If you’re visiting the Big Apple and you’re on a budget, don’t worry, because there are free walking tours in NYC that help you discover the most famous places in the city. Plus, you’ll get insider tips that only the locals know about, all without breaking the bank.

We’ve spent lots of time in New York since we lived for five years just two hours from the city. We also quickly realized that we could explore different parts of the city without spending too much money.

If you don’t have much time to get out and see the most popular places in NYC , or if you’re traveling on a budget, this guide will give you several free walking tours in New York City . So, depending on how long you’ll be in the city, you can take one or more and get to know different areas of the Big Apple.

In a nutshell, these are the free tours in New York that I recommend:

1. The best free walking tour in New York City

A free tour of New York is one of the best ways to introduce yourself to the Big Apple’s main attractions. With this tour , you’ll visit the most famous NYC landmarks, so it’s a great tour to take on your first day in the city, especially if you are planning a 3-day trip to NYC . For me is a must-do walking tour in NYC.

This free Manhattan walking tour begins in the Financial District, where you’ll pass Wall Street , the New York Stock Exchange , the Fearless Girl sculpture, and the Charging Bull statue at Bowling Green. You’ll also walk by the World Trade Center and Ground Zero, the former site of the Twin Towers. Check out the 9/11 Memorial, a poignant reminder of one of the city’s most historic and tragic events.

Afterward, you’ll visit Battery Park , one of the best spots to see the Statue of Liberty . In addition, you’ll pass through the old town of New Amsterdam, where the last remaining Dutch-style houses are located. Overall, this is a basic tour, but perfect if it’s your first time in NYC.

• Highlights : Wall Street, World Trade Center, 9/11 Memorial, Battery Park
• Meeting point : In front of Bowling Green
• Duration : 2 hrs, 30 mins
• Description : This basic free walking tour of NYC takes you to some of the most iconic places in the city, such as Wall Street, the World Trade Center, the 9/11 Memorial, and Battery Park, where you can see the Statue of Liberty .

2. Brooklyn Bridge & DUMBO walking tour

When you go to New York City, one of the things you must do is cross the Brooklyn Bridge , the most popular bridge in NYC . Fortunately, several free tours in New York take you across this iconic landmark, and you can learn interesting facts and anecdotes about the bridge from a local guide. In particular, I recommend this tour , which crosses Brooklyn Bridge and takes you through the DUMBO neighborhood , one of the best things to do in Brooklyn .

As you walk across the bridge, you’ll get lovely panoramic views of the New York skyline, so have your camera ready! Then, check out the modern neighborhood of DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). Here, you’ll find alternative boutiques, luxury restaurants, and hip cafes, which is why it’s one of the most popular places in NYC.

This is another free on-foot tour of New York that I recommend, although since COVID began, the tour company has been charging a minimum fee of $25 per person to keep group sizes small.

• Highlights : Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO
• Meeting point : World Trade Center
• Description : This guided tour takes you across the Brooklyn Bridge, where you’ll get beautiful views of the New York skyline and cross over into DUMBO, one of the most modern neighborhoods in the city .

3. SoHo, Little Italy & Chinatown, another NYC free walking tour

New York is full of interesting communities and neighborhoods, and this tour goes to SoHo, Little Italy, and Chinatown, three distinct parts of the Big Apple you can’t miss.

You’ll start with a walk through SoHo , one of the most expensive and artsy neighborhoods in Manhattan . Among the galleries, shops, and bakeries, you’ll also see impressive architecture, like the Haughwout Building, a five-story commercial loft.

Then, you’ll continue the tour by visiting Little Italy , an area with amazing food and rich Italian heritage. Your guide will tell you about Little Italy’s immigrant history and take you to the most famous eateries on Mulberry Street, where you can sample local cuisine like cannoli or cheesecake.

Finally, you’ll end up in Chinatown , stopping first at the Mahayana Buddhist Temple, home to a 16-foot Buddha statue. Then, visit the Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory and walk down historic Doyer Street, one of the most famous streets in New York City , where you’ll see the notorious Five Points landmark and try traditional Asian dumplings.

Like the previous tour, this free walking tour in NYC now charges a minimum fee of $35 per person to keep the group to 10 people or less and adhere to COVID regulations.

• Highlights : SoHo, Little Italy, and Chinatown
• Meeting point : Duarte Square
• Duration : 2 hrs
• Description : This tour includes a walk through the artsy SoHo neighborhood, a visit to the local shops in Little Italy, and a look at the historic landmarks in Chinatown .

