Located across the river from Gonarezhou National Park lies Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge. The lodge has 10 Rooms nestled amongst the bush and are wonderfully intimate, featuring a private balcony and seating area that will make you feel like the only person for miles. Walking Safaris

Cultural Tours

The intimate working relationship between the lodge and the local Shangaan community makes a visit to Mahenye Village a rewarding and educational experience.

With over 400 bird species, including kingfishers, hornbills, eagles, and raptors, Gonarezhou is fantastic for birding.

Gonarezhou is part of the Great Limpopo Transfontier Park (made up of Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe) which means the Big Five and most big game is found here, though no rhino. All the big cats are available. This is a great park for sighting some rare antelopes, including nyala and suni. Other sighted antelopes include roan and sable. Cheetah is also said to be found here but sightings have been rare. Elephant, and buffalo populations are also in good concentration.

The Park is great for birding with over 400 species recorded.  Excellent time for birding here is November through to April when the migratory birds are present; although it’s still good throughout the year. Interestingly Narina trogons and Angola pittas are sighted here. Other key highlights are martial eagle, Pel’s fishing owl, African fish eagle, brown-headed parrot, and Lappet-faced vulture.

Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge

Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge

Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge: Our full report

Elevated atop a cliff, Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge has fantastic views over the Save River below and Ghonarezhou ...

  • Ten king-size or twin chalets are located at the main camp, each overlooking the river gorge from a private balcony with glazed doors. These split-level chalets are very comfortably furnished and decorated in the local Shangaan style, and are kitted out with en-suite showers, mosquito nets, tea- and coffee-making facilities and a minibar. On our last visit to Chilo Gorge we stayed in the ‘Hornbill Chalet’, with fantastic views onto the river and sandbank about 40 meters below. The chalets have an elevated bathroom behind the sunken bedroom. The toilet is situated in its own separate cubicle with a locking swing-door for added privacy. Complementary toiletries are provided, and on our last stay the high-pressure shower had plenty of hot water.
  • Four self-catering double chalets and a family chalet (sleeping up to six) are set in Nhambo Camp, a little way from the main area. This smaller enclave of Chilo Gorge includes its own plunge pool, barbecue area and kitchen, and is a good option for a family or group of friends looking for a more self-contained option. Guests may also head to the lodge for their meals while staying in these units; they don’t have to stay on a self-catering basis.
Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge has undergone a renaissance and is now a very smart, luxury safari lodge offering a great variety of activities and some fantastic guiding. The variety of activities here is of real appeal, and we particularly appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the very real challenges facing this area in the context of a remote wilderness experience.

Habitat & Wildlife Gonarezhou National Park, both beautiful and varied in terms of scenery, is situated on the south-eastern border of Zimbabwe and covers an area of 5000 square kilometres. The park is also part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a 35 million hectare cross-border initiative with the Kruger National Park in South Arica and Limpopo National Park in Mozambique. Gonarezhou means ‘place of the elephants’, and the area is excellent elephant country with over 8,000 of them.

The park has some stunning scenery, particularly the impressive red sandstone cliffs of Chilojo Cliffs overlooking the Runde River which carves its way impressively through the park. The habitat is diverse and ranges from riverine forest and wetlands to mopane woodland, granite hills and Cretaceous sandveld above the cliffs (a habitat much like the Kalahari). These different ecosystems mean that game viewing is very productive, and the park is home to lion, leopard, wild dog, cheetah, hyaena, buffalo, elephant, zebra, giraffe, kudu, nyala, impala, steenbok, blue wildebeest, hippo, crocodile, golden mole (sandveld), bushbuck, Sharpe’s grysbok, klipspringer, grey duiker, waterbuck, eland, roan, sable, caracal, bat eared fox, African wild cat, civet, porcupine, aardwolf and aardvark. However, this is a true wilderness area, and game is sometimes a little spread out and occasionally skittish. Bird life is also prolific with over 450 species recorded, including bat hawk, green malkoha, gorgeous bush shrike, narina trogon, Pel’s fishing owl and chestnut-fronted helmetshrike.

