Lorde reschedules Australian & New Zealand tour dates until 2023

For the first time in five years, pop queen Lorde will return to Australian and New Zealand stages in early 2023.

The tour dates have now been rescheduled from February and March 2022. The announcement comes amidst the continuing uncertainty around the current NZ outbreak, and unknown implementation dates of the new traffic light system to ensure the tour can proceed with some surety and without risk of last-minute lockdowns.

I am beyond devastated to be postponing these shows. Starting the tour in New Zealand was always really important to me, and would have been a huge high. I fought this decision for a long time, but the truth is that touring internationally through a COVID outbreak has a ton of unforeseen moving parts, and I’d much rather play for you when we’re all confident it will go smoothly. I want to apologise wholeheartedly to the fans. I’m so gutted to let you down, but so grateful for your understanding. We’ll rage next year . LORDE

The global powerhouse dropped her first slice of new music in four years when she broke the internet with single ‘Solar Power’ earlier this year, now she will take over venues in her native New Zealand before jumping across the pond and delighting Aussie fans in February and March 2023.

With the long-awaited release of her new album,   also titled  Solar Power  – penned with long-time collaborator and producer Jack Antonoff – it is going to be a very big few years for Lorde. Her Australian and New Zealad tour announcement begins a global tour that will take her across Europe, the UK, and North America.

Lorde - Solar Power

Lorde has been slinging pop gems our way for close to a decade now.

At just 16 years old, she released her debut album  Pure Heroine , going on to win  t wo Grammy Awards including the coveted  Album of the Year.  The album peaked at #1 in over 20 countries, and gave us much-loved tracks ‘Royals’, ‘Tennis Court’ and ‘Team’.

It’s follow up, 2017’s Melodrama, launched Lorde to superstar status – driven largely by the inescapable ‘Green Light’. The record garnered critical acclaim, earning a slew of award nominations, and multi-platinum status.

The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors. In times of heartache, grief, deep love or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learnt to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through. Lorde on her third album Solar Power

Lorde - Green Light

Lorde will take her new album Solar Power to stages around Australia and New Zealand in February and March 2023. Tickets are on sale via Ticketmaster.com.au.

LIVE: LORDE with Laura Jean – Perth, WA, 18 Mar 2023 Belvoir Amphitheatre, Perth, Western Australia – Saturday, 18 March 2023 Review & photos [unofficially taken from the crowd by phone] Pete Gardner

lorde tour perth

Perth crowds are a patient lot, we have to be. Perth always seems to be after thought, or just totally overlooked on the touring schedules, probably more due to the logistics of reaching the world’s most remote city than anything else, and over the last 3 years that patience has been tested. But tonight, that patience was rewarded.

After a pandemic induced 10-month delay from the original date, Ella Yelich- O’Connor, otherwise known as Lorde, reached the climax of her massive 73 date, 20 country, Solar Power world tour. After headlining Glastonbury, both legs of the transcontinental Primavera Sound Festival and the Life is Beautiful festival in Los Angeles, it feels like a privilege to finally see Lorde performing at the far more intimate and beautiful Belvoir Amphitheatre in the Swan Valley, north of Perth.

lorde tour perth

The Venue is understandably sold out, and the queue has already grown well in advance of the 6pm doors, as Lorde’s legion of fans line up for pole position to make it to the barrier. As I wander into the venue, past the huge queue in front of the merch stand, past the bar selling the obligatory overpriced beer and wine, I head down to the floor of the amphitheatre to find the area in front of the stage already packed an hour before Laura Jean, tonight’s support, comes on.

Laura Jean is welcomed by the already enthusiastic crowd, joined on stage by a full band including a violin and cello, all uncomfortably lined up in a single row on the thin strip of stage remaining in front of the curtain hiding Lorde’s set. Laura Jean advises the crowd she has a toy electric piano, and is worried about the sound. She was right to be worried – the sound is poor. I wonder if there is a problem with the bands monitors with the violin obviously out of time with the piano during the first number. The piano sounds tinny, the bass is mixed so far forward it drowns out the rest of the band and the vocals are thin and lost in the mess. This is such a shame as the songs are good, and the band is popular with the crowd. The sound improved marginally as the set progressed, but I felt an injustice was done and they deserved much better.

Come 9 pm the amphitheatre is at capacity. The floor is more tightly packed than the proverbial sardine can, and the sense of excitement is building. The curtain drops to a huge wave of noise from the crowd, and the stage set is revealed as a temple to the sun with a giant sundial in the centre, the arm doubling as a staircase, rotating continuously to a new position between and during songs. A huge circular sun with constantly changing light serves as the backdrop.

After announcing this as the last night of the tour, and promising everyone she will just “bliss the fuck out!” a good helping of the Solar Power album follows. A first costume change from a green suit to an ochre dress makes her look like the high priestess of the temple, ironic as she sings the line “if you’re looking for a saviour, well that’s not me” from the brilliant album opener, The Path.

