The Guide To Dudhsagar Waterfalls

  • Stowed away on the border between Goa and Karnataka is Dudhsagar, one of India’s tallest waterfalls. Most trails boast rich flora, fauna, and sceneries and so does this one. However, this trek has an added highlight – something that few treks in the world do – a good old railway track!
  • This trek to the waterfall is accessible through the Indian Rail Network and jeeps operated by private tour operators. The waterfall especially comes alive during monsoon, when it plunges, as white as milk, from a height of 310 m.

➤ Trail Information

How to reach the base camp

Dudhsagar Railway Station is 570 km from Bangalore. Board the Mas Vasco Express (Train number: 17311) from Bangalore. The train runs only on Fridays.

One can also trek to Dudhsagar from Kulem, which lies in Goa. However, the trek from Dudhsagar station is more promising in terms of beauty and an overall experience.

How to Reach Dudhsagar Waterfalls From Karnataka:

As of April 2019, trekking is still not allowed either from Goa or from Karnataka. If you do have any updates, please drop an email to [email protected] with a Subject like “Dudhsagar waterfalls update”

Get off the train at Castle Rock station. Castle Rock is the last station that lies within the border of Karnataka. There are a series of rail tunnels, the longest one being Tunnel 2, which stretches a distance of 2.4 km.

The trek from Castle Rock to Dudhsagar is 11 km long. Follow the railway track all the way to the waterfall. It passes through dense forests and smaller waterfalls within Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. It takes around 6-7 hours to complete the trek. One can camp at the Dudhsagar Station, as camping is allowed here. It is advisable to carry your tents and sleeping bags along.

How to Reach Dudhsagar Waterfalls From Goa:

Since the time of the ban, trekking to the waterfalls along the railway tracks is not possible. For people who still want to visit the Dudhsagar waterfalls, an alternative way is using Jeeps available at the entrance to the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary

The entrance to Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary lies about a 10-15 minute walk from Kollem Railway station. The fees are as follows

Entry fees  – Rs 20 Camera fees – Rs 300 Videography fees – Rs 5000

Jeep trip to the waterfall – Rs 2500 for an entire jeep. It is usually shared among 5-6 people. So per head cost of Rs 400-50. The ride to the base of the fall takes about 45 minutes through a bumpy off-road trail and hence taking your vehicle is not recommended. Also, there are multiple streams crisscrossing the off-road trail and only sturdy jeeps of 4WD SUVs can navigate them.

Once at the base it’s hardly 5 mins to the waterfall. Your jeep will wait for your there for an hour and a half and thereafter bring you back to the entrance of the sanctuary.

At the time of updating this information, trekking has been banned, but there have been unconfirmed reports of the trekking being allowed starting monsoon of 2019. We strongly advise getting confirmed details before heading for a trek.

Enjoy your travel (monsoon is the Best time)

Carry efficient monsoon gear (raincoat, poncho), shoes, torch and sufficient food. During monsoon, there are many streams to fill your bottles. During other seasons, carry enough water to last you the entire trek. Confirm train tickets.

Respect Nature, do not dirty this beautiful place. In case of an approaching train, walk away from the track to a safe distance. Do not walk in groups inside a tunnel. Walk one behind the other.

Clean and carry your trash at the camping site of Dudhsagar. Dispose of it at the designated disposal provided by the Indian Railways and the Forest Department.

➤ What to Carry for the trek

No, stuffing it all in isn’t the right way to do it  Packing a backpack correctly saves precious time that you might waste trying to find your things later. It is wise to spend some time learning what goes into packing a backpack.

What should I pack?  On a trek, you only get what you take. Something as simple as a forgotten matchbox can cripple your cooking plans throughout the trek. So, it’s essential to prepare early and prepare well. To begin with, make a checklist. While shopping, remember this thumb rule – keep it light. “Every item needs to be light. This ensures that your backpack, on the whole, stays light,” says Sandhya UC, co-founder of Indiahikes. Balancing out heavy items with light ones isn’t going to have the same effect as having all light items. “Always opt for good quality, light items,” says Sandhya.

How much should my bag weigh?

“Your backpack for a weekend trek should weigh between 8 and 10 kg,” explains Arjun Majumdar, co-founder of Indiahikes, “To break it down, your tent should weigh around 2.5 kg, your sleeping bag, around 1.5 kg, and the ration, stove and clothes should constitute the other 5 kg.” The best way to plan is by concentrating on the necessities – food, shelter and clothes. Gather only those things that you’ll need to survive. Do not pack for ‘if’ situations. “That’s one of the common mistakes that people make – packing for ‘if situations’. It only adds to the baggage that you can do without on a trek,” says Sandhya.

