Danzig is an American hardcore punk act that developed as a predecessor to Glenn Danzig’s former bands the Misfits and Samhain. The group focuses on exaggerated themes of the macabre and exert a style reminiscent of the heavy gloom ridden sound heard from artists like Ozzy Osbourne and the Doors.

Though Danzig is perhaps best remembered as the original singer of the horror punk group the Misfits, it was his second group Samhain, which acted as the basis for his future musical endeavors. The band Danzig formed in response to Rick Rubin’s excitement with Samhain’s final performance. After Rubin saw the show he was set on signing lead singer Glenn Danzig to his record label as a solo act; however, Danzig refused to sign on unless he was accompanied by Samhain bass player Eerie Von. Ex-Samhain guitarist John Christ and Chuck Biscuits from D.O.A., Black Flag, and Circle Jerks also joined the line up in 1987.

Danzig took the gothic theatrics exhibited throughout his previous career to new heights with the release of his self-titled debut. The album was produced by recording engineer mastermind Rick Rubin and put out on his Def American Recordings label. The album is the band’s best selling album and since its release date it has reached Platinum status. The album was also garnered with critical praise; however, it did take a few years for the record to catch on with the public. Five years after its release the song “Mother” became a huge hit on MTV and it has since gone on to be featured in various video games such as “Guitar Hero” and movies like “The Hangover Part III”. The album has also been a major influence on a wide range of artists such as James Hetfield of Metallica, who provided backing vocals on a few of the album’s songs and cult folk musician Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, who performed a cover of “Am I a Demon”.

Danzig’s next album “Danzig II: Lucifuge” was released in1990 and featured concepts heavily extracted from historic blues artists such as Howlin’ Wolf and Robert Johnson. The album fixates on themes of mortality, evil, the supernatural, and darkness.

By the release of the band’s third album Rick Rubin’s involvement in the group began to diminish and Danzig took greater part in the production of future album releases. Rubin was involved with all the group’s studio albums up until their 1994 release “Danzig 4”. This record contained the semi-hit “Cantspeaak”, which became a MTV favorite as well as the only single other than “Mother” to make it into the Billboard charts.

After this release Danzig left Rubin’s label to join Hollywood Records and put out a 5th studio album entitled “Blackacidevil”. This release not only saw a departure form Rubin’s idiosyncratic production work, but also one from the classic Danzig lineup. The only original member left in the group at this time was lead singer Glenn Danzig. “Blackacidevil” was largely seen as a solo release from Glenn Danzig. However this was not his first solo attempt. In 1992 Glenn Danzig put out an entirely instrumental full length entitled “Black Aria”. The album though instrumental displayed strong religious themes concerning Lucifer’s descent from god and its musical nature was haunting and atmospherically heavy. Despite the stylistic change, the album managed to do commercially well relative to its genre and entered the Billboard Classical Charts at No. 1.

On Danzig’s sixth studio album “Satan’s Child” he went in a more industrial direction and recorded the whole thing digitally. “Thirteen” (a dark bluesy ballad originally written for Johnny Cash) was a standout on the album. It was featured in the movie “Hangover” and was later covered by Mark Kozelek of Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon.

The 2000s were marked by three full length releases from the band: “Danzig 777: I Luciferi” (2002), “Circle of Snakes” (2004) and “Deth Red Sabaoth” (2010). Also Glenn Danzig released “Black Aria II”, the follow up to his debut solo recording. A year later Danzig worked on compiling a 26 song retrospective of lost material spanning the band’s entire career.

Around this time Danzig stated that he had grown tired with the cyclical system of widespread tours and resultantly opted for more localized and smaller scale tours. However for the band’s 20th anniversary he embarked on a lengthy US tour that also stopped off in Mexico and Canada.

Danzig has played many notable festivals over the years including the “Download Festival” and “Nova Rock Festival” alongside acts such as Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie, and System of a Down.

Live reviews

Attending a Danzig concert is not a far comparison from stepping down into the underworld to join a party of fiends, but this is the type of excitement fans anticipate a Danzig concert to incite.

Danzig is fronted by the legendary Misfits’ singer Glenn Danzig, who takes the same amount of force and energy that he showed from his previous days in Misfits and acts it out in full force when performing with Danzig. The band is sure to terrify their audience’s soul with the blasting sound of their doom metal music, but their fans are sure to love every second of it. Danzig has incredible stage presence and dynamics. The guitar player is performing fast atonal riffs on his guitar in a punk style and is running all over stage jumping up in the air with inspiration. The bass player is rapidly performing intense rhythms that pulse through the air-waves all while ferociously head banging to the music. Glenn Danzig is perhaps the most fierce member on stage, running all over the place, getting up in his audience’s faces, and screaming his intense lyrics at them.

