MOTORCYCLING TRAVEL INSURANCE POLICIES UK

All our motorcycling travel insurance policies will cover you for on-road motorcycling, with no cc restrictions, as long as you hold a FULL licence to be riding a bike of that size in your home country, and wear a crash helmet (even if local law doesn’t insist on it). On-road motorcycling touring does not necessarily have to be a tarmac road, but the road must be what passes for the road locally.

Please note that these policies are NOT to insure your motorcycle and do NOT cover Third Party Liability (Personal Liability). These are Travel Insurance policies for bikers, to cover you whilst travelling by motorcycle abroad and on motorcycle holidays, for medical expenses etc.

They are only available to UK residents, though some Short Stay policies are also available to residents of certain other European countries. Whilst these policies cover Medical Expenses relating to motorcycling (ambulance, air ambulance, hospital costs, repatriation etc) most of these policies, including Navigator Silver, Pearl, Gold & Diamond, do NOT cover additional compensation for accidental Death, Loss of Limb, Loss of Sight, Disablement, arising from a motorcycling-related accident.

WHY DO YOU NEED MOTORCYCLE TRAVEL INSURANCE?

Motorcycle travel insurance is essential for anyone who plans on booking a motorcycle holiday or taking their motorbike touring abroad. This includes anyone who plans on touring on their motorcycle, taking biking road trips, off-road motorbiking, and participating in track days.

Ensuring that you have the right motorcycle travel insurance policy for you will mean that you remain protected no matter where you go for all motorbike-related activities you may be embarking on during your motorcycle holidays.

WHAT DOES TRAVEL INSURANCE FOR MOTORCYCLISTS COVER?

Depending on which motorcycle travel insurance policy you opt for, this will determine what you are and aren’t covered for during your motorcycle holidays. For example, some policies will cover both on-road and off-road motorcycle use in their travel insurance for motorcyclists, whereas some may only cover on-road.

It is worth noting that opting for additional off-road cover might incur additional costs.

You must complete the necessary research into the different available motorcycle travel insurance policies to ensure that you choose a policy that is most suited for you and the travel and activities that you will be engaging in during your motorcycle holidays.

WHEN IS ON-ROAD NOT ON-ROAD? (Navigator Silver, Gold & Diamond policies).

PLEASE NOTE – WE DO NOT ACCEPT THAT “EVENTS” SUCH AS MOTOGIRO DE ITALIA, STELLA ALPINA ETC, ARE ON ROAD, LEISURE MOTORCYCLE TOURING. WE CAN COVER THESE EVENTS, BUT ONLY ON MORE EXPENSIVE MOTORSPORT POLICIES, WHERE INDEPENDENT OFF-ROADING IS COVERED.

SIMILARLY, WE REGRET THAT INSURERS DO NOT REGARD NETWORKS SUCH AS TET (TRANS-EUROP TRAIL NETWORK) AS ON-ROAD MOTORCYCLING, AS THERE ARE NARROW SECTIONS WHERE YOU CANNOT GET A 4×4. UNFORTUNATELY, AS TET TOURING IS NOT GUIDED, TOUR OPERATOR ORGANIZED OFF-ROADING, WE CAN NO LONGER COVER IT UNLESS YOU ARE SURE THAT THE SECTIONS THAT YOU ARE RIDING ARE MARKED ON GENERAL MAPS AND ARE WIDE ENOUGH FOR OTHER TRAFFIC TYPES TO USE (WE WOULD THEN CLASS IT AS ON-ROAD RIDING).

IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ABOUT THE NATURE OF THE TET/ACT TRAILS THAT YOU WILL BE RIDING, THIS IS NOT A SUITABLE POLICY FOR YOUR TRIP.

We have recently lost our off-roading (Motorcycle Silver and Motorcycle Gold) policies, due to the underwriter pulling out.

We have motorcycle travel insurance policies with another underwriter, the Navigator Silver, Navigator Gold and Navigator Diamond, but these are principally for on-road motorcycling. True Off-Road motorcycling on personally guided organised tours can be covered, but only for a MAXIMUM of 7 days and at the Action Plus sport supplement, which doubles the cost. However, we have been talking to the underwriter and have agreed to relax rules relating to what constitutes on-road motorcycling. We now regard on-road motorcycling as :

1 – Riding legally on Highways and Byways that are available for motorised vehicles (i.e. green laning etc). They should be substantial enough for a 4WD to negotiate.

2 – They MUST be marked on a map as roads (not footpaths/bridleways, for example)

3 – They MUST be rights of way for motorised vehicles, i.e. NOT restricted byways for walkers, push bikes and horses, and NOT forest fire roads which are not open to unauthorised motorised vehicles.

