Doha City Tour With Discover Qatar: An Honest Review

Beautiful architecture at Katara cultural village

Would you like to learn more about the Doha City Tour with Discover Qatar? Then you have come to the right place!

If you travel east, chances are that you will use the Doha airport for your connecting flight. You might have a long layover in Doha , with plenty of time to kill before hopping on your next flight.

What better way to spend that time than by getting out of the airport to explore a new city that you wouldn’t visit otherwise?

Discover Qatar offers a 3-hour long city tour of Doha which will take you to the city’s main attractions. I took this tour to check out if it was worth it and the answer is YES !

Although Doha might not be a city that attracts many tourists, it does have some beautiful sights. I really enjoyed gazing at the skyscrapers one moment and visiting the traditional souqs the next.

You will find my experience, along with some useful information in case you want to do the Doha Transit Tour in this post.

Doha city tour with Discover Qatar

The places you will see.

After booking the tour and leaving the airport, I boarded the air-conditioned bus with a small group of people who had booked the same tour.

We met our guide, who told us about the country and explained we’d make four stops. These were the following:

The harbour

Doha city tour: the skyline

After about 15 minutes on the bus, we made our first stop at the Doha harbour, which is right next to the Museum of Islamic Art.

You won’t be able to really check this museum out though, as the bus only makes a 10-minute stop in order for you to snap some pictures of the panoramic skyline , which is the harbour’s highlight.

Katara Cultural Village

Kantara village

My favourite stop was the next one: Katara Cultural Village, which aims to promote cultural awareness in Qatar.

Although everything was closed due to Ramadan, the stunning Arabic-inspired architecture literally made my jaw drop. From its amphitheatre to the beautiful Katara Masjid mosque , the cultural village is definitely worth a visit!

We had some time to walk around and take some pictures here, but I wished we could have stayed a little longer. It’s a very beautiful and photogenic place that I would love to visit again one day.

Doha city tour: The Pearl

Stop number three was The Pearl: an artificial island situated off the coast of Doha. It’s full of yachts and luxurious apartments, restaurants and hotels.

The name “The Pearl” was chosen because it was built on one of Qatar’s previous pearl diving sites. Before the oil boom, the country was one of the main pearl traders in Asia .

We walked around The Pearl for about 20 minutes, which was just enough for me. Then, we hopped on the bus to drive to our final stop.

Souq Waqif

Our last stop was the Soup Waqif, where we had an hour to explore the market. Unlike the souqs I have visited in North Africa, the vendors didn’t aggressively try to get you into their shops and sell you stuff, which was a very nice, refreshing experience.

They sell all kinds of things at Souq Waqif, from souvenirs to clothes, spices and even small animals.

The souq dates back at least a hundred years but it was renovated in 2006 after most of it was destroyed by a fire a few years before.

Here, we had the choice to either take the bus back to the airport or stay in the city and return by ourselves later. I didn’t have that much time left before catching my flight so this is when the Doha city tour stopped for me.

How to book Discover Qatar’s city tour of Doha

You can book the tour in advance on the Discover Qatar website or go to their counter at the Doha airport.

Follow the A gate and take the first flat escalator (I’m not sure what those things are called in English?). You will find the desk on the left side. This is also the place where the tour leaves.

The 3-hour tour of Doha that I took cost 99 QAR but there are other tours to choose from, depending on the time you have and your budget.

I didn’t have to pay a visa fee, but it depends on your citizenship. You can check if your country belongs to the visa-free countries here .

Tips for the Qatar City Tour

  • Bring water and sunscreen.
  • Always take your valuables with you when you leave the bus.
  • Ask for your tour operator’s contact number if you’re taking the bus back after the last stop. You never know what might happen and the bus doesn’t wait in case you get delayed.

Discover Qatar City Tour: Final thoughts

All in all, I had a great time on the Discover Qatar City Tour!

It takes you to Doha’s highlights and gives you an idea of what the city is like. There were places where I would have loved to stay longer but I know this wasn’t possible due to the limited time you have on a layover.

I would recommend this tour and would do it again in a heartbeat! It’s a great way to make the most of your layover and see a little bit of Doha.

I will have an 8-hour layover in Doha next month and am considering this tour. Is there a place to store one’s carry-on bag at the airport? Or do you bring it on the tour with you?

