Full Synopsis

Cathy and Jamie's relationship has lasted five years. As the story begins, Cathy is at the end of the relationship while Jamie is at the beginning. With inter-cutting scenes, we watch Jamie move forward in time as Cathy moves backward ("Still Hurting").

Cathy has just found a note from her husband, Jamie, signifying the end of their marriage. While she still struggles with their break-up, she feels that he has easily moved on without her.

Five years prior, Jamie has just met Cathy. He is soaring from the high of it. He recounts his past relationships, feeling as if he's been waiting for her all of his life ("Shiksa Goddess").

Cathy (moving backwards) is hopeful for the healing of their marriage. Jamie has come to meet her in Ohio, where she has been working as a performer ("See I'm Smiling"). She believes that he will see her show and they will be able to spend time together. Although it's her birthday, she is let down when he has to leave earlier than expected for a party back home.

After their first date, Jamie has made a phone call to a potential literary agent – a contact made through his college professor. Unbelievably, this agent seems interested in his work. He is 23 years old. Soon his career begins to soar, and Jamie decides that he wants to move in with Cathy. His life is moving at top speed, but no matter; he's living the way that he wants ("Moving Too Fast").

Catherine's career is struggling. She's been turned down by a theatrical agent. As she waits patiently during a book signing of Jamie's, someone asks her what it's like to be married to a famous author. She expresses how she rides out his manic writing spells, where he completely shuts her out emotionally, then suddenly lets her back in ("I'm a Part of That").

It's their second Christmas together, and Jamie reads a story he wrote for her ("The Schmuel Song"). It is intended to inspire her to go out and pursue her dreams of becoming an actress. He tells her to quit her day job and go and be happy. He also tells her how lucky he is to be in love with her.

Cathy has gotten a summer stock job in Ohio. The situation is less than desirable, but she's trying to make the most of it. Meanwhile, Jamie is back in New York, his latest book a bestseller. Cathy writes a letter to Jamie as she anxiously awaits his visit ("A Summer in Ohio").

Jamie is alone, prepping himself to propose to Cathy. She appears in her wedding dress and meets him at the altar. Physically together for the first time during this show, they exchange vows and promises of an undying love ("The Next Ten Minutes").

Jamie, now married, begins to feel the temptation and attraction of other women whom he meets at parties. His success has made him the center of attention and, though he feels the pull, he loves Cathy and believes his marriage will remain strong ("A Miracle Would Happen"). He calls Cathy, who is out of town working, and promises to meet her as soon as he can escape his publisher. Cathy has just auditioned for and gotten another job ("When You Come Home to Me").

Cathy shares with her father the stress and difficulty of daily auditioning and daily rejection ("Climbing Uphill"). At another audition, she flounders as a million different things about her life with Jamie race through her head. She is determined, however, to have her own career and not live in the shadow of her now-famous husband. Jamie is doing a reading at a bookstore. The passage he reads is a metaphor for Cathy's drive and the feeling of his isolation from her.

Jamie is in the middle of a fight with Cathy. He has just gotten a book published and wants her to go to the party the publisher is throwing for him. She refuses. He doesn't feel supported by her and does not understand why she is angry ("If I Didn't Believe in You").

Cathy is driving Jamie to meet her parents. She is happy and excited, talking about her disappointments of the past in contrast to her bright future with him ("I Can Do Better Than That").

Jamie wakes up beside another woman. He knows that he must go see Cathy in Ohio. Fighting panic and a feeling of inevitability, he admits to the other woman that he has fallen in love with her ("Nobody Needs to Know").

Cathy floats on air at the end of her first date with Jamie. They have shared their first kiss, and she wants the magical moment to last forever. She bids him goodbye until tomorrow. At the same time, Jamie ends their relationship. He simply bids her goodbye.

Character Breakdown

Show history, inspiration.

