Small Group Sicily Food & Wine Tour (Maximum 8 Guests)
From the time we lasted until we were dropped off, the whole tour was beyond excellent. The food and wine tours were varied from small plates at different restaurants to large meals at scenic settings. We ate at a seaport and at a farm house (the setting was far from rustic), in markets, and wineries. We had a cooking class where we prepared a traditional Sicilian meal. We stayed in wonderful hotels and had terrific tour guides. The tours were fabulous but they were short enough to allow for sometime to explore on our own. I would highly recommend this well managed and well planned tour.

Taste of Salento-Authentic Culinary Experience
The De Matteis family could not have been more welcoming. I met interesting people from New Zealand, New York and Sydney and a couple of walkers from Seattle joined us one evening. We visited amazing sights and ate and drank local food every day. I swam in the pool and learned how to make the perfect spaghetti carbonara.

Private Sicily Food & Wine Lovers Tour
Massimo of Sicily Activities was wonderful to work with. He always answered right away, and took care of EVERYTHING throughout the trip--even things that weren't strictly part of the tour. We were a private group of 15. PALERMO: The hotel was wonderful and Fabrizio was a great guide for the food tour. Luca was a great driver to Monreale and Cefalu'. Larisa was a good guide for the Monreale cathedral and Lisabeta in Cefalu' was fantastic--and the restaurant was, too. Claudio, our driver to Agrigento and Siracusa was excellent. The guide at Valley of the Temples was good. An amazing place. SIRACUSA: The hotel was lovely and in a great location. Both guides in Ortigia were great--Valerio for the walking tour and Paolo for the foodie dinner--what a fun man. Paolo, the driver to Noto, Villa Romana del Casale and Taormina was fantastic. Saro was an excellent guide in Noto and Mt Etna. Lunches in both Noto and Piazza Amerina were delicious. Patrizia, the guide for Villa Romana, was wonderful, especially when we needed an ambulance for one of the women to go to the hospital. And dear Massimo even arranged a taxi for me from the hospital back to Siracusa (about an hour and half away). The driver was the nicest man! TAORMINA: Another very nice hotel. Our guide for the walking tour was really good. She was patient as we were a little late getting ready to start the tour, but she still took us to the Greek Theatre in the rain and wind. The tour to Mt Etna was fabulous--both the tasting and the lunch. Massimo even arranged a pizza-making class when weather prevented us from going on our scheduled boat ride. In summary, there was nothing Massimo could have done better. And this is at a time when all the tour directors were overwhelmed with bookings. He was a standout!
Discover Matera and Taste of Salento Tour
SOLETO TRAVEL: First of all, Omar at Soleto Travel was great, from my first inquiry to the last day of the trip. He returned emails promptly, answered questions clearly, made suggestions and generally made the whole experience very easy. I highly recommend Soleto travel and would not hesitate to book any of their tours. The trip I took was Discover Matera and a Taste of Salento. I was a solo female traveler on this tour and just took a leap of faith - it was well worth it. TASTE OF SALENTO: Pretend that someone told you that you had long lost relatives who owned an olive oil farm in Salento and wanted you to come visit for six days? That is exactly what this felt like. From the moment Antonio (the father) picked me up at the train station to the moment Emilio dropped me off in Matera, I could not have been treated more warmly. This did not feel like a “tour”, it felt like a “stay”. Don’t get caught up in the printed itinerary and stated activities. Emilio adjusts the schedule based on the season, the weather and other circumstances. You might not get every single thing listed, but you will get a lot more that are not. Emilio fixes a light breakfast every morning and explains where we’re going and what we’re doing that day. Because this experience is capped at four people (we had two), Emilio drives you in the family car to all the cool places (many that would be inaccessible by a tour bus). You walk around while he explains the history of the place or his experiences there. You set the pace (the other woman in my tour had hurt her foot and couldn’t walk very fast - no problem. We were still able to see everything). And you get free time to walk around, grab a bite, shop or just sit and appreciate the experience. The highlight of every day was dinner. Emilio is a fabulous chef and prides himself on cooking fresh, organic, local food paired with local wine (all served with his family’s organic olive oil of course). His passion is evident and every meal was excellent. Two of the days we had Carlo as a guide, who was fun and knowledgeable. One day Emilio’s wife Clara took us wine tasting and sightseeing. And of course Antonio, who was a character, popped by to say hi and stir up trouble! I could go on and on but I will stop and just say this: If you want a 4-star hotel with a “farm” theme in a big city, this is not for you. This is an actual farm in a very small town with very comfortable accommodations run by a sweet and generous couple (plus four kids and a dog) who want nothing more than for you to learn about, experience, and hopefully appreciate, the land they love. No tour buses, no guides with hankies tied to poles, no one-size-fits-all restaurants or cookie-cutter tours. Live like a local, with locals, for a one-of-a-kind experience. I highly recommend it. DISCOVER MATERA: I knew nothing about Matera so I was excited to arrive and see this beautiful city. The only thing I would mention is the whole city is practically stairs, including up to the room, so it might be a difficult city for some people with mobility issues so keep that in mind when booking. That said it is such a beautiful and unique city and I loved just wandering around and getting lost in all the little streets and passages. The accommodations were fabulous and so unique (a room built into a cave!) My guide was Cosimo, who took me one day on a city tour and the next on a tour of Murgia Materana, the park across the ravine. He was so knowledgable, friendly and patient with all my questions. Even though I was the only one, our tour went beyond the allotted time and he did not complain or try to rush me. I also got a private food and wine tasting with Lucca who was also wonderful, knowledgeable and generous. The place I stayed had a restaurant, but because I was the only one there, I would have my breakfast on site and then they would book dinner for me at a nice local restaurant. I loved Matera and wish I had a couple more days there. All in all this was the perfect vacation. The people were wonderful, the food and wine delicious, the history fascinating, the scenery breathtaking and the experience unique. I highly recommend this tour and Soleto Travel to anyone!
