Day 2 in Kauai

As the beach at Polihale State Park is wild, there are no lifeguards or protection from the open ocean, so taking precautions is advised. Many do not recommend swimming or surfing here as there is a rapid drop off into deep water, and the rip currents are infamously strong. 

Instead, for water-based activities, it is recommended to head over to the Queen’s Pond at Polihale State Park. It can be found on the southern point of the park and is one of the safer areas to swim in.

A quick but worthwhile stop, the Kekaha Lookout is found in Pu’u ka Pele Forest Reserve . The roadside vista opens up to views of the Hawaiian Island of Ni’hau, the ocean, and the Waimea Canyon. 

To reach the Kekaha Lookout, no trekking is required. Step out of your car, take a few steps, and you’re there! From the Kekaha Lookout, awe-inspiring sights of Kauai open up before you, making for a spectacular sightseeing and photo-taking spot to remember your trip by.

On the south shore is the famous Shipwreck Beach , where abandoned ships once littered its shores. One such ship was the World War II Liberty Ship, a 1940s oil tanker that beached on the coral reef of Kaiolohia Bay. It became a famous landmark until it was later removed. 

This beach itself is not a recommended area for swimming or snorkeling. This is due to the intense rip currents and waves that power through the waters here, which can be a perilous safety risk.

Even with this, experienced surfers like to test their luck at Shipwreck Beach, though we highly advise not following suit.

Enjoy some beach time here are try some water sports! A sturdy break wall protects a portion of Kalapaki Beach, fending off the most violent waves that travel from the open ocean.

Due to this feature, water activities such as swimming, paddle boarding, and boogie boarding are popular at Kalapaki Beach, along with surfing lessons for beginners. 

Nearby are rental accommodations for water-based activities, plus shave ice to cool off from a hot day spent in the sun! Shave ice is a classic Kauai treat, so definitely grab one when you’ve finished up your beach time!

Featured on the hit television series Fantasy Island , the 173-foot Wailua Falls are found on the Wailua River. These dramatic falls are stunning as they cascade into the waters below. 

The Wailua Falls can be seen from the roadside if you’re content with sightseeing. If you’re more inclined to get up close and personal, a three-mile hike is required from Ma’alo Road.

One of the most rewarding sights can be gifted if you time it right in the morning when occasionally a rainbow trickles across the rushing waterfalls through the mist!

Full of culture and history, Lu’au Kalamaku is a dinner theater located on a plantation that combines native cuisine, hula dancing performances, and local crafts for a one-of-a-kind experience!

The Lay of the Land: Parts of Kauai

Before we get into the itinerary, it’s important to know the lay of the land. There are four main regions of Kauai: North Shore, South Shore, East Side (Coconut Coast), and West Side. The main towns include:

• North Shore: Hanalei, Princeville, and Kilauea
• South Shore: Poipu and Koloa
• East Side: Lihue and Kapa’a
• West Side: Waimea and Hanapepe

The airport is located in Lihue, on the east side. From the centrally located airport, in no traffic you’re approximately the following travel times to these popular Kauai locations:

• 1-hour to Hanalei (or 45-minutes to Princeville)
• 25-minutes to Poipu
• 1-hour to Waimea Canyon

3-Day Kauai Itinerary

Here’s an itinerary for an action-packed three days of sightseeing on Kauai. Of course, if you want to enjoy some of the Kauai beaches and slow down a little, this itinerary would also be a perfect five-day to one-week itinerary. Just use these three days as your action days and use the remaining days to enjoy the best beaches.

Before you head out and explore the north shore of Kauai, check the weather. While the north shore has stunning, lush scenery, it does get more rain than any other part of the island. Plan to head up on a day that isn’t too rainy (though you can expect a quick shower here or there most days).

If you’re staying in Poipu on the south shore, plan to get up and hit the road early. It’s a long drive up to Hanalei (approximately 1.5 hours), but it’s scenic and so worth it. 

Your first stop is at the Hanalei Valley Lookout . A quick stop off the side of the road to get a picturesque view of the valley below. Continue your drive and after a couple of one-lane bridges (yield to oncoming traffic), you’ll enter the charming town of Hanalei. You’ll be back to explore this afternoon, but if you’re hungry make a quick stop at Hanalei Bread Company for coffee and breakfast. 

If the weather is nice and you’re visiting in the summer, you’ll head to Tunnels Beach . This is the place to snorkel on Kauai but it’s popular. You may have to park at Haena Beach and walk to Tunnels. This massive snorkeling area isn’t just great when you’re in the water. The beach is also sprawling with soft white sand. It’s a great place to relax for a few hours. 

If the waves are too big to safely spend time at the beach, there are still plenty of other things to do. Visit the Limahuli Tropical Botanical Garden and stroll through their beautifully landscaped botanical gardens and ancient Hawaiian taro ponds.

Two other quick stops you can make on the north shore are at the Maniniholo Dry Cave and take a dip in a roadside stream. Watch our video on the north shore for details on where to find these. 

Once you’ve enjoyed this part of the north shore, it’s time to head back to Hanalei town for lunch. In town, you have so many fantastic options for food. One of our favorites: Fredrico’s Fresh Mex Cuisine for fish tacos. 

After lunch, take some time to walkthrough Hanalei town, visiting the shops and the Hanalei Pier. If you’re visiting in the summer and want to try your hand at stand up paddle, this is the place to do that. There are plenty of rental shops and in the summer, Hanalei Bay is calm and offers the perfect spot for beginners to get in the water. 

If you’re really eager to hit up one more beach before dinner, head to Hideaways beach in Princeville. Note: if you’re traveling with young children, getting to this beach can be tricky. It’s down a steep bluff and you work your way down the steep hills using ropes. But once you get down, it is worth it. This was hands down our favorite beach that we found on Kauai. 

Now that it’s getting into the evening, head to AMA , an outdoor restaurant with an unbeatable view and fantastic food.

Day 2: See the Stunning Vistas of Waimea Canyon and the Napali Coast

Today you’re heading to the west side of the island to view the spectacular nature that Kauai offers. You have two choices here: Waimea Canyon in the morning and a sunset Napali Coast boat ride, or Napali Coast snorkeling in the morning and Waimea Canyon in the afternoon. 

We’re planning the day with Waimea Canyon first, but just reverse the activities if you prefer.

Your first stop today is for some coffee at the Kauai Coffee Company . Here you can do a self-guided tour of the plantation, sample coffee, or buy your own cup (or bag). It’s a fun, quick stop to start your day of adventure. 

Next, you’ll head to Hanapepe , Kauai’s Biggest Little Town. This charming small town is full of art shops, coffee shops and bakeries, and their famous swinging bridge. If you skipped breakfast this morning, you can pick something up at Midnight Bear Breads .

From here you’ll make the drive up to Waimea Canyon . This stunning canyon is called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. The canyon is approximately ten miles long and 3,000 feet deep. Here, there are plenty of scenic overlooks so you can get a great view of the canyon. There are also plenty of hiking options, ranging from very short and easy to hikes that take the better part of the day. 