4. Central Park, NYC free walking tour

There are tons of great things to do in Central Park , one of which is a free NYC walking tour . I suggest doing this tour , which is led by a former Central Park employee who will share their favorite spots.

During the tour, you’ll learn about the history of the park and how it has changed over the decades. You’ll also pass by lots of famous movie and TV locations and see the park’s different landscape features like the Great Lawn , the Sheep Meadow , and The Ramble .

Get lovely views of The Lake from Bethesda Terrace , pass by Wollman Rink , and take a stroll along the Mall and Literary Walk . Your group will also visit Conservatory Water , a scenic pond with beautiful bronze statues, including Alice in Wonderland . You’ll want to bring your camera to capture gorgeous photos of landmarks like the Gapstow Bridge , the Bow Bridge , and Strawberry Fields , the John Lennon Memorial.

Since COVID began, this guided tour has a minimum fee of $25 per person, but it’s well worth the price!

• Highlights : Central Park
• Meeting point : 2 Columbus Circle
• Description : This guided tour is a wonderful way to see Central Park’s top attractions in a short timeframe. Check out sights like Wollman Rink, the Alice in Wonderland statue, Conservatory Water, Strawberry Fields, the Gapstow Bridge, The Lake, and Bethesda Terrace .

5. Broadway & Times Square, another free NYC tour

Broadway is one of the most iconic places to visit in New York, and if you’re a theater lover, this guided tour is for you. It’s led by a Broadway actor, so not only will you see famous landmarks, but you’ll also hear captivating insights and stories from an insider.

As you make your way through the Theatre District, you’ll walk along 42 nd Street and learn about New York’s show biz history. You’ll also pass Shubert Alley , the oldest gift shop on Broadway; the Edison Hotel , a vintage Art Deco hotel; and the George M. Cohan statue , named after the famous American singer, dancer, actor, and producer.

Your guide will also take you through Hell’s Kitchen and past the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin , or “Smokey Mary’s” church, which is known for its heavy use of incense. Then, make your way to Times Square , which was originally a horse-trading district, and pass by TV recording studios for The Tonight Show and SNL , among others.

This walking tour in NYC was free , but right now it costs $39 per person to adhere to COVID regulations and keep groups small.

• Highlights : Broadway and Times Square
• Meeting point : Dufy Square
• Duration : 1 hr, 45 mins – 2 hrs
• Description : This tour is led by a Broadway actor who will share interesting tidbits and stories about NYC’s Theatre District. Walk along 42 nd Street and pass by iconic sites like Shubert Alley, Smokey Mary’s church, the Edison Hotel, and the George H. Cohan statue .

6. Greenwich Village walking tour

Last but not least, Greenwich Village is an awesome hub for NYC’s counterculture that you must see. My recommendation is to do this 2-hour tour , which takes you to the most historic areas in Greenwich Village.

For example, this neighborhood was popular with artists, writers, and musicians, attracting legends like Jimi Hendrix, Edgar Allan Poe, and Jackson Pollack. During this free walking tour in NYC , you’ll see Jones Street , which was featured on Dylan’s album, The Freewheeling Bob Dylan , as well as Café Society , the first integrated club in NYC.

Other highlights on this tour include the Friends Apartment ; Cherry Lane Theater , the oldest off-Broadway theater in New York; and the Isaacs-Hendricks House, home to a renowned merchant family. You’ll also see the Stonewall Inn , the site of the 1969 Stonewall Riots that sparked the LGBTQ+ movement.

As you walk through Greenwich Village, you’ll see remnants of its bohemian vibe and gay rights history, as well as some of the most beautiful areas of Manhattan, like New York University and Washington Square Park , one of the best parks in NYC .

Like the other free tours in New York , this one now charges a fee ($35/person).

• Highlights : Greenwich Village and Washington Square Park
• Meeting point : Waverly Place & 6 th Avenue
• Description : This counterculture tour takes you through Greenwich Village, a historic bohemian neighborhood. Start at New York University and head to Washington Square Park, passing interesting sites along the way like Cherry Lane Theater, the Friends Apartment, and Stonewall Inn.

My experience with NYC’s free walking tours

Without a doubt, these free walking tours in NYC are one of the best free things to do in New York City . For five years, we lived just two hours from the Big Apple, so we’ve visited this place lots of times and have done several of these tours.

On our first visit, we did the basic tour to get an introduction to the city. We loved it so much that we decided to book another free New York tour , this time in Spanish, through Midtown Manhattan. At that time, there were more free walking tours in NYC , but most of them cost money now. That said, the price is about the same amount we’d leave as a tip, so we didn’t mind the added fee.

