Disney Cruise Line - Mainstage Dancer Audition (NYC - March 6, 2024) Open Call

HEIHEI!!! The first theatrical adaptation of MOANA coming to DISNEY CRUISE LINE!! Multi-award winning Disney Cruise Line once again teams with industry leaders to create a theatrical production like no other, based on Walt Disney Animated Studios’ MOANA. Broadway veteran Connor Gallagher teams with the creative artistic talents of Peter Rockford Espiritu and Aaron Sal? to bring DISNEY THE TALE OF MOANA to the Walt Disney Theatre aboard the new DISNEY TREASURE.

Be a part of this historic inaugural cast. We will contract 24 actors, singers, and dancers to portray roles in each of our musical theatre productions. Creating a theatrical repertory company at sea including DISNEY BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

Disney Cruise Line® is conducting auditions for Mainstage Dancer needs for our newest ship The Disney Treasure.  Walt Disney Theatre productions have an intentionally inclusive BIPOC casting approach. 

Rehearsal begins early July 2024 in Toronto, Canada, along with a 6-8 months on board. Contract includes competitive pay, travel, room and board – guest sailing privileges, significant contract completion bonus and some guest dining privileges.

Highly skilled and trained dancers for Male and Female identifying roles, all ethnicities. Some roles may require tumbling and tap. 

Candidates please come prepared to dance multiple styles.

-Female identifying dancers will be asked to dance in heels

-Male identifying dancers will be asked to dance in a flat ballet slipper/or jazz shoe. 

All candidates should wear appropriate athletic/dancewear. Candidates may be asked to change  shoes during the audition.

Disney Treasure Cruise Ship Holding Performer Auditions for 'Moana' Show and 'Coco' Restaurant

D isney Cruise Line is holding multiple open-call auditions for dancers, musicians, and vocalists to join the inaugural team of the new Disney Treasure ship.

There are 16 postings for the Disney Treasure on the Disney Auditions website . Auditions are being held in San Diego, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York City, and Aiea, Hawaii on various dates in late January and throughout February.

The dancer and vocalist positions are for the new “Disney The Tale of Moana” stage show and the returning “Beauty and the Beast” show. Disney Cruise Line is seeking vocalists to portray Moana, Maui, Gramma Tala, Sina, Tui, Tamatoa, and Matai Vasa. They will contract 24 actors, singers, and dancers. Rehearsals will begin in early July 2024 in Toronto and will continue for 6-8 months onboard the ship.

The musician audition postings are for various positions. Disney Cruise Line is looking for three Mariachi-style musicians to perform live in the Plaza de Coco restaurant .

As diners savor their meals and mingle with characters from the movie, our musicians will serenade them with Mexican Folkloric tunes and soul-stirring melodies from the film. We are currently sourcing for pre-formed trios and are open to reviewing individual submissions. Trio must contain Guitarrón, Guitar, and either a Requinto or Violin.

Disney Cruise Line is also seeking three musicians to play as both a trio and individually in various roles including “part of the boisterous ’80s rock party” and “while providing a retro flair on Disney classics in an adult lounge.”

There are also two pianist positions open who must have a strong familiarization with Disney songs.

Life as a Disney Princess: What to Expect When You Audition for Disney Cruise Line

Have you ever dreamed of being a Disney princess? I have. And for a few years, that dream came true. And believe me, it was magical.

In my final months studying musical theatre at university, a teacher asked me what goals I had in my five-year plan. Most of it was quite generic; get a job, work in theatre etc. The only place I found specificity was in a hope I had been carrying with me since I was a little girl.

I wanted to work for Disney.

I didn’t quite understand my options past that. There are so many parks, ships, and shows all over the world, it’s hard to know where you fit, especially at the start of your career.

The Audition

Two months before my graduation in 2016, Disney Cruise Line held auditions in Toronto. I had auditioned for the company before, but always for roles that were not quite right for me. This time, the casting breakdown was specifically for the Dream and the Fantasy, their two newest ships at the time. They were searching for mainstage singers who could play multiple roles within the repertoire. I was told to bring 16 bars (about 30 seconds of a song) with sheet music that showed my range and storytelling ability (have a look at our blog “ Top 10 Disney Musical Audition Songs for Men/Women ” if you need ideas, but don’t be scared to veer away from the Disney song book either).

