What other guests say about our tours and locals

Experiencing local with Carlos

"Doing the food tour with Carlos made our stay in Tokyo very special. Carlos was very knowledgeable about the food and how it is prepared. He also gave a perspective what life is like for the locals. Carlos was easy to talk to and helped us navigate many of the Japanese customs. The tour was way more than just a food tour, I would certainly recommend Carlos as a local guide. "

A friendly and fun intro to Tokyo

"We really enjoyed our tour with Gulay and really felt we were being shown around by a friend. She gave us a tour of the Shibuya area of the city, taking us across famous Shibuya scramble crossing and introducing the kids to the crazy capsule dispenser shops - much to their delight! Gulay gave us some great tips for restaurants and also showed us the best place to buy our Shinkansen tickets. She also gave us some really helpful advice both before and after the tour. "

Great Start to Tokyo!

"My teenage son and I spent our first afternoon in Tokyo with Gulay and we couldn't have been happier. She was lovely and personable and within minutes of being with her, she gave us a tip that made our whole trip so much easier. She answered our questions, shared interesting information and showed us newbie tricks to help navigate the city. She also gave us a recommendation for an area we wouldn't have found on our own (which has been our favorite so far!). Thank you, Gulay, for a wonderful and helpful start to our trip. I just wish we could have have had more time with you!"

Guide very nice, kind and organized a tour very tailored to my needs. Amazing

A day with Shintaro is a day spent with a long-time friend. Before the tour began he suggested common places to visit to tailor the tour to our interests. Instead of visiting the typical tourist areas, we requested to see the city from his perspective as someone who knows it intimately. Great decision. Shintaro guided us down the back streets, where we discussed the similarities and differences between New York and Tokyo and how Tokyo has grown over time. He thoughtfully answered the myriad questions that came to mind and engaged us with his own. We stopped at a busy coffee shop and experienced street-side food. For dinner, Shintaro took us to an off-the-path authentic Tokyo restaurant and ordered the best items on the menu. We talked a bit about music, and he told us about a party he was headed to afterward and invited us to join him. Once the tour ended, we didn't just part ways. Shintaro took us to an underground techno music scene, where he introduced us and showed us around. It was a unique experience that only a local guide with his background can provide. What an incredible day.

Great casual tour with Robert. He showed us great walking streets and interesting tid bits about Tokyo. We really enjoyed our time and you will too!

Frequently asked questions.

Tokyo – where do we even start? This city is like a multi-layered cake, and each slice offers a different flavor. One moment you're standing amidst the ultra-modern skyscrapers, neon lights reflecting off the glass, and the next, you're on one of our Tokyo walking tours , strolling through quiet alleyways where tradition reigns supreme. It's a city where ancient temples sit comfortably next to tech hubs and where kimono-clad folks walk side-by-side with edgy fashionistas.

Now, let's be real. One of the things to know before visiting Tokyo is that to even begin uncovering its layers, you'd need at least 3 days. And that's just scratching the surface. With so much depth and diversity, booking one of our Tokyo tours isn't just a good idea – it's a no-brainer. Without the right Tokyo tour guide services , you might walk past a hidden gem or miss out on a street food stall that serves the best takoyaki you'd ever taste. Tokyo has these nuances, these little secrets, that make it so darn unique and addictive. Trust me, there's no better way to ensure you catch all those subtle details that make Tokyo, well, Tokyo.

First off, our Tokyo private tours , are all about keeping it real. There's a lot of chatter about "authentic experiences" and "hidden gems", but when it comes to tours Tokyo often presents, not everyone truly delivers. We stand out because we're committed to giving you that genuine Tokyo vibe. How? By ditching the script! Every single tour is tailored to your whims and wishes. Whether you're on a mission to find the most mouth-watering ramen or you're drawn to Tokyo's eclectic underground art scene, your City Unscripted tour guide in Tokyo has got you covered.

Here's the cherry on top: our local guides. Picture this – roaming the streets of Tokyo with a friend, a companion who's genuinely in love with their city and excited to show you their cherished spots without any ulterior motives. This isn’t just any Tokyo experience, it’s the City Unscripted experience. We pair you up with a Tokyo tour guide who totally gets what you're about. No formal lectures or tedious explanations – think of it more like two buddies on a Tokyo adventure.

Speaking of recommendations, we don't do backroom deals with cafes or restaurants. When your guide points you to a tucked-away café or a lively izakaya, it’s from the heart – not a business arrangement. And if you're wondering about the best area to stay in Tokyo for first-time visit , our guides have insights on that too, ensuring you get the most from your Tokyo adventure right from the start!

Tokyo is vast, intricate, and brimming with layers waiting to be explored. Navigating it with someone who's got the insider knowledge? Priceless.

Have you ever tried to find your way out of a labyrinth? Well, Tokyo can sometimes feel like one, especially if you’re navigating it on your own. Let’s paint a picture here: Shinjuku Station, for instance, boasts over 200 exits. Yes, you read that right! And that’s just one station in this vast metropolis.

Now, think about the countless amazing restaurants and experiences that Tokyo offers, many of which are located above ground or tucked in the coziest corners of buildings. If you can't read Japanese, there's a chance you'll stroll right past a culinary experience of a lifetime or a shop that sells just the thing you've been dreaming of. And while Tokyo is an international hub, English isn't as widely spoken as you might think, which can sometimes lead to delightful misadventures or, let’s be real, missed opportunities.

The list of things to do in Tokyo can be overwhelming. From street food in Tokyo that promises to tantalize your taste buds, cultural dives into its rich history, to the dazzling array of things to do in Tokyo at night , trying to distill which experiences to prioritize can take longer than your actual trip!

This is where personal tours in Tokyo , like the ones City Unscripted offers, truly shine. Imagine having a friend in Tokyo – someone who knows the ins and outs, the nooks and crannies, the little practicalities that can transform your trip from good to unforgettable. Whether it's guiding you to the best food tour Tokyo has to offer, offering tips on navigating the city, or simply being there to translate a menu, that personal touch can be a game-changer.

Tokyo is vast, vibrant, and brimming with hidden gems. With our private tours in Tokyo , you're not just another tourist – you're an explorer with a local buddy by your side.

