Maya Rudolph

Maya Rudolph is a super talent who is lit from within. A performing polymath, she is able to deliver big laughs and deep emotions at the same time. We all fell in love with her on Saturday Night Live, where her characters were not only funny, they were having fun. Her work constantly reminds us that we shouldn’t be taking ourselves or our lives too seriously.

For a comedy genius, she is a giant comedy fan. She is generous with her laughter. She loves being part of a team, but she can make the winning shot if you pass her the ball. And let’s not forget her voice, a special gift given to her by her mother Minnie. This voice can sing lead in a Prince cover band , deliver a ridiculous version of the national anthem, or give shape to animated characters that win Emmys.

In Apple TV’s Loot, she plays Molly Novak, a billionaire who learns to give back. In life, Maya has already figured that out. She gives to us over and over again. We should count ourselves lucky that we get to live in a world where the hilarious California mama named Maya Rudolph is here to soothe our pain.

Exclusive: 'Idiocracy' May Be Going on Tour for Its 10th Anniversary [Updated]

Star Maya Rudolph and writer/director Mike Judge might take the show on the road this election year.

Underappreciated at the time of its release in 2006,  Mike Judge's Idiocracy has grown into a cult hit thanks to its prescient writing and relatable characters. I recently re-watched the satirical comedy to see just how close we've come to peak Idiocracy in contemporary times, with surprising results: some prognostications have come true much sooner than expected while others look unbelievably quaint compared with today's new norms. With the current political season in America acting as a springboard for all things  Idiocracy , it's no surprise that the film might be reappearing in a big way for its 10th anniversary.

While speaking with  Maya Rudolph for her role as Matilda in Sony's  Angry Birds , the topic of conversation inevitably turned to  Idiocracy . Consider me delighted and surprised when Rudolph mentioned that she and Judge had been considering a road trip roll-out of  Idiocracy for the film's anniversary, complete with post-screening Q&As. Nothing has been confirmed just yet as the potential event is still in early planning stages, but your enthusiasm for the idea could go a long way toward convincing the powers that be to make it happen!

Check out what Rudolph had to say about  Idiocracy and the possible tour, and be sure to check back for more with Rudolph for her upcoming movie  Angry Birds :

How often do you get asked about Idiocracy these days?

MAYA RUDOLPH: Every time Donald Drumpf opens his mouth, pretty much. I saw Mike Judge recently, who I hadn’t seen in many, many years, and I said to him, “I can’t believe…”

Because the movie was never properly released, it became a kind of cult favorite and over the years I noticed people must have seen it because people would approach me and say, “Oh my god, Idiocracy! That’s so great!” It was so many years later. But recently, it’s been nonstop. And it’s so crazy.

I said, “We should do a road trip or something and then show the movie and talk about it on the anniversary of it.” When we were making the movie, it was so well-written and so sharp and so funny, but it felt like it was so far away. And…

It’s not so much.

RUDOLPH: It’s terrifying. I thought I would be an old granny.

I’d love to watch a road show though.

RUDOLPH: We’re working it out, we’re figuring it out. We’d better hurry up on it though.

Would you like to see  Idiocracy return to select theaters in a road trip Q&A format? Be sure to let us know in the comments below!

Update: Here's a look at the special 10th anniversary cast and filmmaker reunion screening of Idiocracy at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, CA with concurrent nationwide screenings and a worldwide livestream Q&A:

The Alamo Drafthouse, along with the network of Art House Convergence Theaters and local League of Women Voters chapters, want to invite everyone to revisit and rediscover IDIOCRACY on the eve of the 2016 presidential election. In attendance at the event will be director and writer Mike Judge and star Maya Rudolph.   Members of the cast and crew of IDIOCRACY will be live in person at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica at 6:45pm on October 4th for a screening of the film and a post-movie conversation.   Concurrent IDIOCRACY screenings will also take place at Alamo Drafthouse locations and Art House Convergence theaters across the country and the post-movie conversation will be live-streamed to those audiences.   For those that can't make it to an Alamo Drafthouse or Art House Convergence theater, fear not, you can still join in the fun. Watch the film from your own DVD, from Amazon, iTunes or the platform of your choice.  Press play exactly at 7:00pm Pacific Standard Time, and then tune into Facebook Live from facebook.com/alamodrafthouse for the post-movie conversation at 8:25pm PST .   Questions will be taken from the live audience in Santa Monica, but also from the live-stream and Facebook Live audiences via Twitter using the hashtag #IdiocracyToday.

