The best boat parties and booze cruises in NYC

Take your summer festivities to sea with a booze cruise or boat party in NYC.

This summer, the heat is on and the best way to cool down is to get out on the water. You athletic types can try kayaking NYC’s rivers , and landlubbers can stick to the city’s prominent waterfront restaurants and boat bars , but if you have any hint of seafaring fun in you, a boat party in NYC is one of the best things to do in the summer . Open waters, sea breezes and stunning views of Manhattan are all on tap when you embark on a booze cruise in NYC. Oh and did we mention full bars, great food, and live music?

Take your summer celebrations to the next level and set sail with these boat parties. There’s something for everyone, whether it’s a cantina-themed boat, a lobster-centric excursion, a fine dining cruise or a leisurely happy hour float. You’re more than welcome to rock the boat on a rock n roll cruise, and cocktails are tastier when sipped on a yacht. Check out these NYC boat parties for a totally nautical summer.

An email you’ll actually love

Boat parties in NYC

North River Lobster Company

1.  North River Lobster Company

  • Restaurants

North River Lobster Company , New York City’s beloved floating seafood restaurant since 2014, offers four daily sailings at 1pm, 3pm, 5pm and 7pm. Afternoon cruises are 1 hour and the 7pm cruise is a two-hour route to the Statue of Liberty and back—how beautiful! On the menu: Maine Lobster Rolls, seafood platters, burgers, and ready-to-share appetizers. New menu items this year include tuna tartare, clam dip and chips, The Skagen shrimp roll, and sweet lobster clawsicles in four different flavors (mango, piña colada, strawberry and lime). The best deal on board may be the $17 glass of rosé and 3 oyster special, or you can go all out with the epic 28-inch lobster roll (dubbed the world’s largest lobster roll) for $140, to feed a group.

La Barca Cantina

2.  La Barca Cantina

La Barca Cantina, the only Mexican restaurant on a boat in NYC, serves a summer street food-inspired menu that’ll get the party started for you and your friends. Based at Pier 81, next to its sister-restaurant North River Lobster Company, La Barca spans three levels with an expansive outdoor top deck with a bar and table seating, a bi-level interior space with two bars, table seating and booth-like tables—perfect for large groups.  Even better, it takes short cruises multiple times per day, five days a week, offering up sweeping views of the NYC skyline. (It's a must to reserve a table for cocktails at sunset.)

Alive After Five Happy Hour Cruise

3.  Alive After Five Happy Hour Cruise

You didn’t forget all about Happy Hour, did you? It’s basically your dang right after making it through your day job. Gather your clocked-out coworkers and friends and board the Alive After Five cruise, which makes the most of happy hour—it actually lasts two hours —along the Hudson River in City Cruises’ Sensation yacht. You’ll have two climate-controlled desks to choose from, plus a covered roof deck, and multiple dance floors if that’s your jam. And if you still have sea legs for social life after all that social distancing, the cruise has a DJ to get the party moving.

Rocks Off Concert Cruises

4.  Rocks Off Concert Cruises

If you’re looking for yacht rock, look away: the savvy organizers of this floating concert snare hard rock bands like Murphy’s Law, Badfish, and Electric Six that draw die hard fans for serious—and often seriously sweaty—rock sessions. They know the ropes when it comes to pulling off a bash in a boat, so make sure you’re ready for plenty of percussion and less calls for mutiny than encores.

Bateaux New York Dining Cruises

5.  Bateaux New York Dining Cruises

Is it really a party if you’re sitting down? Yes—it’s called a dinner party . On the fancier side (semi-formal dress is encouraged), this dinner cruise looks particularly swell inside the European-inspired Bateaux New York, a glass-roofed boat that soaks in Manhattan’s lit skyline after sunset while navigating the East and Hudson Rivers. The experience takes it up a notch with live music—a two-piece acoustic band led by a female vocalist—and takes dinner to the next level with seafood towers, filet mignon, and lobster tails.