When COVID-19 allowed us to safely travel again, we took a tour through Chinatown and Little Italy, like this one , and the Central Park tour , both of which charge a minimal fee now. Despite having walked through Central Park plenty of times, we discovered so much about this landmark thanks to our guide, Sarah. We wouldn’t have gotten that experience without her, so we loved it!

Also, the cost of these tours ends up being more or less the same whether you pay when making the reservation online, or at the end of the tour as a tip, so either way, they’re totally worth it.

What should you tip for a free walking tour of NYC?

Even when there were more free tours in New York , it was still expected that you would leave a tip for the guide at the end. These knowledgeable tour guides work hard and do their best to provide an awesome experience (and they do!) so they deserve to be compensated.

We recommend tipping at least $20 per person, although we liked our tours so much that we ended up paying $30 ($60 for we two) for two of the free NYC walking tours we did. The only one we didn’t leave a tip for was the one in Central Park since we had already paid when making the reservation. However, some people in our group did leave a tip at the end of the tour because our guide, Sarah, did a phenomenal job. Honestly, if we had had some spare change at the time, we would’ve tipped, too.

For other paid tours that we’ve done, we’ve left $10 tips. So, even though some tours are advertised as free NYC tours , many guides rely on the tips, so I recommend giving an amount that works for you and that fairly compensates the guide for their hard work.

While well worth the price tag, hitting all of New York City's neighborhoods, sights and eateries can put a serious strain on your wallet. But travelers and locals on a budget don't have to stay away from the great outings offered by NYC tour operators. Many are completely free or tip-based, which means you can save that pocket change for one of  the City's best pizza slices  or for cab fare home after  a night on the town . And you thought nothing was free nowadays.

Battery Park City Parks Conservancy

Battery Park City  encompasses 36 acres of playgrounds, gardens and plazas. Every day, people flock to the space for outdoor fun or, in winter, indoor activities—the parks host fitness programs, art exhibitions and hundred of other happenings each year—but to get the most out of this cluster of green spaces, a free tour or two is in order. Typical offerings include organic-gardening walks around  Wagner Park , public-art explanations at Teardrop Park and bird-watching excursions around the area (binoculars included). Tours change throughout the year and information generally doesn't become available until April, so check  bpcparks.org  (the conservancy's site) for the most up-to-date information. 

Big Apple Greeter

Get a warm New York City welcome from Big Apple Greeter 's team of volunteers (many of whom are multilingual) as they guide you through the City's diverse neighborhoods. You can sign up to request the type of excursion you'd like—the form asks what neighborhoods tickle your fancy and what you're interests are—and you'll be matched up (availability willing) with a local greeter. You might be led on an outing around, say, TriBeCa's Hudson Square, with its industrial buildings and cobblestone streets; or along the  Grand Concourse  in the Bronx, peering at art deco gems; or to sample the food of your favorite ethnic cuisine. The company's 300 greeters collectively own extensive knowledge of the City and its best spots.

Brooklyn Brewery and SingleCut Beersmiths

Choose a borough in which to learn about suds-making. Brooklyn Brewery hosts free tours on Saturdays (between 1230-6p) and Sundays (from 1230-4p). Note that those under 21 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Afterward, grab a seat at one of the indoor picnic tables and (if you're of age, of course) purchase beer tokens to sample some of the brewery's wildly popular creations, like Brooklyn Lager, Brooklyn East IPA and various seasonal quaffs. In Queens,  SingleCut offers a somewhat informal tour of its facilities on Sundays at 5pm. Repair afterward to the tap room—or start there, and buy a beer to have in hand while you check out the brewing process.

Central Park Conservancy

Central Park has 80 acres of woodland, 250 acres of lawns and 150 acres of water; trying to see it all without an expert tour guide can be overwhelming. The Central Park Conservancy 's long lineup of free tours aims to cover it all (note: the organization also offers a series of ticketed tours focusing on things like "iconic views" and  Belvedere Castle ). See the most famous attractions, such as  Bethesda Terrace and Fountain  and  Conservatory Water , on the Heart of the Park tour; visit somewhat lesser-known sights like the  Harlem Meer  on the Northern Welcome tour; or check out European-style plantings during walks around the nearly 80-year-old  Conservatory Garden . Offerings change seasonally.

Flatiron District

The Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership sponsors free weekly walking tours of the historic Flatiron District. A professional tour guide takes visitors on a 90-minute walking tour in and around this Manhattan neighborhood, with stops at sights like the MetLife Clock Tower, the New York Life Insurance Building and, of course, the famed Flatiron Building on 23rd Street. The tours meet up Sundays at 11am, at the southwest corner of Madison Square Park located at 23rd Street and Broadway.