Charming Sicily Food & Wine Small Group Tour - 8 days
Overall our tour was wonderful. We had a great time. Denise, especially was a very good guide, very knowledgable and personable. The cooking class and our Palermo Street Food tour was, probably my favorites. A few areas that could have been improved upon: - A little more communication prior to the tour would have been reassuring. In this day of fraud it is a little unnerving to send all that money into the internet and not get much of a response. - The final communication, our itinerary, was a definite problem. We were told by Tour Radar that we would receive it 10-14 days before we left. The tour operator (ClickTours/Mossimo) told us we would receive it 8 days before we left. I finally called Tour Radar 6 days before we left
Sicily Food Adventure
Sicily was great, the transportation was very good, fellow passengers were a great bunch who mixed well. Food and wine experiences were good, but for me the highlight of the trip was ancient and modern Sicily. The tour guide was lovely and tried very hard but with limited English understanding, was not able to provide any significant on board commentary or quell the frustrations that accrued as we drove from place to place. Accommodation throughout the tour was average to good and the weather was just perfect.

South Italy Campania Escape
Hotel room was large and comfortable = 5* Hotel location was difficult : NO buses, NO subway close by. We had to walk a LOT , even to reach meeting points for daily tours !! (2*) Staff was VERY friendly and helpful. (5*) TOUR to POMPEI / VESUVIO was excellent, considering the conditions... Excellent LUNCH and wine testing (5*) We did the VESUVIO hike, all the way to the TOP ! (5*) TOUR of NAPOLI was good. / We saw many more places, and took the subway (5*) Note : we had problems with the street food . Difficult to find good, relaxing places to have dinner in NAPOLI. ..Next time we will consult a TOUR GUIDE BOOK.

Northern Italy Gourmet Luxury Tour - 8 Days
Everything about our tour was just amzingly great... from the tours, to the arrangements, to our chaufered driven Mercedes. One suggestion about our last stay at Locandia Marquesi di Alfieri. It is a very small village, and no nearby restaurant open on Mondays. Without a vehicle, it can be difficult, so it would be good to inform your clients. Also, the goodbye dinner was at Blue Rose, which would require a walk down to and back up the steep road. At night it can be a challenge and even dangerous, with no sidewalks. I would suggest either Osteria il Re degli Ignoranti or Ristorante Concordia, which are much closer to the Locandia Marquesi di Alfieri Hotel.

What people love about food & culinary tours in italy.
I can’t say enough good things about our experience in Sicily thanks to Mossimo and his team. Excellent, informative tour guides…Denise, Carlos, Antonio and Sem. The cooking class may have been the highlight, but all of the activities were fun and the pace of the tour, planned activities/free time mix was perfect. Will definitely recommend!
Continued.. Besides both Carla and Emilios own knowlege and history of each place they had Profesional guides to take you around to the other places. Nice to be in a private car. Great food like I said before. Emilio really takes care and you can see the passion in every dish he makes. Very well put together tour. Loved my stay at the farmhouse learning about the olive trees. Overall a Wonderful experience during my week in brindisi. Will visit again! Crystal

- Rae B 3 contributions 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles Worth Every Penny! This wine tour was fantastic! Such a magical day going to various Villa's throughout the Chianti region. Our tour guide, Alessandro, was extremely knowledgable on wine, the grapes, and the history of wine production within Chianti and Italy. Amazing storyteller, so captivating! Each stop we got to do a tasting from wines made locally on the property, as well as sample different meats and cheeses. The lunch spot was truly a standout with the most incredible picturesque Tuscan views you could imagine! And the family style Tuscan meal with the whole group was a real treat! The large off-terrain bus that we were on was really sleek and you see why that kind of vehicle is needed as you climb the hills to the various locations. Would highly recommend booking this tour, total standout on our Italy trip! - The cuisine of Italy includes a lot of meat and seafood. For vegetarians and vegans, we recommend reviewing the itinerary and inclusions to ensure that you will be able to fully participate and enjoy this trip. We also have many other trips to Italy which can accommodate a range of dietary requirements.
- The primary means of transportation on this trip is by train. Trains are comfortable and all have toilets but can be quite busy. You'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the train, so make sure it doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find this information in the 'Packing' section of the Essential Trip Information.
- Don’t let the heat keep you from exploring the world! Summer temperatures can be extreme in many of the regions visited (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s essential to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
Buongiorno! Welcome to Italy. Your adventure starts in the iconic city of Venice. If you arrive early, take some time to get lost in the narrow cobblestone streets and spacious piazzas, crossing the tiny bridges to find shops, markets, galleries and churches. Stroll past St Mark’s Square, the Campanile and the Doges Palace. Cross the Rialto and admire the Bridge of Sighs. You’ll have a welcome meeting tonight at 6 pm. After, head out for a welcome aperitivo – the spritz and the bellini are local favourites. Venice's distinctive culinary heritage goes back to ancient times and features rich risottos, saline baccala (salted cod) and creamy polenta. If you're hungry, follow your leader to an atmospheric restaurant for your first introduction to Venetian flavours.