A complete list of participating theaters will be updated at drafthouse.com/idiocracy , so check back there if your city isn't located below:

The two have been singing together since college but it wasn’t until 2012 that the duo turned their collective, life-long obsession for Prince into a musical project, and each performance is a love letter to the Artist himself. Since then, they have performed on the Tonight Show, the Grammys Salute To Prince, and even received warm hugs from Prince in the flesh. Don’t Worry, They Won’t Hurt U. . . Maya Rudolph sat down with uDiscover to reflect on her mother, Minnie Riperton’s remarkable career and the deluxe reissue of her album ‘Perfect Angel’.

Maya Rudolph Minnie Riperton Perfect Angel

Many know the actress and comedian Maya Rudolph from her starring film roles and her eight-year stint on Saturday Night Live . As the daughter of the beloved singer Minnie Riperton , and songwriter, musician, and producer Richard Rudolph, she also comes from a storied musical family. Maya has fond memories of growing up in a creative household and joining her parents on tour.

Maya Rudolph and her longtime friend Gretchen Lieberum, who perform together in the cult-fave Prince cover band, Princess, performed at the Troubador in Los Angeles – the very same venue where her mother introduced her iconic album, Perfect Angel . Maya sat down before her show at the Troubadour to reflect on her mother’s remarkable career and the anniversary of Perfect Angel , which originally came out on August 9, 1974.

Maya Rudolph On Her Mother’s Iconic Album: Minnie Riperton's 'Perfect Angel': Part 1

“I always had a sense that my mom was doing something different and special, because I saw how people responded to her,” says Rudolph. “Her energy just had something to it that made people so happy. I remember people coming to our house as a kid and there was such a good feeling. Plus I had heard my mum sing, even as a kid I knew it was really good.”

‘Diana!’: Showtime In 1971 For The Post-Supremes Diana Ross

Brittany howard and michael kiwanuka announce co-headlining tour, ‘don’t leave me this way’: motown trumps philly with thelma houston.

Riperton was, at 27 years old, a veteran of the music industry when Perfect Angel was released in 1974. As a teenager, at Chess Records, she sung background on sessions for Etta James and The Dells, and made her own records with The Gems and as a solo under the alias Andrea Davis. She soon joined the psychedelic-soul outfit Rotary Connection, then made her solo album debut with Come To My Garden in 1970. Even with this incredibly diverse output, Riperton is still best known for her love song, “Lovin’ You,” which became a No. 1 Billboard hit and showcased her five-and-a-half-octave vocal range.

“Lovin’ You” was originally written as a lullaby to one-year-old Maya and her brother Marc, so that Riperton and her husband could spend time together, living as a young couple in Gainesville, Florida. At the end of the LP version, you can hear Minnie singing “Maya, Maya.”

Maya Rudolph On Her Mother’s Iconic Album: Minnie Riperton's Perfect Angel: Part 2

It wasn’t until she was an adult that Maya Rudolph learned the story behind the song. “I didn’t really put together that ‘Lovin’ You’ was for me and my brother. I heard my name and was kind of like, ‘Oh that’s cool, it’s for us,’ but we didn’t really know.”

Perfect Angel was also a collaborative production by Minnie, Richard Rudolph, and Stevie Wonder . Wonder, in addition to co-producing, arranged the tracks with his band, Wonderlove, played keyboards, harmonica, drums, and wrote the title track, “Perfect Angel,” and “Take a Little Trip” – all while he was sweeping the Grammys for Talking Book and Innervisions , and working on another LP, Fulfillingness’ First Finale , which featured Minnie as a background vocalist.

Maya remembers Stevie hanging around at their house during this period and marvels at how young these prolific performers were. “What I didn’t realize is they were kids, they were all kids,” recalls Rudolph. “It’s wild when I think about it now, because I took them seriously. I thought they were adults.”

