Reading Answers

1 Answer:  False

Question type:  True/False/Not Given

Answer location:  Paragraph 1

Answer explanation:  We can understand from the first paragraph that a  deposit of $150 each is payable on booking and the balance is payable 30 days before tour departure,  which means that customers can pay a deposit of $150 and pay the remaining balance before the tour departure. As a result, the statement contradicts the information, so, the answer is False.

2 Answer:  True

Question type:  True/False/Not Given

Answer location:  Paragraph 2

Answer explanation:  Paragraph 2 illustrates the  conditions  of Sunset Tours, that is the  cost is subject to a minimum of 25 passengers traveling and we reserve the right to cancel if this number is not reached.  These lines suggest that the tour will not proceed until there are not enough bookings. Thus, the statement agrees with the information, so, the answer is True.

3 Answer:  Not Given

Answer location:  Paragraph 4

Answer explanation:  We find a reference for cancellation of the tours in Paragraph 4, which states that  travelers must have a travel insurance policy to cover sudden illness or accident.  However, it’s not mentioned anywhere that if travel plans are disrupted due to unexpected problems, the tourists can get a refund. Therefore, the answer is Not Given.

4 Answer:  Not Given

Answer location:  Paragraph 3

Answer explanation:  We find a reference for cabin bags in Paragraph 3, which states that  each passenger is entitled to bring a cabin bag and one item of checked luggage no heavier than 20 kg as per industry requirements.  However, it is not mentioned anywhere that there’s no weight limit on the traveler’s cabin luggage. Thus, the answer is Not Given.

5 Answer:  False

Answer location:  Paragraph 3,last line

Answer explanation:  In the last line of the 3rd paragraph, it is stated, “ Your suitcase should be of a size and weight you can manage as tour leaders may not be readily available to handle your luggage.”  We can deduce from these lines that Sunset Tours has advised the tourist to manage the size of their luggage since the tour leaders will not always be available to handle their luggage. These lines illustrate that tour leaders help the tourists with their luggage. Hence, the statement contradicts the information, so, the answer is False.

6 Answer:  True

Answer explanation:  We can understand from Paragraph 4 that  travelers must have a travel insurance policy to cover sudden illness or accident.  As a result, tourists must insure against sickness and injury. Hence, the statement agrees with the information, so, the answer is True.

7 Answer:  False

Answer location:  Paragraph 4

Answer explanation:  Paragraph 4 discusses the cancelation and refunds of Sunset Tours. It is mentioned in this paragraph that you must have a  travel insurance policy to cover sudden illness or accident.  Even so, an administration fee is retained for notice of more than 30 days before departure but, should cancellation occur through  unforeseen circumstances not covered by travel insurance, 10% of the fare is retained for 15- 30 days’ notice ,  20% for 4- 14 days and 50% Is held for less than 4 days’ notice.  We can deduce from these lines that an insured traveler who cancels due to illness for more than a month before departure will get only the remaining refund after some amount has been retained by the tour company. Thus, the statement contradicts the information, so, the answer is False.

8 Answer:  False

Answer location:  Paragraph 4, last line

Answer explanation:  In the last line of paragraph 4, it is mentioned that  there will be no refund for notice of one day or on the day of departure.  Hence, there’ll be no refund for passengers canceling a day before the departure date. Thus, the answer is False.

9 Answer:  True

Answer location:  Paragraph 5

Answer explanation:  Paragraph 5 states that  although every endeavor is made by Sunset Tours to ensure your holiday goes according to plan, we act purely as an agent for the various accommodation and other services provided.  These lines indicate that sunset tours are not responsible for the state of hotel rooms as they act as an agent for various accommodation and services. Thus, the answer is True.

10 Answer:  D

Question type:  Multiple Choice Question

Answer location: –

Answer explanation:  Although we don’t find any reference to what exactly 5ZBG is, we can understand from the format of the letter that  5ZBG is a broadcasting agency that primarily plays soothing music  to its listeners. Because programming in the letter refers to performing music (program). Thus, the answer is D.

11 Answer:  B

Answer explanation:  The first paragraph of the letter states, “ We wish to express our sincere thanks for your support during our last successful fund-raising endeavor. Your annual donation makes it possible for us to improve the station in every way for your interest and pleasure.”  We can understand from these lines that the authorities of 5ZBG are expressing their heartfelt thanks for their listener’s support during their fund-raising endeavors. Because of annual donations, the 5ZBG authorities can improve their station. Thus, the listener is being thanked for offering their assistance. Hence, the answer is B.

