Eric bibb - solo: ridin’ tour.

One of the world’s leading bluesmen of our time, two-time Grammy Award nominee, Eric Bibb will come riding onto Australian shores in 2023. Returning for the Aussie summer, Bibb will perform the classics he is known and loved for, whilst introducing brand new material from his much-anticipated forthcoming album, titled Ridin’, which will be available ahead of its release date exclusively at these shows.

On this February leg of the tour, Bibb fans are in for an intimate treat, as the acoustic blues legend performs solo. Bibb is the ultimate ‘blues brother’. A fiery singer with true soul, his career spans five decades and almost 40 albums. He is known and revered globally for having carved his own musical destiny with honesty and power.

Grounded in the folk/blues tradition with contemporary sensibilities, Bibb’s music continues to reflect his thoughts on current world events, whilst remaining entertaining, uplifting and inspirational. And always relevant. Whether in solo or full band mode, an Eric Bibb show promises to be a remarkable experience, not to be missed. As Blues Brother actor, Dan Aykroyd famously declared to the American born singer, ‘You are what the blues in the new century should be about.’

Acoustic blues legend Eric Bibb to come Ridin' into Oz on his Freedom Train in 2023

Announcement posted by Jameson & Co 04 Oct 2022

eric bibb australian tour 2023

One of the world’s leading bluesmen of our time, two-time Grammy Award nominee, Eric Bibb will come ridin’ onto Australian shores in February and March 2023. Returning for the Aussie summer, Bibb will perform the classics he is known and loved for, whilst introducing brand new material from his much-anticipated forthcoming album, titled Ridin’, which will be available ahead of its release date exclusively at these shows.

On the Ridin’ tour, Bibb fans are in for a double treat, with intimate solo gigs in February before ramping it up with his sensational band in March.

The two month tour will include performances at Port Fairy Folk Festival in Victoria, the Blue Mountains Folk Festival in New South Wales and a slew of metropolitan and regional venues throughout these states, as well as Western Australia, Queensland and one Adelaide show. Always relevant.

Whether in solo or full band mode, an Eric Bibb show promises to be a remarkable experience, not to be missed.

As Blues Brother actor, Dan Aykroyd famously declared to the American born singer, ‘You are what the blues in the new century should be about.’

Eric Bibb’s band during the March leg of his Ridin’ tour will be:

Eric Bibb - Guitar and main vocals

Christer Lyssarides - Guitar

Paul Robinson - Drums

Glen Scott - Bass, keyboards, backing vocals

Eric Bibb Ridin’ is a Roadsong/Laing Entertainment Tour.

About Eric Bibb

How do you measure a person’s life? There are a lot of metrics; success, awards, wealth, to name a few. But there are other ways to leave a legacy. It isn’t always having the right answer for every occasion. What if we evaluated our lives not by the answers we give but by our questions? The deep things we ask ourselves if we are brave enough to try.

Eric Bibb puts those queries to music, singing, “Am I the change I long to see?” It is easy to point to Eric’s accomplishments. A five-decade career recording with folk and blues royalty. Two Grammy nominations and multiple Blues Foundation awards. A following that not only crosses borders, it crosses continents. But what Eric Bibb is after is much, much larger than that. To meet Eric is to be struck by both his humility and his warmth. There is no pretense in him. He is remarkably centred, his convictions based in the values of the civil rights movement of the sixties. Eric’s music works in service of that dream, holding out a hope for a new world. He challenges us to do better, to reach higher, and strive harder. Like Mavis and Pops Staples, he wants to take us there.

Eric carries this mantle honestly. His father, the late Leon Bibb, was an activist, actor, and folk singer who marched at Selma with Dr. Martin Luther King. Eric’s youth was spent immersed in the Village folk scene. Names like Dylan, Baez, and Seeger were visitors to his home. He was deeply influenced by Odetta, Richie Havens, and Taj Mahal. And he has synthesised all of that into his very own style. Eric is an artist who preserves the best traditions of pre-war blues, even while he expands his own oeuvre.

