This wonderful tour includes stunning scenery, the beautiful azure crystal clear sea, ancient towns and insight into an islands rich culture and heritage. We start our day with a visit to the south of the island and the beautiful Wied iz-Zurrieq, famous for the magnificent Blue Grotto. This tiny hamlet sits in a valley and has a very picturesque harbour. The grotto and neighbouring system of sea caves are home to brilliant phosphorescent marine life. The 25-minute boat trip explores the incredible beauty of this natural wonder and is a "must-do". This optional boat trip is only eur10 adults, eur5 for children. As you travel during the next part of this tour, your guide will explain the importance of the Girgenti Valley. Girgenti is a shaded fertile valley renowned for its orchards and cultivated fields. The eco system here is maquis, so it is green all year round. Citrus and other fruit trees thrive in the valley beneath the surrounding ridge. The old picturesque farmsteads are the homes of the local farming community who still work the fields and cultivate the orchards. On a spur overlooking the valley stands the summer palace of the Inquisitors built by Monsignor Visconti in 1625. Nowadays it is the official residence of our Prime Minister. Our journey via Girgenti will take us the west cost of the island. Stretching for some 4km along the west coast are the Dingli Cliffs. These cliffs have vertical or near-vertical rock faces rising from the sea to heights of up to 200m above sea level. Some of the steep slopes are terraced and this unique feature together with the expanse of the deep blue Mediterranean sea provide stunning views. Here will stop at the small 18th-century chapel which sits on the cliffs for a superb view and an ideal photo opportunity. Our next stop will take you back in time and we start with the old town of Rabat. This charming town has strong ties with the Roman era and the visit of St. Paul AD60. Here we will take a short stroll from the central piazza through the quaint streets, where you can admire the old houses, alleys, traditional balconies amongst other typical old town characteristics. Our historical walk continues to what we consider as our 'pride and joy', the fairy tale city of Mdina. Mdina which is a medieval city Mdina is built on a plateau in the centre of the island, the city's old Baroque buildings, Cathedral and magnificent bastion walls dominate the rural skyline. Mdina, once the capital of Malta until the modern city of Valletta was built had many names including Melite (Roman occupation), Medina (Arabic occupation), Citta Notabile (Knights of St. John) and Citta Vecchia (after Valletta was built). Today it is also referred to as the Silent City since it inspires tranquillity at any time of the day or night. The only way to really experience and enjoy this city is on foot, explore the quaint alleys, narrow streets, ancient buildings and magnificent far-reaching views from the high bastion walls. At this stage, our tour comes to an end and we make our way back to the cruise terminal and Valletta. OPTION If you would like to do a longer tour, you can add Birgu to this tour. Game of Thrones & Movie Tour (SE7)

Game of Thrones & Movie Tour (SE7)

Malta is often dubbed as “Hollywood in the Mediterranean”. The islands’ beautiful, unspoiled coastlines and breath-taking architecture have ‘doubled’ for an amazing variety of locations on the big and small screens – from ancient Rome to 19thcentury Marseille and 1960’s Beirut. Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, Wolfgang Petersen, Guy Ritchie and other renowned directors, as well as a host of celebrities such as Russell Crowe, Brad Pitt, Sharon Stone, Madonna, Sean Connery and many more have all experienced movie making in Malta. We start our tour at Upper Barraka Gardens in Valletta which offers the perfect platform to view the filming locations around the harbour and the streets of Valletta. Here your guide will point our the prime spots, relating them to movies such as Count of Monte Kristo, World War Z, Gladiator, Troy, Munich and the most recent, Jurassic World Dominion. All amazing blockbusters filmed in part or in full, right here in Malta.  We then move to central Malta for a visit to the beautiful medieval city of Mdina. This city was extensively featured in Game of Thrones as KINGS LANDING, amongst many other scenes including Littlefinger's brothel which was located in one of the piazza's. Here we will enjoy a walking tour around this stunning old medieval city with its beautiful sandstone buildings and charming narrow alleys. During this tour, you will have ample opportunity to pose at the sites and take lots of memorable photos to show off to your family and friends back home!