The band is all dressed in a dark, ghoulish manner with long, black hair, all black attire, and tattoos exposed over their bodies. The guitarist also elaborates with the dark vibe they are giving off by performing on a guitar with skeleton bones painted over it. The stage is dimly lit with dark blue and purple lights, while intense bursts of bright lights flare on stage. There is also a huge screen in the background exhibiting different shades of red lights that are reminiscent of something you would see in the pits of hell. The stage is also decorated with demonic looking statues that depict the images of skull bones.

When seeing Danzig live you are definitely in for a fierce and unique experience that will be sure to grab your attention. Recently Danzig has been performing live with Misfits’ former guitarist Doyle, so you know you can expect to hear the band crank out some classic Misfits’ songs.

Danzig is the brain child of singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig, who formerly found fame with Misfits and Samhain. The mixture of horror punk and doom blues is a pretty niche genre and it is definitely not something for the faint hearted. When you enter into a Danzig concert, you enter into the whole mentality that goes along with the music. There is a real lack of real theatrics and character in modern metal so it is fantastic to see Danzig doing something pretty different.

They definitely attract a loyal following who all know the procedure when it comes to their concerts, everybody has their hands in the air as Glenn roars the introductions of 'Hammer of the Gods'. This level of intensity remains consistent from both performer and patron, the stage operation is a demonic setting with thrashing instrumentals whilst the pit of audience members is swirling chaos. The influence of Black Sabbath is incredibly obvious on 'How the Gods Kill' before they reappear for a tribute to Misfits and close with 'Not of This World' to the battered, bruised crowds.

The old devil still has it!! Great show, he got old but didn't lose the strength!

Sound was a bit low on the vocals...

But really enjoyed it!!

Beware photographers: Danzig didn't allow pictures or video on the UK O2 Brixton Academy, the securities were really over the people on this. I emailed them asking why and they said the artist requested no pictures/video.

Otherwise, O2 Brixton Academy is one of the best gig venues of London hands down!!

Danzig always puts on a great show. What I don't get is why he keeps coming to The Palladium. The sound sucks and the no moshing/crowd surfing rules blow! I'll keep going because the Rock and Shock convention is fun and I am a huge Danzig fan. But the Palladium really takes away from the experience.

Would have been great to see him with Corrosion of Conformity, but it was cancelled due to "unforeseen circumstances ". I was sooo looking forward to this concert! So very bummed that it was cancelled. At least I found out in early enough time so that I could get my hotel cost refunded.

Wow what a great show!! Vocal sound was not loud enough but was awesome! Danzig rocks!!! We sat in the lower loge and the warfield is such a great venue. The crowd was loud and crazy. Good times!

I love the band but the sound was terrible. No bass, guitar way too loud vs other instruments and too distorted and drums very thick. not the best show i've seen from Danzig.

An auteur on top of being a musician, Glenn Danzig last year released his second motion picture, the "vampire spaghetti western" Death Rider in the House of Vampires . It followed his directorial debut, the 2019 horror anthology Verotika , based on his  Verotika comic series.

Danzig Announces 2023 Tour Celebrating 35th Anniversary of Debut Album

by Tiffany Goldstein May 26, 2023, 9:55 am

It’s been 35 years since the heavy metal band Danzig released their self-titled album in 1988. Danzig plans to hit the road this summer, to celebrate the record that changed the trajectory of their career.

Videos by American Songwriter

The musicians turned to social media Thursday evening (May 25) to announce the news.

“DANZIG announces a string of 35th Anniversary Live Dates performing the 1st Classic Album in it’s entirety,” read the statement on Facebook . “These will be the Only DANZIG Shows for the foreseeable future so do not miss this opportunity to see these rare DANZIG Performances.”

Polish band Behemoth and Twin Temple & Midnight will serve as direct support on the run. The trek will begin in Las Vegas, Nevada, on August 25 and wrap in late September in Chicago, Illinois, at the Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom.

The band, composed of Glenn Danzig, Johnny Kelly, Steve Zing, and Tommy Victor, is expected to hit massive markets including Houston, Texas; Atlanta, Georgia; Boston, Massachusetts; and Cleveland, Ohio. Pre-sale tickets will be available starting Wednesday, May 31, at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster. The general sale will be open on Friday, June 2.

Danzig formed the band in 1987. After exploring the East Coast rock scene, the group became prominent musicians for their electrifying sound and grunge-like lyrics. Their 1988 track “Mother” propelled the group to stardom. The ensemble has released 12 studio albums.