The Last Five Years was written during the two years that Jason Robert Brown toured the country as conductor and musical director of the national tour of another one of his shows, Parade . Distraught with the state of musical theatre style at the time, he wanted to create an emotionally intimate, musically complex piece. Brown's musical style, although it only uses a select number of instruments, draws on a significant number of genres, from classical to rock to klezmer.

Productions

The Last Five Years , a sung-through musical written by Jason Robert Brown, premiered at the Northlight Theatre in Skokie, Illinois, in 2001. The production ran for two months and starred Lauren Kennedy and Norbert Leo Butz. The show reportedly sold more tickets in a single weekend than any other production at that theatre before.

With new producers, the musical later opened at the Minetta Lane Theatre Off-Broadway on March 3, 2002, closing on May 5 of the same year. Sherie Rene Scott stepped in to star opposite Butz, as Kennedy had taken off for a prior commitment. Since its closing, The Last Five Years has been produced across hundreds of American cities, in addition to Australia, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, France and the Philippines. The musical's regional popularity spurned an Off-Broadway revival at the Second Stage Theatre in 2013. It was directed by Jason Robert Brown, himself.

Cultural Influence

  • The Last Five Years has been translated into a handful of other languages, including Dutch, Japanese, German and Italian.
  • The musical was named one of TIME Magazine 's top ten shows of 2001.
  • A film adaptation of the stage musical was released in 2014, starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan.

Critical Reaction

"Brimming with persistent melodies, throughout lyrics and a heartfelt, compelling story." – Associated Press

"[Jason Robert Brown] turns a modest, 80-minute, two-character musical into a richly satisfying emotional journey." – TIME Magazine

"I can't think of any better way to celebrate the arrival of spring than by spending 90 exhilarating minutes with The Last Five Years , Jason Robert Brown's giddily sorrowful eulogy for a brief marriage." – Bloomberg News

"It's instantly clear... that this poignant, richly dramatic and piercingly honest two-character show is destined to be a hit." – The Chicago Sun-Times

"Jaw-dropping!  A gem of a show from Jason Robert Brown." – New York Magazine

Cathy tells the story from the end of their marriage; Jamie begins from when they first meet. As the musical unfolds, Cathy moves backward in time to the beginning of the relationship as Jamie moves toward the end; they meet only once, in the middle, at their wedding. Virtual Theater Review: THE LAST FIVE YEARS (ICT, Long Beach)

Post image for Virtual Theater Review: THE LAST FIVE YEARS (ICT, Long Beach)

by Tony Frankel on May 26, 2021

in Theater-Los Angeles , Virtual

Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years  is contextually brilliant: it is a two-character musical that starts at the end of a five year relationship for the woman, but at the beginning for the man. Her songs go backward in time and his forward. In the middle of the 85 minute, intermissionless show, they meet in the middle, which also happens to be their wedding day. This structure allows us to see a relationship from two different perspectives. He is a novelist who rises to notoriety which such rapidity that he is incapable of meeting his wife’s needs. While he schmoozes in literary circles in New York, her dreams of acting lead her to summer stock in Ohio.

They’re perfect for each other. They’re truly in love. But this is real life, which can get in the way of the real thing. We know right off the bat where it is headed and where it all began. At first, it might seem like Jamie ( John Battagliese ) and Cathy ( Gabriela Carrillo ) are in two different relationships, almost schizophrenically so, because the songs they sing (and virtually the entire show is in song) seem so opposite. But this is more than just because of how different the two characters are. It’s because we’re watching his  songs in a logicial, chronological order, whereas we are watching  hers from the end of the relationship backward.

last five years international tour

That Mr. Brown manages to capture our hearts is nothing short of a miracle: his songs are engaging, wistful, funny, melancholic and always insightful. The two-person cast and a small orchestra means this has been revived constantly for the last 20 years. (Northlight Theatre in Chicago, where the show originated, is having a Virtual 20th Anniversary reunion with original star Norbert Leo Butz this very week.) This is one of Brown’s first shows before he became a household name with  Parade ,  The Bridges of Madison County ,  Honeymoon in Vegas  and more.

last five years international tour

Still, with a thorny structure, no plot intrigue, and only two performers, this musical and its many showstoppers are tough to pull off. Not surprisingly, International City Theatre, which has done awesome COVID-era streaming-Zoom interpretations this season with a captivating Art and the HI-larious Slow Food, again manages to convince us that the performers are on the same stage as each other. Additionally, the engaging and perfectly cast Battagliese  and Carrillo use their vocals for character effect more than showing off their pipes — which are terrific indeed. They’re supported by that gorgeous score (in many cases, the cello chords convey as much as Cathy does) that is handled with love by a superb tiny band, led by musical director Graham Sobelman .