An insight into an era dominated by Neolithic man on a tour that will unfold our ancient history dating back a staggering 5000years. We start our visiting the Hagar Qim Temple Complex which includes Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples. Before entering the temples we start at the new visitors centre which will help you understand how these magnificent temples were built over 5000 years ago! We then continue with a tour to the Hagar Qim Temple. This temple has the largest and heaviest megaliths out of all the temple sites around the Maltese Islands, some slabs weighing a staggering 20 tons. Also forming part of this temple complex is the Mnajdra Temple which lies tucked on a slope in the cliffs, overlooking the tiny isle of Filfla. This site is probably the most atmospheric of all Malta's temples and during the Equinox, on the 20th March and the 22nd September, the rays of the sun pass directly through the temple's main doorway and light up the main axis. The rays of the sun during the Solstices light up the summer table and the winter table alternately. The second part of our tour includes a visit to the Ghar Dalam Cave. The Ghar Dalam Cave is a highly important site as it was here that the earliest evidence of human settlement on Malta, some 7,000 years ago, was discovered. This huge cavern is 144 metres deep, but only the first 80 metres are accessible. The lowermost layers date back to the Pleistocene Age (180,00 years ago) and to the end of the last Ice Age (16,000 years ago) and contained the fossilised bones of dwarf elephants, hippopotami, red deer, bear, fox, wolf, micro-mammals and birds. At this stage, our tour comes to an end and we make our back to the cruise terminal and Valletta.

If you would like to change something in the itinerary include these details in your enquiry.

Malta’s ancient past has deep Jewish roots, and the history of Jews in Malta spans two millennia. Ancient Jewish tombs in Rabat testify to the existence in Roman times of a flourishing Jewish community on the island in the 4th and 5th centuries. We will start our tour at St. Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat, where you can see tombs that also contain impressive engravings of a Menorah. Following our visit to the catacombs, we will take a short 10 minute walk from Rabat piazza, through the quaint streets, where you can admire the old houses, alleys, traditional balconies amongst other typical old town characteristics. Our walk will bring us to the walled city of Mdina. Mdina was the medieval capital during the Arab and Norman periods when the Jewish community prospered. In fact, the Jews made up one-third of the population in Mdina, and they lived side-by-side with Christians, in their own Jewish Quarter. During our walking tour of Mdina we will point out signs in Hebrew, such as ‘Old Jewish Silk Market’ attesting to the importance of Jews in the city’s economy and identifying the site where the synagogue was. You will also visit other parts of this beautiful old city during our walking tour and admire the stunning view from the high bastion walls.  Our final stop on this tour will be in Valletta. We will drive along the perimeter of the city and an important Jewish historical landmark, the Jews Sally Port. During the times of the Order of St. John between 1530 and 1798, it was only through this gate that free Jews arriving in Malta were allowed to enter the city. At this stage, our tour comes to an end and we make our way back to the cruise terminal.

Our final stop in the morning is the stunning Blue Grotto. Here you can take a 25-minute boat trip that explores the incredible beauty of this natural wonder and is a "must-do" during this tour. The grotto and neighbouring system of sea caves are home to brilliant phosphorescent marine life, as you enter the caves the clarity of the azure sea is simply amazing. Our transport will then return us back to the harbour area and to Valletta. At this stage we say farewell to our driver, Valletta can only be explored on foot. We enter the city passing the Tritons fountain and a walk along the main thoroughfare, the guide will point out our parliament, the old Royal Opera House besides other interesting buildings as we pass by. At this stage, we will stop for a lunch/snack break. After lunch, we continue our tour of the city which will include visits to George's Square which is adorned by the imposing Grand Masters Palace (external viewing only). Proceeding along Republic Street, our next stop is the amazing St. John's Co. Cathedral (internal visit), which is home to Caravaggio's masterpiece "The Beheading of St. John." This Cathedral was the conventual church of the Order of St. John, otherwise known as the Knights of St. John. In fact, most of the city was built by the Knights'. They were the planners of the auberges, palaces and the magnificent fortifications that you can still see today. The final part of our walking tour includes Merchants Street, along here there are many interesting buildings and our guide will point out some of the most important, 'MUZA' (the new Museum of Fine Arts) and the imposing Auberge de Castille, nowadays the office our Prime Minister. We end our tour at the Upper Barraka Gardens and not only are these gardens beautiful but the view of the stunning Grand Harbour is a memorable one, it unfolds beneath you as you make your way to the viewing balcony, a perfect way to end our tour. A trip from the gardens with the panoramic lift will take us back down to sea level and then we end with a short 6-minute walk to the cruise terminal. Please note  The order in which we operate the tour may differ as mentioned above. St. John's Co. Cathedral does not open on Saturday afternoons, Sunday's and Public Holiday's. This will be replaced with an alternative site such as the Grand Master's Palace, Archaeology Museum or Malta 5D Show.