With so many reasons to visit Tokyo , you're in for a treat. The city bursts with unique Tokyo experiences , and choosing the best area to stay in Tokyo for a first-time visit can be a game-changer for your trip. But let's tackle the big question: how long should you really spend to capture the city's heart?

If you only have 24 hours in Tokyo , this metropolis will dazzle you! It's like grabbing a quick bite of sushi from the city's famed Tsukiji Outer Market - delicious, but leaving you wanting a fuller feast. Within a day, you'll dance to Tokyo's electrifying rhythm, hit some iconic sights, and if you're lucky, stumble upon a few of those elusive Tokyo hidden gems . But trust me, to dive deep into Tokyo’s multi-faceted soul, you're merely at the starting line.

Got a luxurious 3 days up your sleeve? Now you're in business. With 3 days in Tokyo , tours we recommend will have you navigating between the city's iconic neon-lit streets and serene temple grounds. Dive deep into the juxtaposition of Tokyo's bustling city life and its tranquil pockets of heritage. And for a more grounded experience? Try one of the walking tours Tokyo has to offer. They'll take you through charming backstreets and hidden alleyways, letting you savor the city's pulse. Three days give you a richer palette to paint your Tokyo memories.

Navigating the landscape of Tokyo daily tours can feel as complex as traversing the city's winding streets. So, let's break it down in terms of dollars and sense.

Starting with group tours: they are, without a doubt, the budget-friendly choice. Think of them as the conveyor belt sushi of the tour world – efficient, effective, and they get the job done. Typically, you might spend around $20 to $50 for these. While they'll follow the well-trodden tourist paths and might lack that genuine 'Tokyo feel,' they're an excellent pick if you're looking to save some yen and enjoy meeting fellow travelers.

Then there's the upscale offering of private tours Tokyo provides. Prices here can vary considerably, usually starting from $100 and going upwards to $500 or even more. Remember, not all private tours are crafted equally. Many follow a standard itinerary, offering just a sprinkle of flexibility. But if you're yearning for an authentic experience, then a Tokyo walking tour with us might just be your cup of matcha.

Wondering how much is a tour guide in Tokyo ? Our tours are competitively priced at around $140 per person for a half-day tour, but what sets us apart is the value we deliver. It's more about the experience than the price tag. Our Tokyo tours by locals are fully tailored to your wishes. With City Unscripted, you're not just booking a tour; you're securing an experience, a day out with a new friend passionate about their city. Our hosts love what they do, which means they’re being their authentic selves, giving you a genuine glimpse of Tokyo. There are no preset Tokyo tour packages  here; it's all about crafting moments you'll treasure.

To truly experience Tokyo's heartbeat, whether it's the serene spring in Tokyo or the vibrant energy of Tokyo in summer , you need to walk its streets with someone who calls it home. That's where having a City Unscripted tour guide in Tokyo steps in.

Sure, you could hop on a typical tourist trail, but imagine indulging in unique Tokyo food tours , tailored to you and led by someone who's known these flavors since childhood. Or experiencing Tokyo in winter with a guide who knows the coziest spots to warm up? Our local guides adore their city, and there's nothing they love more than sharing its secrets, stories, and soul with you.

Going local isn't just about getting a richer, more authentic experience though. It's also a more sustainable way to explore. By steering clear of those jam-packed tourist spots, you're helping to reduce the wear and tear on Tokyo's most popular sights. Plus, there's the added bonus of supporting local businesses when your guide takes you to their favorite hole-in-the-wall eatery or quaint boutique shop.

With City Unscripted, you're not just getting any old Tokyo day tours – you're getting a friend in the city. Someone who's eager to let you in on the city's best-kept secrets, ensuring you connect deeply with the heart, culture, and pulse of this incredible metropolis. Our passion? Helping you discover new facets of the world, inspiring that lifelong wanderlust, and ensuring every trip, be it during the cherry blossoms of spring or the balmy nights of summer, is filled with authentic, immersive moments that'll stay with you forever.

If you're hopping on a bus or settling into a private car to tour Tokyo, you're likely missing out on half of the city's magic. There's a richness to Tokyo that's best felt up close, where the intricate details, unexpected smells, and ambient sounds become part of your journey. Every hidden alley, every sidewalk vendor, and every burst of laughter from a nearby cafe adds to the vibrant tapestry of the city. Those are the moments and memories you simply can't catch from behind a window.

While Tokyo bicycle tours have their charm and offer a faster pace to cover more ground, nothing beats the authenticity and depth of discovery that walking provides. On foot, it's easier to pivot into a curious-looking shop, engage with locals, or spontaneously decide to try that street food that smells too good to pass up.

When you're walking, you're in the prime position to discover hidden gems Tokyo has sprinkled all over. And with the best private tour guide Tokyo can offer, every step becomes an adventure, every corner turned into a story. Plus, let's not forget the green badge you get for choosing the sustainable path.

No two travelers are alike, and Tokyo, with its myriad of experiences, caters to every kind of wanderlust. Whether you’re a foodie itching to slurp authentic ramen or a history buff eager to walk ancient paths, Tokyo’s got a tour just for you. And if you can't make up your mind, there's always the option of Tokyo multi day tours to delve even deeper. And the beauty? Each tour feels like it's been handpicked just for you.

Have you ever been on a food tour where you feel like just another number in a line, moving from one pre-arranged spot to the next? We get it, and we've got something different in mind. At City Unscripted, we truly believe that food isn't just about flavors on a plate - it's an intimate gateway into the very heart of a culture. And what better way to dive deep into Tokyo's culinary scene than with tours with Tokyo locals?

While many might steer you towards places they've got deals with, dishing out the same fare to everyone, that's not how we deliver our food tours in Tokyo . Why? Because authenticity is our jam. There are no backroom deals with cafes in Tokyo  and no pre-set menus. Our hosts are the real heroes. They'll take you to their cherished spots, the very places they'd share with their own friends and family.

Got a penchant for something spicy? Or maybe a sweet tooth that's guiding your adventure? No worries! Our experiences aren't generic. They're tailored to your taste buds, allowing you to savor the best of Tokyo's gastronomic offerings just the way you like it.

So, if genuine connections over commercial arrangements are what you're after, you're in the right place.