4 – As a rule of thumb, if you don’t need a licence, motor vehicle tax and insurance to ride on it, we would regard it as off-roading and you would NOT be covered. Highways and byways with legal access for motorised vehicles would require these documents. Strangely, our insurers still require you to hold a FULL licence for the size of bike being used, even when off-road riding (don’t ask!). I suppose it’s the only way they have of knowing that you have some experience on a motorcycle…

5 – Unfortunately, Navigator Silver and Navigator Gold policies are not as generous as the old policies. These will NOT cover motorcycle touring trips of more than 31 consecutive days unless you pay the Action Plus sport supplement which increases this to 62 consecutive days. There is NO cover for the bike or your gear (helmets/leathers and boots etc) and NO cover for Motocross or competitive riding of any sort, and NO cover for Track Days, or true off-roading (other than 7 days guided organised tour at Action Plus supplement), Enduro etc.

Long term on road motorcycling and competitive motorsport can be covered on our new AIG Backpacker & Longstay policies – call 0161 973 6435 or email [email protected] for a quote.

6 – If there is any doubt about the nature of the riding that you may encounter on your trip, we strongly recommend that you pay the Action Plus sport supplement, which extends cover to true off-roading for a maximum of 7 days of the trip, though this travel insurance for motorcyclists is only for organised guided (by a human!) motorcycling tours.

If you buy one of these Single Trip policies online, it is important that you start the cover on the date that you leave the UK (or your home country) and end it on the date that you get home. If you just buy the motorcycle travel insurance policy for a few days in the middle of a trip when you are booked on a motorcycling tour, the policy will be completely INVALID. These are not top-up policies, they must cover the whole trip.

WHICH POLICY DO I NEED?

To minimise confusion, we have detailed the scope of our UK motorcycling cover for your motorcycle holidays on our policies below:

Navigator Silver, Gold & Diamond. ( Quote or buy online or by phone – 0161 973 6435)

Cover for On Road Motorcycle Touring is restricted to 31 consecutive days per trip, with the option to increase to 62 days at the Action Plus supplement. This applies to Annual Multi-Trip and Short Stay Single Trip versions of these policies. The Long Stay Single Trip version of the policy is restricted to 31 consecutive days, with no option to increase this limit.

Cover for Off-Road Motorcycling (as part of a personally guided organised motorcycling tour) is restricted to 7 consecutive days with the Action Plus supplement, at extra cost. Again, this only applies to Annual Multi-Trip or Short Stay Single Trip policies and is not available on the Long Stay Single Trip version for your motorcycle holidays (see definition of on-road/off-road above).

If you buy one of these Single Trip policies online, it is important that you start the cover on the date that you leave the UK (or your home country) and end it on the date that you get home from your motorcycle holidays. If you just buy the motorcycle travel insurance policy for a few days in the middle of a trip when you are booked on a motorcycling tour, the policy will be completely INVALID. These are not top-up policies, they must cover the whole trip.

Longstay & Backpacker  ( Quote or buy by phone only – 0161 973 6435)

On Road motorcycling can be covered for trips of up to 18 months with NO cc restrictions. Limited off-road cover available with 250cc maximum. Motocross and other competitive riding can be covered at extra cost.

High-Risk Voyager. ( Quote or buy online or by phone – 0161 973 6435)

On Road Motorcycling is only covered for a maximum of 14 consecutive days per trip. This motorcycle travel insurance policy is primarily for people working overseas and is not really intended for touring holidays.

Travel Plus. ( Quote or buy by phone only – 0161 973 6435)

This policy is NOT suitable for motorcycling as there is now a limit of 250cc.   On road motorcycling on made-up public roads is covered, though ONLY up to the 250cc limit. Full licence must be held

Adventures. ( Quote or buy by phone only – 0161 973 6435)

On Road Motorcycling is covered for 6 months maximum with this motorcycle travel insurance policy. This insurer does NOT use the above definition of “on-road”. They do not require roads to be tarmac, but they must be official public highways, passable to most traffic types.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are there any cc restrictions on navigator policies.

There are no cc restrictions on any of our motorcycle travel insurance policies as long as you hold a full licence to ride a similar-sized bike in the UK (or EU on some policies).

Am I covered for Third Party/Personal Liability?

Motorcycle travel insurance excludes liability cover if the claim arises from using any motorised vehicle. This must be covered on the vehicle/motorcycle insurance.

Do Navigator policies cover me on a rented motorcycle?

Yes, Navigator policies will cover you on owned, rented or borrowed bikes, as long as you have an appropriate full licence and are street legal.

Can I ride off-road on Navigator policies?

Our motorcycle holiday insurance policies cover on-road at standard prices, though roads do not have to be tarmac. If they are official highways, marked as such on a map, or are byways legally open to motorised vehicles and marked as such on a map, this would be classed as on road. Proper Off-Road riding on a guided off-road motorcycling tour can be covered on our Navigator Silver, Gold and Diamond policies for a maximum of 7 days, by selecting the “Action Plus” option on the second page of the online application. This doubles the cost. Strangely, our insurers still require you to hold a FULL licence for the size of bike being used, even when off-road riding (don’t ask!). I suppose it’s the only way they have of knowing that you have some experience on a motorcycle…

Am I covered as a pillion passenger on a motorcycle?