Trekking hack

One good way to go about it is to prepare a list of absolute essentials. Start with the most essential and end with the least essential. That way, when you feel you are overshooting the limit, you can start eliminating from the bottom. Another tip is to be smart while packing clothes. Invest in light. wash and wear fabrics. “Replace a sweater with two t-shirts,” adds Sandhya. Layering is  the  mantra when it comes to trekking. Refer to Sandhya’s clothes list to pack smart.

How to pack  The thumb rule for this one is to eliminate air spaces. Make sure that everything is packed tightly, especially clothes and jackets, as they tend to take up maximum air space. Put in all the large items first. Then squeeze in the smaller ones in the gaps. This ensures minimum air space. A good way to pack clothes is by using the Ranger Roll method.

Click on the image to view the Video

Where to pack  Bottom  Sleeping bag : Make this your base layer. Sleeping bags tend to be voluminous, but do not weigh much. They’re perfect for the bottom of the bag.  Tent : Just like the sleeping bag, even tents are voluminous and light. Keep the tent poles separately and place the fabric at the bottom of the backpack. Middle  Heavy jacket : Roll up the jacket in a tight ball and place it in the middle of the backpack, close to your back. The middle region of the backpack should always have the heaviest items. You can store other things like rations or mini stoves in the middle.  Other clothes : Roll other clothes and place them in the remaining space, to fill air gaps.

Backpack essentials

Top  Water : Water, although heavy, needs to be easily accessible. So put it in the topmost region of your backpack.  Medicine box : This is another component that you wouldn’t want to be scavenging for when in need.  Poncho : It could rain at any time in the mountains. So, ponchos should be accessible easily. Also, having a waterproof poncho at the top of the backpack provides additional waterproofing to items in the bag.

➤ How to Get Fit for the trek

Cardiovascular endurance

The secret to ascending any trail lies in building your cardiovascular endurance. You can begin by jogging every day. Ideally, you should be able to jog 4 km in 20 minutes before the start of the trek. It takes time to be able to cover this distance in the given time. Start slow and increase your pace every day. Swimming, cycling, and stair climbing without too many breaks in between can help too. Strength This is another area you should work on. You will need to build strength in your muscles and your core body. You can do some squats to strengthen your leg muscles. Do around 3 sets of squats, with 8 squats in each set. Apart from this, you can add planks and crunches to your workout.

Flexibility

Another aspect that will help you trek comfortably is flexibility. For this, you can do some stretching exercises – stretch your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, lower back muscles, and shoulders regularly. Carrying a backpack, however, light can become a strain after a while. These exercises will help you to be in good shape before the trek. Working out indoors

If you can’t go out and jog because of time and space constraints,  here’s a video  you can use to work out indoors.

Have you ever walked on a railway track? We have crossed a ton but were never allowed to walk on one. And all that for good reason! A view that we still remember quite vividly and can still feel the goosebumps on our arms. That was the beginning of one of our best weekends and boy, would we love to go back and live it all over again.

How To Reach?

The nearest airport is Goa International Airport (60 Km to Kulem, Airport code: GOI). Hire an airport taxi to reach Kulem and from there you can trek or rent a jeep to the waterfall.

Located on the Goa- Karnataka border, there are two ways to the falls.

If you are traveling from Mumbai, Goa, or Pune, step down at Kulhem/Collem/Kulem (Station code: KLM). Kulem is well connected to major Indian cities like New Delhi, Chennai, Pune, Bhubaneswar, Madgaon, and Bhopal directly. The trains available via this route are:

  • Amaravathi Express (18047)
  • Goa Express (12780)
  • Poona Express (11097)

If you are traveling from Bangalore, step down at Castle Rock (Station code: CLR). The direct trains to Castle Rock are:

  • Yeshvantpur Vasco da Gama Express (17309)
  • Velankanni Vasco da Gama Express (17316) – weekly once either on Tuesday or Thursday
  • Chennai Central Vasco da Gama Express (17311) – only on Fridays

There are several trains from Bangalore to Londa Junction. Either take a connecting train from Londa or take a taxi to reach Castle Rock which is about 30 Km.

Drive your vehicle to the park entrance of Dudhsagar waterfall or up to Kulem which is 60 km from Panjim by road. There is a car parking facility at Kulem. From Kulem, take a jeep safari or trek to the falls. The bike ride will be bumpy and extremely slippery during the monsoon. Vehicle passage to the waterfall is possible only when the Mandovi River is dry or during summer.

No direct buses are available to Kulem from other states. However, you can reach Kulem by public transport from Goa.

By Public Transport From Goa

From Goa, take the Vasco-Kulem daily passenger train (56966/ 56961) or the VSG Howrah Express (18048) to reach Kulem early morning. Kulem is the last station for the passenger train. Don’t confuse Kulem and Kalem, as they are different stations. You can also take a bus to Kulem from Panaji/Madgaon.