There are no meals included on this day.
- Venice - Welcome Aperitivo
It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.
It's an early start today. Walk down to the canals and watch farmers unload their produce from canal boats, ready to be sold at Venice's famous Rialto markets. This tradition is more than 1000 years old. Next, you’ll swing past the fish market, where the day’s catch might come directly from the Venetian lagoon – the enclosed bay of the Adriatic Sea. Finish with an Italian cafe alongside the market. You'll also be treated to a specialty dessert of the region – tiramisu. The afternoon is free for your own exploration. In the evening, discover the Venetian answer to tapas on a cicchetti crawl through the city's fabulous bacari (wine bars). Snacking is an important pastime in Venice, with many people stopping for cicchetti both before and after meals.

Italy Food Tour: The Best Places to Visit for Foodies
David Angel
An Italy food tour is many people’s idea of heaven, mine included. There’s no single Italian cuisine as such: Italian food really encompasses around twenty different regional cuisines. The one thing they’ve all had in common, for me, is that they’re mouth-wateringly fantastic.
After many Italy vacations, I decided to devise this ultimate indulgence, a culinary tour of Italy, taking in seven top Italian destinations. You’d get to see the best of each, and also experience the best Italian cooking and regional dishes.
This is a tour of Italy that can take as long as you wish. I’ve suggested places to see in each city, and what local dishes to try and where. We’ll be covering everything from the best cicchetti in Venice to the best pizza in Naples, and the best Bologna food tour to the most scrumptious Sicilian street food.
The itinerary is also a series of suggestions. You could just stick to one area, and Sicily holidays based around sampling Sicilian cuisine would be amazing. Or you could combine several, building a Tuscany itinerary around trying a bistecca in Florence or cacciucco seafood stew in Livorno. We suggest an Italy food tour package, as well as city food tours to get you started at each destination.
However you choose to do it, trying the best in traditional Italian food in some of the best places to visit in Italy is a wonderful way to experience the country.
Table of Contents
1. Italy Food Tour – Food in Venice
What to eat in Venice : Sarde in saor; risotto al nero di seppia; cicchetti
Where to eat in Venice: Le Bistrot de Venise; Osteria al Squero in Dorsoduro and Trattoria da Romano on Burano
What to See in Venice: St Mark’s Square and Basilica, San Giorgio Maggiore, the Doge’s Palace, and exploring the canals and back streets
How Many Days in Venice: Three or four, ideally
Venetian cuisine is based around local produce: seafood from the lagoon and Adriatic, vegetables from the lagoon islands and hinterland, and rice.
There are thousands of restaurants in Venice serving food from all over Italy and beyond, but I’ve found over many visits that eating local is best.
Bars all over the city serve cicchetti (sometimes spelt cicheti), bar snacks along the lines of Spanish tapas, albeit with different ingredients. These include seafood, local ham, cheeses, sausages, and vegetables including delicious artichokes from nearby Sant’Erasmo, the garden island that’s as far off the beaten path in Venice as you can go.
Many signature Venice dishes originate from the sea, of course. They include sarde in saor , sardine with raisins, onions and pine nuts marinated in vinegar. We’ve also loved risotto al nero di seppia , cooked in black cuttlefish ink. A friend bought us a Venetian cookbook after visiting the city with us, and the leek risotto from that has become one of our home menu mainstays the last few years.
Venture out into the lagoon to the island of Burano , and one of the restaurants there, Trattoria da Romano, serves another local delicacy, risotto di gò , which includes the black goby fish that lives near the lagoon bed.
2. Food in Bologna, Modena & Parma
What to eat in Bologna : Tagliatelle al ragù, lasagne, prosciutto crudo (Parma ham) con melone, tortellini pasta, Parmesan cheese
Where to eat in Bologna : Trattoria Valerio, Buca Manzoni and the tavola calda at Tamburini. There are hundreds of other places around the Quadrilatero
What to See in Bologna : Piazza Maggiore, Torre degli Asinelli, the University, Basilica di San Petronio and the Quadrilatero
How Many Days in Bologna : Three for Bologna alone – you’ll need more if you want to make day trips from there
Bologna is food heaven. The sauce that’s many people’s introduction to Italian food bears its name, Bolognese. However, this sauce – known locally as ragù – tastes very different – and much better – in its place of origin.
My wife took me to Bologna for a recent birthday, and food-wise it was like all my birthdays and Christmases rolled into one. The city is the capital of the region of Emilia-Romagna, which many would suggest is the best region in Italy for food. Modena (home of the delectable balsamic vinegar of Modena) and Parma (Parma ham and Parmesan cheese, or parmigiano reggiano ) are both easy day trips from Bologna . It’s a popular starter across the world, but try the Parma ham and melon starter somewhere. We never tire of the salty yin and sweet yang of this simple but stunning dish.
Bologna is a very beautiful city, quite distinctive in appearance because of its red brick buildings and porticoed streets. Food lovers should head for the Quadrilatero, a small area of narrow streets between the Asinelli and Garisenda towers and Piazza Maggiore. The city also gave the world mortadella sausage and tortellini, the ring (or navel!) shaped pasta you see all over the world.
3. Food in Florence
What to Eat in Florence: Ribollita, Bistecca alla fiorentina
Other Tuscan Food To Try: Farro soup in Lucca, panforte from Siena
What To See in Florence : Duomo, Baptistery and Campanile; Cappelle Medicee in San Lorenzo Church; Michelangelo’s original David in the Accademia; the Galleria Uffizi
Where to Eat in Florence:
How Many Days in Florence : Three
There is such a wealth of Tuscan cuisine to discover, and every time I return I seem to discover even more.