Our travel insurance for motorcyclists will cover you as a pillion, as long as the rider holds a full licence for the bike.

If you have any queries or need assistance with quotes or booking your motorcycle travel insurance, please do not hesitate to call us on 0161 973 6435 or email [email protected]

All our other travel insurance policies can also incorporate motorcycle travel insurance, as detailed above.

Making International Motorcycle Trips Easy

Motorcycle travel insurance: why you need it for your next adventure.

Motorcycle travel can be an exhilarating experience, but it also comes with its own set of risks. From unexpected accidents to lost luggage, there are many things that could go wrong on a motorcycle trip. That's where motorcycle travel insurance comes in.

Motorcycle travel insurance is designed to protect you and your bike while you're on the road. It can cover a wide range of situations, including medical expenses, trip cancellations, lost or stolen gear, and more. With the right coverage, you can travel with peace of mind, knowing that you're protected in case anything goes wrong.

However, not all motorcycle travel insurance policies are created equal. It's important to carefully review the coverage options and exclusions to ensure that you're getting the protection you need.

Why You Need Motorcycle Travel Insurance

Coverage benefits.

Traveling on a motorcycle can be an exciting and adventurous way to explore new places. However, it also comes with its own set of risks. Motorcycle travel insurance can provide coverage for a variety of benefits, including:

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Cancellation or interruption of your trip
  • Lost or stolen luggage and personal belongings
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation
  • Accidental death and dismemberment

Having these benefits can give you peace of mind while traveling, knowing that you are protected in case of unexpected events.

Common Risks

Motorcycle travel can be riskier than other forms of travel. Some common risks that motorcycle travelers face include:

  • Accidents and injuries
  • Illness or medical emergencies
  • Theft or loss of personal belongings
  • Weather-related incidents
  • Unforeseen trip cancellations or interruptions

Having motorcycle travel insurance can help mitigate these risks and provide protection in the event that something goes wrong during your trip.

Cost Comparison

The cost of motorcycle travel insurance can vary depending on a variety of factors, such as your age, destination, length of trip, and coverage options. However, it is important to compare the cost of insurance to the potential cost of not having it. For example, if you were to get injured or have to cancel your trip, the cost of medical expenses or lost deposits could far exceed the cost of insurance.

Comparing different insurance policies and providers can help you find the best coverage at a reasonable price. It is also important to read the fine print and understand exactly what is covered and what is not.

Types of Motorcycle Travel Insurance

Single trip insurance.

Single trip insurance is a great option for those who are planning on taking a one-time trip on their motorcycle. This type of insurance provides coverage for a specific trip, typically ranging from a few days to a few weeks. If you are planning a longer trip, you may want to consider annual insurance instead. Single trip insurance typically includes coverage for medical expenses, trip cancellation, and emergency assistance while on your trip.

Annual Insurance

Annual insurance is a good choice for those who plan to take multiple trips throughout the year. With annual insurance, you can take as many trips as you like within a 12-month period, with each trip typically lasting up to 90 days. This type of insurance provides coverage for medical expenses, trip cancellation, and emergency assistance, just like single trip insurance. It may also include coverage for personal belongings and rental vehicle excess.

Group Insurance

If you are planning a group motorcycle trip, you may want to consider group insurance. This type of insurance provides coverage for a group of people traveling together, typically up to 10 people. Group insurance can be customized to fit the specific needs of your group, and may include coverage for medical expenses, trip cancellation, and emergency assistance. It may also include coverage for personal belongings and rental vehicle excess.

How to Choose the Right Motorcycle Travel Insurance

Coverage limitations.

When choosing motorcycle travel insurance, it's important to consider the coverage limitations. Make sure the policy covers the countries you plan to visit and the activities you plan to do, such as off-road riding or racing. Additionally, check the policy's medical coverage, including emergency medical evacuation and repatriation. Look for a policy that covers the full cost of medical treatment, including hospitalization, doctor visits, and medication.

Exclusions are situations or circumstances that the policy does not cover. It's important to carefully read the policy's exclusions section to understand what is not covered. Common exclusions for motorcycle travel insurance include pre-existing medical conditions, reckless behavior, and participating in illegal activities. Additionally, some policies may exclude coverage for certain types of motorcycles or riding in certain areas.

Policy Inclusions

Policy inclusions are the benefits and features that are included in the policy. Look for a policy that includes coverage for trip cancellation or interruption, lost or stolen luggage, and trip delay. Additionally, consider policies that offer roadside assistance, rental vehicle coverage, and personal liability coverage. Make sure to read the policy's terms and conditions carefully to fully understand what is included. When choosing the right motorcycle travel insurance, it's important to consider your individual needs and circumstances. Carefully review the policy's coverage limitations, exclusions, and inclusions to ensure that you have the right coverage for your trip.

Motorcycle Insurance for International Travelers

Is motorcycle insurance needed for your travel plans.