Take the Kulem-Londa train to catch a glimpse of the majestic Dudhsagar from an inside train.

Which Train Passes Through Dudhsagar Waterfall?

5 Different Routes To Reach Dudhsagar Waterfall

1. jeep safari from kulem.

Best time: Post-monsoon (October to May)

Foot of the waterfall during summer where you can take a dip

The most ideal way for large groups with family and kids to visit this place is to opt for a Jeep Safari at Kulem, which is organized by the Goa Forest Department from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. A maximum of 7 adults is allowed in each jeep which costs you Rs. 2800 for a single journey (which may vary depending on the season). Rs. 30 will be collected for the lifejacket and an entry fee of Rs. 50 for entering Bhagwan Mahavir National Park. Rs. 30 is charged for a still camera and Rs. 250 for a professional camera.

The jeep will drop you close to the foot of the waterfall. It’s just a 1 Km walk from here. You can swim in the water pool for around 60-90 minutes and then return to the jeep.

Online booking of tickets for Dudhsagar Falls is now available. For details, check Goa Tourism to skip the queue during peak season.

Note: Jeep safari is not available during the rainy and monsoon seasons, as the route is slippery/muddy. It may resume in October depending on the rains.

2. From Castle Rock Railway Station, Karnataka

Best time: Monsoon (Mid July to October)

The most popular trekking route to the waterfall leads you to the railway track or the middle bridge which is in-between the waterfall. It is a 14 Km trek that takes around 5-6 hours one way. It has the most picturesque views of the Western Ghats and valleys with approximately 11 instagrammable tunnels. Be very careful while walking in those tunnels as trains may pass any time.

Instagrammable tunnels during the trek

After crossing the 13 th tunnel, there is a viewpoint of the Dudhsagar waterfall. We can’t say this enough but the view from here left us mesmerized and we just couldn’t get enough of it.

You will not be able to go to the bottom tier of the waterfall through this route.

Note: The Castle Rock trekking route is permanently closed due to mishaps and tragic incidents in recent years. One will be heavily fined by the railway police and is forced to go back if found trekking on this railway route.

3. From Kulem Railway Station, Goa

Side view of the top waterfall amidst greenness

The official trekking route is the Kulem- Dudhsagar route which is 11 km one way and takes approximately 3-4 hours. We trekked through this route. You need a compulsory guide to trek through this route.

The Best Local Guides

  • Lawrence- +91 7798080543 (speaks Hindi, Konkani)

Human bridge made by joining hands to cross water streams

This trek takes you to the bottom tier of the waterfall where you can click pictures of trains passing over the middle bridge from the front of the waterfall. Start as early as possible from the trek starting point, Kulem. Wear life jackets and start trekking to catch the sun’s golden light reflected from the tracks. Halfway along the route, you have to go down from the railroad to the jeep road. This road is closed for Jeeps during monsoon.

Alternatively, you can also walk to Sonaulim station to save 2 km on the mud route and cross the only tunnel in this trek route. Along your way, you’ll encounter the wild beauty of Bhagwan Mahavir National Park as you trek through the woods. You can also refill your water bottles while crossing small streams.

Cross bridges along the way and watch the massive flow of dudh from the viewpoint.

Bridge along the way in Kulem route

Beware of monkeys as they take away the munchkins or even bags from you. Start your return journey before 3 PM as the sun sets early during the monsoon.

4. From Kuveshi Village, Karnataka

Best time: Post Monsoon (November to February)

Top view of the waterfall during summer - kuveshi route

This is the most difficult but adventurous route that will lead you to the head and edge of the waterfall from where it plunges down into a pool of water. The trek starts from Kuveshi village which is 10 km from Castle Rock station. Take a cab to the village which has less than 50 families with no electricity and mobile signal. But the locals will guide you. You have to trek through the forest and cross the jungle canopy which is built by the locals about 30 feet high and for a distance of about 240 m. Directions are marked on poles that are quite visible along the route.

Note: You cannot take this route during the monsoon as you will have to cross the Mandovi River which is full and rough in the rains.

5. From Dudhsagar Railway Station, Goa

Best time: Monsoon, Post Monsoon (July- February)

Dudhsagar rail stop is not a station where passengers expect a platform. All trains crossing the waterfall will have a short 1-2-minute unscheduled stop at the Dudhsagar station. Passengers have to get down from the train in that short period. From this rail stop, visitors have to walk a km on the tracks crossing a 200 m dark train tunnel to reach the waterfall. On your way back, either trek or hop on a locomotive train and head off to Kulem or Castle Rock Station, which is not recommended though.

Dudhsagar railway station with no platform

Note: Indian Railways has banned people from getting down the trains at the Dudhsagar station and walking along the rail tracks as it is deemed too risky. During monsoon, railway police stand near the Dudhsagar station to ensure no one gets off the train. So, officially this route is not allowed.