Florence is among the best places to stay in Tuscany , as it’s easy to branch out from there to the other main cities and towns.
One of my favourite Tuscan dishes is ribollita , the sort of dish you cobble together with whatever’s left in the kitchen cupboard. Its staple ingredients are stale bread and cannellini beans. What comes with this tends to vary from place to place, but usually includes a hearty, healthy selection of vegetables.
Florence’s signature dish is bistecca alla fiorentina , an enormous and delicious T-bone steak cooked rare. It would be bordering on sacrilege to ask for it to be cooked ‘well done’. Chef will almost certainly refuse your request to cremate such a beautiful piece of meat. It’s normally served with a selection of contorni – vegetables – including garlic potatoes.
The Chianti wine region is just to the south of Florence, with many a fine accompaniment to Tuscan food to choose from. Further south, the sublime medieval city of Siena is home to panforte , a delicious rich flat fruitcake.
Some of the best food in Tuscany can also be found to the west of Tuscany, with the truffles of San Miniato and the delightful olive oil and zuppa di farro – similar to wheat – from Lucca.
4. Food in Livorno
What to Eat in Livorno: Cacciucco fish stew
Where to Eat in Livorno: La Barocciaia; Osteria del Mare
What To See in Livorno: Piccola Venezia; the grand Terrazza Mascagni seafront promenade
How Many Days in Livorno: Two.
The port city of Livorno is the least-known destination on our gastronomy of Italy tour. However, it’s home to one of the best surprises in the country: cacciucco , an outstanding seafood stew. It’s up there with the better-known bouillabaisse of Provence and Portugal’s caldeirada and cataplana .
Recipes vary greatly, with some using red wine, others white. Garlic, parsley and tomatoes form the basis of the sauce, and the fish can vary, depending on the catch and season. Mussels, clams, prawns and baby octopus often feature, as do gurnard, sea bass, monkfish and sole. It’s then served with bread brushed with garlic.
Livorno is one of the hidden gems of Italy, very much overlooked and underrated. Many of its buildings were lost during heavy bombing in World War II, but it has held onto its multicultural identity from its time as a free port, when it was also known as Leghorn. It was a real Mediterranean melting-pot, with sailors from all over Europe frequenting the port’s bars.
The best things to do in Livorno include exploring Piccola Venezia (Little Venice), the atmospheric canals and streets close to the port. The Mercato Centrale (Central Market) is the largest in Italy, and where the daily catch is sold on. The artist Amedeo Modigliani had a workshop upstairs in the building.
Livorno port is an arrival point for cruise passengers who are then whisked away to Florence for the day. Livorno is also an ideal starting point for a day trip to Pisa, which is only 20 minutes away by train.
5. Food in Rome
What to Eat in Rome: Carciofi alla giudia, Jewish salt cod, Pizza Romana, Saltimbocca, Cacio e Pepe; Trapizzino
Where to Eat in Rome: Testaccio, Trastevere and the Ghetto.
What to See in Rome: The Colosseum, Roman Forum, The Pantheon, St Peter’s and the Vatican Museums and much more
How Many Days in Rome: 4 days
Roman food is an extremely broad church, just like St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Its influences go back thousands of years, and are borrowed from various cultures of people who have made the city their home. I didn’t think so first time around, but on my second visit I came to see that Rome really is among the best food cities in Italy.
I found that the further I went off the beaten path in Rome, it was easier to find traditional (and new) Roman dishes. One of my most enjoyable discoveries was the survival of traditional Jewish dishes in modern cucina romana . My favourite Roman dish is probably carciofi alla giudia , Jewish-style whole artichokes deep-fried, then served alone, with bread and lemon or (my recommendation) pecorino cheese and saffron. The season for this is February to April if you want your artichoke to be of local origin.
I also found baccalà , salt cod, served in several places in the Ghetto. It’s usually deep fried, and you can have it by itself, with vegetables or even chips. Cod and chips in Rome: who would have thought it?
Pasta and pizza are also prominent on the Roman menu. Pizza Romana has a thin, crispy base, distinctly different from its Neapolitan cousin. Cacio e pepe is a Roman pasta dish with a creamy sauce made from pecorino, black pepper and pasta water. Amatriciana is another popular pasta sauce, made from pecorino, tomatoes and pig’s cheek (and sometimes pancetta). The trapizzino is a recent Roman innovation, a pizza folded and filled with popular Roman dishes from broccoli e salsiccia (broccoli and sausage) to tripe to chicken with peppers.
We can’t leave the Eternal City without mentioning saltimbocca . Its name translates as ‘leap in the mouth’ and it certainly does that. According to Roman tradition, the main ingredient is veal, though I’ve also seen chicken saltimbocca at some restaurants in Rome. The veal is wrapped in prosciutto (Parma ham) and sage leaves, then cooked in a white wine (or occasionally Marsala) sauce.
6. Food in Naples
What to Eat in Naples: Pizza (marinara or Margherita), Seafood, Buffalo mozzarella; Sfogliatelle
Where to Eat in Naples: Da Michele or Trianon da Ciro
What to See in Naples: Museo Arqueologico Nazionale, Museo Cappella San Severo; the churches of the Spaccanapoli area; Mergellina for the best city views with Vesuvius
How Many Days in Naples: Three days would be a good introduction to the city. If you’re staying for a week or more, you’ll have plenty of time for day trips from Naples, including Pompeii .
