LIV Golf Invitational Series To Be Shown Live On YouTube

As part of the breakaway tour's "short-term" strategy, the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series will be free to watch on YouTube

In a bid to lower the average age of golf viewers, and as part of a short-term strategy to hit the ground running, the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series is to be broadcast live on YouTube and LIVGolf.com.

WATCH: LIV Golf Invitational Live YouTube Stream

The action begins at 2.15pm local time where the LIV Golf teams will be playing in a shot gun start across various tee times and groupings .

The announcement came during an explosive press conference in London where Greg Norman, CEO of LIV Golf Investments, said “we’ve all made mistakes” in reference to the Saudi regime's murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi back in 2018.

It’s little wonder then that news of any TV deals for the rebel tour slipped through the cracks. However, former Formula 1 commercial chief Sean Bratches, who has now resigned from the organisation , confirmed that YouTube will show the action that gets underway at the Centurion Club from June 9-11 as LIV Golf targets “broad reach out of the gate.”

“We've been speaking to broadcast outlets around the world for the better part of this year,” Bratches said. “We're entering the marketplace at a window of time where most of the time slots on either Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Friday, Saturday, Sunday predominantly are allocated. So our approach right now since we announced - and no one would do a deal until we actually had a product and announced - is we're doing a couple things.

“One is in our effort to lower the average age of the consumer of golf from 65. Our objective is to target an average age of 40. From day one we are going to be distributing the content globally on YouTube and on LIVGolf.com. We are going to have similes in China, which geoblocks those two platforms. We're talking to Snapchat, Facebook, Twitch and a few other media partners, and at the same time we're also engaged with the litany of broadcasters that are around the world.

“For this year, we would coexist with anybody that actually has the capacity to clear eight events for three days and make the economics work for them, but I think we are in this for the long haul. Our objective is to open the aperture to new audiences while being respectful to the incumbents. YouTube has 2.6 billion people that consume the product on a global basis, and over 120 million a month just in the United States.

“The changing behaviours of those viewers on these platforms is fascinating. In the world of connected televisions, with gaming consoles and other means to get content on the best available screen, and generally speaking the best available screen is the largest screen that you have, we feel very confident about that strategy in the short-term.

“But as we go forward and we actually have players, we have a proven conceit, we're going to be talking to partners in the marketplace about 2023 and beyond, and I think ultimately the complexion of our distribution from a commercial standpoint will look similar to what's in the marketplace today with the production elements that we discussed that we think are going to be unique, specific and surprise and delight golf fans, incumbent and future, going forward.”

Although the PGA Tour and reportedly the DP World Tour have blocked player release requests to tee it up at the Centurion Club for the breakaway circuit's curtain-raiser, Norman added he "might be sharing some names next week", before disclosing the full field list on May 27.

Andy took up the game at the age of seven and even harboured ambitions of a career in the professional ranks for a spell. That didn’t pan out, but he still enjoys his weekend golf at Royal Troon and holds a scratch handicap. As a side note, he's made five holes-in-one and could quite possibly be Retief Goosen’s biggest fan.

After causing a stir in the golf world with its inaugural season in 2022, LIV Golf is back for its 2023 season, which features more tournaments and, for the first time, a US TV network airing the tournament.

While the Saudi-backed LIV Golf has the stated mission of helping to grow the game with new audiences, billing itself as "golf, but louder," it is seen as a potential rival for the PGA Tour . That was covered a good bit in the Netflix reality series Full Swing .

But, aside from all the noise off the course, many golf fans just want to enjoy seeing some of the biggest names in the game compete. Here's everything you need to know about how to do that with this LIV Golf season.

How to watch LIV Golf

Watch liv golf in the us.

LIV Golf is taking a big step this season, as it has landed a US TV deal to air its tournaments on The CW. Last season, LIV Golf was only available to stream online.