Classic Cocktails with a Twist

6.  Classic Cocktails with a Twist

Head to Chelsea Piers and say cheers with an afternoon cocktail party aboard a 1920’s inspired yacht, an intimate little party boat that rounds out a 1.75 hour journey with modern riffs on old-school cocktails, like a Sake Gimlet or a Rosemary Rickey. The charter, Sail NYC, runs a tight ship—and we mean that literally, considering the boat’s smaller size—that’ll get you tipsy in no time. Yes, the focus is technically on the booze, but also on the views seen from the yacht’s large windows as you ease past classic sites like the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, and Ellis Island.

Evening Wine and Jazz Cruise

7.  Evening Wine and Jazz Cruise

Feeling snazzy? There’s just something about live jazz that brings pinky-up vibes, yet not too stuck up that you can’t pack your own picnic to bring on board. This Manhattan by Sail excursion takes place on the Shearwater Classic Schooner, a restored 1929 sailing ship, 82 feet long, with an original Rangoon teak deck and mahogany interiors. This year, you’ll get three glasses of wine plus an extra of good vibes: it partners with Keyed UP, a program by Jazz Generation that helps fund jazz performances across NYC, thus giving local jazz musicians—plus jazz in general—a boost.

Narwhal Yacht Charters

8.  Narwhal Yacht Charters

A party is what you make of it, especially when you make it your own . For a little more privacy, groups of up to six can rent their own excursion with Narwhal Yacht Charters—it’s on the pricier end, but the seasoned charter is worth their salt, having just celebrated its 10th season on NYC’s waters. The captain provides the necessities (bottled water, sodas, ice, napkins, that sorta stuff) but the rest is up to you. Pick up food from your favorite restaurant, bring all of your favorite booze, and set sail with your besties.

Carnival Sensation Review

Review of carnival sensation.

The 1993-built/2022- scrapped Carnival Sensation cruise ship was the third of CCL's all eight Fantasy-class liners, with sisterships Fantasy , Elation , Imagination , Inspiration , Paradise plus the "balcony ships" Fascination and Ecstasy .

The vessel (IMO number 8711356) was Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 309697000) and registered in Nassau .

On February 3, 2022, was announced that in 2022 the fleet will leave two boats - Carnival Sensation (1993-built/29-years-old) and Carnival Ecstasy (1991-built/31-years-old). The official announcement triggered the following deployment changes:

  • In Jacksonville, Ecstasy was replaced by Carnival Spirit, starting April 23rd. Ecstasy was repositioned to/homeported in Mobile for the period March 5 thru October 10. Carnival Sensation's Mobile schedule (Oct 15, 2022, thru April 27, 2024) was canceled.
  • In Australia, Carnival Splendor's schedule June 10 thru Sept 26, 2022, Carnival Spirit's schedule June 5, 2022, thru October 5, 2023, were canceled.
  • Following the operational pause (due to the COVID crisis), Sensation didn't restart operations for CCL. Ecstasy's last voyage for CCL was scheduled for October 10, 2022, from Mobile AL.

A total of 166x Carnival Sensation cruises out of Mobile Alabama (departures planned for the period March 5, 2022, thru April 27, 2024) were canceled. The itineraries included:

  • 4-day and 5-day Western Caribbean (Cozumel)

  • 10-day Panama Canal (Colon, Puerto Limon, Roatan, Cozumel) / Sept 11, 2023
  • 10-day Eastern Caribbean (Bimini, Grand Turk, Amber Cove, Grand Cayman, Cozumel) / Jan 29, 2024

History - construction and ownership

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is a US shipping company, trademarked brand and subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924-1999, co-founder of NCL Norwegian ).

CCL has the Corporation's largest fleet as number of vessels and GT-tonnage (ship sizes/volumes and passenger capacities). In 2023, CCL had ~9% (by revenue) and ~19% (passengers) share of the cruise industry's worldwide market. In 2024, the parent company (Carnival Corporation) had ~51% stake in the US$64+ billion industry.

The 2056-passenger ship Carnival Sensation arrived and was beached at Turkey's Aliaga Shipbreaking Yard on April 5, 2022, at 9:11 UTC. Her last voyage (Transatlantic crossing from Florida to Turkey) departed PortMiami on March 18th, at 18:37 UTC.