Naples is a fascinating city, with a wealth of layers of life and history to explore. You need a few days there to try some of the best Neapolitan dishes, mixed with discovering some of its incredible art treasures. Venture underground into the Catacombs, or discover the cult of the city’s patron saint, San Gennaro . You can visit the Museo Arqueologico Nazionale – one of the best museums in Italy, I’d venture – for a few hours, then sit down at one of the oldest pizzerie on the planet, delighting in an original Naples pizza.
Naples is the home of pizza. The idea of bread (usually focaccia) with a topping goes back to ancient times. But the refinement of the idea to the pizza in Naples that you see today dates back to the late 19 th century. Tomato was already a staple topping by this time, but pizzaiuolo Raffaele Esposito made a ‘pizza Margherita’ in tribute to the Queen Consort, Margherita of Savoy. This was topped with tomato, mozzarella cheese and basil leaves – roughly corresponding to the colours of Italy’s red, white and green national flag.
The Antica Pizzeria Da Michele is one of the oldest in the city, and serves some of the best pizza in Naples. They only serve two varieties – the Margherita and its predecessor, the marinara . Both are mouth-wateringly delicious. The marinara is topped with garlic, oregano, olive oil and tomato. The beauty is in the simplicity. The end result is a dough that’s softer than pizza Romana, and melts in the mouth.
The mozzarella di bufala is a product from the surrounding Campania region. As you travel beyond Salerno towards the great ruins of Paestum, you see many roadside signs offering it for sale fresh from the farm. The limoncello liqueur also originates from the Sorrento area, close to the Amalfi Coast.
Naples street food is another joy to discover. You can get a cuoppo of fried just-about-anything. This can be fish, vegetables, deep fried pasta balls, rice balls, seafood, you name it. Ask for a cuoppo di mare and you get fried seafood. A cuoppo di terra is a selection of fried food ‘from the land’.
No trip to Naples is complete without sampling a sfogliatella. The riccia version of this delicious dessert has many delicate frills of pastry, with ricotta cinnamon and candied peel hidden within.
7. Food in Sicily
What to Eat in Sicily : Spaghetti alla Norma; Caponata; Arancini; Pesto alla Trapanese; pistachio pizza
Where To Eat In Sicily :
What to See in Sicily : Ortigia and ancient Syracuse; Mount Etna; Palermo and Monreale; Cefalu; several great ancient Greek sites including Agrigento, Selinunte and Segesta
How Many Days in Sicily : anything from three days for a short city break in Sicily to three weeks
For me, Sicilian food has always been among the most exotic and exciting in Italy and indeed the Mediterranean. The island has been occupied many times over, with influences as diverse as Carthaginian (modern day Tunisian), Greek, Italian, Norman and Arab all present in what you can eat there today.
The produce you get in these hotter climes is incredible. Sicilian olives are delicious, lemons and tangy blood oranges grow on trees. One of the most prevalent vegetables is the aubergine, or eggplant, and this features in the best known Sicilian pasta dish, pasta alla Norma. It’s also the main ingredient in caponata . These dishes originate from the east of the island, in the shadow of Mount Etna.
Etna dominates much of the Sicilian landscape, and its eruptions have greatly influenced what can be grown in the area. The slopes of the great volcano are home to some of the best Sicilian wines, but the soil is not as good for cultivating vegetables. Yet Etna played a very important role in the development of arguably the best dessert in Italy – gelato. The word translates as ‘frozen’, and the concept comes from the Arabs, who would bring ice down from the mountain and flavour it with ingredients like honey. Granita has the same origins; the ice is crushed then flavoured. Granita stalls are everywhere in the main Sicilian towns and cities.
Sicilian recipes to the west of the island are different to those in the east, simply because of the availability of different ingredients. ‘Red pesto’ is of Sicilian origin, known there as pesto alla Trapanese , after the western town of Trapani. Pasta con le sarde is pasta with sardines, served with fennel, pine kernels and sultanas. The far west of Sicily is also where Marsala wine, an exquisite dessert wine, is from.

Emilia-Romagna
Emilia-Romagna, often hailed as the heartland of Italian gastronomy, is a region where culinary tradition and innovation converge to create an unparalleled epicurean paradise. Nestled in northern Italy, stretching from the rugged Apennine Mountains to the serene waters of the Po River, Emilia-Romagna is a treasure trove of culinary delights, making it a must-visit destination for any food enthusiast.
The region’s gastronomic richness is rooted in its diverse landscapes, from fertile plains to lush mountains, each contributing unique ingredients to its food tapestry. Emilia-Romagna is renowned for its exquisite array of local products and dishes, many of which have attained global acclaim. Parmigiano-Reggiano, the king of cheeses, hails from this region, its nutty and savory flavors a testament to the art of cheese-making perfected over centuries. Similarly, Prosciutto di Parma, a delicately cured ham, embodies the region’s mastery in charcuterie.
Bologna, the vibrant capital of the region, is affectionately known as “La Grassa” (The Fat One) for its rich cuisine. Here, the legendary Bolognese sauce, a meat-based pasta sauce, was born. It is best savored with the region’s fresh, handmade tagliatelle or in the classic lasagna al forno, layered with béchamel and Parmigiano-Reggiano.
Modena, another culinary gem, is the birthplace of traditional balsamic vinegar, an elixir aged for years, sometimes decades, acquiring a complex sweetness and depth that enhances any dish it graces. The region is also home to the succulent Mortadella, a finely ground pork sausage scented with spices.