Hi Nadia, I think there must probably be a place to store your carry-on somewhere at the airport, but I took it with me so I’m not sure. Enjoy Doha!

' src=

Hi… I have a long layover in Doha. Want to leave the airport. I have some questions about you leaving the airport.

Did you have to get recovid tested? Do you need a Qatar SIM card or does the airport Wi-Fi have a strong enough connection for the health app?

Hi Mark, I did this before Covid, so I don’t know about the test. The wifi at the airport was good though!

' src=

Hi Laura, would just like to ask if the Pokefi 5g lte will work on an iPhone 8 and a laptop or does it only work on the latest devices?

Hi Ami, I think it would work because you just need to connect the wifi to start using it. But I would ask the Pokefi client service if you want to be sure. 😉

' src=

Hi Laura. I took the city tour from Qatar Airways 2 weeks ago while my transit in Rwanda. The tour was great but unfortunately it ended with one of the worst experiences in my life. The last station was the market and the tour operator gave us 20 minutes to go around. I lost my way back and I delayed 8 minutes to reach the meeting point. After waiting for 15 minutes, I realized that they left without me with my bag in the bus and without any contact to communicate. All my things (passport, money, credit cards, laptop) were in the bus and with just 8 minutes delay they left without me, in the middle of nowhere. After 1 hour of stress trying to find someone to talk, to find my bag and get back to the airport, I realized that they don’t care about their customers safety and there are no ways to be justified. Moreover, the taxi driver instead of 7 usd, he charged me 20 usd to take me back to the airport. I was charged 100 usd for the calls to find my bag and my way back to the airport.

Hi Nicos, I’m so sorry for what has happened to you, I can imagine that must have been a horrible experience! 🙁 It’s true that there should be a way to contact them in case something like this happens. I know it’s not much, and it certainly doesn’t make anything better, but I’ve added some tips at the end of this post that will hopefully prevent things like this from happening again.

' src=

Hi Nicola, did you have to get COVID tested or download any app in order to travel on the transit tour?

' src=

Hi Laura, thank you for sharing your experience and great information. I have a 12 hour layover at night in DOHA, do I need a transit to do the Discover Doha tour?

Hi Mari, I’m happy it’s helpful! 🙂 I’m not sure I understand what you mean with a transit. If you have a 12-hour layover, you are in transit, so it should be fine (I hope this helps). Also, it depends on the tours, but I see that you’re arriving at night, and for this one, the last one leaves at 9:30 pm. Hope your flight will be there in time!

' src=

after reading your review i also want to book this tour. My flight will arrive at 14:40. How long does it take to get to the Discover Qatar desk? Do i have to go through some security checks first? Do you think, taking flight delays into consideration, i can catch the tour starting from 16:00?

Please let me know – Thank you in advance

Sorry, i meant the tour starting from 18:00 because nowadays they want you to show up 2h prior

Hi Thomas, I didn’t have to go through any checkpoints when I landed in Doha and got to the Discover Qatar desk pretty fast! So I think you will definitely have enough time to catch that tour. Enjoy! 🙂

' src=

I’ve been staying in Doha for sometime for now. I guess you need at least one full day to view major sights of Doha city,

Doha Transit Tour by Discover Qatar Review (2024)

After landing in Doha aboard our Qatar Airways A350 Q-Suites flight , we knew that our next flight wouldn’t leave for another 8 hours. Our original plan was to just hang out in the new Qatar Airways lounge, because we figured we would be absolutely exhausted. However, once we landed, we were actually pretty refreshed (#lieflatseat). We had done some research beforehand in case this happened, and we had discovered the Discover Qatar Doha Transit Tour .

This is a 3 hour tour that hits the highlights of what Doha is like. You’ll stop at 3 culturally significant places within Doha: the Museum of Islamic Art, the Katara Cultural Village, and the Souq Waqif (the central market).

discover doha tour review

What’s even better is that this is in conjunction with Qatar Airways, so they are aware that people are actually going to be taking this tour. I don’t know if they’ll automatically rebook you if there’s an issue getting back to your gate, but I would think your odds are better if that happens.

Table of Contents

Requirements, Booking, & Cost for the Doha Transit Tour

For our tour, you must have a layover of 6 hours. This is the requirement to make sure that you can go through immigration in both directions. (You do get your passport stamped…which is really cool!) On a related note, you must be able to have legal entry into Qatar as a tourist, even though it is only for a short time.