The vessel's AIS transmitted for the last time on April 7th (at 16:18 UTC).

Decks and Cabins

Carnival Sensation staterooms (1028 total, in 26 categories) include 54 Suites, 98 Balcony, 466 Oceanview and 408 Inside cabins. Most cabin balconies are sized 35 ft2 (3 m2). Most staterooms are sized 185 ft2 (17 m2). CCL Ecstasy ship has 25 wheelchair-accessible cabins (ADA staterooms adapted for passengers with disabilities). The largest (Grand Suites) are sized 330 ft2 / 31 m2 plus 115 ft2 / 11m2 terrace and accommodate up to 5 passengers. They feature sitting areas and spacious bathrooms with whirlpool bathtubs, separate shower, VIP services and amenities.

The boat has 13 decks , of which 10 are passenger-accessible and 5 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

During dinner hours, the two dining rooms - Ecstasy and Fantasy accommodate all Sensation's guests in two seatings (early at 6 pm and late at 8:15 pm) or with the flexible option "Your Choice Dining" program - anytime between 5:45 and 9:30 p.m. The Sea View Bar and Grill located on Lido Deck has a big traffic flow, but even when crowded, the tables are enough and offer purple plastic seats. The Star Wars decor meets largely high school clientele. The pizzeria is 24-hour open; fat-free yogurt and ice cream are also offered round-the-clock.

Carnival Sensation cruise ship

Unlike other Carnival ships, there is no specialty restaurant or Supper Club onboard Carnival Sensation. However, as is also available on all of the Fun ships is Chef's Table - a dining experience that affords a dozen guests a multicourse dinner with a private cocktail reception, a tour of the galley/kitchen and a master chef. This dining option takes place in a non-traditional venue, like the library or the galley, and can be booked onboard for US$75 per person.

Follows the complete list of Carnival Sensation restaurants and food bars.

  • Fantasy Dining Room (658-seat, forward Main Dining Room, with two fixed dinner seatings, or Your Time Dining; offers themed breakfasts - Seuss At Sea, for $5 cover charge)
  • Ecstasy Dining Room (650-seat, aft Main Dining Room, with two fixed dinner seatings).
  • Seaview Lido Buffet Restaurant (722-seat, complimentary self-service restaurant with various food stations; operates as a bistro in the evenings).
  • Sushi Bar (complimentary).

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Carnival Sensation is still an amazing value for families and first-timers, despite her age. The vessel has the signature Camp Carnival with programs for youngsters among the ages of 2 and 17 years, an immensely congenial and up-for-anything crew, and worthy sun deck additions (waterslide and adults-only place).

Fantasia Lounge hosts always-popular Vegas-style show productions that are high-energy, with great lighting and special effects. In addition to Fantasia's song-and-dance revues, a late-night comic entertains adults in Plaza Lounge. Classical music is often scheduled in the atrium. Live dance and music venues are available daily.

The Touch of Class piano bar boasts bar seats that are shaped like big hands. This unique hot spot often turns out to be a standing room as guests enjoy the sing-alongs and can take part in the music without having to face the audience a la karaoke. Even though young people make up much of the bar's audience, some of the music appeals to George Gershwin and Irving Berlin fans.

Itineraries

Carnival Sensation itinerary program was based on 4-day and 5-day Western Caribbean roundtrips departing from homeport Mobile Alabama to Mexico ( Cozumel , and Cozumel with Progreso or Costa Maya ).

In 2019 were offered a total of 17x new 5-day itineraries to Cuba leaving roundtrip from Miami . Each itinerary featured a day-long port stay in Havana . The other call ports were Grand Turk, Grand Cayman, Bahamas (Nassau, Half Moon Cay, Princess Cays). With the new voyages was expanded CCL's Florida to Cuba 2019 program, which also included Carnival Paradise (out of Tampa ).