The cuisine of Emilia-Romagna is a celebration of simplicity and flavor, where the quality of ingredients speaks for itself. From the hearty piadina flatbreads to the sumptuous tortellini, each dish tells a story of the land and the people who have cultivated its culinary heritage.
Explore a culinary trip to Italy and visit Emilia-Romagna, it’s not just a destination; it’s an experience, a journey through the flavors and traditions that form the soul of Italian cuisine.
Tuscany’s food? It’s like getting a big, comforting hug from your Italian grandma. The magic lies in whipping up something utterly delicious from the simplest things. Take Ribollita – it’s this amazing soup that takes stale bread, beans, and a bunch of veggies, and turns them into a bowl of heartwarming goodness. And let’s talk about the Bistecca alla Fiorentina. If you’re a steak fan, you’re in for a real treat. This isn’t just any steak; it’s a giant, perfectly grilled T-bone that’s all about the flavor and the perfect sear. And the olive oil here is something else – a little splash of this peppery gold, and even the plainest bread tastes like heaven. Eating in Tuscany is more than just good food; it’s those long, relaxed meals where you chat, laugh, and just enjoy the moment – it’s what makes you fall in love with this place.
Sicily’s food is like a big, vibrant party on a plate. It’s all about bold flavors and hearty laughs around the table. Picture waking up to a sweet, icy granita and a fluffy brioche – it’s like a morning high-five from the island itself. The seafood here? It’s a big deal. Take pasta con le sarde – it’s a dish where fresh sardines and wild fennel come together like old friends. And you’ve got to try arancini – these little fried rice balls stuffed with cheese and ragù are basically bites of happiness. Then there’s caponata – this sweet and sour eggplant dish is like a zesty little party in your mouth. And desserts here are a whole other level of awesome, especially cannoli. Crunchy on the outside, creamy on the inside, they’re basically happiness rolled into a pastry. Eating in Sicily is more than just great food; it’s like joining a big, loud, loving family feast.
Rome is like the Italian food tour that you envision in your dreams, but here at Italy4Real we can make it reality. When in Rome, you’re in for a real treat with the food. Carbonara? It’s the bomb – creamy, cheesy, with a nice kick of pepper and some amazing pancetta. Then there’s Cacio e Pepe – it’s just pasta, cheese, and pepper, but oh man, it’s good. And Amatriciana? It’s pasta in a kicky tomato sauce with guanciale, which is basically the best kind of bacon. For a quick bite, you’ve gotta try Supplì. These are like little fried balls of heaven, stuffed with tomato sauce and melty mozzarella. And don’t even get me started on Pizza al Taglio. It’s this awesome, thick, slice-as-you-like pizza with all kinds of toppings. Eating in Rome is like a non-stop flavor party – simple stuff, but so, so tasty.
In Venice, the seafood is just out of this world. Walking around, you’re gonna bump into some amazing fishy dishes. Definitely give Sarde in Saor a try – it’s this funky sardine dish with a sweet and tangy twist, plus onions, pine nuts, and raisins. Really hits the spot with its unique Venetian flavor. And oh man, you can’t skip spaghetti al nero di seppia – it’s spaghetti in this awesome squid ink sauce that’s full of flavor and looks pretty cool too. For a quick bite, fritto misto is where it’s at. It’s like a mixed seafood fry-up, all crunchy and delicious, perfect for snacking on the go. Seafood in Venice isn’t just eating; it’s like diving into the city’s culture. Each dish has its own flair and the flavors are as lively and fun as Venice itself. Explore food travel in Italy with our Venice food tours .
Amalfi Coast
If you’re heading to the Amalfi Coast, do yourself a favor and try the limoncello and Buffalo mozzarella – they’re absolute musts. The limoncello is this zingy, sweet lemon liqueur that’s like a mini vacation in a glass, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. And the Buffalo mozzarella? It’s insanely good. This cheese is all about the creaminess, coming right from the local Mediterranean buffaloes. Just grab a chunk, maybe pair it with some fresh tomatoes and olive oil, and you’re in for a real treat. Seriously, these are the flavors that make the Amalfi Coast an experience unforgettable.

However, if you receive great service, you will notice that many people will round the bill up or leave a couple of euros on the table. It’s the polite thing to do, and we always do it.
Contrary to the United States where 15-20% gratuity is often expected since waitstaff are constantly waiting on you, Italians don’t typically leave a tip since their job is complete once they’ve delivered your beverage and meal.
It’s normal to have to wave down someone to pay your bill, so keep this in mind when dining in Rome.
What Should I Bring on a Roman Food Tour?
When attending a food tour, it’s a good idea to come prepared with the following items:
- Comfortable shoes: You’ll be walking a lot and Rome’s streets are less-than-ideal for heels, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
- Sun protection: Rome can get very hot and is often sunny in the summer months, so bring along sunscreen and a hat or sunglasses.
- Water bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial when exploring a new city, and many food tours will offer water, but it’s always best to bring your own refillable bottle (this LifeStraw Bottle is my favorite and always comes with me!)
- Cash for tipping: It’s not required to tip on food tours in Rome, but if your guide provides you with a great time then having some cash on hand to show your appreciation can be a kind gesture.
- An empty stomach: Make sure not to eat too much before the tour since you’ll want to leave room to try all the delicious dishes!
Do Rome Food Tours Include Wine Tastings?