Where To Stay?

There are only limited stay options available. Please check for WiFi and mobile network connections before booking. Some of our recommendations include Nature’s Nest Goa, Dudhsagar Spa Resort, Jungle Book/Jungle Cafe – closest to the waterfall, Dudhsagar plantation, The Farmhouse India, and Shangri La Jungle Resort.

Where To Eat?

Restaurants are very limited. But you can find eateries near Kulem station or the ticket counter. Stock some snacks but make sure to carry back the waste.

One restaurant closest to the Dudhsagar waterfall (8 km away) is the Jungle Book Cafe. The food here is served as a buffet and is decently priced. The cafe also serves juice/beer at an additional cost.

Other Places To Visit Nearby

Another adventurous place to trek is the Tambi Surla waterfall. However, this trek cannot be done on the same day.

Dudhsagar trek: everything you need to know.

  • February 26, 2022
  • Best Places , Out Door Adventure

The mighty hills of western ghats have always been a heaven for nature lovers and trekkers owing to its abundance of water bodies and flora & fauna. The Dudhsagar waterfalls located about 28kms from Goa near the borders of Karnataka are no exception either. At a height of 1017 ft and an average width of a100 ft, it is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country with an 11km long trek trail known as the Dudhsagar trek trail leading to the falls.

The word Dudhsagar means ‘sea of milk’ indicating the way the water looks when it falls down the hill – massive and foamy white. The Dudhsagar trek is well known all over the country and it is visited by hundreds of domestic and foreign tourists daily during the trekking season.

Dudhsagar Trek – Some Quick Facts

  • Location – Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, Sanguem District, Goa
  • Total Distance – 11km
  • Trek Difficulty – Easy to Moderate
  • Duration – 4-6 hrs one side
  • Altitude -1017 ft
  • Base -Dudhsagar Railway Station
  • Best Time to Visit – Post Monsoon

Dudhsagar Trek – How to reach the base?

The nearest railway station to the falls is the Dudhsagar railway station, which is just a kilometer away from it. However, if you want to reach the place you need to take the train to either the Kulem station or Castlerock station as there aren’t any trains that stop by Dudhsagar station now.

Dudhsagar-railway-station

Kulem station in Goa is about 10 km away from the falls while the Castlerock railway station in Karnataka is about 45kms away. As for which station to drop by, it depends on where you are coming from. If you are coming from the Southside, it will be convenient for you to choose the Castlerock station and if you are from Mumbai, Pune, or any other city north to the falls it will be easier if you drop by the Kulem station in Goa.

If you wish to come by road, you need to take National Highway 4-A, to Mollem, and then travel to Kulem from there.

Dudhsagar Waterfalls – How to get there?

There are mainly two ways to reach the falls – one by foot via the Dudhsagar trek trail or by jeeps which will take you all the way down to the lake.

Dudhsagar-falls

Dudhsagar Trek Trail

If you are visiting the place to enjoy trekking , the 11km long trekking path through the Bhagwan Mahavir wildlife sanctuary awaits you. The most special aspect of this trail is an old railway track amidst the dense forest that leads to the falls making Dudhsagar trek a lot more interesting for trekkers. They can traverse along this track to reach the falls, which will be a lifetime experience for many.

Many factors make this track favored by trekkers. One is that it leads their way to the falls. Also, the whole 4-6hrs walk through the track is a treat to the eyes and renders a next-level experience to the trekkers. It is sided by the lush greenery of the western ghats and if you are lucky enough you can spot some exotic wildlife of the ghats. Another attraction of the trail is a 200m long railway tunnel that falls along the path. You can also see a few small waterfalls along the way.

If you prefer to take the trekking trail, make sure it is open during the time of your visit as it is not open throughout the year and had also been shut for some time during normal open days due to Covid. So, before your visit just check with the local authorities or your tour operator whether the trail is open or not.

In Jeep via the Sanctuary

Even though the trekking trail is the most mesmerizing one, it may not be favored by every tourist as you need to walk 4-6 hrs straight with your backpack and raingear. So, there is an option for a jeep safari through the dense jungle and alongside small streams.

More than 400 jeeps operate in the place to take tourists to and from the falls. You have to reach Kulem and from there these jeeps will take you to the waterfall.  For a single person, it will cost you around 500-600 INR for the jeep safari with each jeep accommodating around 6-7 people. They will take you downhill through the forest, traversing muddy terrain and streams on the way. At the foot of the falls, they will drop you and will wait for 1.5 hrs for you there. If you need to stay for another hour, you can by paying an additional 500 INR as waiting charges.