All three days of LIV Golf tournaments, including exclusively on Fridays, are available to watch on The CW app, which is available for free with no login. Then, Saturday and Sunday rounds are available to watch on traditional TV on The CW. Most traditional pay-TV providers include The CW as part of their channel lineup, as do live streaming TV services like FuboTV , Hulu with Live TV and YouTube TV .

Cut the cord entirely? DAZN is the streaming home for LIV Golf. This is actually still the easiest way for many golf fans outside of the US to watch LIV Golf tournaments.

Watch LIV Golf in the UK

There is no specific TV home for LIV Golf in the UK at this time, but golf fans can still watch it by subscribing to DAZN. The sports streaming service carries all three rounds of the tournament for UK subsccribers.

Watch LIV Golf from anywhere

If you're keen to watch LIV Golf but you're somewhere the broadcasts aren't easily available, a potential solution to this issue is with a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

A VPN lets you change your IP address, enabling you to watch sporting events like LIV Golf and other shows and events that matter to you from other locations. Our favorite is  ExpressVPN (opens in new tab), which is the No. 1-rated VPN in the world right now according to our sister site, TechRadar.

LIV Golf format

While LIV Golf is seen as a rival of the PGA Tour, the two professional golf leagues are not exactly the same. There are a few unique things about the LIV Golf format that are handy to know if you are checking it out for the first time.

First, a LIV Golf tournament only consists of three days, instead of the usual four of a PGA Tour event. Over those three days, the players play 54 holes, one round (18 holes) a day.

Rather than staggered tee times throughout the day, LIV Golf features a shotgun start, meaning that all players go off at the same time on different holes.

There are also two ways to win a LIV Golf tournament. The first is the same as the PGA Tour, where a single player wins based on having the lowest cumulative score across all three rounds. However, there is also a team aspect to it.

All 48 players are divided into 12 teams of four. Team scores are generated by combining the scores of players in each round. The team with the lowest cumulative score wins.

The other big difference is that there are not cuts in LIV Golf; all 48 players play all the entire tournament.

LIV Golf FAQs

When is the next liv golf tournament.

The 2023 LIV Golf season tees off on Friday, February 24. The first event of the season takes place from the El Camaleón Golf Course in Mexico.

Will LIV Golf players be able to play in the Masters?

One of the big storylines from LIV Golf's inaugural season was the PGA Tour suspending or banning former members who left to join the Saudi-backed league. Right now, LIV Golf players do not receive world ranking points for playing in LIV tournaments, which can impact some of the players' ability to play in the four major golf tournaments, including the Masters.

The Masters announced in December 2022 that they would be inviting eligible LIV Golf members to play in the 2023 tournament. That includes 16 players: past Masters champions Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Charl Schwartzel and Bubba Watson; major winners from the last five years Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Cameron Smith; and top 50 world ranked players as of the end of the 2022 golf season, which includes Abraham Ancer, Talor Gooch, Jason Kokrak, Kevin Na, Joauqin Niemann, Louis Oosthuizen and Harold Varner III.

At this time it is unclear if LIV Golfers are going to be eligible for the other three majors in 2023: the PGA Championship, the US Open and the Open Championship.

Does LIV Golf have a cut?

No, there is no cut in LIV Golf tournaments. All 48 players that start the tournament play in all three rounds no matter what their score is.

This is one of the big differences between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, as documented numerous times in the Netflix docuseries Full Swing .

LIV Golf secures U.S. TV deal with The CW Network

1402343619

Chris Trotman/LIV Golf

Six months after holding its inaugural event and four weeks until kicking off its second season of competition, LIV Golf is set to air its tournaments for the first time on U.S. broadcast television.

LIV Golf officials announced on Thursday that they have secured a multiyear TV and streaming deal with The CW Network. Under the arrangement, the network will air live coverage of LIV tournaments on Saturdays and Sundays, with Friday action shown on The CW app.

The CW has more than 200 affiliates in the U.S. and is mostly known for airing syndicated programming.