Activities Activities are varied and include game drives by day, full day drive to Chilojo Cliffs (between April and November and subject to water levels), morning and afternoon game walks, and hiking to Chivalila Falls. Cultural visits are also possible outside the park in the local community areas. Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge is also the base from which their excellent fly-camping adventure experiences (Ivory Trails) which are highly recommended for anyone that wants to truly delve into the wilderness off grid.

CONSERVATION & COMMUNITY

Chilo Gorge Lodge founder and director Clive Stockil has won numerous awards for his pioneering approach and commitment to community led conservation. The first CAMPFIRE programme (Communal Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources) in Zimbabwe was started here, and its principles have since been replicated across Africa and the rest of the world. The intimate working relationship between the lodge and the local Shangaan community makes a visit to Mahenye Village a rewarding and educational experience and learning about the impact of conservation tourism is part of guest experience at Chilo. Through this collaboration the village now has a clinic, schools and boreholes. The lodge supports a nutritional gardens initiative which allows the female farmers of Mahenye Village to grow vegetable gardens which supports food security in the community, while also having a market in supplying the lodge.

Chilo was involved in helping the establishment of the Jamanda Conservancy which ensure the peaceful coexistence between the local community of Mahenye and surrounding wildlife areas of Gonarezhou. The community has relinquished 120 square kilometres of their cattle grazing land, which is bordering Gonarezhou National Park for wildlife conservation and photographic safaris. The land has been protected with fences and anti-poaching patrols and today, wildlife roams freely in this conservancy, established by the community.

Chilo Gorge also works closely with the Gonarezhou Conservation Trust (a ground-breaking partnership between Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and Frankfurt Zoological Society) on regeneration and conservation of this wilderness area.

Chilo Gorge Lodge

Set on top of a substantial cliff above the Save River in the Gonarezhou area of southeast Zimbabwe, Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge is a decent mid-range option, with guest accommodation in 10 luxury rooms and offering a wide range of well-guided safari activities. No minimum age (12 for walking safari).

Chilo Gorge Lodge, Location

Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge is located in the Gonarezhou area.

Chilo Gorge Lodge, Location Image 1

Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge is located in the Gonarezhou area of southeast Zimbabwe.

At 5053 square kilometres, Gonarezhou National Park is the second largest reserve in Zimbabwe after Hwange National Park. It lies in the extreme southeast corner of the country, adjoining Mozambique and just north of the Kruger area of South Africa.

This area is very much off the usual routes, is relatively wild little-visited, making it something of a holy grail for safari aficionados.

The name Gonarezhou actually means 'Place of Elephants' in the local Shona language and this certainly is a haven for these peaceful creatures.

Other residents include elephants, giraffes, hippopotamuses, Cape buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, black and white rhinoceroses, lions, leopards, cheetahs and spotted hyenas.

Set on top of a substantial cliff above the Save River in the Gonarezhou area of southeast Zimbabwe, Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge is a decent mid-range option, with guest accommodation in ten luxury rooms and offering a wide range of well-guided safari activities.

Getting there

The property is usually accessed by scheduled light aircraft flight from Johannesburg into Buffalo Range International Airport, from where it is a road transfer of around 1 hour.

Alternatively it is possible to arrive by charter flight from a range of locations including Victoria Falls into Mahenye Airstrip, from where it is a vehicle safari of around 15 minutes.

The lodge also offers a road transfer from Harare, which takes around six hours and is charged by the vehicle rather than per passenger. The capacity of each vehicle is six guests, so the closer you are to that number, the more economical it becomes.

We usually include all necessary transport as part of your trip unless  you specifically ask us not to.

Chilo Gorge Lodge, Lodge

The lodge is centred on a substantial main building, leading out to a swimming pool area.

Chilo Gorge Lodge, Lodge Image 1

Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge is independently owned and operated, along with satellite property Chilo Gorge Tented Camp.

The lodge was founded by pioneering conservationist Clive Stockil, a Zimbabwean who has a long association with the reserve and remains very much a part of the operation here.

Way back in 1980 Clive was appointed an honorary officer of Gonarezhou National Park, which was in a sorry state, suffering terribly from poaching and encroachment. Over the years he worked with the notoriously independent Shangaan people to come up with a coordinated conservation plan which would benefit both wildlife and local people.