You can book online before you get there, but I would caution against this for two reasons. First, you don’t know if your flight will be delayed, causing you to miss your check-in time. Second, there are no cost savings by booking in advance – it costs the same either way.

As of publication, the cost of these tours are 115 QAR (or about $32 US dollars) per person. I paid with my Capital One Venture X so that I would not pay any foreign transaction fees.

Note that we took this tour at night, but the experience should be the same if you take the tour during the day.

Meeting Place and Immigration

As with many things in the Doha airport, the Discover Qatar booth for the Doha Transit Tour can be difficult to find. The best way to visualize where to go is to begin by looking directly at the front of the famous bear. Turn around 180 degrees and walk forward. You’ll pass the information desk and walk towards a little food court. Right before you get to the food court, you’ll see a booth on your right.

discover doha tour review

This is where you both buy your ticket and is where you meet. We got there about 15 minutes before the meeting time, and, after a long flight, went and got a Coke and a small snack.

You have to buy your ticket at least 2 hours in advance of your official tour start time. Why? If you are an economy passenger, going through immigration takes quite a bit of time.

Once the whole group is there, they walk you through a series of escalators and elevators to reach immigration.

As we had flown business class on Q-Suites , we had access to a special first and business class immigration. It seems like it was much less busy. We were through immigration and a security check in about 10 minutes. I did not take pictures during this process.

From there, we were told to meet at the Discover Qatar desk at the stated time after making our way through immigration. We had about an hour to kill, so we hung out and had a real snack in the Qatar Airways arrivals lounge. We met a really cool couple from the Midwest who were on their way to Bali, so we enjoyed a light meal alongside them and got to know them. Hello if you are reading!

Doha Transit Tour Transportation & Luggage Logistics

After meeting at the Discover Qatar desk, we were lead to our transportation through Doha. On this particular excursion, we rode in a 46-passenger bus.

discover doha tour review

You may be familiar with something like a Greyhound or Flix bus. This was basically a smaller nicer version of this. There was a set of stairs in the front and a set of stairs in the middle of the bus. Bottled water was available as a part of your ticket, and you could pick it up at any time during the tour. Our tour guide (a lovely Turkish woman) sat at the front, and we sat about 3/4 of the way back.

discover doha tour review

Now, one thing I did want to mention: luggage. You likely have at least a backpack and maybe a small cabin-sized rolling suitcase. Two things to note. First, in terms of your rolling suitcase, you put it under the bus, where it is safely locked for the duration of your trip. My wife and I left it in the business class lounge in their storage lockers. However, I’m 99% sure that we actually weren’t supposed to do that. If you do that, make sure to get a key from the front desk before trying to go into the locker room and open a locker. It was quite confusing how to put our luggage in the lockers.

Second, if you have a backpack or similar bag, you can absolutely leave your backpack on the bus, and it is locked the entire time you are not on there. The driver is with the bus the whole time as well. I took my small Fjällräven hipbag with my wallet and phone. However, that’s all I took when we got off the bus.

The Doha Transit Tour

We left on time and began making our way around the city. During the whole trip, the tour guide went over the fundamentals of the demographics of Qatar, as well as a brief history. I really appreciated that much of it was contextualized in the formation of the modern Qatari state. The tour guide spoke completely in English, and she was quite easy to understand throughout the entirety of the tour.

On the bus, to be honest, I couldn’t really hear, as we were close to the engine. If you’re interested in what the tour guide is saying, sit up closer to the front of the bus.

Museum of Islamic Art

Our first stop was at the Museum of Islamic Art . Others have described this museum as the Louvre for Islamic art, and it is quite beautiful.

discover doha tour review

Note that you don’t actually get to go into the museum, but, rather, spend about 10 minutes exploring the area. We got lots of great pictures of the walkway up to the museum, and you have a great view of the Doha skyline. After our long flight, it felt great to get our, walk around, and be able to say, “I’m here. I’m traveling for my vacation!”