Their debut album includes a handful of their biggest hits, such as “Am I Demon,” “Twist of Cain,” “Not of The World,” and “Soul On Fire.” Following the release, Danzig embarked on a world tour supporting the collection from 1988 to 1989. After their headlining run, they opened for Metallica on their And Justice for All Tour and Slayer. To date,  Danzig  is the band’s best-selling album.

Danzig has announced a Spring 2022 US tour featuring support from Cradle of Filth and Crobot on all dates. The brief two-week jaunt will include one special show that will find Danzig performing 1990’s Danzig II: Lucifuge in full.

The tour kicks off May 5th in Reno, Nevada, and runs through a May 19th show in Austin, Texas. Fans who attend the May 7th show in Ontario, California, will be treated to the full Danzig II: Lucifuge performance, as well as an additional opening set by Tiger Army in the direct support slot.

Danzig - Mother 93 Live

Danzig takes its name from frontman Glenn Danzig, who first broke into the music scene after founding the punk group Misfits in 1977, taking their name from the Marilyn Monroe film. Misfits were known for pioneering a new kind of punk, dubbed “horror punk,” blending stylistic elements of both punk and metal. After departing the Misfits, Danzig went on to form the group Samhain, who were only together for three years before legendary producer Rick Rubin scouted Danzig for his new label, Def American Records. Glenn and Samhain bassist Eerie Von signed with Rubin, and together they formed a new group, Danzig.

Danzig leaned heavier into its frontman’s metal influences and is still known today as one of the most influential metal groups of their time. The lineup has changed over the years, but the current tour will feature members Johnny Kelly on drums, Steve Zing on bass, and Tommy Victor on guitar alongside Glenn Danzig.

The tour will stop in Atlantic City, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, and more cities across the country from August 25th to September 17th. The group released its latest album, Black Laden Crown in 2017.

Glenn Danzig on Misfits, Odd "Mother" Requests, Why 2022 Tour May Be His Last

glenn danzig SHINN NYC, Travis Shinn

As always, Glenn Danzig is keeping busy — but he's being selective about it. The iconic hard-rock shouter/crooner for the bands Danzig, Samhain and the reunited Misfits will be back onstage for several performances this year, but he's also working on scripts to follow up on his first two films as an indie horror director: 2019's Verotika and his 2021 "vampire spaghetti western," Death Rider in the House of Vampires .

First comes a 10-date U.S. tour of his namesake band beginning May 5th in Reno, Nevada, and including a performance of Danzig II: Lucifuge in Ontario, California. As brief as the run is, Danzig says it may be his final multi-date tour, and he will likely focus on one-off live dates for the foreseeable future. There's also one Misfits gig lined up for the fall at Chicago's Riot Fest, and he may squeeze in another ballroom performance or two of songs from his 2020 tribute album, Danzig Sings Elvis .

The muscled man in black from Lodi, New Jersey, spoke with Revolver recently for an upcoming feature marking the 30th anniversary of his landmark classic, Danzig III: How the Gods Kill , but also caught us up below on his music, movies and Misfits.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THIS DANZIG TOUR? GLENN DANZIG It's not really much of a tour. It's 10 shows. I don't think I'm going to tour anymore. I'm just going to fly out to a show here or there. I'll maybe be down to do some one-offs. But I just don't see myself getting on a tour bus anymore.

SO, NO TOURS AFTER THIS? Yeah. I think I'm done.

ON THE SECOND NIGHT OF THIS RUN, IN ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA, YOU'RE PERFORMING DANZIG II: LUCIFUGE IN FULL. DO YOU LIKE PERFORMING ENTIRE ALBUMS LIVE? I don't mind doing it once in a while. This way it's kind of fun and doesn't wear itself out. You get an offer from something like Riot Fest or Psycho Las Vegas to do a whole album, that's OK. I wouldn't want to do a whole tour of that. When I'm placing the songs on an album, I'm trying to make you go on a ride. It's similar with a live show except a live show's a lot different than sitting in your room listening to a record.

IS THERE ANY NEW DANZIG MUSIC IN THE WORKS? I write songs here and there. Lately, I seem to be writing more soundtrack stuff. I don't know that I'm ever going to do another album again. I might do an EP or I might just record some songs and put them out for free on the internet. We'll see. It could be that right now I'm just not interested, and then a month from now I'll be in the studio. It depends. I've got to be excited about working in order to go do it. And right now I'm not that excited.