This program has been an extraordinary success story which has greatly restored the reserve to its natural state and led to Clive being honoured with the Prince William Award for Conservation in 2013.

Guest at the lodge should feel that they are very much a part of this conservation project.

Dining options

The food service at Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge is usually to a good standard.

Special diets such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher and other variations should not be a problem, so long as you let us know at the time of booking.

Power and connectivity

The property runs on generator power, with regular 230Vac electricity available 24 hours and there are no great restrictions on using higher power items such as hair dryers.

Power outlets are South African three pin format. Adaptors are usually available, but it is always worth bringing your own, in which case we recommend buying them in advance rather than trying to get them at the airport on the way, since they often run out.

WiFi is available, but connection speeds are likely to be slow and could be intermittent.

Remarkably there may be some mobile phone signal in this location.

Child policy

There is no minimum age at this property.

However the camp is not specifically geared up for children, is unfenced and could be potentially very dangerous. Adult supervision is essential at all times.

Although the staff and guides will naturally try to tailor the experience to suit all guests, there are no special facilities for children, who are obliged to behave with due consideration for other guests.

There is likely to be minimum age limits for more risky activities such as walking safari and canoe safari, most likely around 12 years, at the discretion of your guide.

Tipping guide

In Africa tipping is definitely not obligatory, but it is commonplace. If you feel that the service provided has been excellent, then you may consider giving tips as follows ...

Lead guide : USD 10 per guest per day Assistant guide or tracker : USD 5 per guest per day Camp staff : USD 5 per guest per day

Staff understand that guests of different nationalities come very different tipping cultures and adjust their expectations accordingly, so you really should tip as you feel comfortable.

Tips are usually given in cash, USD, EUR, GBP and ZAR being the most common currencies. If you are running short of cash or prefer not to carry so much currency, it is often possible to settle tips by bank card.

Chilo Gorge Lodge, Luxury Room

Guest accommodation is in ten Luxury Rooms with great views.

Chilo Gorge Lodge, Luxury Room Image 1

Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge has guest accommodation in a total of 15 rooms of various descriptions ...

Main Lodge Rooms : 10

At the main lodge itself there are ten rooms, each for two guests, all with private verandahs and superb views.

Self-catering Chalets : 4

A few hundred metres from the main area is Nhambo Camp, an almost separate property with its own plunge pool, barbecue area and kitchen. Here there are four chalets, each for two guests. Obviously the self-catering aspect is aimed more at local Zimbabweans and South Africans, international guests staying in these rooms usually take their meals at the main lodge.

Self-catering Family Chalet : 1

Also at Nhambo Camp, this unit has three bedrooms for up to six guests, perhaps best suited to two adults and four children. Again international guests staying in this room usually take their meals at the main lodge.

Chilo Gorge Lodge, Activities

Activities include vehicle safari, walking safari, motorboat safari and canoe safari.

Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge provides a good range of activities ...

Top quality safari guiding

The guiding team here is lead by local legend Clive Stockil himself, who has held an esteemed Zim-Pro license since 1973. He was born and bred in the area and really knowns the place like the back of his hand.

Clive is superbly assisted by Thomas Mutombeni and John Laing, who are also enormously experienced.

Vehicle safari

Vehicle safari is usually the best method for viewing wildlife in the bush. The majority of your up-close animal experiences are likely to come about in this way, since the animals are quite habituated to the presence of vehicles and do not feel threatened.

Probable sightings include leopards, lions, elephants, white rhinos, black rhinos, hippopotamuses, buffaloes and sable antelopes. Less frequent sightings include nyalas, wild dogs and cheetahs.

Night vehicle safari

On a night vehicle safari a guide or specialist spotter uses high-powered torches to find  animals.

It is a good chance to see some of the nocturnal animals in the area, including bush-babies, genets, civets and porcupines. If you are lucky, then you may catch up with lions, hyenas or leopards out hunting, which can be a truly extraordinary experience.

At this particular camp, night safari is usually only operated only for an hour or so on the way back to camp from sundowner drinks.

