Go Inside Instagram's New NYC Headquarters—the City's Hottest Private Club

By John Ortved

New York is a clubby town. We have our neighborhoods, of course. Then there’s the schools, our restaurants and dining tables, our bars. There’s the places we sweat and the routes we take (bridges and tunnels included, thanks!). Even the places we work: the finance fellas and the ever-shrinking publishing crowd; the admen who once were Madmen (now it’s more BkBoys); the service folks and the civil servant circuses that are the FDNY, NYPD, and, one assumes, DSNY.

A generation ago, beginning with SoHo House, a new kind of club cropped up downtown. It was the official kind, where you had to apply for membership, pay if you were accepted, and, despite their various gimmicks, offered little—in terms of amenities—except the opportunity to fraternize with people who were, at the end of the day, like you.

More recently, these took on a flavor of “shared workspaces”—offering desks and networking—with NeueHouse touting a creative business community, the Wing promising women an attractive, Instagrammable place to gather, and Spring Place offering the jet set an office away from theirs. At the same time, tech firms expanded from their valley of silicon to our happy, dirty little island. Google, Tumblr, and Audible all have very fancy, very tidy, very shiny homes here. The most recent incursion of sanitization comes in the form of Instagram, who this month opened its 14th floor offices in 770 Broadway, the old Wanamaker’s department store, where parent company Facebook occupies floors 2, 7, 8, and 15.

a black wall with litup Instagram logos on it

Instagram's new offices occupy the 14th floor of 770 Broadway.

While they don’t offer branded pussy hats, or the ability to rub shoulders with D-list DJs, Instagram’s design (by Gehry Partners ), amenities, and opportunities make it perhaps the finest elite organization Manhattan has to offer. There’s a fresh juice and gelato bar; a real bar, stocked with Veuve Clicquot champagne and Hendricks gin and all the good booze; there’s a library and full cafe; top business folks with whom to interface; and real celebs to gawk at (Victoria Beckham, Priyanka Chopra, and Queer Eye guys have stopped by, among others). Oh, and unlike SoHo House ($2,100–$3,200 annually), the Wing ($1,950 annually) or NeueHouse ($200–$1,600 monthly), they pay you. Often hundreds of dollars per hour.

Let’s start with the design. The 14th floor—the second-highest in the 1862 edifice, which spans the block between 8th and 9th streets, between Lafayette Street and Broadway—is absolutely flooded in natural light. It’s as if Apollo himself “likes” the space (and productivity). Workspaces—shared desks—are on the far eastern and western sides, directly beneath giant, arched, landmarked windows, while conference rooms and public spaces are central.

The space is flooded with natural light and includes ’gram-ready backdrops like this living green wall.

“If you walk the main axes—north-south and east-west—you’ll notice that you’ll always have visual connection to a window," says Thomas Kim, one of the architects at Gehry who worked on the project. "In the middle of a 60,0000-square-foot space, you won’t feel like you’re in a cave, you’ll have a connection to the outside.”

The aim is to get people comfortable and interacting, whether they’re at their desk on the in the common areas—where you find the coffee bar and juice bar and "bar bar"—while inspiring them creatively. “Frank [Gehry] promised Mark [Zuckerberg] we would help his team work more collaboratively and efficiently to do the work they wanted. To do that, the spaces would be about them, not about us,” says Meaghan Lloyd, who oversees projects at Gehry. The result is as open a space as you can imagine, not unlike a gallery, with pockets wherein creative work is showcased and, inevitably, ’grammed.

“Obviously, we wanted to reflect on a craft-driven culture and core values,” says Kitty Bromhead, a culture lead at Instagram, who worked with Gehry Partners on the design. “One of my favorites is the atrium area. We keep it very minimal and sleek with a white wall. We’ll have rotating community art in the same space.” And there are, naturally, spaces tailor-made for snapping ’grams: a multicolored translucent dome with modular seating, a living green wall of plants that spans two floors; there is a miniature room, designed by Donatella Versace.