Maya Rudolph On Her Mother’s Iconic Album: Minnie Riperton's Perfect Angel: Part 3

“I actually do have strong memories of Stevie from my childhood,” recalls Maya Rudolph. “He would come over all the time and thumb-wrestle with my dad, my brother, and me. He was my parents’ funny friend, but I knew he possessed this quality that was so special. It’s a weird thing to grow up around these incredibly special human beings, but that’s what he possesses as well. Which is why I know they found each other.”

Perfect Angel: Deluxe Edition includes 11 bonus tracks, including a duet version of “Take A Little Trip” with Wonder; an alternate take of “Lovin’ You”; an acoustic version of “Seeing You This Way”; and an early version of “Don’t Let Anyone Bring You Down,” a track that was later re-recorded for Riperton’s following album, Adventures In Paradise . The bonus tracks add up to a complete, alternate version of Perfect Angel . Now 40-plus years after the record’s initial release, Maya is still in awe of the record’s staying power.

“It’s amazing to me, though not surprising that it’s such an iconic song [‘Lovin’ You’] and record. It was the debut of this special quality my mother had and people were just… blown away. So really, it was her big introduction to people. It just sounds like a perfect example of that time and everything coming together in the right way.”

Maya Rudolph On Her Mother’s Iconic Album: Minnie Riperton's Perfect Angel: Part 4

Riperton’s career was tragically cut short at the age of 31, after succumbing to breast cancer in 1979. Maya Rudolph has become something of the family spokesperson and sounding board for the legions of fans who hold onto Riperton’s memory.

“Over the course of my life I’ve become a receptor to the world for people who want to tell me [or tell her] how great she was,” says Rudolph.

“How much the song affected their lives, how much her music meant to them and how special her voice was. My mom was 31 when she died and I’m 45. I’m so much older than she was and I’ve had so much time to process all the information I didn’t really want to talk about or think about. For many years of my life, it was too much. But then I grew up and I took such enormous pride in knowing that she really stands out as this individual, as this one-of-a-kind, gem of human being, of a recording artist, of a performer and really… of a woman.”

Perfect Angel: Deluxe Edition includes a 24-page booklet with rare photos and extensive liner notes by Richard Rudolph, telling the story of the album-making experience. Rudolph also reveals the story behind the album’s “ice cream and coveralls” cover shot by Barry Feinstein, who was known for his Bob Dylan images and the covers for Janis Joplin’s Pearl , Eric Clapton ’s solo debut of 1970 and George Harrison ’s All Things Must Pass , among others.

Perfect Angel: Deluxe Edition  can be bought here .

Since the age of 17, Minnie Rippleton has been my favorite Artist of all times; still to this day. Hearing her songs takes me right back to an innocent, happy place filled with love and joy! Much respect always, the Queen!

I know she is very proud of her babygirl; a star in her own rights! Gifts to us all…

Maya Rudolph Power of Women of Comedy Variety

Maya Rudolph is one of six creative leaders in comedy honored for Variety ‘s 2021 Power of Women. For more, click here .

When Maya Rudolph was a kid, she’d stage one-girl musicals in her living room and play make believe in empty corners of her mother’s recording studios, creating makeshift stages anywhere she could to satisfy her performing itch. Some 40 years later, though, she has so many platforms to choose from that it’s become genuinely overwhelming.

“Before any thoughts of quarantine, I was feeling very burned out,” she admits. “I was weirdly well on my way to retooling, and I think I’m still there. I feel less ashamed to admit that I would like to go a bit slower.”

Before the pandemic hit, Rudolph was booked solid. She had once again become an “SNL” mainstay to play then-Senator Kamala Harris, while her portrayal of a goofy, almighty judge on “ The Good Place ” made her one of the show’s most memorable guest stars. Her malleable voice had become ubiquitous across the wide world of animation, especially with her portrayal of a gleefully filthy “hormone monstress” on Netflix’s “ Big Mouth ,” a brilliant showcase for her ability to turn any single phrase (e.g. “bubble bath”) into a luscious dessert (e.g. “bwuuuuhbble bayaaaath”).

All three of those roles landed Rudolph Emmy nominations and then her first two wins in 2020. (The only reason she lost the third was because she had been nominated twice in the same category.) But the constant stream of obligations left her exhausted, burned out by her own enthusiasm for being a part of as much as possible, as often as possible. “I was just saying ‘yes’ to everything,” she sighs. “It took a toll, and I was tired.” So when the opportunity came for her to pump the brakes, she gratefully did.