We would usually prefer to do a proper night drive after dinner, since we believe that this delivers a much better chance of properly following hunts. You can try asking whether this might be possible, but we expect that the local park rangers might not permit it.

Do bear in mind that a proper night drive can be a real hit or miss affair, they can be incredible, but they can also be incredibly tiresome. It's a gamble.

Walking safari

Walking safari in this particular area tends to be quite a gentle affair, tending to concentrate much more on the lesser flora and fauna, as well as the chance to learn a little bit about tracking and other bush skills.

We expect that these walks may well include deliberate approaches to potentially dangerous wildlife such as elephants and lions.

The terrain here is particularly interesting and there are some excellent longer hikes along the cliffs.

There is a six kilometre circular trail directly from the lodge which heads alond the escarpment to the beautiful Chivilia Falls area of the Save River.

Motorboat safari

The lodge has a motorboat for use on the Save River, but this is very much dependent on water levels and is only likely to be possible during the high water months of Jan-May.

Canoe Safari

Similarly the lodge maintains a number of canoes for use on the Save River. Due to the lower draft, the season may extend to July and beyond in years when the rains have been good.

The area also contains some impressive Bushman rock-art. The cliffs and rocky outcrops of the north provide lots of overhangs and shelters which these ancient people must have used as bases from which to head out on their hunting expeditions.

Community visits

The lodge is very much involved in local outreach projects and the owners feel strongly that any visit should be as much about the local community as it is about the beauty of the natural landscape and the animals.

Visitors can enjoy the riches of Shangaan culture, partake in the wisdom of ages, and witness firsthand the bright promise of a truly sustainable future.

In the local community of Mahenye the lodge has helped to build a school, clinic, police station and flour mill from income earned through tourism.

it may be possible to visit communities to learn more about the Shangaan culture and the way of life here in rural Zimbabwe. It is always nice to see first hand what a power for good tourism can be for local people.

If you are lucky enough to be here on the right dates in September you may be able to witness the annual Mahenye Festival, a glorious celebration of Shangaan culture, including traditional dancing, local food and drink and a time-honoured fish drive in the Save River.

Great Zimbabwe

Although the famous and important monuments of Great Zimbabwe are not exactly nearby, it is possible to visit on a day trip. This would perhaps be worth considering if you are staying for maybe six or more nights. Otherwise we would not generally recommend leaving the wildlife areas, since we find that it detracts significantly from the sense of wilderness.

Although Gonarezhou is a famously wild area, the lands which lie to the north and west contain some intense commercial agriculture. Whilst this may detract from the sense of wilderness, it does also offer the opportunity to visit one of the local estate golf courses, if you are so inclined.

Chilo Gorge Lodge, Vehicle Safari

The primary activity is vehicle safari.

Chilo Gorge Lodge, Vehicle Safari Image 1

The best time of year is the Jun-Sep dry season, although there are good reasons to visit during other months.

Chilo Gorge Lodge, Downsides

The main potential downsides are the dated lodge design, the difficult access, lesser wildlife especially during the Nov-May green season and high temperatures Oct-Dec.

Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge, like all properties, has a long list of potential downsides. Please do not be unnecessarily put off by this section. Our only intention in raising these issues is to ensure that you get to the best and most appropriate places and that your expectations are met and hopefully exceeded ...

High prices

The main problem with this property from most people's perspective are the very high prices during the main safari seasons.

Relative to other properties in this area, it is actually towards the middle of the range, but it remains a big sticker item.

Rates during low seasons may be considerably lower, so that may be worth considering. Check the seasonality section above for more details.

It is worth noting that there are sometimes long stay discounts available, as well as discounts for combining with other camps under the same ownership. Please ask us for more information.

Inconvenient access

Gonarezhou does not lie on the usual transport routes. Whilst it is vaguely possible to arrive by vehicle, it is far more common to arrive by either scheduled or charter flights, both of which are not necessarily too inconvenient, but which are definitely pricey.

Reduced sense of wilderness

Although Gonarezhou is a famously wild area, the lands which lie to the north and west contain some intense commercial agriculture. If you fly in via Buffalo Range Airport, then you will pass through these areas on the way in to the lodge, which will considerably detract from the sense of pure wilderness. But rest assured, there are some vast tracts of wilderness beyond.

