Description

What is Kwells?

Kwells is a travel sickness preventative medication. It contains the ingredient hyoscine which is used to treat motion sickness.

How does it work?

The hyoscine blocks the functioning of the naturally found chemical acetylcholine. Blocking the acetylcholine, will reduce the amount of saliva produced by the salivary glands as well as secretions in the lungs. It is not yet fully understood how motion sickness is prevented by the use of hyoscine, however, it is thought that it prevents messages between your inner ear and the part of your brain that controls vomiting. It also relaxes the wave-like muscle contractions that take place in the walls of your stomach.

Is Kwells suitable for me?

If you experience travel or motion sickness, Kwells may be right for you. It is suitable for adults and children over 4 years.

Trimethoprim is commonly prescribed to treat urinary tract infections, a prevalent health issue affecting the urinary system. This medication is effective against a range of bacterial infections, notably those affecting the urinary and respiratory tracts. Trimethoprim works by targeting and inhibiting a substance called folic acid, which is crucial for the growth and reproduction of bacteria. By disrupting the production of folic acid, Trimethoprim hinders the development of bacteria, thereby helping to clear infections. While it's primarily known for its effectiveness in treating urinary tract infections, it's also used for certain types of respiratory tract infections. However, like any medication, the safety of Trimethoprim for an individual depends on various factors including their overall health, other medications they may be taking, and their specific medical history. It's important to consult a healthcare professional to determine if Trimethoprim is a safe and appropriate treatment option.

Are there any foods that should be avoided when taking Kwells?

We recommend you read the patient information leaflet for this product thoroughly before taking the treatment. This is essential to understanding any interactions that can occur and to take the medication safely.

Typically, it is recommended to avoid alcohol while taking the medication or other antibiotics, please consult your doctor for more guidance.

Can I buy Kwells from Boots?

It is generally possible to purchase medication, including Kwells200mg, from UK pharmacies like Boots. However, I recommend checking the Boots website or contacting Boots directly for the most current and accurate information. Remember to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new medication.

Can I buy Kwells from Superdrug?

If you would like to buy Kwells, you will need to check availability on the Superdrug website.

Can I buy Kwells from Amazon?

Amazon does not sell medication such as Kwells, as they are not a pharmacy service provider. Always check with Amazon to see what they sell.

How long does Kwells take to work?

The time it takes for a Kwells 200mg to work can vary greatly depending on several factors, such as the strength, the individual's age, weight, and overall health, as well as any potential interactions with other medications or substances. Generally, the effects of Kwells may be noticeable within the time frame outlined by the prescribing pharmacist. It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and instructions provided by your healthcare professional, and to consult them if you have any concerns or questions about the medication's efficacy or possible side effects.

How effective is Kwells?

The effectiveness of Kwells 200mg can vary significantly depending on various factors, such as the dosage, the condition being treated, the individual's age, weight, and overall health, as well as the presence of any other medications or substances that might interact with it. While some medications may be highly effective for certain individuals and conditions, others might experience a lesser degree of benefit or may require adjustments to the dosage or additional treatments to achieve the desired results.

Additional Information on Trimethoprim 200mg

Trimethoprim 200mg, the usual dose, is a potent antibiotic primarily used to treat bacterial infections, particularly those related to urinary infections such as cystitis. This medication operates by inhibiting the bacterial production of a vital substance, folic acid, thereby preventing the growth and spread of the infection.

While it is highly effective in managing urinary tract infections, it's essential to be aware of certain precautions. Individuals with severe liver problems, or blood disorders, should consult their healthcare provider before using Trimethoprim, as it may not be the safest option for them. Additionally, it's a common misconception that cranberry juice can treat urine infections; however, while it may help alleviate cystitis symptoms by preventing bacteria from adhering to the bladder walls, it should not replace medical treatment with antibiotics like Trimethoprim.

As with any antibiotic, it's crucial to complete the full course as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to effectively treat bacterial infections and prevent antibiotic resistance.

Best travel/sea sickness tablet

BlueBloodedBlue · 14/05/2022 16:38

As I've got older, I'm increasingly suffering from travel sickness. Any recommendations for non-drowsy tablets or are they all much of a muchness?

Kwells don’t make me drowsy

My DDs swear by Boots own brand. Both were unaffected on the Scilly ferry in bad weather when the rest of their group were 🤢

Stugeron. UK ones much lower dosage than the same product in Spain but till seemed fairly effective on my last trip across the Bay of Biscay.