12 Answer:  D

Answer explanation:  Paragraph 2 illustrates, “ We would like to extend to you an invitation to join us at the station on Wednesday, 16th August at 3.00 pm for afternoon tea and to discuss station programming. Your input will be a great help to us. It will enable us to continue programming to suit your requirements. Together we will be discussing future ideas for SZBG “ In the 2nd paragraph of the letter, the 5ZBG authorities have invited their listeners to join the station to discuss station programming as their input will be of great help. It will enable them to continue programming to suit their requirements. Further, a discussion regarding future ideas for 5ZBG will also be held. Thus, it is evident that the listener is being invited to an event where he along with 5ZBG will discuss improvements. Thus, the answer is D.

13 Answer:  A

Answer location:  –

Answer explanation: The 5ZBG authorities have concluded the letter by writing RSVP by 5/8/11,  which means the listeners are required to reply or respond to the letter by August 5. Here, the term  “RSVP”  comes from the  French expression répondez s’il vous plaît, meaning “please respond .” If  RSVP is written on an invitation, it means the host has requested that the guest respond to say if they plan to attend the party.  Thus, the answer is A.

Employees and Contractors

An employee is someone who performs work under a contract of employment. Identifying who is, or is not, an employee has become an increasingly disputed area, with a number of different factors to be considered. Non – employees may be ‘ independent contractors’ or ‘sub- contractors’ and are employed under a contract for services or even as agents representing a client business. The legal consequences of being an independent contractor are significantly different to those for employees. Only an ’employee ‘ can be covered by an award1 or make a workplace agreement. However, some cleaners, outworkers and some drivers of public passenger vehicles who might ordinarily be considered independent contractors are deemed to be employees under the Fair Work Act.

The rights and obligations of employees are very different to those who are self-employed. To distinguish between employees and independent contractors, the courts take into account a number of ‘ factors to determine what the real nature of a particular work relationship is. These factors may include: Control over work-generally an employee works as directed by the employer whereas a contractor has a ‘ greater say in how the work is to be done.

Payment-employees are usually paid on the basis of an hourly rate or a salary. Contractors are more often paid for a required outcome, with less regard for time.

Work injury-contractors are responsible to insure themselves against injury but employees are not. Risk-employees generally do not bear in a direct way the risk of financial loss incurred by the business for which they work. Contractors have a chance of profit, and also the risk of loss.

Sub-contracting-an employee cannot assign or delegate the work to others whereas a contractor is typically permitted to do so.

Tools and equipment-contractors may supply special equipment or tools to do the job. Income tax and superannuation-employers usually pay these for their employees whereas contractors make ‘ their own arrangements.

Questions 14-22 Classify the following as

  • A. contractors
  • B. employees
  • C. employers

Write the correct letter A, B or C in boxes 14-22 on your answer sheet. You may use any letter more than once.

People who 14 . work for wages or salary rather than profit 15 . pay tax on behalf of others 16 . have less responsibility for the way in which a job is carried out 17 . do not provide their own work gear 18 . pay by the hour 19 . do not have the freedom to pay other people to do their job for them 20 . do not benefit from belonging to a trade union 21 . are paid for the end result rather than hours recorded 22 . are required to sign an employment contract

Read the passage below and answer Questions 23-28 .

Paid parental Leave

If you are a working parent expecting a child after July 31st, the information below about Paid Parental Leave concerns you.

From 1st August, the first national Paid Parental Leave scheme will start. It’s a new entitlement for working parents, funded by the government.

Taking time away from work for a new baby is a common part of working life. Paid Parental Leave is designed to help parents spend time with a new baby and also to help employers retain skilled staff.

Eligible working parents of children born or adopted on or after 1st August may get 18 weeks government-funded pay at the National Minimum Wage to help them care for a new baby. Full-time, part-time, casual, seasonal, contract and self-employed workers may be eligible. You must have worked at least 330 hours (just over one day a week) for 10 of the 13 months before your new baby arrives. You can have up to an 8 week unpaid break between two working days and still be eligible. You can earn up to $100,000 a year (individual salary) and still be eligible.

