House Beautiful's Most Popular Home Tours of 2021, According to Instagram

From a cool cocktail and storage nook in Atlanta to a country superstar's sweet nursery, these spectacular snapshots raked in the most likes on our feed.

More surprising picks include a mint-chocolate-chip-colored cabana on Long Island, a cozy baby’s room in Nashville, and an elegant New England foyer.

Officially intrigued? Keep scrolling for the most-beloved interiors to grace HB ’s IG page in 2021!

The quaint cocktail nook of this colorful Atlanta home by Melanie Turner racked up the most nods by a landslide.

“It’s probably the most thoughtful project we’ve ever worked on,” the designer tells House Beautiful . “A young family, a historic house, heirlooms, and playfulness all in one.”

Exposed brick floors lend this Texas kitchen reimagined by designer Marie Flanigan and her associate, Ashlee Garner, its rustic European look.

“The overall aesthetic is one that’s layered and transitional with an underbelly of tradition,” Flanigan says of the Houston home .

Tour the home here

Just off the mudroom of this Hamptons family retreat by Lauren Wills lies a light-filled cabana replete with everything you need for a lazy afternoon on the beach.

The cheery space showcases no-fuss cement floors that make for easy cleanup.

When it came to revamping her longtime abode in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, designer Liz Caan repurposed a lot of pieces and strategically filled the historic house with whimsical art and antiques.

“I think the beauty of this home is that it's constantly evolving," she says.

Want beautiful homes? We’ve got plenty. Let’s swoon over them together.

Instagrammers swooned over this darling nursery , thoughtfully put together by Nashville-based designer April Tomlin for her close friend Lauren Akins (who happens to be married to country superstar Thomas Rhett).

"It is a real and happy home," Tomlin enthuses. "I love how much love it holds."

Liz Caan turned heads once again with this shot of her family home’s incredible kitchen , which features an enviable walk-in pantry.

“I wanted this kitchen to have some soul and wanted to be surrounded by things I love made by people I love,” she reveals.

The English-inspired kitchen and servery of this Nova Scotia new build by Philip Mitchell boasts reclaimed antique wood floors, handcrafted cabinetry, and ultradurable surfaces.

“Every drawer is divided to hold something specific, whether it’s utensils or spices,” notes the designer.

Designed by Nannette Brown , the glossy all-black kitchen of this New York City apartment oozes with high drama and sophistication.

“I’m a big believer that within a home, different rooms should evoke different feelings and purposes,” says the local designer.

The spectacular transformation of this Boston home bar by Twelve Chairs Interiors , designed for serious wine collectors who love to entertain, involved adding an extra row of cabinets and polished nickel knobs and pulls—not to mention a fun rolling ladder.

“By going all the way up, we added function and erased the unsightly void,” explains the firm’s cofounder, Miggy Mason.

Last but not least: Rounding out this year’s list is Brown Hall Design principal Colleen Bashaw’s sweet bar setup.

Replete with a little brass sink and mini fridge, the charming space seamlessly blends in with the rest of her New Jersey home ’s whimsical interiors.

Let Me Give You An Updated Home Tour!

June 10, 2021 By Mary Ann Pickett 96 Comments

Updated Home Tour

There is a mix of French antiques (we lived in Paris for two years when our kids were little) and new things.

home tour casa classica

For new looks, I like to mix up the accessories in here every few months by using things I already own.

Living Room

Mary Ann Pickett's SF Living Room

Dining Room

We purchased new dining room chairs and a table since my last home tour. And I recovered the dining bench in performance fabrics.

The  Circa Lighting chandelier is newer here. And I’m always changing the table runners and centerpiece. Not to mention the gallery wall…

 Master Bedroom

The bed linens are by Serena and Lily and linen sheets by Coyuchi. I wish this desk was really this clean right now.

Pine dressers with great storage.