I’m not sure if it was intentional by director Jamie Torcellini and Video Editor and Stage Manager  Jessie Vacchiano , but a lot of the backgrounds (a field, a theater) seem to have a gauzy look — it substantiates that this is all in memory. And since the absolute best way to see this song cycle is in an intimate space, and you can’t get any more intimate than Zoom.

Review: Close Quarters and Distant Love in ‘The Last Five Years’

Casting Black actors and filming in a claustrophobic New York apartment revitalizes Jason Robert Brown’s popular two-character musical.

last five years international tour

By Maya Phillips

Breakups, hookups, divorces, engagements: Even if you haven’t been afflicted yourself, you’ve surely heard stories of the dramatic changes Covid-19 has wrought on relationships, as though Cupid himself got feverish and went rogue.

It’s unsurprising, given how the pandemic has redefined space, shrinking the square footage of our lives to a house or a studio apartment. Proximity became a test, and if you don’t believe me, the proof is in Out of the Box Theatrics and Holmdel Theater Company’s gorgeously performed and neatly contained virtual production of “The Last Five Years.”

Plot-wise, you may already know the lowdown: Created by Jason Robert Brown, the 2001 musical is about the beginning and ending of a five-year relationship between two young New Yorkers. Each side of the story is enacted separately, and in opposite chronological order; Cathy (Nasia Thomas), a struggling actress, begins the tale in the future, after the fights and farewells, while Jamie (Nicholas Edwards), a talented novelist on the path to celebrity, starts in the past, in the exciting early days of courtship. Their paths only cross once, in the middle of the musical, during their wedding.

Though the show is barely old enough to be of legal drinking age, it’s had many lives. Consider the myriad productions we’ve recounted in this newspaper: in 2002, at the Minetta Lane Theater ; in 2012, at Crossroads Theater Company ; in 2013, at Second Stage Theater ; and in 2016, a benefit concert with Cynthia Erivo and Joshua Henry at Town Hall. I’ll even take a moment to recall the tragically limp 2015 film version , starring the otherwise button-cute Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan.

And yet for all of this, “The Last Five Years” was and remains just … fine. The diverging timelines are often confusing, the songs workable but nothing extraordinary and the character portraits rely too heavily on the clockwork conceit.

Which is what makes this virtual production, directed by Jason Michael Webb (the musical director of several Broadway shows), that much more delightful. For one, a Black Cathy and Jamie feel like a novelty, given how many productions cast white leads by default. And Webb’s arrangements, which anchor Brown’s score with more soul and strut, allow Thomas and Edwards to revitalize the songs.

“Still Hurting” is a showcase for Thomas’s regal timbre, her vibrato recalling the crystal-clear tone of a knife clinked on a champagne glass.

Edwards, who recently starred as the Son of God in the Berkshire Theater Group’s pandemic-era production of “Godspell ,” wears the kind of toothy grin that could bring out the sun on a cloudy day, and his vocals are just as sunny, especially in his character’s effervescent early numbers.

Later, Edwards, as an older, restless Jamie, slows down into the melancholic swells of “Nobody Needs to Know.” (Carin M. Ford’s sound editing and Nicole Maupin’s sound mixing expertly coax liveliness from the performers, by no means a given in a recorded musical.)

