Majestic monuments, splendid scenery, and three charismatic cities combine to create this enchanting Austrian tour; visiting Vienna’s palaces and Danube promenades, sailing on one of Salzburg’s serenely lovely lakes, and exploring Innsbruck’s intriguing Old Town

With a greater diversity of landscapes, history and heritage than one would expect in a small, landlocked country, Austria enthrals and entertains in equal measure. Enthralling for its breathtaking scenery of soaring mountains and verdant valleys; and for its mesmerising city streets, buzzing with contemporary life, at the foot of façades several centuries old. Entertaining with the remarkable repertoires of its most famous sons, Mozart and Strauss, operettas by Austro-Hungarian Lehár, and the classical compositions of Beethoven, who made Vienna his adoptive home. The journey begins in the capital, a place of grace and grandeur, parks, palaces, and chic shops; where we view the regal squares, historic churches, and iconic landmarks in the city and its surrounds. In Salzburg, Baroque and medieval buildings line the lanes of the UNESCO listed old town, where Mozart’s birthplace is now a museum of his childhood. Innsbruck, the capital of the Tirol, has an air of exuberance and a list of attractions which ranges from the Olympic ski-jump to the Habsburg Imperial Palace, and 995ft rise of the Hungerburg funicular. A river runs through each of the cities, the Danube, Salzach and Sill (respectively) adding a natural soundtrack.

A brief introduction to Austria

Austria (German: Österreich), is a landlocked country in Central Europe. The name "Ostarrichi" is first mentioned in an official document from 996. Austria is a largely mountainous country due to its location in the Alps. The capital of Austria is the city of Vienna. As a federal republic, Austria is divided into nine federal states. It's best to enjoy Austria's federal areas by spending time in each one. To save money on your accommodation, consider timeshares instead of hotels. That way you can spend your money on tours instead of hotels. Austria also boasts one of the longest ruling royal dynasties recorded, over six centuries of rule. Perhaps you'd like to study the architecture left behind by the Hapsburg dynasty. Or maybe you'd like to ski down the slopes of Zell am See or go swimming in the warm Wörthersee Lake. With timeshare rentals you can enjoy all the areas of Austria at your own pace.

Relax on our comfortable bus while we drive to Salzburg. On the journey you will get the first impression of the beauty of the Salzkammergut countryside with its clear lakes and majestic mountains.

Guided tour Salzburg

On a guided walk through the historical centre of Salzburg, we show you the most popular tourist attractions. One of the famous scenes of "The Sound of Music" was filmed in the gardens of the Mirabell Palace. It was here that Maria sang, together with the children, the song “Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So” at the fountain and on the steps. Aswell you will see the horse pond and the riding school where Baron Trapp sang the “Edelweiß song” as a farewell. A real highlight of our city trip to Salzburg is the Getreidegasse, the street where the birthplace of Mozart is located. This narrow street still reminds us of the 18th century. Other tourist attractions on our sightseeing tour: University Church, St. Peter’s Abbey, the Salzburg Cathedral and the Festival Hall. You have some time at your disposal to explore the city, eat lunch or shop for souvenirs until our departure at 4 p.m. Estimated arrival time in Vienna is around 8:00 p.m.

The hiking tour was very good with all hotel reservations and baggage transfers handled smoothly. There were a few times the detailed hiking instructions did not match that actual situation, ie, bus stops not where they were indicated on the detail and in one case, the detailed instructions were not for the correct hike. We were able to figure things out, though, and had a wonderful vacation. A big drawback, in my opinion, is with the insurance provider. My initial trip was for 3 people and one got injured in June and had to drop out. I issued a claim right away and, 2 months later, have still not heard one word from them! I realize you don't deal with the insurance end, but if this is who you are going to have as your sister company, I would probably not buy another trip from you.

Our greatest difficulty was with the route notes that often did not match with the signage along the way. At times, we were very confused and reluctant to proceed without finding local people to confirm the route. You dont want to be at the wrong elevation, far out of the way, late in the day and on tired legs. We have done these hiking tours using a number of different companies, but this is the most trouble we have had following confusing directions. A GPS overlay is easily available technology, and should be provided as a matter of safety.....