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, the Carnival ship Sensation was to be paused for ~2 years (between March 2020-2022). The restart was scheduled for March 5th, 2022 (Mobile to Western Caribbean). However, in February 2022, the Australian program of Carnival Spirit was replaced with Sensation's Caribbean schedule (based on homeporting in Jacksonville Florida ) and soon was announced that Sensation will leave the fleet in 2022. Sensation's Mobile schedule (Oct 15, 2022, thru Sept 30, 2023) was canceled.

Carnival Sensation Wiki

Fun Ship 2.0 upgrades were started in 2014 and completed in 2017. Sensation is one of Carnival's oldest (Fantasy-class) liners with sisterships Ecstasy , Elation , Fantasy , Fascination , Imagination , Inspiration , Paradise .

The vessel was christened by four godmothers (all Carnival Cruise Line's VPs/Vice Presidents - Roberta Jacoby, Vicki Freed, Gerry Donnelly, and Cherie Weinstein.

Carnival Sensation ( Helsing shipyard/hull number 484) was powered by Wartsila-Sulzer marine diesel engines (models 8ZAV40S and 8ZAL40) generating total power output 42,24 MW.

The Inaugural Cruise/Maiden Voyage started on November 1, 1993. The homeporting in Tampa Florida started in December 1998, with 7-day roundtrips visiting Grand Cayman, Cozumel Mexico, and NOLA-New Orleans. In 2000, the liner was reflagged from Liberia ( Monrovia ) to Bahamas (Nassau). In October 2004 started the homeporting in New Orleans , for 4- and 5-day roundtrips to Mexico (Cozumel and Costa Maya). Following Hurricane Katrina (2005) Sensation was charted for 6 months by the US Government to serve as a hotel ship for refugees.

Following a major drydock in 2006 (the 9-hole Mini-Golf Course was installed), in March started the homeporting in Port Canaveral/Orlando for short breaks to The Bahamas. In 2007, MS Sensation was officially renamed "Carnival Sensation".

The vessel was extensively drydock refitted in February 2009 ("Fun Ship 1.0" / "Evolution of Fun"). During the 35-day refurbishment were added new balconies (98 total) to existing cabins, as well as the "Serenity" (adults-only resort sundeck), Carnival WaterWorks (aquapark) and the children's complex Camp Carnival.

In February 2016 started the homeporting in Miami , with 4- and 5-day Caribbean roundtrips visiting Mexico and Bahamas. In 2019, for a short period Sensation operated roundtrips from PortMiami to Cuba ( Havana ). On March 9, 2020, Carnival Sensation departed on her last cruise. The 5-day Miami roundtrip visited Grand Cayman and Jamaica (Ocho Rios). On February 3, 2022, CCL announced the liner's retirement, and on March 18th she left PortMiami en route to Aliaga Turkey for scrapping.

Next table shows the very last voyage scheduled for Carnival Sensation.

(2024) 5-day "Western Caribbean" itinerary, priced from US$ 335 pp with double occupancy

Last Look: Remembering Carnival Sensation [PHOTOS]

Carnival Cruise Line announced in early 2022 that it would bid farewell to Carnival Sensation, the third in the line’s highly successful Fantasy class, which has retired after nearly 30 years of service to the company.

Saying Farewell to Carnival Sensation

Over the past three decades, millions of guests have sailed aboard Carnival Sensation, enjoying her one-of-a-kind ambiance created by some of the most talked-about interiors in cruising.

Carnival Sensation was originally scheduled to resume service from Mobile, Alabama in March. However, those plans were scrapped when the company announced Carnival Ecstasy would replace Carnival Sensation  on that route. Eventually, both ships are leaving the Carnival fleet.

Carnival Sensation essentially has not hosted guests for the better part of two years, with its last official cruise for Carnival operating in March 2020 before the cruise industry paused operations for 16 months.

In February 2022, the vessel was sold to a scrapyard in Turkey for an estimated $11 million dollars, and the following month, it met its fate on the beaches of the breaking yard.