Getting ready for a trip to Tokyo? We're genuinely excited for you! Tokyo is a thrilling blend of the traditional and the avant-garde, and with our tours in Tokyo , you're set for an authentic experience. Before we hit the ground running, there's just a tiny bit of prep to ensure your adventure is as personalized as it gets.

First things first: the questionnaire. We know, filling out forms isn't the most exciting part of travel planning, but trust us on this. The more you share about your interests, likes, and curiosities, the better equipped your host will be to tailor the tour to your whims.

Even if you’ve skimmed through a Tokyo tour guidebook or have had a brief chat with someone who offers Tokyo English-speaking tour guide service s, your experience with us is meant to be distinct. We’re not just about showing you the sights; we're about connecting you with Tokyo in a way that feels right for you.

Beyond the questionnaire, it might be handy to get familiar with Tokyo’s transport system, maybe pick up a few basic Japanese phrases (a simple "arigatou" goes a long way!), and check the seasonal weather forecast so you can pack accordingly.

With all that said, gear up for one of the best Tokyo tours with City Unscripted. Tokyo awaits, and we can't wait to explore it with you!

Kahoko's Tokyo "As you like" One Day Tour

“ Very nice experience around mangas and gaming ”

We spent a wonderful day with Kahoko. I was with two boys of 10 and 12 who love mangas, pokemon, games etc. The day was for them and asked Kahoko to adjust the plan accordingly. She organised a very nice tour around mangas and gaming.. the kids enjoyed it so much! Thanks a lot Koki for this wonderful day!

Rim S.

Thank you very much for the kind review ! I was very impressed with your love and patience for your children as a mother of three kids. That reminds me of those tough but enjoyable days myself. My only regret was that I should have studied French harder. Thank you again and take care!

“ Excellent! Highly recommended! ”

Satoru

Japan’s capital is like no other city in the world. Manhattan’s bright lights with an edgier culture, the chaos of Marrakech with an added chicness, and the prestige of Paris with a tranquil Asian flair; Tokyo is absolutely dazzling. In a city where sake-driven karaoke and Zen meditation exist side by side on neon-lit streets, it’s hard to imagine a personality Tokyo doesn’t deliver to. Colorful confectioneries sweeten up any visit, while the world’s largest fish market provides the city with picture-perfect sushi. But Tokyo’s beauty doesn’t end with its’ gastro delights; progressive clothing boutiques and extravagant electronic stores entice sidewalk travelers with their innovatively modern designs. Your helpful Tokyo tour guide will remind you that the city’s advanced public transportation system covers 100 routes throughout the metropolis, taking visitors to its’ oddly artsy red light district and transporting them back to the Imperial Palace’s majestic castle, all in a day. Fear not for the other 364 days- there’s plenty of Tokyo’s treasures to keep any traveller happy.

An in-depth discovery of Tokyo

For many travelers in Japan, Tokyo is a destination that should not be missed, and they are right!

Although it would be a shame to limit the visit to the Japanese capital, Tokyo is definitely a must-see in the archipelago.

local tour in tokyo

Tokyo is a humongous megalopolis and the biggest city in the world, with 37 million inhabitants, that will impress Japan’s first-timers.

As a matter of fact, Tokyo is such a large city that it is also a prefecture. And it does not even take into account the encompassing “Greater Tokyo” and its numerous neighboring suburbs. Discover Japan’s capital and its transportation network smoothly, in a way you may not have imagined!

A dedicated guide

The tour you booked is completely private. You will not share your guide with unknown people, for more comfort and privacy.

You guide is dedicated to you or your group (couple, friends, family, etc.) and will offer suggestions during the tour according to the time of the year, the weather and your pace.

Know Japan beyond clichés.

Discover cities under a new approach, closer to their reality; Explore places hidden to tourists, good and sometimes original picture spots; Save time thanks to the locals’ experience who know Japan like the back of their hand; Enjoy your visit without worrying about planning or how to get there.

Step out the usual stereotyped guided tour and explore narrow streets, hidden gems, find the good restaurants that only appear on Japanese maps... Visit a Japan that no Western travel guide can describe!

Touring in the most popular places of Tokyo or Kyoto with our guides is naturally also possible.

Our Certified Tour Guides in Tokyo

Our certified guides in Tokyo are friendly, bilingual experts who will help you discover the capital’s various aspects: contemporary architecture (Shinjuku, Marunouchi, etc.), youth-oriented and trendy neighborhoods (Shibuya, Harajuku, etc.), geek and otaku culture (Akihabara, Nakano, etc.), shopping and luxury (Odaiba, Omotesando, Ginza, etc.), serenity (Chiyoda, Setagaya, etc.)

17 Best Things To Do In Tokyo For First-Time Visitors, According To Travelers

I t's no surprise that there is an extensive list of tempting things to do in Tokyo for first-time visitors with such a vast wealth of space and culture to explore in the city. It's the largest metropolitan city on the planet with a population of 37.3 million and one of the world's biggest urban cities according to land area.

Tokyo, the capital city of Japan , is a city of contrasts. There are opportunities to dive into the local culture at historic temples and century-old markets, along with the chance to feel like you're living in the future with cutting-edge art exhibitions, neighborhoods dedicated to video gaming and anime, and even Japan's version of Disneyland.

With only a few days to a week in the city, visitors must properly narrow all the possible options to only the very best things to do in Tokyo. Luckily, your search is over. We figured out the best things to do in Tokyo for first-time visitors by tirelessly combing through reviews and Japanese blogs to reveal the city's gems.

Senso-Ji Temple

Sensō-ji Temple is famed for being the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo, dating back to 628. The story goes that over a thousand years ago, a pair of brothers kept inexplicably fishing a statue of the goddess of mercy out of the nearby Sumida River. The temple was later built in the area to honor that deity officially.

The five-story pagoda's historic esteem and beauty draw in around 30 million visitors to Sensō-ji annually. The colorful, red architecture of Sensō-ji Temple is also a calling card for photographers in Japan. Multiple events are held at Sensō-ji Temple throughout the year, including the Sanja Matsuri Festival and Asakusa Samba Carnival. You can check out the list of annual events on the  Sensō-ji Temple website .

