1. Malacanang Palace

This 175­ year-old palace is the president’s official residence. Over the years, the palace has been remodeled, expanded, demolished and rebuilt. It’s strategically situated in San Miguel.

The first known owner of the property was a Spaniard – DonLuis Rocha. The property was enclosed by a stone fence and comprised of a relatively large summer house built of stone, a bathhouse, and gardens. Luis later sold the property to Colonel Jose of the Spanish Army in 1802. In 1825, the property was purchased by the state.

2. Taal Volcano Lake

The enchanting Taal Volcano Lake is the smallest in the world. Originally, the Taal Volcano was referred to as Bombou. This volcano has 33 historical eruptions; its last major activity took place in 1965 and this catastrophic eruption caused the death of an estimated 6,000 people.

Although this volcano has been quiet for quite some time, it has shown signs of unrest since 1991.

3. Corregidor Island

The five-square-kilometer island – nicknamed “the Rock” – is also home to the barrack ruins, some historic relics, and secret passageways. One example is the Malinta tunnel, which was initially used as a bunker but later converted to a hospital thanks to its bomb-proof surface.

5. Pagsanjan Falls

The Pagsanjan Falls is one of the most famous in the Philippines. It is also known as Cavinti Falls or Magdapio Falls. The waterfall lies within the Pagsanjan Gorge National Park which covers an area of 152.4 hectares.

To get to the falls, one has to take a 2.5-hour river trip from the town of Pagsanjan. You can also get to the falls by hiking from Cavinti. The waterfall is located 3.2 kilometers from the Cavinti and Pagsanjan boundary.

6. Pinatubo Crater

The Pinatubo Crater is found on Mt. Pinatubo, which is about 90 kilometers (a 2 and a half hour drive) away from Manila.

The crater filled with water to form Lake Pinatubo after the mountain’s climactic eruption on 15th June 1991. The lake is 2,000 feet deep, making it the deepest in the Philippines.

Before the June 15 eruption, not much was known about the mountain’s eruptive history. This is because the mountain was deeply eroded and covered with dense forest. The massive eruption ejected about 10,000,000,000 tons of magma and brought a lethal mix of ash and rain.

7. Hidden Valley Springs

These secluded springs are wedged between two mystical mountains. The Hidden Valley Springs is a place full of invigorating gifts of nature, such as lush vegetation, flowers, trees, clear waters and most of all, inspiring scenery.

9. Fort Santiago

The fortress was first built by Mihguel Lopez de Legazpi, a Spanish conquistador. Fort Santiago is a really important historical site in Manila. Many people died in its prison’s dungeons during WWII and the Spanish Colonial Period.

It is here that one of the country’s national heroes was imprisoned before his execution. The Rizal shrine was erected in memory of Jose Rizal. At the shrine, expect to see Rizal’s footsteps embedded onto the ground in bronze.

10. Subic Bay

Subic Bay is located 100 kilometers to the northwest of Manila. Subic Bay comprises of the Hanjin shipyard, the town of Barrio Baretto, the former US naval base, the Municipality of Subic, as well as the erstwhile US defense housing area.

This bay that is located in the island of Luzon was recognized because of its deep and protected waters. However, its development was stalled due to lack of level terrain.

The once large US naval facility was shut down in 1992 after the end of the cold war. Over the years, Subic Bay functioned as an economic zone.

It’s the perfect place to take a short break without having to go too far from Manila, given that it has a number of recreational resorts. From hot springs, lakes, and private resorts, the province has a wide range of options for the entire family or barkada .

It is best known for its huge role back during WWII because given its rocky landscape (earning it the name “The Rock”) and strategic location, it helped form a line of defense against enemy forces to the country.

Mention La Union to locals and they will instantly tell you that it is known for surfing — after all, it is the surfing capital of North Luzon. Rest assured, if you’re not a surfer, the province has lots to offer you if you ever choose it as one of your weekend getaways from Manila (if not a day trip from Manila!).

For starters, head on over to San Juan. The coastline has great swells that will thrill any surfer and the peak season starts from October to March. • When you’re up for some food grub, check out Kubli Bistro, Bayler View, or Myrtle Park. .
• Chase waterfalls: First up, jot down Ditumabo Falls for its grand cascades. Reaching it will take a 20-minute trek, but you will love the cool waters as you wash away the sweat from the hike. Much like Tagaytay , Baguio is a favorite amongst locals when they want a chilly escape from Manila. It was originally built as a hill station in 1900 during the American Colonial Period — which will explain why a lot of the key locations’ names below are western in nature. Nevertheless, its high altitude warrants you to pack a jacket but it will be one of those weekend getaways from Manila that you will never forget!