Playfully referred to as the “purple ship” by guests and crew for the prevalence of the color in the atrium and other public spaces, Carnival Sensation will be remembered for her versatility, operating a variety of short and longer length cruise durations and itineraries from numerous homeports across the U.S., including Miami, Port Canaveral, Mobile, New Orleans, and Tampa.

But what Carnival Sensation will be remembered for is serving as one of the most creative examples of Joe Farcus’ “entertainment architecture” that paved the way for even more over-the-top public rooms in his future ship designs.

Here’s an overview of what made Carnival Sensation so special and memorable.

Carnival Sensation: Third Time’s a Charm for Fantasy-Class

Carnival Sensation debuted in 1993 as the third in a series of 70,000-ton vessels, joining the Carnival Fantasy and Carnival Ecstasy and continuing the company’s shipbuilding boom with six new ships introduced over a period of just eight years.

Following the introduction of Carnival Sensation, the pace for Carnival’s newbuilds program would accelerate even further with an astonishing 21 ships launched between 1994 and 2012.

Carnival Sensation was one of the most popular of the Fantasy-class as Joe Farcus’ creativity was on full display with an array of imaginative public rooms, including a seven-deck-high neon-splashed atrium that would make even Las Vegas blush.

carnival sensation atrium

The most “Farcus”-ian room on Carnival Sensation is the Touch of Class, a piano bar on Atlantic Deck distinguished by two oversized cupped hands flanking the doors that provided a memorable entrance.

The motif is carried out with handprints adorning the bulkheads and even more oversized hands throughout the room, making this venue easily one of his most talked-about and memorable designs. Love it or hate it, you knew you were on a Carnival ship.

There was also the Michelangelo Lounge, a live music venue that served as a tribute to the artist with Roman statues and other Renaissance design elements, the Mirage casino bar with — yes — purple walls and brightly-lit chandeliers similar to those along the promenade, and the stately Oak Room offering a décor of understated elegance that provided a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of other spaces on board.

carnival sensation Michelangelo lounge

Of course, Carnival Sensation housed the signature amenities that made her sister ships Carnival Fantasy and Carnival Ecstasy so popular – acres of open deck space for sunning and relaxing, multiple swimming options, a 114-foot-long spiral water slide, a luxurious Nautica Spa, a multi-level showroom, and an easily manageable layout that made getting around the ship a breeze.

Eventually, five additional Fantasy-class ships would enter service – Carnival Fascination (1994), Carnival Imagination (1995), Carnival Inspiration (1996), and Carnival Elation and Carnival Paradise (1998) – bringing the total to eight and creating the largest number of ships introduced from a single platform.

Fun Facts about Carnival Sensation

  • The company enlisted a quartet of distinguished female Carnival executives – Vicki Freed, Cherie Weinstein, Roberta Jacoby, and Gerry Donnelly – to serve as co-godmothers for the ship’s naming.
  • Roughly five feet of Carnival Sensation’s funnel mast – located at the uppermost part of the ship – was removed to allow the vessel to go under Sunshine Skyway bridge when she began service from Tampa in 1998, making headlines nationwide.
  • Carnival Sensation was one of three Carnival Cruise Line ships to be charted by FEMA to house evacuees and first responders following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
  • Carnival Sensation was the second Carnival Cruise Line ship to visit Cuba, following a successful program that debuted on Carnival Paradise. Carnival Sensation was, in fact, en route to Havana when Cuba sailings were halted in 2019 and a new itinerary had to be created within hours.
  • Carnival Sensation was one of the most popular ships in Port Canaveral, with longtime guests Bernard and Janice Caffery of Lakeland, Florida recognized for sailing on the ship 100+ times!

Carnival Sensation’s Most Recent Refurb Projects

In 2009, Carnival Sensation underwent an extensive 35-day dry dock that added the WaterWorks aqua park, a Serenity adults-only retreat, and a redesigned resort-style pool area, part of the line’s multi-million-dollar Evolutions of Fun refurbishment program. Ninety-eight balconies were added to existing staterooms, as well.

carnival sensation serenity retreat

In 2017, Carnival Sensation underwent a two-week dry dock in Freeport that added the full Fun Ship 2.0 spaces, including Guy’s Burger Joint , BlueIguana Cantina, the poolside RedFrog Rum Bar and BlueIguana Tequila Bar, Alchemy Bar, Cherry on Top sweets shop, and the Camp Ocean children’s play area.