Disney Cruise Line is a repertoire theatre company. This means that the cast will learn multiple shows and perform them all every week. The casting director therefore must find people who can play the exact roles pre required in a set “track” (often, but not always, the same roles will be played by the same people; ex: in every cast, the same performer will play Pocahontas, Mulan and Jasmine in three different shows). It is a massive puzzle that requires a lot of thought and time to put together, especially considering DCL audition in multiple cities all over the world.

The process itself was incredibly simple. In a nutshell, I sang my 16 bars (“ Breathe ” from In the Heights for me) and was then asked to sing a second song of my choice (“River Deep, Mountain High”). Ultimately, the casting director wanted to see me tell a story and act my way through song, all the while getting a sense of my personality. Luckily, I was asked to come back the next day (yay!) and was given specific material to learn. Two scenes and two songs for Jasmine in Aladdin .

The next morning, I showed up and worked through all the material twice. The Casting Director made it very clear that I did not need to memorize anything, but they did film my audition to send to the creative team.  We did a very short and easy dance call (I’m talking box steps and single pirouettes) and then I went home. About three weeks later, I got the email – I booked the job!

The rehearsal process takes place in Toronto, Canada (much to my demise; I wanted to travel somewhere new and exciting!) and usually lasts about two months. During this time, the cast learn the three main production shows, a welcome show and any other entertainment offerings that take place around the ship. This includes everything from Christmas carolling to Halloween haunts to themed events for their days at sea (any Stars Wars or Marvel fans here?!).

Rehearsals tend to run from 9:30 to 6, Monday to Saturday and it was one of my favourite parts of the contract. The creative team are incredibly kind, the shows are a blast and Mickey even stops by to say hi during training. How cool is that!?

Even better, Disney house you in these BEAUTIFUL apartments in the heart of Toronto just 5 minutes from the studio. If I’m being honest, they have absolutely ruined living in Toronto for me because I will never be able to beat the luxury that is that Disney rehearsal lifestyle.

The moment had come; I was about to see my floating home for the first time! As part of the Fantasy cast, we were flown from Toronto to Orlando where we would spend three days before embarking on the ship. The new hires had training during these three days, but otherwise you had all that free time to visit the parks and play! And did I mention you get in for free?! I know, the DREAM.

Embarkation morning is a mad blur. The cast have to embark at the crack of dawn, which means a swift 4am departure from the hotel. I’m still ashamed to say that I slept through my alarm that morning and ended up waking up to that phone call: “Hey Mychele, the bus is about to leave. Where are you?” Absolute chaos.

But seeing the ship for the first time? Stunning. I cannot explain how beautiful these vessels are. After all these years, they still take my breath away.

Upon embarkation, there is always a two week “crossover” period where the new cast rehearse on stage during the day, leaving the current cast to perform in the evenings. It is a rigorous process highlighted by long days and copious amounts of water and coffee. But it is also our only chance to watch the shows and see how they look from the outside. Think of it as tech week paired with moving day. Though, you are now actually moving (yes, you can absolutely feel the waves on rockier nights, but you sleep like a baby!).

The Routine

Let’s now fast forward a few months. The contract is well underway, and we have all gotten used to our new floating home. Our cabins are small but we’ve decorated them like home. Even the ports are starting to feel familiar. My first two contracts were both on the Fantasy with an eastern/western Caribbean itinerary and let’s just say, I am now very familiar with Cozumel and Grand Cayman to name a few.

One of the best things about working on a cruise ship is the luxury of travel. You get to see so many amazing places, all for free. Of course, we were still working so we couldn’t get off in every single port every day, but the ratio was pretty great. Over my three contracts with DCL (6 months on board each time), I have done some amazing things; swam with wild stingrays, ridden horseback in the Caribbean Sea, braved the steepest zip line in the world. And oh, so many beaches. It’s a lifestyle I miss every single day.

