Kosovan DJ Regard, the producer of dance hits including "Ride It," "Secrets" and "You," gives a guide to the dance scene in his native country.

Kosovo-born producer Regard has been putting the Eastern European country on the map within the electronic world — and on the charts.

His 2019 dance hit “Ride It” (a remix of the 2008 track of the same name by English singer Jay Sean) spent 52 weeks on Billboard ‘s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, where it peaked at No. 3 and also crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100, spending 10 weeks on that chart and peaking at No. 62. Last year’s “Secrets,” a collaboration with RAYE, hit No. 8 on Dance/Electronic Songs, while his current hit “You” — a breezy collaboration with Troye Sivan and Tate McRae — is currently atop that same chart.

Based in Ferizaj, about an hour south of the Kosovan capital of Pristina, the producer born Dardan Aliu takes his DJ name from the French word “regarde,” meaning “to see.” He’s one of a string of artists with Kosovan roots, most notably including Dua Lipa, who are delivering pop music from the country — which declared its independence from Serbia in 2008 and currently holds a population of roughly 1.8 million.

The Best Club for Mainstream Dance Music Is:  Venom, in the capital of Pristina. It’s a really nice, brand new club that’s just opened in town, with three bars over two stories. I just played opening night, and it was amazing to be back on stage after such a long time. I can’t describe how happy it felt to be back, dancing with my people again.

The Best Club For Underground Dance Music Is:  Coco Club. It’s a little further away from the city centre in Pristina, but they do some great club nights with local artists. It’s always a really good vibe and a place my friends and I like to go to. 

The Best After Hours Party Spot Is:  Usually we head to someone’s house. Sometimes a friend’s rooftop where you can get the most amazing view of the sunrise.

The Best Local Festival Is:  Sunny Hill Festival – it’s the biggest festival in Kosovo, and I think almost the biggest in the region. [The festival was founded in 2018 by Dua Lipa’s father, Dukagjin Lipa.] It’s usually in August, but they had to postpone because of Covid, like a lot of others. Usually the line up is a good mix of international and local artists, Calvin Harris, Meduza and Miley Cyrus played the last one. Hopefully I’ll be able to play at the festival soon; that would be pretty amazing. 

A Few Key Producers In the Local Scene Are:  Drop G and Pluto Beats. Both of them produce dance, hip-hop, rap and commercial music. I worked with Drop G a lot in my early days of producing music – check him out on Youtube , he has some great house mixes there. Pluto Beats is a great producer too and doing some cool things; you might know a track he worked on – Flipp Dinero feat. Lil Baby, “ How I Move .”

A Few Recent Kosovan-Made Dance Tracks You Should Listen to Right Now Are:  “Pa ty” by Muma x Cricket — an Albanian producer.  He was also one of the producers behind a great track called “ Bonbon ” by Albanian artist Era Istrefi, which was released on Ultra a few years ago. There’s some amazing music coming out of Kosovo, not just dance tracks but some amazing [pop] artists as well — like Dua Lipa and Rita Ora who have Kosovan roots — and it’s great to see them get global recognition for it. 

One Thing I Want People in the U.S. to Understand About the Kosovan Scene Is:  Kosovo nightlife gives a feeling you’re living in a place like Ibiza/by the beach, because it’s very hot during the summer and people here go crazy for nightlife with a lot of events. Kosovo traditionally is known for celebrating events, especially weddings that continue for a week. The Kosovo scene is having a lot of influence on German and Swiss rap genres, but in the meantime female singers are breaking through with lots of success around the world like Dua Lipa, Rita Ora, Era Istrefi, etc. 

The Things That Make the Kosovan Scene Distinct Are:  Its talented producers, singers, songwriters, bands etc., that are beginning to get international recognition. But the country also has an amazing underground club scene for multiple genres of music; crowds go crazy at the shows, and we’re also so welcoming of international guests!

A Style of Music Happening Only in Kosovo Is:  There is so much great commercial rap and hip-hop coming out of Kosovo at the moment, with artists like  Ledri Vula, Noizy, 2Ton, Mozzik and Kidd a.

Field Coordinator for Kosovo for the South Eastern Europe Observatory (SEE-Obs), Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime

Dardan joined the GI-TOC in March 2022 as Field Coordinator for Kosovo for the South Eastern Europe Observatory. Dardan holds a degree in Management, Economics and Statistics from Rochester Institute of Technology and MA on Advanced European Studies from European College of Parma and the University of Parma. Additionally, he has completed various courses at George C. Marshall Center, Naval Postgraduate School/Center for Civil-Military Relations, and Geneva Centre for Security Policy.

Dardan has worked nine years for the Ministry of Internal Affairs covering strategic planning, policy coordination, international cooperation and EU integration process. Recently, he has worked for UNDP Kosovo as Project Manager of the project Support to Anti-Corruption Efforts in Kosovo. He is fluent in English and Italian and has some basic knowledge of French.