The temple is also right next to Nakamise Shopping Street in the Asakusa neighborhood. It's one of the city's best places to buy souvenirs and grab snacks. The temple and shopping street are good stops for first-time visitors after landing at the  Tokyo International Airport  because they provide a solid introduction to the city.

Tokyo Skytree

The Tokyo Skytree is a broadcasting tower that also happens to be the best spot for first-time visitors to access panoramic views of the city. You'll likely spot the Skytree as soon as you touch down in Tokyo because it's by far the highest structure in the city. At 2,080 feet tall, it is the tallest free-standing tower in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records . It features two different observation decks at varying heights to appreciate the lofty perspective over Tokyo.

The first is called the 1,150-foot-high Tembo Deck, and it has a glass floor to really illustrate to visitors just how high they are inside the Skytree. The second viewpoint is called Tembo Gallery at 1,500 feet high and it enables you to see as far as 43 miles in the distance in every direction. Inside the base of the Skytree, there are tons of shops, restaurants, and even a planetarium and aquarium.

Shibuya is one of the most iconic and busiest areas in all of Tokyo. This Tokyo ward is huge and encompasses popular neighborhoods like Harajuku and Ebisu. It's one of the best places to go for entertainment and nightlife. To get an authentic feel for the organized chaos of Tokyo, first-timers in the city must make an obligatory pilgrimage to Shibuya Crossing.

The Shibuya Crossing is one of the most famous spots in Tokyo, with hectic crowds of approximately 2 to 3 million people passing through the area every single day. First-timers should move with the herd through the crossing, then head up to Mag's Park Rooftop to snap a photo over the chaotic street.

After the crossing, there is plenty of other stuff to do in Shibuya. During the day, go shopping at boutique stores, one of the must-do things in Harajuku . In the evening, check out the local nightlife scene at popular teenie Shibuya bars like Tasuichi.

Tsukiji Outer Fish Market

The early-morning Tsukiji Outer Market has specialized in providing fresh fish to Tokyo for nearly a century. The market is a few blocks long, and strolling through the aisles gives first-time visitors in Tokyo a crash course in Japan's famous food scene. While it is a wholesale market that first gained notoriety for its morning tuna auction, there is plenty of food around for tourists to try on the spot. It's one of the best places to taste raw fish in the form of sushi, sashimi, or kaisendon.

A few of the most famous dishes and stalls to try while walking around Tsukiji Market include the tamagoyaki from Daisada, kaisendon from Tsukiji Koromo Sushi, and onigiri from Marutoyo. One of the easiest ways to explore everything the market has to offer is by joining a tour with a local guide. For example, this  half-day tour  will take you around Tsukiji Fish Market and the Asakusa neighborhood with food samples.

Shopping In Harajuku And Akihabara

Shopping or even just browsing the stores in Tokyo is a must. Two of the best spots for the activity are Harajuku and Akihabara. The shopping scenes in these Tokyo districts are very different, but each one reflects a unique facet of Japanese culture that first-time visitors to the city are typically searching for.

Harajuku is located next to Shibuya Station, and it's a hub for the one-of-a-kind, head-turning street fashion scene that emerged from Tokyo. Along Takeshita Street in this district are countless boutique shops, clothing stores, and places to eat. Alternatively, you can wander around Omotesando Hills Mall to do some indoor shopping in Harajuku.

Akihabara, also known as Electric Town, is a solid spot to visit in Tokyo for gaming products, electronics, and anime shopping. Simply walking around the neon-drenched Tokyo neighborhood is enough to entertain any bright-eyed traveler. The stores in Akihabara range from entertaining to odd, with establishments completely made up of toy vending machines and one of the largest Don Quijote stores in Japan.

Ueno Park is one of Tokyo's many enormous green spaces and has 133 acres of area to discover. It was opened 150 years ago, making Ueno the very first city park in Tokyo and one of the oldest public parks in all of Japan.  It is a particularly good stop for first-time visitors in Tokyo because there are several cultural attractions of the city located within its bounds.

Firstly, six of Tokyo's top museums are inside Ueno Park, including the Tokyo National Museum, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, the National Museum of Nature and Science, and the National Museum of Western Art. The Ueno Park and Zoo are fun stops in the park for families with kids. Finally, there are several temples and shrines inside Ueno Park, such as Shinobazunoike Benten-do, Ueno Toshogu Shrine, and Kiyomizu Kannon-dō Temple.

Ueno Park is also famed for its bloom during the cherry blossom season in Japan, which lasts approximately two weeks in early spring. Around 1,200 cherry trees are planted inside Ueno. During this time of year, the park attracts over 2 million visitors hoping to relax in the romantic scenery and take photos.

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

The sprawling 144 acres of Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden are located in the heart of Tokyo and are home to around 10,000 trees. It was originally constructed for the imperial family in Japan but was later transformed into a public park. The late 19th-century garden is a lush green escape right in the middle of the city's busiest neighborhoods, perfect for people who need a break from the Tokyo crowds.

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is made up of three distinct variations of gardens -- Japanese traditional, landscaping, and formal. No matter what time of year you visit Tokyo, the garden is a must-see, but it's 100% necessary if you're in the city during the spring season from March to May. In the springtime, approximately 900 cherry trees cover the entire garden in varying shades of pink, and it's one of the best places to take in the beauty of Japan's legendary cherry blossom season.

The Imperial Palace

The Imperial Palace in the Chiyoda ward is a key piece of Tokyo's history. The palace was initially built in 1457 and has since served as the Japanese Emperor's residence. The palace is surrounded by three pristine gardens; the East Gardens, Kokyo Gaien National Garden, and Kitanomaru Park. Each of the gardens has its own benefits. For example, in Kitanomaru Park, you can rent a boat to take out on the moat near the palace from April to November.

While visitors aren't permitted in certain parts of the site due to its high-profile nature, they are allowed to wander some of the palace's parks and gardens. It's even totally free to walk around these areas, so it's a great place to visit in Tokyo for budget travelers. The best time of year to visit the Imperial Palace is fall or spring when the flowers are in bloom, or the leaves are changing colors.

teamLab Planets

Teamlab Planets is a fully immersive digital art museum in Tokyo that makes visitors feel like they're stepping into an alternate universe. Teamlab Planets engages all of your senses in a mind-bending way as you explore the four enormous exhibition rooms and two gardens. It's a captivating activity showing first-time visitors the depths of the city's creativity, and you'll definitely want to have your camera handy.

