An Insight into Chhattisgarh Tourism

Travelling to Chhattisgarh is like planning a trip to ultimate bliss. The state is blessed generously by nature and you come across examples of that every few miles. Its landscape, which is dominated for the most part by dense forests, is dotted with waterfalls, caves and a rich wildlife. Located in central India, it offers its fair share of adventure, sightseeing and exploration. The state is home to many temples and some towns which trace their origin to historical times, thus fascinating tourists, historians and archaeologists constantly. To escape the sweltering heat during summers, nature has gifted it with several hill stations, each as beautiful as the other. If you prefer coming close to modernity, head towards Raipur, its capital city which boasts an impressive number of multiplexes, cafes, restaurants, malls and markets. An outing can also include a visit to its museums which introduce you to its tribal heritage, history, food habitats and other artefacts of the various tribal communities.

One cannot gain an insight into Chhattisgarh tourism without mentioning its tribal culture, which traces its origins to ancient times. As a tourist, you will be fascinated by the numerous tribes inhabiting this region which are culturally diverse from each other. Some of the most famous of them are Gonds, Abhuj Maria, Bison Horn Maria, Halba and Dhurvaa. Among these, people belonging to the Bison Horn Maria tribe are easily distinguished by their headdress. These are designed in a way that they resemble the horns of a wild bison. Their clothing is often bright and colorful, with the use of cotton being dominant. Women wear knee length saris. Both men and women share a love for jewellery, with the most popular items being wooden bangles, metal casts and silver ghungroos. They get their source of entertainment from cock fights and tribal dances. Some of the popular dances are Karma, Sua Nacha, Pandavani, Raut Nacha, Panthi Dance and Jhirliti. You can get a glimpse of the tribal art and culture at the museums, or exploring a village.

Among the most popular tourism places in Chhattisgarh are its waterfalls. The king of waterfalls is the Chitrakote Falls, which, due to its height and width, is also known as the “Niagara Falls of India”. Located to the west of Jagdalpur city on the Indravati river, it falls ferociously from a height of almost 100ft. You can hear it from a distance, and upon arrival, will find out that it’s nothing short of a spectacle. The other famous waterfall is the Tirathgarh Falls, which are formed when the River Kanger cascades over seven steps before landing with a ferocious drop. The best part is, you can view these falls from a close proximity. Other famous waterfalls in the state are Mendri Ghoomar, Amritdhara, Rajpuri, Chhuri, Tiger Point, Rakasganda, Devdhara, Kailash Gufa and Kendai.

The joys of visiting Chhattisgarh are not limited to sightseeing however. If you are up for adventure tourism, then there are several caves to check out. The foremost among these are Kailash Caves. Located in close proximity to the Tirathgarh Waterfalls, these caves are home to the most incredible formations of stalactites and stalagmites. These are millions of years old and several of them are worshipped as Shiva lingams, as if evidenced by the markings. Visitors to the caves also notice certain reverberations which sound magical. Kutumsar Caves also captivate the tourists with their strange formations and the perfect darkness amidst which they exist.

Kutumsar caves are also home to a particular species of genetically blind fish. Several of them are worshipped as Shiva lingams, as is evidenced by the markings. Visitors to the caves also notice certain reverberations which sound magical. It’s an absolute thrill to venture into the darkness and explore these amazing natural formations. Sitabhagra is another cave with mythological importance, since it is believed to have been the residence of Goddess Sita. Human footprints in one corner are as mysterious today as they were thousands of years ago. Another cave which is a major tourist attraction in Chhattisgarh, particularly for history lovers and archaeologists are the Singhanpur Caves. Situated about 20 km from Raigarh, they are home to the oldest sculptures on earth which are believed to date date back to 30,000BC. Other famous caves worth mentioning are Kabra, Ananya, Bhangra, Ramgarh and Jogimara.