But let’s talk about the job itself a little bit more. As a performer, our responsibilities stemmed past doing the shows every night. Throughout the contract, the cast captains (vocal, dance and acting) will lead put-in rehearsals to ensure understudies feel comfortable should they need to perform live. These include slower walk-through rehearsals as well as full show runs with all technical elements and costumes. Some casts will also have the opportunity to create their own cabaret for longer, one off itinerary cruises. Beyond the stage, your average cast member will also have to take part in safety trainings, help lead assembly stations on embarkation days and do a few hours of what Disney calls greeting.

Greeting takes place around the ship and always with a Disney character. It is the greeter’s job to help manage the lines, interact with the guests, and take pictures during the meet and greet. It is an amazing way to get up close and personal with the famous Disney characters and mainstage performers are only contracted to greet up to seven hours a week.

Working on a ship is not for everyone. It is a very secluded environment in which you don’t always have control. With time, that massive floating city you first felt engulfed by starts to feel very small. A lot of people miss their friends and family at home, especially if they work a Christmas contract and worst of all, you can’t just order takeaway whenever you please (though the food on the ship is not bad; mainstage have access to the crew dining hall as well as the guest food upstairs). But I wouldn’t change it for the world.

During those few magical years, I worked three contracts on two ships, portrayed six Disney princesses amongst other characters, learnt over a dozen shows, visited over twenty-five ports, and made countless friends and memories. It is a part of my life that I will cherish forever. In fact, over five years later, my three London housemates are all ex-DCL crew. We just can’t seem to get rid of each other!

So, if you are considering auditioning for Disney Cruise Line, please just do it. I promise, it is so worth it.

What it takes to land a job as a character at one of Disney's theme parks

Hundreds of performers flock to every audition to fight for a handful of roles — and they can be rejected for something as simple as their height.

If you've ever dreamed of playing a prince or princess at the Disney theme parks around the world, you're not alone — hundreds of hopefuls flock to every audition for a shot at their dream. 

Insider spoke with seven successful and one unsuccessful Disney parks auditionees. Some last names have been withheld for privacy reasons. Insider verified their identities as well as their employment at the Disney parks. 

Although most said the experience can be positive, the competition is fierce, and the process is far from magical.

Disney did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. 

Hundreds of people show up to every Disney audition, usually without knowing what role they're up for

You don't have to be a seasoned performer to attend the open calls for character look-alikes or face characters (like the Disney princesses), character performers (including "fur" characters like Mickey Mouse), or parade performers.

Auditions are held several times a year for the Disney parks and cruise lines around the world, but it's unclear how many of these coveted jobs open up annually. The company did not return Insider's requests for comment.

These roles include everything from Cinderella to Winnie-the-Pooh, but Disney doesn't list the specific characters it's auditioning for, so auditionees rarely know which parts they're gunning for. The audition notices on the Disney Careers site are usually vague, sometimes only listing height requirements, which the company necessitates for consistency with face characters and costume safety with fur characters.

"That's why I went to so many because they would say, like, 'Oh, you could show up and be the perfect Ariel, but today we're actually only hiring for Tinker Bells,'" said Melanie, who auditioned 13 times before being cast as one of Cinderella's stepsisters at Disneyland. "But they wouldn't post any of that online, so you had no idea."

Despite the vague listings, hundreds of people show up for a chance to play one of the company's iconic characters.

Former face character Jessica Tremmel , former fur character Jenna Parkany, and three-time Disney auditionee Natalie all told Insider they estimated they've been at auditions with between 200 and 400 people. Melanie said sometimes as many as 600 to 900 people may show up for Disneyland auditions in California.

The auditions for union equity roles, which largely involve singing and/or dancing in theme-park shows and parades, are held separately with a different, more detailed process. 

Audition numbers are given on a first-come-first-served basis, according to Disney , so many people show up early to ensure they get a slot.

Helen Jane Planchet , a former Disney equity performer who played Elena of Avalor, said people would start lining up two hours early.

As a member of the American Guild of Variety Artists union, she was permitted to go first at her auditions. Otherwise, Disney's organizers opened the doors and checked people in about 30 minutes to an hour early.

Despite the crowds, Anthony Gargiula , a former Disney equity performer who played Finn Fiesta in the "Disney Junior Dance Party," said his Disney audition wasn't as nerve-racking as others have been.