Day Trips from Manila, Philippines

You could tour all of the 7,000 islands of the Philippines, but without Manila , the country’s resilient capital, you would not have the whole picture. There are so many things to do in Manila – you can take a Malacanang Palace tour, explore the famous waterfront promenade, visit the centuries-old Chinatown, or admire the colonial walled city of Intramuros in the heart of Old Manila. With the storied citadel of Fort Santiago and the baroque 17th-century San Agustin Church, both marvels of Spanish colonial architecture, standing side-by-side with modern skyscrapers, the densely populated ‘Pearl of the Orient’ can still surprise and enchant its visitors. In spite of all that, the high-tempo, bustling city streets and the expansive shanty towns can quickly become overbearing and have you looking for the nearest getaway from Manila. When that happens, you can always choose one of the many popular day trips from Manila for a change of scenery. Some of the most exhilarating, unique, and, frankly, best places to go near Manila include the fascinating Subic Bay , the majestic Pagsanjan Falls , the historic Corregidor Island , the scenic Taal Lake , and the idyllic Villa Escudero Coconut Plantation. Villa Escudero is located almost exactly 100 km (62 miles) southeast of Manila by road .

GETTING THERE

If you opt for a Villa Escudero day tour, it will take somewhere between two and two-and-a-half hours to get there by car via R-3 and the Pan-Philippine Highway , past Muntinlupa, Calamba, and San Pablo City.

You can also take the public bus to Villa Escudero. You need to take the bus going to Lucena, Quezon , operated by Jac Liner. The bus departs from the Buendia Terminal every 30 minutes, with the first trip at 5 AM, and the last at 10 PM. It takes two hours and thirty minutes to get to Villa Escudero, but you have to let the driver know where you’re going so he can drop you off right after the Quezon Arch near the gate of Villa Escudero.

WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT

For those looking for a nature trip near Manila, the Villa Escudero day tour is a welcome change after all the hustle and bustle of the big city. Villa Escudero is a self-contained working coconut plantation, founded in the 1880s and open to the public since 1981.  The plantations and resort area provide visitors with a unique insight into the Filipino country lifestyle a hundred years ago. Live music, cultural shows, and the carabao-drawn carriage are some of the trip’s highlights. There is also a gorgeous history museum housing various collectibles and artefacts inside a charming pink church . A Villa Escudero day tour costs 1,600 Philippine Pesos (1,250 September-November), with a welcome drink, a tour of the museum, a carabao cart ride, lunch at the waterfalls, and unrestricted use of outdoor recreational facilities included. The basic fee is equivalent to 30 USD . 

ACCOMMODATION OPTION

The Farm at San Benito is the absolute best place for a weekend getaway near Manila. Only 12 miles (19 km) from the Villa Escudero Museum, this beautiful property is tucked away in a lush 120-acre garden in Lipa City. One Day Trip from Manila to Tagaytay and Taal Volcano

Tagaytay, the popular holiday town overlooking Taal Lake, is located approximately 37 miles (60 km) south of Manila .

By car , the fastest way to get to Tagaytay is take the South Luzon Expressway to Santa Rosa, and then turn onto Santa Rosa – Tagaytay Road until you reach the Silang Junction South. The whole trip should take less than an hour and a half .

Alternatively, you can take the bus from the Araneta bus terminal in Quezon City. You will need to take the “Nasugbu-Tagaytay” line. There’s a bus every 30 minutes on average, and the ticket price is quite low- just 120 pesos (2-3 USD).

The town of Tagaytay itself is primarily known for its mild climate , which is much more bearable compared to Manila, and the fact that it is perched on top of a ridge overlooking Taal Volcano Island, located in the middle of Taal Lake . The volcano, which is still active, is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire , and can easily be reached by boat. From Tagaytay, you can enjoy amazing views of the Volcano Island and the lake. Some other nearby attractions include the historic People’s Park in The Sky, and the scenic Tagaytay Picnic Grove.

Naturally, there are no specified opening hours for the Taal Volcano Island. However, boat rides to the island are only available at a certain time of day, between 6 AM and 4 PM . If you want to rent a boat, it will set you back 1,500 pesos.

The Picnic Grove in Tagaytay is open from 7 AM till 7 PM . The admission fee is only 50 pesos. The grove is a great family getaway near Manila, where you can enjoy all kinds of mellow family-oriented activities , in addition to zip-lining (200-400 pesos) or horseback riding (350 pesos an hour).