People who love motorcycle travel say that there’s nothing like the feel of hitting the open road. The sense of freedom and possibility is intoxicating. Motorcycle travel is often less expensive and more eco-friendly than car travel – plus it’s so easy to find a parking space! But on the flip side, it can be dangerous. Very much so. An estimated 3,700 people die every day from road traffic accidents and half of the victims are motorcyclists, cyclists, or pedestrians. Having motorcycle insurance coverage included with your travel is absolutely essential. However, there’s a lot you need to know about inclusions, exclusions, and planning a safe motorcycle trip.

Proper Licensing Is Essential When Traveling Abroad

Getting motorcycle coverage as part of your travel insurance plans isn’t as simple as buying a policy and keeping it tucked in your travel papers. You must first have a motorcycle license that is valid in your home country. Your license must be valid for the type of bike you are riding. And lastly, you also have to have a motorcycle license which is valid in the countries you are visiting. Very often this takes the form of an International Driver’s Permit, which you can easily receive at any AAA office.

Not All Motorcycles Are Created Equal

You also have to be riding a motorcycle that meets your insurance policy’s definition of what a motorcycle is. Confused? A motorcycle is anything with two wheels that goes fast, right? Not according to many companies! Low capacity bikes, like those at 50cc, are sometimes included in general travel focused insurance policies. And some motorcycle specific policies exclude bikes that are over 200 or 250cc. Still, others have no limit, provided you purchase a premium policy add on or opt into sports/adventure coverage.

Don’t Leave Home Without A Helmet

Helmets are non-negotiable when it comes to the terms of motorcycle travel insurance. However, in many countries wearing a helmet is optional or simply not part of the culture. Plan ahead to either bring your own helmet or ask the rental company what kind of helmets they have available. You want to ensure you have a high-quality option available to you.

Stick To The Road MORE Taken

Coverage is always predicated on keeping your motorcycle on a legal road. In a world that’s made up of alleyways, dirt paths, short cuts, and side streets, it’s not always easy to determine what exactly makes a road a REAL road. The rule of thumb is that if a regular car would be able and allowed to drive on it, a motorcycle can as well. But off-road activities negate insurance coverage.

Keep It Legal

Insurance coverage will also be denied if you are participating in illegal activities. This includes street racing and anything else the insurance company deems to be a “needless risk”. In some cases, even participation in a legal event, such as a motorcycle rally or a sanctioned road race, might be trouble. If this would apply to you, you need to look at potential coverage through extreme sports policies.

Learn About Liability

Note that even if you’ve met all the requirements for motorcycle coverage in your travel insurance policies and are fully committed to following the rules, there are some additional considerations before you hit the road. Motorcycle coverage in your travel insurance policy is coverage for YOU. It’s designed to cover your expenses should you be in an accident and need medical attention. It doesn’t provide any coverage for your motorcycle should it be damaged or stolen. Nor does it include any liability coverage should you cause damage to another vehicle or injury to a person.

If you’re renting, your outfitter will often include such coverage in the price or offer to you as an add on. For owners, carrying a vehicle and liability insurance policy is often called “green card” insurance, especially in Europe. You might also hear it referred to as “border insurance”. That’s because if you cross a border on your bike, you’ll be asked to provide proof of liability coverage. If you’re dreaming of an epic, cross-continent adventure on your own bike, start your “green card” or other liability research early to make sure you’re covered.

Apply Common Sense

Remember that the greatest insurance is knowing your limits and engaging in safe biking practices. If you aren’t comfortable riding in rainstorms or dense urban traffic at home, you certainly won’t be in Bangkok or Mumbai. The same recommendations that keep you safe at home – from wearing sturdy shoes to always driving sober – are just as applicable anywhere else in the world.

Motorcycle Insurance For International Travel

Tom Roderick

If you’re desiring to roll some serious mileage on two wheels but the roadways leading to all the familiar haunts (Sturgis, Daytona, Laguna Seca, et al.) are seeming somewhat lackluster, the cure may be to ride outside your national comfort zone and travel abroad. A foreign escapade brings with it a litany of uncertainties, one being insurance and how to make sure you’re covered in the worst-case scenario, a long way from home in a place where English isn’t the ubiquitous language.

The easiest route for Americans is to simply pack up your bike and head north, eh. As similar as it may be, Canada is a foreign country, and for anyone wanting a trial run to familiarize oneself with passports, border crossings, metric road signs, currency exchange and the looming thrill of getting lost, Canada provides a relatively safe environment in which to experiment. And, to simplify the matter even further, most insurance policies cover you and your bike while in Canada. But don’t just assume, place a quick call to your insurance provider to first confirm you’re covered before riding out.

motorcycle insurance for international travel, As part of Harley Davidson s global 110th anniversary celebration over 5000 motorcyclists descended upon Mexico City to join in the festive occasion making this Mexico City s largest motorcycle parade in history

Although a part of the North American continent, traveling south to Mexico will provide a greater level of unfamiliarity than a Canadian experience. Not only are roadsigns metric, they’re written in Spanish and the deeper south you ride the less spoken English you’ll hear. You’ll certainly want to establish the terms of your insurance policy and examine purchasing additional coverage prior to crossing the border.

