Tamanrasset ( Arabic : تامنراست) is an oasis city deep in Saharan Algeria . It is the capital of Tamanrasset Province, and has a population of around 100,000 people.

From its towering dunes to its traditional Berber villages, Tamanrasset is an excellent place to explore the Sahara Desert and its many attractions.

Tamanrasset is the capital of Tamanrasset Province, one of Algeria 's 58 provinces. With a population of about 100,000 residents, Tamanrasset is one of the least populated cities in Algeria .

Tamanrasset has archaeological monuments reaching back 600,000 to a million years.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ].

Entering Tamanrasset by plane is the most convenient way to get to the city. A flight to the city from Algiers should take you 2-3 hours, and the airport offers flights to a few other cities in Saharan Algeria.

By bus [ edit ]

Tamanrasset Bus Station (gare routière) is a 15-minute walk northwest of the city centre. There are daily services to In Salah, which takes 11 hours, Ghardaïa, which takes 19 to 20 hours, and Ouargla, which takes 22 hours. In addition, several private bus companies operate from Tamanrasset to Ghardia and In Salahi, with their offices mainly concentrated in the north-west of the city. These private companies operate mostly with 30-seater minibuses.

Long-distance taxis to Arak, In Salah, Ouargla and Ghardia leave from Emir Abdelkader Street in Tamanrasset. Taxis only leave when they are full. On the road to In Guezzam, on the border between Algeria and neighbouring Niger, about 2.5 km from the centre of Tamanrasset, there is a station from which shared four-wheel-drive taxis depart for In Guezzam. It is possible to hire taxis entirely on your own, or else they will only leave when full. Opposite the four-wheel drive taxi station is the truck station, from which trucks leave for the border town of In Guezzam and Niger. The trucks pick up passengers.

By car [ edit ]

If you have no knowledge of Algerian highways, no command of Arabic , French , or both, and no experience with driving in harsh areas, you should not enter Tamanrasset by road. The roads in the area are unpaved, narrow and winding, making them difficult to navigate.

Additionally, due to its remote location, there is little to no access to medical facilities and the risk of becoming stranded is high. It is also important to note that due to its location in the Sahara Desert, temperatures in the area can reach extreme highs during the day, making it dangerous to travel in the area.

Within Algeria [ edit ]

Although it is possible to drive to Tamanrasset from Algiers , the two cities are about 1,000 - 2,000 kilometres apart and the journey would take at least two days .

From Mali [ edit ]

Although it is possible to drive to Tamanrasset from Mali, this is strictly discouraged ; foreign governments advise that bandits, smugglers, and human traffickers have a huge presence in areas along the Algeria-Mali border.

From Niger [ edit ]

Although it is possible to drive to Tamanrasset from Niger, this is strictly discouraged due to the poor state of security in Northern Niger.

Taxis are the most common and convenient way to get around in Tamanrasset. Most of the taxis in the city are operated by local drivers, so it is important to negotiate the price before you get in the taxi.

As Tamanrasset is formed around an oasis, the area grows almonds, citrus fruits, maize, cereals, dates, peaches and apricots, among others. Agricultural produce is sold in the town's markets.

Most of the hotels are located a few kilometres from the city centre, but a few hotels are also located in the city centre. In Tamanrasset, overnight stays are often referred to as camping . Despite their name, these places are not camping sites, but offer accommodation in huts or bungalows.

There are relatively few hotels around town.

Tamanrasset, by and large, is an incredibly safe city.

The only real danger is the extreme heat of the Saharan Desert. Be sure to hydrate often and wear appropriate clothing to deal with the extreme heat.

Sites to Visit in Tamanrasset, Algeria

Tamanrasset is an oasis town located in the south of Algeria more than 1500 kilometers from Algiers. The city covers an area of approximately 38 square kilometers and is 1400 meters above sea level. Tamanrasset or “ Tam ” as it is called by the locals is the undisputed capital of the Hoggar. The city benefits from a hot desert climate and has little rain throughout the year. With its red houses and the magnificent panorama make the city a particularly warming place.

A Brief History

Beginning around 1980, the development of tourism brought economical benefits to Tamanrasset. The father of Foucault, officer of the French army that first came to the city in 1905, has left an important impression with his Bordj (a fortified establishment) located next to the Museum of Traditional Art, filled with pieces of beautiful crafts: jewelry, clothing, and weapons. The town market is also very attractive with its belt shops and street vendors.

Sites to Visit in Tamanrasset

When visiting Tamanrasset, there are several splendid sights to be visited. These are the hermitage of Charles Foucault, the monument Laperrine (this was the official name of the city during the French ruling), the Tamanrasset market and the Museum Opna. Another interesting site is the Sudanese style homes.

If you are looking for some adventure, you should definitely book a trip to explore the Sahara desert where you can see some incredible rock formations. Some travellers enjoy watching the sunset over the Sahara background while enjoying a nice cup of Algerian tea.

Located just a few kilometers away is the hot spring, Adriane. Close by are also two unique monuments – the tombs of Prince Moussa Ag and his cousin Dassine Ould Khemma. Both are popular sites among the locals.