"The environment was a lot more chill and friendly than you would expect in an audition," he said. "Once you're in the room, they make you feel really, really comfortable, which is amazing."

In fact, multiple people told Insider that the camaraderie among fellow auditionees was the best part of the experience.

"The people that you meet doing auditions, they tend to be just really amazing people that have like this wide-eyed optimism about the world," Natalie said. 

About half of the auditionees are cut after the initial round — some for their height

R egardless of the type of audition, getting past the initial cut is the first big hurdle.

Parkany, who attended three auditions specifically for the Disney College Program, said her first round consisted of a simple choreographed marching routine and only lasted about 15 minutes. 

"They know exactly what they're looking for," she said.

She also said that's when the casting directors cut "about half" of the auditionees.

Melanie had a similar experience, sharing that sometimes only two people in a group of 50 would move on.

Equity singers only have about 16 bars of music (30 seconds to a minute) to make that first impression at their auditions.

Dante Payne, an equity performer at Hong Kong Disneyland, said the "giant" group at the start is cut to around 15 people.

"You have to think of it like, if there are 100 people in a room, 25 of them are going for your character, two of you end up in the callback," he said.

Several people Insider spoke to said that being the right height, specifically the "Disney height" that casting directors mark down at the audition, plays a key role in getting past the first-round cuts.

"That was like the very first thing they did was they measured you," Tremmel, who says she's 5-foot-10 but was marked down as 5 feet 8 inches at her successful audition, said.

For face characters, like the Disney princesses, the casting directors can also be highly selective about unique facial features. 

Parkany said she was pretty sure wouldn't earn a look-alike role because of a mole on her face.

"I know that would kind of already knock me out from being a princess, they don't really tend to have those things," she said. 

Melanie said most of her auditions just consisted of "standing in a line and smiling with a number" as casting directors closely inspected her and the other 49 or so people in her group. 

Tremmel, who ended up playing around 20 different characters in the parks, had a similar experience during the final round of her audition process.

You can't prove anything, it's just what some strangers think your face looks like.

"They're getting really close up in your personal space to see your bone structure, to see how your skin is, to see your eye color, to see your eye shape, to see all these different things about you," she said. "They don't say anything. So it's really, really awkward."

"They put on some music, so they say that it's less awkward, but it's so you can't hear them talking about you," Melanie told Insider.

Ultimately, the directors had the final say over whatever they were looking for.

"You can't prove anything, it's just what some strangers think your face looks like. You can't earn it really, which is hard. It's hard to accept," Melanie said.

The order and activities of the rounds looked different for many of the people Insider spoke to, but most non-equity auditions include a more advanced dance routine (to separate the "movers" and the "dancers") and some form of "animation."

In the animating round, auditionees are given a scenario — like a villain creating a monster and then turning into that monster — and they have to give a wordless performance acting it out.

"If you think about characters, they have to act everything out without words. So they wanna be able to see if you can communicate in a very big and exaggerated way without words," Tremmel said.

Many performers don't get a chance to receive feedback after being cut

G etting cut from a Disney audition, whether it's in the first round or the final one, doesn't always come with a lot of feedback.

Melanie said she's seen internet creators accuse Disney casting directors of telling them they're "too fat" for a role. But she doesn't think that's true.

"They didn't say that, because if you don't even make it past that first round, you're not even going to get to talk to them," Melanie said. "You just turn around and leave the room. There is not an opportunity for that."

Planchet, who estimated that she went to 60 Disney auditions over the course of 10 years before landing a role, also told Insider that the casting directors "don't take time out of their day to do that."

"Even though I was rejected a bajillion times, I never heard like, 'Oh, you're not good enough for this thing.' I just didn't hear back," she said.

After her 12th audition, Melanie told Insider she pushed a casting director to tell her why she kept getting cut, and she said they told her that her eyes were "too round."

"If they'd been like, 'Oh, well it's your nose' or 'It's your teeth.' I mean, I was a 19-year-old girl. I probably would've gone out and done something about that, right? I mean, I was obsessed with trying to get this job," she said.

But Payne said there's more direct feedback from the casting directors at the equity auditions and callbacks. 