Katara Cultural Village

After 10 minutes, you get back on the bus and drive about 15 minutes to the Katara Cultural Village. Once you get there, you begin the true walking tour portion of the overall experience.

discover doha tour review

This is really the most informational section of the tour, as you get to see several cultural sites associated with Doha and the Qatari state. The most interesting to me was the discussion outside of the Katara Mosque, where we learned about how the Islamic faith was incorporated into the state of Qatar.

discover doha tour review

We also visited the Katara Multi-Purpose Hall, which is built to resemble the Colosseum of Rome. We unfortunately were not able to go inside, as there was some ceremony with the 2024 Asian Cup, which was hosted in Qatar.

discover doha tour review

I really enjoyed this stop, as I was able to ask the tour guide a ton of questions about the cultural and economic life in Qatar. It was really interesting to hear her experiences and perspectives.

There was also a bathroom break at this point right outside the mosque. I took this opportunity to take my shoes off and check out the inside of the mosque. Out of respect for those worshipping there, I stood in the back and did not take any pictures of the inside.

Finally, we made our way to the Souq Waqif, which is the central market within Doha. Here, you have about an hour or so to walk around, walk into shops, get a coffee, etc. While this market is styled after a centuries-old market that had been there, it was actually only about 20 years old or so. The original had burned down in a fire, and some wealthy donor gave to have it rebuilt in the traditional style.

discover doha tour review

You’ll find a HUGE variety of shops and restaurants. In one area, they even have falcons for sale! I was very tempted to get a tea set, but, given that I really have no need for it, I decided against it.

discover doha tour review

What I did find interesting was that there was also a protest concerning Palestine there. We didn’t really pay too much attention to it, but it did seem like this was a meeting place for protests of some sorts. Additionally, there was a news show filming there as well. I believe it was with Al Jazeera, but I’m not 100% sure.

We spent most of our time walking around looking at various shops, which was really fun. We did get some Turkish ice cream, which also included a little “show” where they actually trick giving you the ice cream with their long ice cream scoop. It was a ton of fun!

discover doha tour review

One thing that I was surprised about was how chilly it got. I was wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and my favorite pair of sneakers . However, I wish I had brought my jacket with me. It wasn’t freezing, but it was cold enough to want a light jacket. I didn’t realize it got cold enough for a jacket in Doha in February, and it would have been nice at this point in the tour.

Back to the Airport and Security

Once we had finished up at the central market, we headed back to the airport. To be honest, everyone was quite tired, which is likely due to a combination of the previous long flights and the tour itself.

When we got back to the airport, we were directed to first and business class security. The security lines were non-existent (as Doha is more of a transit airport more than anything). We were on our way back to the lounge in The Orchard for a shower and dinner. The total time of the Doha Transit Tour was indeed 3 hours long, and we had about 2.5 hours left until our flight to Male!

discover doha tour review

One brief note here: I normally tip very little outside of the US. However, I always try to tip tour guides. I tried to tip our tour guide $40. She politely declined it, even when I insisted. So take that for what it is.

During our layover in Doha, we partook in the Discover Qatar Doha Transit Tour . It was a great way to kill some time during a long layover. It also got both of us excited to visit the Middle Eastern countries in the future. I highly recommend taking the Doha Transit Tour to get a brief taste of what Doha & Qatar has to offer!

Hamad International Airport in Qatar’s capital Doha has its charms, but the thought of wandering aimlessly for the best part of a day, waiting for a Qatar Airways connection back to Australia, was a bit much to bear.

But at a counter near Gate A4, passengers with sufficient transit time can get aboard a variety of tours, at a range of prices, from all-day trips taking in sights such as Qatar’s eerie Inland Sea deep in the desert with views across to Saudi Arabia, to shorter options.

I went for the basic, popular, three-hour Doha city tour, priced at 75 Qatari riyals, or about $30. Organisers take care of transit passport issues – Australians get a visa on arrival – then herd assembled guests out to a comfortable 46-seat tourist coach to soak up the sights of Doha. (It may have been the overnight flight from London but a tune was stuck in my head the entire tour, “Doha, dear, a female deer …”)

BEST THINGS TO DO IN THE MIDDLE EAST THE BEST OF DUBAI

THE BEST OF ABU DHABI

First stop is at the waterfront near what the guide referred to as a giant pearl, honouring the harbour’s history of pearl diving. The oyster with pearl sculpture was large but not a jot on Australia’s “big” things, but the view across the harbour to the city was sensational.