When you take the jeep safari, at the entrance of the sanctuary, you need to pay entry fees and additional camera fees if you are carrying any with you. Also, tourists must rent life jackets to keep them safe in the lake downhill. So, the total cost will be around 800 per person excluding the camera fee. If you don’t want to get to the waterfalls via the Dudhsagar trek trail, but still want to enjoy the forest and the Fall, a jeep safari is the best option for you.

Things to do in Dudhsagar

Trekking & camping.

The trek trail including the old railway track to the Dudhsagar falls is frequented by trekkers except for heavy rains, when the trail will be closed as there are chances of heavy landslides and at that time the fall overflows to the railway bridge in the path. Hence considering the safety of the tourists, entry to the trail is denied at that time. All other times, trekkers with their camping gears packed at their back are a regular sight in the tracks.

The camping sites near the falls are the best place to enjoy nature at its best and get away from the hustle & bustle of your daily life.

When choosing to trek the Dudhsagar trail many are confused on whether they should go alone or have a guide with them. Will the authorities allow trekking without a guide? Of course, they do.

But whether to go with or without a guide depends on your trekking expertise. If you are a frequent trekker or you have walked through the Dudhsagar trail before and are quite familiar with the track, you can surely go alone. But if you are new to this sport and trail, we recommend you have a guide hired to take you there. Also, make sure you have your raingear as it can rain at any time in the hills.

Also, if you intend to camp, make sure you are fully equipped for the activity. Make a checklist of all the things you need to pack before your journey and be sure to take them all. By taking them all what is meant is ONLY and MUST take what is necessary. It is very important to keep the weight of your backpack low to ease your struggle during the trek. Also, you shouldn’t omit the necessities either, be it your food or light or things as small as a matchbox.

Dudhsagar Devi Temple

Dudhsagar Falls Name & It's Legends

Dudhsagar Falls Name & It's Legends

Dudhsagar Falls is a four-tiered waterfall which is well-known for its cascading appearance. The term ‘Dudhsagar’ translates to ‘milky white sea’ due to its white sprays and foam.

There is an age-old legend associated with the name of Dudhsagar Falls. Once upon a time, there was a princess who was a popular daughter of the King of Ghats. This lady was both modest and beautiful and believed in the piousness of heart, mind, and soul.

According to the legend, this princess would regularly bathe in a lake located close to her father’s castle.

After bathing, she, along with her handmaidens, would assemble alongside the lake. The princess would consume a whole jug of milk when she was out with her handmaidens. Made of pure gold, the jar was inlaid with some brightly sparkling diamonds.

Once, while she was busy drinking her jug of milk, she came across a young and beautiful prince who trespassed the nearby woods. The moment he heard the laughter of these ladies, he stopped then and there.

The princess was only wrapped in minimal bathing attire. Thus her handmaidens poured the same jug of milk over the hills to produce a cascading effect. It was done to cover the princess, who could then immediately wrap herself in her royal clothes.

This cascading milky appearance, which was believed to guard the modesty of the royal princess, is today considered the legend of Dudhsagar Falls.

Dudhsagar Waterfalls

This waterfall should undoubtedly be on every adventurer’s bucket list!

Dudhsagar Waterfalls, which translates to a “ sea of milk,” are just 60 kilometers away from Panaji. There is no shortage of places to visit in India , and Goa has always attracted people to it. This spectacular waterfall has served as a magnet for tourists. It is listed among India’s tallest waterfalls, with a height of 310 m (1017 feet) and an average width of 30 m (100 feet).

The best time to see its true beauty is during the monsoon season, when you can experience the cascading effect as the water flows down through the grassy highlands, giving the illusion of a milky white sea and creating a spectacular moment worth capturing. This is how Dudhsagar got its name.

3 Things to Keep in Mind While Traveling to Dudhsagar Waterfalls

Dudhsagar Waterfalls, South Goa

The exact meaning of Dudhsagar is a “sea of milk.” Many locals believe that this name comes from the mythic tale of a princess; the tale is about a princess who used to have a bath near the Mandovi River, and she used to drink sweetened milk from a golden jug after taking a bath. It was like any other usual day for her when she noticed a prince gazing at her, so in an attempt to cover her, her maidens poured the milk from the jug in front of her to create a virtual curtain, thus obstructing the view of the prince.

According to this classic old tale, in honor of the princess, milky water still flows down from the green hills.

How to Reach Dudhsagar Waterfalls ?

It is easy to find your way to the four-tiered attraction, regardless of your mode of travel, be it by air, rail, or bus. The falls are situated in the Western Ghats near Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary in South Goa . The different routes that lead to your destination include:

This mode of travel is only allowed when the water level is low between January and May.

You can hire the jeep from the local Dudhsagar Jeep Association counter at Collem. Moreover, this extremely fun adventure just costs INR 500 per head and will drop you at the base of the waterfalls.