The goal of these exhibits is to make visitors feel indistinguishable from the works around them. At the beginning, visitors take their shoes off, as several of the art installations include a significant water element. Throughout the journey, you wade your way through ankle-deep pools as projected light shows play around you, enter a mirrored room filled with colorful orchards that playfully move around you, and go through other types of otherwordly spaces that are difficult to fully embody in words alone. Many people spend hours stuck in these rooms because of the incredible details of each space.

Memory Lane

Memory Lane is the nickname for a teenie alleyway in the Shinjuku neighborhood lined with places to try authentic Japanese street food. It's located right near the Shinjuku Station's east exit, so it's very easy to reach this hotspot from pretty much anywhere else in the city.

The best time to visit Memory Lane, also known as Omoide Yokocho, is in the evening. This area is more of a night-time hangout, and you probably won't find as much activity during the day. It's a common after-work hangout for locals because the food and drinks are quite affordable.

Memory Lane is distinctly cozier than most of the busy, ultra-modern metropolis that is Tokyo. So, it's a good spot for going out on a date or just getting a more authentic feel for traditional local culture. Walking down the street, you'll pass by dozens of vendors selling things like yakitori, BBQ, and noodles.

Nezu Shrine

Most visitors are familiar with the famous red gates in Kyoto , but there is also a smaller version of this Japanese attraction in Tokyo called the Nezu Shrine. Nezu Shrine was constructed in 1705, making it one of Tokyo's oldest Shinto shrines. It was designed to resemble the Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, and it is also considered to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing shrines in the city by many people because it is surrounded by gardens and fish-filled ponds.

The best time to visit the Nezu Shrine is the month of April because this is when the annual Azalea Spring Festival is held. During this time, 50 different species of azalea flowers burst into full, colorful bloom, which gives the shrine a particularly charming atmosphere. However, no matter the time of year, the Nezu Shrine is a lovely experience and a must-do for first-time visitors in Tokyo.

Japanese Tea Ceremony

Attending a Japanese tea ceremony is a fun and engaging way for first-time visitors in Tokyo to dive into the local culture. The practice was initially introduced in the eighth century as a medicine for the rich but eventually became a country-wide activity. Tea ceremonies can last anywhere from 45 minutes to a few hours and involve a mix of entertaining your tastebuds and learning about Japanese history.

During the ceremony, guests will watch their host go through the process of preparing the tea before enjoying a sweet snack. Once it's complete, the drink will be served in a tea bowl. The processes between individual teahouses can vary slightly, but in general, this is what visitors can expect.

There are a few different places to go and try out a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony in Tokyo. For example, the tea ceremony at Maikoya in Tokyo is amazing. Maikoya has won the Tripadvisor Traveler's Award five years in a row, and the experience includes an English-speaking guide who will walk you through the history and proper protocol before the magic begins.

Ryogoku Kokugikan

Sumo wrestling is a major athletic staple in Japan and has even been called the country's national sport. That's why going to a sumo wrestling event at Ryōgoku Kokugikan sports arena is a must for a first-time visit to Tokyo. Ryōgoku Kokugikan was the world's first sumo wrestling stadium, with roots dating back over 100 years, but the current building was opened to the public in 1985. The stadium can fit up to 10,000 people, so expect lots of energy at these sporting events.

There are three national sumo tournaments held at Ryōgoku Kokugikan throughout the year, which take place in January, May, and September. Each season is around two weeks long, with several matches throughout this time period. There is a fairly good chance of being in Tokyo for a match around these months. You can check out the upcoming schedule for sumo wrestling events on the Ryogoku Kokugikan website .

Tokyo Disney Resort

Tokyo Disney Resort is Japan's version of the iconic Disney theme park. It was opened in the 1980s as the very first Disney theme park outside of the United States and has since worked its way up to being one of the most popular amusement parks in the world. At the time of writing, Tokyo Disney Resort is the third most-visited theme park on the planet, with over a million visitors monthly visitors. Of course, this place is a big hit with families visiting Tokyo, but it can also be an entertaining afternoon for adults.

The Tokyo Disney Resort comprises two major theme parks -- Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. Tokyo Disneyland is modeled after California's park with a slight Japanese twist on the food and attractions. Here, you'll find Disney-themed culinary delicacies like stormtrooper mochi, melon bread, and sparkling berry and cream cheese tapioca tea.

On the other hand, DisneySea is unlike any other Disney park on the planet (literally) because it's the only one of its kind. As the name suggests, DisneySea is devised around ocean legends, and it features themed areas like a futuristic marina called Port Discovery and Lost River Delta, modeled after the ruins of an ancient civilization.

Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge is a key element of Tokyo's skyline and a landmark of the city. Visitors can use this bridge to cross from mainland Tokyo to an artificial island called Odaiba. One of the reasons that this suspension bridge has become such an iconic site in Tokyo is that every night, it goes aglow with colorful solar-powered lights that are usually green, pink, and white. However, the bridge's lights turn rainbow during special events, hence the nickname.

It's possible to go across the bridge by car or on foot to reach Odaiba. It takes approximately 30 minutes to walk across the Rainbow Bridge. The footbridge closes at 9 p.m. in the summer and 6 p.m. in the winter. Walking along the bridge, you'll be able to spot other well-known Tokyo sites, such as Tokyo Tower. When the weather is sunny, you may even be able to see all the way out to Mount Fuji.

Kabuki is a traditional expression of Japanese theater that has been enjoyed since the 17th century. The art form is distinguished by its use of eye-catching, elaborate costumes and dramatic performances. Watching a kabuki show is an excellent way for first-timers (and frequent visitors) in Tokyo to spend an evening.

One of the best places to experience this style of performance is at Kabuki-za in the Ginza neighborhood of Tokyo. This traditional kabuki theater has been putting on performances since 1889. It's not just the show itself that's incredible at Kabuki-za; it's also the architecture of the theater itself.