“This is a momentous day for LIV Golf as this partnership is about more than just media rights. The CW will provide accessibility for our fans and maximum exposure for our athletes and partners as their reach includes more than 120 million households across the United States,” said Greg Norman, CEO and commissioner of LIV Golf, in a press release. “We’re very proud to note how consequential it is that a league that has only existed for one year has secured a full broadcast deal in its debut full league season.”

No terms of the deal were released. Multiple published reports state that rather than The CW paying a rights fee to LIV, they will share ad revenue generated from the broadcasts. LIV Golf is also believed to be paying for productions fees, according to ESPN and SI.

Word that LIV and The CW were close to a deal surfaced in recent days. The Palm Beach Post noted that LIV Golf commentator David Feherty told an audience at a stand-up special last week that the Saudi-backed circuit would be broadcast on the channel. "Have you heard of CW?" Feherty said after his show last Thursday, according to the Post. "I might get fired for this, but … " hinting a deal could be announced this week. Sports Business Journal had also reported that the arrangement looked to be close to official.

During its inaugural season in 2022, LIV Golf could only be viewed in the U.S. on YouTube or LIV Golf’s website. Golf Digest reported last year that the valuations of LIV Golf franchises, and the long-term viability of the league, hinged on securing a broadcast deal. But nearly all of the major television subsidiaries in the U.S. showed little to no interest in LIV Golf in its first few months, sources told Golf Digest.

The one wildcard was the FOX Corporation due to its ties with the fledgling league. FOX founder and media tycoon Rubert Murdoch has a personal relationship with LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman; the two attempted to create a “World Golf Tour'' in the mid-1990s, with Murdoch’s FOX Sports securing the TV rights. In January 2022, LIV Golf hired former FOX Sports President David Hill to help with production, and the right-leaning FOX News had a heavy presence at LIV Golf’s third event held at former President Trump’s Bedminster property. In the fall, reports emerged FOX Sports was in discussions with LIV Golf.

RELATED: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of LIV Golf

However, multiple sources told Golf Digest talks broke down over rights fees, as LIV Golf viewed a media deal as a revenue generator while FOX Sports insisted on being paid for showing the product similar to an ad-buy.

“Our new multi-year partnership with The CW will unlock our ability to serve both core golf fans and to reach the casual sports and entertainment viewer as part of our mission to grow the sport,” said Will Staeger, chief media officer of LIV Golf. “Our innovative product attracts a younger viewership demographic to the table than the traditional golf fan, and we’re thrilled to be part of The CW’s growth into its new era of sports programming featuring the biggest stars in golf and our industry-leading storytelling and format.”

LIV’s on-air announcing team will carry over from the end of 2022 with Arlo White doing play-by-play alongside analysts David Feherty and Jerry Foltz. Dom Boulet, Su-Ann Heng and Troy Mullins will providing on-course coverage.

LIV Golf's second season will begin Feb. 24 at Mayakoba, with both individual and team competitions similar to the inaugural season returning. The entire schedule and rosters have yet to be released, but announcements on both could be coming this week.

LIV Golf Has Marquee Names and Giant Purses. So Why No TV Deal?

The human rights record of its funder, Saudi Arabia, may be the least of the new tour’s challenges when it comes to getting on American television.

liv tour youtube tv

By Kevin Draper

For the Saudi-backed upstart LIV Golf tour, the strategy for luring top golfers like Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson away from the prestige and stability of the PGA Tour was simple: Offer cash, and lots of it.

The arrival of the new tour and the defection of PGA Tour stars were major disruptions in what has been a stable and even staid sport. But when the first LIV event was finally held outside London last weekend after months of anticipation, it was not shown on television in the United States. And it’s unlikely that any American network will be broadcasting LIV events anytime soon.

The reason boils down to this: The networks are happy airing the PGA Tour.

“We are positioned as the home of golf in this country,” said Pete Bevacqua, the chairman of the NBC Sports, which shows by far the most golf in the United States. “We are not only satisfied where we are, but unbelievably pleased where we are.”