Fishing dhows bob in the water and you look across the large serene bay to see what fabulous oil and gas wealth can do in a desert town. Gleaming skyscrapers reach to the clouds, each seemingly trying to outdo each other with futuristic design. It’s like an architect’s playground. There are also views of the waterfront Museum of Islamic Art .

The Islamic Museum of Art is on the far side of the main bay.

The drive continues around the waterfront promenade, the Corniche, with its parks and playgrounds, as our English-speaking Asian guide melodiously related the history of the city and how everyone loves the ruling emir – they must, his portrait is everywhere, even on the sides of large buildings. It is a graphic example of the cultural chasm between this tiny, super-rich Middle East emirate and Australia. Can you imagine developers putting 50m-high murals of Scott Morrison on new buildings? And if you are travelling with a partner, don’t kiss or hold hands in public.

Another stop is another pearl, this time The Pearl , a luxurious island development centred on a marina. Again, the obvious signs of wealth are a bit to take in, from the rows of large prestige boats in the marina to the rows of large prestige boutiques spruiking the world’s top fashion labels.

A third stop is the Katara Cultural Village , described as “a cultural beacon and the largest multidimensional cultural project that hosts local, regional and international festivals, workshops and exhibitions”. The waterfront site hosts anything from dhow festivals to falconry events. For the casual visitor, the most interesting of its many unusual buildings are two towers that look like they are built of mud with sticks sticking out. Turns out these are Pigeon Towers, designed to collect pigeon droppings which is used as a fertiliser for farming. The design dates back thousands of years and these towers, the most famous of their type in Qatar, provide housing for thousands of pigeons. It is all quite interesting but more a place to visit on a quick tour around town, rather than a longer stay, unless going for a specific event.

The Pigeon Towers hark back to older times.

Much more interesting was the final stop, Souq Waqif . This bewildering market maze of alleyways, arcades, traditional stalls and re-created stalls captures the authentic heritage of the city in a way cultural villages and towering skyscrapers cannot. Just about anything and everything is for sale here, from suits of armour to luggage to huge round metal trays (not sure for what) to fabrics. Buckets of strange foods and spices add colour and aroma, though I’d be hard-pressed to name many; it’s an opportunity for an education chatting with vendors who seem to have plenty of time on their hands. Be warned though. Stumbling through this vibrant labyrinth I suddenly came across the bird market where dozens of squawking birds are crammed into cages far too small for comfort. There were also cages of tortoises, again crammed into small cages, obviously feeling the desert heat with little water. If you are an animal lover it can be a bit disturbing.

Beware the bird market in Souq Waqif.

Doha is a “dry” city, apart from international hotels and, in Ramadan, even these and the airport do not serve alcohol, so don’t bank on a cold lunchtime beer after working up a sweat exploring. After a mineral water it was back to the bus for the return trip to the airport to wander the terminal until my flight.

DOHA CITY TOUR

The tour is an easy way to see some sights of an interesting city in the nation which will host the soccer World Cup in eight stadiums 2022.

The basic city tour runs daily and leaves throughout the day from 8am, minimum transit time of six hours between arrival and departure flight schedule is required.

Guests can book in advance over the internet or simply head to the Discover Qatar Transit Tours desk located at concourse A, towards Gate A4.

On the coast of the Black Sea sits an eerie ghost town full of Disney-inspired mansions that were never finished.

Some travellers, facing a second day of disruption, have been stranded in airport terminals, with only limited duty-free shops for supplies.

A fierce storm has lashed Dubai, with “exceptional weather” conditions sparking travel chaos as planes to try navigate what now looks like a marina.

The Pearl. Stop number three was The Pearl: an artificial island situated off the coast of Doha. It's full of yachts and luxurious apartments, restaurants and hotels. The name "The Pearl" was chosen because it was built on one of Qatar's previous pearl diving sites. Before the oil boom, the country was one of the main pearl traders in Asia.

  3. Good way to spend time in Doha if you're in transit

We had a layover in Doha and wanted to take a tour. We opted for the 3-hour tour. Even though we didn't have a prior reservation, we were fortunate to be able to join as someone had canceled (tip: make a reservation in advance!). The 3-hour tour takes you to 3 points in Doha: The Corniche, where you stop in front of the Museum of Islamic Arts.