In January 2020, just a mere two months before the cruise industry paused operations, Carnival Sensation underwent a two-week dry dock, mainly for cosmetic enhancements and routine maintenance with Bonsai Sushi Express and a refurbished shopping area added as well.

Unfortunately, the dry dock was all for naught. Two months later, the Carnival Sensation joined other ships in the fleet and ceased operations, never returning to guest service again.

Other Fantasy-class Cruise Ships:

An inglorious finish.

carnival sensation mobile alabama

Saying goodbye to a nearly 30-year member of the Carnival Cruise Line fleet is never easy, but the farewell to Carnival Sensation was particularly emotional as the ship was never able to host guests again after the cruise industry paused operations during the pandemic.

As the Fantasy class is seemingly disappearing, ship by ship, it’s important to remember pioneering ships such as Carnival Sensation that made today’s cruise industry possible.

These ships, paltry by today’s standard in terms of size and amenities, are what laid the groundwork for the future of cruising, paving the way for Mardi Gras and other mega-ships that have captured guests’ fancy and are ushering in a new style of seagoing vacations.

So let’s raise a glass and toast Carnival Sensation – and all the retired or other soon-to-be-retired ships – and remember all of the memories they helped create for literally millions of guests over the years.

Rest assured, there will never be another ship like Carnival Sensation, and that’s for sure!

Port of Baltimore suspends ship traffic after bridge collapse: What it means for travel

Travel is being impacted by Tuesday’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse along Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Drivers were immediately directed to take alternate routes through the city, following the early morning incident. What’s less clear is what the bridge collapse may mean for upcoming cruises in and out of Baltimore.

“Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice,” the Port of Baltimore posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., whose district includes the bridge and the port, called the collapse an “unthinkable horror” and said he had spoken with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the White House.

“They are responding with all of the assets at their disposal,” he said in a statement. “Our prayers right now are for the missing individuals and victims of this tragedy. We thank God for the effective service of our first responders.”

Here’s what we know.

Which cruises go to Baltimore?

Several major cruise lines serve Baltimore. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” CLIA spokesperson Anne Madison said in an emailed statement. “We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind—to save lives. We are closely following this situation.”

Carnival’s website shows Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend also have sailings into or out of Baltimore set for April.

Carnival Legend will temporarily move operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

The ship's current cruise, which left for a planned round-trip sailing from Baltimore on March 24, will end in Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will then receive free bus rides to Baltimore. The vessel's next cruise will sail round-trip from Norfolk later that day.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Carnival president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride. Carnival's parent company, Carnival Corp., said the temporary change in homeport is estimated to have an impact of up to $10 million on adjusted EBITDA and adjusted net income this year, according to a news release .

Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, which left from Baltimore on March 23 , will return to Norfolk instead on April 4. "Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements," a spokesperson said in an email.

The ship's April 4 and 12 cruises will leave from Norfolk, too. "Our guests booked to sail with us will receive compensation due to the necessary adjustments made to their vacations," the spokesperson added. "After returning from the April 12 cruise, Vision will head to the Bahamas for its previously scheduled maintenance."

Was your cruise itinerary changed?: What to do next

American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at the present time our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September on Norwegian Sky . The line will stay in contact with the port and share any changes with passengers and travel partners, according to a spokesperson.

"In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event," they said in an email.

Alternate routes for the Baltimore bridge

Most drivers can take Interstate 95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or Interstate 895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.

New York City is hundreds of miles from the total solar eclipse’s zone of totality , but there are plenty of opportunities to view the partial event in the Big Apple — and snag some

The eclipse will be 91% viewable from the five boroughs — meaning New Yorkers can watch the moon pass in front of the sun until only a sliver of the star is visible at 3:25 p.m.