If you’re up for more scenic views, you can continue driving to the Kalalau Lookout, which has stunning ocean views, on a clear day. 

Depending on how much time you spend in Waimea canyon, you might have some extra time before your Na Pali Coast sunset sail departs. If you do, head to Waimea Plantation Cottages and grab a snack from Chicken in a Barrel. The cottages are set on a 43-acre ocean-front property that is beautifully landscaped. Grab a drink and sip it while sitting on a rocking chair on the hotel’s back porch. 

Finally, it’s time to head on your Na Pali Coast sail. This is an iconic mountain shoreline that you won’t be able to explore by car. The only way to see it is by boat, by helicopter, or on foot by hiking in. This rugged terrain might be the most spectacular view on the entire island (possibly on any of the islands). 

Finally, a day filled with beautiful waterfalls!

Start your morning off with a hearty breakfast at Little Fish Coffee in Poipu . This is one of our favorite coffee shops on the island. Grab a coffee, acai bowl, smoothie, or breakfast bagel and relax at one of the picnic tables in the garden. 

Once you are ready to start the day, you’re off on a drive! Head out on the 30-minute drive to ‘Opaeka’a Falls . Here, you can stop off at the lookout point and get a view of the waterfalls, without any hike needed. Get your pictures and hop back in the car. We’re going to head out on a hike for some up close and personal waterfall viewing.

From here you’ll drive to Ho’opi’i Falls. Take note when parking and starting the hike: the hike begins in a residential area. Stay quiet to respect the neighbors here. If there are no street parking spots, head to Wailua Falls as an alternative. You can also kayak the Wailua River, either with a guided tour or on your own. 

On this hike, you’ll be able to visit not one, but three waterfalls. The second fall features a swimming pond with a rope swing. The hike itself isn’t too strenuous (we did it with a two-year-old), but the trail can get muddy at parts. 

After seeing your fill of waterfalls, it’s time to get back in the car and head back south. Head through the Tree Tunnel , a stretch of the road lined with 500 eucalyptus trees over 100 years old. Stop off in the charming and historic Koloa Town. Stroll the streets, visit the boutiques, and pick up lunch. We love the Koloa Fish Market , but there are plenty of other food truck and restaurant options in town.

Close out the day by spending the afternoon on Poipu beach . This beach was once named America’s best beach by the Travel Channel and it’s easy to see why. We have it listed in our favorite kid-friendly beaches on Kauai and the best beaches on Kauai for swimming .

Two calm, golden sand crescents come together to form a beach that is shielded from rough seas. It’s kid-friendly and an easy place to swim and relax. Bonus if you’re coming with small kids: there’s a playground on the beach that our son Henry played on for hours. 

Your day is winding down. If you’re ready for one last adventure, head to Shipwreck beach to do walk the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail , a coastal hiking trail that delivers stunning views and is relatively easy to do (though I recommend wearing real shoes!). 

Are 3 Days Enough in Kauai?

You might be wondering if we think that three days is enough for a Kauai vacation. I mean, I did just write an entire article on the perfect three-day itinerary. 

No, three days isn’t enough in Kauai.

Honestly, we just returned from a week on Kauai and that felt a few days too short. If you want to fully explore the island and have some days to relax on the beach, ten days would be the perfect stay length. 

So why did we create a three-day itinerary? A couple of reasons:

• According to Hawaii Tourism Authority data, nearly two-thirds of the people who visit Kauai also visit another island . And the average length of stay for a trip to Hawaii is nine days, so a three or four day trip to Kauai is common.
• We created a three day Kauai itinerary based on exploration. If you include beach and pool days, this could easily be a six or seven-day itinerary, with a nice vacation pace. 

If you can only stay for three days, this is the itinerary to help you see it all. But I hope you can take a longer trip. Kauai is worth it. 

When Should You Visit Kauai?

Just like the other Hawaiian island, Kauai has months that are cooler and rainier and months that are warmer and drier. That said, Kauai does get more rain than the other islands, giving it its lush garden landscape. Therefore, April to October is the drier period on the island. 5 Days in Kauai: The Perfect Itinerary (Based in Poipu)

This post may contain some affiliate links, which means I’ll make a little money on anything you choose to purchase. But of course, I only recommend my absolute favorites to you. Thank you for supporting the brands that make HulaLand possible.

If you’re going to Kauai and you’ve already got your airfare, accommodations, and rental car booked but you’re trying to decide how to spend your days…this post is for you!

Specifically…I’ve put together a 5 day itinerary for Kauai that covers all of the must sees plus some of my favorites. 

The details…this is five full days not including travel days (so perfect for a six night trip) and I’ve laid it out to work best if you’re staying in Poipu (on the south side of the island) so if you’re staying on the north shore or the east side then you may want to allocate your time differently.

5 Days on Kauai

Most flights to Kauai arrive by mid afternoon and it’s not a super quick flight so I usually like to spend the first day just getting acclimated (getting a rental car, checking into your hotel, finding some groceries, etc can take some time), just hanging out at the resort pool and beach, and having a sunset dinner before early to bed because of the time change. 

Day 1: Hang around Poipu

For your first day of vacation, you probably don’t want to plan a whole lot, but getting out and seeing the area where you’re staying can help you settle in a little quicker. 

Since you’ll probably be up early with the time change, I would head to Little Fish Coffee right before they open. This local coffee/breakfast spot is THE place to go in Poipu, but it gets crazy long lines. Their coffee specialty drinks are amazing and they do breakfast sandwiches, acai bowls, etc. If you’re not one of the first few people in line, just be prepared to settle in and wait awhile. It is not a quick place and in person orders get preference over online orders (the arrival times for online orders often get pushed back quite a bit from what they tell you when you order). Just remember…you’re on island time. 

Read my full post about things to do in Poipu and see what strikes your fancy, but here are some things I recommend for the day: 

Spouting Horn Blowhole . This blowhole is probably the most easily accessed one in Hawaii. No hike required…just drive up, park, and walk over to the railing. 

The blowhole here is very clearly fenced off, but in case you get any crazy ideas…you should never get anywhere near a blowhole. Many deaths have occured near blowholes in Hawaii. It’s possible to get sucked in as well as swept into the ocean by the large waves. Keep a distance!

Po’ipu Beach . This is one of the most popular beaches on Kauai and it has great amenities (showers, restrooms, lifeguards, picnic tables, etc.). It’s almost always warm and sunny, there’s good snorkeling, and it’s not uncommon to see Hawaiian Monk Seals or turtles sunning themselves on the sand. If you don’t already have beach gear, you can rent chairs, umbrellas, and snorkels at a shop across the street. If you’re staying at a resort or condo with a good beach/pool situation, obviously you should spend your time there. 

Historic Koloa Town .  You can easily spend an hour or two walking around the town (there’s a historical center) and of course shaved ice, ice cream, and a coffee shop. You likely drove through it when you came to Poipu from the airport, but don’t miss the famous tree tunnel near Koloa! 

Koloa Mill Coffee & Ice Cream has good breakfast sandwiches, coffee, and bakery items if you’re in the area for breakfast. If you’re around for lunch, don’t miss the Koloa Fish Market. 

