Located in the East Midnapore district of West Bengal, Digha is one of the most-visited tourist destinations in the state. This seaside tourist site garners several tourists from not only West Bengal but from different parts of India. As this site is located only 187 km from the capital of West Bengal,  Kolkata , residents of the city visit in Digha quite frequently. Digha is commonly known as the “Brighton of the East”.

One of the most famous attractions of Digha is its sea beach which is over 7 km long. Even though the sea beach of the town is pretty shallow, tourists often go there to enjoy the sea.

Many people do not know this, but Digha was one of the most favorite places of Warren Hastings. He was the person who discovered this site and converted Digha into a tourist site. While writing a letter to his wife, Warren Hastings described Digha as “Brighton of the East.” The discovery of this majestic site happened in 1780. In 1923, Digha again became the center of attention when the world-famous English traveler, John Frank Smith started residing there. He was so mesmerized by this town’s simple beauty, that he decided to stay there permanently. Even though you might know that the then chief minister of West Bengal was the pioneer of turning Digha into a lucrative tourist spot, you might not know that it is John Frank Smith, who convinced him to take that step.

Digha is a perfect site for a short weekend getaway. Most people visit there to blow off some steam. If you ever visit there, try watching the sunset and sunrise in Digha. The view of the sea in the said times is breathtakingly beautiful. Throughout the city, you will find palm trees. The location of these trees by the sea beach makes this town even more beautiful. One of the best things about Digha is that, as the beach is pretty shallow and located pretty far from the Bay of Bengal, you will be able to swim there without any fear. Apart from the sea beach, there are many places in Digha that you might have never heard about.

In this blog, we are going to discuss the best places in Digha in detail. Reaching Digha has become a lot easier after it got a railway station in 2004. The nearest airport from Digha is located in Kolkata. Usually, people rent cars from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose airport in Kolkata to visit Digha. Many people love to go to Digha by driving their cars. The route from Kolkata to Digha is quite beautiful and is great for a road trip.

Take a stroll on the smooth and warm beach, drink some coconut water, or relax in the embrace of nature while taking in the breathtaking vistas around you.

One of the most important initiatives that the West Bengal government worked on was renovating the Old Digha sea beach.

You will most certainly take pleasure in the view of the sea that you get from the vantage  point. If you want to purchase a memento from Digha, there is a quaint little market located close to the beach.

Shankarpur Beach

digha west bengal tourist destination

Chandipur Beach is one of the less well-known locations on the shore of the Bay of Bengal. The beach is often regarded as the best location for taking it easy and unwinding since it provides both a stunning view of the sea and emerald-coloured water. The beach is unlike the beaches found elsewhere in the area since the banks have suffered some erosion, and the water from the sea has produced a recession in the area.

For all of Digha’s visitors, the marine aquarium and regional centre are a must-see sight during their time here. Amarabati Park

digha west bengal tourist destination

Amarabati park is a haven of tranquillity away from the clamour and activity of the coastal community; it has verdant grassy meadows, a picture-perfect lake, and colourful flowering plants. The park’s popularity among visitors is likely due in part to the breathtaking panorama it offers of New Digha. Taking a boat ride is your best bet to get the most out of a one-hour trip through the forest. This new location has just opened its doors to the general public and has quickly established itself as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Digha area.

Digha Mohona Watch Point

digha west bengal tourist destination

Mohona Watch Point, located near Digha, is a popular tourist destination because it overlooks the point where the River Champa meets the Bay of Bengal. It provides breathtaking panoramas, not just of the dawn but also of the surroundings and the landscape beyond. In the mornings, the site also functions as a bustling fish market, where fishermen come to gather, pack, distribute, and transport many different kinds of fish to a wide variety of places.

There is no better place to be than at the market to feel the energetic nature of Digha’s business life. You can observe dried Bhetki and Hilsa of substantial sizes, both of which are available for purchase here. The Watch Point is a fascinating location; nevertheless, some people may be put off by the strong aroma of fish that permeates there.

New Digha is home to the exquisitely crafted showhouse combining park known as Jahaz Bari. The inside is adorned with sculptures of fish and dolphins, while the outside is fashioned in the style of a ship. Kajal Dighi Wonderland

Wonder Land, also known as Kajal Dighi, is a location that people of all ages would enjoy visiting. You may have a fantastic time at the park, which has a railway model and various swings for you to choose. Because there are so many activities and attractions geared toward children, you must pay a visit to this park if you travel with children. The location is well-known for its peaceful vistas, making it an excellent destination for tourists to check out. In addition, you may go boating here if you want.

digha west bengal tourist destination

When arriving in Digha by roadway, the Digha gate will be the very first sighting catching your attention. The Digha gate is not like any other entrance in the city. The gate is designed in such a way that it resembles a fishing boat from the outside. It was conceived as a way to pay homage to the fisherman, who constitute the most significant component of the economy of the town.