Usually the mother must apply for Paid Parental Leave. If you are eligible, you can transfer some or all of the pay to your partner (he needs to be eligible too). The scheme gives families more options to balance work and family.

You can claim up to three months in advance, and your pay can start any time you choose from when your child is born or adopted. It will be paid in one continuous period from the start date and must all be taken with the first year after the birth or adoption. You are encouraged to apply early.

Eligible parents can receive Parental Leave pay at the same time, before or after other employer-provided paid leave or entitlements. The existing minimum entitlement to 12 months unpaid parental leave for long-term employees is unchanged.

From 1st August, employers must provide Government-funded Parental Leave pay through their usual pay cycle to eligible employees who have been with their business for at least 12 months. Other eligible parents will be paid through the Family Assistance Office.

In boxes 25-28 on your answer sheet, write TRUE      if the statement agrees with the information FALSE   if the statement contradicts the information NOTGIVEN    if there is no information on this

25 . Employees can start getting Paid Parental Leave up to 3 months before the child is born. 26 . Employees cannot receive the benefit once the child reaches the age of 12 months. 27 . Employees who do not make a claim early may miss out on Paid Parental Leave. 28 . Employees can take advantage of both state-paid and employer-paid parental leave at the same time.

SECTION3 – Questions 29-40

Read the text below and answer Questions 29-40.

WHY DO CLOCKS GO CLOCKWISE?

The simple answer is that clocks always go clockwise! If the clock’s hands moved in the opposite direction (to what we are used to), it would still be called ‘clockwise’, of course! But, seriously, why do the hands move from left to right at the top? Generally, the answer given is that clocks were invented in the northern hemisphere where the sun rises in the east, travels round to the south, and sets to the west. The shadow on a typical domestic sundial in olden times would move from left to right. So, the answer is completely logical. Or is it?

If we go back to early clocks, because of their sheer size and cost, there was generally only one turret clock in a town, usually placed high on a tower for all to see and frequently accompanied by a bell that could be heard when the clock face was not visible. If we go back in time to before mechanical clocks, even if people had a sundial at home, they needed a large public sundial that could be read from a distance when they were out. Sundials were therefore placed high on a wall in the town. This is where the explanation above about clockwise movement no longer rings true: for sundials on vertical walls have to have their hours arranged in an anti-clockwise progression. As vertical sundials would have been the predecessors of clock towers, one wonders why a right to left movement didn’t become the standard. An old vertical sundial can still be seen in Queen’s College, Cambridge, England. Not only does it go ‘anticlockwise’ but strangely (for us) the number ‘I’ is at the bottom rather than the top.

Surely the hands on clocks have always moved in the same direction, though? Surprisingly, the answer is no. There is a clock painted in fresco in a Cathedral in Florence that is peculiar in several ways. We are used to clocks with twelve hours on the dial but this one has twenty-four and the twenty-fourth hour does not signify midnight but the hour of sunset (a system that survived until the eighteenth century apparently); furthermore, the layout of the numbers has ‘I ‘ at the bottom, although of course XII is at the top, and it goes anticlockwise! This clock is not unique, however.

There were other clocks around in the 15th and 16th centuries with Roman numerals going anti clockwise. Some of them had a hand that went around once in 24 hours, others went around once every twelve hours, and still others went around four times in 24 hours with the digits I to VI painted on the clock face. Then again, some went around once in 12 hours but the digits were marked I to VI and then I to VI again. Some of the ‘once every 24 hours’ ones were marked I to XII and I to XII again. There were probably even more variations than this. To find out why all clocks go clockwise and are numbered I to XII (or 1 to 12) today, we have to consider the phenomenon described in 1890 in Principles of Economics by Alfred Marshall.

Early clocks were massive and extremely heavy (not to mention very expensive) devices and technology over the centuries has reduced these to small timepieces that can sit on a little shelf, be carried (often in a waistcoat pocket), or worn on the wrist. When it comes to new technologies, there are often many designs in competition with one another. Occasionally, one design is obviously pre-eminent and the others soon become obsolete. In the case of the clocks, there would not seem to be one design that is outstandingly more advantageous than the others. That is where Marshall’s theory comes in: ‘whatever firm [design or technology] gets a good start’ eventually wins. We can assume, therefore, that one type of clock face-although it may not have had any technological advantage over the others-was somewhat more common; and, once one technology secures a larger share of the market, there are economies of scale. It becomes more cost-efficient to produce thereby giving it even greater advantage over its rivals. In this way, one technology can completely eclipse the others.