Hike the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail . This is a really beautiful hike along the coast in Poipu and what’s great about it is you can park different places depending on how active you want to be. Park at Shipwreck Beach (public lot just east of the Grand Hyatt) to do the full hike to Maha’ulepu Beach (and beyond) or you can drive much closer to the beach and hike down to see the Makauwahi Cave. Sunset Dinner at the Beach House . Start your trip off with a bang with dinner at one of the island’s best sunset spots. Be sure to make reservations well in advance if you want a table around sunset (look up the time and make reservations an hour or so before). 

Food recommendations at the Beach House: lobster deviled eggs, pork pot stickers, macnut crusted mahi mahi, coconut creme brulee and you absolutely 100% must get the Monkeypod mai tai. Read more about the best restaurants in Poipu (plus a full review of the Beach House here ).

If you want a casual lunch in Poipu, try Koloa Fish Market, Bubba Burgers, Da Crack or Savage Shrimp.

Day 2: See the Napali Coast on a Catamaran Cruise

Seeing the Napali Coast is probably the #1 highlight of any trip to Kauai. It’s a MUST DO and you’re absolutely not allowed to skip it ; ) Now…my favorite way to see the Napali Coast is actually from a smaller boat that leaves from Hanalei on the north shore , but they only run these tours in the summer and it’s a long drive up to Hanalei for a 7AM departure if you’re staying in Poipu. 

But we’ve got options people! The big catamaran tours (which are the most popular) leave from Port Allen on the south side just about 20 minutes from Poipu. Captain Andy’s is the biggest and most popular outfit, but there’s several companies that basically all offer the same tour including Blue Dolphin which is locally owned.

Your excursion leaves by 8AM (they want you to check in by 7:30AM) so plan to do something quick and easy for coffee/quick breakfast before you head that way. They serve a light breakfast and a really good lunch (plus drinks) on the boat so you’ll be taken care of. 

Take everything you’ll want for 5+ hours of fun in the sun (bathing suit, towels, sunscreen, waterproof phone case, etc.) and be prepared for the most amazing scenery you’ve ever seen. 

The cruise wraps by 1:30PM and I’ve got the perfect mid afternoon stop for you on the way back to the resort or condo. 

One of my favorite places is Warehouse 3540 and it’s in Lawai on the way back to Poipu from Port Allen. This collective of local shops and food trucks is the perfect place to support local, to a little souvenir shopping, and grab a snack if you’re hungry. It’s closed on Sundays and the food trucks are closed on Mondays so plan accordingly. 

Spend the rest of the afternoon recovering from your big adventure at the pool or the beach. 

I’d recommend dinner at the Dolphin or Merriman’s…both of which are located at the Shops at Kukui’ula (and both require reservations). Most of the shops close by 6 so I like to make dinner reservations for around then but show up a little early to do some shopping. It’s the best shopping you’ll find on Kauai. Day 3: Waimea Canyon + the West Side

You’ve GOT to see the Waimea Canyon…it’s one of the most beautiful and largest canyons in the world. It’s about an hour drive from Poipu on the west side of the island. 

Depending on how much time you want to spend there (you can just drive to the different lookouts in your car in an hour or two or you could spend the whole day hiking) will determine when you want to get started. 

If it’s my trip…I’d get up and get started early so I could be back at the beach/pool for the afternoon. 

On the way to Waimea, stop in historic Hanapepe town (said to be the inspiration behind Disney’s Lilo and Stitch) and have breakfast at Midnight Bear Breads. There’s also a (less crazy busy) Little Fish Coffee which you could try if you just loved it so much the first time or you skipped it on the first day. 

There’s also a wooden swinging bridge across the river that you’re not going to want to miss. But be respectful and stay out of people’s yards!

After you leave Hanapepe, continue on to Waimea and drive up to the canyon (once you get to Waimea town it’s still quite a drive up to the top). 

There are at least four overlooks at the top of the canyon (some in Kokee State Park) and you’ll want to see all of them. Each one offers a different vantage point, and one even has a lookout over Kalalau and the Napali Coast.

If you’re into hiking…Waimea State Park and Koke’e State Park both have some excellent hiking trails. If you want a moderate hike, try the Canyon Trail. At 3.4 miles round trip, it’s the most popular hike in the area and will give you a great view of Waipoo Falls. It takes about 2.5 hours to complete. Park at the Puu Hinahina Lookout (around mile marker 13.5) and pick up the trailhead there. For a more challenging hike, try the Awaawapuhi Trail, which has spectacular cliff and ocean views. It’s 6.2 miles round trip (3 hours) and the trail head can be found near mile marker 17.

If you’re looking for food in Waimea after (pretty much everything but the steakhouse closes by 4), Puka Dogs is supposed to be crazy good (I don’t eat hotdogs) and Jo Jo’s is always thrown up as one of the best shave ice spots on the island. 

If you want an epic sunset adventure, from Waimea it’s about another half hour out to Polihale Beach. It’s an isolated beach on Kauai’s west side just south of the Napali Coast. 

It’s the longest beach in Kauai (17 miles of white sand) and it’s perfect for long walks, beach combing, and watching the sunset. There are restrooms and showers, but other than that you’ll need to bring everything with you. It gets HOT and there’s very little shade so bring an umbrella with you and plenty of water. Plus you’ll need a high clearance vehicle (Jeep) and possibly 4WD to take it. It’s not a trip to do on a whim. Read all about it here . 

If that sounds like a bit much (it is for 95% of people), head back to Poipu and grab sunset dinner instead. 

Day 4: North Shore Adventure

The north shore is absolutely 100% the most beautiful part of Kauai. I get questions pretty often about if it’s really worth it to drive an hour plus from Poipu just to see it and I’ll tell you what I always tell people…if you go to Kauai and you don’t see the north shore…you haven’t been to Kauai. 

Depending on your adventure level, you can do a few different things on this day. Read this post that’s all about the north shore of Kauai. But here are some pointers for the day:

Hike the Kalalau trail . This is the best hike in Kauai (I’ll go so far as to say all of Hawaii) and if you’re at all able bodied then you really should make the effort and give it a go. 

The entire hike is 22 miles round trip but that requires an overnight camping permit (not to mention some serious dedication). But the first two miles (four miles round trip) is amazing and an absolute must. Plan 3 hours for this hike if you’re fit and hiking pretty much non stop.

The trail head is located at Ke’e beach in Ha’ena State Park, which is as far as you can go on the north shore (heading west). It’s about 30 minutes past Hanalei. 

If you’re up for a longer hike, once you reach Hanakapiai beach (the point where you have to turn around), hike two miles up through a bamboo forest to reach Hanakapiai falls. This will double your hike time and distance (5-6 hours and 8 miles). Also, do NOT get in the water at Hanakapiai beach! It’s pretty dangerous and many deaths have occurred there. Just admire from a distance.

But here’s what you absolutely HAVE to know…

*In an effort to control crowds at Haena State Park (Ke’e Beach and the Kalalau Trailhead) parking reservations are now required. You can make them online 30 days in advance , or you can pay for a reservation on the shuttle leaving from Princeville. Reservations sell out VERY quickly and the shuttle is quite a bit more expensive so you have to really be on it if you want to make this happen. 