Some golfers couldn’t resist the pull of the new tour, whose events are shorter than the PGA Tour’s (three days instead of four) and offer huge payouts, with individual winners receiving $4 million and the members of winning teams sharing $3 million, far more than most PGA Tour events. Even last-place finishers get $120,000; PGA Tour players who don’t make the cut after two rounds get nothing.

But the LIV tour got nowhere with those who might have aired its events in the United States. Representatives for LIV Golf spoke with most American broadcasters, but did not have substantive discussions about a media rights agreement with any of them, according to people familiar with those discussions. LIV broached the idea of buying time to show the London tournament on Fox — an inversion of the normal business relationship, where the media company pays the sports organization to show its event — but discussions did not go far.

In the end, the London tournament was not on American broadcast TV or popular sports streaming platforms such as Peacock and ESPN+. Instead, golf fans could watch it on the streaming service DAZN, YouTube, Facebook or LIV Golf’s website, without commercials.

Limited viewership numbers suggest not many of them did. The final round of the London event attracted an average of 68,761 viewers on YouTube and fewer than 5,000 on Facebook, according to Apex Marketing, a sports and entertainment analytics firm. On the same weekend, 812,000 viewers watched the final round of the PGA Tour’s Canadian Open on Golf Channel, and 2.78 million watched when coverage switched over to CBS.

The absence of a media rights agreement would normally threaten the survival of a new sports league. But LIV Golf is not a commercial entity with a profit imperative. It is bankrolled by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund and part of a larger effort by the kingdom to improve its image around the world. Players who have joined the LIV tour have been accused of helping to “sportswash” Saudi Arabia’s record of human rights abuses, including the killing of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

LIV did not respond to a request for comment.

But NBC and other broadcast networks have a long list of reasons other than reputational damage to steer clear of the new venture.

LIV’s main barrier to entry in the United States is that most major media companies are deeply invested in the success of its competitor, the PGA Tour. NBC, CBS and ESPN are collectively in the first year of a nine-year, $6 billion-plus agreement to show the PGA Tour in the United States, while Warner Bros. Discovery (which owns TNT and TBS) is paying the PGA Tour $2 billion to show the tour worldwide.

The media companies are not contractually restricted from showing LIV, according to the people familiar with the deals, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private agreements. But they believe that doing so would draw attention away from the tour on which they are spending billions.

Fox, which has a history of risk-taking in sports (it is currently investing in spring football), might seem like a good candidate to team up with LIV, but Fox does not televise any golf, and that is by design. The network had the rights to broadcast the U.S. Open through 2026, but paid money to give up those rights to NBC .

Even if networks wanted to take a chance on LIV Golf, the logistical challenges would be significant. Golf monopolizes entire weekends throughout the year and is more expensive to produce than arena- and stadium-based sports. (Golf presents a particularly difficult hurdle for Fox, which rarely puts sports on its streaming service, Tubi, meaning it is difficult to show golf when schedules collide.)

LIV Golf also did not have any stars on board until recently, and it is not clear whether it will attract enough top golfers to make its events attractive to fans. Questions about the tour’s backing have been uncomfortable for those who have joined.

“I would ask any player who has left or any player who would ever consider leaving, ‘Have you ever had to apologize for being a member of the PGA Tour?’” Jay Monahan, the commissioner of the PGA Tour, said in a televised interview Sunday.

Players who have signed contracts with LIV have been booted from the PGA Tour, though that could soon become the subject of litigation. Players have also been dropped by sponsors, either because of the association with Saudi Arabia or because companies don’t want to support golfers competing on a tour few are watching.

Still, many of those involved in the PGA Tour media deal acknowledged that interest in the PGA Tour would decrease if LIV lured away more top golfers. They believe the PGA Tour’s appeal lies in the world’s best golfers competing against one another every weekend, and LIV is directly threatening that.

LIV’s future may depend partly on whether LIV players are allowed to play in the four major golf tournaments — none of which is run by the PGA Tour. Augusta National Golf Club hosts the Masters; the United States Golf Association stages the U.S. Open; the Professional Golfers Association of America runs the P.G.A. Championship; and the R & A puts on the British Open.

