the fields below, a thunderous spring gushes with pure water, and rocks scrawled with secret medicine recipes lie along the valley path. Walk along the dam to the Great Wall to Xiangshuihu’s highest watchtower and continue to the Health Preserving Valley, where hundreds of medicinal herbs grow. Though part of the wall here is restored, it’s not popular with tourists. There are some challenging wild sections if you head west where you will have to climb vertically. Located 50 miles north of Beijing in Dazhenyu Village, it can be reached by public bus.

Kanas Nature Reserve

China's deepest freshwater lake, green grasslands, mountains, and glaciers bring hikers to Xinjiang's Kanas Nature Reserve year-round. Kanas Lake changes colors with the season (sometimes turquoise, sometimes blue) and was named after Genghis Khan, who was said to have drunk from it. Several trails weave along the lake's boardwalk, past spruce and Korean pine trees and dragonflies flitting across the water. For the best view of the lake, trek to Guanyu (Fish-Watching) Pavilion. The path of 1,068 wooden stairs leads to two platforms offering panoramic views of the lake and glimpses (some say) of the monster which lives in its waters.

Great Wall: Shandan Section

In Gansu province, the Great Wall’s Shandan section stretches for over 100 miles through the Gobi Desert, allowing for peaceful trekking along unrestored parts of the wall. Built about 2,000 years ago during the Han Dynasty, it differs from other sections of the Great Wall, as it’s constructed of rammed earth instead of stone. Located between Lanzhou and the Jiayuguan Fort, herds of sheep, two-humped camels, and apricot orchards fill the fields on either side of the wall. Hikes here can be several hours or several weeks. Tourism in the area remains low, meaning you’ll have the wall primarily to yourself except for a few curious locals.

Wildlife Holidays in China

Lijiang, China Shutterstock 363488282

China is one of the world’s oldest continuous civilisations. Its religious and cultural influence has extended across the whole of East Asia and it is home to one of the earliest known specimens of Homo erectus – commonly referred to as Peking Man.

The first Chinese dynasty to leave written records was the Shang, which settled along the Yellow River in the 11th century, and in 1912 dynastic rule came to an end when the Republic of China was formed.

China is a vast country ranging from mainly mountains and plateaus in the west to lower country in the east. The great Himalayan range and the Tibetan plateau extend into south-east China. Here, three great Asian rivers – the Yangtze, Mekong and Salween – emerge from the heart of Tibet and forge their way towards the sea through the highest mountains in the world.

"China is probably best known for its Great Wall and the Panda but its botanical potential is superb. You could join us on our pioneering 22-day tour to Sichuan province, following the footsteps of the early plant-hunters."

Naturetrek Tours to China

Naturetrek offers two botanical holidays in China visiting north-western Yunnan and Sichuan. These tours focus primarily on flowers and culture, following in the footsteps of pioneering plant-hunters of the 19th century.

What’s special about the wildlife?

It has the richest temperate flora in the world. Yunnan and Sichuan provinces lie in the south-west and far west of China respectively, and it is to these remote areas our wildlife tours go, in search of their extraordinarily rich plant life.

Some highlights of our wild flower tours in China :

  • Herbaceous plants such as Primula, Lilium and Anemone species, as well as Cornus, Acer and Rhododendron species among the myriad of woody plants
  • All the Meconopsis species (poppies) – blue, yellow and red, including Meconopsis punicea
  • Lilium species, including Lilium regale
  • A wonderful variety of orchids including the stunning slipper orchids
  • Breathtaking scenery including that of the Tibetan Plateau