Grand Central Partnership

See why the neighborhood surrounding Grand Central Terminal is so much more than a transportation hub. Every Friday at 12:30pm, the Grand Central Partnership conducts a 90-minute guided walking tour led by an urban historian. Make stops at the station's Whispering Gallery, discover the secrets of the passageways, gaze at the architectural splendor of the  Chrysler Building  and visit  Pershing Square  and the original Lincoln Memorial, among other notable Midtown locales. 

High Line Tour

From May through October, the Friends of The High Line offer free tours twice a week of this former rail line that has become one of the most famous public parks in the world. These walks, which take a little over an hour, meet on the High Line at the Gansevoort Street entrance Tuesdays at 5:30pm and Saturdays at 10am. It is suggested that you arrive 15 minutes before the start time as they have limited space; note that the tours may be canceled due to inclement weather.

New York Public Library

The  main branch of the NYPL offers free tours of the landmarked Stephen A. Schwarzman building, located on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. The tours start promptly at 11am and 2pm, Monday through Saturday, and are on a first-come, first-served basis (with a limit of 25 guests). The tours meet at the reception desk located just inside the main entrance, in the library's Astor Hall.

Sandemans , which offers free tours in major cities around the world, has many free walking tours available in NYC. One of their more popular ones explores Lower Manhattan, taking you on a journey from where New York began right up to the current day. NYC for Free: Free Boat Ride, Museums, and Walking Tours

Whether you are solo visiting New York City on a budget, are looking for free things for families to do, are enjoying a visit with friends or are on a couple's getawau, there are some excellent opportunities to enjoy some of the best of New York City without spending a dime.

You'll want to see NYC from the water, taken in a few museums, and go on a walking tour to learn more about New York City's iconic neighborhoods.

Free NYC Boat Rides

The Staten Island Ferry is rumored to be "the cheapest date around." A cruise on the Staten Island Ferry will cost you nothing as you enjoy the hour-long round-trip from Battery Park (South Ferry Subway station) to the borough of Staten Island. During the trip you can experience some of the same fabulous views that the pricier trips offer, including the skyscrapers and bridges of lower Manhattan, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty .

Check out the weekday or weekend schedules for the ferry and plan your free cruise. A couple of things to note: 1) you will have to get off the boat in Staten Island and get back on, even if you just want to ride back and forth and 2) the sightseeing cruises get much closer to the Statue of Liberty (& include time for a photo-op with the Statue of Liberty behind you) but since this is a commuter ferry, the Staten Island Ferry doesn't get as close or stop for photos.

Free NYC Museums

National Museum of the American Indian : The sixteenth museum in the Smithsonian Institution, the national museum works in collaboration with Native peoples of the Western Hemisphere to preserve, study, and exhibit the lives, history, and art of Native Americans. The museum is housed in the historic Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House and museum admission is free daily. The museum is located in lower Manhattan on Bowling Green, just a short walk from the Staten Island Ferry .

Goethe House: Learn about German life and culture at the library and gallery of the Goethe Institut. Exhibits, lectures, and performances are changed regularly. The museum is located on Spring Street and is open Monday through Friday. Admission to the exhibits and lectures is free. The library is closed Mondays and costs $10 ($5 for students) for year-long access.

New York Public Library: Entrance to exhibits at the four major Manhattan branches as well as borough branches is free. The various branches of the library are located throughout the city— check out the current exhibit schedule and descriptions to find out what most interests you. Exhibits are as diverse as the libraries themselves—from science, industry, and business to performing arts and the humanities.

Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum: The only U.S. museum dedicated to contemporary and historic design is open free to the public on Saturdays from 6-9 p.m. Located on museum mile at 91st Street and 5th Avenue, the museum is open daily except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. In addition to the permanent collection , there are changing exhibitions .

Free NYC Walking Tours

One fun and free walking tour is available every Friday at 12:30 p.m. Meet the guide at the Sculpture Court at 120 Park Avenue (southwest corner of East 42nd Street). You'll be treated to a wonderful tour of Grand Central Station and the surrounding neighborhood. The 90-minute tour also includes many neighborhood highlights, including Pershing Square and the  Chrysler Building .

Walking offers you the opportunity to see and experience a  neighborhood  up-close and learn about the people and places that make it unique. These free walking tours cover a variety of neighborhoods, as well as two of  New York City's great parks —Central Park and the High Line. Free tours tend to attract large groups, so you're not going to get the same intimate experience you might experience some of New York City's best walking tours, but you can't beat the price.