The tour was perfect, the tour guide was very clear and informative and talented. One request for improvement is that while the pick-up from hotel was very convenient, we were told that there is no drop back to hotel included. It was disheartening since we were tired and wanted to reach hotel quickly.

Europe Christmas Markets: Munich to Budapest Tour

Europe Christmas Markets: Munich to Budapest

This trip was great! We met in Munich - 3 Aussies, 2 Americans and Tajna, our tour leader. An orientation walk and a dinner at a beer hall got us started. Tajna is confident, reliable, approachable, understanding and flexible. All of which were excellent qualities for this trip. She took us to multiple Christmas markets and offered suggestions for even more. After Munich came Saltzburg where we also got a Sound of Music tour and a trip through a salt mine in addition to amazing Christmas markets. Then on to Vienna - my favorite place in the trip. Great markets, wonderful food and drink, beautiful city. We ended in Budapest where the rain drove me into the thermal baths for the day. Not a bad way to suffer on a cold rainy day

Vienna to Bratislava by bike (and back) Tour

Vienna to Bratislava by bike (and back)

We had a great tour but the first day was too long cycling through areas where there were no refreshment options & it was very hot. If we could have had regular stops that would have been more manageable. The cycle track network is excellent & safe. We spent less time by the Danube than anticipated. We did a bus our to make the most of our limited time in Vienna & loved having time to explore Bratislava - much cheaper & more edgy! The bikes were good although one did not have a water bottle carrier which is a must in such hot weather. The hotels were good for what we needed. The BEST breakfast was at the Fruhstick Penion Maria - fabulous! The receptionist at the first stop hotel in Bruck is in the wrong job - she was unhelpful. On our return to the Hotel Ibis we encountered an unpleasant chap who had a real issue with where we left the bikes for collection - we had no such problems when we stayed there - at the beginning of the tour & collected the bikes - again he seemed to have a problem with working in hospitality! Support from Martina was excellent throughout - nothing was too much trouble. The luggage transfers worked seamlessly. Thank you for a memorable trip.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Austria

The hotel was lovely in a beautiful setting. The breakfast was fantastic! My room was far from reception and unfortunately did not have a kettle! However, I could see the lake from the dormer window on my top floor. Reception was helpful. No evening meal available so I ordered a delivery online which was tasty! The Sound of Music tour was very interesting and worthwhile. I didn't expect to have to make my own way back to the hotel, but it was overall a good experience. Quite a large crowd in a big comfortable bus.

Daily Itinerary

Day 1 – salzburg.

Arrive on your own in your comfortable hotel in Salzburg and use the afternoon to stroll around in the delightful “Sound of Music City”. We hope you arrive at least one day early to explore this wonderful walking city with its many little passageways and courtyards in the cozy medieval center. The most famous street in this part of Salzburg is, of course, the Getreidegasse, well known for its old-style hanging shop signs and Mozart’s birthplace at number 9. A few steps away is the “City of the Bishops’, a more grandiose Salzburg with the magnificent Cathedral and former residence of the Archbishop. The Mirabell Palace and Gardens are a delightful place of great beauty not to be missed. Also especially recommended is the Hohensalzburg Fortress, Salzburg’s landmark and the largest citadel in Central Europe to have completely survived. The panoramic view over the city from here is spectacular.

DAY 2 – Salzburg - Burghausen - 37 miles (60 km)

You’ll leave the festival city of Salzburg and take the path along the bank of the Salzach to tranquil and quaint Oberndorf. It was here that the Christmas carol “Silent Night” was written in 1818 and you might visit the charming, little “Silent Night Chapel.” In the afternoon you’ll reach Burghausen, with the most expansive castle buildings in Europe. A visit to the impressive fortress will acquaint you with the history and development of the town and castle.

DAY 3 – Burghausen - Schärding - 43 miles (70 km)

Today you’ll cycle through the “Unterer Inn” Nature Preserve, the largest wooded region of the Inn District and stop at the Inn-Salzach View, where the Salzach flows into the Inn. You then pass through lively Braunau where you can stop for coffee and a walk around to admire the central square and clock tower. Then you’ll cycle on through beautiful open farmland to Obernberg, a thousand-year-old town with an extremely beautiful market square. From here it is another 18 km to the beautiful Baroque town of Schärding where you’ll stay for the night. After dinner we recommend a stroll around in this charming little town with the “most beautiful baroque town square in all of Austria”.