Tamanrasset is the largest Tuareg city in Algeria. Nestled in the heart of the Hoggar rocky massif, it offers a multitude of routes for lovers of adventure and raids. To reach Tam, you have to cross almost all of Algeria over a distance of 2,000 km across the incredible trans-Saharan road. You will leave the capital city and pass through winding gorges populated by Barbary monkeys accustomed to being fed by motorists, then you will climb mountains sometimes covered with snow, before arriving on the cold and windy high plateaus that stretch as far as the eye can see to the gates of the Sahara that open onto the arid valley of the Mzab and its thousand-year-old Ghardaïa pentapole. And this is only the beginning; there is still a long way to go to Tamanrasset! After Ghardaïa, you will have your very first contact with the sand during the crossing of the Western Grand Erg where the city of El-Ménia and its immense palm grove are hidden. After the dunes, it is again the return of the stone with the immense rocky plateau of Tademaït over hundreds of kilometers before reaching In Salah, one of the hottest cities on earth. And it is only from there that you will be in Tuareg territory, where the incredible reliefs and landscapes of the Hoggar begin, until arriving at the city of Tamanrasset planted in the heart of the massif.

The weather is always fine in Tam, the air is fresh because the city is high up, at an altitude of 1400 m, surrounded by rocky peaks and mountains, visible from everywhere in the city, such as the Iharen Lion Peak or Mount Adriane, this large plateau that overlooks the city and gives it its unique visual identity. Here, men wear large, brightly coloured boubous and bazans, their faces are hidden in a scarf (chèche) skillfully wrapped around their heads, and women always drap themselves in traditional Tisseghness, this large square of fabric with striking patterns. The city is lively day and night, spacious and flat, everyone travels by bike or taxi, and sometimes even by camel!

Stroll around the city centre, at the main tourist attractions of the city. Take a look at the Assihar fair, a real African market, where you can find mangoes, exotic products or varied crafts of the region. Many shops offer specialties in silver or leather, with beautiful models of chiselled jewellery typically in Tuareg style, pretty boxes and African musical instruments at affordable prices. Right next to it are many small shops offering a taste of the mainama. If you have a strong stomach, try this local meat specialty grilled Nigerian style or try couscous with dromedary.

Not far from the African market is “La Frégate”, the first house built in Tamanrasset by the mystical Catholic father Charles de Foucault in 1905. Indeed, the city of Tamanrasset has only existed for a century, before that, there were only a few huts and the whole region was populated only by nomads who lived in rare small stone villages, isolated in the mountains and surrounded by gardens. 

Take your visit to Bordj Fortin, a museum and former ksar of the amenokal (Tuareg chief) Moussa Ag Mestan, in the old Soro district. For lovers of Tergui music, this is where you will find the latest guitar hits, so fill up with music and recharge your mp3 in discos, the local name of record sellers. As the Tuaregs are music lovers, concerts and festivals are often organized, with dromedary races, sword dance shows accompanied by the local violin, the Imzad, played by a woman surrounded by war drums.

The city is also the meeting point of several major Sahelian axes, towards Gao and Timbuktu in Mali and Agadès in Niger, that is why you will find many populations from these neighboring countries, who live and work in Tamanrasset, or on their way to the north of the country to migrate illegally.

After being impregnated with this very special desert city, take the tracks and leave the big city to explore its wild surroundings. As soon as you leave the city, and along the Wadi beds of Aguenar, Tagmarte and Outoul.you will be able to observe rock carvings of giraffes and other animals that have disappeared. 

Then continue your journey further and further, towards the splendid heights of the Hoggar massif, towards Mount Asskrem and the remote sedentary Tuareg villages. The road is magical, punctuated by the verdant and refreshing gueltas of Imlawlawane and Afilal, followed by long plains where you can drive freely and by stony paths gently leading you to the foot of the Tizouyeg, the most beautiful volcanic wall in the massif, before reaching the top of the Asskrem plateau at 2700m altitude. There is still father Foucault’ spiritual hermitage built of stone   where white fathers still live, retired at the top of the world. You can visit this hermitage and enjoy a cup of tea offered by these religious men who will tell you the history of the place. Asskrem overlooks a captivating landscape surrounded by a sea of rocks as far as the eye can see, it is known for its isolation and silence, with a unique sunset which the locals describe as the most beautiful in the world, with its fascinating gradation of colours on an impressive lunar and mineral landscape.

There are countless amazing sites all around the city of Tamanrasset, such as the sparkling water spring of Tahabort or the very old tomb of the Tuareg queen mother Tin-Hinan. Tamanrasset is the capital city of the province of Tamanrasset in the southern part of Algeria. It is located at an elevation of 1,320 meters, at 22°47′6″ N 5°31′22″ E, around 1930 kilometers south of Algiers, the capital of Algeria. It has only few tourist attractions including Maison de la Culture and visitors can consider it as a starting point of the Algerian tour as it is located in the southern end of Algeria and serve by an international airport.

The Tuareg people form the majority of the Tamanrasset’s population. Although experiencing hot desert climate, the weather of Tamanrasset is supportive for the productions of citrus fruits, almonds, figs and dates.

History of Tamanrasset:

Tamanrasset originated as a military outpost to defend the trade routes of Trans-Saharan. During the French rule in Algeria, Tamanrasset was called Fort Laperrine which was named after General François-Henry Laperrine. Tamanrasset was the site of the crash of Air Algérie Flight 6289 in 2003.

Getting Tamanrasset:

Aguenar – Hadj Bey Akhamok Airport is the airport serving Tamanrasset with scheduled flights from Algiers, Constantine, Djanet, El Golea, Ghardaia, Illizi, In Salah, Oran, Ouargla and Paris, catered by Air Algérie.

The airport is located 7 kilometers away from the center of Tamanrasset which can be reached by bus or taxi.

Tamanrasset is also connected to the national capital Algiers by bus services through the National road A1.

Visitors can get around Tamanrasset with rental cars are accessible in addition of availing buses.