It’s your basic galley rental kitchen that I’ve tried to fix up with accessories like the Roman shade and washable runner . We also got approval to paint our kitchen cabinets Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter.

Ruggable rug in rental kitchen

Our dated rental kitchen and bathrooms are a downer, so I focus on the positives like our view.

What a lovely home! The view from your kitchen is just lovely, what a beautiful sight to see every morning! Do you happen to know what color of white was used for your fireplace/mantel? I am getting my mantel upgraded by a mantel refinisher and want a classic, white traditional one that looks just like yours!

Mary Ann! I adore this updated tour. Everything looks so beautiful! Your apartment is so welcoming and lovely and your views are drop dead gorgeous. I think I saw those basketball courts in a recent commercial…now I can’t remember what it was advertising…but I loved seeing it! xo

June 10, 2021 at 8:04 pm

Hi Mary Ann, I love the update and your style is always spot on. It has to be an added advantage having that spectacular view. I see that your post is dated today, but the comments all range from 2018 – 2019, including a comment I wrote. Is something haywire? It was a great time to sell for sure. I’m relieved you are sad about it. Your Lido house was such a wonderfully charming home. xo, Karen

Thanks for the tour, I like your style. That view does make up for any little deficiencies in a rental.

Great-looking dining chairs. I assume they are comfortable or you wouldn’t have purchased. Your home does look like an inviting place in which to actually live, not just a show place.

June 10, 2021 at 11:31 am

They are comfortable, Wren, but I also added a small lumbar pillow to the back.

Your dad’s letter is something to treasure forever! Your home is beautiful and feels very welcoming. The view from your windows is stunning!

Just curious…do you have a TV?

June 10, 2021 at 10:16 am

Yes, Tricia, four of them. One to the left of the mantel in the living room (I don’t love the look of it but you’ve inspired me to show it on Instagram), one in our bedroom and little ones in the kitchen and guestroom.

May 14, 2018 at 7:45 am

Both of your homes are so full of charm! Thank you for sharing these lovely photos. Could I ask where your your sofas came from…in both homes. I have been looking for a new sofa for quite awhile and love both styles. Thank you!

January 4, 2018 at 10:47 pm

Judy, they are the same sofas but I recently had new seat cushions and slipcovers made after several years. The sofas were custom made about 12 years ago by an upholsterer in Costa Mesa, CA. They are 6′ sofas with English roll arms if you are looking online. Good luck!

' src=

January 4, 2018 at 4:34 pm

Happy New Year, Mary Ann! I love how you’re always changing things up with things you already own. You’re SF apartment is so charming and it must be such fun to live in the City. Also love your SoCa home and remember the first time I saw it in BHG magazine . . . timeless style!

How do you manage high fiber without carbs? That’s my downfall with the low carb diets. I admire your ability to skip wine. Your home is lovely and serene. Love the fireplace screen. Wish my gas fireplace had one with character!

January 4, 2018 at 4:27 pm

We are still eating good carbs like beans, carrots, apples, etc. Sort of boring but I’m trying to get into it. Making chicken/vegetable soup tonight.

Thanks so much, Susie.

' src=

January 4, 2018 at 3:17 pm

It looks wonderful – so warm and inviting.

' src=

January 4, 2018 at 3:07 pm

I have followed your blog for years! You have the best taste and style in your homes. BTW – what is the color of your walls in your SF apartment? Really looks like a perfect neutral.

January 4, 2018 at 3:36 pm

Benjamin Moore White Dove, Debra. I really like it.

Ok, I’m happy to move in. Love everything about your home including that drop-dead view of the Bay!!! You have a beautiful, refreshing, youthful and great style vision. Love it. So what is the date for me to move in?

January 4, 2018 at 3:37 pm

I would LOVE for you to come for lunch next time you are here…we need to plan something.

January 4, 2018 at 1:13 pm

It’s Benjamin Moore White Dove. Thank you. Happy New Year to you!