Corregidor Island is a relatively unimposing island whose modest size belies its massive historic significance . Due to its location, it has always been strategically important, even during the Spanish colonial era and the subsequent Spanish–American War. Most of the historical landmarks on the island today memorialize the island’s vital role in World War II , when it was the site of two major, costly battles between the U.S. Army and the Imperial Japanese Army, one in 1942, and one in 1945. The devastation is evident in the ruins of the hospital on the island, while the remains of several artillery batteries still contain 12-inch mortars that were used to defend the island.

There are no accommodation options at Corregidor island, but you can stay near the ferry terminal in Manila at Hotel Jen Manila by Shangri-La , a beautiful property overlooking Manila Bay, with floor-to ceiling windows to really take in the sweeping views and the amazing sunset in the evening.

WWII and Corregidor Island: Historical Sightseeing Tour from Manila

In addition to a guided tour of Corregidor Island’s World War II sites, you can also count on hotel pick-up and transport in a comfortable air-conditioned coach, with lunch and round-trip ferry ride included in the price.

One Day Trip from Manila to Pagsanjan Falls

The road distance between Manila and Pagsanjan Falls is approximately 65 miles (105 km).

As per usual, public transportation options are limited, and getting to Pagsanjan Falls in a private or rented vehicle is by far the preferred mode of transportation . You can take the bus from Manila to Santa Cruz, Laguna (multiple stations), but then you’ll have to rent a jeep for Cavinti.

If you’re driving from Manila, just take the Pan-Philippine Highway south, and then, after the City of Calamba, continue onto Manila S Rd, National Hwy, and eventually the Pagsanjan – Cavinti Road.

First of all, Pagsanjan Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in the Philippines . Also known as Cavinti Falls, the three-drop waterfall is extremely secluded and an important subject of multiple local legends. The breathtaking site can be reached on foot or by shooting the rapids on dugout canoes downstream through the lush tropical gorge created by the Pagsanjan and Cavinti rivers. The gaping Devil’s cave behind the waterfall makes the falls look like a portal into another dimension. Due to their unique beauty, the falls and the surrounding area became a national park in 1939 ( Pagsanjan Gorge National Park ).

The area is open to the public from 8 AM till 3 PM . To get to the falls, you’ll either have to “shoot the rapids” or rent a small boat from Pagsanjan, the jump-off point. Expect to shell out 1250-1500 pesos (23-28 USD) per person, with the entrance fees, life vests, and the return-trip boat ride included. Tipping the boatmen is also expected – around 250 pesos (5 USD) is OK.

In spite of the relatively small number of properties in the small town of Pagsanjan, Casa Marina Bed and Breakfast manages to exceed expectations, with amazing views of the river from the terrace, and the traditional Spanish style of the old house, with colorful tiles, charming furniture, and distinctive architecture.

By car, you have to take the E1 expressway north until you reach Angeles, and then turn onto E4 to Olongapo.

One of the most popular city getaways in the Philippines, just a few hours of Manila, is Batangas, on Luzon Island. Though on an island, Batangas is not known for its beaches like elsewhere in the Philippines , however, the marine life is extremely diverse and earns Batangas the name, “Center of the Center of Marine Biodiversity.” The province is famously known for Taal Lake and the fabulous diving offered in Anilao. The best time to visit Batangas is between November and April during the dry season. Many people visit from May to July, but the temperatures are remarkably high, as well as the humidity. Some popular attractions in Batangas include hiking at the Taal Volcano, swim in the crater lake, which is said to have healing properties, or visit the historic buildings and sites at the Taal Heritage Town.

Corregidor Island

Corregidor Island is a historic small island where Americans fought with the Filipinos to protect the island from the Japanese in World War II. The island is one of the most important defensive sites for the capital of the Philippines, Manila, and unfortunately, the allied American and Filipino troops were not able to resist the Japanese in the end and Manila, and the bay, was captured. In 1945 however, the Philippines took Corregidor Island back, and no military action has happened since. The Corregidor Island still highlights evidence of wartime with the ruins of the World War II bases abandoned all across the island and buildings that were destroyed by the bombs and never cleared away. Some of these sites even still have guns and evidence of men living in the barracks. Visitors can only reach the island by private boat.