The edge of the moon will first pass in front of the sun at 2:10 p.m., and the event will conclude at 4:36 p.m. in the city.

“It will get dimmer but … you’re not going to see the stars come out or anything like that in the city,” Fox Weather meteorologist Dax Clark advised .

Manhattan skyscrapers with observatories like Top of The Rock, One World Observatory, the EDGE and the Empire State Building are all holding viewing parties Monday afternoon.

Tickets range from $44 to $94 for the high-flying views, which include protective glasses, and in some cases, a glass of champagne.

ESB

Manhattanites who would prefer to see the show in the sky closer to Earth are invited to a free viewing party at Greenly Plaza on Broadway between West 32nd and 33rd Streets, where the 34th Street Partnership will provide free eclipse glasses, themed crafts, black-and-white cookies and live music.

In the outer boroughs, New Yorkers can watch the out-of-this-world event for free at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, or the New York Hall of Science in Queens, where a $10 ticket lets patrons enjoy music, food and “hands-on NASA activities” from 1 to 5 p.m.

The celestial event will also line up perfectly with the Yankees game against the Seattle Mariners, which begins at 2:05 p.m. The first 15,000 fans at Yankee Stadium will receive a commemorative T-shirt to mark the occasion.

A ceremonial first pitch will be tossed by Cynthia Simmons, deputy director of Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, according to the team .

On Staten Island, a free watch party will be thrown at SIUH Community Park in St. George, featuring music, crafts and games.

Classic Harbor Line Cruises is setting sail for an eclipse-viewing expedition in New York Harbor.

For $96 , customers will enjoy a complimentary drink and a pair of protective glasses.

Of course, that eyewear is a must for anyone looking to stare at the sky.

Free glasses are available at any public library in New York City, as well as at Warby Parker locations and Moynihan Train Hall.

The next time a solar eclipse will be visible in New York City will be in 2079, when the boroughs will be in complete totality.

City and cruise lines agree to conceptual cruise visitor limits in Juneau

a cruise ship

The City and Borough of Juneau has negotiated a conceptual agreement with cruise lines that could limit the number of daily passengers that come off their ships and into Juneau.

At an Assembly meeting Monday night, City Tourism Manager Alix Pierce said the agreement is still far from final. If approved, the limits would go into effect during the 2026 season.

“We do not have a preliminary agreement on an MOA with specific numbers yet but we have agreed to the concept of a daily limit MOA, which is an important step in the right direction,” she said.

Last season, a  record 1.6 million cruise ship passengers  visited Juneau. Next Tuesday, the arrival of the Norwegian Bliss will mark the start of the 2024 season.

This year will be Juneau’s first with  a limit of five large ships  per day, but the overall number of passengers is expected to  remain about the same .

Pierce said when the city and cruise lines met last week to negotiate the future limits, they did not settle on a specific number for the daily limit. But, she said it would likely be a decrease from the status quo and would make Saturdays the least trafficked day of the week.

“They knew this conversation was coming, they knew this was the purpose of the meeting and we had asked them to come ready to discuss daily limits and the issues and challenges around that,” she said.

She said the city is also in discussion with cruise lines about addressing the challenges with hot berthing – when one ship leaves and another takes its place later that day – and downtown congestion.

This isn’t the first attempt to limit the number of cruise ship passengers visiting Southeast communities. Last summer, city officials in Sitka  denied a citizen’s petition  to put a visitor cap on the ballot. And in 2021, Juneau resident Karla Hart  proposed a ballot initiative  to set a ship size limit, no-ship days and no-ship hours. That initiative  didn’t get enough signatures  to go to voters.

Phil Foden celebrates the second of his three goals against Aston Villa

Phil Foden’s sublime hat-trick helps Manchester City cruise past Aston Villa

All Manchester City can do is what they did on Wednesday night against Aston Villa: beat the next opponent and hope that Liverpool – and Arsenal – slip up in the remaining games of this invigorating championship race.

This scenario is due to the four dropped points in their recent meetings with their title rivals. And, in Unai Emery’s Champions League hopefuls, City took on and defeated the team directly below them, finally recording a victory over a top-five side.