Why do clocks go clockwise? Pure chance is probably the answer. Clockwise may have been more widespread and got off to a good start. After the invention of the first mechanical clock, for a century and a half, there was no consistency in the direction, the position of the numbers on the dial, or even the number of µours shown. All this changed with the mass production of clocks and watches as domestic items. For nearly five hundred years now, they have been consistent-a clockwise dial with twelve hours and two rotations in a 24-hour period.

Questions 29-34

Do the following statements agree with the information given in the text?

In boxes 29-34 on your answer sheet, write

TRUE                  if the statement agrees with the information

FALSE               if the statement contradicts the information

NOT GIVEN       if there is no information on this

29 . ‘Clockwise’ has always described the left-to-right movement of a clock’s hands. 30 . The shadow on a domestic sundial in the southern hemisphere moves from right to left. 31 . Before the invention of mechanical clocks, people used sundials to tell the time. 32 . The shadow on a vertical sundial moves in a different direction from the domestic equivalent. 33 . The sundial at Queen’s College and the clock in the Florentine Cathedral move in the same direction. 34 . On the old 24-hour clocks, number XII (12) stood for midday and XXIV (24) denoted midnight.

DO YOU HAVE A MUSIC PROJECT IN MIND THAT MIGHT BENEFIT FROM FUNDING?

Music is wonderfully therapeutic! This is recognised by The Dosoco Foundation, which supports local projects that use music for social good.

The next round of Dosoco grant funding will shortly be open for applications. Grants are available from £700 to £1,000 (for organisations) and up to £300 (for individuals) in the areas of music education (e.g. working with a talented music student with either physical, social or learning disabilities), music access (e.g. a music club for groups that might struggle to start something on their own), music innovation (e.g. using an electronic device such as Raspberry Pi to help disabled people make music) and music therapy (e.g. an idea for using music to support positive mental health).

Dosoco recently awarded a grant to Alexia Sloane, a young composer with sight loss, to enable her to attend the sound-and-music summer-school composition course at the Purcell School. Alexia has since gained a place as a composer with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain – the first blind composer to be appointed – and has also been awarded the title of Young Composer of the Year. She was the first female composer ever to receive this honour in its ten-year history.

Organisations, families and individuals can apply by completing a simple form. Dosoco can contribute up to 50% towards project costs. Projects must be locally based and must be new ideas for using music to make a positive impact on people’s lives where help is really needed.

Guide to employees on workplace monitoring

What is workplace monitoring?

Employers have the right to monitor your activities in many situations at work. For example, your activities may be recorded on CCTV cameras, and your letters may be opened and read. In addition, your employer may use an automated software programme to check the emails you receive at work. Phone calls may be listened to and recorded, and the log of websites you use may be checked.

All of these forms of monitoring are covered by data protection law. Data protection law doesn’t prevent monitoring in the workplace. However, it does set down rules about the circumstances and the way in which monitoring should be carried out.

Before deciding whether to introduce monitoring, your employer should identify any negative effects the monitoring may have on staff. This is called impact assessment.

Monitoring electronic communications at work

Your employer can legally monitor your use of electronic communications in the workplace if the monitoring relates to the business and the equipment being monitored is provided partly or wholly for work.

Except in extremely limited circumstances, employers must take reasonable steps to let staff know that monitoring is happening, what is being monitored and why it is necessary.

As long as your employer sticks to these rules, they don’t need to get your consent before they monitor your electronic communications, but only if the monitoring is for specific reasons. These may be to establish facts which are relevant to the business or to check standards, for example, listening in to phone calls to assess the quality of your work. Monitoring is also allowed if its purpose is to prevent or detect crime. It may be necessary to make sure electronic systems are operating effectively, for example, to prevent computer viruses entering the system. Your employer is also allowed to listen in to any calls you make to confidential helplines, but in this case he or she is not allowed to record these calls.

International Experience Canada: application process

If you want to travel and work temporarily in Canada as part of International Experience Canada (IEC), your first step is to become a candidate in one or more IEC pools. There are three categories of pool: International Co-op (Internship), Working Holiday and Young Professionals.