If allowed to compete in majors, LIV golfers could earn huge paydays on the less-taxing LIV tour while continuing to play in the legacy-defining events in front of millions of fans.

“Majors are extremely important to professional golfers, and they will be a key variable whether this is successful or not,” said David Levy, a former president of Turner Sports who created the Match, a high-stakes golf exhibition.

This year’s third major, the U.S. Open, is at the Country Club in Brookline, Mass., this weekend, and LIV golfers are present. The U.S.G.A., which organizes the tournament, said in a carefully worded statement last week that any golfer who had qualified would be allowed to compete. But the U.S.G.A. noted that its decision “should not be construed as the U.S.G.A. supporting an alternative organizing entity,” and on Wednesday, the organization’s chief executive, Mike Whan, said that he could foresee a day when players were denied entry to the U.S. Open based on which tour they came from.

The other majors have not said whether they will bar LIV golfers from their events. Nor have these tournaments said whether they will continue to extend lifetime invitations to players who have won them. (Mickelson has exemptions from the Masters and P.G.A. Championship for life, for instance.) Decisions are expected this fall and winter as plans are solidified for tournaments in 2023.

A sometimes overlooked golf body, the Official World Golf Ranking, is also expected to have influence. The organization bestows ranking points on golfers based on their performance, and tournaments use those rankings to determine eligibility. Currently, LIV golfers do not receive ranking points, meaning they will inevitably fall in the world rankings and lose their eligibility to compete in the majors.

LIV has said it will submit an application to have its events ranked. That application will be considered by the governing board of the Official World Golf Ranking, whose chairman is Peter Dawson, an English former professional golfer. The board also includes representatives from each of the four majors, along with the PGA Tour, the European Tour and the International Federation of PGA Tours, an umbrella organization of professional golf tours.

While the PGA Tour will almost certainly vote against LIV’s application, it is less certain how the other tours will vote. And even if they also vote no, if representatives from the four majors all vote to allow LIV’s golfers to accrue ranking points — and therefore signal they are comfortable with LIV golfers competing in their events — LIV Golf might just succeed in attracting more golfers.

YouTube golf takes full advantage while PGA Tour's LIV Golf feud continues

The world of social media and YouTube has made significant inroads into the realm of sports, including golf .

The Myrtle Beach Classic (MBC) in South Carolina has made PGA Tour history this week by offering a spot to a YouTube golfer - albeit a very good one.

George Bryan is the man in question and has gained fame through his Bryan Bros YouTube channel. His younger brother Wesley - who makes up the other half of the channel - is a a seasoned PGA Tour pro in his own right with a win at the 2017 RBC Heritage, also will also be participating in this week's event.

George was given the opportunity to compete at the Myrtle Beach Classic through a unique pre-event qualifier held by the tournament. "The Q at Myrtle Beach" saw eight YouTube golfers and eight pros vying for a spot in this week's event.

Although leading by two shots with one hole left, Bryan ended up in a playoff with Korn Ferry Tour veteran Matt Atkins after bogeying the 18th hole. Atkins' experience ultimately then helped him go on to secure the PGA Tour spot.

Despite the setback, the YouTube star was given a special invitation to compete by Myrtle Beach officials, following his impressive performance in the qualifier. The decision to offer a spot on the PGA Tour to YouTube golfers raised some eyebrows among traditionalists of the sport.

Countless dedicated professionals strive each week to earn starts on the likes of the Korn Ferry Tour and Challenge Tour, with a spot at a PGA Tour event often the ultimate prize. Therefore, the fact that this opportunity was given to a group of individuals who play the game primarily to create online content did not sit well with many.

However, for the Myrtle Beach Classic, it was a stroke of marketing brilliance. The tournament, which is taking place this week, is overshadowed by the Wells Fargo Championship, with the $20 million Signature Event taking place simultaneously alongside the South Carolina tournament.