DAY 4 – Schärding - Passau - Schlögen - 37 miles (60 km)

You’ll pedal along the peaceful River Inn and cross for a short time into Germany to Passau, once a prestigious and wealthy center of Roman Catholicism. The Inn and the Ilz flow into the Danube at Passau which is why the city is also called the “Three Rivers Town”. On its impressive Market Square you’ll find St. Stephan Cathedral containing the largest church organ in Europe. Here you can attend the noon time organ concert (daily except on Sundays), quite an exciting experience. After lunch bike on to your comfortable hotel in Schlögen, close to the famous meander in the Danube River.

DAY 5 – Schlögen - Linz - 32 miles (51 km)

Today you continue over an easy path along the river and later on small country roads through lush countryside. You can stop for lunch in picturesque Ottensheim. In the early afternoon you’ll reach Linz, the capital of Upper Austria and Austria’s third largest city. It was here in 1783 that Mozart wrote one of his most beautiful symphonies, the Linz Symphony, which he dedicated to the city. Mozart resided in the house of Count Thun during his Linz engagements and ever since the Thun Mansion has been known as “Mozart Haus”. You can visit it today! Also Anton Bruckner, a great Austrian composer of church music, was closely associated with Linz. For 12 years he was the resident-organist at the magnificent baroque cathedral. Each September Linz holds its most important music festival, the Bruckner Festival dedicated to its namesake. You’ll have time for a delightful stroll in the handsome center of Linz before or after a tasty meal in one of its many fine restaurants. You should remember to try the delicious pastry – the Linzer Torte and check out a lively Austrian Beergarten in the evening!

DAY 6 – Linz – Grein/Ardagger – 37-42 miles (59-67 km)

Today you’ll bike from Linz along the Danube to Mauthausen, now a friendly village but once the site of a WWII concentration camp or Enns, the oldest town of Austria. Via Ardagger you’ll cycle on through the fertile Machland region to the old barge town Grein, where you’ll find a wonderful castle from the 15th century and the oldest (1791) theater in Austria, still in use today. You can visit the Grein Castle and the small theatre and marvel that Napoleon sat in one of the same seats long ago!

DAY 7 – Grein/Ardagger – Melk/Emmersdorf – 34-38 miles (54-62 km)

Today you’ll take a peaceful, romantic ride through the relaxing countryside along the Donau, passing though tiny Austrian villages. Shortly after Marbach you’ll pass by the Maria Taferl, for centuries a Christian pilgrimage destination, located on a rugged hilltop on the other side of the river. You’ll bike on to Pochlarn where you could stop at a nice café for lunch. Then on to ancient Melk on the Danube River, the beginning of the Wachau Valley. Here you can visit the incredible Benedictine Monastery, the Stift Melk, founded in 1089 high above the river. It was rebuilt between 1702 and 1726 in splendid high baroque style. Melk is the entrance to the most popular part of the Danube Region, the Wachau, well known for its delicious white wines.

DAY 8 – Melk/Emmersdorf – Krems - Vienna - 22 miles (36 km) + 2-hour train ride

Today cycle through the impressive Wachau region, a scenic stretch of winding river and vine-covered hillsides in lower Austria. Small winding village streets with flower-covered houses make this a photographer’s delight. The area is well known for its choice wines. The route takes you through Spits and Weissenkirchen and the best known town in the Wachau, Dürnstein. It has a ruined castle where Richard the Lionhearted was imprisoned in the 12th century. After reaching Krems, stroll through the renovated section, now a pedestrian zone, with its 17th century pastel houses. In Krems you’ll drop off your bicycle and travel for two hours to Vienna by train.

DAY 9 – Tour Ends

The tour ends in Vienna after breakfast.

Linderhof Palace

escorted tours to vienna and salzburg

Stop by King Ludwig II's smallest palace on your way to Neuschwanstein and explore its delightful gardens.

Another of the eccentric (some say mad) King Ludwig II's creations is Linderhof Palace, which with its fantastic grotto and Moorish pavilion testifies to the king's vision. The smallest of his three palaces that he built, it is the only one that he lived to see completed. The palace is in between Munich and Neuschwanstein, meaning many tours stop there along the way.