Speaking from her home in Los Angeles a week after hosting “SNL” for the second time, Rudolph is contemplative about this potential turning point in her life and career. “Something that I feel has been a big awakening for me as I look at work is what makes me happy, what makes me unhappy, and how do I establish those boundaries?” she explains. On a macro level, that might mean taking on fewer projects even if she loves everyone involved in them. On a smaller, more immediate level, that just might mean wearing whatever the hell she wants.

“Heels and I were already on the outs, but now we’ve gone our separate ways, which is fine by me,” Rudolph laughs. “And I no longer have a waist, so there’s that. My thighs haven’t seen pant legs in a year. I’m just going to become Elaine Stritch and wear a shirt.”

Even over Zoom, Rudolph already seems perfectly content with this ethos. Her distinctive voice turned down from 11, she blinks into the Zoom camera through clear-rimmed glasses, her dog Daisy curled in her lap. And while her flowered smock isn’t exactly the crisp white button-down for which Stritch became famous, Rudolph draws inspiration from brassy broads like her who insisted on being themselves, expectations be damned.

Take Rudolph’s comedic idol Madeleine Kahn, a forcefully funny woman whose impeccable glamor came arm-in-arm with her ability to make every line a standout. Growing up with Mel Brooks films as a household staple, Rudolph would watch in awe as Kahn outshone everyone else as an impetuous empress, a jaded madam, a film noir heroine climbing out of a pristine Cadillac in a matching jumpsuit. Rudolph didn’t have to know exactly what Kahn was imitating to know that she was always, as Rudolph puts it, “the beautiful woman doing something hilarious.” Later, as she became more aware of comedians like Catherine O’Hara, Gilda Radner and Jan Hooks, she realized this niche of comedian was her ideal. “Whether I realized it or not, I was watching these women that I wanted to be, who were gorgeous and funny — which to me is the ultimate combination of perfection,” she says. “They could just do anything.”

Then again, Rudolph’s also partial to less glamorous comedic turns, like so many of the scenes in “Bridesmaids” that made the movie such a standout 10(!) years ago. While her infamous “ shitting in the street ” moment was mostly just stressful — you try sliding to your knees in a wedding gown across a full lane of traffic — she fondly remembers the setup of everyone sweating through food poisoning before all hell breaks loose. “Knowing what was coming and everyone having to hide it, constantly being sprayed down with everyone in different stages of duress…it was just a really fun slow burn,” she recalls with a laugh. (More than anything else with “Bridesmaids,” Rudolph remembers laughing.)

She grew up with a keen eye for what makes performers great, not least because she spent her early childhood watching her mother, the singer Minnie Riperton, dazzle crowds on tour. As she watched musicians crush their sets with wit and flair, she’d long to do the same. “And then I’d see something funny, like a movie or a comedian, and think that I want to be like that, too,” she adds. “It wasn’t tangible to really understand what it was, but some magical quality.” She quickly came to revere this indescribable connection between music and comedy, the two defining creative forces of her life. “They’re kind of the same language, weirdly,” she explains. “They’re both things that, when they’re done well, they can’t really be taught. You’re either good at them or you’re not.”

Rudolph will soon get a musical comedy opportunity like never before with a juicy villain role in “Disenchanted,” the highly anticipated sequel to Disney’s “Enchanted,” starring Amy Adams as a wide-eyed princess navigating modern New York City. In a follow-up call the day after the table read, Rudolph gushed about the lively “school play” vibe of the movie and the delicious pleasures of getting to play a villain with “Dynasty”-level camp. (“It’s so dramatic!”)

“If this had been 15 years ago and someone asked if I wanted to be the bad guy, I might’ve been like, ‘geez, I don’t know,'” she says. “But I’ve come to learn in my many years that the most fun thing to get to do is when you get to play The Most.” She also recounted director Adam Shankman approaching her about taking on the part, and how gratifying it was to realize that he knew exactly why he wanted her for it. “It’s nice to be in a place work-wise where I feel like a lot of what I’ve done can speak for itself,” she says, “so I don’t have to explain who I am or what I do.”