Dudhsagar Waterfall’s Railway Station

The magnificent falls should be seen in their full glory during the monsoon season. Yes, the falls look splendid even in summer, but you should visit during the monsoon season because the cascading effect of the water falling through the green highlands can be clearly seen.

However, you need to exercise caution as the monsoon rains can increase the water level, so some of the usual things may get restricted, and always carry a life jacket during trekking.

  • Dudhsagar Waterfall In Goa: Visit This Startling Marvel Of The Western Ghats In 2024

23 Mar 2023

The riveting brilliance of God’s creation is depicted in the startling marvel of Dudhsagar waterfall . Strategically located on the Goa-Karnataka border (but mainly in Goa), the gorgeous waterfall attracts thousands of tourists to its bounty. The gushing water from the streams creates an illusion of milk flowing through the mountains. As if a background out of Michelangelo’s painting, it exudes power and beauty. The strong currents and rushing sound of water subdue all other unnecessary chatter from your mind. A light shower from the Dudhsagar waterfall on your face can make all the chaos of life seem insignificant.

Geographic Description

dudhsagar trek best season

The three streamed, the four-tiered waterfall is the fifth highest waterfall in India with a staggering 600-meter height to its attribute. Accessible only by train or on foot, Dudhsagar is one of the finest and most pristine pieces from nature’s collection. The first sight of the milky white waterfalls can spell-bind even the direst of people. It is as surreal as an oasis of water, right in the middle of Thar Desert. Dotted with rich vegetation on every side, here, only the excited and enthusiastic eco-tourists will be your companions. Other times, the local villagers will engross you with their acumen and warmth. More often than not, Indian macaques try to befriend you.

The railway track is the perfect vantage point to appreciate this magnificence. And the view is splendid as the vapour arising from the exuberantly gushing water forms a painting of clouds descending to witness the awe-inspiring falls. You can look at good 200 m up to the fall and down to the green lake in the luscious Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a decent 100 m downwards from the track. The foam of water at the base of waterfalls gives it an ethereal aura. The green puddle is a good picnic spot where you can take a swim and have a fun day with your family and friends.

Myth And Legends

Bathed in rich history and a story about the virtue and modesty of a princess, Dudhsagar Waterfall has plenty to offer to tourists

Image Credit: Samson Joseph for Wikimedia Commons

Fables state that there was a beautiful princess who used to love taking a bath in a lake near her abode, presently Dudhsagar. In her bathing ritual, it was given that she would finish her bath with a drink of sweetened milk in her gold mug. One fine day when she was out having bath in the lake, she noticed a charming prince gazing at her from afar. She immediately spilled the milk in the water to bar his view through the crystal clear water of the lake. It is said that it is her mug of milk that is flowing endlessly in the streams of the waterfall, hence the name ‘Dudh’sagar waterfall. To this day, nothing has been unable to take away the fall’s pristine whiteness. It is said to signify the virtue and modesty of that pampered princess, till date.

Best Time for Dudhsagar Trek

Best Time for Dudhsagar Trek

Introduction

See you in the magical world of Dudhsagar Trek where nature lays bare its magnificence. If you have a passion for trekking or simply love nature, this journey will not disappoint. To have the best time of your adventure, proper timing is everything. Let’s discuss the best season for Dudhsagar Trek and why it should be attempted by every nature enthusiast.

Best Time To Visit

Monsoon magic (june - september).

Imagine this – beautiful green fields, flowing waterfalls, and gentle rain drips. From June to September, Dudhsagar Trek turns into a fairy tale land when Monsoon arrives. 310 meters high, the falls are at their magnificent best with a sea of milk spill. However, monsoon treks come with their challenges; such as slippery trails so carry the right gear.

Post-Monsoon Bliss (October - November)

At the end of the monsoon season, Dudhsagar remains green while trails become easier to navigate. Trekking from October to November is a good season because it has a comfortable climate. The water flow in Dudhsagar Falls is still stunning, and you can see beautiful vegetation as well as animals on your way. This post-monsoon season balances both in terms of landscaping and easy trekking.

Winter Wonderland (December - February)

Dudhsagar in winter is entirely different altogether. It is cool weather, and everything around takes on a peaceful beauty. Although the water flow might be not as stiff, the trek becomes easier and hence you can tour this area more leisurely. Make sure you pack a jacket so that it will keep you warm during the cold mornings and nights.

Pre-Monsoon Thrill (March-May)

3-5 Dudhsagar undergoes pre-monsoon season from March to May. It starts heating up and the landscapes start going dry. Though the falls would be less grandeur during monsoon, The trail becomes more feasible. Trekking during this time is good for people who want to take it easy and would like to visit Dudhsagar in a much quieter setting.