Many food tours in Rome, Italy understand the importance of how a fine wine complements the culinary experience of Italian cuisine, and thus quite a few include tastings of select local wines.
However, not all tours include a wine tour as well, so if this is something you’re interested in then be sure to check out The Roman Food Tour in Trastevere with Free-Flowing Fine Wine !
How Long Are Food Tours in Rome Italy?
Most food tours in Rome last between 3-4 hours, depending on the tour you choose . Some may be longer or shorter, but this is generally enough time to experience a variety of dishes and explore different neighborhoods in the city.
Be prepared for plenty of walking and stopping at multiple restaurants, markets, and shops along the way! Overall, it’s a fun and delicious way to spend an afternoon or evening.
How Much Do Rome Food Tours Cost?
On average, Roman food tours can range from $50-$140 per person , although this varies depending on the type of tour, the number of tastings included, and any additional experiences or extras offered.
While it may seem expensive at first glance, keep in mind that a food tour typically includes multiple meals spread out over a few hours, so it’s actually a great value since you’ll get to taste between 5 to 10 different dishes that would otherwise cost between 15-30 euros each!

While just about any month is great to visit Italy, there are a few prime times of the year for the Italy’s Treasures tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.
Throughout Italy, the most popular times to visit are April, May, June, September, and October. Along the coast, July and August are busy with locals and Europeans on summer holiday, while cities are usually less crowded.
Spring: In March, enjoy the calm before the summer season, especially Cinque Terre, which becomes quite crowded from April through October. While some seasonal attractions might not be open in early spring, countless opportunities to soak in the area’s beauty remain.
Fall: November is a fantastic time to visit Italy. The popular Cinque Terre becomes less crowded and even more enjoyable to explore.

Food Tour in Florence or Rome: Which is Better?
O ne of the first things most people think about when considering a trip to Italy is the food they’ll indulge in. Pasta, pizza, and prosciutto could be its own holy trinity of “P” foods that people look forward to in this well-visited European country. But should you take a food tour in Rome or Florence?
What are the nuisances of cuisine in each city and region? Do you need to choose between the two options, or simply take a food tour in one city or the other to understand Italy and its “Italian” food?
We share details of our experience in both cities, including if you need to do a tour in both locations or just one and what you will taste during each food tour. We’re also sharing our preferred tour operator (spoil alert: it’s Devour Tours ) and a review of the Rome food tour and Florence food tour.

Food tour in rome or florence: the verdict.
We signed up for a food tour in both cities during a trip to Italy, where we traveled from Rome to Florence, then ended our week-long trip in Milan before heading to Madrid, Spain.
We like to understand the food culture as early as possible during our vacation so we know what to order for the rest of the trip (and where to order it because food tour guides always recommend great food spots).
As such, we took a food tour in Rome on our second night there, which was the earliest available time to book during our trip. When we arrived in Florence a couple of days later, we immediately took a Florence food tour on our first night there.
Our verdict is that doing a tour in both cities was the right decision. We were so glad we did a food tour in Rome and a food tour in Florence because we learned wildly different information and experienced how different the food is in both cities through the tours, even though they are not geographically far from each other.
Also, it’s important to know that pizza, which originated in Naples, isn’t a focus of either food tour. So don’t expect to have an array of pizza varieties whatsoever during a Florence or Rome food tour! The tours dig deeper into Rome and Florence’s food culture and food experiences.
We also want to note that no matter the city we visit, if there is a Devour food tour option, we book it. It is our preferred food tour operator because they’re always amazing, including stellar guides, information, and locations. They’re reliable as the “best of the best,” and they support local businesses, which is a cause we can get behind.
Food Tour in Rome vs. Florence: Foods You Will Try
Both tours left us feeling very full! We had plenty to eat and drink on both the Rome Food Tour and the Florence food tour.
An overview of what to expect during a food tour in Rome includes:
- Local red and white wine, Prosecco, and a cocktail Spritz
- Cheeses and meats
- A special Rome street food item called Suppli
During our Rome food tour, two guests included a vegetarian and a non-alcohol drinker. The vegetarian guest was easily accommodated with a veggie option instead of meat. The man who didn’t drink alcohol was always offered an alternative, like a Coke or Fanta, wherever we went when we had wine or a cocktail instead.
Our Florence food tour included:
- Wine (including local red wine and dessert wine)
- Bruschettas, including one with a tomato spread and one with a truffle spread
- Various meats
- Florentine steak and potatoes
- Gelato
While some of the foods seem to overlap at a glance, we learned that the regional flavors and selections of the particular wines and cheeses, for example, were different from one tour to another.
As another example, we had meat during both tours. But we only learned about salami made with peppercorns versus salami made with fennel on our Florence tour. Our guide shared the historical importance of the spices for each meat.
Of course, the city and locations were different for our Rome food tour vs. the Florence food tour. In each city, our food guide shared information about the city, overall, and the neighborhood we were in. Naturally, we learned different information about the area in Rome versus Florence.
Devour Food Tours in Italy
As we previously mentioned, Devour is our preferred tour operator for food tours. We are so lucky they have tours in Italy in various cities. They also host tours in places like Paris, France , the United States (including California, Massachusetts, and NYC), and all over Spain .
They believe in supporting locally owned businesses during their food tours, keeping the group size small and intimate.
While the tours can accommodate a variety of allergies and dietary preferences (including for vegetarians), we do not recommend either Italy food tour for vegans. Italy, as a country, has a long way to go for veganism.