Aurela Kadriu: Introduce yourself. Your name, last name, age, profession…

Dardan Hoti: Ah okay, an introduction, an intro. Okay. I am Dardan Hoti, I come from Krusha e Madhe. I am 29 years old now (laughs) and I work as a journalist and a human rights activist. This is a short introduction of myself, in general.

Aurela Kadriu: Do you remember the summer of 2007?

Dardan Hoti: I don’t really remember what or how, how, what, what I did in 2007. I remember that like every other year I went on vacation (laughs) and I was a high school student. At that time I also started working in a restaurant and at the same time I was doing dancing activities with the Cultural Artistic Society in Krusha. So, some activities, festivals as far as I remember that I took part in while working. There was nothing special, I don’t remember it very well, now after ten years, almost eleven (laughs).

Aurela Kadriu: When did you, when did you first realize or when did you first hear that Kosovo will declare independence?

Dardan Hoti: Besides the information that we got through information preliminarily for… I already mentioned that I was in a dance group and we were informed a month or two earlier. We got some information that we should be prepared to have a, a show when Kosovo declared independence in the framework of Rahovec’s municipality. And in a way we started to get used to the term independence, and how it’s like to have… Kosovo to be independent.

And… But we did not focus on that part, we focused more on preparing that choreography, that event that was all our responsibility, we wanted to, we had… We were the only group in the municipality that had to do that event. So that, I mean maybe two months before this happened, before the declaration of independence we were somewhat informed. Even though there were questions whether it’s going to happen for sure, or not.

Aurela Kadriu: And where were you the day independence was declared?

Dardan Hoti: Half of the day I was in Krusha, my birth place. And the other half of the day I was in Rahovec at, at the event that the municipality of Rahovec held for the declaration of independence. So including the hours of getting ready and going there and… But at the time when independence was declared, it was at three in the afternoon as far as I remember, so I those moments I was in Rahovec waiting, waiting to celebrate as a part of the Cultural Artistic Society in Krusha.

Aurela Kadriu: Can you describe the atmosphere that day? What did you do, how was it?

Dardan Hoti: It was, as far as I remember, it was really cold and I know that our group of dancers experienced it really badly since we were wearing only some shirts. And it was the tension that every hour we were waiting for that to happen, that news. For the independence to be declared and we had to be ready so we had to stay outdoors most of the time people had gathered and everybody was waiting to celebrate and they were waiting for that moment. I got sick actually (laughs) I got a bad cold on that day because of… but there were people everywhere in the street waiting to celebrate, flags, music… I know that, I’m trying to remember every moment that happened, something more special. But this a summary of what happened until three o’clock, that we were waiting for that moment.

And then when the independence was declared we gathered, it seemed like it was organized, all the people in square where the event was happening. And I danced in front of hundreds, thousands of people that were, that gathered in that time.

Rick Heater U.S. Ambassador's representative, Ex-Officio

Rick Heater is the Economic and Commercial Officer at U.S. Embassy in Pristina. In this capacity, he advances the interests of the U.S. private sector; promotes women’s economic empowerment; and covers the labor, environmental, science, technology, and health sectors. He previously served in Zimbabwe, Mexico, and Sri Lanka. He holds a bachelor's degree from Fordham University and a master's degree from the American Graduate School in Paris.

Valon Lluka, Mabetex Holding JSC

Valon Lluka is the Executive Director of Mabetex Holding JSC, responsible for the company, and all companies that have been part of Mabetex Holding JSC since 2012. Lluka holds the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors at Banka Ekonomike as of June 2021 and Chairman of the Board of Directors at VIA - Vlora International Airport, as of May 2021. Throughout his professional experience, Lluka has proven skills to lead projects in various fields, in Kosovo and abroad, such as Albania, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Kazakhstan, the United Arab Emirates, the Republic of Ghana, Nigeria, etc. With 13 years of banking experience, starting from various supervisory positions at ProCredit Bank Kosovo, and ProCredit Bank Albania and continuing in the role of General Manager at Banka Ekonomike in Kosovo for 5 years, Lluka has contributed to the development of the sector banking, as a new post-war sector in Kosovo. Lluka was appointed Honorary Consul of the Republic of Ghana in the Republic of Kosovo, in 2015. During the period holding this position, Lluka has worked very closely with businesses in Kosovo and Albania, offering various opportunities to do business in the Republic of Ghana. He was also a board member of the Kosovo Banking Association, the Swiss Diamond Hotel, and Hirano Mushroom LLC. Lluka is also the co-author of the professional book "Money, Banks and Financial Markets."