During a challenging callback for "Finding Nemo — The Musical," he said they hyped him up a little before he had to sing a particularly high note by saying, "We like your voice. We like you, we like your storytelling. So like just relax and sing the song."

"It just made it more of like a moment of trial and error with no consequences, even though my job was on the line, but it felt like it would've been OK if I didn't get it right," he told Insider. 

The endless cycle of auditioning and the hyperfocus on appearances can take a toll on aspiring performers

Natalie said she did a lot of research before all three of her auditions, and something that came up repeatedly was the sentiment that "if you just want it enough, you can have it."

But in her experience, "no matter how much you want it" the likelihood of being cast is "really, really small."

"It's a performing-arts job for one of the biggest companies in the entire world," she said.

The first time I was like, 'Well, this is gonna be the thing that makes me mean something.'

Still, Natalie said Disney does a great job of "selling a dream" to hopefuls around the world.

"It's kind of like the ultimate standard of beauty to be able to live up to ... It gives you this rock-hard sense of self-worth," she told Insider. "The first time I was like, 'Well, this is gonna be the thing that makes me mean something.'"

Auditioning can be an especially distressing experience for people of color. 

"In 2010 there was no Moana, there was no Elena of Avalor, there was no Mirabel from 'Encanto,'" Planchet said. "So, because I'm a person of color, I got passed over for pretty much every audition. They spent a lot of time casting white women."

Planchet told Insider that her early auditions still elicit negative feelings today — especially memories of seeing white women being cast as characters of color, like Pocahontas.

"I guess I regret letting it wear me down the way it did, because I started to get very upset that I knew I was talented enough for some of these jobs," she said. "And to see them go to white women, who already have so many opportunities, it started to break down my confidence and make me really upset."

Sarah Daniels, who started playing Mickey Mouse when she was 16 and went on to equity-performing roles, said she struggled with self-image after she was hired.

She told Insider she was originally "fitted" to play Alice alongside Mickey, but said her managers decided to wait until she was older to approve her for a face character. 

"I was like, 'But does that mean I didn't look good? Like, did I not look like Alice? Am I ever gonna get approved? Like, what's wrong with my face?' I mean, all these things just fly through your head," she said. 

Daniels, who started working in the parks in 2006, added, "I made $11.75 when I was a face character. And I was like, the stuff people go through just to put on that wig and make $12 an hour just blows my mind."

After spending so much time, effort, and money going to auditions, Melanie said that even the sight of the audition building brings back stressful memories.

"If I walked in that building today, I immediately get diarrhea. I get so much anxiety in there, every single time," she said. "And I'm not a person that's afraid of things."

She added that she started to internalize all the appearance-based rejection, which continued when she didn't feel "pretty enough to be a princess" after being cast as an ugly stepsister. 

"I think no matter how confident and comfortable as a person you are, standing there and smiling and having people talk about you and then not pick you for something that is considered traditionally very beautiful, is harming. It's really harming," Melanie said.

But she told Insider that, ultimately, the beauty standard isn't even based on looking like a cartoon character, because Disney is just trying to keep consistency between the performers playing the same roles.

"The standard that you're trying to attain when you're trying to get hired as a princess essentially is what is the most forgettable pretty face you can have," Melanie said.

She clarified that she thinks the women who ultimately get cast are beautiful, "but not getting picked shouldn't mean you're not beautiful."

Like Daniels, for Melanie, the mental toll of the audition process didn't end when she got the job — since keeping it isn't a guarantee.

"You have to keep going to those auditions and showing up and putting the costume on and having those same people look at you. Do they think you still look like this character? Do they think you look too old?" she said. "Even if you get in it, you have a ticking time bomb."

This week, Disney Cruise Line put out a casting call for auditioning Mainstage Dancer for fleet wide needs, current and future sailings. The roles include opportunities on the Disney Dream with rehearsal beginning April 2022.  According to the posting, casting will have an intentionally inclusive BIPOC approach, including the representation of classic roles brought to life on the Walt Disney Theatre stage. Disney Cruise Line is looking for a diverse range of performers to bring Disney’s fleet of ships to life! Candidates must be trained in ballet and jazz. Male identifying roles require Tumbling and/or Tap.