Lorde’s third album is musically her strongest to date and although a change in direction from the electropop of her first two releases, the crowd love every note and are enthusiastically singing along. I confess I can get frustrated when it’s hard to hear the singer you have paid good money to see being drowned out by some tone deaf fan next to you, but tonight was more like a massed choir, celebrating the music.

Over the next few numbers Lorde takes time to chat to the crowd. As she introduces the songs and discusses her reasons for writing the last album, she gets understandably emotional with this being the last performance of the Solar Power tour.

The tempo soon builds back up, and the crowd really comes alive jumping in unison to the breakdown in Ribs, followed by the brilliant Louvre from the Melodrama album. Liability is a big crowd favourite as the mass choir again finds its voice, and the second act closes with another costume change.

Appearing back on stage in silver baggy pants and a lilac corset for the third act, the obvious choreographing of the band becomes less intrusive as Lorde connects much more with the crowd. She powers through a selection of tracks from the Melodrama album including Sober, Supercut and Perfect Places. The set draws towards its climax with a brilliant rendition of the title track Solar Power, followed by the crowd really going off for Green Light. The set finishes with the album closer Oceanic Feeling, as the band leave the stage for the encore break.

At this point, hero of the night awards must go to the two guys who could just be seen at the back of the stage manually spinning the giant sundial throughout the show. I wonder if it’s the same guys every night or if the crew take turns being the sundial roadies?

lorde tour perth

The Sun backdrop which has been going in and out of eclipse all night reignites for the encores. Lorde re-emerges to a huge wave of noise from the crowd, having changed costume again, now sporting a black one piece. A selection of songs from the first Album, Pure Heroine, finish a superb set list. 400 Lux, the mega hit Royals, and final song of the tour, Team, are received enthusiastically with the floor of the amphitheatre a jumping, singing mass of people.

Lorde comes down to connect with the crowd sharing hugs along the barrier before disappearing once more for the final time.

The first half of tonight’s set really was a by-the-book production, well-rehearsed and confident, but the show developed into something more as the night progressed, and Lorde let her emotions build and connected with the crowd. Perth, as I said above, is often at the end of the touring schedule, which means do get a good number of these tour finales. Sometimes it’s worth the wait.

As Lorde’s highly-anticipated Australian tour edges closer, two stellar support acts have been confirmed.

For the first time in six years, the Kiwi pop superstar will return to venues across Australia as part of her Solar Power World Tour next March.

Beginning in Brisbane on Wednesday, March 8th, Lorde will then perform twice in both Melbourne and Sydney, before concluding the Australian leg in Perth on Saturday, March 18th (see full dates below).

After making their Australian debut at Sydney WorldPride in the same month, rising indie-pop trio MUNA will support Lorde at her Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney shows.

Under Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records label, the three-piece released their self-titled third studio album this year to positive reviews.

And in Perth only, Sydney singer-songwriter Laura Jean will join Lorde for one special performance. A two-time nominee for the Australian Music Prize, Jean released her latest album, Amateurs , earlier this year.

Lorde’s tour is in support of her own third studio album, Solar Power , which debuted atop both the Australian and New Zealand Albums Charts.

“Like Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift before her, the New Zealand star embraces mellowness on a third album shaded by climate anxiety and a rejection of celebrity,” The Guardian wrote in a positive review, while Pitchfork called Solar Power a “self-aware, scaled-back album.”

Lorde announces Australia-New Zealand Solar Power tour for 2022, release date for new album

By Áine Ryan | 3 years ago

Lorde is set to perform in Australia and New Zealand for the first time in five years.

The 'Green Light' singer, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, will kick off her Solar Power tour in New Zealand on February 27 next year before visiting Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. She will wrap up in Perth on Saturday, March 19. See the full dates below.

Lorde also announced in her newsletter that her next studio album will be released on August 20.

The announcement says Lorde will release it in "a first-of-its kind, discless format" to honour "the natural world." See the tracklist below.

Lorde teased an announcement earlier this week when she shared a mysterious video on her website showing her sitting cross-legged on the sand. The video was captioned "SOLSTICE", referring to the Winter-Summer Solstice (June 21 local time), and sent fans into a frenzy.

The Australian-New Zealand leg of the tour is part of this morning's global tour announcement, which includes stops across Europe, the United Kingdom and North America.

Tickets go on sale on Monday, July 5, but there will be a Frontier pre-sale on Wednesday, June 30.

Lorde announces Solar Power tour

The album and tour news comes just two weeks after the 24-year-old New Zealand-born singer dropped her single 'Solar Power' — her first release in four years and the first single from her upcoming album of the same name.

"The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I'm outdoors," Lorde said recently.

"In times of heartache, grief, deep love or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I've learnt to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through."

Lorde Announces ‘Solar Power’ Album & World Tour

lorde tour perth

Lorde lifted the lid on a whole lot of new moments ago.

For, after teasing an incoming announcement, the eclectic songbird has officially announced her album ‘Solar Polar’ and a like-titled 2022 world tour.