Perfect decor in your homes! Bay view is awesome! I appreciate seeing personal family photos displayed in some of the rooms. As a new grandma, I keep acquiring gifts of framed photos of baby…I love them, but where can I place so many tabletop & wall photo frames?! Chief is adorable!

January 4, 2018 at 3:40 pm

Thank you!! I think the key to not looking cluttered is to use larger frames and rotate the photos. And keep photos gathered rather than scattered everywhere. I love that you are called G’Ma 🙂

' src=

January 4, 2018 at 11:23 am

Love the house tour. There are many lessons to be gleaned about space and light. Each of your homes looks perfect in its space. Love to see how you have incorporated pieces from there to here. Still think your best black and white accessory is Chief!

' src=

Gorgeous home – loved every detail – especially your Boston! We have one as well – Milo. He brings so much joy to our lives. Best wishes for a wonderful and healthy 2018. Our 20 year old twin daughters are vegans and we are embracing their lifestyle and becoming more plant-based ourselves!

January 4, 2018 at 3:42 pm

I am eating s ton of fresh vegetables…but vegan is tough…have to admire their fortitude. Happy new year to you, Heidi!!!

' src=

January 4, 2018 at 11:21 am

Everything looks so polished, but yet so inviting. And I love all the black|white contrast. Beautiful!

January 4, 2018 at 3:43 pm

Well, you should see it with the pillows all scattered and dog toys everywhere 🙂 Thank you so much.

Your home is absolutely stunning! Magazine ready! Perfect! Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year! xo

Thanks, Ron! I love your home!

January 4, 2018 at 11:07 am

Both your Newport home and your SF home are lovely. Do you rent in SF? Curious, as we recently moved from our home of 35 years to rent a charming home, does your landlord allow painting and such? We haven’t rented for so long, not sure what we can do. Fortunately, the home doesn’t need much. Happy New Year! Karen

January 4, 2018 at 3:47 pm

Yes, we are renting here and they let us paint but we had to pay for it ourselves. Happy new year, Karen!

' src=

January 4, 2018 at 10:26 am

I always love your updates! So beautiful! Did you feel the earthquake this morning? My s-i-l in Sausalito sure did. Happy to hear there were no injuries. Wishing you a very Happy New Year!

January 4, 2018 at 10:18 am

Mary Ann, I love seeing before and after and how you used furniture from your Newport Beach house in your SF apartment. The one thing I spotted immediately was that beautiful painting of your Paris apartment. I couldn’t tell for a second if it was a book or what….how beautiful to have such a wonderful piece from that time in your life. It looks perfect in that spot! And your cousin painted it…even more special! Annie

January 4, 2018 at 3:49 pm

Annie, that little oil painting looks good where ever I put it, I think. Happy New Year!

' src=

January 4, 2018 at 9:29 am

I’ve loved your style in Newport Beach and San Fran and always enjoy your posts. We are currently trying to select some warm whites for our library. Could you share what color you’ve used in your apartment?

January 4, 2018 at 9:37 am

Thanks, Jen. I always like Benjamin Moore White Dove…used it in both homes.

Every time you share photos from your present and past homes, I swoon! I love how you constantly rearrange and change up accessories and it always looks amazing. Of all the blogs I follow and homes I’ve seen, yours is one I could move right into and not change a thing! Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent, Mary Ann! Happy New Year! xoxo

January 4, 2018 at 9:39 am

Gail, you are the kindest person! Thanks for not thinking I am crazy for playing with my accessories…I will just be watching television or playing with Chief and look at say, the bookcases for a few seconds, then start moving things 🙂 Happy new year!

Thank so much!! Happy new your to YOU!

January 4, 2018 at 9:11 am

I love your style. It’s elegant yet comfortable, cozy yet not precious. Your place also has amazing light, which you use to great advantage in your color selection. Also, kudos for keeping perfectly decent kitchen cupboards and just changing them to a better color. Questions: 1. Is the fireplace for wood or gas? If wood, where do you keep it? I found that to be one of the less-glamorous aspects of fireplaces (more precisely, the dirt/dust from the stocked logs and the spiders that like to live in them). 2. How do you get anything done with that view? I would be glued to the window 24/7, no matter how many years.