Mary's Bridge

Enjoy a stunning view of the castle while suspended over a mountainous gorge.

You definitely won't want to miss taking in the best views and photographs of Neuschwanstein from Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge) over the dramatic Pöllat Gorge. The minibus terminal is very close at just 5 min walk away, while it's a steepish 10-15min climb on a wide and well-groomed path to get there from behind the castle. As noted above, Mary's Bridge can get a little crowded, so you might have to wait for a gap before you can fit on.

Karlskirche

Many argue that this baroque church is as beautiful as St. Peter's - see it and decide for yourself.

Built between 1716-1737, Emperor Charles VI intended the church to be a thanksgiving for the end of a plague epidemic and dedicated the church to St. Charles Borromeo, who is revered for his care of plague victims. St. Charles was also his namesake, meaning that the church's name evokes the emperor's memory as much as the saint's, which was no accident. Indeed, the two columns in front of the church are meant to represent imperial power.

Charles Bridge

Cross the river dividing Prague's most historic neighborhoods, and experience one of Europe's most iconic landmarks.

Bridge construction began in 1357 under King Charles IV (hence the name), and it was the only bridge across the Vltava River until 1841. 30 baroque statues of saints line the bridge, and it is filled with street artists and entertainers. Not to be missed.

Maltese Square & Lennon Wall

See a historic wall that has been covered in John Lennon-inspired graffiti since Communist days.

The wall has been covered in graffiti since the 1960s, and during Communism anti-regime sentiment was common. John Lennon's assassination inspired grafitti reflecting his song, Imagine, which earned the wall its current moniker. It is now a favorite gathering place for tourists, and musicians sometimes congregate there as well. Just around the corner is the Maltese Square, which is one of Prague's more quaint and relaxed public spaces, despite being just off the main tourist route.

Old-New Synagogue

See the oldest surviving synagogue in Europe and also one of Prague's earliest Gothic buildings.

Old Jewish Cemetery

Take an unforgettable visit to one of Europe's largest medieval Jewish cemeteries.

As the Jewish Ghetto was quite cramped, there was no room to expand the cemetery. Gravestones are packed in tightly and in some areas the burials reach 12 layers!

Sedlec Ossuary

Confront your own mortality in the crypt of a small Gothic church decorated with garlands of human skulls, plus a bone chandelier & chalices.

As macabre as it might appear, one cannot help but admire the imaginative ways in which thousands of human bones have been put to decorative use. There's everything from huge pyramids of skulls, to a chandelier to an aristocratic coat of arms composed of the remains of those who sought their final resting place in Sedlec. It’s a breath-taking reminder of the medieval practice of reflecting on mortality, summed up in the Latin expression ‘Memento mori’ or ‘remember you must die’.

Church of Our Lady before Týn old town prague czech republic

The city of Prague is indisputably the gem of Central Europe. Full of history, culture, and classic Czech pubs around every corner, Prague is teeming with nooks and crannies just waiting to be discovered. The narrow cobblestone streets and warm red rooftops give the city a homey feel, while the well-preserved medieval architecture transports you back in time. Walking across the Charles Bridge with the view of the Prague Castle will make you feel like you’re living in a fairytale, and you might as well be.    As an up-and-coming destination, Prague is a perfect mix of classic and modern. New trendy cafes and bistros are always popping up, and you can always find a group of lively locals chowing down on goulash and quaffing pivo (the best beer in Europe!) at traditional Czech restaurants across the city. The clash of modernity and tradition, preservation and innovation, gives this city a mysterious air that you won’t soon forget.

half timbered houses in nuremberg germany

One of the most authentic, storied German destinations, Nuremberg's picturesque old town, glorious castle, and buzzing Christmas Market makes this city a time-true classic. The ideal gateway to old Bavaria, Nuremberg offers a primer in German history before you embark on the lovely journey through old Bavaria, known as the Romantic Road. Considered the capital of the Holy Roman Empire in the middle ages, Nuremberg would have felt like the center of the world as a procession of kings and emperors passed through its magnificent gates. When the German Renaissance came, Nuremberg was at its heart. Albrecht Dürer, the great German master artist, was born here, and Martin Luther called Nuremberg Germany's 'eyes and ears'. Skip forward a few centuries, and the city took a dark turn, as Nuremberg became a gathering point for the German National Socialists. Slightly outside of town, you can still find the Nazi Party Rallying Grounds, a sobering reminder of the not so distant past. If it all gets too heavy, you can end the day with a glass of rotbier (red beer) and mull it over. Nuremberg is a must-see for anyone who wants to delve into Germany's past.