Daranak Falls

Visitors looking for a fun, outdoor day trip away from Manila will enjoy Tanay, Rizal, where they can visit the Daranak Falls. The province, just east of Manila, is a small town with several natural areas that have been developed for tourism, including the 14-meter high waterfalls. The crystal-clear water fills a 30-foot deep basin before flowing into a river that can be hiked along. The waterfalls are open from 8 am to 5 pm daily. Public transportation from Manila is available to Daranak Falls, and the area is often crowded in the summer and on weekends. No alcohol or pets are permitted at the park; however, visitors are allowed to swim in the basin. Local guides are also available to take people to Batlag Falls or Calinawan Cave nearby.

Fortune Island

Fortune Island is an abandoned island in Batangas that was once a private luxury resort island. The resort closed in 2006 due to the lack of access to fresh drinking water and the cost of bringing fresh water into the resort. An acropolis stands on top of a limestone cliff on Fortune Island. The island is accessible via boat from Fortune Island Resort, which now operates from the mainland. Visitors will pay an entrance fee to the resort, as well as a boat rental fee to go to the quiet, secluded island. Visitors to the island swim at the white sand beaches or cliff dive into the deep, yet calm waters. A lighthouse is also found on the island and reachable by hiking thirty minutes from the beach. Snorkeling and scuba diving are also fun, popular activities. There are a few natural wonders under the water on Fortune Island include Blue Holes, which are made up of sinkholes, Dutch freighter wreckage, and the Fortune NW coral formation. Some visitors also camp on the island.

Hidden Valley Springs

Tucked between two mountains in Laguna is a 110-acre tropical forest with natural springs called Hidden Valley Springs. The resort property features waterfalls and three spring pools in one of the most beautiful settings anyone could imagine. One of the pools is named Soda Pool because it tastes like a sugar-free sprite. The pools are surrounded by trees that are centuries old with paths that visitors can use to explore the forest. Wi-Fi and cell service is spotty at Hidden Valley Springs, but the resort’s goal is to be a relaxing oasis, away from the chaos of everyday life. The resort offers a buffet lunch or dinner for guests to enjoy in the dining hall each day.

Maungi Georeserve

There is a secret Sanctuary called the Masungi Georeserve in Baras Rizal. The reserve is 1,500 hectares of adventure for hikers, and thrill-seekers who can take guided tours at either 7:30 am or 1 pm daily. The 3-4 hour hike takes participants over rocky terrain, across rope bridges, into caves, amidst gorgeous tropical fauna to see sites such as limestone peaks, cave shelters, and even a web where you can lie high about the rocky reserve they dare and have a one-of-a-kind view of the Laguna de Bay. There are entrance fees to the Georeserve, but this fee includes a tour guide, helmet, and backpack rental, water, and a snack after the hike.

Mount Batulao

Mount Batulao is located in Nasugbu, Batangas, and features twelve peaks and amazing views of Batangas and Grass Ridges, both coastal towns in the Philippines. The mountain is an inactive volcano with deep gorges, jagged peaks, and many ridges. The area is known for its resorts and peaceful retreat centers just 53 miles from Manila. Mount Batulao is a great mountain for beginner-level hikers and climbers with the East Trail being the longest and most challenging route that takes hikers up to the summit and features a gradual ascent. There is also a campsite along this trail just before it starts getting a bit rocky. There are golf courses and clubhouses at the base of the mountain where the spas and resorts are found.

Mount Pinatubo

Mount Pinatubo is a dormant volcano that discharged in 1991 after six centuries of inactivity, releasing tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere and killing nearly 1000 people and destroying more than 100,000 homes. Today, the turquoise crater lake in the center attracts visitors from all over the world who can expect several hours of hiking and an ATV ride to reach their destination. Some of the activities that visitors can do in the Mount Pinatubo area include volcanic ash treatments at the various spas, visiting the Capas Shrine, go hiking, spend time at Museo de Tarlac, or attend mass at a centuries-old Spanish Catholic Cathedral. Visitors can also explore caves, hot springs, and historic homes that still exist in the province.

Pagsanjan Falls

Visitors who want to spend a day outdoors in the Philippines can visit Pagsanjan Falls, one of the country’s most famous tourist attractions in Laguna. While the falls are located in Cavinti, they are named after the nearby town of Pagsanjan because the falls are most often accessed through Pagsanjan. People who live in Cavinti refer to the falls as Magdapio Falls, which the indigenous people named the waterfalls originally. A one-hour boat ride from Pagsanjan takes visitors to the pool called Shooting the Rapids where they can witness the falls, then take a fast-paced ride downstream. Visitors who choose the Cavinti route to the falls will need a rappel to go down a 90-degree ladder, then raft the rest of the way to the falls. There are no vendors or amenities in the area, so visitors must make sure to bring enough food and water with them.