Because the Digha gate is well-known among travellers, many vacationers choose to take photos in front of it as a memento of their time in India. The gate’s colour scheme of white and blue works very well with the natural elements around it. If you go to the gate in the evening, you will see that it is lit up with lights to make it more festive. Even more stunning is the appearance of the gate when darkness falls.

The main thing that attracts visitors to Tajpur is its incredible virgin sea beach . You will notice lush green Tamarisk and Casuarina trees have covered the beachside. The green forest beside a calm sea increases the beauty of the place and offers great visual pleasure. It is one of the best sea beaches near Kolkata that can be visited easily.

You may be lucky enough to see the cast of red crabs that looks like a red carpet and it will surely amaze you. As you move forward, you might notice the crabs play hide and seek in the sand with you.

Birdwatching can also be an interesting activity at the place. You may notice about 34 species of birds that can be seen near Tajpur Beach. The presence of beautiful birds also makes the beach more alive. If you like birdwatching, you should carry the essential birding gear including a long-distance binocular to have a look at them in a better way.

In the early morning, a dazzling sunrise over the sea might fascinate you. The best place to witness the sunrise is near the estuary/ mohona which is located within 10-15 minutes’ walking distance towards the east by the beach.

During the sunset , the sun hides behind the trees by the beachside gradually. This time the reflection of the reddish sky on the wet beach surface creates a magical effect on the eyes.

There are a few shops on the beach where some food items such as pakodas and fish fries like pomfret, bhetki, prawn, and crab are available. While enjoying the beauty of the sea, these snacks can be perfect for an evening.

From Tajpur you might like to visit Digha , Mandarmani, and Shankarpur which lies a few kilometres away.

Mandarmani beach is also very popular to hang out with friends and family. At the end of the beach, towards the west direction, there is a Mohana/ Estuary which looks spectacular during sunset. On the other side of the estuary, Tajpur sea beach is located. This beach is perfect for relaxing and relishing. There are many hotels located just by the beach. You can spend the day simply relaxing by the sea and witnessing the magnificent view around.

Shankarpur is actually a fishing harbour, located just 7 Km away to the west side of Tajpur. It is the place where fishing boats gather and fishermen can be seen fishing. The beach is also exquisite with casuarinas and eucalyptus trees around. It was an underrated sea beach earlier. But recently, the West Bengal State Tourism department has revolutionized the area by setting up a Biswa Bangla Park.

Digha is a little further from Shankarpur. You can easily visit Digha from Tajpur and stay there for a day to explore it. The well-known mesmerizing beaches with many attractive viewpoints like the Science Centre, and Marine Aquarium, make it more attractive.

Best time to visit Tajpur

Throughout the year, you can visit Tajpur. But, during summer high temperature is high and it is hard to roam around the beach. The month of March to July should be avoidable. In the rainy season, you can get the beauty of the sea but it can be difficult in case of heavy rainfall. The Winter season is the best time to visit Tajpur. Frequently Asked Questions about Tajpur

Tajpur is well connected by road and train routes as well. There are several buses available from Esplanade Bus Stand that go to Digha via Balisai. From Balisai, you need to hire a Toto or Trekker. In the case of the train, reach Ramnagar railway station from Howrah. There are many modes of transport available to reach Tajpur from there.

Both places are fascinating. However, in Mandarmani, the hotels are exactly by the sea beach where you can spend some quality time even during the night. On the other hand, all the hotels at Tajpur are located at least 2 minutes of walking distance from the beach. But if you are looking for a better view of the sea beach, Tajpur is far better.

Tajpur is located just 18 Km away from Digha. To reach there by bus, it will take around 40 to 50 minutes.

To reach Ramnagar railway station, you need to book a Toto or Trekker from Tajpur. We advise booking it in advance, as the availability of such transport is not widely available.

Tajpur is worth visiting if you love sea beaches. It is a great weekend destination from Kolkata at a distance of 170 Km.

After the sunset, the beach becomes silent and lonely. So it is best to leave the beach before it gets dark. There is no security guard on the beach, so be careful about your own security. Apart from it, auto rickshaws and Totos are not regularly available. So it is better to book the cab in advance.

Tajpur is a wonderful place where you can spend some memorable moments with your loved one. This sea beach in West Bengal will never disappoint you. As an alternative to Tajpur, you can also visit Henry Island near Bakkhali to spend a couple of days.