Because as anyone who’s seen even a minute of her performing will know, so much of Rudolph’s comedy is intrinsically musical. Every one of her characters, whether Beyoncé or a Bronx mom or a dizzy game show host, speaks with an infectious, uniquely bizarre lilt as Rudolph’s wraps her voice around their lines. Her Beyoncé impression in particular came almost as second nature. As a fervent fan, Rudolph says, she’d already been paying such close attention to how Beyoncé composes herself that when it came time to imitate her, it felt like “when you’re telling a story about a friend, and when you say what they said, you say it in their voice.”

Rudolph’s skill at twisting a single word into a wonderfully weird waterfall of sounds is unparalleled; she doesn’t have to be telling a joke to be hilarious. So it’s unsurprising to learn that Rudolph might feel most at ease in the voiceover booth, where she’s been able to experiment since her “SNL” days of volunteering for whatever narration might be needed that week. “It’s probably where I feel the most myself: not on camera, and not a musician, but sort of a blending of the two,” she muses. It’s also thrilling for her to step outside her own body to be anything at all without limitation. On “Big Mouth,” for example, she portrays everything from the Hormone Monstress to a school principal to a dirty pillow. “It really feels like a place of freedom,” she says of her prolific voiceover work. “You’re not limited to male, female, human, animal, monster, whatever you’re made up of. That’s a place where I feel very comfortable.”

It doesn’t escape Rudolph that she’s spent a lifetime defying categorization both through her comedy and as a person. “As somebody who’s not white, not Black, not just mixed, but my own particular mixture of mixed: Jewish, and speckled, with a big nose…I always identified as being very singularly myself, and not really belonging to any club,” she says. The scrutiny crept its way under her skin, but now, she reminds herself that other people’s attempts to label her says more about them than her. “People really try to figure out who or what you are because it makes them comfortable,” she insists, as forceful as she’ll ever get throughout our conversation. “It doesn’t have anything to do with me .”

And that, ultimately, is where she also lands on the age-old question of what it’s like to be A Woman in Comedy, which plagued her at “SNL” and reemerged when “Bridesmaids” dared to spotlight funny women with no qualifiers (and very few men). When asked if the conversation has changed at all since, she’s wary in a way that makes it clear just how many times she’s had to go down a road she finds truly frustrating. “I feel like it’s my obligation to continue doing what I do best as opposed to, like, methodically thinking about my gender in order to be funny or not,” Rudolph shrugs. “I don’t give a fuck about that stuff.”

As Daisy clambers off her lap, Rudolph sighs and adjusts her glasses, as if making sure she can see her next point clearly enough to make it. “It’s a funny one,” she says, “because the minute I stick my toe into the conversation, I feel like it allows the conversation to exist…this leftover conversation that won’t die.” She rolls her eyes, cocks an eyebrow, lets loose the ghost of a grin. “In reality, it’s like we threw a great party, and then somebody walked in and was like, ‘wait, this is a girls ’ party!’ And it’s like, ‘uh, what are you talking about? It’s just a party.’”

Maya Rudolph Explains Why Having Famous Parents Didn't Boost Her Comedy Career: 'I Had to Get There Myself'

'They were musicians,' Rudolph said of her dad, songwriter Richard Rudolph, and mom, 'Loving You' singer Minnie Riperton

Maya Rudolph is reflecting on what it was like growing up in the entertainment industry once people found out who her mother was.

On Monday, April 22, the Bridesmaids actress, 51, appeared on the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard and discussed her father, American songwriter and musician Richard Rudolph, 77, and her mother, late singer-songwriter Minnie Riperton, best known for her 1974 single “ Lovin’ You .”

In the interview with Shepard, 49, the actress admits that having famous parents was not as much of an advantage as some may think.

“They were musicians,” she said. “They weren't actors.”

“My trajectory was, I wanted to go to New York, and I wanted to be on Saturday Night Live ,” Rudolph explained.

She added, “I understand that drive to be somewhere else — forage in a new city and create my own path. But that’s a huge undertaking. I wasn’t like, ‘Oh my dad writes songs, that’s gonna make me a comedian.' There was no direct line. I knew I had to get there myself.”

Rudolph then reflected on her mother’s fame, although she wasn’t quite sure that many of her peers knew about her success.