Ke’e Beach (at the bottom of the Kalalau Trailhead) is the perfect place for a swim, some snorkeling, and picnic lunch whether or not you hike the Kalalau (but you’ll still need parking reservations to come here).  I suggest grabbing a lunch to go at Hanalei Gourmet and throwing it in a cooler for after (or during) your hike. Ke’e is very protected and one of the few good swimming spots on the north shore. It’s also an excellent snorkeling spot for beginners. It’s practically a swimming pool.

Some other “adventures” you’ll find on the north shore…

Snorkel at Tunnels . Tunnels is definitely the best snorkeling spot on Kauai, but it’s not super accessible. Bring your own gear because there’s nowhere to rent nearby (there are also no lifeguards and very little parking). 

This spot is pretty hidden, but it’s a little ways east of the Ha’ena State Park lot (you don’t need reservations for this lot, but it’s not very big). There are two direct road/pathway entrances with minimal parking. There’s not lot and there are plenty of “no parking” signs on the street. That’s how you know you’re near. If you’re having trouble finding it, just find the Haena State Park entrance and then walk down the beach to the right (it’s about a mile though).

Queen’s Bath. If you’ve done much research about top things to do in Kauai, you’ve likely heard of Queen’s Bath. It’s a sinkhole in the lava along the coast in the Princeville area that creates a natural swimming pool during calm days. Unfortunately, during high surf times (which can be unpredictable), it can be extremely dangerous. Numerous deaths have occurred here, however it doesn’t stop people from attempting it. 

I can’t recommend swimming in the pool under any conditions, BUT if you’d like to see it, the hike down to the pools is very pretty. In the Princeville resort area, there’s a small parking lot on Punahele Road. If there’s no parking available, you can pay to park at the golf course up the road. It’s a short (but often muddy and slippery) hike down where you’ll even pass a waterfall. I’d stay well away from the pools as even in calm weather, rogue waves can come out of nowhere. When I’m entering any area near the ocean, I like to hang back and watch the conditions for 15-20 minutes before deciding what a safe distance is. During high surf advisories, the trailhead will often be gated. Of course, many people will climb around the gates, but know that if you choose to do so you’re officially breaking the law and may be subject to fines (not to mention the eminent danger that the gate is supposed to be protecting you from ; )

Find Hideaways Beach . One of the north shore’s best beaches is pretty hidden (hence the name) and requires quite an adventure to find. It’s in Princeville (make the turn into the resort area). You’ll go about two miles through Princeville and then turn right into a tiny little parking lot just before you reach the former St. Regis’ guard shack (soon to be the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay). Just outside the parking lot, you’ll see a small pathway between the two fences. You’ll need good shoes to do this little trail (not flip flops!). There’s a pretty sketchy staircase you have to navigate before you get to the series of rope handles that will lead you to the hidden beach. Don’t miss this one!

If you’re aren’t up for a huge adventure, you can still see SOOOOOO much just from the car and a few overlooks. 

Don’t miss the main overlook coming into Hanalei out over the taro fields, and I would still drive all the way out to Ke’e Beach at the end of the road even though you’ll have to turn around without getting out of the car (assuming you don’t book parking reservations). 

Hanalei . Plan to spend a good bit of time around Hanalei. Hanalei Bay (don’t miss walking out onto the pier) is probably the most magical place in Hawaii. And the town of Hanalei is as cute as they come. You could spend a few hours just shopping and walking around. 

Have drinks at the Tahiti Nui…it’s a Kauai institution. Order the mai tai. You’re welcome. The pizza is also pretty good too. If you want a “nicer” meal, make dinner reservations at Bar Acuda. It’s tapas style and a big hit with the locals and tourists. Or if you haven’t hit the Dolphin in Poipu for dinner yet, arrive early to the one in Hanalei (it’s the original) to grab a table (no reservations). Their teriyaki ahi will change your life.

Day 5: Coconut Coast (Kilohana Plantation & Waterfalls)

Kauai’s east side (often called the Coconut Coast) usually gets overlooked between the epic scenery of the north shore and the resort paradise along the south shore, but there’s some good stuff here! 

I’m a breakfast person so I’d start with breakfast at Java Kai or Art Cafe Hemingway (check to make sure they’re open) in Kapa’a. There’s also a lot of cute shopping in Kapa’a that you may want to circle back to later in the day. 

If you haven’t seen a waterfall yet, you can’t leave Hawaii until that happens. Yes, there are a few that require major hikes, helicopter rides, etc. to see, but there’s two super easily accessible ones near Lihue. 

Start off with Opaekaa Falls. From highway 56, turn up Kuamoo road (580) and you’ll see the lookout (and parking lot) on the right hand side of the road.

Next head to Wailua Falls. These are the falls featured in the opening credits of Fantasy Island. It’s very easy to find and just outside of Lihue. Driving north from Lihue (highway 56), turn left on Maalo road in Hanamaulu. About 3 miles down the road, it dead-ends in the parking lot and overlook.

Fern Grotto. Depending on how much time you have, taking the boat tour to the fern grotto is a fun thing to do (especially if you have young kids or older folks in your travel party. Several boat tours leave daily and travel up the Wailua River to the fern grotto. They have entertainment on board (music and hula) and they’ll take you on a little tour up into the fern grotto where a group of musicians sings the Hawaiian Wedding Song. It’s all very Blue Hawaii. It’s not a must do thing, but it’s a nice activity that doesn’t require much physically so I thought I’d mention it here. 

Kilohana Plantation . Make the day’s main activity touring the Kilohana Plantation. I’ll be totally honest…I haven’t been here yet, but they’ve done a lot recently to make this a bonafide attraction and it’s tippy top of my list next time I’m on Kauai. 

The historic sugar cane plantation is near Lihue and has developed a pretty stellar roster of offerings and activities lately. I would book the two hour “Rum Safari” and definitely take a ride on the plantation train. There’s shopping and a lot to see around the grounds. 

Plan to end your evening here either with dinner at the Plantation House (so many people have told me this is their favorite meal on Kauai) or at their luau.

Here’s one more really important thing you need to know before your Hawaii trip…

Reservations You Need to Make BEFORE Your Hawaii Trip

You’ve got your airfare, hotel, rental car and your big activities booked, so you should be good to go, right? Wrong!

Travel is BOOMING in Hawaii so a lot of state and national parks used the closure and reopening to institute reservation systems at some of the island’s most popular spots to make things a little more sustainable.

That means that there are now over half a dozen sites (beaches, trailheads, etc.) that require advance reservations. And some sell out well before you arrive on the island so you really need to have some sort of a plan.

I recently saw somebody in a Hawaii travel group post in a panic that they didn’t know they had to make reservations for things in advance…they thought they could just show up and “go with the flow.” I was tempted to say, well, “as long as the flow doesn’t take you somewhere that requires reservations, you can!” ; )

But I don’t want YOU to be that person, so I’ve pulled together a list of all the places you need to reserve entry in advance (plus all the details on booking windows, price, links, etc.) and a handful of popular tourist hotspots that book out really far in advance too.