Skyscrapers and an old church at sunset in Frankfurt

Dubbed ‘Mainhatten’ for its glass highrises, financial prowess, and proximity to the Main River, Frankfurt offers a fascinating glimpse into the ‘engine room’ of Europe’s economy with an unexpected twist. Among the glass and steel buildings, the old-worldly Römerberg square will give you a double-take. The square’s 15th-century half-timbered houses, old statues, and church spires contrast dramatically against the modern 21st-century skyscrapers beyond. If you visit at Christmas, the Römerberg is truly special, aglow with the light of the tallest Christmas tree in Germany. The square fills with stalls selling handicrafts, and the air is scented with hot apple wine, honey, and cinnamon.  Delve deeper into Frankfurt and you’ll find a substantial museum district, the Museumsufer (Museum Embankment). This area features a cluster of twelve museums on either side of Main River. This includes the Städel, home to Tischbein’s famous painting of renowned writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of Frankfurt’s most prestigious sons. The more time you spend in Frankfurt, the more you’ll discover a highly cultured city lurking beneath its glass facades. If you have the time, Frankfurt is certainly worth a second look.

old town square munich germany

Arriving in Munich, you would be forgiven for thinking you were on the set of a movie about old Bavaria. At the Old Town beer halls, barmaids laced in dirndl dresses serve up frosty Helles lager, as oom-pah music drifts across the Marienplatz square. Men in lederhosen and checked shirts merrily give toasts as they knock glasses, or steins, as they’re known here. They sit at tables laden with wurst sausage and giant pretzels oozing with herby butter. This is Germany’s Germany, a place where folk traditions never stopped, and the revelry doesn’t either. Even when it isn’t Oktoberfest, the town’s notorious beer-drinking celebration, Munich is always happy to show you a good time. Simply cast your eyes around the lavish, gilded banquet hall at the Munich Residenz, the 13th-century Wittelsbach palace. You’ll see Munich has been impressing guests for centuries. Or, swing by the BMW Museum and check out the classic German cars. They even let you sit inside to test out the new models. At the city’s English Gardens, surfers ride waves on one of the park’s rivers. Munich is filled to the brim with this kind of pure-hearted German fun.

winter in salzburg germany

You've probably heard this before— the city of Salzburg is straight out of a fairytale. Nestled in the mountains, this romantic city's Baroque architecture with colorful domes and spires is especially striking against the ancient fortress and Austrian Alpine backdrop. If you're looking for an amazing view, climb up to Hohensalzburg Fortress, Central Europe's largest intact fortress, for a jaw-dropping panorama of the city backed by misty mountains. Perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of the renowned composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the filming location for the classic The Sound of Music, this city has much to offer. Salzburg has become an important artistic and cultural center, featuring magnificent concert halls that uphold the city's tradition of classical music every day of the year, as well as acclaimed art exhibitions and museums. If you do it right, your visit to Salzburg will immerse you in the city's unforgettable atmosphere and keep you coming back for more.

winter Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna austria

Artistic and musical, historical and elegant, Vienna is the definition of class. The seat of the Habsburg monarchy for over six centuries, it's no wonder this city is still fit for royalty. Baroque buildings and imperial palaces dominate the cityscape, while locals stride gracefully through the streets, likely on their way to a classical music concert or art exhibition. Visitors from all over the world flock to Schonbrunn Palace, historical museums, and local eateries for authentic Viennese schnitzel.  Vienna is also home to world-class wining and dining. Famous dishes include Wiener schnitzel, Tafelspitz (prime boiled beef), and apfelstrudel (apple strudel), all of which pair well with a glass of fine Austrian wine. No matter how long you spend in Vienna, you'll leave with a new appreciation for the finer things in life.