Head to the Financial District in Manhattan to begin the free walking tour and discover the city’s most emblematic landmarks.

N ew York City is not cheap. That’s a well-known fact. It’s even more expensive these days, thanks to post-pandemic inflation. But don’t let that stop you form enjoying this metropolis of nearly nine million denizens. That said, there are a legion of fun, free things to do too. Here are the best free things to do for solo travelers, children, couples, and families, from free ferry trips to Staten Island (where views over Manhattan are glorious), and wandering through Central Park, to watching the street artists at Washington Square, and soaking up the atmosphere at South Street Seaport.

Ellis Island

Search for a lost ancestor at ellis island.

For more than 60 years from 1892, Ellis Island served as one of the main immigration processing centres in the United States. It's estimated that 40 per cent of living Americans today can trace at least one ancestor whose gateway to America was through this island just off the coast of Manhattan, many escaping war and famine. Today the place is a fascinating monument to human immigration. Visit the restored Main Arrivals Hall and the museum which is a self-guided tour through the complex's history. At the American Family Immigration History Center, visitors can do multimedia searches through the archives. Who knows? You might just find a lost ancestor.

Governors Island

Explore a lesser known corner of new york city.

This 172-acre island south of the Brooklyn Bridge off the southern tip of Manhattan is one of the city's most beloved green spaces. Between May and October, you can access it by ferry from the Battery Maritime Building (10 South Street) in Manhattan or from Brooklyn Bridge Park in DUMBO. With bikes for hire, a beach, acres of lawns, and a promenade around the perimetre, it's perfect for a stroll, or an afternoon picnic taking in views of Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Statue of Liberty. There are a number of food trucks and vendors operating on the island, and a line-up of summer-long events from the Jazz Age Lawn Party  to pop-up dinners.

Financial District

Visit the 9/11 memorial monument.

There are few places in New York City as emotionally, politically and patriotically loaded as this spot in lower Manhattan. The memorial consists of the footprints of the two towers, today, two giant reflecting pools with the names of the victims inscribed along the periphery. Another powerful monument to the victims who lost their lives on 11 September, 2001 is inside St. Paul's Chapel, the diminutive church from 1766 across the street from the reflecting pools, houses photos, fliers, and mementos related to the attacks. Fans of contemporary architecture should take a look at the new Santiago Calatrava-designed subway station that looks like the skeleton of a stegosaurus.

Take it to the bridge… the Brooklyn Bridge

Arguably the most famous bridge in the world, the Brooklyn Bridge is not only aesthetically pleasing, it makes for a great walk. The 271-foot-tall neo-gothic arches are certainly the bridge's trademark, but strolling along the elevated pedestrian walkway (starting in Brooklyn and walking toward Manhattan) is a must for any visitor. When it was completed in 1883, it not only united the two, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world at almost 7,000 feet. The bridge's construction was overseen first by John Augustus Roebling and then his son, Washington. But after Washington suddenly died, his wife, Emily Warren Roebling, took over and finished the job, a fact that has been largely lost to history.

South Street Seaport

Explore an historic port.

Most New Yorkers have known the 400-year-old South Street Seaport as the home of the massive fish market. It moved to the Bronx in 2005 and now locals and visitors flock here to meander the cobblestoned streets flanked by the largest concentration of 19th-century buildings in New York. Big efforts have gone into reviving the neighbourhood, whose roots can be traced back to the 17th century, with the development of wide spaces, social dining and drinking scene, shops and a market. It's entertaining enough to stroll the streets, window shopping, checking out the historic ships docked on the East River, and taking in the views of the nearby Brooklyn Bridge.

Little Italy

Sip an espresso in little italy.

Benvenuto al'Italia Piccola. Also known as Little Italy, this swathe of all things Italian isn't what it used to be. For decades the area has been losing its Italianness to encroaching Chinatown. But that hasn't stopped the masses of tourists from descending upon what's left, Mulberry Street. Little Italy today is a collection of shops peddling in Italian food products and mediocre restaurants (complete with aggressive barkers trying to lure every passerby inside). Nurse a cappuccino at an outdoor café if you must, but don't waste time and money eating at any of these restaurants. Still, Little Italy is an amusing quick diversion on your way to Chinatown or elsewhere.