Lodge notes

By modern standards Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge is very heavily built and rather dated. It is all perfectly decent, but there is definitely a sense of the old Zimbabwe, for better or worse.

Shared safari

In this camp separate groups of guests are often obliged to join together when out on safari. This is not necessarily a negative, sometimes it can be a great chance to get to meet some very interesting people and the best camp managers usually work hard to ensure guest compatibility. But some guests do find it to be a considerable negative.

The issue can be officially side-stepped by paying a private safari supplement, but this bumps the cost considerably.

Weaker wildlife

It is important to realise that the wildlife viewing in Gonarezhou is nowhere near as easy or prolific as better known safari areas like Kruger or the Okavango Delta.

For a start the terrain does not lend itself to high densities of wildlife, the soils are not rich like the Serengeti and the forested hills do not provide the best grazing.

Also this area is a good deal more wild, so the animals are much less accustomed to people and vehicles, which can make them much more tricky to approach.

There are plenty of animals around to make a good safari, but overall we would say that this area is better suited to a more experienced safari traveller who is less worried about prolific sightings.

Weaker green season wildlife

During the Nov-Apr green season the wildlife viewing in this area is likely to be significantly weaker, as the rains fill seasonal pans, enabling the animals to disperse. The increase in foliage and grass cover also makes finding the animals a good deal more challenging.

The price of the camp is reduced during this time by way of compensation and the experience here can still be strong, with the bush being full of flowers and baby animals.

But the core wildlife interaction is likely to be significantly reduced.

Adverse weather

There is the potential for significant rainfall during the Nov-Apr period, usually centred on Jan-Feb, which can severly hamper safari activities.

During this period options such as Madikwe, Makgadikgadi, Serengeti and even the Eastern Cape and Western Cape become relatively more attractive.

There can be extremely high temperatures during Oct-Dec, but this is offset by the fact that most of the lodges have air-conditioning.

The very low temperatures at night during May-Jul tend to be much less of an issue, although night vehicle safari can become wretched and getting out of bed early in the morning quite a challenge.

Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge

Gonarezhou National Park, Zimbabwe

Chilo Gorge is a luxury safari lodge on the edge of the stunning wilderness of Gonarezhou National Park, in South-East Zimbabwe. We offer guests access to the pristine wilderness of Gonarezhou, with the authentic animal interaction which goes with a park which is rarely visited.

Gonarezhou is a gem among African parks which offers experienced safari travelers an increasingly rare ability to explore untouched Africa. In addition, through the work of Chilo director, Clive Stockil, there is a very powerful community and conservation story which is at the heart of why the lodge was built and how it operates.

  • Accommodation

When Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge was built, we brought the outside in. Each of the 10 chalets are spacious, simple, and elegant, providing all the comforts of home. A handsome palette of natural materials creates a haven from the heat of the day, a place to rest and recoup, and to prepare for your next big adventure.

Chilo's all-inclusive luxury chalets sleep two, and come with a spacious en-suite bathroom complete with complimentary toiletries. A private balcony and seating area commands superior views, offering a serene space to unwind after a lively day. Other amenities include a mini bar, tea and coffee facilities, and a safe. One option for families is the two luxury rooms with an extended interconnecting balcony, which provides easy private access between the rooms for all the family.

The beautiful main lodge built from stone, thatch, ancient teak and leadwood has everything you need; a shaded swimming pool, upstairs viewing area, seating area and library, an inviting bar and dining room, as well as outside dining areas, all surrounded by beautifully tended gardens. Even here, at the heart of Chilo, the great African wilderness is never far away. You can watch elephants, hippos and crocodiles cooling off in the waters of the river from the viewing deck, as well as a variety of other wildlife which may come and go throughout the day to drink.

Whether it’s exhilarating game drives through the park, excursions to the epic Chilojo Cliffs, or a day spent birdwatching, we have a wide range of activities to suit every guest. When the day is done and you’ve enjoyed sundowners on the Save River, filled page after page of your journal around the campfire, or spent a day with the people of Mahenye Village, sleep will come easy. You know when you wake, it will be there waiting for you, all over again.