“It's interesting because my mom was a singer that not all my friends were that aware of at the time,” she said.

Rudolph said many didn’t make the connection until years later.

“Everybody that knows who I am now knows that's my mom. But growing up, I didn't feel like she was a household name. I felt like she was special, yeah,” she added as Shepard agreed.

Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty

According to Rudolph, networks like MTV weren’t on air yet during the peak of her mother’s fame.

“She was also insanely young when she died,” Shepard said.

Riperton died of breast cancer in 1979 at the age of 31. Rudolph was only six years old at the time.

The actress added that not having the same last name as her mother didn’t make it any easier for people to make the connection that they were related.

“So when I started doing SNL , people didn't really know she was my mom, and they figured it out later. So, look, when you're a kid and your mom dies, you don't want people to know that,” Rudolph said of never really bringing the topic up with others when she was younger.

However, she noted that when people did learn who her mom was there would be an “added element” of them wanting to discuss her — which Rudolph would not want to do.

“If she hadn't been a singer, you probably would've had to talk about it far less,” Shepard said.

Over time, Rudolph seemingly found it easier to talk about.

“My mom was music,” Rudolph told NPR in 2012. “Music poured out of my mother, and I’m sure I heard it before I even got here when I was in her belly. Music sounds and feels very normal to me. My dad wrote all the songs with my mom.”

Maya Rudolph Shared How She Created Her Own Path To Fame, Despite Having Two Famous Parents

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Maya Rudolph understands the privileges she's been given due to nepotism, but she doesn't believe it had any influence in breaking into comedy.

For those who don't know, Maya's mother is legendary singer Minnie Riperton , who was best known for her 1974 song "Lovin' You."

Maya even recreated two of her mom's album covers when she hosted SNL back in 2021.

Her father is famed songwriter and producer Richard Rudolph . Richard cowrote "Lovin' You" with Minnie and collaborated with some of music's biggest names like Stevie Wonder, 2Pac, Teena Marie, Michael McDonald, Chaka Khan, The Temptations, New Edition, and more.

Pictured above is Maya Rudolph, her father Richard Rudolph, her mother Minnie Riperton, and Maya's brother Marc Rudolph.

During a recent interview on the Armchair Expert podcast, Maya explained why she doesn't think having famous parents helped boost her acting and comedy career.

“They were musicians. They weren’t actors,” Maya said. “My trajectory was, I wanted to go to New York, and I wanted to be on Saturday Night Live. I understand that drive to be somewhere else — forage in a new city and create my own path."

"But that’s a huge undertaking. I wasn’t like, ‘Oh my dad writes songs, that’s gonna make me a comedian.’ There was no direct line. I knew I had to get there myself.”

Maya, who currently stars on the hit Apple TV+ series Loot , went on to reflect on her mother's legacy and how many of her friends weren't even aware that they were related.

“It’s interesting because my mom was a singer that not all my friends were that aware of at the time. Everybody that knows who I am now knows that’s my mom, but growing up, I didn’t feel like she was a household name."

Despite feeling like those around her didn't truly know who her mother was, Maya couldn't help but gush over how "special" she was.

Minnie died at the age of 31 of breast cancer in 1979.

Maya Rudolph’s Parents Are Entertainment Legends, But “There Was No Direct Line” to Making It Big

By Kase Wickman

When you think about it, everyone is someone’s nepo baby, including Saturday Night Live icon Maya Rudolph . However, as she shared on an episode of Dax Shepard ’s Armchair Expert podcast published Monday, it doesn’t really matter if you’re not going into the same industry your parents excelled in.

Rudolph, 51, is the daughter of successful songwriters and musicians Richard Rudolph and the late Minnie Riperton, best known for the single “Lovin’ You.”

“They were musicians,” she said, explaining that despite her parents’ success, she didn’t get a leg up. “They weren't actors.”

“My trajectory was, I wanted to go to New York, and I wanted to be on Saturday Night Live .”

“That’s a huge undertaking,” she said. “I wasn’t like, ‘Oh my dad writes songs, that’s gonna make me a comedian.’ There was no direct line. I knew I had to get there myself.”

Rudolph was only six years old when Riperton died of breast cancer in 1979 at the age of 31. “So when I started doing SNL , people didn't really know she was my mom, and they figured it out later,” Rudolph said. “So, look, when you're a kid and your mom dies, you don't want people to know that.”