The production’s most clever aspect, however, is what defines it as a Covid-19 theater experience: the penned-in feel of where and how it’s shot. Filmed inside a New York apartment, “The Last Five Years” recalls the claustrophobic bubble of a couple who remain stuck — because of love or codependency or, maybe, a pandemic — in each other’s orbits until something gives.

Wall scrolls, tapestries, pictures, books and random Star Wars collectibles ( like a familiar green baby alien ) create the look of a fully lived-in space and also provide visual clues into the couple’s style and personality, details absent in the script (design is by Adam Honoré).

Webb’s inspired direction keeps the characters, and the paths of their relationship, in a tight embrace. Cathy and Jamie move around each other, often inhabiting the same space, but their interactions often feel distanced. Because the couple meets only once in the timeline, there’s a sense of pantomime to their other scenes together, reactions and physical proximity but no dialogue. It’s fitting because we know, watching, that what we’re seeing is only one character’s memory of an event.

At least Cathy and Jamie have beautiful accompanists to score their confrontations and declarations of love. Six musicians haunt the space like ghosts: Sitting on a couch, perched on a bed, they function as silent stand-ins for friends and roommates, before fading back into the background, or discreetly poke the fourth wall with a subtle smirk or nod at the singing characters.

Meanwhile, Brian Bon’s videography waltzes with the contours of the apartment, angling high and low and peeking around corners to create the illusion of a labyrinthine setting for relationship purgatory.

In purgatory, time doesn’t pass. The same may feel true during a pandemic. Two lovers stuck together but living in two different moments — one racing toward the future, one clinging to the past — that’s a story I’ve heard before.

But in this robust production, it’s a story impressively freed, not trapped, by its physical and creative limitations.

The Last Five Years

The show has been struck and our actors have taken their final bows.

Thanks for a great run.

An emotionally powerful and intimate musical sprinkled with humor, The Last Five Years tells the bittersweet tale of a brief marriage between two young artists. The storytelling is non-linear: Cathy, a struggling actor, starts her tale at the end of the marriage, working backwards through the timeline. Jamie, a literary prodigy, begins his at the onset of the relationship. The two narratives intersect on their wedding day before diverging again to arrive at the beginning, and end, of their five years together.

Opened in 2013, the Veterans Studio Theatre offers ample leg room and clear views of the stage from any of its 100 seats. Entrances and exits are centrally located and fully accessible for all.

The Last Five Years

Jason Robert-Brown’s award-winning musical The Last Five Years, returns to London’s West End for the first time in over ten years, after two sensational sell-out seasons at Southwark Playhouse, and an internationally streamed performance watched by audiences worldwide.

This emotionally powerful and poignant story of two New Yorkers who fall in and out of love over the course of five years, is underscored by a beautifully bittersweet score, featuring ‘I’m Still Hurting’, ‘Goodbye Until Tomorrow’ and ‘I Can Do Better Than That’.

Full of romance, wit and vivid storytelling, Jamie shares his story from the spark of their relationship’s giddy beginning, whilst Cathy’s side is told in reverse, from the end of their turbulent partnership. The two characters cross paths just once, as their stories collide during the middle of the show.

Jonathan O’Boyle’s bold new production sees the actor-musicians playing the piano, ukulele and guitar live throughout the show, adding an additional musical narrative to the story and a unique magic to Brown’s exquisite songs. The Last Five Years comes to the Garrick Theatre for a strictly limited 4-week season.

Great, great show!... They are amazing.

Delila has a fantastic voice and Edgey has a contagious energy.

I will not forget this concert.

This was just one of many concerts I have ever seen from The Last Internationale and I want to see many more in the future.

I just love The Last Internationale.

Dynamic, energising and a pretty lady with a great voice. Guitarist incredible. Fab show.

Pure rock sounds with some great highs. Had a really good time and would definitely recommend.

The venue may have been small, but the sound and the performance certainly weren’t. Huge energy from a band that clearly love to engage with their fans. Searing guitar, powerful drums and a deep bass line suck you in... but that voice. Wow. I go to a lot of gigs, but have never felt compelled to leave a review. If you get the chance to see them live - do it. This is what live music should be.