The ecosystem here is maquis, so it is green all year round. Our journey via Girgenti will take us to the west coast of the island. Our transport will then return us back to the harbour area and to the old maritime city of Birgu. At this stage we say farewell to our driver, Birgu can only be explored on foot and we will be returning back to the Valletta cruise terminal by ferry. Before we continue you will have some free time Birgu centre for a lunch/snack break. Birgu (Vittoriosa) forms part of what is known as the 'Three Cities' which also includes Cospicua and Senglea. In 1532 the Knights of St. John first settled in this area, and we will give you an insight into an era dominated by the Knights of St. John. Our walking tour will take us to the heart of the city, the narrow streets and quaint alleys known as the 'collacchio', an area of old Palazzo's which were the original Auberges occupied by the Knights'. Our tour will gradually make its way down to the waterfront which in the past was occupied by the beautiful galleys, nowadays occupied by magnificent yachts. You will have some free time for photos, the views are amazing spanning the most beautiful of the Grand Harbour with Valletta on the opposite side. We return back to the Valletta cruise terminal by ferry. This short 10-minute crossing will take us through the beautiful yacht marina, past the imposing Fort St. Angelo on one side and the maritime fortified city of Senglea on the other. On arrival in Valletta, the cruise terminal is only a 6-minute walk away.

Planning Your Tour

There is so much to see and do in Malta and Gozo that for most it can be quite overwhelming deciding what to do and how to do it. Don't worry about this, I will assist you until you are 100% satisfied with your tour arrangements. If you are visiting Malta for one day only I suggest that you consider one of our  classic   itineraries  such as the Valletta, Mdina and Hagar Qim Temples tour. This itinerary is by far the most popular due to the diverse content which includes three important eras of our island's golden history. On the other hand you may have a specific interest such as Christianity, Archaeology,  Order of St. John ,  Movies  etc... which can be included in a customised itinerary designed just for you. If you are visiting our islands for a few days or a week you have the time to plan your touring over a number of days. I suggest that you browse through the  classic  and special interest tours, also check out my suggested multi day tours and you should then have a good idea of what you want to include. Contact me with your request and we can fine tune your itinerary together. Get in touch with me as soon as you are ready to start planning your visit to Malta! Don't leave it to the last minute because the chances are I will be booked out!  Click here  for my contact details. How to Book/Make an Enquiry Because private and customized tours are different for all clients, it is not possible to provide a standard 'one fits all' booking solution. If you want a customized itinerary, the procedure is a little different.  Click here to access the Customize Your Own Tour enquiry form. Itinerary for 7 Days in Malta

The tiny, Mediterranean island of Malta is a very underrated destination! Malta is full of history and rich in culture and given its size is a super easy country to explore. This post covers how to spend 7 days in Malta.

Table of contents

Notes on the itinerary, how to get around in malta, where to stay, day 1 – explore valletta, day 2 – valletta and the three cities, day 3 – gozo and comino, day 4 – beaches and sites in the north, day 6 – mdina and rabat, day 7 – marsaxlokk and sliema, st. julian.