When traveling, also consider purchasing international medical insurance, which can provide coverage for emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation while traveling outside your home country. Emergency medical evacuations will get you out of a remote area and transported to a place where you can receive proper medical care, while repatriation coverage ensures your body will be properly transported home or to a nearby funeral home.

motorcycle insurance for international travel, It can happen anywhere anytime Best to be prepared

Travel medical insurance generally provides for:

  • Reimbursement for unexpected medical and dental costs
  • Help obtaining emergency medical transportation when you are injured
  • Payment for emergency medical evacuation services, including medical care
  • Emergency travel assistance to help you locate a local medical facility
  • Accidental death and dismemberment to help take care of your family if you are seriously injured or killed while traveling

If you plan on taking an overseas trip, the expense of such an endeavor requires you to consider trip-cancellation insurance. Trip cancellation (and trip interruption) insurance provides reimbursement of prepaid nonrefundable costs in the case of a cancellation or interruption due to a covered reason. With trip cancellation insurance, an unexpected occurrence such as illness, a visa or passport delay, business conflict, etc., will not cause you to forfeit a large sum of money.

When traveling to a country with an unrideable ocean in between, a motorcyclist must consider whether to ship his own bike or rent a motorcycle upon arrival. Another consideration is touring solo or purchasing a spot in a tour group such as Edelweiss .

motorcycle insurance for international travel, Europe is much more motorcycle aware and biker friendly than the U S English is widely spoken but not as much in rural areas Not to worry motorcycling is a universal language

If you plan to ship your own bike, the same advice above applies: check with your insurance provider to understand your current coverage and whether or not you need to purchase special international insurance, travel medical insurance, and trip cancellation insurance. If you’re traveling with a tour group and using one of their motorcycles, insurance for the bike is usually provided by way of your deposit. Traveling with a tour company also helps lessen the pressure and anxiety of touring in a foreign country with different laws, languages, procedures, money – they may even have you riding on the wrong side of the road.

Lastly, consider purchasing either a temporary international plan for your cell phone or a prepaid, disposable phone when you arrive. It also never hurts to have a good motorcycle GPS. Safe travels!

Benefits of International Motorcycle Touring with Travel Insurance

Embarking on an international motorcycle tour is an exhilarating experience that allows riders to explore new territories and soak in the beauty of different cultures. However, it’s important to remember that unexpected situations can arise, and having travel insurance specifically designed for motorcycle trips is essential. Let’s dive into why having motorcycle travel insurance is a must for riders venturing abroad.

International Motorcycle Touring

Enjoy peace of mind while exploring new territories on your international motorcycle tour with travel insurance.

Travel insurance provides a safety net that allows you to ride with confidence and peace of mind. It acts as a financial safeguard against unforeseen circumstances such as accidents, theft, or medical emergencies. With the right coverage, you can focus on enjoying your journey without worrying about potential risks.

Get emergency assistance, language support, and medical evacuation services when riding abroad.

One of the key benefits of motorcycle travel insurance is access to emergency assistance services. When you’re in a foreign country where language barriers may exist, having support from your insurer can be invaluable. Whether you need help finding a local repair shop or require translation services during a medical emergency, your insurer will have resources in place to assist you promptly.

In addition to language support, many travel insurance policies also offer medical evacuation services. If you were to sustain a severe injury while riding abroad and needed specialized medical care not available locally, these services would cover the cost of transporting you back home or to the nearest suitable facility capable of providing adequate treatment.

Protect yourself from unexpected costs and emergencies that may arise during international motorcycle touring.

International motorcycle touring comes with its fair share of risks. Accidents happen even to experienced riders, and mechanical breakdowns can occur at any time. Without proper coverage in place, these incidents could result in significant financial burdens.

By investing in motorcycle travel insurance before setting off on your adventure, you protect yourself from unexpected costs associated with accidents or bike repairs. Insurance policies typically cover expenses such as medical bills, bike repairs, and even trip cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances.

Travel insurance can provide coverage for personal belongings that might be lost or stolen during your journey. This ensures that you won’t have to bear the financial burden of replacing valuable items while on the road.

To sum it up, motorcycle travel insurance is a crucial aspect of international motorcycle touring . It offers peace of mind, emergency assistance services, and protection against unexpected costs and emergencies. So before you rev up your engine and set off on your next adventure abroad, make sure you’re adequately covered with the right travel insurance policy designed specifically for motorcycle trips.