“I’ll never get over how young she was,” she added.

Rudolph parlayed an early career with the legendary improv group The Groundlings into a seven-year stint on Saturday Night Live , from 2000 to 2007, starred in films like Bridesmaids , and is now leading Loot , the second season of which premieres in May on Apple TV+.

One place where Rudolph’s connections and friendships do come in handy, however, is in getting to have the best coworkers ever. She discussed working with old friends like Melissa McCarthy and Nat Faxon , as well as SNL castmates Tina Fey and Amy Poehler , for work that she described as “playing” and a “group sport” with teammates she knows and trusts.

“As much as I want to feel good, I wanna feel safe,” she said. “I think I got better at it after I had Pearl when I had my oldest daughter. I remember thinking how hard it was to be working away from home when I had a baby at home and how painful that was. If you're doing something that doesn't feel good. And so I remember teaching myself, when you go out in the world, make sure you're happy with what you're doing because you would rather be at home with her. It has to be worth it. And that's not to say that it's that easy to always accomplish, but it's certainly the goal. And if you can do that, it makes a world of difference. Plus, we have the luxury of knowing so many fucking funny people.”

Loot is gearing up for a second chapter at Apple TV+, and in anticipation of the show’s return, the stars and creatives stopped by TV Insider’s Portrait Studio at the Television Critics Association ( TCA ) Winter Press Tour.

The series following Molly Wells’ ( Maya Rudolph ) journey to rid herself of the vast funds she’s accumulated as the ex of tech billionaire John Novak (Adam Scott), will see her thriving as the lead of her philanthropic organization, the Wells Foundation. Focusing mainly on charity work, Molly is guided by her trusty assistant Nicholas ( Joel Kim Booster ), and her driven executive director of the Wells Foundation, Sofia Salinas ( Michaela Jaé Rodriguez ).

Having sworn off any new relationships, it’s unclear where Molly stands with crush Arthur ( Nat Faxon ) who has moved past his feelings for her to embrace a new version of himself in Season 2. Although Molly is fabulous and single, she still needs help and isn’t entirely independent, returning alongside Molly, Nicholas, Sofia, and Arthur are fellow members of the Wells Foundation team, Howard ( Ron Funches ), Rhonda (Meagen Fay), and Ainsley ( Stephanie Styles ).

Together, they’ll work to funnel Molly’s fortune into positive projects that could shake up all of their lives, making room for plenty of comedy to ensue when the show returns on April 3. Before then, fans are getting a closer look at Rudolph, Booster, Rodriguez, and Faxon alongside creators Matt Hubbard and Alan Yang who stepped into the TCA Portrait Studio.

Maya Rudolph admits it used to be 'painful' to hear late mother's biggest hit

Maya Rudolph has admitted it used to be "painful" to be reminded of her late mother Minnie Riperton's song Lovin' You.

During Monday's episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, host Dax Shepard recalled a moment on the 2004 set of their film Idiocracy when the Bridesmaids star asked him to stop singing the 1974 song.

"I'm sure I was honest with you about why it's too painful," she replied. "That was at a different stage in my life where that would be painful to me whereas now I'm just like, oh my God, OK, yeah, go ahead, go for it, sing it. But it's not painful."

Minnie, who wrote the song with Maya's father Richard Rudolph, died of breast cancer at the age of 31 in 1979, when Maya was almost seven years old.

The former Saturday Night Live star explained that the pain felt different after she had children with her filmmaker husband Paul Thomas Anderson.

"It wasn't like a magic bullet of, oh, I have kids now, I'm healed," she continued. "But after I started having my kids, I think I looked back and went like, oh, I don't feel the pain in the same way. It's never going to be gone, it's just that I hadn't processed any of it at that time of my life."

Elsewhere in the interview, the comedian admitted she refuses to sing "real music" in public because of the "expectation" placed on her as the daughter of Minnie, who had a five-octave range.

"I've seen it in my children sometimes where they'll start something and I can see the gears turning of like, if this isn't great, I'm not going to do it. So that's me with real music. Real music meaning pouring my heart and soul and bearing my voice," she confessed.

Maya is in a Prince cover band called Princess.