Taylor Swift is about to go back on tour: Here's what to expect on the Eras Tour in Paris

last five years international tour

After a two-month break, Taylor Swift is revitalizing her titanic Eras Tour in Paris, and fans believe there are changes coming to the show.

If you are wondering where she's playing, if there will be changes and how to score tickets, here's everything we know.

And if you're new to the Eras Tour party, you can get caught up on the first 83 shows here .

When does the Eras Tour start again?

Swift kicks off the European leg of her tour on Thursday, May 9, in Paris. She will perform Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, as well, in the City of Light.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

What are Taylor Swift's tour dates in Europe?

There are 69 shows left in the Eras Tour: 51 in Europe, nine in America and nine in Canada.

The European leg stretches from May all the way through a five-night stand at Wembley Stadium in London in mid-August.

See a complete list of international dates here .

After she wraps up in Europe, Swift will stop in Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis before wrapping up in Canada.

See the remaining U.S. dates here .

What is the Eras Tour set list?

The Eras Tour has featured a massive 45-song set list you can check out here . But speculation is swirling it won't look the same when Swift takes the stage in Paris.

Will Taylor Swift add 'The Tortured Poets Department' to her set list?

The tortured poet has been on hiatus keeping her stamina up by releasing a double album of 31 tracks. The 2-hours-and-2-minutes project broke a number of Billboard records as the superstar did zero press to promote it. Fans flocked to stores and streaming services to listen to all the songs from "Fortnight" to "The Manuscript."

Although the singer has not confirmed whether her 11th era album will be added to her Eras Tour set list, she did post a YouTube shorts video with two scenes that sent Easter egg decoders into a frenzy. In one of the shots, the singer is next to a railing where a "TTPD" logo appears to be (at 0:11). In the succeeding shot, her back-up dancers perform holding canes and wearing top hats, something they have not worn previously.

Swift's dancers and bandmates posted to their Instagram stories as they left for France last week. The singer did not appear at two media events with her boyfriend Travis Kelce: the Kentucky Derby and a Formula 1 race in Miami , Florida. Patrick Mahomes, Kelce's friend and Kansas City's quarterback, attended the car racing spectacular with his wife, Brittany.

Can I still get Eras Tour tickets?

Swift's show is completely sold out in Europe and North America. There are resale sites with tickets, but be wary of scams. The best way to avoid getting swindled is continuously checking links on Swift's website . There are some for resale on the sites verified by her camp.

Singapore was a hotbed for fans who traveled thousands of miles only to get turned away at the venue. In Tokyo and Australia, last-minute ticket drops happened a few days — without announcement — ahead of the shows.

Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis — the three U.S. cities Swift is visiting in the fall — have some of the heftiest price tags with Canada closely behind. In may be cheaper to travel to Warsaw, Poland, or Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Here's a list of cities with the cheapest resale tickets, according to travel website  Islands.com .

10. Vienna, Austria — total average cost: $1,089, safety score: 69.72

9. Cardiff, U.K. — total average cost: $1,061, safety score: 61.83

8. Lyon, France — total average cost: $1,047, safety score: 44.3

7. Lisbon, Portugal — total average cost: $1,028, safety score: 70.15

6. Munich, Germany — total average cost: $1,000, safety score: 78.88

5. Paris, France — total average cost: $971, safety score: 41.83

4. Stockholm, Sweden — total average cost: $935, safety score: 53.86

3. Hamburg, Germany — total average cost: $903, safety score: 57.51

2. Gelsenkirchen, Germany — total average cost: $749, safety score: 51.33

1. Warsaw, Poland — total average cost: $712, safety score: 72.98

Who are the opening acts?

Paramore launched the Eras Tour in Glendale, Arizona, in March 2023, so it's fitting the American rock band is opening the tour's second year. The act will open for Swift for 51 shows across Europe . The band was dubbed the 2024 Record Store Day global ambassador and surprised fans in Nashville the weekend following the release of "The Tortured Poets Department."