Full story below…

Named after her recently released comeback single of the same name, the LP will arrive on August 20.

Speaking on the project (which is exec produced by Jack Antonoff ), the 24-year-old said in a statement:

“The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalizing the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors. In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learned to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through.”  googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('primis_TGJ_1x1_Desk'); if (pubwise.enabled === true) { pwpbjs.que.push(function () { pwRegisterLazyLoad(gptadslots['primis_TGJ_1x1_Desk'], 2, [250,0,250,0], 0, 768, 2); }); }else{ googletag.pubads().refresh([gptadslots['primis_TGJ_1x1_Desk']]); } });

It’ll be supported by a global trek, which kicks off in her home country of New Zealand in February 2022 and makes major stops across Europe and the United States. She stresses that it’ll skew intimate and play to “theatres and green fields rather than arenas.”

The news was timed to coincide with the only solar eclipse of the year.

Update: Lorde adds special guests to postponed Australian Solar Power 2023 tour

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Not gonna lie: That her Lady Lorde-ness would be blessing us with a new live show in 2022 was something that really kept us all going through the thick of lockdowns and COVID isolation.

So, it's a bummer to hear that Lorde's Australian shows behind her sun-soaked, subdued third album Solar Power has been pushed back a year, into March 2023.

Update:  The special guets for Lorde's Aus tour have been announced.

Joining all East Coast shows will be MUNA, the US indie pop trio who are also headlining Sydney's WorldPride closing concert for their debut Australian visit.  Opening in Perth will be singer-songwriter (and current Double J Feature Album artist ) Laura Jean.

Related:  Lorde's Solar Power is a mellow detour from an artist that once defined a decade

“I am beyond devastated to be postponing these shows," Lorde said in a statement.

"I fought this decision for a long time, but the truth is that touring internationally through a COVID outbreak has a ton of unforeseen moving parts, and I’d much rather play for you when we’re all confident it will go smoothly."

"I want to apologise wholeheartedly to the fans. I’m so gutted to let you down, but so grateful for your understanding. We’ll rage next year.”

Promoters Frontier Touring explain the "difficult decision" to postpone the tour is "due to the continuing uncertainty around the current NZ outbreak. Both Australia and New Zealand's borders need to be "fully open to both citizens and non-citizens" and the complication is that Lorde's "entire crew and most of her band are international."

The silver lining is that additional shows have been added in Brisbane and Perth. Those tickets are available from Friday 19 November, 11am local time.

All tickets for the original dates will remain vaild, but those unable to attend can request for a full refund by Friday 10 December. View the rescheduled dates below. Australian dates in bold.

Featuring the singles ' Fallen Fruit ', ' Mood Ring' , ' Stoned At The Nail Salon ' and the title track , Solar Power debuted atop the ARIA Album Charts, continuing Lorde's #1 streak that began with her 2013 debut album Pure Heroine and continue with 2017's Melodrama.

In September, she released the companion EP TE AO MĀRAMA, which reworked five tracks in Te Reo Māori , the indigenous language of Aotearoa (New Zealand).

The Solar Power Tour

  • View history

The Solar Power Tour is the upcoming third tour by New Zealander singer-songwriter Lorde , in support of her third studio album Solar Power (2021). Set to begin in April 2022, the tour will play over 50 concerts in Australasia, North America, and Europe.

Background [ ]

The Primavera Sound setlist for their 2022 festival was revealed on 25 May 2021, which included Lorde as a headliner. The dates for the Solar Power Tour were announced alongside the tracklist and release date of Solar Power on 21 June 2021. Lorde offered presale tickets for her fans subscribed to her mailing list, with presale tickets available from 24 June 2021 in North America and Europe, and 30 June 2021 in Australia and New Zealand. The general sale opened in North America and Europe on 25 June 2021, and in Australia and New Zealand on 5 July 2021. Taranaki Daily News reported that prices for her concert in New Plymouthstarted from NZ$89.90 plus fees.

On 25 June 2021, after her two London shows sold out instantly, Lorde added two new dates in London, with a third show in the Roundhouse Theatre scheduled for 3 June 2022, and another performance to close out the tour on 28 June 2022 at Alexandra Palace. A second show was added in Šibenik on the same day, with Croatia Week reporting that tickets for her first show sold out in 3 seconds. Additional shows were also added in Toronto, Boston, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. On 1 July 2021, two additional shows were added in Australia, after "overwhelming demand", with one show each added in Melbourne and Sydney.

It was announced on 10 November 2021 that the Australasian leg of the Solar Power Tour would be postponed to 2023. Lorde said of the decision that "touring internationally through a Covid outbreak has a ton of unforeseen moving parts, and I'd much rather play for you when we're all confident it will go smoothly", and promoters Frontier Touring said that the tour was initially scheduled with the expectation that there would be no restrictions on quarantine and that the borders of Australia and New Zealand would be open to non-citizens. New shows in Lower Hutt, Brisbane, and Perth were also announced.