Or for those with a penchant for something a bit more active and adventurous, Gonarezhou is a great destination for game walks. There is also the 3km hiking trail from the lodge to the beautiful Chivilia Falls is a great way to start or end your day. Trekking through a rugged landscape will lead you to a viewpoint overlooking the falls. As the water cascades over age-old rocks, take in the sights and satisfy your thirst with some well deserved refreshments.

The intimate working relationship between the lodge and the local Shangaan community makes a visit to Mahenye Village a rewarding and educational experience. The Cultural home, built with funds raised by Chilo, provides insight into Shangaan society. At the annual Mahenye Festival, taking place in September, you get a chance to witness a celebration of Shangaan culture, including traditional dancing, local food and drink, and the time-honored fish drive in the Save River.

  • Accommodation , Gonarezhou , Zimbabwe

Chilo Gorge is located in the south-east of Zimbabwe, on the boundary of one of our most remote National Parks, Gonarezhou. The 5,035 km² Gonarezhou National Park is the second largest national park in Zimbabwe, and was established in 1934 as a Game Reserve and proclaimed as a national park in 1975. Access to Chilo is either by self drive or road transfers from Harare, Bulawayo, Masvingo and Chiredzi Towns, or private air charter to their airstrip – MAHYENE – LAT-LON-S 21’13.816 – E 032’20.010.

One of the directors and part owner of Chilo is Clive Stockil, who grew up among the Shangaan tribe, and, with the community, he has created a unique environment where local cultures, wildlife and responsible tourism are all able to thrive and enrich one another. The local community at Mahenye Village have built a school, clinic and mill from income earned through tourism.

Karoo Lodge

Why this inspires us, lodge information, rates and specials, child policy, need to know, why this inspires us.

  • Karoo Lodge is a charming and peaceful retreat located in the beautiful Karoo region. Nestled within a natural amphitheatre of mountains and spanning acres of Great Karoo terrain, this lodge offers breathtaking panoramic vistas and a serene atmosphere amidst the wilderness!
  • Being greeted by the Samara family to us makes the day with warm smiles, welcoming energies, and attentive staff (exceptional hospitality indeed!);  as well as the opportunity to explore the stunning indigenous gardens and magnificent trees (even their own veggie garden!) – What stands out immediately is the attention to detail.
  • Karoo Lodge offers a unique blend of colonial comforts and rustic charm, creating a welcoming atmosphere for you to unwind and enjoy exceptional service. The tranquil ambiance of the Karoo surrounds you, whether you choose to relax on the spacious verandah during summer or cozy up to the fire during winter.
  • All 10 suites of varying sizes are beautifully decorated in an old world Karoo farm chic style, and you can indulge in the luxury of sitting on the large stoep, sipping a chilled glass of wine while taking in the traditional Karoo sights and sounds!
  • At African Inspired Safaris, we are passionate about adventures – one being sleeping under the stars!  The Samara star bed located on the Milk River, promises to transport you to a world of unparalleled romance that will leave you breathless! (Imagine drifting off to sleep under a canopy of twinkling stars and awakening to the sounds of chirping birds and endless skies)
  • The different outdoor dining experience that Samara is renowned for thrill us to come back for more! From dining under the stars, indulging in a picnic by the river, or enjoying lunch on the mountaintop. (absolutely spectacular!)
  • We love the fact that this reserve is family-owned and run – with a mission to revive the land to its pre-farming state, reintroduce the abundance of animals that once roamed the property, (such as the massive migration of millions of springbok) and offer you an authentic African wildlife encounter. The reserve is passionately devoted to conservation and safeguarding the plants and animals that inhabit this region.
  • Samara Karoo Reserve is proud to offer the opportunity to witness the elusive Aardvark during their night drives, which makes it one of the few places in South Africa where you can catch a glimpse of this fascinating creature!
  • To top it off, the ultimate thrill at Samara is tracking cheetahs on foot!  You have the opportunity to disembark from your  game vehicle and walk among these majestic cats, who may be lounging under a bush or shepherd tree.