Boots own brand are my favourite non drowsy. They are the same formulation as Kwells. Phenergan if you want drowsy.

fussychica · 14/05/2022 17:04

Second Stugeron.

Cyclizine but you might need a prescription - it seems to come and go from being available OTC. If not Stugeron is not a bad substitute (25mg).

Benefit of quells & the boots own ones is they are quick acting so you can take only if you start feeling unwell. Whereas sturgeron has to be taken 2 hrs in advance. Boots own are my faves

Stugeron. Saved me on a messy ferry trip to the Scillies, and recommended by my host there.

If you want SERIOUSLY effective travel sickness relief you can buy patches called Scopoderm patches. They can be got on private prescription, or they can be bought online but you go through a 'health check' questionnaire before it lets you buy them, to ensure you really want them for travel. Because they are only available privately, they are very expensive, about £34 for 2 patches or about £49 for 4, but each patch lasts up to 72 hours. Usually a patch is applied below the hairline, behind the ear. These patches are used by scientists travelling to places such as Antarctica, where the ships must cross the notorious 'Drakes Passage' sea voyage, which is very, very rough most of the time. There isn't much else that can cope with such seasickness. Depends on how seasick you get! The wording on the medication states: "The Scopoderm patch contains an active ingredient called 'hyoscine hydrobromide', which belongs to a group of medications named antimuscarinics. Hyoscine prevents motion sickness by interfering with the communication of particular nerve messages that would usually trigger vomiting and sickness". Might be useful for someone to know this, perhaps....

I would of said Stugeron previously, but have just been on a quite choppy cruise and used Avomine - which I bought in Superdrug - Brilliant things I would now not use anything else

Avomine are excellent, and I also use stugeron. Kwells make me feel high/drunk, to the point where I find it hard to walk in a straight line, but don’t have the same affect on my dd.

JoyRide are the only tablets that work for my son.

Sturgeon here too

Stugeron that should say (bloody autocorrect)...

Boots own brand are great, my children and I take them.

Boots and joy rides have the active ingredient hyoscine which is what's in the patches mentioned above. I find they're very effective

Kwells is also hyoscine hydrobromide, like the above patches (although perhaps a lower dose). I do prefer Stugeron personally, but you need to remember to take 2 hours prior, unlike Kwells which is just 20 mins. I got very nauseous with Kwells on an empty stomach.

How to Deal with Travel Sickness

Travel sickness is something that needs to be felt to be believed. So, if your stomach flips at the mere sight of a moving vehicle – we’re here to help deal with the drama.

Travel sickness headache

What is Travel Sickness?

Some people see a beautiful boat. Others see a swaying machine that induces ripples of nausea. Some people see a car humming along the countryside. Others see a zooming engine across a dizzying road. And don’t get us started on aeroplanes!

Travel sickness, or motion sickness, is when conflicting signals are sent to the brain from the eyes and the inner ears (which is what our body uses for balance). This mismatch of information can occur when travelling as the eyes are often focused on a moving image while the body is still.

As the name suggests, coping with travel sickness is not pleasant. Symptoms can include spells of dizziness, nausea, vomiting, cold sweats and headaches.

Remedies for Travel Sickness

So your friends are bugging you to go on that summer road trip, but you can’t stomach even the thought. Don’t miss out on all the fun and instead subside the sickness with these helpful treatment options.

Take Travel Sickness Tablets

If you’ve identified that you’re prone to suffering from motion sickness, then it’s advisable to take hyoscine before travelling - however always check with a pharmacist to make sure they are suitable for you. Although they can reduce nausea and vomiting they do come with additional side effects including blurred vision, drowsiness and blurred vision.

Always ensure you take the recommended dose in the time frame to get effective results.

Alternative Tips & Tricks

Those with travel sickness know that it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach to treating. But, you may find that one or a combination of these self-care remedies can help relieve symptoms:

  • Look at a fixed spot. Staring at a stable object can help keep focus on one thing instead of a fast-moving image.
  • Avoid large meals before travelling. It may sound simple enough, but we know how tempting that big burger can be at the motorway services!
  • Close your eyes. This one has a mixed response, but sometimes a quick cat nap or time away from a moving image can help ease motion sickness symptoms.

Kwells: Buying Bayer’s motion sickness tablet medicine online in the UK

Kwells is a tablet medication developed and marketed by Bayer pharmaceutical company. This medicine is commonly used as a fast-acting relief from travel and motion sickness symptoms, most notably nausea. In just 20 to 30 minutes following consumption, Kwells can reliably block the disorienting signals travelling from the inner ear to the brain, thus eliminating motion sickness altogether.