The MBC needed a alternative way to draw attention to their event, and what better method than tapping into the YouTube market? The YouTube golf scene has seen a rapid rise recently, with personalities like Rick Shiels (2.79m subscribers) and Good Good (1.5 million) leading the pack, even boasting more followers than the PGA Tour's official channel.

The decline in professional golf viewership has been no secret, with a significant drop noted at this year's Masters. The final round of the prestigious event saw a 20 percent decrease from the previous year. One major factor seems to be the ongoing feud between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.

The financial war between these two rival tours has taken the spotlight, becoming a monotonous spectacle for the average golf fan watching from their sofa. However, when it comes to YouTube golf and its viewership, the numbers are on an upward trend, with channels gaining more popularity than ever.

Could it be that fans, fed up with the PGA Tour-LIV conflict, are now turning to the enjoyable and laid-back nature of YouTube golf matches? While it remains to be seen, the numbers do seem to align. Among the eight YouTube stars vying for a Myrtle Beach was Manchester-based Peter Finch.

Follow the Mirror US on Google News to stay up to date with all the latest news, sport and entertainment stories.

He has become one of the most popular figures in the YouTube golf scene, boasting over 633,000 subscribers. Following his PGA Tour attempt, Finch opened up to Mirror Sports and shared his belief that the decision by Myrtle Beach to host the qualifier is further proof of modern fans' immense interest in golf on YouTube.

"What is shows more than anything is where people's attention is," he said. "If eight years ago, if Myrtle Beach would have said 'We're going to get people who create content online to qualify for a PGA Tour event'... they would have been laughed at. It is a sign of where people are paying attention to golf."

He mentioned the declining viewership of the PGA Tour and the booming online content, suspecting a connection between the two trends. "There was a soundbite on how people who watch professional golf and the viewership has decline by about 20 percent, and what we have found over the past year is our figures have increased by about the same," Finch said.

"That could be a complete coincidence, or that could be a sign that people are tuning out of professional golf and watching more online content because I think the connection between the players and the fans has eroded a little bit. The way LIV has taken a lot of the best players to their tour - you are a lot less likely to tune in if your favourite player isn't in contention. And that has a knock on effect."

Finch didn't manage to secure a spot in this week's tournament, but he still put up a good fight, finishing four shots behind the leaders with a one-over 73. His fellow content creator Bryan, however, will have the opportunity to make history. With his YouTube background, he has already proven that he can compete.

The vlogger is making his second PGA Tour start, having competed in last year's Butterfield Bermuda Championship, where he made the cut and finished tied for 69th, and a similar performance this week would undoubtedly further validate the continuous growth of YouTube golf.

AP PGA Championship story:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The attention starts building weeks, if not months, ahead of the one major keeping Rory McIlroy from the career Grand Slam, the most elite club in golf. It’s like that every year, and it doesn’t make it any easier when he gets to the Masters.

Jordan Spieth should be able to appreciate the feeling. Except that he really doesn’t.

Now that McIlroy missed again at the Masters — his 10th straight attempt at getting the final leg — Spieth is next up with an opportunity to become only the sixth player in history to capture all four professional majors.

It feels like an afterthought going into the PGA Championship.

Scottie Scheffler tries to extend his dominance with a second straight major. Brooks Koepka is the defending champion and coming off a LIV Golf win in Singapore. Jon Rahm turned in a dud at the Masters and curious eyes will want to see at Valhalla if that was an aberration.

Oh yes, and Spieth goes for the career Grand Slam, a feat achieved only by Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen.

“These things, like winning a career Grand Slam, they happen kind of when I think there’s less focus and less of a spotlight on him,” said Jim Nantz of CBS, who has covered every PGA Championship since 1991. “And I think Jordan goes into this week without a whole lot of discussion about that possibility coming up at Valhalla.

“So maybe it is favorable in that sense mentally.”

Spieth isn’t surprised the attention is not that high, certainly not at the level McIlroy has faced the last decade each time he heads to Augusta National.

One reason is his game, which has not been great. Spieth has gone just over two years since he last won a tournament and has had only a few close calls since then. He comes into the PGA Championship having missed the cut in four of his last five tournaments that had a 36-hole cut.