And then there are the amenities. Any tour of the Instagram offices is accompanied by near constant banging. This is not the sound of nails being hammered home, but that of coconuts being opened—in which the fresh juices are served. Gelato—featured flavors change weekly—is reduced to a bowl. There’s the Thirsty Flamingo (a serve-yourself liquor bar), a rooftop patio, mini-kitchens, and a daily 3 p.m. "Cookie Hunt," which is exactly what it sounds like.

There’s a first-rate studio to record your vlog or pod, a recording studio with instruments, a games room with every conceivable console, and VR stations too. There’s even a quiet library, a place for employees to relax and take in a view, helped by light oak furniture that matches the floors in the central common areas. “Borrowing from that upscale coffee shop, where you would traditionally meet a friend—having that in your office is an incredible opportunity,” says Natalie Lennox, a creative strategist at the company who is partial to the beet juice. “It leads to better ideas, more brainstorming.”

a small room with a gilt interior

There are the normal tech snacks—Pop Chips and nut bars—available in the coffee area, which is massive and includes a real, restaurant-level Nuova Simonelli espresso machine with For Five Coffee Roasters beans (and, yes, many milks). There’s yoga and meditation classes on offer, guest speakers such as Annie Tritt, who has talked about her project photographing transgender children for Pride month. And something called Analog Lab, which despite its unimaginative name, offers yet more sweet treats.

“I took a drawing course with Jon Burgerman. You get to leave your desk and be inspired by something utterly different,” said Lennox. “I followed him on Instagram for so long and then I got to work with him for an hour-and-a-half.”

Image may contain Indoors Room Living Room Human Person Furniture Shoe Clothing Footwear Apparel and Couch

In the library, employees are encouraged to relax and take in a view.

The idea here is twofold. Firstly, it’s to make work not seem like work. This seems to be having the intended effect with Ms. Lennox but also recalls a scene from Apocalypse Now, when Captain Willard, reflecting on a beach party BBQ thrown for his fellow troops in Vietnam, says, “The more they tried to make it just like home, the more they made everybody miss it." Or, put another way by a former Google employee I spoke to, “Those amenities are fantastic. But you use them maybe twice. And then you’re at work.” After your second straight month of 75-hour work weeks, the banging of the coconuts—it was truly constant—might find you far less agreeable.

a studio space with bright walls and people sitting on bright benches

Instagram employees use this state-of-the art studio for vlogging, among other things.

Secondly, they’re trying for gloss. Instagram is only worth anything if people continue to think Instagram is fun, useful, and cool. Otherwise, they look for the next thing. It’s important that we see Instagram as a fun community for art and creative expression, or else it’s just part of Facebook, a club wherein you can’t avoid running into your former high school chum who is now a devoted member of the alt-right.

Which made talking to Instagram employees about their new office a little strange. “[The design] matches our culture in what we’re aiming to build, which is a large community around the world,” one told me. (My question had been: “What’s your favorite amenity—is it the juice bar?”) Later, the same employee referred to the area by the coffee bar as “the central collaboration area,” which sounded not so inspiring. But I don’t blame them, or their PR. I would do the same.

a large juice bar with a neon sign

The Frozen Palm, where employees and their visitors can order up a gelato or juice.

Instagram itself is both an amenity—to Facebook—and a club, one that a lot of us still want to belong to. I’d rather spend my time at Instagram than at SoHo House, or NeueHouse, or the Wing, even though the last option isn’t really an option at all. Instagram has built a beautiful, thoughtful workspace that accomplishes many of its goals, whether you can get on board with the end product or not.

When Ms. Lloyd at Gehry asked me, point-blank, what I thought of it, I responded honestly: I’d like to work there. She said she’d put in a good word. But I meant the building, not Instagram. The line here is predictable—about not wanting to be part of any club that would have me as a member—a line that came from Groucho Marx. He knew what he was talking about. He was a New Yorker, too.