The layout of the theater is designed to ensure that every one of the 2,000 seats has a clear view of the stage. The theater is also very tourist-friendly, with helpful staff. Whether it is your first time in Tokyo or you are a veteran of the city, a night at a kabuki show is a fabulous experience.

Gotoku-Ji Temple

Any travelers in Japan who need a little extra luck on their side should pay a visit to the Gōtoku-ji Temple, located around 30 to 40 minutes away from the city center of Tokyo. At Gōtoku-ji Temple, you'll be surrounded by thousands of those inexplicably wise white cat statues. According to legend, there will also be a lot of luck in the air.

The story goes that a lord was coaxed into a temple by a cat waving their paw at him just before a thunderstorm, and he took the furry friend as a sign of good fortune. In 1633, the Gōtoku-ji Temple was constructed in honor of the lucky cat to hopefully tether its power to the location. To this day, people go there to pray for good fortune in their lives.

This particular Tokyo attraction is a bit removed from the city's other main attractions. However, it's still not too tricky to reach Gōtoku-ji Temple. The temple is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and can be reached via public transportation by taking the Odakyū line from Shinjuku Station.

I Felt More Like a Local Than a Guest at This Cool New Tokyo Hotel — Here’s Why You Should Go

With just 25 rooms and one of the city's only outdoor pools, Trunk(Hotel) Yoyogi Park is a respite in bustling Tokyo.

Food and Drink

Experiences and amenities, accessibility and sustainability, family-friendly offerings, how to get the most value out of your stay.

Courtesy of TRUNK

In a city with no shortage of expensive luxury skyscraper hotels and humble traditional ryokans, entrepreneur Yoshitaka Nojiri took a different approach with his boutique hotel brand, Trunk. Focusing on the power of community — from welcoming common areas to work or imbibe to design elements and amenities that celebrate local artisans — Trunk is all about immersive experiences with substance.

The brand’s first property, the 15-room Trunk(Hotel) Cat Street, debuted in 2017 and still draws large crowds of caffeinated workers to its lobby each day and guest DJs in the evening. Two years later, the one-suite residence Trunk (House) , located in a former geisha house, became a city retreat for those seeking a home away from home.

Most recently, last September, Trunk(Hotel) Yoyogi Park opened in the quiet Tomigaya neighborhood of Shibuya as an opportunity for what the property calls an “urban recharge.” I checked in soon after the opening, seeking a way to quell my jet lag blues and become reacquainted with the lively streets in a city I’ve always loved. One of the largest green spaces in Tokyo, Yoyogi Park, sits just across the street — making this idea of a peaceful reset even more tangible. On many afternoons, views of the park blanketed in green often made me forget that I was in one of the most populated cities in the world.

TOMOOKI KENGAKU/Courtesy of TRUNK

"Each property is completely unique to the location, from concept to design, products, and services," says Kenji Yui, the hotel's general manager. "The public spaces at Cat Street are open to the city, while Yoyogi Park, except the restaurant, is designed as an intimate space for guests to relax."

Located behind a raw gray concrete facade with balconies draped in greenery, the latest iteration of the stylish boutique brand provides a residential feel throughout its compact, seven-story layout. Trunk commissioned Tokyo-based architect Keiji Ashizawa and Copenhagen-based Norm Architects to evoke the seamless, clean minimalism I love in Japanese design. Neutral and wood palettes create an inviting lobby atmosphere with an organic feel. Tokyo-based artists' works on display are available for purchase, including pieces produced by a social enterprise that houses people with disabilities and delicate washi-paper pendant lights crafted by Kyoto-based Kojima Shoten imbue common spaces with soft light.

Effortless cool is a word I often use to describe Trunk hotels — and the Yoyogi Park property is no different. Even boasting of one of the city’s only outdoor pools doesn’t give way to pomp and flash — I found some of my most peaceful days spent amongst relaxed, discreet hotel guests enamored by the flourishing park across the way and retreating into the pool during the sticky days of summer. Downstairs, al fresco dining at the property’s parkside Pizzeria e Trattoria L’Ombelico is just minutes away from the humming streets of Harajuku and Shibuya, though, on the hotel's tranquil slice of the city, crowds are never a thing.

“Drawing inspiration from Tokyo's varied hues and moods, the hotel encapsulates the interplay of contrasting yet harmonious elements. It mirrors the vibrant Yoyogi Park, the surrounding city blocks, and the famed Shibuya Crossing. It's the epitome of modern and traditional lifestyles converging,” Yui says.

Here, everything you need to know about Trunk(Hotel) Yoyogi Park .

Trunk(Hotel) Yoyogi Park

  • An infinity pool and jacuzzi on the sixth floor overlook the forested Yoyogi Park across the street, and an adjoining lounge offers seafood and custom cocktails.
  • Twenty-five rooms blend thoughtful, minimalist elements of Scandinavian and Japanese design, like natural woods and contemporary artwork.
  • The Owner’s Suite includes a private deck that opens onto the 6th-floor pool area and panoramic views of Yoyogi Park.
  • Guest activities available to book include calligraphy lessons and shrine tours.

There are 20 guest rooms and five suites spread across five floors at Trunk(Hotel) Yoyogi Park.

My room, the airy, sundrenched Owner’s Suite, unveiled the city via floor-to-ceiling window views of Yoyogi Park’s canopy tree-lined pathways and a cosmopolitan skyline. Right below, a group of hip Tokyoites imbibed over cocktails in the heated jacuzzi. The nearly 700-square-foot penthouse-style accommodation has its own dedicated floor that features a living room with a curved peachy Kvadrat-textile sofa, a separate bedroom, and a bathroom with an adjoining terrace and park views.

On warm evenings, I’d open the balcony’s sliding doors and dip into the white freestanding bathtub with curated Epsom salts for guests — a much-welcomed perk to a day of walking and touring. Other room categories offer park or city views, design touches including rattan space dividers and slanted balconies draped in foliage, plus all the amenities that make the Trunk brand stand out–including black recycled flip flops that guests can take home, stylish yukata robes to wear to the pool, and an eclectic minibar selection that features CBD chocolate and cricket insect snacks.