Marketing tags him as a bluesman, but troubadour is the word that best describes him. He slides neatly between genres as he builds bridges with musicians from the UK and Europe, pickers from North America, and Kora players from West Africa. His collaborations with the likes of Michael Jerome Browne, JJ Milteau, Danny Thompson, and Habib Koite have produced music that is both ecstatic and exquisite.

Fortunately for us, Eric shows no signs of slowing down. Prior to the pandemic, he had been touring a stage show he developed entitled Tales of a Blues Brother. The program intersperses photographs and film clips with gripping oral tradition and rapturous song, tracing Eric’s personal journey through the heady days of the sixties folk music and civil rights movements. In one moment he manages to entertain, educate, and motivate us.

Eric provides a grounding in the truth which we desperately need in these days of rancour. A vision we need in a world of divisive rhetoric and veiled allusions to “the other.”

“When I think about my musical journey so far, I’m mostly grateful and amazed at where and who I am today. I also realise how many musical dreams of mine have come true. Listening to my earliest recordings I’m immediately aware of how my voice and guitar playing have evolved. I keep getting closer to the goal, even though the goalposts seem to continually move,” Eric remarked recently. Eric sings of the Freedom Train. He believes it. He lives it. He wants to take us on that ride. Maybe you already have your ticket. But if you haven’t, no need to worry. There’s still time to get on board.

Tickets to see Eric Bibb on his Ridin’ tour in Australia are available now. All licensed venues are 18+, unless accompanied by an adult.

The artist, promoters and venues wish to remind patrons to avoid scam sites such as ViaGogo and only purchase tickets through authorised sites, listed below.

Billy bragg, eric bibb lead 2023 port fairy folk festival lineup.

Port Fairy Folk Festival

The magical four-day festival returns in full-strength in March 2023.

The 2023 Port Fairy Folk Festival might be nine months away, but today the festival has offered up an enticing sample of what’s in store when March rolls around next year, following the success of the beloved festival’s much-anticipated return in 2022.

Returning to the glorious setting of the music-loving coastal village for its 46th edition from 10-13 March, the annual festival will feature a bunch of local and international favourites, with fearless recording artist, tireless live performer and activist Billy Bragg among the first big names announced. The fabled ‘Bard of Barking’ will bring his entertaining and gobsmacking songs, stories and lyrical masterpieces to the world-renowned Folkie stage in this very special performance and tour extension.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne  here .

Joining Bragg, festival-favourites 19-Twenty return to Port Fairy after a show-stopping performance in 2019, bringing with them their infectious riff-and-groove-based blue-billy-grass-rockin’-roots music! Also returning to the Folkie after such a huge crowd response is Irish singer, songwriter and actress Mary Coughlan.

Missing out on his 2022 Australian tour, fans will be thrilled to see Eric Bibb on the lineup with a brand new set of songs to share along with his inspiring back catalogue of hits alongside Nashville-based singer, songwriter and legend Steve Poltz will bring his folk tales and mesmerising lyrics to the Folkie – all set to a  backdrop of the almighty Southern Ocean.

On the local front, Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse, along with the unstoppable Australian band The Waifs, will reign supreme on the Festival grounds, alongside Canadian instrumental trio Inn Echo, and one of the UK’s finest guitarists and songwriters John Smith.

Announcing the first artist line-up, Port Fairy Folk Festival Program Director Justin Rudge said that next year was already shaping up to be bigger and better than ever.

“After the joyous return of the Folkie earlier this year, I am thrilled to reveal the first line-up for what is promising to be a huge festival in 2023. Next year will see the return to a full-strength program, brimming with a diverse range of styles and genres, and featuring the best musical talent from Australia and around the globe. Stay tuned for more artist announcements in the lead-up to our 2023 festival weekend – we can’t wait to share our festival with new and returning Folkies!”