Inside Instagram's NYC headquarters, which has a gelato station, a stocked bar, and backdrops for capturing the perfect Instagram photo

  • Instagram recently opened a new headquarters in New York City.
  • The space features a juice and gelato bar, a living wall, plenty of room to relax and unwind, and a well-stocked bar.
  • Business Insider took a tour of the new space shortly after employees had moved in — check it out.

Insider Today

Stepping inside Instagram's brand-new New York City headquarters is like walking into a perfectly curated Instagram feed.

There's the pastel-colored juice and gelato bar where you can get a fruity beverage served in a coconut, complete with an umbrella.

There's a living wall that stretches up to the second story where you can recline on a brightly colored pouf and gaze out the large windows overlooking downtown Manhattan.

Or you can visit the library, a quiet, mid-century modern haven for reading and relaxing.

In short, Instagram's new headquarters are incredibly ... Instagrammable.

Business Insider got a chance to see the new space in person shortly after employees had moved in. Here's what it's like:

Instagram worked with architecture firm Gehry Partners to create its new headquarters. The space used to house Wanamaker's department store.

When you first arrive, you're greeted by a huge digital greeting wall. The screens change constantly to display photos from Instagram users.

When Instagram first opened its NYC office in 2015, it had three employees working there at the time. Now, Instagram expects to have 350 people there by the end of the year.

More than a third of Instagram's engineering team will be based in New York by the end of 2018.

Visitors to Instagram HQ have the option to snap a photo inside this colorful dome. The furniture inside is modular and can be moved around so you can capture your shot.

You can also grab a gelato in one of more than 20 flavors. Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said employees have started keeping track of how many days in a row they've eaten gelato.

Where Ideas Come From: Inside Instagram's Headquarters

With this post, we're kicking off a new occasional photo feature that will take you inside of the headquarters of today's top tech companies, from the big multinationals to the young startups of Silicon Valley.  If you'd like to participate in this project, or want to suggest a company you think we should cover, email me at njackson[at]theatlantic[dot]com.

A free photo sharing application that has been called "the hottest iPhone startup right now," Instagram operates out of Twitter's old office at 164 South Park St. in the South Park neighborhood of San Francisco. The company, founded without a business model or any specific financing in mind, has quickly grown: It now has more than four million users sharing photos through the app and posting them to a variety of social networks such as Foursquare, Twitter and Posterous. It has just four employees.

From tripod positioning to maximizing natural light, these seven tips explain how to optimize your virtual office tour.

instagram office tour

This article was originally published by Allwork.Space .

Virtual office tours are experiencing a boom, for obvious reasons. But the savviest operators were leveraging this technology way before the pandemic hit.

Known in the marketing world as ‘sticky content’, virtual tours engage prospective members by enabling them to experience your location without leaving your website. Sure, they’ll likely want to come see it in person too, but it means they will do so as a more ‘qualified’ prospect.

What is a Virtual Tour?

A virtual tour, also referred to as a 360 panoramic tour or 3D virtual tour, shouldn’t be confused with a video tour. Video tours are a very effective marketing tool but they differ in that they only allow website visitors to see the point of view of the presenter or videographer.

Virtual office tours, on the other hand, provide visitors with control over their perspective, enabling them to zoom in on features and explore at their own pace.

Panoramic tours are created using a series of photographs or videos taken from one vantage point. The camera’s lens rotates around the ‘no parallax point’ – the specific point at the back of the lens where the light converges.

There are lots of companies out there who can create a virtual office tour for you, so don’t be afraid to outsource. If you decide to have a go yourself, you’ll need a camera which can shoot 360° panoramic footage remotely and virtual tour software (or an app).

instagram office tour

How to Optimize Your 360 Virtual Office Tour:

1. plan your virtual office tour shots.