Choosing the Right Travel Insurance for Your Motorcycle Adventure

When planning a motorcycle adventure, it’s crucial to consider factors like trip duration, destination, and personal needs when selecting travel insurance. This ensures that you have proper coverage in case of any unforeseen circumstances. Here are some key points to keep in mind when choosing the right travel insurance for your motorcycle tour:

Trip Duration and Destination

Consider the length of your trip and the countries you plan to visit. Different travel insurance policies may have restrictions on the maximum duration of coverage or specific regions they cover. Ensure that the policy you choose aligns with the duration of your motorcycle tour and provides coverage for all the destinations you intend to explore.

Comprehensive Coverage at an Affordable Price

Compare different travel insurance policies to find one that offers comprehensive coverage at an affordable price. Look for plans that include benefits such as emergency medical expenses, trip cancellation/interruption, baggage loss/delay, and personal liability coverage. Assess the limits and exclusions of each policy to ensure they meet your specific requirements.

Specialized Motorcycle Travel Insurance Plans

Consider opting for specialized motorcycle travel insurance plans designed specifically for riders’ unique needs. These plans often offer additional benefits tailored to motorcycle enthusiasts , such as coverage for bike damage or theft, roadside assistance, and protection against accidents related to riding motorcycles.

Medical Coverage

Ensure that your travel insurance policy includes adequate medical coverage during your motorcycle adventure . Look for provisions like travel medical insurance or travel health insurance that cover emergency medical expenses, hospitalization, ambulance services, and repatriation if needed.

Luggage Protection

Protecting your belongings is essential while traveling on a motorcycle tour. Look for a travel insurance policy that provides coverage for lost or delayed luggage so that you can have peace of mind knowing that you’ll be compensated if anything happens to your belongings during your journey.

Compare Policies

Take the time to compare different travel insurance policies before making a decision. Look at the coverage, limits, deductibles, and premiums offered by each policy to find the one that best suits your needs and budget. Consider reading reviews or seeking recommendations from fellow riders who have previously purchased motorcycle travel insurance.

Additional Considerations

  • Check if the policy covers pre-existing medical conditions if you have any.
  • Assess the level of customer support provided by the insurance company.
  • Look for policies that offer 24/7 emergency assistance services.
  • Evaluate the claim process and ensure it is straightforward and hassle-free.

Remember, having proper travel insurance is essential for any motorcycle adventure. It provides financial protection and peace of mind so that you can focus on enjoying your journey without worrying about potential risks or emergencies.

Understanding Coverage: Injury, Equipment, and Rental Motorcycles

When embarking on a thrilling motorcycle adventure , it’s crucial to ensure that your travel insurance provides comprehensive coverage. From protecting yourself against injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident to safeguarding your valuable gear and equipment, having the right insurance coverage is essential for riders. Here’s what you need to know about injury coverage , equipment protection, and rental motorcycles when choosing your policy.

Ensure Your Travel Insurance Covers Injuries Sustained in a Motorcycle Accident While Traveling

One of the primary concerns for motorcycle riders is the risk of accidents and potential injuries while on the road. Therefore, it’s vital to select a travel insurance policy that specifically covers injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Medical coverage should include expenses related to hospitalization, surgeries, medications, and rehabilitation.

Key Points:

  • Look for policies with comprehensive medical coverage that includes emergency medical transportation.
  • Check if there are any exclusions or limitations regarding pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Ensure that your policy covers both minor injuries and major accidents requiring extensive medical treatment.

Protect Your Valuable Gear and Equipment with Adequate Coverage

As a rider, you understand the significance of your gear and equipment. Whether it’s your helmet, riding jacket, or other accessories, these items are not only essential for safety but also represent a significant investment. Therefore, it’s crucial to choose a travel insurance policy that offers coverage for damaged or stolen personal belongings.

  • Opt for policies that provide sufficient compensation for lost or damaged gear.
  • Verify if there are any restrictions on specific items or maximum claim limits.
  • Keep records of receipts or proof of purchase to facilitate the claims process.

Verify If Rental Motorcycles Are Covered Under Your Chosen Policy

Renting a motorcycle can be an excellent option when traveling to new destinations. However, before hopping onto that rented bike, it’s important to verify if your chosen travel insurance policy covers rental motorcycles. This coverage ensures that you are protected from any liability or damages that may arise while using a rented bike.

  • Check the terms and conditions of your policy to confirm if rental motorcycles are included.
  • Understand the liability coverage provided for accidents involving a rented motorcycle.
  • Ensure that the policy covers both damage to the rental bike and third-party property damage or injuries.

By understanding the importance of injury coverage, equipment protection, and rental motorcycle inclusion in your travel insurance, you can ensure a worry-free and enjoyable motorcycle adventure. Remember to carefully review the terms and conditions of your chosen policy to ensure it aligns with your specific needs as a rider.

Proper Licensing for International Motorcycle Travel

Before embarking on an overseas motorcycle journey , it is crucial to familiarize yourself with international licensing requirements. Ensuring that you possess the necessary licenses to legally ride motorcycles in foreign countries will save you from potential legal troubles and make your travel experience smoother.