Frequented by both residents and hotel guests, the streetfront, all-day dining Pizzeria e Trattoria L’Ombelico has a lively and casual mood, accented by decor that includes Norm Architects-designed oak chairs and wall lamp accents produced by Eiko Miki, a Japanese copper-plate artist. A woodfire oven that prepares a variety of red and white Napoli-style pizza options, including a memorable garlicky clam pie called the Noriji, is central to the menu here, as are locally sourced veg and crudo dishes and pasta. In cocktail-focused Tokyo, wine isn't an afterthought either, as my spicy salami pie was paired perfectly with a bright, cherry-reminiscent pinot noir. Plus, in a city that's notoriously spendy for food, a special set lunch menu, with pizza, pasta, dessert, and coffee or tea for around $18, is welcome.

Upstairs at the mod poolside lounge (open daily until midnight), an oyster bar offers daily selections of both domestic and international catches alongside several other crustaceans like king crab and lobster. Here, hotel guests can enjoy poolside dining and low- to no-alcohol cocktails or herb-infused gin and whiskey concoctions on emerald-colored lounge chairs.

Trunk’s intimate layout made it easy to spend most of my time poolside with a book on a taupe sunlounger. Most guests had the same idea, with the nighttime hours increasing the liveliness of the adjacent bar area with a glittering cityscape as a backdrop.

Immersion into Japanese culture is a central tenet of each Trunk property. At their latest parkside iteration, new experiences include calligraphy classes, shrine visits, and vintage clothing store tours that can all be scheduled by the hotel staff.

Other excursions available to guests include access to places that are typically hard to walk into, including viewing the famed tuna auction area at Toyosu Fish Market and obtaining highly coveted tickets to Ryogoku Kokugikan National Sumo Hall , where you can share a post-event meal with a star sumo athlete.

Trunk's brand focuses on five elements to garner sustainability : environment, local first, diversity, health, and culture. I love the Cat Street property’s vintage rental bikes, all rebuilt from abandoned bicycles in Tokyo. Branded mineral water bottles are sourced in collaboration with More Trees, which carries out forest conservation. There are multipurpose bathrooms in public spaces and elevators at both the Cat Street and Yoyogi Park locations. Suites at Yoyogi Park are barrier-friendly, which means they're accessible to wheelchair users without any in-room steps.

Children can unlock their inner artist with coloring books available on request. The environmentally friendly crayons provided are made of vegetables that are safe for children who may find one in their mouths. Baby baths, cribs, and children’s toothbrushes are available upon request.

I often felt more like a resident at Trunk than a hotel guest, partly because of how seamlessly the property blends into its neighborhood-friendly environment.

Walk just five minutes, and you’ll pass playgrounds where children kick soccer balls while dogs wait excitedly to enter the park with their owners. For more lively action, the boutique- and bar-lined streets of Shibuya and Harajuku are about a 20-minute walk away. My favorite stops during my days out included ordering the chocolatey dark roast coffee from Cafe Rostro and walking just around the corner to Nata de Cristiano for their sublime eggy custard tarts.

Trunk also provides a wonderfully curated map of places to eat, shop, and relax in the neighborhood, or you can wander the grassy hillsides of Yoyogi Park just across the street. Another perk: the property is just a 25-minute taxi ride from Haneda International Airport, though when I left, I wished it was longer — as there’s never enough time in such an electric city.

All Trunk hotels are part of Design Hotels , a boutique collection of more than 300 luxury, hip hotels around the world. Booking directly through Design Hotels can include various perks and offers — recent booking incentives have included book three nights, get the fourth free, and complimentary breakfast.

How SEVENTEEN turned their Japan tour into buzzy city-wide extravaganzas

From express trains to Ferris wheels and cafe menus, K-pop artists turn cities into their very own playgrounds with The City takeovers. NME heads to Tokyo to explore the project by mega label HYBE that could be the future of K-pop tours

SEVENTEEN – BE THE SUN, Osaka

W hen a big artist comes to town, the buzz usually follows them – from the airport to their hotel to the venue. But in Tokyo, the excitement about SEVENTEEN began two weeks before the PLEDIS boyband’s arrival, and permeated vast regions of the city. The group were finally getting their chance to headline the Tokyo Dome after their 2020 concert there was cancelled due to the pandemic. Some of the city’s most popular tourist attractions were lit up orange, plastered with photos of the group and soundtracked by their music. It was a similar story in Osaka, where even trains have been wrapped in graphics featuring the band, and Nagoya – the other two stops on their 2022 Japanese tour.

The city-wide hype for SEVENTEEN meant HYBE’s plan was working: The City, a project by the parent label of SEVENTEEN, BTS , Tomorrow X Together and more groups, aims to extend and elevate the concert experience far beyond the four walls of a venue. Years in the making, The City was first tested on a smaller scale at BTS’ Love Yourself: Speak Yourself [The Final] shows in Seoul in 2019. At those concerts, a wide-ranging fan zone was created outside the city’s Olympic Stadium, broader food options were offered and improvements to the merchandise-buying experience were made. Plans to expand the idea with BTS’ world tour in 2020 were scuppered by COVID-19 , but The City made a grand comeback with the seven-piece’s Las Vegas shows earlier this year. There, fans could visit restaurants offering the members’ favourite dishes, book hotel rooms themed around the group, and more.

SEVENTEEN – BE THE SUN, Osaka

After another successful run at BTS’ Busan show in October, The City made an ambitious leap forward with SEVENTEEN’s Japanese tour, as it rolled out in multiple cities on one tour leg for the first time. Growing the venture has come with its challenges. “Collaboration with attractions and businesses that are local to the city is what lies at the core of every The City project,” HYBE Japan’s CEO Hyunrock Han tells NME , “and as it requires building a network of activities, the preparation for each instalment is an arduous process and varies every time.” Taking SEVENTEEN’s version of The City across three locations became increasingly complex as more and more partners and different experiences were introduced to the plan.

SEVENTEEN – The City, Osaka

The itinerary for this stint of the project certainly didn’t lack range or creativity. In Osaka, there were express trains decorated with SEVENTEEN graphics. Fans could relive the band’s 2019 ‘Ode to You’ concerts in Japan through a metaverse experience displaying a digital version of the Umeda district. You could go on a stamp rally – a popular activity in Japan that sets a course with different locations, where you can collect stamps – across 18 landmarks, including the Hep Five Ferris wheel – also covered in SEVENTEEN graphics, of course. Carats, the group’s fanbase, could snap up limited-edition The City train tickets and at Nankai Namba Station see SEVENTEEN ads covering staircases and the 70-metre media street. In Nagoya this past weekend a light display brightened up the Sakae district.