“He’s got more accolades,” Spieth said about the Slam hype between him and McIlroy. “He’s been a better player over his career. Maybe that creates a little noise. He’s been a bit more vocal about it himself, so maybe that makes a little bit more difference.”

The other reason is the Masters, the only major held on the same course every year.

Sarazen is the only player with the career Grand Slam who completed it at Augusta National. But that was in 1935, long before the Masters was considered a major and 25 years before Arnold Palmer first brought a professional slam into the golf conversation.

McIlroy threw away a chance in 2011 when he lost a four-shot lead in the final round at the Masters. He played in the final group with Patrick Reed in 2018 and didn’t get it done. Reminders are everywhere when he returns.

That isn’t the case for Spieth. He goes to Quail Hollow one year, Bellerive the next. He has had seven cracks at getting the missing piece of the Grand Slam on seven courses.

“For me, it’s like the PGA Championship feels decently similar to a number of tournaments we play,” Spieth said. “I don’t mean that in a bad way. It’s played on some of the biggest, best golf courses. But the identity is not the same as the other three. In my mind, you don’t need to find a different way to win, versus guys who don’t have some of the other ones.

“We play a few tournaments a year that could be PGA Championships if you change the branding and the grandstands.”

Only two other players lacked only the PGA Championship for the career slam — Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson.

Jack Nicklaus referenced them last month when speaking of McIlroy’s chances at Augusta.

“Is Tom Watson good enough to win the Grand Slam? Absolutely. Was Arnold Palmer good enough to win the Grand Slam? Absolutely,” Nicklaus said.

He felt the same way about McIlroy before adding, “But they have got to do it.”

Spieth is 30 and would seem to have time on his side — but not history. Sarazen, Hogan and Woods won the final leg in their first attempt. Woods did it in the most spectacular fashion, winning the U.S. Open by 15 shots and a month later the British Open by eight. He was 24.

Player (1965 U.S. Open) and Nicklaus (1966 British Open) completed the Grand Slam on their third attempt after they had captured the third leg.

McIlroy already has had 10 cracks at the Masters since he picked up the third leg. Spieth has had seven tries at the PGA Championship since winning the third leg at Royal Birkdale in 2017.

He said it doesn’t weigh on him, at least not lately.

“I remember thinking about it in ‘17 because it was right after the Open and I was playing so well,” Spieth said. He tied for 28th at Quail Hollow.

He also said he gave the Grand Slam some thought in 2019 at Bethpage Black when he was in the final group going into the weekend with Brooks Koepka. That wasn’t really a fair fight. Koepka set the 36-hole record for majors (128), a record seven shots ahead of Spieth.

“But I don’t feel like it will build up over time, not like people talk about Rory’s building up over time,” Spieth said.

More focus is on a nagging injury to his left wrist that first surfaced right before the PGA Championship last year at Oak Hill. Spieth is trying to manage it. He also is spending more time than he imagined on the phone as part of the PGA Tour Enterprises board trying to figure out the best way forward with the Saudis.

Justin Thomas has two PGA titles — what Spieth wouldn’t do for one — and is surprised why his longtime friend doesn’t get much attention as he pursues the final leg.

“It should be the same amount of attention — you could say more because he’s younger than Rory,” Thomas said. “But that also could be a good thing. Going in under the radar is never bad.”

The second major of year sees Koepka line up against 15 past PGA Championship winners including Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods as well as world No. 1 and recent Masters winner Scottie Scheffler.

Koepka is something of a PGA Championship specialist, after back-to back triumphs in 2018 and 2019 as well as last year's win, and comes into this year's tournament off the back of an impressive victory at last week's LIV event in Singapore.

How to watch the the PGA Championship 2024 online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the tournament locally, you may need a different way to watch -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the tournament. So if your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, nonblackout area. Most VPNs, like our Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Quick tips for streaming the PGA Championship 2024 using a VPN

  • With four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
  • If you're having trouble getting the tournament after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend  Brave .