To apply, first use our questionnaire to see if you meet the criteria to get into the IEC pools. This should take you about ten minutes. You can find it at www.cic.gc.ca/ctc-vac/cometocanada.asp. After completing this, if you are eligible you will be sent a personal reference code, which you should use to create your online account. At the same time, you should fill in any remaining fields in your profile with the required information, including which IEC pools you want to be in. (Some parts will already have been completed for you.)

If you are sent an invitation to proceed with your application, you will have 10 days to decide whether to accept this or not. If you accept, click the ‘Start Application’ button. You then have 20 days to complete your application.

For International Co-op and Young Professionals categories, your employer in Canada must pay the compliance fee and inform you of your offer of employment number. (This does not apply to the Working Holiday pool.)

Once you have received this, you should then upload copies of police and medical certificates, if required. If you do not have these, you should upload proof that you have applied for them. You should then pay your participation fee of C$126 online by credit card. (There is an additional payment of C$100 if you are applying for the Working Holiday category.)

Your application will then be assessed. You can apply to withdraw at this stage and will be given a refund if you do this within 56 days. If your application is successful, you will receive a letter of introduction which you can show to Immigration when you enter Canada.

RESEARCH ON IMPROVING AGRICULTURAL YIELDS IN AFRICA

Three programmes are investigating ways of improving agricultural productivity in Africa.

More than, half of the global population growth between now and 2050 is expected to occur in Africa. And more people means a requirement for more food.

Ethiopia, for example, has the largest livestock population in Africa but with a growing population, even its 53 million cattle are not enough. And now efforts to develop fanning there are bringing a significant health concern. Professor James Wood from the University of Cambridge explains that new breeds that are being introduced are more vulnerable to bovine TB (tuberculosis) than the zebu cattle which were previously reared there. ‘This may have health implications for those who work with and live alongside infected cattle, and also raises concerns about transmission to areas which previously had low levels of TB,’ he warns.

Wood leads a research programme which is looking at the feasibility of control strategies, including cattle vaccination. The programme brings together veterinary scientists, epidemiologists, geneticists, immunologists and social scientists in eight Ethiopian and UK institutions. ‘We need this mix because we are not only asking how effective strategies will be, but also whether farmers will accept them, and what the consequences are for prosperity and wellbeing,’ says Wood.

The impact that increasing productivity can have on farmers’ livelihoods is not lost on an insect expert at the University of Ghana, Dr Ken Fening, who is working on another food-related research project. Cabbages are not indigenous to Africa but have become a major cash crop for Ghanaian farmers and an important source of income for traders from markets and hotels. ‘A good crop can bring in money to buy fertilisers and farm equipment, and also help to pay for healthcare and education for the family,’ he says. Recently, however, fields of stunted, yellowing cabbages, their leaves curled and dotted with mould, have become a familiar and devastating sight for the farmers of Ghana.

From his field station base in Kpong, Ghana, Fening works closely with smallholder farmers on pest-control strategies. Two years ago they started reporting that a new disease was attacking their crops. ‘It seemed to be associated with massive infestations of pink and green aphids,’ says Fening, ‘and from my studies of the way insects interact with many different vegetables, I’m familial* with the types of damage they can cause.’

But farmers were typically seeing the total loss of their crops, and he realised that the devastation couldn’t just be caused by sap-sucking insects. Despite no previous reports of viral diseases affecting cabbage crops in Ghana, the symptoms suggested a viral pathogen.

Together with Cambridge plant biologist Dr John Carr, Fening collected samples of cabbage plants in Ghana showing signs of disease, and also aphids on the diseased plants. Back in Cambridge, Fening used screening techniques including a type of DNA ‘fingerprinting’ to identify the aphid species, and sophisticated molecular biology methods to try to identify the offending virus.

‘Aphids are a common carrier of plant-infecting viruses,’ explains Carr. ‘The “usual suspects” are turnip mosaic virus and cauliflower mosaic virus, which affect cabbages in Europe and the US.’

‘We found that two different species of aphids, pink and green, were generally found on the diseased cabbages,’ says Fening. ‘It turned out this was the first record of the green aphid species ever being seen in Ghana.’ The pink aphid was identified as Myzus persicae (Sulzer).

What’s more, the virus was not what they expected, and work is now ongoing to identify the culprit. The sooner it can be characterised, the sooner sustainable crop protection strategies can be developed to prevent further spread of the disease not only in Ghana, but also in other countries in the region. Another researcher who hopes that eradication strategies will be the outcome of her research project is Dr Theresa Manful. Like Fening, she is a researcher at the University of Ghana. She has been working with Cambridge biochemist Professor Mark Carrington on a disease known as trypanosomiasis.