Conclusively, the best time for Dudhsagar Trek will be determined based on you and your ability to tolerate trekking conditions. You may be drawn to the luxuriant greenery of monsoon, you might like the mild days after it ends, or passionately experience winter stillness in Dudhsagar Falls. Interestingly, whatever time of year people choose this place for spending their vacation – any time becomes worthwhile when being there! So, make up your mind and get ready for this amazing journey to the rainforest through Dudhsagar Trek. Happy trekking!

Dudhsagar Waterfalls, Goa: How to Reach, Timings, Tickets

Located around 60 kilometres away from Goa, on the Goa and Karnataka border, Dudhsagar waterfall is amongst the five highest waterfalls in India. With a height of around 310m (1017ft) and about 100ft in width, Dudhsagar Waterfalls displays a tremendous power of nature, creating a sight worth capturing. This glorious waterfall is one of the best places to visit near Goa , owing to its charismatic natural beauty and striking environment. This gorgeous four-tier waterfall became more popular after its presence in the blockbuster movie- Chennai Express in 2013. It is now one of the most popular spots for tourists visiting Goa and nearby places. The Dudhsagar waterfalls in Goa initially look like a pour out of milk, coming down from the mountain, later transforming into gushing cascades. Here’s everything you should know about Dudhsagar Waterfalls.

Dudhsagar Waterfalls – History

The most famous waterfall in Goa, Dudhsagar means the Sea of Milk owes its name to a myth. This was the favourite place of a beautiful princess who used to have a bath in a lake near the Mandovi River every day. After the bath, she would often drink sweetened milk from a golden jug. Once, while having a bath in the lake, she noticed a handsome prince gazing at her. At that moment, she poured the milk from the Golden jug to create a white virtual curtain in front of her, obstructing the view through crystal clear water of the lake. According to the myth, the milk still cascades down the mountain slope in the honour of princess’s virtues.

How to Reach Dudhsagar Waterfall in Goa

The Dudhsagar waterfall is situated in the Western Ghats close to Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary in Goa. A trek to Dudhsagar will allow you to witness the natural wonder of the Sanctuary jungle. This sanctuary is home to many animals and birds, including wild dogs, Bengal tiger, grey-headed myna, spotted deer, bear, leopards, bison, and different varieties of butterflies - lime butterfly, Mormon, tailed jay, to name a few.  There are different ways to reach this waterfall that include:

There are two trains available on daily basis, but they are not directly connected to the fall. Kulem and Castle Rock are the nearest railway stations from where travellers can trek to waterfalls. This mode of reaching the waterfall is strongly recommended for adventure and trek lovers. However, those who are travelling with aged people and children should avoid using this option.

Situated on the coast of Goa and Karnataka, Dudhsagar waterfall can be reached by road too. In case you are travelling to this place from Panjim - the capital of Goa or any other location in North Goa, then you would be required to go by road. You can hire private taxis that will take you to the entry of Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary near the village – Mollem on Goa- Karnataka Border. From this spot, you can take the official management’s Jeeps to reach the waterfalls.

Note: Visitors are allowed to spend a total of 1 hour 30 minutes after reaching this famous waterfall in Goa. This time is applied from the time you are dropped at the parking spot, till the time the allocated jeep returns.

About Dudhsagar Falls

Dudhsagar Falls (lit. 'Sea of Milk') is a four-tiered waterfall located on the Mandovi River in the Indian state of Goa. Dudhsagar Falls is amongst India's tallest waterfalls with a height of 310 m (1017 feet) and an average width of 30 metres (100 feet). The falls is located in the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park among the Western Ghats. The waterfall is located near Karnataka & Goa Border. The falls is a punctuation mark in the journey of the Mandovi River from the Western Ghats to Panjim where it meets the Arabian sea. The area is surrounded by deciduous forests with rich biodiversity. The falls are not particularly spectacular during the dry season but during the monsoon season, however, the falls are fed by rains and form a huge force of water.

Best time to visit Dudhsagar Falls

  • Dudhsagar Falls Guide : How to Reach ?

Dudhsagar is open for visitors by the Goa Forest department from October Month. You can plan a trip to Dudhsagar  after monsoon season. During the monsoon season, a visit to Dudhsagar can be risky. As it is located in the dense jungles of western ghat, the trail becomes quite slippery and chances of spotting some wild animals are also a risk factor. Due to heavy rain, the water level rises and it is another reason to avoid a trip to Dudhsagar during the monsoons.

The pleasant weather is just like cherry on the cake to the beauty of Dudhsagar . Make sure you start your trip early in the morning so that you have the full day to enjoy the amazing sight of India’s best waterfall.

The best time to visit Dudhsagar is just after monsoon. The milky white water flows with gush which is a treat to eyes. The months from October to May is the best time to Visit Dudhsagar trip.