To explore the tribal heritage of Chhattisgarh, you must visit its museums. One of these is Mahant Ghasidas Sangrahalaya. Located in Raipur, the state’s capital, it was established in 1875 and built by Raja Mahant Ghasidas of Rajnandgaon. Here, you come across a diverse collection of exhibits and artefacts dating back to the Stone Age. The Sculpture Gallery houses stone idols of various gods and goddesses. Other galleries inside the museum are natural history, anthropology, tribal, ancient arms and armoury. Purkhauti Muktangan Museum is another place to explore and understand the tribal culture, art, heritage, and basically anything else about them. This open air museum showcases the habitat, folk dances, artefacts and food habits of the tribals.

If a spiritual and religious experience is what you are after, then there are several temples which you can visit. The most important of these is Maa Bamleshwari temple in the city of Dongargarh. Situated on a hilltop at almost 1,600ft, the temple complex is actually home to two temples, Badi Bamleshwari and Chhoti Bamleshwari. These are visited by a large number of tourists during the occasions of Dussehra and Ram Navami. A major attraction during this time is the fair. It is also the only place in the state where you can enjoy a ropeway ride, and this in itself delights visitors to no end. Danteshwari Temple is another temple enthusiastically visited by tourists in large numbers. It is one of those temples which is revered by both HIndus and tribals. Built by the Chalukya kings of Bastar in honour of their family goddess, Devi Danteshwari, its main attraction is the sanctum sanctorum, which, it is widely believed, was built more than 800 years back. An interesting tradition of the temple is that men have to wear a lungi before entering the temple. Bhoramdeo Temple, also known as the Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh, is one of the ancient temples of the state. It gets its name after the similarity in its design and structure to that temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it was built somewhere between the 7th to 11th century AD by King Ramchandra of Nag dynasty. Its location also does much to enhance its overall beauty.

Among other top things to do in Chhattisgarh, one is visiting its wildlife sanctuaries and tiger reserves. Among the most famous of them is Guru Ghasidas National Park, which is home to an incredible wildlife. Some of the mammals commonly spotted are jackals, four horned antelopes, striped hyena, sloth bear, wild dogs, porcupines and monkeys. The park is also home to around 309 species of birds and is also visited by migratory birds. Other famous national park is the Kanger Valley National Park. Located on the banks of the Khola River, it is particularly noted for the diversity in its topography, which is characterized by plateaus, streams, steep slopes and valleys. It is also reputed to be one of the few regions in India which is home to untouched forests. The wildlife here includes mammals ranging from tigers, leopards, barking deer, jackals, wild boar and monitor lizards to snakes. The various kinds of avi fauna like hill myne, red jungle owls, spotted owlets, peacocks, parrots and steppe eagles are also found in this sanctuary. To watch the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger, you should visit the two tiger reserves in the state, Achanakmar Tiger Reserve and Indravati Tiger Reserve.

Not many people know that Chhattisgarh is also home to several hill stations which provide a welcome escape from the stifling heat during the summer season. The famous hill stations of the state are Baila Dila, Gadiya, Ambikapur, Mainpat and Chirimiri. Among these, Gadiya hill station is especially famous for the Doodh River, which is named because its water resembles the color of milk. It comes alive during the occasion of Mahashivratri. The other attraction is a water tank which sits atop a mountain and is believed to never run dry. The famous sightseeing & tourist attractions here are Shivani Temple, Malanjhkudum Falls, Charre Marre Falls and Kanker Masjid. You can get your fill of trekking and hiking at Baila Dilla hill station, whose landscape is marked by gardens, woodlands and waterfalls. Of course, no mention of the hill stations in Chhattisgarh is complete without Mainpat. There are numerous opportunities for sightseeing, with the famous tourist places being the Tiger’s Point, Tibetan Buddhist Temples, Machhli Point and Mehta Point. It is such a great experience to rush off into these high altitude places and enjoy the beautiful surroundings with the pleasant weather to keep you company.