  • Malta is a tiny country and you can get from one corner to the other relatively fast
  • We stayed in Sliema and loved it!
  • For example, you can explore the Blue Grotto described on day 5 and Marsaxlokk from day 7 on the same day
  • The only day that needs to be fixed are the attractions and places to see on day 3 (more below)
  • This is especially true if you rent a car

Malta has a very good public bus system that takes you across the Island including to almost all of the tourist attractions. However, if you want to save time, I highly recommend hiring a car. Note that Malta drives on the left hand side of the road with the drivers seat on the right side of the car.

Malta also has a very good and punctual ferry system between Valletta and the neighboring cities like Sliema and the Three Cities.

As I mentioned in the notes section, we stayed in Sliema which was a great option for us! We were close to Valletta and the ferry station. Sliema also had ample parking and a fantastic selection of restuarants and bars.

Side Note – Happy Hours in Malta cannot be beat!

7 Days in Malta

Start your 7 days in Malta in its capital Valletta. Valletta is the southern most capital of Europe. This walled city was established by the Knights of St. John back in the 1500s and is a must see place in Malta.

You probably need a little over 1 day to explore Valletta. See HERE for my post on the best things to do in Valletta.

Places Not to Miss

  • Republic Street and Merchant Street
  • St. John’s Co-Cathedral
  • Barrakka Gardens
  • Barrakka Lift
  • Grandmaster’s Palace
  • Wander around

malta short tours

Start day 2 of this 7 days in Malta itinerary exploring any parts of Valletta you could not on day 1 and then take a ferry or private boat over to the Three Cities.

The Three Cities of Vittoriosa ( Il-Birgu ) , Senglea ( L-Isla ), and Cospicua ( Bormla ) are some of Malta’s oldest cities. Vittoriosa goes all the way back to the middle ages!

  • Waterfront of Senglea
  • Gardjola Gardens
  • Fort St. Angelo
  • Waterfront of Vittoriosa
  • Inquisitor’s Palace

7 Days in Malta

Malta is actually made up of 3 islands. The main island, Gozo and Comino. Gozo and Comino are on the North side and are islands that make up the archipelago of Malta.

  • Cittadella in Victoria
  • Church of St. John the Baptist
  • Azure Window (The site of the wedding of Khal Drogo and Daenerys in Game of Thrones)
  • Dwejra Area

7 Days in Malta

How to get to Gozo and Comino

If you are taking your car, then you need to drive to the Gozo Channel Ferry which is a passenger and vehicle ferry. The ferry departs from Ċirkewwa in the main island of Malta.

If you are not taking a car then you can take one of the Gozo passenger ferries from Valletta offered by Gozo Fast Ferries and Virtu Gozo Ferries. The trip takes around 45 minutes. Once you get to Gozo, you can use the public bus system to get around.

To get to Comino you will have to catch a ferry to Comino from Gozo (passenger only, no vehicles) or a private boat tour. We did the private boat tour and it was great because they also took us to see the caves as well. You can get both option from the Mġarr Harbor. If you brought your car over to Gozo, you will have to park it at Gozo before heading out to Comino.

You can also visit Gozo and Comino on a tour like this one.

Notes on Day 3

In order to save travel time, visit Gozo and Comino on the same day or on two consecutive days

If you are a beach lover, you may want to spend more time Comino and therefore may want to spend more than one day in this area. This is easy to accomplish! Simply consolidate places to see from days 4,5,6 and 7 into 3 days instead of 4.

Spend day 4 of your 7 days in Malta exploring the beaches and sites in the North of the country. If you stay overnight in Gozo, then you can explore this area on your way back from your overnight in Gozo. If you do not stay overnight, you can still easily get to this area as it only takes around 30 minutes to get to this area from Sliema.

  • Popeye’s Village – film set turned amusement park
  • Għadira Bay – enjoy lunch on this bay
  • Paradise Bay – spend some time relaxing at Paradise Bay
  • Golden Bay – Golden Bay is an awesome location to watch the sunset

7 Days in Malta

Day 5 – Blue Grotto Area

Visit one of Malta’s most iconic sites as well as some of its historical sites on day 5 of this 7 days in Malta itinerary.