Researching specific licensing regulations based on each country you plan to visit during your international motorcycling adventure is essential. Different countries have varying rules and regulations and being aware of these requirements will help you avoid any unpleasant surprises along the way.

Here are some key points to consider regarding proper licensing for international motorcycle travel :

Familiarize Yourself with International Licensing Requirements

Take the time to understand the licensing requirements of the countries you plan to visit. Each country may have its own set of rules regarding motorcycle licenses , including age restrictions, permit validity periods, and specific documentation needed. By familiarizing yourself with these requirements beforehand, you can ensure that you meet all necessary criteria and avoid any issues during your trip.

Possess the Necessary Licenses

Ensure that you possess a valid motorcycle license from your home country before traveling internationally. Many nationalities allow their citizens to use their domestic licenses in other countries for a limited period. However, this may not be the case everywhere. Some countries require an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to your home country license.

Research Country-Specific Regulations

Researching country-specific regulations is crucial as each nation has its own unique set of rules. Some countries may require additional permits or certifications beyond an IDP or home country license. For example, certain regions may mandate riders to obtain a local driving license or complete a motorcycle safety course before hitting the road.

Research Country-Specific Regulations

Consult Local Authorities or Embassies

If you are uncertain about the licensing requirements for a particular destination, reach out to local authorities or consult your embassy for accurate information. They will be able to provide you with the most up-to-date details regarding licensing regulations, ensuring that you have all the necessary documentation in place before your trip.

Be Prepared for Potential Language Barriers

Keep in mind that language barriers may pose challenges when dealing with local authorities or rental agencies abroad. It’s a good idea to carry translated copies of your licenses and permits, as well as important contact information, to facilitate communication and avoid any misunderstandings.

By adhering to proper licensing requirements for international motorcycle travel, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. Familiarize yourself with the regulations of each country, possess the necessary licenses, and consult local authorities or embassies if needed. With these precautions in place, you can focus on exploring new horizons on your motorcycle adventure.

Staying Safe on the Road: Tips for Motorcycle Riders

Wear appropriate safety gear.

To minimize the risk of injuries while riding, motorcycle riders must wear appropriate safety gear. This includes helmets and protective clothing such as jackets, pants, gloves, and boots. Helmets provide essential head protection in case of accidents or falls, while protective clothing can help reduce the severity of injuries to other parts of the body. By investing in quality safety gear and wearing it consistently, riders can significantly enhance their safety on the road .

Follow Traffic Rules and Stay Alert

Following traffic rules is paramount. Riders should adhere to speed limits, stop at red lights and stop signs, use turn signals when changing lanes or making turns, and yield right-of-way when necessary. Maintaining a safe speed is crucial for both rider safety and the safety of other road users. It’s also important for riders to stay alert at all times by scanning their surroundings for potential hazards such as distracted drivers or pedestrians.

Regularly Inspect Your Motorcycle

Regular motorcycle inspections are vital for ensuring safe rides. Before each journey, riders should inspect their bikes thoroughly to identify any potential issues that could lead to breakdowns or accidents. This includes checking tire pressure and tread depth, testing brakes and lights, examining fluid levels (such as oil and coolant), and ensuring that all components are securely fastened. By performing these routine checks and addressing any maintenance needs promptly, riders can minimize the risk of unexpected mechanical failures on the road.

Perform Necessary Maintenance

In addition to regular inspections, motorcycle owners must perform necessary maintenance tasks as recommended by manufacturers. This may include oil changes, filter replacements, chain adjustments or lubrication, spark plug replacements, and brake pad inspections/replacements. Following a proper maintenance schedule helps ensure that motorcycles remain in optimal condition for safe operation. Neglecting maintenance can lead to decreased performance, increased risk of breakdowns, and potential safety hazards on the road.

Stay Prepared for Emergencies

Even with all the precautions in place, emergencies can still happen. Motorcycle riders should always be prepared for unexpected situations by carrying essential items such as a first aid kit, tool kit, spare parts (such as fuses or bulbs), and a mobile phone for emergency communication. It’s also advisable to have a basic understanding of motorcycle repair techniques in case minor repairs are needed on the road. Being prepared can help riders handle unforeseen circumstances efficiently and minimize disruptions to their journey.

Enjoying Peace of Mind with Motorcycle Travel Insurance

Motorcycle travel insurance is an essential investment for riders who want to enjoy their trips without the worry of unexpected expenses. By having adequate coverage, you can protect yourself financially from medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost belongings. Here’s why motorcycle travel insurance is a must-have for any rider.

Focus on the Experience, Not the Problems

When you’re out on the road motorcycling through breathtaking landscapes or exploring new destinations, the last thing you want is to be preoccupied with potential mishaps. With motorcycle travel insurance, you can have peace of mind knowing that if anything goes wrong, you’re covered. Whether it’s a minor accident or a major health issue, your insurance policy will take care of the expenses so that you can focus on enjoying your ride.