This is one of the largest states in India and has been formed not too long ago. The state borders Madhya Pradesh , Maharashtra , Andhra Pradesh , Orissa and Jharkhand; therefore it is placed to the center east of the country. The state has hilly terrain as well as plains, with several rivers flowing around it. You can easily reach Chhattisgarh by air, rail or road as the cities are well connected to each other and there shouldn’t be any problem traveling. Tourism in Chhattisgarh is popular during winters when the air is cool and the climate is pleasant to go out and see different attractions. The Bilaspur Airport distanced at 12.5 km from Bilaspur city is the second major airport and the third one is the Raigarh Airport at 10.2 km from the main city. There are several railheads out of which some important ones are The Bilaspur Junction railway station distanced at 1.4 km from the city and Raipur Junction Railway Station located at 1.4 km from the city. These railheads have trains coming in with more frequency and are the recommended railway stations for long distance travel.

Getting Around:

You can choose to ride the CSRTC buses that will take you to almost all the places, especially the attractions. If you want a more comfortable ride, take a taxi, which might come out a little more expensive or you can take an auto rickshaw as well. You can also rent out a car for the purpose of sightseeing.

About Chhattisgarh

The Very Heart of Incredible India

The state has various old historic points, exquisite wild life, wonderfully cut sanctuaries, regal residences, waterfalls, cavern, rock depictions and slope levels. The greater part of these locales is untouched and unexplored and offers unique and unforgettable experience to vacationers, along with mouth watering cuisine.

Chhattisgarh has positioned itself as the destination ‘full of surprises’ with some of the amazing destinations which could certainly lead to the growth of tourism in the future. It has created a niche for itself on the tourist map of India.

Chhattisgarh Tourism is also trying to incorporate carrying capacity analysis to the resource utilization. The state is covered with nearly 45% of the forests and 32% of tribal population, therefore, it offers immense opportunities for Eco-Ethno, Adventure and Cultural tourism.

This captivating state offers an abundance of unique experiences that truly set it apart. Chhattisgarh encompasses a plethora of reasons why it should unquestionably feature on every traveller’s must-visit list.

With lush green mountains, frivolous streams and waterfalls, Chhattisgarh is the perfect retreat for nature lovers. From the magnificent Satdhara Waterfall in Bastar to the lush green pastures of Mainpat and the majestic Chitrakoot waterfalls in Bastar, Chhattisgarh boast a bounty of natural wonders untouched by humans.. Some of the other places you can visit are Tirathgarh Falls, Rajeev Smriti Van, Neelam Sarai, Maitri Bagh, Taat Pani Hot Springs and Jogidhara River to experience the true essence of the land-locked state.

Historical heritage

Filled with several royal palaces and historic monuments, each with a unique traditional and cultural value associated with it, it is a pleasure for every history buff to explore the several sightseeing attractions of Chhattisgarh. Bastar Palace is one archaic palace that served as the chief administrative building of the Bastar district. Constructed when the kings of Bastar moved their capital to Jagdalpur, this is one of the top historic tourist places to visit in Chhattisgarh today, and you will at once feel transported back to the times of kings and queens.

A mysterious idol of Lord Ganesha is located on the peak of Dholkal hillock, at a height of 2994 feet from sea level. This beautiful stone idol of Lord Ganesha believed to be made during the Naga dynasty between the 10th and 11th centuries is the main attraction of the site. You can also visit Palace Kawardha, royal hideout Gadiya Mountain, Ratanour Fort and Kanker Palace to soak in the history of Chhattisgarh.

Sacred temples

Chhattisgarh is culturally rich and is blessed generously in terms of ancient temples and unique tribal culture. Chhattisgarh has a lot of religious destinations that bring devotion and natural beauty together. Not only are there a ton of intact old temples in the state, but Chhattisgarh also attracts a lot of archaeologists because of the number of ruins and architectural remains found here. Some famous temples in the state include the Maa Bamleshwari Devi Temple in Dongargarh, the Danteshwari Temple at Dantewada, and the Amarkantak Temples in the Maikal Mountains.