SEVENTEEN – The City, Osaka

Meanwhile, in Tokyo, you could fill every moment of the day with SEVENTEEN-related activities. In Shibuya, a pop-up shop boasted racks of special merchandise and a “museum” at HMV showed photos, videos and more, while a “winter illumination” at Tokyo Dome City lit up every night of the concert weekend, playing the group’s songs like the seasonally appropriate ‘Darl+ing (Holiday Version)’ . Three locations of the BOX cafe&space were dedicated to the group: their photos were plastered on the walls, a video message from the band played in the background, and dishes were curated by the band, from tan tan miso soup chosen by Mingyu to seafood curry soup picked by Woozi .

SEVENTEEN – The City, Tokyo

Over at the Tokyo Skytree, an audiovisual experience allowed visitors to listen to SEVENTEEN’s music as they gazed across the city’s views, or stop and take photos in dedicated photo zones (including one where a digital version of your chosen member stands by your side). At night, the Skytree was illuminated in the tour’s official colour orange and the band’s representative colours, while after the concerts the landmark became the location for fan parties where the group’s music videos played on the glass windows of the observation deck, intertwining SEVENTEEN with the scenes below.

Finally, hotel packages like at the Royal Park Canvas in Ginza let fans wind down with free gifts themed around the band, SEVENTEEN photo panels decorating their rooms and a copy of their 2021 SEVENTEEN in Carat Land DVD on loan to watch on big pulldown projector screens.

SEVENTEEN – The City, Tokyo

“A dome tour in Japan is something SEVENTEEN themselves and their fans, Carats, have long considered a ‘dream’ of theirs,” Han says. “So we wanted The City to add a sense of ‘togetherness’ to the experience of a dream becoming a reality. In order to do so, the programmes were built in a way that does not lie too far from our everyday life. The City brought their favourite artist into the local transportation, the local cafes, the most iconic landmarks, allowing the fans to really feel like they are a part of this one big celebration, this moment of a dream come true.”

Outside Tokyo Dome, as fans thronged outside before the concert started, student Hina told NME that having SEVENTEEN events stretching from Shibuya to the Skytree made the excitement of the concert feel stronger than ever. “Seeing them [everywhere] and being able to take part in lots of [activities] makes it feel more alive,” she smiled. “Tokyo is SEVENTEEN-land right now.”

The City isn’t just an opportunity for fans to immerse themselves in the world of their favourite artists, according to Han: it also provides them with a new space to connect with their fellow fans. Seeing SEVENTEEN enthusiasts “finally getting to interact with one another, in person, at The City attractions” was one of “the most rewarding moments” of the project, he says.

For SEVENTEEN themselves, seeing their fans coming together and experiencing new parts of the cities they’re touring has been nothing but positive. “It’s our pleasure to be able to see all our Carats enjoy The City,” the group tells NME over email. “We hope all our fans are able to take away some of their best memories from our ongoing tour, from all the festivities and experiences laid out before and after the show as a part of The City, and from the show SEVENTEEN and Carats complete together, as ‘Team SVT’.”

SEVENTEEN – BE THE SUN, Osaka

O ver the last two years, local and national economies have taken a big hit from the pandemic, with businesses large and small rocked by sudden and ongoing closures and cancellations. Japan’s economy shrank by 4.5 percent in 2020 and, although it has rebounded a little since then, it’s hoped that events like The City can provide a financial boost – BTS’ Vegas outing reportedly had an estimated economic impact of $162million, according to Arirang TV.

Although data isn’t yet available for the impact of the ‘Be The Sun’ and The City stint in Japan, SEVENTEEN’s weeks of activity in Osaka weren’t just focused on big tourist attractions that have stronger financial safety nets than, say, mom-and-pop stores. “We also implemented localised events like the SEVENTEEN-themed stamp rally in Osaka tied to 18 different landmarks and popular areas in the city, working closely with and driving people to local businesses,” Han notes.

With a total of 270,000 people attending the six shows across the tour, a boost to each city’s economy and tourism seems inevitable as fans attend restaurants, stores and hotels not included in The City programmes. Future versions of the project in Japan will likely contribute even more – this edition was focused on domestic fans thanks to the country’s ongoing programme of reopening and recovering from the pandemic (at the concerts themselves, fans are still not permitted to cheer and scream because of COVID restrictions, making noise with clappers instead).

Han also notes that non-SEVENTEEN fans could still be drawn in by The City – another potential positive impact on tourism. “We noticed that the crowd gathering around The City spots were drawing the eyes of many passing by, so we hope the project also helped with the efforts being put into revitalising the local attractions,” he says.

SEVENTEEN and BTS aren’t the only groups that will be involved with The City as it continues to progress and grow. HYBE plans for the project to evolve in different locations and with more artists under its banner, with Han saying each result will be “different each time”. “In essence, though, the goal of The City will always be to provide an extensive and immersive fan experience,” he says.

SEVENTEEN – BE THE SUN, Tokyo

While this innovative and ambitious project is, so far, solely the work of HYBE, its success means it probably won’t be long before other labels – in K-pop and beyond, especially due to the company’s ties to Geffen Records in the US – try to replicate the idea. Although The City isn’t something smaller artists could pull off, some arena and stadium-headlining acts could find creating whole immersive worlds around tour stops a smart and compelling way to boost revenue and offer fans something new.

For HYBE, the project is ultimately a testament to the thrill of the concert experience. “The project augments and diversifies the experiences before and after the show, from the moment of ticket purchase, the weeks of anticipation leading up to the show, making it to the concert venue and to the lingering excitement post-concert,” Han explains. Each time The City runs, regardless of artist or location, the label hopes to learn and understand more about “how all these moments add up to complete the concert experience”.

As that knowledge grows, Han is positive the rest of the industry will make “greater efforts to improve each of these moments”. As they do so, city-wide takeovers could one day become the new normal for the world’s biggest artists.