IS THAT PARTLY BECAUSE OF THE WAY PEOPLE CONSUME MUSIC NOW? It's a bunch of different things. I've been doing it so long, I've written so many songs — trying to get excited about it and bringing something new or something cool, it takes a little longer now. The other thing is that people are stealing music left and right. Nobody really buys music anymore. I still go in a real studio to record so I'm not some kid in my living room doing my record.

A LOT OF PEOPLE DID REALLY LIKE YOUR LAST ALBUM OF NEW SONGS, 2017'S BLACK LADEN CROWN . It came in Top 20 in Billboard , the first time since Danzig 4 . I don't know that it means that much anymore these days, because no one's buying, but it's kind of cool. People really liked Deth Red Sabaoth [2010] and people really like Black Laden Crown . So maybe I'll do an EP or something.

YOUR DANZIG SINGS ELVIS PROJECT FINALLY CAME OUT IN 2020. It was a big success. I've already been getting royalties for it, as a matter of fact, which is amazing. [ Laughs ] We have to re-press some vinyl because we're sold out of vinyl again. We did two shows right [in 2021] around Halloween at the Hollywood Roosevelt [Hotel, in Los Angeles]. I wanted it to be like an old Vegas vibe. They have a great ballroom there and we put tables in front and then seats behind. Those shows sold out. It was amazing.

YOU'D BEEN TALKING ABOUT THAT PROJECT A LONG TIME, SO I KNOW IT HAD SPECIAL MEANING FOR YOU. It was just a labor of love. I didn't expect to make any money really off of it. I just felt it would be cool to do and it seemed like a lot of people would love to hear it. I would bounce the idea off people — a great thing about meeting people when you're on the road is that you can bounce stuff off them. They're your fans, and they've been following you for sometimes 20, 30 years. There's nobody better to ask than them. So, it worked out great. I think I'm going to do a couple more Danzig/Elvis shows.

YOUR SONG "MOTHER" IS IN THE NEW SEASON OF RUSSIAN DOLL ON NETFLIX. I know Natasha [Lyonne], and she's a fan, and she requested to use the song. I got to meet everybody the other night at their season 2 party. Sometimes you get requests from people and you turn it down, but for her, "Yeah, no problem. You got it."

Blessing your timeline with this photo of Natasha Lyonne, GLENN DANZIG, and Amy Poehler. Together. pic.twitter.com/3sq26Nkqin — Ryan J. Downey (@ryandowney) April 12, 2022

HAS "MOTHER" TURNED UP IN MANY OTHER FILMS OR TELEVISION BEFORE? Yeah, I license it a lot to some people. I turned a lot of people down, but it's in The Hangover Part III . It's in a bunch of movies. I remember ABC was doing a Mother's Day thing and they asked to use it and I was like, "Ah, I don't know about that."

WHAT'S IN THE WORKS FOR YOU ON THE MOVIE FRONT? I'm working on four scripts. One of them is a Death Rider [ in the House of Vampires ] sequel that's almost done. And then there's a werewolf biker movie that I'm writing right now – they're all one-percenter outlaw bikers. It's really violent. [ Laughs ] Then there's a martial arts movie and a sequel to Verotika . So, we'll see what gets done first.

ARE YOU GOING TO APPEAR ON SCREEN AGAIN? If it's just a small role and if I'm directing, I can do it, but I would never put myself in a major role in a movie I'm directing. It's so hard doing a movie just to begin with, then add in having to learn lines and pop in front of the camera every now and then. I'd rather just be a secondary character.

REVOLVER 'S LAST COVER STORY WITH YOU WAS JUST BEFORE YOU BEGAN MAKING YOUR FIRST TWO MOVIES AS A DIRECTOR. HOW HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE AS A FILMMAKER TURNED OUT? The first one was tough. I had no money and I get to the set and all the things I need are not there. All of a sudden you're trying to make shit happen, so that was tough. The second one was a little easier. I also had a better budget on the second movie, too. Hopefully, with some of these new ones that I'm writing, I'll get an even better budget. I mean, what we're doing and what Hollywood is doing is night and day — they have, like, $100 million or even $50 million. We've got a tiny fraction of that. It would be nice getting a real budget to show what you can do.

IT'S LIKE BEING BACK MAKING PUNK ROCK RECORDS AGAIN? Pretty much, yeah. [ Laughs ] So you just have to make it attractive in other ways. It's a lot of work. It's a lot of bullshit, but in the end it's kind of satisfying. I can't say I'm totally there yet where I'm like, "Yeah, this is great," but I'm sure it's going to be like music where you're like, "Oh, I could've done this, I could have done that."