What’s on this page:

What is travel sickness.

Travel sickness, also known as motion sickness is a condition which affected a majority of people at least once in their lives. While it is somewhat more common among children and women, it can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender. Most commonly, motion sickness occurs during vehicular transits and especially during long journeys via airplane or a ship, hence its name. However, many people can experience the symptoms even when travelling by a car. Most commonly, those symptoms will include nausea, dizziness and vomiting if the motion causing the problem doesn’t stop.

Motion sickness causes

Travel sickness occurs when there is discordant information being fed to the brain, more specifically, when the visual stimuli don’t correspond to the perception of movement by the balance centres in the inner ear. For example, eyes might detect stationary environment while the inner ear might detect movement. If this, or vice versa, occurs, when these signals are sent to the brain, they will create confusion and consequently activate the receptors in the vomiting centre, thus creating the feelings of sickness.

How does Kwells prevent nausea?

Kwells is very adept at providing fast relief to the symptoms of motion sickness, most notably the characteristic nausea. This tablet achieves its goal thanks to its active ingredient, hyoscine hydrobromide which can dull the effects of signals sent from the inner ear to the brain, while inhibiting the activity of receptors in the vomiting centre. While you will still feel slightly uncomfortable due the sensation of movement, the effects on the brain will be significantly lessened.

As a branded medicine, Kwells is widely used in the UK and if you are looking to buy it, you can do so with a valid prescription in a pharmacy of your choice.

Can I buy Kwells online?

Yes, Kwells can easily be obtained online from an online clinic of your choice. Of course, you will still need a valid prescription to do this. Most online clinics now offer you the service of online consultations with a doctor employed there, either through a live chat app, or through a customized questionnaire. After making sure that Kwells is suitable for you, the doctor will issue a prescription and use it that very moment to order the medicine and send it directly to the address you provided.

However, when buying medicines online, you should be careful to only contact those companies that are licenced for selling prescription medicines and those which will either ask you for a prescription, or providing you with the means to obtain one. Otherwise, they might be operating outside the law and should be avoided.

How is Kwells used?

In order to ensure optimal results, it is best to adhere to the instructions provided by your doctor and get familiar with the details provided in the official patient information leaflet that is issued within every box of Kwells. Here we will not go in-depth on this question, but will provide you with just the most basic guidelines, so you can get the idea of how Kwells is used and what should you expect.

  • Always take as prescribed
  • The usual dose is one tablet
  • Take the medicine approximately half an hour before you intend to travel
  • Depending on the length of your journey, you might want to take another tablet after 6 hours
  • Do not take more than three tablets per 24 hours
  • Tablets can be both chewed and sucked
  • Don’t exceed the prescribed amount

What are Kwells side effects?

Certain side effects have been documented in people using Kwells, although they are rarely serious. If side effects do manifest, those which are most commonly experienced include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Dilated pupils
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Increased body temperature

For a more comprehensive list of known side effects, please refer to the official patient information leaflet that is issued within every pack of Kwells.

Kwells contraindications: Is Kwells the right choice for me?

Kwells is relatively safe medicine and most people can use it without any problems. However, as is the case with all prescription medicines, there are some situations when the use of Kwells might be contraindicated. When it comes to the possibility of adverse interaction of Kwells and some other medicine you might be taking at the moment, we can mention:

  • Antihistamines
  • Antidepressants
  • Domperidone
  • Metoclopramide
  • Antipsychotics
  • Sublingual nitrates

In addition to this, certain medical conditions might make Kwells use unsafe. These include:

  • Blocked intestine
  • Pyloric stenosis
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Enlarged prostate

Additional attention will need to be paid if you are affected by:

  • Heart disease
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Metabolic or gastrointestinal conditions
  • Inability to urinate comfortably
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Susceptibility to seizures
  • Down’s syndrome

On the other hand, using Kwells during pregnancy or when breastfeeding is not generally recommended, but is possible if deemed necessary by the doctor.

While using Kwells, you should avoid driving and operating heavy machinery if you experience drowsiness as a side effect of using Kwells.

Finally, must not drink alcohol when using this medicine.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

kwells travel sickness superdrug

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

kwells travel sickness superdrug

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

kwells travel sickness superdrug

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

kwells travel sickness superdrug

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

kwells travel sickness superdrug

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