When the tour comes back to North America in October , Swift's opening act will be Gracie Abrams.

Where can I watch if I don't have tickets?

The Eras Tour is one of the first tours that has been followed, globally, by thousands of fans on digital platforms. Fans dedicate part of their concert experience to livestreaming as Swift performs. A few Swifties have learned how to host their own shows over social media including Tess Bohne , known as the livestream queen. Bohne goes live for (almost) every show pulling streams from Instagram and TikTok. When a livestream goes down, she fills the time with banter.

On YouTube, user @TaylorSwiftHockeyBro also livestreams the three-hour show, and on Twitch, @folkleric , is a host fans follow.

There is also an app, Swift Alert , that notifies fans who only want to watch certain eras like the acoustic, surprise set. The app sends out push alerts if there are any major announcements.

What secret songs are left?

For the past 83 shows, Swift has played an acoustic set she customizes at each stop with a guitar and piano performance. In 2024, the Eras Tour star added mashups of her songs for each stop. Here are the songs she has yet to perform:

  • "Taylor Swift" (debut album): "Mary's Song" and "A Perfectly Good Heart"
  • "Fearless": "The Way I Loved You," "Change," "Superstar," "We Were Happy," "That's When," "Don't You" and "Bye Bye Baby"
  • "Red": "Girl At Home," "Ronan," "Forever Winter" and "Run"
  • "1989": "Sweeter Than Fiction"
  • "Reputation": "I Did Something Bad"
  • "Lover": "London Boy," "Soon You'll Get Better" and "It's Nice to Have a Friend"
  • "Folklore": "Hoax"
  • "Evermore": "Happiness" and "Closure"
  • "Midnights": "Paris" and "Glitch"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department": all 31 tracks

Will Taylor Swift perform in 2025?

There have been many rumors that Swift will continue her show in 2025, but they are only rumors. Nothing has been announced for next year, and as of now, the tour will end in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Dec. 8.

PARIS (AP) — Chinese President Xi Jinping kicked off a three-country trip to Europe on Sunday with the continent divided over how to deal with Beijing’s growing power and the U.S.-China rivalry.

European carmakers are losing ground to subsidized Chinese electric vehicles . Diplomats fret about alleged Chinese spies in European capitals. And China’s continued defense trade with Russia worries anyone in Europe who supports war-ravaged Ukraine and fears that the Russian army won’t stop there.

But Europe and China have hefty economic ties — EU-China trade is estimated at 2.3 billion euros per day — and Xi appears determined to rebuild and deepen relations with European leaders after a prolonged absence prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Xi started Sunday in France, whose president wants Europe to have more economic and strategic independence from other world powers. Then the Chinese president heads to Serbia and Hungary, both seen as China-friendly and close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and recipients of substantial Chinese investment.

Xi’s trip will be closely watched in Washington for signs of diminishing European support for its key foreign policy goals. At the same time, there’s increasing uncertainty in Europe about future U.S. support for trans-Atlantic allies.

Xi was greeted at Paris’ Orly Airport by French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal — and by protests by groups demanding that France pressure China to respect Tibetan and Uyghur minority rights. Activists seeking a free Tibet attempted to unfurl a banner Saturday beneath the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and protested in the French capital around the same time as Xi’s plane landed.

After arriving, Xi said he hoped the visit would bring ‘’strategic convergence’’ between China and France, and that further developing their relations would contribute to ‘’stability and positive energy in an turbulent world,’' according to a text provided to reporters at the airport.

On Monday French President Emmanuel Macron will treat the Chinese leader to formal honors of a full state visit. They will also meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who is expected to join Macron in pushing for fairer trade policies and for China to use its leverage with Russia to push it toward ending the war in Ukraine.

The EU launched an investigation last fall into Chinese subsidies and could impose tariffs on electric vehicles exported from China.

China claims neutrality in the Ukraine conflict but has refused to call the full-blown Russian assault on its neighbor an invasion, and has been accused of bolstering Russia’s capacity to produce weapons.