Cuisine that made it to Gordon Ramsay’s menu

If you are an adventurous foodie, there’s one dish that has to be on your bucket list. It’s a rather unusual chutney called Chapda Chutney which is made of red ants and their eggs and is a local delicacy in Bastar, Chhattisgarh. You’ll also be surprised to know that the tribal delicacy of Chhattisgarh’s Bastar has made it to Gordon Ramsay’s menu. Chapda chutney is chutney made of red ants, which is deemed not only healthy but also a food item that keeps diseases at bay. Collecting the insects from local forests is an arduous task. Each nest is surrounded by protective rings of male ants guarding the egg-laying females. At the slightest sign of danger, the males will attack. As they endure painful bites, the harvesters crush the males, add them to their bags, and then move on to the females and their eggs.

To make the chutney, villagers first crush and dry all the ants and eggs, then grind them with a mortar and pestle. Then they’ll add tomatoes, coriander, garlic, ginger, chilli, salt, and a bit of sugar to create a smooth, orange paste. Sometimes, they might cook the paste further with oil and chopped onions. First-time tasters take note: It will be very spicy. The ants’ high levels of formic acid, coupled with the added seasonings, make this chutney extremely hot.

Bustling tribal markets

The tribal haats in Chhattisgarh, notably in Narayanpur within the Bastar region, are bustling weekly markets that offer a vibrant spectacle of colours and cultural richness. Here, you will encounter tribal women engaging in the sale of “suksi.” Suksi is dried fish prepared through a process of smoking and drying. The market is adorned with an abundance of locally grown vegetables, showcasing a variety of fresh greens with intriguing names like karmotta bhaji, chaati-bhaji, kanda bhaji, chunchunia bhaji, khattha bhaji, jirrah bhaji, and bohar bhaji. You can also witness cock fights in these haats. These markets provide a captivating glimpse into the local way of life, where you can immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere and experience the diverse culinary and artisanal traditions of the tribal communities.

A variety of local alcohol

In Bastar and other tribal regions of Chhattisgarh, the consumption of native liquor is deeply ingrained in the local culture. It is widely accepted without objection. For the tribal people, alcohol serves as a source of confidence, assisting them in navigating their lives in the jungle. Exploring the vibrant tribal haats, one can come across a variety of alcoholic beverages available for sale, such as Mahua wine, crafted from the blossoms of the mahua tree that bloom during the summer. This unique alcoholic beverage possesses a smoky flavour reminiscent of vodka and is prominently enjoyed during festivals.

However, it is important to exercise caution when trying it, as it carries a robust taste and high potency. Another notable beverage is Salphi, derived from tapping the salphi (fishtail sago palm) tree, offering a distinct flavour similar to over-fermented beer. Landa, on the other hand, is prepared through the fermentation of rice. As you wander through the haat streets, you’ll find women lining the way, their pots of drinks accompanied by ladles. They will readily pour the beverages into disposable bowls made of various leaves.

A melting pot of unique festivals

Chhattisgarh is a treasure trove of cultural richness. One of the most captivating events is the Dussehra festival, celebrated throughout India. However, the Dussehra festival in Bastar holds a distinctive charm that sets it apart and is the world’s longest celebration . Rather than commemorating the defeat of the demon king Ravana, the tribes in Bastar pay homage to Devi Mavli, the native deity of the region. She is revered as the elder sister of Devi Danteshwari, the goddess of the Kakatiya family. This unique celebration showcases a fusion of tribal traditions and spiritual fervour, making it a truly mesmerizing and unforgettable Dussehra experience.

A treasure trove of wildlife

Chhattisgarh is one of the greenest states in India, with 41.33% of its total area covered by dense forests. It would not be an exaggeration to state that Chhattisgarh’s way of life is built around the virgin forests and their rich bio-diversity. The untouched beauty of Chhattisgarh’s flora and fauna, makes you fall in love with this state. One of the prime tourist attractions of the state remains its wildlife areas. Chhattisgarh has 3 national parks and 11 wildlife sanctuaries, which can give you a supreme animal sighting experience. You can visit Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary in Mahasamund, Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary in Dhamtari, Udanti Wildlife Sanctuary in Raipur and Kanger Valley National Park in Basta for the ultimate wildlife experience!