Compose a list of the areas in your workspace you’d like to include in your virtual tour – private offices, coworking areas, breakout spaces, kitchens, roof terraces, etc. Find a vantage point in each area that will enable you to capture all of its features. You could use the centre of the room. Failing that, select a more convenient spot and mark it with tape.

2. Prepare each space

Once you’ve planned the camera positions in each area, it’s time to prepare the room for the recording.  Remove anything that will obstruct the camera’s view, tidy up by organising desks and chairs neatly and take anything that might distract the viewer out of the shot. People like to work in environments with lots of natural light, so be sure to open any blinds.

3. Level your tripod

For image consistency and to ensure straight angles, you’ll need to make sure your tripod is level in every shot. Your tripod might come with its own spirit level – simply adjust the legs until the bubble is in the middle. If it doesn’t, you can download a leveling app using your smartphone.

4. Practice your shots

Practice makes perfect, as the old saying goes. Before uploading your content, take practice shots of each part of your workspace and analyse them. The first thing to look out for is whether you can see your camera’s reflection in windows or mirrors.

If so, you’ll need to reposition your camera. Likewise, check for any distractions or darkness that will compromise the quality of your virtual office tour.

5. Take your photos

Once you’ve demo-ed your technology and framing, it’s time to get stuck in. Find the vantage point that you’ve marked out in each room, set up the tripod and take the pictures. You can check images as you go and retake photos before moving to the next area. It’s better to have a selection to choose from than too few.

6. Upload your photos

Use your chosen virtual tour software or app to connect the images together and complete your virtual office tour. You’ll have to upload your images and follow the prompts. Lots of programs enable you to optimize the viewers experience by adding features such as interactive links, audio descriptions, floor plans and music.

7. Share your virtual office tour

Embed the virtual tour into your website and share it across your social media channels. You can share a link to it in emails to any prospective members that come your way and you can also generate a QR code that links directly to the virtual tour when scanned.

Virtual Office Tour Examples

Staying up-to-date with the latest marketing and technology trends is important if you want to remain relevant in a competitive landscape.

Don’t be afraid to experiment and ask your peers for guidance when needed. Before embarking on your own virtual office tour journey, take a look at how other operators are utilizing the technology: check out Mindspace  in Bucharest and  Knotel , in London, for instance.

Inside Instagram’s San Francisco Headquarters

Array

San Francisco

April 9th, 2012 was a very special day for most tech-obsessed people, because during that day Facebook announced, that it buys Instagram for $1 billion. And even though billion-dollar deals seem pretty much normal nowadays, back then it was something absolutely special.

Today it has been more than 2 years since the acquisition and the truth is that Instagram still keeps going strong…actually it grows even faster than Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook combined!

Despite this massive growth, Instagram still keeps its trendy and vintage looking San Francisco-based headquarters, which were made by Geremia Design. So let’s skip the numbers for now and take a look inside…

“The design for the Instagram office was inspired by their branding. We created a custom coffee station, built an inventory of retro furniture, and curated a vintage camera collection, which is on display on the lobby”, says Geremia Design

Instagram travel pages that tour & activity operators should follow

  • Tourism Marketing

In June 2018, Instagram announced that they had reached 1 billion active users . This figure is almost triple of those on Twitter, who in Q1 2018 reached 336 million, and 10 times the amount of Snapchat who currently have 100 million active users.

The social platform reported that there were 15 million active business profiles on Instagram in July 2017. By November of the same year, this figure had leaped to   25 million active accounts .

According to   TechCrunch , Instagram claims the majority of these accounts are owned by small businesses, and  one in three say they have built their businesses using the platform.  Vishal Shah , Director of Product for Instagram Business, added: "b usinesses that are natively born on Instagram often do the best on the platform."

Instagram states that  80% of user accounts on the platform follow a business page , and their 200 million daily active users visit at least one business profile every day. According to Vishal Shah, ‘two-thirds of visits to business profiles come from users who don’t follow that profile’ so the potential reach is huge.