Lodge Information

Encircled by a natural amphitheatre of mountains, Karoo Lodge sits in complete serenity with its wild surroundings. The lovingly renovated farmhouse lies on the first property purchased by Samara’s founders in 1997.

Combining modern day comforts with a rustic and welcoming feel, Karoo Lodge is the perfect place to relax and allow the tranquillity of the Karoo to envelop you – on the wide verandah in summer or by the cosy fire in winter.

With 10 suites of varying sizes – from 15 December 2023, Karoo Lodge caters for individual travellers, couples, families and small groups. Antiques, family heirlooms and vintage books permeate the décor throughout. Karoo Lodge offers a warm and inviting living room with a fireplace as well as a cosy bar area. There is a small TV area off the bar.

Karoo Suites Eight Karoo Suites are standalone luxury cottages located a short distance from the main Karoo Lodge Homestead. Ideal for couples, each Karoo suite contains a bedroom with four-poster bed, seating area, fireplace, air-conditioning. The en-suite bathroom contains a large separate bath and shower and two washbasins, as well as an outdoor shower.

A private covered patio with outdoor seating looks out over the spectacular mountain landscape, providing the ideal location for morning coffee or a nightcap under the stars.

Each Karoo Suite can accommodate up to 2 adults. A limited number of Karoo Suites can also accommodate 1 child under the age of 12 on an extra single bed.

Two Karoo Family Suites are standalone cottages located in the grounds of the main Karoo Lodge homestead. Ideal for families or two couples traveling together, each Karoo Family Suite comprises two spacious en-suite bedrooms linked by a communal living area with fireplace and air-conditioning. Each bathroom contains a large separate bath and shower. The rooms share a private covered patio with outdoor seating looking out over the serene Karoo landscape.

Each Karoo Family Suite can accommodate up to 4 adults plus 1 child under the age of 12 on an extra single bed in the communal living area.

A large dining room with a fireplace is used for indoor crystal dinners. When the weather is clement, candlelit dinners are set up on the verandah, on the lawn under the stars, or in the boma, a traditional reed enclosure warmed by a roaring fire.

All food at Samara comes from their Karoo Kitchen, which delivers lovingly-prepared fare rustled up by their local chefs. Their cuisine embraces South African classics with a Karoo twist, designed to create comforting aromas harking back to a simple farm lifestyle with locally-sourced ingredients. Favourites include their famous Karoo lamb burger with agave buds, roosterkoek (Afrikaans for ‘grilled bread’) and homemade pickles.

All food is grown or purchased locally. The Karoo is well-known for its excellent lamb and they support local farmers through the butcheries they purchase from. They also have a herb garden and vegetable garden on the reserve, as well as their own regeneratively-farmed lamb and beef.

With 67,000 acres of wilderness at your disposal, there are many ways to enjoy Samara, whatever the type of holiday you are planning. From romantic getaways to child-friendly safaris, adventure travel to milestone celebrations, Samara has something for everyone.

Those with an interest in conservation can also choose to combine their luxury getaway with conservation activities during their stay. Of course, if the pure Karoo air and serenity of our lodges compels you to simply relax and recharge by the pool, you’ll have no less of an enjoyable time.

Early morning and late-night game drives are available for visitors staying at Samara Karoo Reserve while on safari in South Africa. Private vehicles can be pre-booked, subject to availability & at an extra cost.  Learn about the semi-desert area’s terrain, soil, plants, rocks, and all the African fauna that inhabits it.

Child policy, karoo lodge.

Karoo Lodge welcomes guests of all ages. However, for those under 8 years old, scheduled game drives with other guests are not an option. Instead, families with younger children can enjoy shorter, mid-morning "bumble" drives, which are arranged once the regular game drives have concluded. Additionally, a children's programme and access to the Cubs' Den are available for kids of all ages. For families desiring a more personalized experience, a private vehicle can be arranged in advance, subject to availability and at an additional cost.

At The Manor, families with children of any age are welcome to stay when the entire villa is booked exclusively. In this case, a personalized program of activities will be tailored for you by your private guide.