One of Malta’s most famous attractions is the Blue Grotto. The best time to visit the Blue Grotto is during the morning to mid afternoon hours. But note that boats do not go out when the sea is rough or wind conditions are bad (unfortunately what happened to us). Good news is that you don’t need to book a tour in advance. Just show up and hop on a boat. The tour lasts about 20 minutes. Don’t also miss a place called “Panorama Point” on the way to the boat station.

7 Days in Malta

Malta has several pre-historic temples built during 3600 BC and 2500 BC. Below is a list of these temples.

We visited Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra. These are located very close to the Blue Grotto so suggest coupling these with the Blue Grotto. The oldest temple is Ġgantija which is located in Gozo and can be easily seen on your trip to the island.

  • Ta’ Hagrat

malta short tours

Don’t miss visiting Mdina and Rabat on your trip to Malta! Mdina is a world heritage site and used to be Malta’s capital city until the Knight arrived in Malta in the 1500s. This city is also called the silent city as you cannot take your car beyond the city gates. Rabat, a small village just outside Mdina can also be explored on the same day.

  • Gates of Mdina
  • St. Paul’s Cathedral
  • Palazzo Falson
  • Church of St. Paul and Catacombs

malta short tours

Start your last day of your 7 days in Malta exploring Xrobb l-Ghagin Nature Park. There are some walking paths you can hike alongside the cliffs. You can also visit St. Peter’s pool for a dip before heading to Marsaxlokk for lunch. There are lots of seafood restaurants along the bay in Marsaxlokk.

After lunch, head back to Sliema and stroll along the waterfront. It was a good viewpoint of the city of Valletta. Then, head to St. Julian in the evening for drinks.

Malta is GMT + 1h during Standard Time and + 2h during Daylight Saving months

Malta's climate is typically Mediterranean. Summer is hot and dry with temperatures reaching 32 °C in July and August. Winter is mild and wet, and temperatures only dropping to around 15 - 17 °C during December to February.

Malta is a small country in the middle of the ocean, meaning even if you're inland it's almost always breezy - so we always recommend layers, even in summer time.

As with many of tours - there is a lot to see and walking will play quite a part in that - so bring comfortable shoes!

View of Paola City from Valletta Waterfront with boats in the harbour on a sunny day in Malta

Floating smack-bang and isolated in the middle of the shimmering Mediterranean Sea, minuscule Malta trots along to a charmingly laid back pace.

A consortium of 3 bite-sized islands containing countless blue water lagoons backed by stunning surrounds, the country presents a beguiling mish-mash of Arabic and European languages, architecture, cuisine and traditions - the legacy of having been alternately raided, invaded, or occupied by virtually every Western power to have attained conquering capacities over the past 2,000 years. Little wonder then that the locals are so versed in sharing their island’s spoils with the latest foreign hordes to reach their shores.

Best time to visit malta.

Malta’s summer season - stretching from April right through to October - is the best time to visit, with daytime temperatures generally sitting in the high 20s that are tempered by sea breezes along the coast.

Over July and August, the temperatures can climb above 30 degrees C - perfect for some, unpleasant for others.

From November to March, temperatures range around 16 degrees C and it can be quite rainy in December and January.

Geography and environment

Malta’s largest island (which goes by the same name) consists of low-lying, hilly and mostly arid terrain covered by terraced fields and bounded by a rugged coastline of coves, harbours and beaches.

Gozo is noticeably greener and more densely vegetated, with craggy cliffs and flat-topped hills.

Top 5 movies shot in Malta

1. gladiator.

Fans of Ridley Scott’s historical Roman epic, charting the rise, fall, rise and death of wronged General Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe) will be interested to hear that the scenes of Ancient Rome and the Colosseum were actually shot in neither. Instead, a million dollar replica of the city and its illustrious fighting stadium were constructed and filmed in Malta’s Fort Ricasoli. The film, which dominated the 73rd Academy Awards, included some brilliant scenes of Rusty doing somersaults while battling tigers.