With business profiles becoming a prominent sales tool, I’ve listed my 5 favorite Instagram travel business pages for  tour & activity operators to  follow for inspiration:

1. Australia - Tourist Organisation

Followers: 3.1 Million

This Instagram page is the official business account for Australia's tourist organisation. It has a massive following of 3.1 million, so large that no other DMO comes close in comparison.

Posts on this page average around 100,000 likes, and it's no surprise with the quality of their content and imagery.  Every photo showcases Australia's beautiful colors, nature and wildlife.

Australia Tourism2

What I  like about this page, apart from the beautiful imagery, is the refreshing humor on each post. It is creative and engaging.  This is a takeaway for your own Instagram page. You should show personality and write posts in the voice of your company. This is a great way to interact with your followers.

Australia Tourism

2. STA Travel - Travel Agency

Followers: 91.1K

STA Travel is the worlds largest travel agency for student and young travelers. Around 59% of Instagram users are between 18-29 years old, so Instagram is the perfect platform for this company to reach their audience.

STA Travel 2

On Instagram, STA Travel has created the  hashtag '#StartTheAdventure'. This is a really smart marketing tool. The agency promotes for their followers to share travel photography using the hashtag.  STA Travel will then re-post these onto their own Instagram page. This method increases interaction with followers, plus the agency now has a range of images to use without doing any of the work.

For tour & activity operators, this is a great way to have a constant stream of new photography/videos from your customers and is a lot easier than having to organize and pay for a photographer.

STA Travel

3. Alex Strohl - Influencer

Followers: 1.9 Million

Alex Strohl is a French photograph, who happens to have one of the most followed photographer accounts in the world.  His photography has been featured in Vanity Fair, Buzzfeed and on Land Rover campaigns.

Due to his massive following, Alex Strohl is classed as a social media influencer. His posts can impact and influence people across the world. Reports suggest that when a consumer sees a photo from a person rather than a brand, they have a   4.5% higher chance of conversion . This number increases to 9.6% if they interact with the photo.

A social media influencer is a user on social media who has established credibility in a specific industry. A social media influencer has access to a large audience and can persuade others by virtue of their authenticity and reach.

Alex Strohl 2

Alex does 'paid partnerships' with tourist organisations to promote the destination to travelers... And he’s not the only one doing this.  In March 2018, there were around  1.1 million influencers in the world , i ncluding photographers, solo explores, family travelers and adventure enthusiasts.

This could be a high return form of advertisement for your tours & activities if planned and executed well.  I'd suggest first looking at influencers with an audience of over 5,000 followers who can enjoy your tour for free in exchange for a tagged Instagram post.

AlexStrohl

4. Airbnb - Marketplace

Followers: 3.1 Million

Airbnb is a large online marketplace for short-term leasing or renting accommodation. With over 150 million users and 4 million listings, Instagram is just another string to the Airbnb marketing bow.

Airbnb post photographs of travelers enjoying their experiences or listed properties. Every post has a  geo-tag with the location of where the photograph was taken.  According to research , posts that tag a location receive 79% higher engagement than those without.

Airbnb 2

Tour & activity operators should a lways add a geo-tag to photos, videos and stories on Instagram, and also include the location name as a hashtag within the post. Your  content will then appear when an Instagram user is doing research or is in the location.

Airbnb

5. Margaret River Discovery Co. - Guided Tours

Followers: 21.5k

Margaret River Discovery Company offers wine and guided tours to travelers visiting the Australian region. Their Instagram account is one of the highest followed tour companies in the world. This is due to their high visitor numbers and posts of  customers genuinely enjoying their tours.

In marketing, we know that people like to see people enjoying a product or experience. On Instagram, it’s no different. In fact, Instagram   photos that feature faces get 38% more likes t han those without.

Margaret River 2

This is another way to show the personality of your company on your Instagram page. You can show how you interact with your customers, and how your staff also enjoy the tours & activities. Customers will follow your page to see their photos and will then share these with their followers.

Margaret River