If you book a Manor Suite on a shared-use basis, children under the age of 12 are not allowed to stay. Additionally, the policy does not allow for three or more adults to share a single room.

Plains Camp

Due to the unique setup of Plains Camp as an unfenced, explorer-style camp concentrating on bush walks and wildlife tracking in an area with the Big Five, it is not suitable for children under 16 years of age. Additionally, the tents at Plains Camp cannot accommodate more than two adults, as sharing with three or more adults is not permitted.

The Details

Samara Karoo Reserve offers three distinct accommodation types, each offering a unique experience in the heart of the South African wilderness.

Set amidst a natural mountain amphitheatre, this beautifully restored farmstead merges seamlessly with the serene, wild landscape. Karoo Lodge will offer 10 suites capable of accommodating up to 24 guests. It's an ideal choice for those seeking a tranquil and authentic Karoo experience. It comprises 4 suites, accommodating up to 8 guests, and requires a minimum stay of two nights. The Manor is perfect for guests looking for an exclusive and upscale retreat in the wilderness.

In search of adventure closer to nature? Plains Camp offers an explorer-style experience reminiscent of mobile safaris, where 'wildness as luxury' is the theme. This off-grid safari camp focuses on walking safaris and reconnecting with nature, offering 4 tented suites for up to 8 guests, also with a minimum stay of two nights. Plains Camp is ideal for guests eager to immerse themselves in the raw beauty of the Karoo while enjoying elegant simplicity.

So far, great service
This review is for the booking only as we have not taken our trip yet. Safari expert Sara Van Coille has been great to work with. We booked later than we planned and she was able to come up with an itinerary that was perfect for our group. Sara has responded to all our questions and was very quick to get back to me. From our experience so far, we would definitely recommend Safari.com

Anja is awesome!
Anja is awesome!! She went above and beyond for me as I had several changes until I locked in my bucket list itinerary and then my friend cancelled. She wasn't mad and just went about cancelling her portion which saved me money in the long run. Anja is a true professional regardless and I have been dealing with her since Sept 2023. Cannot wait until my trip in Sept 2024.

Shann was beyond amazing
Shann was beyond amazing. Listened to our needs, communicated super-efficiently and gave really honest excellent advice. She was so patient, kind and professional. The time difference across the globe made no difference. I am so excited for the itinerary she has put together. I usually cobble my own itinerary together for our holidays and it’s so time consuming and hard work. This was a piece of cake! Thank you Shann.
Great planning and service
Great planning and service, and everything worked like clockwork. We booked an Inyari Lodge safari with air with Safari.com. it wasn't clear if there will be 2 or three of us, so with Candis' help we booked a family chalet for 2 and added the third later when it was confirmed he can come. Candis put us on flights that maximized our game drive time (unlike some of the other guests) so we got all 6 drives in 3 nights. The lodge was great. Especially the game drives. We saw more than we hoped for. Additionally, Safari.com's insurance was very competitive. Highly recommended.

Fantastic travel agent for African safari family trip!
Wow! Shann was and is fantastic! She figured out a way to make our entire trip work. We are going on a 2 week trip to South Africa and Botswana. She really helped tie it all together as a wonderful, cohesive trip. She is super nice and super smart and very knowledgeable. She is also flexible and thoughtful, etc., etc. When the chips were down (and we literally were considering pulling the plug on the whole trip), she found a way to make the entire itinerary work and got us excited about our wonderful adventure! Highly recommend!

Welcome to Samara

Journey with purpose

Award-winning Samara Karoo Reserve is a conservation journey on 67,000 acres of born-again wilderness in South Africa’s heart-stoppingly beautiful Great Karoo region. Founded in 1997, Samara has pioneered the rewilding of this semi-arid yet uniquely biodiverse landscape, catalysing an ambitious vision to expand the conservation estate to a 3-million-acre footprint in a Global Biodiversity Hotspot.

Today the reserve is one of South Africa’s most diverse safari destinations, comprising five vegetation biomes across strikingly varied topography, home to over 60 mammal species including the Big Five and cheetah, as well as 225 bird species. Three intimate lodges welcome guests for considered, meaningful and exceptional safari encounters.