 We hire a repertory company to perform full scale musical theatre shows. Seeking a diverse range of performers to bring Disney’s fleet of ships to life!  Must be trained in ballet and jazz . Male identifying roles require Tumbling and/or Tap.

Contracts include: competitive pay, travel, room and board, significant contract completion bonus and some guest dining privileges.

Dancers for Male and Female identifying roles, All Ethnicities.  

Some callback candidates will be asked to sing 16 bars of a musical theatre selection of their choice, please be prepared.

About the Role & Team

The team has the primary responsibility of sourcing goods and services and coordinating their delivery for the Disney Cruise Line Ships and the private Islands. Responsible for coordinating the requirements from the customer and fulfilling them through the market in the required timeline, and by the most efficient means through effective quoting and negotiation. Work with partner departments to coordinate the most expedited and cost-efficient shipping modes and ensures that all shipping documentation is in accordance with Trade and Compliance guidelines. What You Will Do

You will focus on client management, category management, and technical solutions in support of Disney Cruise Line operations. Improve the Company’s procure to pay process by identifying and leading efforts with affected departments to reduce cycle times, improve customer service and reduce total costs. Source and negotiate supply relationships for internal clients. Provide quote management, project sourcing, and order execution for assigned Disney Cruise Line vessel. Coordinate and confirm requirements for on-board partners.

Leverage global supply base to ensure acquisition of requirements at the best landed cost. Raise as needed to resolve issues, i.e. extended or missed timelines, order errors, and returns. Lead Supplier Relationship Management program in support of the Sourcing Department goals. Establish supplier performance metrics, process Improvement and value opportunities. Support requirements for compliance with regulatory agencies (i.e. SOLAS, MARPOL, USCG, Lloyds Registry, etc.)

Required Qualifications & Skills

• 3+ years’ experience in supporting a Strategic Sourcing and Procurement department for Marine Industry and/ or Construction- Project-heavy related Space.
• Negotiation experience of pricing and commercial terms and conditions
• Drafting of Statements of Work for simple to moderately complex technical and non-technical engagements
• Understanding and execution of a RFP (Request for Pricing/ proposal) process for Services or Goods.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (esp. Exchange, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
• Uses technology to facilitate better results and support efficiency
• Analyzes problems optimally and takes action to resolve (Conceives creative ideas)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a Cruise Line Sourcing department with understanding of the applicable Categories, including MRO and Marine Technical Operations or Hotel/ hospitality.
• Contributes to team collaboration (Remaining productive despite uncertainty)
• Conveys relevant information (challenges, issues, trends, etc.) with external suppliers and internal cross-functional teams in a candid and timely manner
• Suggests ways to increase efficiencies in communication and production output with the team and key suppliers
• Strengthens others through mentoring and feedback (Inspiring and motivating peers)
• Operational familiarity with AMOS, Coupa, and SAP Sourcing and Procurement modules/ systems
• Bachelor’s Degree (Business, Engineering, or other quantitative discipline)
• Masters Degree

New Disney Destiny Cruise Will Launch in 2025, Inspired by ‘Dynamic Duality’ of Heroes and Villains

“[It] will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways...,” said Disney Cruise Line's senior VP

Disney fans will soon get to set sail with some of the brand’s beloved characters on a new cruise.

Disney Cruise Line has announced new details about its latest ship being constructed, Disney Destiny — described as full of “legends and lore” — which is set to launch in 2025.

The brand said that the ship’s design theme will be “Heroes and Villains,” and will be inspired by different “Disney stories, characters and theme park attractions” in order to “empower guests to embrace their own calling” while on the voyage, according to a press release. 

“The Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Imagineering teams were inspired by the dynamic duality of every great Disney story, where opposing forces of light and dark drive characters to rise to their purpose, when developing the Disney Destiny,” the press release said.

People aboard the cruise will be able to meet and interact with characters from The Lion King , Hercules and One Hundred and One Dalmatians and other Pixar and Marvel movies— some of whom were present in Disney Parks' new video introducing the ship.

The video features Captain Minnie as she searches the ship for a Disney Destiny commemorative coin, and she comes across Disney villains Scar and Cruella de Vil. Captain Minnie eventually finds the ship’s commemorative coin with Hades, and Hercules helps her to get it back. 