ARE THE MISFITS GOING TO CONTINUE IN YOUR FUTURE? We're doing Riot Fest [in Chicago] this year. We're doing the whole Walk Among Us record. So, we'll see if there's any other stuff [after that]. There's been talk. I have the whole fall off, unless I'm doing a movie or something — and I don't really like doing a movie during the winter. It's too cold. So, we'll see. There might be some Misfits shows.

NOW THAT YOU'VE DONE THE MISFITS REUNION SEVERAL TIMES, AND YOU SOUND OPEN TO MORE, HAS IT BEEN MORE FUN THAN YOU EXPECTED? It actually gets better each time we do it.

ZAKK WYLDE, ERIC JOHNSON And DWEEZIL ZAPPA Among Guitarists Taking Part In 2024 'Experience Hendrix' Tour

For the first time in five years, the "Experience Hendrix" tour, the critically acclaimed multi-artist celebration of Jimi Hendrix 's musical genius, returns to the concert trail with a slate of concert dates that offer the musical excellence of numerous topflight artists in celebration of the life and legacy of Jimi Hendrix . While there was a one-off event date in Austin, Texas in 2022, the last full-fledged (pre-pandemic) "Experience Hendrix" tour took place in 2019.

The concept for the "Experience Hendrix" tour dates back more than 25 years; what started as a single concert at San Diego's Street Scene in 2001 and 2002 expanded by 2004 into a full-fledged national tour. This year's outing marks the 20th anniversary of the "Experience Hendrix" tour. This year's tour bring the music of Jimi Hendrix to audiences in the Pacific Northwest, California, Nevada, Arizona New Mexico and eastward through Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee concluding in Georgia and Florida. Most fittingly, the tour kicks off on September 19 in Seattle, Jimi Hendrix 's hometown, at the Paramount Theater.

The tour presents a host of great artists collaborating and interpreting Hendrix 's legendary songs as part of a powerhouse, three-hour concert experience. The wide range of multi-generational artists who participate in a reflection of the ecumenicism of Jimi Hendrix 's classic repertoire and the diversity of those whose lives have been indelibly affected by his music. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is one of the major players in forthcoming edition of the "Experience Hendrix" tour and a veteran of previous "Experience Hendrix" outings.

Shepherd , a five-time Grammy nominee and recipient of two Billboard Music Awards , commented: "I'm excited to rejoin the 'Experience Hendrix' tour this year. It's always been a great tour with exceptional artists honoring Jimi Hendrix , the greatest guitar player of all time, and his amazing and expansive catalog of songs. Being able to do a tour with friends always makes for a great time and this show is not to be missed."

Other notable artists who are part of the tour this time out include the legendary blues icon Taj Mahal , Zakk Wylde , founder of BLACK LABEL SOCIETY and most recently part of the reformed PANTERA , Mississippi-born blues wunderkind Christone "Kingfish" Ingram who is both a Grammy Award winner and was named Contemporary "Blues Male Artist Of The Year" at least year's Blues Music Awards , guitar greats Eric Johnson and Dweezil Zappa , Mato Nanji from INDIGENOUS , Calvin Cooke and Chuck Campbell of the SLIDE BROTHERS , standard bearers of the "sacred steel" musical tradition, and vocalist Henri Brown . Participating artists vary for performance dates so "Experience Hendrix" concert goers are encouraged to visit experiencehendrixtour.com for specifics about each of the tour stops.

This year's tour will also present a host of rising stars including Texas born and raised blues sensation Ally Venable , who headlined the 60-date "European Blues Caravan" tour when she was just 20 years old, vocalist Dylan Triplett , Seattle guitarist Ayron Jones , young Brazilian blues rock guitarist Arthur Menezes and 20-year-old Mathias Lattin , winner of the Blues Foundation 's 2023 International Blues Challenge. Other artists joining the tour for select dates include Blues Music Award winner Samantha Fish and Stanley Jordan , the noted jazz guitarist who is an exponent of the two-handed tapping technique. Beyond these artists, special guests will drop in over the course of the tour. These include country music sensation Hunter Hayes , legendary DOORS guitarist Robby Krieger and many others to be announced.

The 2024 "Experience Hendrix" tour is sponsored by Marshall , Fender , Dunlop , Hal Leonard , JMH Productions , Experience Hendrix and Authentic Hendrix . Marshall amps have long been associated with Jimi Hendrix and were his amplifiers of choice during his career. Fender is now celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Fender Stratocaster, the guitar most often associated with Jimi Hendrix . Dunlop makers of gear and accessories, recently launched line of Authentic Hendrix '68 Shrine Series of stomp boxes/effects pedals while Hal Leonard , the world's largest print music publisher, has long had an association with Experience Hendrix, L.L.C.