Starring Brad Pitt and Australia’s own Eric Bana, Wolfgang Peterson’s loose adaptation of Homer’s Iliad was shot almost exclusively in Malta’s Mellieha, Fort Ricasoli and on Malta’s sister island Comino. An epic tale of wanton murder and betrayal, fuelled by an illicit royal affair, the film was purportedly produced on a budget of approximately $175 million – making it one of the most expensive ever made. In a damning demonstration that people learn nothing from history, the Turkish town of Canakkale accepted Pitt's gifting of the giant Trojan Horse maquette used in the film.

3. World War Z

When a zombie outbreak threatens the planet’s very existence, United Nations worker Gerry Lane (played by Malta-crazy Brad Pitt) decides to step in. Citing inspiration from All the President’s Men and The Bourne Identity, this 'politically-penetrating apocalyptic horror film' featured scenes shot in Malta’s Valletta, Cospicua, Vittoriosa and Senglea.

4. Orca - The Killer Whale

A captivating piece of 70s filmmaking wizardry, Orca: The Killer Whale tells the tale of a great white shark hunt gone horribly wrong. Captain Nolan, a salty Irish seadog looking to return to the country of his birth, accepts one last job to catch a great white shark for a local aquarium. But just as he is about to catch the shark, which is about to kill a canoeing scientist named Ken, a killer whale appears out of nowhere and kills the shark. Infuriated, Nolan harpoons the whale, but hits the wrong one – the whale's pregnant whale girlfriend! Understandably irate, the canny Orca bachelor now sets out laying waste to the entire fishing village; sinking boats, exploding the community’s fuel reserves, and chomping Nolan’s friend’s leg off when he attacks their seaside dwelling. The final, nail-biting scene, in which the Killer Orca lures Nolan out to the remote polar region of Labrador and sinks his boat by knocking an iceberg into it, was fabricated and filmed off the coast of Malta.

5. Swept Away

Popularly lauded as one of the worst movies ever made, Guy Ritchie’s Swept Away – starring his then-wife Madonna – marked the director’s filmmaking nadir. A right box-office disaster, the film scooped the 2002 Raspberry Awards and was the only movie ever to have won both Worst Picture and Worst remake or Sequel. What the film does have going for it is the setting, with Blue Lagoon, Vittoriosa and Mdina all featuring prominently as the stunning backdrop to the mismatched couple’s shipwrecked shenanigans.

Taylor Swift releases YouTube short that appears to have new Eras Tour dances

malta short tours

Taylor Swift  released a new YouTube Shorts video and fans believe clips are signifying a "The Tortured Poets Department" number or set during the Eras Tour.

After the double album was released Friday, fans wondered if the singer would fit any of the 31 songs into the three-plus hour set. In the quick 15-second video, fans pointed out a couple of suspect shots, including Swift leaning against a railing that seems to have the "TTPD" logo and a quick scene where her backup dancers hold poles and wear top hats.

Swift has been on a two-month break from the Eras Tour and has spent much of her time in Los Angeles.

If there is a new Eras Tour set, the next question is where would she add the era? "Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince's" opening line is a perfect opening for an artist who has released seven albums and hasn't seen fans: "It's been a long time coming."

She could end the show with the "TTPD" set, but "Karma" is also a good show closer. Other than those two options, she could place "TTPD" after "Reputation" and before "Speak Now" or also right before "Midnights."

"A fortnight til Paris 🤍," Swift says in the caption. Her next tour stop is Paris, France on May 9. Swift will tour in Europe for 51 shows until she takes a break and heads back to the United States and Canada.

Review: Neil Young & Crazy Horse strike heart of gold at tour-opening San Diego concert

Neil Young performing at SDSU on April 24, 2024.

The concert began with an epic, 15-minute version of ‘Cortez The Killer’ that featured extra lyrics recently unearthed by Young. Guitarist-singer Micah Nelson, Willie’s son, very ably assumed the role in Crazy Horse of Nils Lofgren, now on tour with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.

When Neil Young sang “rock and roll will never die” near the conclusion of his tour-opening LOVE EARTH concert with Crazy Horse Wednesday in San Diego, you believed him.