Haleakala National Park (Maui)

To visit Haleakala National Park for sunrise at the summit, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are required to enter the park gates between 3AM and 7AM (sunrise hours).

Online reservations are $1 per reservation/vehicle PLUS you’ll pay the park entrance fee of $30/vehicle when you arrive (National Park annual passes are also accepted at the gate).

The reservation booking window opens 60 days in advance at 7AM HST. There are also a limited number of tickets released two days before.

You can make one reservation every three days with the same account. So if you want to make reservations for back to back days (in case of weather/conditions), you’ll need to do so with separate accounts (email addresses).

If you can’t get reservations for sunrise, you can enter the park anytime after 7AM without reservations. The summit is spectacular during the day and you don’t need reservations for sunset.

I strongly recommend creating an account before and making sure you’re logged in at 7AM HST because it’s not uncommon for reservations to sell out quickly.

Waianapanapa State Park (Maui)

To visit Maui’s famous black sand beach at Waianapanapa State Park on the Road to Hana, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are required to visit the beach and are distributed in windows from 7AM-10AM, 10AM-12:30PM, 12:30PM-3PM, and 3PM-6PM. And they are pretty strict about exiting by the end of your window time (you can arrive anytime within your window).

It’s $5/person to enter plus $10/vehicle to park and those fees are paid when you book your time slot.

Reservations open up 30 days in advance.

Iao Valley State Park (Maui)

To visit the lush, green mountains and hike at Iao Valley State Park, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are offered for 90 minute time slots beginning at 7AM and ending at 6PM. They ask that you arrive within the first 30 minutes of your time slot.

Entry is $5/person plus $10/vehicle to park.

Diamond Head (Oahu)

To hike to the top of Waikiki’s famous Diamond Head, you must make reservations in advance here.

Reservations are offered in two hour increments beginning at 6AM (6AM-8AM, 8AM-10AM, etc.) and ending at 6PM. If you’re parking onsite, they ask that you arrive within the first 30 minutes of your reservation window.

Tip: I recommend booking one of the first two time slots because there isn’t much shade on this hike and it gets pretty hot.

Hanauma Bay (Oahu)

To snorkel at Oahu’s pristine Hanauma Bay, you must make reservations in advance here.

Entry times are staggered in 10 minute increments from 7AM to 1:20PM with roughly 1000 slots being assigned in advance every day.

Reservations can be made two days in advance and they open at 7AM HST. They’re usually gone in minutes (if not seconds).

If you’re unable to get an advanced reservation, you can try for a day of, walk in ticket. They open at 6:45AM and they only have a limited number available. Everyone in your group needs to be present when you purchase your tickets in person.

There are no reservations for parking and it’s first come, first serve. $3/vehicle.

It’s $25/person to snorkel at Hanauma Bay (12 and under, active military, and locals with HI ID are free).

The Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is open Wednesday through Sunday (CLOSED MONDAY AND TUESDAY) from 6:45AM-4PM. Last entry is at 1:30PM, the beach is cleared at 3:15PM and you have to leave the facility by 4PM.

Jellyfish patterns can also affect whether or not the bay is open so double check the day before/day of.

USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor (Oahu)

If you want to take the boat tour at Pearl Harbor out to the USS Arizona, it’s recommended to make advance reservations here.

Online reservations are guaranteed a specific boarding time to go out to the USS Arizona. If you’re unable to get an advance reservation, you can wait standby when you arrive. The line could be short (15 minutes or so) or long (hours) and it just depends on the day (if they’re having problems with the loading dock sometimes they don’t take many from the standby line) and the time of day.

Reservations are supposed to open up 60 days in advance, but keep an eye on your exact dates, because lately they’ve actually been opening up about 57ish days in advance???

They also release a small batch of tickets the day before.

The boat ride out to the USS Arizona is free, but it’s $1 to make the reservations online.

They recently started charging $7/vehicle for parking at Pearl Harbor.

Haena State Park / Kalalau Trail (Kauai)

If you want to hike Kauai’s famous Kalalau Trail, you must make advance reservations here. You’ve got three options here:

1) Parking & Entry: This is the most flexible option and also the most limited. THESE RESERVATIONS SELL OUT IN LESS THAN A MINUTE. There are three time slots available: 6:30AM-12:30PM, 12:30PM-5:30PM and 4:30PM to sunset. You can purchase multiple time slots if you want to stay longer. It’s $10/timeslot (parking) plus $5/person and you have to reserve every person when you initially book. Everybody has to arrive in the same car and your ID needs to match the reservation.

2) Shuttle & Entry: If you can’t get parking at the trailhead, there’s also a shuttle option. Shuttle reservations are $35/person (16+), $25/person (ages 4-15), 3 and under can ride free. The shuttle runs every 20 minutes 6:20AM to 6:40PM.

3) Entry Only: If you’re a Hawaiian resident (with HI ID) or someone WITH a Hawaiian resident, you can purchase entry only for $5/person with no advance reservations. Also, if you’re walking or biking to the trailhead you can do this option. But there is NOWHERE to park in the area to walk in. So this really only works for those with bikes or who are staying close enough to walk. They will tow your car if you park outside the designated areas.

The reservation window opens 30 days in advance at 12AM HST. The parking & entry option usually sells out in a minute, but the shuttle availability will last longer.

Other Things to Book in Advance

Hawaii is a busy place these days! Besides the state and national parks above, here’s a handful of miscellaneous things you should make reservations for in advance (if they’re on your radar):

Mama’s Fish House (Maui) : The iconic spot is the most popular restaurant in Hawaii and dinner reservations usually start filling up about 6 months in advance (they open up bookings 18 months in advance). Make reservations through their website and if the dates you want are already booked, you can join a waitlist. Most people have pretty good success getting in on the waitlist (even if it’s for lunch).

Old Lahaina Luau (Maui) : Honestly, any luau you’re planning to attend you should book early, but most people are usually shocked how far out the Old Lahaina Luau books out. Book it as soon as you know your dates (I think they open at the six month window). They also have a waitlist.

Kualoa Ranch UTV Tour (Oahu) : Everybody loves Jurassic Park so getting to ride UTVs where they filmed the movies is very popular. The ranch offers a lot of different tours but the UTV tours usually book out a couple of months in advance.

Spa Reservations : If you’re staying at a resort with a spa (or planning on visiting one), don’t wait until you arrive to make your reservations. I’d make them at least a month in advance.

Tee Times : Same for golf, reserve your tee times well in advance.

Dining Reservations : Any “fancy” or resort restaurant is likely to be booked up these days so if you like having a nice dinner every night, make your plans in advance.

How to Plan the Perfect Multi-island Trip to Hawaii

These eight tips will help you travel between Hawaii's islands with ease.

The Hawaiian archipelago includes more than 100 islands, atolls, and islets. But if you’re planning a visit, don’t worry, as you need not plot a 100-island itinerary. With the majority of the islands uninhabited and inaccessible, you can focus on four of the eight largest islands: Kauai , Oahu , Maui , and the Island of Hawaii (often referred to as the Big Island), with the option to add on a few others.