Head to the markets of Chinatown

Sprawling and dense at the same time, New York's Chinatown isn't just the chief neighbourhood in which to pick up super cheap 'I Love NY' t-shirts and gadgets. Chinese began settling in the area in the 1850s and it has grown and expanded since. It's not the biggest Chinatown outside of the motherland – that distinction would go to the Chinese-area in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam – but estimates suggest there are about 100,000 Chinese living in this Manhattan enclave. There aren't many Chinese landmarks here, so put away the map and wander the streets where markets brim with live seafood and restaurants buzz with atmosphere.

Lower East Side

Feel like a movie star as you explore lower east side.

Sometimes this neighbourhood feels like a movie set, with five-floor tenement buildings, their façades partly masked by snaking fire escapes; narrow streets; and subterranean shops. It all makes for one of the city's most atmospheric neighbourhoods. A century ago, the Lower East Side was a bastion of new immigrants – mostly Central and Eastern European – and due to high crime rates it became known as the place not to go (lest you wanted to leave without your wallet). Today, though, the Lower East Side has become synonymous with one thing: partying. Its streets are overflowing with bars but there are also some great restaurants. And don't miss the very intriguing Tenement Museum.

Greenwich Village

Live like the locals in greenwich village.

Say you live in 'the Village' and locals who know their New York neighbourhoods will swoon. This leafy area, filled with historic brownstones, stretches from Fifth Avenue to the Hudson River, W. 14th to Houston Streets. There are actually two neighbourhoods that make up the Village. The names 'Greenwich Village' and 'West Village' are generally interchangeable, but locals use West Village to demarcate the more tranquil section between Sixth Avenue and the Hudson River, while Greenwich Village is generally referred to as the area centred around Washington Square and the intersection of Bleecker and MacDougal Streets. The latter area might interest fans of the 1960s, as it was here where young, struggling artists named Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix, among others, got their start.

Enjoy the street performers at Washington Square

It might be hard to envision it today, but this well-manicured swath of land in the centre of downtown Manhattan was once murky marshland, a cemetery, and then a military parade ground. Of the city's 1,900 or so parks, Washington Square is one of the most memorable. Not only because of the giant arch that stands where Fifth Avenue begins; nor for the recently revamped and re-manicured landscape of the place, but because of the people who frequent the park. Bohemians and beatniks, street performers and students from nearby New York University give the place a groovy and fun vibe. On hot days, children play in the fountain and jazz musicians thump out tunes.

Meatpacking District

Admire the high line park's glorious gardens.

It all began with a long stretch of abandoned elevated railroad track. Built in the 1930s, the track was used to transport cargo from the piers along the Westside at 34th Street to downtown Manhattan until 1980. But the track fell into disarray and a movement to turn it into a park picked up steam, aided by the support of celebrities. And finally in June 2009, the High Line Park officially opened, becoming only the second elevated park in the world (after Promenade Plantée in Paris).  Since opening, the High Line has become an instant Big Apple classic site, wowing visitors and locals with its cool design (it goes right under the Standard Hotel) and incorporating much of the natural surrounding.

Explore a ‘Little Island’ in the middle of the Hudson River

While it was being built in 2020, many passersby stopped to marvel at this odd structure in the Hudson River with its massive stone tulip-shaped columns emerging from the water to support a lush landscape of verdant, path-carved hills. Little Island put down its drawbridge to Manhattan in May 2021 and it’s been a hit ever since. Funded mostly by a foundation run by  businessman Barry Diller and his fashion designer wife Diane von Furstenberg and designed by London-based Thomas Heatherwick, the one-hectare artificial island boasts food kiosks and an amphitheatre where regular free concerts take place in the warm-weather months. Spend an hour or so traversing the trails and taking in the splendid views of Manhattan.

Flatiron and NoMad

Take a walking tour of the flatiron district.

Every Sunday at 11am, rain or sunshine, a professional tour guide is waiting at the Flatiron Building on 23rd Street and Fifth Avenue, in order to give a walking tour of the Flatiron District and the NoMad neighborhood . And it’s entirely free. The 90-minute stroll takes you past some of the neighborhoods’ most iconic landmarks while the guide puts everything into a historical context.

Midtown West

Pull up a chair at times square.

This 'square' (which is really just the convergence of Seventh Avenue and Broadway) flashes and pops with enough lights to make your head spin. But the square wasn't always so bright. After the Depression, the area was the most dangerous part of town. And in the 1980s, the strip clubs and peeps show houses became infamous. All that's gone now in the new Disney-fied version of the space, where mega-stores compete with fast-moving news tickers and flickering billboards for your attention. The latest development, though, is a good one: tables and chairs have replaced part of the street, making Times Square a much more comfortable place to spend a couple hours.