They did so without Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne who were unused substitutes, and via Phil Foden’s scintillating hat-trick, which took his tally to 21 of a career‑best season and decorated City’s winvictory.

The 23-year-old said: “Obviously I’m just loving my football at the moment. I’m just playing with a smile on my face and trying to help the team because I know I’m capable of scoring goals and I know today I showed that, so I’m delighted.”

Loss, draw, win read Villa’s record in their previous three league outings; a total of four points to City’s five in the same span. Emiliano Martínez was named in the visitor’s XI but was taken ill so Robin Olsen replaced the No 1 for a second league appearance this season. Emery’s side were missing their 22-goal striker, Ollie Watkins, too, due to a hamstring problem. So into this void stepped Jhon Durán for only a second league start, and he would score.

First, though, Julián Álvarez, Haaland’s stand-in, latched on to a Jack Grealish ball but hit the side-netting. Jérémy Doku, operating on the opposite right flank to the former Villa captain, won a free-kick which Foden launched and Olsen plucked from the air.

This is a trademark of Pep Guardiola’s City: the use of wings to prosper. Grealish was being booed by his former fans but cared not a fig as he bamboozled Villa’s right side and then came Rodri’s opener – from Doku’s flank.

Foden passed to Manuel Akanji who returned possession and now Foden illustrated why he resembles De Bruyne. His ball to Doku was cunning and, when the Belgian zipped in a cross, Rodri’s finish resembled one of his pinpoint passes, allowing Olsen zero chance.

Manchester City’s Rodri smashes the ball past the Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen to open the scoring

The Spain midfielder – “he is the best in the world in his position,” Guardiola said – pumped the air and encouraged the home faithful to raise the noise. But soon they were quietened. Durán’s equaliser was the textbook mode of breaching City. One moment Álvarez attacked in Villa’s area, the next they broke, the Colombian swapped passes with Morgan Rogers and steered a shot, from an angle on the left, into Stefan Ortega’s far corner.

City’s riposte featured a Grealish volley that skidded wide and a phase in which they lost the plot. Grealish was booked, which followed a Guardiola tantrum at Robert Jones, the fourth official, when Lucas Digne escaped sanction for a challenge on Doku.

Then City were ahead again. Douglas Luiz yanked down Foden on the edge of the area and the England international threaded the free-kick through a gap in Villa’s wall to beat Olsen to his right. Cut to a delighted Guardiola and an Emery who was furious, probably at Nicolò Zaniolo for being the leak in the barrier.

Phil Foden’s free-kick finds a gap between Nicolò Zaniolo and Ezri Konsa to put Manchester City 2-1 ahead

In a contest far more open than City’s goalless affair with Arsenal , the hosts required a cushion to feel comfortable. Shots from Doku and Bernardo Silva threatened to provide this as they rolled the ball around. But, again, they were nearly sucker-punched, as Villa mugged them, roved downfield, and saw Douglas Luiz’s effort inside the area repelled by Ortega.

Emery’s tactic was a carbon copy of Mikel Arteta’s: a low block in defence and a wait to raid their hosts. Zaniolo was the latest to try the ploy, his attempt inside City’s box requiring Rúben Dias to put his body on the line to stymie it.

But there was nothing Villa could do about a Foden second created by brilliant Rodri footwork that removed three players, before the regal midfielder shifted the ball laterally to Foden whose strike was a guided missile Olsen could only stare at.

Foden’s third was a zinger as he regained the ball and, from the Villa D, rifled into the roof of Olsen’s net. It sent him, Guardiola and all City enthusiasts into ecstasy. It also meant Rodri and Silva could enjoy a breather, as Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes entered for the closing minutes.

It meant, too, a complete evening off for Haaland and De Bruyne and, with next week’s trip to Real Madrid coming after Crystal Palace on Saturday, this may prove priceless. When Foden was replaced the cheer he received was loud – and deserved.

As Rodri said: “With this player he grows every single year. He can score whatever he wants, arriving in the box, he has a special quality. Three today and so happy for him.”