Here are some tips for planning an epic multi-island trip to Hawaii .

Determine travel dates and destinations.

Ideally, you should spend at least one week on each of the four islands. But if you don’t have a full month, plan for four to five days per island, then choose one or two regions within each. 

Make a list of things you want to do in order of importance. This will help you determine where to base yourself on each island and what to eliminate if needed. For example, if sleeping near an active volcano and night snorkeling with manta rays are two activities topping your list, book a couple of nights at the historic Volcano House — the only lodging within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park — on the Hilo side of the Island of Hawaii and a few nights at Mauna Kea Resort or The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort on the Kona side, where you can join a guided small group night snorkel with Manta Ray Advocates .

Don’t forget to factor in flight and drive times. Although some islands appear small on the map, weather, road conditions, and traffic can impact overall travel time. 

Also, consider when to go . Hawaii has microclimates, so weather can vary, but in general, summer is warm with minimal rainfall. This is ideal for beach lovers, but it’s also one of the peak travel times, with families visiting during summer break. Expect higher rates and larger crowds during this time, as well as the weeks surrounding major U.S. holidays such as Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. 

You may find lower rates and thinner crowds during the winter (with the exception of the holiday season), but the colder months are generally wetter, so if you’re traveling to Hawaii from November through March, be prepared for cooler temperatures, rain, and possible road closures and activity cancellations. The shoulder seasons from March to May (excluding spring break and Easter) and September to October tend to have comfortable weather conditions and slightly fewer crowds than peak seasons.

Identify your travel style.

Some travelers crave leisurely days at the beach, while others prefer an action-packed itinerary. Some gravitate toward lively, larger cities, while others enjoy slower-paced small towns . Discuss your expectations and interests with your travel companions so you can hone in on the regions, tours, and hotels best suited to you.

Do your research. I often hear visitors comment that Oahu is "too busy," yet they haven't ventured beyond Honolulu. Honolulu is the capital city and home to about one million people, so yes, it’s busy. Find an oasis amidst the chaos: With convenient locations, Espacio and The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach are tranquil retreats in the city. Or, if you’re not interested in the urban experience at all, skip the capital and head elsewhere on Oahu . 

You might be tempted to schedule every hour of your itinerary in order to make the most of your trip, but don’t overbook. Allow time for rest, and aim for balance, so you don't wind up exhausted. Follow an active day of touring with some leisure time or a spa treatment.

Although you can start and end wherever you choose, it’s wise to look at flight schedules to plot an efficient route. Kauai is in the northwest, and the Island of Hawaii is in the southeast, so starting in Kauai and traveling southeast — to Oahu, Maui, and then the Island of Hawaii — makes sense logistically. It also provides variety, from the slower pace of Kauai to a mix of urban adventures and cruising the countryside on Oahu and Maui. You'll end with a bang on the Island of Hawaii, where you can feel the energy of volcanic activity. In this case, you’ll also be following the order in which the islands were formed, so it’s a great way to experience them from oldest to youngest and observe the geological evolution along the way. 

When booking flights, consider multicity rather than a round-trip option. If you’ll be traveling the Kauai to the Island of Hawaii route suggested above, you can arrive in Kauai, book onward interisland flights to Oahu, Maui, and the Island of Hawaii, then depart from Kona. Keep in mind that some interisland flights are not direct and may require a stopover in Honolulu or Kahului, for example, so be sure to check before booking. You can often secure direct interisland flights by choosing one that departs earlier in the day.

While you can travel around the islands on your own, we recommend booking some guided experiences. Native Hawaiian guides and cultural practitioners, in particular, offer personal stories and context that will give you an entirely different — and much richer — experience. Plus, by booking with Native Hawaiian experts, you’re supporting the perpetuation of Hawaiian culture. 

Many hotels, like ‘Alohilani Resort and Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa on Oahu and Ka’anapali Beach Hotel on Maui, are increasingly providing complimentary, Native Hawaiian-led activities that include hula, Hawaiian language lessons, lei-making sessions, and sunrise ceremonies. Other properties, like Timbers and Kukui’ula on Kauai, offer farm tours to acquaint guests (and their taste buds) with the abundance of plants and produce grown there. Some hotels, including Halekulani , provide private tours or discounted or free entrance to local sites of significance such as Bishop Museum , Iolani Palace , and Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture, and Design . Be sure to ask about these offerings prior to booking your hotels. 

When it comes to physical activities such as hiking, guided tours with reputable operators like Kauai Hiking Tours help ensure your safety. And in some cases, a guided tour can afford access to extraordinary places, like Hualalai crater, a sacred site located on private land that only two tour operators — Uluha'o O Hualalai and Hawaii Forest & Trail — have permission to reach. Many popular places such as Hanauma Bay on Oahu now require reservations, and popular tours, including sunrise at Haleakalā on Maui and sunset at Mauna Kea on the Island of Hawaii, often sell out, so it’s best to book as far in advance as possible. You should also secure dinner reservations so you don’t miss out on your top choices or waste time waiting for a table. And don’t forget car rentals for each island, too; these do sell out and — with the exception of Honolulu, where shuttles, public buses, and ride-share options are available — it can be difficult and expensive to get around without your own wheels.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when traveling to Hawaii is assuming it’s always sunny and warm. If you’re planning to visit multiple islands, you’ll likely encounter a variety of microclimates and changing weather conditions. Come prepared with layers and appropriate footwear for your activities, and always pack a rain jacket. And, of course, pack a Hawaiian shirt or two.

Bring binoculars, too, to get a better view of wildlife such as endemic birds and migrating whales, as well as dynamic landscapes. If you’re fortunate enough to witness volcanic activity, you’ll be happy to have these on hand for a close-up view of bubbling lava. Some tours do include outdoor gear and equipment; inquire when booking.

If you have time and want to add another island to your trip, there are a few options available to visitors. You can take the ferry from Maui to Lanai for a day trip or spend a night or two and sink into that relaxed island life. 

If you’re interested in visiting Kalaupapa National Historical Park on Molokai, allow a few extra days. Keep in mind that flights to Molokai are limited, and as the island is home to vulnerable kupuna (elderly people), it's slowly reopening to visitors since the pandemic started.

If you prefer a private tour to a neighboring island, Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea can charter a yacht or helicopter from Maui to Lanai or Molokai. 

Although you’re not permitted to step ashore on Ni'ihau, the “Forbidden Island,” without an invitation, you can snorkel the waters nearby on a Holo Holo Charters Super Tour .

For you, Hawaii may be a dream destination. For those who live here, it's home and, for many, sacred. Travel with respect : Stay on marked trails, don’t enter private property, obey warnings (from posted signs, lifeguards, and law enforcement), and be mindful that the environment is fragile and the land has cultural, spiritual, and ecological significance.

Be flexible, too. Don’t be attached to a particular expectation or activity. Sometimes, plans change due to weather (like that time I flew to Kauai to see the famed cliffs of the Nā Pali Coast and colors of Waimea Canyon, only to find it all covered in clouds and fog). If you’re lucky enough to visit Hawaii, embrace the unexpected, stay present, and aim to enjoy the experience — rain or shine.