Rome Food Tour Review with Devour
We met our guide in the Treverstere neighborhood of Rome. It’s on the side of the Tiber River opposite the Colosseum and Vatican City, where we did the wonderful “ Pristine Sistine ” Walks tour earlier in the day. Walking there or taking a bus to that side of town is very easy if you’re not at a hotel in the neighborhood.
Locals flock to Treverstere to find great food. It is well known for its enotecas (wine bars), cocktail bars, and restaurants.
Our group was small, with just five people. The passion that our guide, Manuela, had for Rome and tourism shined through. She had been a flight attendant for years before pursuing a career as a tour guide in her home city, which she has been doing for about eight years.
Though it was raining, the tour was joyful and upbeat as we bounced around five or so destinations.
Rome Food Tour Food and Drink Locations
Out of respect for the tour, we will not spill the beans on the exact locations we visited. However, we will say that it was very clear that the businesses were all owned by locals who were making an honest living with their quality food and warm hospitality.
A favorite stop was a bar that has been owned by the same man since the 1960s. Marcello was at the register when we stopped by, sitting beneath an old menu sign above him.
The prices were still marked in Italian lira from before Italy joined the European Union. This stop was also a great time to try Campari or Aperol spritzes, an incredibly popular drink amongst Europeans.
Food-wise, it was so interesting to get some “suppli” at one of the most popular places in Rome. We learned that it’s a grab-and-go kind of food similar to arancini in Sicily, but with distinct Roman differences.
During our Devour food tour, eating it on the go was fun, as the Romans do. Dan and I would never have known about this food without the tour, including its history or where to order it.
We happily ate our share as we walked to the next food tour location, an enoteca where we learned about white and red wines and had delicious apertivos.
Book the Same Food Tour in Rome
We loved another food stop where we sat down to try three kinds of pasta local to Rome. They were all amazing! It was fun to sit at a family-owned restaurant and eat the dishes, which were served family-style.
Though we ate one of the two kinds of pasta in Rome the day before, we didn’t understand how it was made until our Rome food tour.
Manuela shared the simple “ingredient rules” that Romans follow when creating pasta dishes at home. She also shared a bit about proteins in the country and what locals consider food for at home and food to order at restaurants.
She explained some of the cultural aspects of eating meals out, including the times Roman Italians dine. It was all very educational.
We discovered that the same restaurant offers Devour cooking classes when a colleague of Manuela’s stopped by to say a quick hello as she walked through the restaurant to the kitchen. She was wearing her Devour cooking apron and was incredibly friendly and smiley!
Florence Food Tour Review with Devour
Our food tour was on the same side of the Arno River where we were staying. It was a 15-minute walk from our Airbnb to our food tour meeting point, on the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens side of town.
It’s a short walk across the river over the Ponte Vecchio to get to the meeting point if you’re staying near the Duomo or Palazzo Vecchio/Piazza della Signoria area.
That is also the side of Florence where the Accademia Gallery (where the David sculpture is) and the Uffizi Gallery are located. (We explored that area the day after our food tour during the fantastic “ Florence in a Day with David, Duomo, Uffizi & Walking Tour .”)
We met in front of the state of Cosimo Ridolfi in Piazza Santo Spirito, as our email confirmation instructed. Our guide, Antonio, was awaiting our arrival. Our group of ten people was eager to explore the Oltrarno area and try new foods.
Antonio shared a bit about the area we were standing in and Italy’s history before we started walking to our first food destination. He shared things about Italy’s formation as a nation and the Italian language we had never thought of before. It all tied into the Florence food tour we were about to take.
Florence Food Tour Food and Drink Locations
Again, we won’t get into the specifics of where we stopped out of respect for the tour and you, so you’ll have great surprises when you sign up for it.
But a favorite stop was a small apertivo bar, where Antonio remembers shopping for herbs with his parents as a child. The building has been in the owner’s family for multiple generations and had a former life as an herbal shop years ago.
Another hit of the tour was a famous “wine window” of Florence. It was even an item for one of the women on our tour to check off her Italy bucket list.
Because we were with a tour that had a reservation at the popular wine window, we were able to bypass the long line of people waiting for their turn. Such a perk to be on a well-organized food tour!
Book the Same Food Tour in Florence
These wine windows were recently resurrected and regained popularity during the pandemic. Antonio shared the history of the wine windows in Florence, which was not at all the reason we suspected they were invented!
We also loved stopping at a BBQ place. But it’s not at all like American BBQ. It’s just a place where they grill items inside on a special grill. Famously, the restaurant serves “Florentine Steak.” Trying this famous Florentine dish with other excited tourists anxious to dig in was thrilling.
Tasting the steak is part of what made it one of the top things to do in Florence .
Our dessert stop was for gelato on this tour, like it was during our food tour in Rome. But truthfully, you cannot escape gelato in Italy. It’s EVERYWHERE . And it was great to try different flavors in Florence and learn about one, in particular, that was a local favorite.
Rome and Florence Food Tours Conclusion
We recommend both food tours in both cities. We truly learned and ate different things on each tour. The breadth of knowledge we gained about Italy’s local cuisine, culture, and history through exploring Florence and Rome with experienced local guides was invaluable.
We advise signing up for both tours in advance (they often sell out weeks ahead of time, especially during peak travel seasons) and booking for a date as close to when you arrive in the city as possible.
That way, you will be able to eat subsequent meals with more knowledge of how the locals eat and order, and you can benefit from the restaurant recommendations from the Devour food tour guides.