Look studious at the New York Public Library

Perhaps one of the most iconic libraries in the world—its two stone lions acting as sentries that bookend the steps leading up to the entrance—the main branch of the New York Public Library is a fun (and free) place to wander around. Head up to the famed first-floor Main Reading Room and marvel at a two-block-long space,  52-foot-high ceilings, bathed in natural light, where scholars and the intellectually curious comb over documents from the cellar archive where over four million books are stored.

Midtown East

Marvel at grand central station's architectural elegance.

What is this, Grand Central Station? We've all asked this question when we're in a suddenly and unexpectedly busy place. Now go see where it originated and you'll catch the true meaning of this bustling transportation hub, as a whopping 750,000 people pass through the station every day. Yes, you say, it's only a train station. But quite a majestic one indeed. Roman-style vaults may impress, but visitors are awed by the starry sky of an arched ceiling in the main ticket hall. Built in 1913, Grand Central is the dream of Cornelius Vanderbilt. Unlike once-glorious, now decrepit Penn Station, Grand Central is still shining like the day Vanderbilt conceived it.

Take a closer look at the Chrysler Building

The 86-storey Empire State Building may get all the oohs and aahs from out-of-towners, but the 'little' Chrysler building (at 77 floors) is a stunner. Look closely enough and you'll notice the grills of automobiles at the top (the name of the building should be a clue as to why it's car themed). But there are more than just car parts going on here: gargoyles jut out at floor 59 and eagles two floors above that. Made with stainless steel, this striking skyscraper gleams in the sunlight during the day and reflects the city lights at night. Most of the exterior of the building is off limits, but pop into the lobby, open to the public during the day, to get a taste of the marble-clad Art Deco interiors.

Visit St. Patrick's Cathedral

It's not New York's biggest cathedral (that honour would go to St. John the Divine), but St. Patrick's is the city's most famous and arguably most beautiful. This bewitching neo-gothic structure makes for a nice architectural contrast with the Art Deco-clad Rockefeller Center across the street. Completed in 1878, the cathedral is one of the country's most identifiable churches. Up to 2,200 people can fit inside and the interior has been packed to take part in requiem masses for notables such as Babe Ruth, Celia Cruz, Robert F. Kennedy, Joe DiMaggio, and Andy Warhol. Be sure to check out the Pieta, three times larger than Michelangelo's version in the Vatican, and sculpted by Araldo Perugi.

Central Park

Explore central park and enjoy its many elements.

Central Park is the work of genius landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted (who also helped create Prospect Park in Brooklyn and Golden Gate Park in San Francisco). Olmsted's objective was to give city dwellers a reprieve from the blights of urban life, to make them forget – if only for a couple hours – that they were in one of the most bustling cities on the planet. It worked. Even today, one finds New Yorkers and New York visitors taking advantage of the park's many elements: from ponds and orchards to rock formations and meadows. A whopping 25 million people visit the park each year and it still does a fine job of absorbing urban dwellers.

Upper West Side

Take a stroll around columbia university.

Sedate and tranquil compared to the rest of Manhattan, the Upper West Side is for many a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of Midtown or lower Manhattan. Largely residential with quiet tree-lined streets, the neighbourhood has a few attractions that may inspire a visit: the American Museum of Natural History, for example. Fans of Seinfeld should most certainly wander up: the coffee shop on the corner of Broadway and W. 112th St. may look very familiar, but Columbia University is a lovely stroll, as it exudes a classic university campus with its monumental neo-classical buildings, sculpture-studded plazas, and students buzzing around.

Washington Heights

View spanish art at the hispanic society museum.

Hop on the A or C subway trains to 155th Street to the Hispanic Society Museum , a free museum that owns the the largest collection of Spanish art and manuscripts outside of Spain. The collection includes religious artifacts, furniture, textiles, ceramics and art by some of Spain’s most famous artists, including Velazquez, El Greco, Goya, and Joaquin Sorolla, whose monumental 14-panel painting called “Visions of Spain” is worth the trip to the museum in and of itself.

Watch fireworks at Coney Island

It's one of the longer journeys you'll take on the subway – about an hour – but it's a pleasant one, as part of the way is elevated. Coney Island has long been a summer escape for urbanites. Stroll the historic boardwalk, take a dip in the Atlantic, or take in a baseball game, as the Brooklyn Cyclones minor league baseball team play at the charming MCU Park just off the Boardwalk with free fireworks every Friday night through summer. If you're there for lunch, Nathan's Famous  on Surf Avenue is, indeed, world famous, hosting their Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest since 1916, but for a better calibre of food try Totonno's (1524 Neptune Ave) offering some of New York's finest pizza.