Potipot Beach

Visitors looking for a summer beach day away from Manila can enjoy the pristine beaches at Potipot, an Island destination in Zambales. Quezon Memorial Circle

The Quezon Memorial Circle was issued to be created in 1951 by Philippine President Sergio Osmena to honor the former president of the Philippines, Manuel L. Quezon. A competition was conducted to choose the designer, which Federico S. Ilustre won. A monument was erected at the center of the park and housed the President and his wife’s remains. Rizal Park, also called Luneta Park, is a large urban park with historic significance in the Philippines. Riding the horses on the islands is highly discouraged and considered dangerous.

Tagaytay Ridge

An ocean galleon is being constructed as an ongoing project that is based on concepts of 18th-century naval fleet ships. The exhibits at the Manila Acapulco Galleon Museum are presented chronologically and begin in the 16th century and continue to the end of the 19th century. The Galleon is also the first Southeast Asian museum to be created through collaboration with curators from across the globe.

10 Days Philippine Tour

Here is a review for the 10 day Philippines island hopping tour, which I just did (November 2023). CTPH TOURS organised the itinerary, transportation, accommodation and some activities. As other reviews point out, this is a self-led tour. The tour operator will send you a detailed itinerary at the beginning. They will also text reminders for the next day as the tour proceeds. All communication with the operator is by Whatsapp. This includes details of any pickups, flights, accommodation, etc. I was very happy with the arrangements. I visited Manila, Boracay, Cebu, Puerto Princesa and El Nido. The flight connections, transport, pickups were all well organised an there were no issues. I was happy with the accommodation. As expected, hotels were mostly 3-star hotels or equivalent. On reflection, I would have considered adding a few extra days in El Nido at the end to do more of the island hopping tours available at the location, and an extra day in Boracay. Overall I can recommend the experience. It was a convenient and easy way to experience a number of beautiful tours and locations in a short period of time. The price paid also seemed very fair.

A Week In Palawan, Philippines

Hello, It was organized well but still I want to underline some facts. The hotels and the hotel personel were fine, nice and always trying to help. The van was very crowded and we had an unconfortable transfer from Puerta Princesa to El Nido. And half of the passangers were not wearing face maskes. We had some little problems in El Nido part. The islands tour was cancelled because of bad weather but there should be a plan B for our only full day there, in El Nido. So with the help of hotel stuff we aranged an inland tour to visit different beaches there. The day we have left the Hotel in El Nido, we were told that a van would be waiting for us. Some time later we had learned that actually it is a treike that was waiting to pick us for the airport. On the wat to airport it just fell down a lagguage of us. It was broken. Anyway we have good memories and nothing very very important has occured. Thanks

16 Days Do The Philippines Group Adventure Tour

Alyssa is the best - she made this trip ome of my best life experiences she is dedicated, has alot of humour, is flexible and cool, also really did well particularly with the cotonavirus issues we had, making me feel safe and secure that we would not get stuck, and she ensured we were able to fly home with no issues. Highlights for me were partying in El Nido, the El Nido to Coron expedition which was just full of the most beautiful sunsets, beaches and cocktails! We had great company, bonfires and the whole vibe was just superb, this is exactly what you want when visting the Philippines. It was sad that because of the coronavirus we were not able to stay in siargao but now I have a reason to come back :) Alyssa did amazing it is not easy with a small group but i wouldn't change a thing regarding this tour and i would recommend it to anyone!

PhiIippines in a Week

Everything went well, we lost 1 day in Boracay because the flight in Montreal was so late, we stayed 1 night in Japan, good thing breakfast is included. We experienced budol budol in Cebu, we supposed to have pick up, but they told us to line up in the taxi, so we ended up paying the guy. I want to have refund from the day we lost, but CTPH tour said, not refundable anymore + the payment from the taxi. Our trip was fun, we met tourist and the Philippines is so beautiful. We love it❤️

13 Days Philippines Explorer with Boracay

The trip was great! I travelled with my mum and dad and we all really enjoyed it! The accommodation in most places was comfortable but the hotels in Boracay, Puerto Princesa and Tagaytay were way above what we expected! The activities included were great! Unfortunately, the underground river tour was cancelled due to bad weather but we were taken on an alternate tour and were given a small refund from Do ou Travel for the inconvenience.