Best for Hiking

Each Hawaiian island has its own nickname for a reason. When you fly into Maui and Kauaʻi and get an aerial view of the two islands, it’s easy to understand why Maui is known as “The Valley Isle” and Kauaʻi is known as “The Garden Isle.” Maui’s towns are embraced by two major mountain ranges—Hāleakala and the West Maui Mountains—while Kauaʻi's ancient grounds are blanketed in lush greenery as so much time has passed since the island's last volcanic eruption. While the two islands both offer differing and breathtaking trails, Kauaʻi takes the lead for hiking.

Hiking on Kauaʻi

The Kalalau Trail on Kauaʻi's Nā Pali coast is a picture-perfect representation of Hawaiʻi's stunning beauty, making it one of the most sought-after hikes in the world. Set on the North Shore of Kauaʻi, the 11-mile journey into the Kalalau Valley leads you through verdant forest and dry red clay terrain, along scaling sea cliffs, lively beaches, and flowing streams. The trail ends at the secluded Kalalau Beach, a campground, and the refreshing Ho‘ole‘a Falls, where you can take a refreshing drip post-hike. If you don’t want to commit to the whole Kalalau Trail, there are shorter hikes along the way. On the other end of Kauaʻi, Waimea Canyon State Park is nicknamed “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” On the winding 26-mile drive to the canyon’s peak, there are scenic outlooks that make for great picnic stops or photo ops of the sweeping canyon layers. The park has several trail options for advanced and family-friendly hikes where you can check out thriving native plants.

Hiking on Maui

Maui is home to the otherworldly Haleakalā National Park , whose namesake volcano dominates the landscape at an impressive 10,023 feet tall. The summit of Haleakalā, which translates to “house of the sun,” is where the demigod Maui is said to have lassoed the sun from the sky, slowing down its descent and making the daylight last longer. Trekking to the top to watch the sun rise above the clouds almost feels like you’re on another planet. Locals often head to this sacred summit for ceremonies and to greet the sun with chanting.

Haleakalā has more than 30 miles of hiking trails ranging from 10-minute walks to overnight camping treks through desert-like ecosystems and shrublands. Whichever route you choose, you will be in awe of one of Hawaiʻi’s most awe-inspiring scenes, but don’t forget to dress warm—the high altitude and wind can reach below-freezing temperatures. And no trip to Maui is complete without driving through the iconic Road to Hana , the 52-mile route that snakes through the island’s northeastern coast alongside cliffs, thriving forestry, and countless waterfalls. There are many hikes along the way that can take anywhere from 10 minutes to up to two hours.

Wherever you end up, note that some parks on Maui and Kauaʻi use a reservation system for certain activities like hiking and camping. Check out Hawaiʻi’s Department of Land and Natural Resources website to book your entry or check the latest updates for closures, events, and weather warnings at the parks you hope to visit. Sometimes during the winter months, when it rains the most in Hawaiʻi, flash flood warnings prohibit hikers from visiting some parks with streams or waterfalls.

Best for Beaches

Whichever island you choose, you are sure to experience a sun-kissed, tropical getaway. However, if you're traveling to Hawaii mainly to enjoy the beaches, Maui has more to offer than Kauaʻi. That’s mostly because the island boasts large stretches of beach whose calmer waters make activities like swimming, kayaking, diving, and snorkeling much more accessible. Plus, Maui is one of the only Hawaiian islands with both black- and red-sand beaches, each one promising breathtaking views as you sunbathe or take a dip in the water.

On Kauaʻi, most of the driving is more inland, so not only do you not get the same coastal views as you would on Maui, but the beaches here are also a little more difficult to get to. However, if you’re equipped with the right vehicle and directions, you’ll be blown away by Kauaʻi's beaches , often surrounded by towering peaks of lush mountains.

Best for Food & Drink

If you’re looking for good dining options and food, Maui is the way to go. Its Lahaina town is lively with diverse restaurants and bars that are sure to meet your cravings. On Kauaʻi, the small towns of Kapaʻa, Poʻipū, and Hanalei have quaint eateries with good local food and produce, but be sure to get an early head start: In Hawaiʻi's smaller towns, many restaurants, and most shops really, shut down for the day once the sun goes down.

On both Maui and Kauaʻi, a good rule of thumb is that if you have your heart set on a certain restaurant, be sure that it's open when you want to go and make a reservation. If you're planning to cook any meals at your vacation rental or campsite, you may also want to hit up your nearest grocery store and get what you need ahead of time. Options for late-night snacking and drinking are limited the later it gets into the night.

Choosing Accommodations

For these small-town islands, it’s best to plan for things like your accommodation, rental car, and activities in advance because they can book up quickly. Airbnb and other short-term rental property restrictions are implemented across Hawaiʻi, and hotel rooms can easily reach maximum capacity during busy seasons like summer. Consider staying at inns, motels, B&Bs, cabins, or campsites to get a near-to-true Hawaiian island experience.

Getting Around

Getting around on both Maui and Kauaʻi is possible without a car, but very difficult if you’re hoping to venture away from your place of stay. To take advantage of the beaches, hiking, and other activities, you should definitely book the right kind of vehicle. Some terrain—especially on Kauaʻi—can feel more off-the-beaten-path, and requires sturdier wheels; consider booking a 4x4 if that’s within your interest. If you find yourself getting stuck in mud or getting a flat tire along the way, keep in mind that roadside assistance and cell service can be very limiting, especially in more rural towns.

Buses, taxis, and ride-share services are also available on both islands, but very limited. For travelers to Kauaʻi, you'd have to book a helicopter or boat tour to see the whole island, as the Nā Pali coast makes much of it inaccessible by car.

This portion of our website is here to help you focus on planning your trip and should allow you to organize what you want to do into simple itineraries.  Planning your vacation doesn’t have to be a chore, and hopefully, our recommendations will be of assistance in your preparation.

We’ve designed our Kauai itineraries around a set number of on-island Kauai days: offering one , three , five , and seven-day itineraries for exploring the island, soaking in the best sights, and ensuring your precious time (and potentially money) on Kauai is utilized wisely. We’ve tried to balance our itineraries between those who seek adventure and those looking to find a good beach and relax. Overall, we want your experience to be exactly what you’ve dreamed of when planning your Kauai trip.

Overview of kauai -  the ‘garden isle’.

Kauai is the fourth largest landmass in the Hawaiian island chain that includes eight major islands and 124 islets. The archipelago consists of numerous volcanic islands in the central Pacific Ocean stretching in a 1,500-mile crescent from Kure Island in the northwest to the Big Island of Hawai‘i in the east, encompassing an area of 6,459 square miles. The eight major islands at the eastern end of the chain are, from west to east, Niihau, Kaua‘i, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and the Big Island of Hawai‘i. 