January 4, 2018 at 9:44 am

I try to stop once a day and appreciate the view…the best spot is standing in the foyer leading into the dining room…but there is so much light, I can’t get a good shot. It’s wood burning…but we have air quality issues here is SF, so I use Duraflame logs…they give off a little heat (Chief likes to sit by the fire when we have one lit). Do you have those type of logs…manufactured? Supposed to be cleaner. Happy New Year.

January 4, 2018 at 11:17 am

We aren’t allowed to burn fires in our fireplaces in town. Pollution! So I haven’t looked for Duraflame. Our previous house had a fireplace (and was in the countryside, so the pollution, while still there, was spread out and not regulated), and that’s where I got my fill of the dirt and spiders. Also: I love your office. Mine is about the same size but not as chic. I am taking pointers from you.

It is all so beautiful and such a wonderful transformation! Every room is livable and sophisticated. Happy New Year!

January 4, 2018 at 9:45 am

Thanks so much! We like it…always nice to come “home.”

January 4, 2018 at 9:00 am

SO CRISP AND CLEAN! I can remember that house below your first photo with the windows! The black and brown. It always stood out for me! Beautiful Post and now off to read about the 32 things……….!! XX

We still want to have you guys over!! After this no wine thing!!! 🙂

January 4, 2018 at 8:52 am

I adore your style and really enjoyed the updated home tour! Good luck on the cleanse. I have been eating well this past week – mainly because I had the flu and didn’t eat much! But being sick reminded me how important it is to eat right. That is definitely a goal for this year…but I took a little break from it this morning when my son made chocolate chip pancakes! Ooops…well, we are in the middle of a snowstorm on the east coast so I’ll give myself a little slack! Happy New Year to you! Shelley

January 4, 2018 at 9:04 am

Thanks, Shelley. Chocolate pancakes and snow outside sounds nice and cozy with your boy! Hope you feel better. A lot of people are sick right now.

Where do you store your seasonal items ? I always have a problem with that so end up not changing seasonal decor even though I would love to !

December 29, 2021 at 5:21 pm

It’s hard for me, too!!! You should see how packed the hall closet and garage are.

Self Guided Walking Tour

2022 home tour is over. take a look at a previous home tour, 2019 home tour—41st anniversary.

The 2019 tour featured four private homes plus the Mission Branch Library:

Colonial Revival

Italianate/colonial revival, spanish eclectic cottage.

The Santa Clara Historic Home Tour began in 1978 to showcase unique homes in the City and to benefit local nonprofits. A few years later the tour became a holiday event sponsored by the Historic Preservation Society of Santa Clara (HPSSC) with assistance from the Old Quad Residents’ Association (OQRA). Last year our efforts benefited the following community programs and sites: the Santa Clara Elks Lodge #2347 ENF Scholarship Fund, the Santa Clara Mission Branch Library Renovation Project & Historical Collection, the Santa Clara Central Park Library for the Heritage Pavilion, the South Bay Historic Railroad Society, the Saint Claire Hook & Ladder Historical Society, the Santa Clara Woman’s Club Adobe Restoration Project, the Bill Wilson Center-Quetzal House Upgrades, the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps and the Santa Clara Parade of Champions.

The tour demonstrates how vintage buildings have been restored to create delightful structures. Sharing these city jewels helps demonstrate the value of keeping historic neighborhoods intact. This tour has become a Santa Clara tradition. A special thank you to the dozens of volunteers who work long hours throughout the year to bring this event to our community. We appreciate City Historian Lorie Garcia’s beautifully written and thorough home histories and descriptions. Thanks also to Mary Hanel, Retired City Librarian, for her research and contributions to our program.