Those words, from his 1978 song, “Hey Hey My My (Into the Black),” sounded like a defiant vow in the face of possible obsolescence 46 years ago. Now, they are a statement of fact from a proud maverick who sounds more committed than ever, even — or, rather, especially — at a time when rock is increasingly becoming a niche genre pushed aside by formulaic pop, hip-hop and dance-music.

At 78, Young remains a staunch keeper of the flame whose passion for music burns as bright as ever. If anyone thinks this veteran singer, songwriter and guitarist is ready to kick back in his old age, he and his band immediately and convincingly refuted such notions with their powerful, nearly two-hour performance at SDSU’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. (They are set to perform a second sold-out show at the same venue Thursday night.)

Young and his three-man band opened with “Cortez the Killer,” an epic number from their 1975 album, “Zuma.” But this was no sentimental journey down nostalgia lane, nor was it a tentative, shake-off-the-dust run through.

Their carefully calibrated version of “Cortez” built to a series of powerful climaxes Monday and lasted 15 minutes — nearly twice as long as the original on “Zuma.” The song began with an opening guitar jam that lasted 7 minutes before Young’s reedy vocals commenced. For good measure, near the conclusion of “Cortez,” he sang — for the first time anywhere in concert — a missing verse he recently came upon that had been cut from the 1975 recording.

The unearthed lyrics provided additional depth and a palpable sense of despair to Young’s tour de force song about Hernán Cortez, the bloody Spanish conqueror of Mexico’s Aztec Empire: I floated on the water / I ate that ocean wave / Two weeks after the slaughter / I was living in a cave / They came too late to get me / But there’s no one here to set me free / From this rocky grave / To that snowed-out ocean wave.

The next selection was the buoyant “Cinnamon Girl,” a choice cut from 1969’s “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere,” the first album Young and Crazy Horse made together. It clocked in at a crisp three minutes.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse performed at the Open Air Theatre at San Diego State April 24, 2024.

The rest of the concert included several other extended jams, with “Down by the River” and “Love and Only Love” both clocking in at a glorious 16 minutes (but not lasting one second too long). Conversely, Young’s tender solo acoustic versions of “Comes a Time,” “Heart of Gold” and “Human Highway” were each delivered with admirable concision.

The manner in which he alternated between longer and shorter selections served as a master class on how to pace a concert to build momentum and achieve maximum dynamic tension and release.

The final encore was an eight-minute rendition of “My My Hey Hey (Into the Black),” whose line There’s more to the picture than meets the eye could be a synopsis of Young’s career and his dogged determination to do things his way, every time, no matter what the trends of the day may be.

At SDSU, Young and his longtime Crazy Horse compadres — bassist/singer Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina, both 80 — were focused and in sync from start to finish. They were joined by guitarist/singer Micah Nelson, 33, who on Monday had played a key role accompanying his father, Willie Nelson, at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.

Willie Nelson performs at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park on Monday, April 22, 2024.

Review: Willie Nelson’s San Diego concert defined, not defied, the passing of time. He turns 91 on April 29.

The American music-master and his band warmed up a damp, cool evening at The Shell. David Sanger, the drummer in opening act Asleep At The Wheel, took the ferry back to his family’s home in Coronado after the show.

April 23, 2024

Micah Nelson was performing in place of Crazy Horse charter member Nils Lofgren, who is now on tour in The E Street Band with his other longtime employer, Bruce Springsteen. Those are big shoes to fill, but Nelson was so in sync with Young you’d think they had been musical partners for decades.

The stage was bedecked with the giant, faux Fender guitar amplifiers, speaker cabinets and road cases Young and Crazy Horse used on their 1978 Rust Never Sleeps tour. There were no video screens on the stage, the better for the audience — which included basketball great Bill Walton and Las Vegas Raiders NFL team owner Mark Davis — to focus completely on the music at hand.

The SDSU concert — the start of Young and Crazy Horse’s first major tour together in a decade — came a year after Young’s mesmerizing solo concert here at The Shell. Wednesday’s performance was even more mesmerizing, in large part because of the musical empathy between the four musicians.