Dudhsagar Entry & Other fee:

  • The forest ministry charges a minimal amount of ₹1000 per person for a jeep safari ride including life jackets.
  • For still camera, there is a charge of ₹ 300 approx
  • Professional camera, there is a hefty charge of ₹ 5000 approx.

Please note:

The station which is near and accessible to the falls is Castle Rock station. This railway stop of Dudhsagar is not a station where passengers can keep their expectation high regarding a platform. The passengers along with the visitors are required to climb the rail compartment’s steep ladder that too in about 1-2 minutes stop which is unscheduled. The visitors are expected to walk a kilometer on the tracks from the rail stop to reach the falls. The walk is made a bit tough because of the presence of a 200-meter train tunnel which is entirely dark.

The Indian Railways has banned the passengers from boarding or de-boarding the train at the Dudhsagar railway stop. You will not find fresh drinking water and restroom facilities in the proximity of the falls and the rail stop. Also, you will not find cellular power and road transportation access. Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary which is near Mollem, a Goan village can help you reach the Dudhsagar Waterfalls. Well, you will witness that this Association will take you through the lush and evergreen forests with streams having pristine waters flowing heavily. At the moment, this is the only access to the waterfalls that you will find.

The perks of going through the Association is that you will be able to see the proper view of the Dudhsagar Waterfalls, whereas if you go by Indian railways, then you will be able to see only the half side view of the waterfalls.

Screen Rant

Resident alien season 4 already set up the show's next best sci-fi guest star.

Resident Alien has already had several sci-fi stars appear in guest roles, but the show's next big cameo could come from an unexpected place.

  • Resident Alien season 4 may feature a cameo from one of the show's key figures, tying in with the Resident Alien 's history of sci-fi stars.
  • The involvement of Star Trek veteran Robert Duncan McNeill could add more depth and excitement to Resident Alien .
  • McNeill's career trend of directing and appearing in other projects makes him a strong candidate for a memorable Resident Alien cameo.

Resident Alien has already starred several sci-fi icons, but Resident Alien season 4 could feature a cameo from a key figure who has been working on the Syfy show all along. Resident Alien 's cameos from sci-fi stars range from cult heroes to figures from smash-hit blockbusters. The irreverent Alan Tudyk-led comedy-drama uses the exciting additions to the Resident Alien cast in various ways, with some becoming mainstays on the show while others only have brief appearances. The acting history of a key member of the Resident Alien team would make him perfect to star in a scene or two.

Resident Alien season 4 hasn't yet been confirmed to be on the way, but should the story of Harry Vanderspeigle continue, it would be reasonable to assume that the show would carry on its trend of featuring guest actors with ties to big sci-fi franchises. If so, the stars in question could come from a variety of places. However, Resident Alien season 4 could mark the debut of a behind-the-scenes figure whose career trajectory has shifted slightly since his biggest role.

Resident Alien Season 3 Ending Explained: What Happened To Harry?

Star trek actor robert duncan mcneill is involved with resident alien season 4, ncneill has worked behind the scenes of resident alien since the show began.

Robert Duncan McNeill's most famous role was Lt. Tom Paris in all seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager . While he doesn't star in Resident Alien , McNeill is an executive producer, director, and has earned his first career writing credit with the show. Paris was Voyager 's charismatic helmsman whose story featured a heartwarming redemption arc. While he wasn't one of the most iconic Star Trek characters, he played a huge role in the ensemble that was Star Trek: Voyager 's cast . As such, McNeill's status in the Star Trek fandom would make him a great choice for a Resident Alien cameo .

Resident Alien Season 3's Genius Star Wars Reference Has Huge Implications For Season 4

McNeill wouldn't be the first Star Trek actor to appear in Resident Alien , with George Takei making a voice cameo in three episodes of Resident Alien season 2. With McNeill's main career focus now taking place behind the camera, his most recent role was also a voice cameo - in Star Trek: Lower Decks . Before then, his last live-action acting role came in 2012, when he appeared in a single episode of Chuck .

McNeill has a second character in the Star Trek universe called Nicholas "Nick" Locarno. The shared face of both characters is referenced heavily in Star Trek: Lower Decks .

McNeill's Resident Alien Cameo Would Follow The Actor's Career Trend

The voyager star has appeared in other projects he's directed.

While McNeill isn't currently a member of the Resident Alien cast, his cameo appearances in other projects are a promising sign. For example, he directed four episodes of Star Trek: Voyager - which he also starred in. In addition, he also directed 21 episodes of Chuck , one of which he made an appearance in as an operative. So, McNeill's talents both behind and in front of the camera, paired with his strong association with one of the biggest sci-fi franchises of all time, make him a viable candidate for the next big cameo in Resident Alien .

Resident Alien seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Peacock. Star Trek: Voyager seasons 1-7 are on Paramount+.