Our journey begins on the island of Kauai. Kauai is the oldest of all the main Hawaiian Islands, dating back some 5.1 million years. Kaua‘i lies approximately 105 miles across the Kauai Channel, northwest of Oahu. The island is nearly circular in shape with a land area encompassing 533 square miles, which is 25 miles long by 33 miles wide at its furthest points. Of volcanic origin, the highest peaks on this mountainous island are Kawaikini, at 5,243 feet, followed by Mount Wai‘ale‘ale near the center of the island, at 5,148 feet above sea level. The wettest spot on earth, with an annual average rainfall of 450-470 inches, is located on the east side of Mount Wai‘ale‘ale. This high annual rainfall has eroded deep valleys in the central mountain, carving out ridges, canyons, and valleys with many scenic waterfalls. 

The city of Lihue, on the island’s southeast coast, is the seat of Kauai County and the largest city on the island.  Waimea, on the island’s southwest side and once the capital of Kauai, was the first place visited by explorer Captain James Cook in 1778. Waimea Town is located at the mouth of the Waimea River, whose flow formed one of the most scenic canyons in the world, 3000 foot deep Waimea Canyon. Mark Twain once dubbed it the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” 

Kauai is also home to the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Missile Range Facility. It’s tucked away in the canyons near Waimea, and unless you go looking for it, you’ll never even know it is there.

Kaua‘i really is a true hidden gem of sorts. Over 90% of the island cannot be reached by road. In fact, the most beautiful part of the whole island has no road near it – and a lot of folks honestly like it that way. Kauai has roads stretching around it from the northwest coast, starting at Ke‘e Beach, moving clockwise along the eastern coast (through Kapa‘a and Lihue) and then around to the west coast (through Hanapepe and Waimea). Finally, it heads north up to the ridges of Waimea and Koke‘e State Park overlooking the inaccessible Na Pali coast on the west side of the island. There is no way to drive from Waimea/Koke‘e to the starting point, and there likely never will be (you’ll have to turn around). The Alaka‘i Swamp has stumped the U.S. Corps of Engineers on more than one occasion. The army’s telephone poles from the last world war are all that remains of any attempt to navigate that part of the island.  But don’t worry, you can still see many of the wonders of Kauai by doing a bit of hiking. In our daily itineraries, in the adventure section especially, we’ll take you on a few of our favorite trails.

Accommodations on Kauai & Where to Stay Summary

On Kauai, you’re probably staying in one of three geographic locations - on the north shore near Princeville, in one of the many hotels that line the Coconut Coast along the east shore, or down south in the Poipu resort area. Don’t worry if one of the three areas noted above isn’t you’re starting point, as there are a number of accommodations, b&bs, inns, etc scattered across the island. Regardless of where you’re staying, we’ll still help you plan accordingly.

Getting Around Kauai

On Kauai, a rental car is definitely the best option for getting around the island and viewing all the sights we detail in our itineraries. The rental rates in Hawaii are often some of the cheapest anywhere in the world because the competition is fierce.

There is no bus service on the island and taxi services are both expensive and illogical for sight-seeing purposes. Mopeds and bikes can be a practical alternative for day excursions along with the drier south shore, but are not as useful in other parts of the island, especially where steep inclines prevail such as on Waimea Canyon Drive in west Kauai.

Summary of what to pack on your Kauai trip

Regardless of how much you’ve traveled in the past and where you’ve been, there is one good rule to follow when coming to Hawaii, leave as much as you can at home. Seriously, bring only what you’ll need during your stay and nothing more. For starters, schlepping around three suitcases is NOT what you want to be doing after getting off a long plane ride. Next, consider that long pants, dress clothes, and anything else formal really have no use in Hawai‘i (unless you are staying in a very exclusive resort). Chances are a pair of shorts and an old Aloha shirt are all you’ll need for even some fine dining.

As far as clothing goes, that’s usually a few pairs of shorts, several T-shirts, sandals or flip-flops (slippahs as Hawaii residents call them), and a good visor or hat, anything made of a cotton blend is usually good. A light jacket might also be nice for those visits to higher elevations.

With the motto, “less is more” in mind, here are a few other items to bring. Sunblock (the UV on Hawai‘i is typically 10+ in the spring, summer, and fall), a backpack (for any hikes) and a water bottle, slippers (flip flops, shower shoes, zoris), mask, snorkel, and fins (or rent locally instead), two bathing suits (one to wear while the other dries) and a cover-up, your phone or a camera, lightweight raincoat or poncho (for mountain/rain forest hiking), bug spray with DEET (for any forest hikes), flashlight (if the sun goes down before your hike ends or for night walks on the beach), hiking boots and hiking rods, and most importantly a list of all your troubles to leave behind.  For more information on what to pack, seeing our What to Pack When Visiting Hawaii article.

Three Day Itinerary for Kauai

We'll officially kick off our itinerary suggestions by quickly covering the days you both arrive and depart. While they are not completely a wash in terms of planning something to actively do or participate in those days, we like to keep them open and use them for relaxing after we arrive and before we depart.

Arrival Day on Kauai

Let the first day you arrive be a day to adjust to the islands. Grab a bite to eat, pick up supplies and/or groceries, enjoy your first Hawaiian sunset that evening, and get to bed early as it has likely been a long day. If you’re flying in from another island, as we often do, then some light sightseeing probably won’t be a problem once you’re set up with your new rental, etc. But generally, we advise people to take it easy the first day, soak in their local surroundings, and acclimate to Hawaiian time.

Departure Day from Kauai

Like your arrival day, this day is meant to wind down from your trip and prepare for your jump to another island or for the journey home. We suggest grabbing a bite to eat from one of your favorite local restaurants near your accommodation and maybe some final souvenir shopping at some of the many stores and local shops around the island. Undoubtedly, the local community would appreciate your business. In Hawaii there are no “Goodbye’s” - so we’ll say A Hui Hou, which in Hawaiian means ‘Until we meet again.’ Aloha!

Day 1: Beach Time and Sunset

Today we will head straight to one of Kauai's stunning beaches. Poipu Beach on the south shore is a great choice with its golden sands and snorkeling opportunities. Spend the day swimming, sunbathing, and exploring the underwater world. Don't miss the chance to witness a breathtaking sunset over the ocean before enjoying a delicious dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 2: Waimea Canyon and Hanapepe Town

Today, embark on a scenic adventure to Waimea Canyon, the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." Drive up to the Waimea Canyon Lookout and take in the awe-inspiring views. Go for a short hike along one of the trails to immerse yourself in the natural beauty. Afterward, visit Hanapepe Town, known for its art galleries and nostalgic charm. Explore the shops, stroll along the main street, and snap photos at the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge.

Day 3: Napali Coast Boat Tour

On your final day, experience the legendary Napali Coast on a boat tour to begin your day or earlier in the afternoon. Join a tour departing from either the north or south shore to witness the dramatic cliffs, verdant valleys, and cascading waterfalls. Keep an eye out for dolphins, sea turtles, and seasonal humpback whales. Listen to fascinating stories about the Napali Coast's geological wonders and cultural significance from your knowledgeable guide.

Itinerary Conclusion

Although a three-day trip may be shorter, you can still make the most of your time by enjoying the island's stunning beaches, exploring the breathtaking Waimea Canyon, and immersing yourself in the natural wonders of the Napali Coast.