Take a peaceful walk through Green Wood Cemetery

When it was founded in 1838, this vast and bewitching cemetery was actually a rural spot in Brooklyn. Today it sits smack in the centre of an urban landscape. And provides for an enchanting, peaceful stroll. The 478-acre city of the dead is actually the highest elevation in the borough, making for some lovely views, as you stroll along ornate gravestones and neo-Gothic chapels. In the 19th century before Prospect Park was constructed, Green Wood was Brooklyn's unofficial city park. If you’re looking for the graves of famous people, seek out the burial spots for conductor/composer Leonard Bernstein and artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Staten Island

Board the staten island ferry for great views of manhattan.

Sad as it is to say, there are few obvious sightseeing opportunities in the borough of Staten Island. One of them, though, is to take the free ferry from Manhattan. It provides a great view of the lower Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty. And the Staten Island neighbourhood at the ferry dock, St. George, boasts cafés and restaurants. Over 70,000 people per day take the five-mile, 25-minute scenic ferry ride. You should too. Ferries leave every 30 minutes.

All aboard! Fleet Week is returning this May; here are the ships set to come in

A’hoy, New Yorkers! Get ready to see sailors and other service members all throughout town when Fleet Week returns to NYC at the end of May.

The Big Apple’s time-honored tradition of welcoming the U.S. armed forces to the city will kick off with the famous Parade of Ships on Wednesday, May 22, in the waters off Staten Island and Manhattan. The celebration continues through Memorial Day weekend before wrapping up on Tuesday, May 28. Activities include ship tours, demonstrations, musical performances and meet-and-greets with service members. 

Coinciding with Memorial Day Weekend, nearly 2,300 service members from the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and Marines will be in town as honorary New Yorkers, greeting all who want to say hello and thank them for their service. 

“Fleet Week is about celebrating those who serve and recognizing the unyielding strength of our Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard team,” Commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Rear Adm. Wesley McCall wrote on Fleet Week’s website. “As we come together to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice during their service, we are reminded of the diverse and inclusive fighting force that is currently serving to protect national security and preserve our way of life.”

What to expect at Fleet Week 2024 in NYC

A major highlight of Fleet Week includes free tours of participating ships. Organizers are still ironing out other details of the celebration, so more information is to come. But festivities traditionally include interactive displays and demonstrations, musical performances and additional family-friendly activities.

Public tours daily; 10a.m. to 5 p.m. Four U.S. Naval Academy YPs, Annapolis, Md. Bay-class cutter USCGC Sturgeon Bay (WTGB-109) from Bayonne, N.J.

Freedom-class littoral combat ship USS MARINETTE (LCS 25) from Mayport, Fla. Legend-class cutter USCGC Calhoun (WMSL-759) from Charleston, S.C. Keeper-class coastal buoy tender USCGC Katherine Walker (WLM-552) from Bayonne, N.J.

What you need to know about enjoying Fleet Week 2024 in NYC

Where does fleet week in nyc take place.

Fleet Week activities are located throughout the city. Ships will be docked on Manhattan piers, including Pier 86 by the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, as well as at the Homeport Pier on Staten Island. 

When is the Parade of Ships? 

The Parade of Ships cruises into the harbor on Wednesday, May 22, to kick off Fleet Week. The exact hours have not been announced yet, but usually it is in the early morning and lasts several hours.

Where can New Yorkers see the parade?

The ships usually sail up the Hudson River from Battery Park to south of the George Washington Bridge. It is always free for the public to enjoy.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — More than 32,000 participants in the TD NYC Five Boro Bike Tour will descend upon New York City on Sunday, May 5, and they’ll finish their 40-mile journey in Fort Wadsworth.

The event is billed as the largest charity bike ride in the world, with participants riding through all five boroughs of the city.

I love the Yankees (-250) to handle the Athletics on Monday without much trouble, but I’m going to take the more lucrative odds with the run line.

Run line/Against the spread

BET YANKEES -1.5 (-120) .

Sears has been torched by New York, losing all 3 of his starts against the Yankees and allowing nearly a run per inning.

On the other side of the rubber, Rodon has been dominant against the A’s, not losing a start to Oakland since 2016 when he was a member of the Chicago White Sox.

The Athletics have a 1-5 record against left-handers with a combined batting average of just .218 on the season.

My gut tells me to take the Under because I like Rodon to shut down the A’s lackluster lineup. I don’t see them scoring more than a run or 2 in this game, but the big question mark is around how many runs the Yanks put up. I’m going to just stay away and focus on the run line.