Arianit Fazliu, Kutia Inc

As the CEO & Co-Founder of Kutia, Arianit is responsible for leading the company and executing its mission to serve its customers. He is a board member of Beetroot Academy in Kosovo and a startup investor. Arianit is passionate about both growth and leadership and is directing his many abilities toward making Kutia the leading company in the region. To his role, Arianit brings a decade of experience in management, software development, and leadership. Before starting Kutia, he was a software engineer. He continued his career at TopTal.com – a platform that contains only 3% of developers in the world. From 2013 until today, Kutia has provided digital solutions for local and international clients of various industries, having in their portfolio clients, startups, and companies

who have earned millions of dollars from various forms of investment. Arianit is certified as a Digital Transformation Expert and a Scrum Master.

He has also invested in:

• GaGa Këngë për fëmijë, an education platform (a YouTube channel) for kids, that promotes

learning the Albanian language through songs.

• Muza Rugs, is an initiative of Muza Interior company to produce rugs with Albanian motive.

Taulant Stublla, CISCO Systems Member of the Board

Taulant Stublla joined Cisco Systems in charge for Kosovo and North Macedonia market since 2016. He brings an experience of over 11 years in the field of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry in international companies. Prior to joining Cisco, Taulant held the position of Enterprise Sales Manager in one of the largest distributors in the region ITD. He was responsible for developing the market and increase sales for Cisco and Microsoft solutions. He joined ITD from Asseco SEE where he was Project Manager for implementing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Billing Systems mainly in financial/banking sector, utility companies, and government accounts in Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Albania. Taulant started his career at Asseco SEE in 2010, where, as Sales Specialist and later Key Account Manager has contributed for the development of software systems. Taulant combines a business-driven approach with engineering knowledge to facilitate the crafting of advanced solutions for governmental and commercial customers and to build relationships across all stakeholders of the industry. He orchestrates cross-functional team members to deliver complete solutions and capabilities with the focus on providing outstanding customer experience and building long-lasting customer partnerships in a wide network partners. He has a successful track record in achieving and exceeding sales targets. Taulant has contributed to double numbers and diversify the focus countries’ portfolio, and he has a specific interest to promote seizing the benefits of ICT for digital transformation. For three years, Taulant is part of Cisco Systems Bulgaria, the hub for the region. He has finalized the Executive MBA in Financial Management in Sheffield University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Prishtina

Dardan Shala, Devolli

Born in Peja and graduated in Economics and Law. Working experience in both the Governmental (Kosovo Customs Service) and Private sectors. Founder of “D-Consulting” – Consulting company.

Currently, full-time engagement in “Devolli Corporation” in the position of General Director and Member of the Managing Board.

Dren Deva, Fresh Brothers LLC/Tafingo Member of the Board

Dren Deva was born on January 16th, 1988 in Mitrovica, Kosovo, and moved to New York when was 11 during the Kosovo war. He has a double degree in Finance and Marketing from Hofstra University in New York. Dren is an Albanian American Entrepreneur who has established 3 businesses in the US and Kosovo creating employment opportunities both in US and Kosovo. Dren has established the first ethnic Balkan IPTV OTT (Over the Top) Platform in 2008- FASTV Inc thus creating a Balkan TV Platform for the diaspora in North America, enabling the diaspora to watch TV channels live from back home, Video on Demand and many features. Today the corporation FASTV is one of the most wellknown and respected IPTV platforms in America and covers the majority of the Balkan population in North America. In 2017 Dren also created FreshAlb the first online Albanian supermarket serving Albanian and European groceries to the diaspora anywhere in North America. With 2-3 clicks customers can purchase favorite Albanian groceries and have them delivered to their doorstep anywhere in the US and Canada. FreshAlb is also referred to as the Albanian Amazon among the community in America as it is a very common shopping tool for the Albanian community who is nostalgic and loves consuming Albanian and European products. Tafingo LLC was also established during the 2020 pandemic and started operations in Kosovo in 2021. Tafingo is an online real estate marketplace for Kosovo, with plans to expand in Albania, Montenegro & North Macedonia. The mission of the company is to create an easy-to-use experience for consumers in Kosovo and diaspora who are interested in purchasing a property such as apartments, lands, homes in which customers can visit Tafingo.com see listings, 3D virtual tours of properties and get in touch with agents who can accommodate their requests.

An experienced leader, operations strategist, and executive with an entrepreneurial spirit and a real passion for building and developing businesses while challenging the status quo. Having 19+ years of track record of business executive management development he currently runs the Kosovo operations as co-founder and an Executive Management Board member at TIVE Inc. Boston Massachusetts and Tive Kosovo.

Shpend Nura, KEP Trust

Shpend Nura has more than 20 years of experience in the financial sector and consulting services. He worked for 10 years with Raiffeisen Bank in a different managerial position. Served as deputy

CEO for almost four years with BPB and has now been leading KEP Trust for 5 years in the position of CEO.

He is chairing the Board of AMIK for two mandates and serves as the chairperson of the Financial Sector Committee within AmCham. He is also a member of the Board of CEED.