Blues Troubadour Eric Bibb’s Marathon ‘Ridin’’ Tour From Brisbane To Belfast

David Scott

Eric Bibb came ridin’ onto the shores of the popular English seaside resort of Whitley Bay as his extensive tour of Australia, UK and Ireland entered its final stage. The multi award winning blues troubadour has entertained audiences across the world for over half a century, his music as timeless as the man himself. While the tour promotes his latest highly acclaimed Grammy-nominated album, Ridin’ , the concert is a synopsis of Bibb’s illustrious career from the folk music renaissance of Greenwich Village in the 1960s to the present day.

Eric strides onto the stage like a colossus, resplendent in his immaculate suit and trademark hat, greeting the audience with his usual charm and humor before launching into a traditional blues lament from 1941, “Goin’ Down Slow.” The band members are introduced individually, the Canadian roots musician Michael Jerome Browne having already entertained the audience as the support act with classic authentic blues from his fine new album, Getting’ Together. Glen Scott is Eric’s right hand man as musical director, co-writer, record producer, bassist, keyboard player, and any other instrument he can get his hands on. Last but not least, Paul Robinson is one of UK’s top drummers having worked with Paul McCartney, Van Morrison and Nina Simone.

Each song starts with an anecdote, sometimes humorous but often with a serious message, this one telling the story of Bibb’s 1970s move from New York to the unlikely destination of Sweden. Robinson’s steady, mesmeric brush strokes and Scott’s intricate bass lines underpin “Silver Spoon,” Browne’s rolling fingerpicked rhythm complementing Eric’s nimble and intricate guitar work. The pace quickens and the mood darkens with the emotive “Tulsa Town” recounting the massacre of 1921 in the Black Wall Street area where African businesses thrived and 1200 homes were burned and 300 people killed. Bibb’s defiance is evident in the words: “I’m so proud to be a survivor of that brave community/Black Wall Street will thrive again in the twenty first century/On holy ground in Tulsa Town, in Tulsa Town.”

What is already distinctive about this gig and indeed the whole tour are the world class backing musicians at the top of their game in perfect synergy with one of the most accomplished acoustic singer-guitarists of his generation. This combination elevates Bibb’s skilfully crafted lyrics, vocals and guitar playing to an even higher sonic level and broader soundscape than his legendary, virtuosic solo performances.

Eric prefaces a song from his sensational LP Dear America entitled “Along The Way” with the explanation: “I wrote this one for my children, I wanted to tell them stuff that I thought I should have said to them earlier on in the journeys but I was too busy playing.” This is a beautiful, tear-jerking, personal account which evokes a highly emotional response from the audience.

By contrast, the true story of one of Bibb’s ‘blues elders running away from his boss and a lynch mob following an altercation in Mississippi’ is the disturbing theme of “With A Dolla’ In My Pocket.” Bibb is not afraid to tell the stories which have been deleted from historical records even though the truth can be challenging. “With My Maker I Am One” emphasizes the message of unity and that all people are equal in the eyes of a higher power.

The balladic “People You Love” is sung by Bibb with warmth and panache as he reflects upon the transitory, albeit continuous nature of life and beyond. Browne excels once again with his sumptuous slide guitar interpolations.

Ulrika Bibb, a successful solo singer in her own right, joins her husband on stage and adds emotive harmonies to the uplifting “Send Us Brighter Days,” co-written with Malian singer and songwriter Habib Koite. The traditional gospel blues song “500 Miles” brings back memories of the inspirational duet between Eric and his late father Leon Bibb on Family Affair, an unforgettable nostalgic journey which soothes the soul. Eric’s mellifluous vocals are to the fore on the catchy “Come Back Baby” from his seminal 1999 Home To Me acoustic album. “Call Me By My Name” refers to the history of one race belittling another entire race with black military personnel being disrespected by being called ‘boy.’