The storyline of the video hints at some of the “spaces, experiences and entertainment” guests can expect while setting sail on Disney Destiny.

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Cruise Line in a press release.

She continued, “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising as we offer even more ways for families to experience Disney magic and world-class service at sea.”

Disney also revealed its commemorative coin for the voyage, which depicts Minnie Mouse “striking a valiant pose” while wearing a cape “waving majestically in the sea breeze” as she leads the ship. The same filigree artwork will be featured on the bow of the Disney Destiny.

The ship is slowly coming together, having celebrated a new construction milestone on Wednesday with a keel laying ceremony, which is a formal recognition of the start of a ship's construction, at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

The ship is part of a multi-year expansion of Disney Cruise Line’s fleet, which also includes Disney Wish and Disney Treasure.

After three hours of pirates, explosions, and lots of water , 9-1-1 fans finally know who survived the epic, three-part season 7 premiere .

"It all happened really fast," co-creator and showrunner Tim Minear tells Entertainment Weekly of completing the cruise ship disaster episodes. "It was very difficult, and you always have that moment where you're just like, 'Am I going to be able to pull this off?'"

It may have felt quick, but getting Bobby ( Peter Krause ) and Athena ( Angela Bassett ) out of that sinking vessel actually took months of filming... and none of it on an actual cruise ship. As the series moves forward on dry land (though on one very wet driveway, with the Bachelor crossover coming next week ), we asked Minear to break down the deadly three-epsiode event, reveal what ideas never made it to air, and tease what's to come in the rest of season 7.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: This was a big undertaking...

TIM MINEAR: Shooting Bobby and Athena on a honeymoon cruise was more challenging than many things I've done on this show in the last seven seasons. We never got an actual cruise ship, so we had to shoot in hotels and on different types of vessels, and then [use] special effects and CGI. But just the idea of that surprised me. I thought that would be easy: You'd rent a cruise ship, you'd shoot on it for three days, you'd get a lot of stuff on the decks. But it just didn't turn out that way. It was very difficult to get a cruise ship. No cruise line wanted to be associated with a capsized ship, which I guess I can understand.

Well it all made for a very dramatic three episodes. So many massive sets, so much rising water.

The water's not actually rising, the set is sinking! The set was built on a gimbal inside a water tank. We would slowly lower the set into the tank, and it gives the effect that the water's rising around them. And the casino set.... The lowering of the table with Norman [played by Daniel Roebuck] on it, that was complicated to write, and it was very complicated to shoot. But that's Peter up there. Peter is climbing across those ropes up there — that delighted me.

The other thing that absolutely delighted me was that Angela Bassett was game for anything. She went into that water. When the bomb goes off in episode 2, and she goes flying against that wall, she actually did it! There's a stunt woman in there too, but Angela, she was game for anything.

Was there anything you wanted to do with this disaster that you weren't able to?

There was one scene that I did have to cut, that I was sad to cut. It was when Wes [played by Denzel Johnson] opens the door and that fireball comes out. Originally in the script, they still continued in that direction, and when they looked into that room, it was an upside down restaurant and the water was on fire. And so it's like, "How do we get to the other side of the restaurant and stop the gas that is feeding this fire?" And in the scene, in the script, Lola [played by Romy Rosemont] actually dives under the fire and swims under the water to turn it off. It was very Shelley Winters [in The Poseidon Adventure .]

Time and money just prohibited that from happening, so I made a little bit more of Wes' death. And then did give Lola an opportunity to retrieve the flare gun later in the episode, so she still got to go underwater. But that was a moment that I was sad to lose. And I know Romy was too, but she still got a little bit of action there at the end.

So now that Bobby and Athena are rescued, what can you tease about the rest of the season?

I just finished locking episode 4 and I was like, "Hmm, there's no natural disasters. Things aren't blowing up all over the place." But there is the Bachelor crossover, so we have that to look forward to. And now we get to spend a little time breathing with the 118 and dig into their personal stories a little bit more. Yeah, I don't know how much I should spoil.... Definitely a beloved character will be returning in episode 4, I can put it that way....