‘This is a major constraint to cattle fearing in Africa,’ she explains. ‘Although trypanosomiasis is also a disease of humans, the number of cases is low, and the more serious concerns about the disease relate to the economic impact on agricultural production.’

The parasite that causes the disease is carried by the tsetse fly, which colonises vast swathes of sub-Saharan Africa. Carrington says that a lot is now known about the parasite’s molecular mechanisms, in particular the way it evades the immune system of the animal acting as its host by altering the proteins in its coat so as to remain ‘invisible’. ‘But then when you look at the effect on large animals, you realise that there is almost nothing known about the dynamics of an infection, and even whether an infection acquired at an early age persists for its lifetime,’ he says. So Manful and Carrington set about testing cattle in Ghana. They discovered that nearly all were infected most of the time.

For Manful, one of the important gains has been the ability to expand the research in Ghana: ‘I now have a fully functional lab and can do DNA extraction and analysis in Ghana -1 don’t have to bring samples to Cambridge. We are teaching students from five Ghanaian institutions the diagnostic methods.’

‘Agriculture faces increasing challenges,’ adds Carr. ‘Bioscience is playing a crucial part in developing ways to mitigate pest impact and reduce the spread of parasites. We want to ensure not only that every harvest is successful, but also that it’s maximally successful.’

Information on Photocopying

In Information Services provide a Prepaid Services Card system for student and staff use of photocopiers and associated equipment in the Library, and use of laser printers in B Block. The same system has recently been installed in the Student Representative Council (SRC) for use with photocopiers there.

The system uses a plastic card similar to a keycard. Each card, called a ‘Prepaid Services Card’, has a unique, six-digit account number that accesses the system. Initially, students and other users will have to purchase a Prepaid Services Card from a teller machine located in the Library or B Block Computer Labs. The Prepaid Services Card costs $2.00. It is important that you keep a record of your card’s account number and sign your name or write your student ID number on the card.

Users prepay for Library, Computer Lab or SRC services by adding value to their Prepaid Services Card. There are no refunds, so only add value for the amount of prepaid services you intend to use. The maximum amount of prepaid services or value that can be added to a card is $50.00.

Two note and coin teller machines have been installed, one in the photocopy room on Level 2 of the Library and the other in the B Block Computer Labs. These teller machines accept any denomination of coins or notes up to $50.00. The SRC has a smaller, coin only, teller machine.

When a new card is purchased, the Library and B Block Computer Labs teller machines automatically issue a receipt to the user. However, when adding credit to your existing card the printing of receipts is optional.

For added security, a card user may choose to allocate a PIN or Personal Identification Number to their Prepaid Services Card. The PIN must then be entered each time the card is used.

Questions 22-27 Do the following statements agree with the information given in the passage on the previous page? In boxes 22-27 on your answer sheet write

TRUE                           if the statement agrees with the information FALSE                         if the statement contradicts the information NOT GIVEN              if there is no information on this

22. Prepaid Services Cards are in use in three locations. 23. You can only buy a Prepaid Services Card at the Library. 24. The smallest amount that can be added to the Prepaid Services Card at the Library teller machine is $5. 25. The Prepaid Services Card can be used to pay library fines. 26. Notes and coins can be used in all teller machines. 27. A PIN is allocated when you purchase your Prepaid Services Card.

List of Headings i Bee behaviour is a mystery ii Communicating direction when outside a hive iii How bees carry food on their bodies iv Von Frisch discovers that bees communicate v How bees communicate direction when inside a hive vi The special position of bee language vii Expressing distance by means of dance viii The purpose of the two simple dances ix The discovery that bees have a special scent x Von Frisch discovers three types of dance

Understanding Bee Behaviour

A A bee’s brain is the size of a grass seed, yet in this tiny brain are encoded some of the most complex and amazing behavioural patterns witnessed outside humankind. For bees are arguably the only animals apart from humans which have their own language. Earlier this century Karl von Frisch, a professor of Zoology at Munich University, spent decades of ‘the purest joy of discovery’ unravelling the mysteries of bee behaviour. For his astonishing achievements he was awarded the Nobel Prize and it is from his work that most of today’s knowledge of what bees say to each other derives.