Review: Neil Young delivered singular San Diego solo concert by digging deep for new/old musical gold

The two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee performed his first San Diego solo concert in 31 years, mixing classics with deep, deep album cuts

July 12, 2023

When they locked into a groove, which was often, they seemed to be of one mind. And it’s difficult to think of any other rock band of any vintage that can gain as much traction from so many slow-paced songs.

With few exceptions, Young’s biting guitar solos contained a minimum of notes, but he made each one count, repeatedly going into a zone where feeling and intensity trump quantity. Or, to invoke the title of Young’s 1988 album: “This Note’s For You.”

Apart from a heartfelt spoken tribute to the late David Briggs — the producer of many of Young’s albums with (and without) Crazy Horse — Young’s comments to the audience were along the lines of: “Thank you” and “How ya doin’?”

Otherwise, he let his music speak for him, and it spoke volumes.

Kid Cudi

Kid Cudi ‘s Coachella set was one of the most anticipated last-minute adds to the second weekend of the the 2024 festival. Sadly, the last couple songs Cudi was supposed to perform went without him.

Cudi was nearing the end of his set on Sunday evening when he injured himself in the middle of singing “Best Memories,” a song he shares with David Guetta. In fan-captured video , Cudi is seen launching himself off stage and landing beside a security guard. He was unable to stand on his own and had to be escorted off the stage.

Popular on Variety

Earlier that night, Cudi’s show attracted one of the biggest crowds of the weekend at the Sahara tent where he performed two new songs live for the first time during his foreshortened set, “Moon Man Shit” and “Blue Sky.” He also performed his hits “Up Up & Away,” “Tequila Shots,” and more.

The musician last appeared at Coachella in 2019 when he brought Kanye West as a surprise guest to perform tracks off their collaborative “Kids See Ghosts” album. Cudi is set to embark on a 43-date world tour in support of his new album “Insano,” and will kick off the tour’s North American leg on July 28 in Austin, Texas.

George Bryan, Bryan Bros Golf, Myrtle Beach Classic

George Bryan IV is part of the Bryan Bros Golf YouTube Golf channel. He and his brother Wesley Bryan create various golf content to entertain fans.

On Tuesday, Play Golf Myrtle Beach published its “Q at Myrtle Beach” qualifier on YouTube.

George was one of the eight YouTubers who participated in the 16-player, 18-hole shootout for one spot in this year's inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic .

He and pro golfer Matt Akins tied at 3-under after 18, but Akins beat him in a playoff.

After the main video, the eight content creators began posting their videos from the qualifier.

Yet on Thursday, Twitter user Patrick Lowry congratulated Bryan for earning a spot at the Myrtle Beach Classic. The tweet included a YouTube link to the Bryan Bros video from the qualifier .

George Bryan earns a spot at the Myrtle Beach Classic. well deserved, couldn't be happier for him. @wesleybryangolf @bryanbrosgolf #golf #pgatour https://t.co/eDDl1qETdu pic.twitter.com/HspcbdGYQl — Patrick Lowry (@thepatricklowry) April 26, 2024

The video showcased his journey through the qualifier. Around the 16:44 mark, Bryan explains he has a phone call with the Myrtle Beach Classic’s tournament director, Darren Nelson.

“Hey, I wanted to see what you’re doing May 6-12. We’d like to offer you a spot in the Myrtle Beach Classic,” Nelson said.

With the biggest grin, Bryan gives the camera a fist pump and looks beyond excited.

“Yes, I’m there,” he said. “Holy cow! Not going to lie when you said it was a call, I had my hopes, but I didn’t want my mind to go there and think that I would actually have a chance to play in a PGA Tour event. Honestly, I don’t even know what to think right now. Like I’m still like — holy cow.”

Nelson acknowledged he came close in the qualifier and how the Myrtle Beach Classic team wanted to offer him the spot.

Bryan gave another fist pump, and the excitement radiated from him.

It will be his first PGA Tour event in his home state of South Carolina. George and Wesley both played in the Butterfield Burmuda Championship last fall. However, it is clear playing in the Palmetto State in front of a home crowd is special.