Ulrika makes a welcome return and the audience claps along enthusiastically to the popular “Needed Time” which Eric learned from fellow bluesman Taj Mahal. “In My Father’s House” showcases Paul’s dynamic stick work in contrast to the master classes in mainly brushes and hand percussion he has presented throughout the evening. “Don’t Ever Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down” is a tour de force courtesy of Glen’s brilliant contributions and the cadence in Bibb’s vocal delivery. The evening reaches its conclusion with unanimous audience demands for an encore, the appropriately titled “Connected” which is about life, the cycle of birth and death, and the connectivity that binds us all together. The lengthy, noisy, enthusiastic standing ovation is thoroughly deserved and a fitting tribute to everyone connected with the show’s production.

Eric Bibb is essentially both a historian and a musician who traces the difficult paths African-Americans took to escape slavery in the 19th century, communicating with passion, courage and dignity what it means to seek freedom and dignity in the present day. He declares that there is no such thing as post-racist America. Aside from social and political issues, Eric also writes poignant lyrics about life, love and every conceivable emotion which he conveys with sensitivity, humility and honesty. It is a privilege to experience an event of such gravitas and joy in equal measures.

Eric Bibb Announces 2024 Australian Tour

By David James Young

American blues and roots singer-songwriter Eric Bibb will return to Australia in May 2024, roughly a year after his last run of dates in the country. The prolific New York-born and Stockholm-based musician is touring in support of his 24th solo album Ridin’ , which he released back in March of this year and was recently nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album.

Bibb’s Australian run will begin at the Blues On Broadbeach festival on the Gold Coast, where he will perform across both days. The tour will conclude a fortnight later in early June, with a performance in the Yarra Valley town of Upwey. Prior to the Australian tour, Bibb will also perform at Auckland’s Tuning Fork and The Piano in Christchurch. A full list of Bibb’s 2024 tour dates can be found below.

Eric Bibb – ‘Blues Funky Like Dat’

Bibb first toured Australia in 2001, in support of his eighth studio album Painting Signs . He performed at that year’s Bluesfest alongside Ben Harper , Midnight Oil , Kasey Chambers and the John Butler Trio . He has returned to Australia on an almost-yearly basis since then, COVID notwithstanding, and recorded a live DVD while on tour here in 2010 entitled Live at The Basement – so named after the famed Sydney jazz venue where the show was filmed.

Eric Bibb Three Time Grammy Nominated Blues Legend

How does one measure a life? Success, awards, and wealth are conventional metrics, but for Eric Bibb the measure goes deeper—into the questions he poses through his music. With a career spanning five decades, over forty albums, three Grammy nominations, a multitude of Blues Foundation awards and countless more accolades, Bibb has secured his legacy as a legendary figure in the blues and roots genre.

Born into a lineage of activism, Eric's father, the late Leon Bibb, was a key figure in the civil rights movement, marching alongside Dr. Martin Luther King. Immersed in the Village folk scene during his youth, Eric found inspiration in the visits of luminaries like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Pete Seeger. Influenced deeply by the sounds of Odetta, Richie Havens, and Taj Mahal, he synthesized these elements into a style uniquely his own.

Beyond conventional genres, Bibb is labeled a bluesman, but he defies categorization, seamlessly sliding between musical realms. Grounded in the folk and blues tradition with contemporary sensibilities, Bibb’s music reflects his thoughts on current world events and his own lived experiences, whilst remaining entertaining, uplifting, inspirational and relevant.

Bibb’s catalogue is now over 40 albums strong, with his ethos exemplified in 2023’s Grammy nominated Ridin’ , which drew inspiration from the painting "A Ride for Liberty" by Eastman Johnson, depicting a Black family fleeing enslavement during the Civil War.

" Am I the change I long to see? " Bibb asks through his music.

As Eric reflects on his musical journey, gratitude pervades. Evolution is evident in his voice and guitar playing, with his words providing grounding in truth and fostering a vision of unity amid a world filled with divisive rhetoric. Eric Bibb is more than a blues troubadour; he is a storyteller and philosopher. His legacy is not just in the notes he plays or the stages he graces but in the questions he poses and the hope he instills.