B It started simply enough. Von Frisch knew from experiments by an earlier researcher that if he put out a bowl of sweet sugar syrup, bees might at first take some time to find it but, once they had done so, within the hour, hundreds of other bees would be eagerly taking the syrup. Von Frisch realised that, in some way, messages were being passed on back at the hive”, messages which said, ‘Out there, at this spot, you’re going to find food.’

C But how was it happening? To watch the bees, von Frisch constructed a glass-sided hive. He found that, once the scout bees arrived back at the hive, they would perform one of three dance types. In the first type, a returning scout scampered in circles, alternating to right and left, stopping occasionally to regurgitate food samples to the excited bees chasing after her. In the second dance, clearly an extended version of this round dance, she performed a sickle-shaped figure-of-eight pattern instead. In the third, distinctly different dance, she started by running a short distance in a straight line, waggling her body from side to side, and returning in a semi-circle to the starting point before repeating the process. She also stopped from time to time to give little bits of food to begging bees. Soon the others would excitedly leave the hive in search of food. Minutes later, many of them, marked by von Frisch, could be seen eating at the bowls of sugar syrup.

D Experimenting further, von Frisch unravelled the mystery of the first two related types, the round and the sickle dances. These dances, he concluded, told the bees simply that, within quite short distances of the hive there was a food source worth chasing. The longer and more excitedly the scout danced, the richer the promise of the food source. The scent she carried in her samples and on her body was a message to the other bees that this particular food was the one they were looking for. The others would then troop out of the hive and fly in spiralling circles ‘sniffing’ in the wind for the promised food.

E At first, von Frisch thought the bees were responding only to the scent of the food. But what did the third dance mean? And if bees were responding only to the scent, how could they also ‘sniff down’ food hundreds of metres away from the hive, food which was sometimes downwind? On a hunch, he started gradually moving the feeding dish further and further away and noticed as he did so, that the dances of the returning scout bees also started changing. If he placed the feeding dish over nine metres away, the second type of dance, the sickle version, came into play. But once he moved it past 36 metres, the scouts would then start dancing the third, quite different, waggle dance.

The measurement of the actual distance too, he concluded, was precise. For example, a feeding dish 300 metres away was indicated by 15 complete runs through the pattern in 30 seconds. When the dish was moved to 60 metres away, the number dropped to 11.

F Von Frisch noted something further. When the scout bees came home to tell their sisters about the food source, sometimes they would dance outside on the horizontal entrance platform of the hive, and sometimes on the vertical wall inside. And, depending on where they danced, the straight portion of the waggle dance would point in different directions. The outside dance was fairly easy to decode: the straight portion of the dance pointed directly to the food source, so the bees would merely have to decode the distance message and fly off in that direction to find their food.

G But by studying the dance on the inner wall of the hive, von Frisch discovered a remark-able method which the dancer used to tell her sisters the direction of the food in relation to the sun. When inside the hive, the dancer cannot use the sun, so she uses gravity instead. The direction of the sun is represented by the top of the hive wall. If she runs straight up, this means that the feeding place is in the same direction as the sun. However, if, for example, the feeding place is 40° to the left of the sun, then the dancer would run 40° to the left of the vertical line. This was to be the first of von Frisch’s remarkable discoveries. Soon he would also discover a number of other remarkable facts about how bees communicate and, in doing so, revolutionise the study of animal behaviour generally.

Questions 35-37 The writer mentions THREE kinds of bee dance identified by von Frisch. List the name the writer gives to each dance. Use ONE WORD ONLY for each answer. Write your answers in boxes 35-37 on your answer sheet.

Answers with Explanation

Check out your CLASSIC TOURS – COACH BREAK INFORMATION reading answers below with locations and explanation given in the text.

(Suggested approach)

• Read the task rubric carefully. Only one option (A-D) is correct in each case.

• Read question 9 and the four options.

• Scan the headings in the text to see if any of them are about seating on the coach. The section entitled “Seat Allocation” refers specifically to this.

• Skim through that section of the text and find out what you have to do if you want to sit at the front of the coach.

• This paragraph focuses entirely on the importance of booking early if you want a particular seat. So the answer to question 9 is C. Although all the other options are possible, only C is stated in the text.

• Repeat this procedure with questions 10-14.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures.