Protect Your Finances

Medical emergencies can happen at any time and in any part of the world. Without proper insurance coverage, these unforeseen events can quickly drain your bank account. Motorcycle travel insurance ensures that you are protected financially in case of accidents or injuries during your trip. It covers medical expenses, hospitalization costs, and emergency evacuation if needed. By investing in a good insurance policy, you won’t have to worry about hefty medical bills ruining your riding experience.

Trip Cancellations and Lost Belongings

Imagine this: You’ve planned an epic motorcycle journey across different countries for months. But just days before departure, something unexpected happens – maybe a family emergency or sudden illness – forcing you to cancel your trip. Without travel insurance, all those non-refundable bookings and reservations would go down the drain along with your dreams of adventure.

However, with motorcycle travel insurance in place, you’ll be reimbursed for prepaid expenses if your trip gets canceled due to unforeseen circumstances like illness or injury. If your luggage gets lost or stolen during transit or while staying at a hotel, your insurance policy will cover the cost of replacing those belongings. This means you can continue your journey without missing a beat.

Choosing the Right Insurance Provider

There are several reputable providers to choose from. Take the time to research different insurance companies and compare their policies, coverage limits, and prices. Look for providers that specialize in motorcycle travel insurance, as they understand the unique needs of riders. Reading reviews and checking customer complaints can also give you insights into the quality of service provided by different companies.

In conclusion, motorcycle travel insurance is an essential investment for riders embarking on adventurous journeys. The coverage options available provide peace of mind and financial protection against unforeseen circumstances. With the benefits of international motorcycle touring and the understanding of coverage for injuries, equipment, and rental motorcycles, riders can confidently explore new horizons.

Choosing the right travel insurance is crucial to ensure comprehensive protection throughout your motorcycle adventure. Proper licensing for international travel is also important to adhere to local regulations and avoid any legal complications. By following safety tips on the road and enjoying the peace of mind that comes with motorcycle travel insurance, riders can focus on their journey without worrying about potential mishaps.

To fully enjoy your motorcycle travels worry-free, consider investing in a reliable motorcycle travel insurance policy today. Protect yourself from unexpected accidents or emergencies that could otherwise derail your trip and incur significant expenses. Don’t let unforeseen events ruin your adventure – secure your peace of mind with comprehensive coverage tailored specifically for motorcycle enthusiasts.

Medical Travel Insurance for Adventure Motorcycling

This article was kindly contributed by Michnus who originally published it here .

We should have covered this topic a long time ago as it’s such an important part of overlanding and travel.

Travel health insurance must be one of the most important things to arrange for a trip and must be calculated as part of the cost and total expense of a trip. It is not really a negotiable purchase; no matter how long you will be travelling for, it is a must have.

If you have travelled without insurance, you may have been lucky and come away without serious injury or illness. However, here and there along the way, your luck could have run out. We can offer some advice and tips on adventure travel and travel insurance.

Obviously there is the option to not purchase insurance. Save the money and when things go seriously wrong start a GoFundMe campaign, freeload on parents and friends, or play on people’s emotions on social media for help.

Medical rescue and health insurance travelers

Emergency rescue can be very expensive.

Some question you need to ask:

  • Is the medical coverage for only in-hospital treatment or does it cover small out-of-hospital procedures? There are hospital plans and there is full coverage; make sure to understand what you are buying.
  • Very important—are there any treatment limits, i.e., how long will they pay if you are in ICU?
  • Does it cover any dental procedures or only pain relief? Check for everything from tooth fillings to jaw operations.
  • Do they only stabilize you and send you back home for treatment or do they only cover treatment in the country till you have recovered?
  • Do they pay upfront or must you pay and ask for reimbursement? This can be problematic when a procedure costs thousands of dollars and you do not have reserves for such events, or even if a hospital asks for an upfront security deposit.
  • Do they cover repatriation and medical evacuation?
  • Do you have the option to decide where you want to be treated for more serious illnesses?
  • Do they cover follow-up treatments needed for injuries? For example, physiotherapy for knee injuries.
  • Do they cover accommodation while you are recovering, or for your partner or spouse?
  • Do they cover injuries due to the mode of transport you will be using? This is more complex when riding a motorcycle—be VERY careful!
  • Do they cover you “off-road” or in rural areas?
  • Do they cover you above a certain altitude?
  • Ask what adventure activities are covered and which are not.
  • Will they allow you to renew your policy or do they force you to take out a new policy?
  • Can you take out coverage (or renew) when you’re already abroad?
  • Will they repatriate your vehicle if you are flown back to your country of citizenship for medical treatment?
  • If you have rescue/extraction coverage, will they actually extract you unless there’s an official report/travel warning issued by your home country or the one you are traveling in? With COVID some companies have excluded coverage and repatriation.

The Motorcyclist’s Guide To Health Insurance

So, Healthcare.gov is up and running, and you’re all excited about picking out health insurance, huh? Well, the site is working, but picking a plan can be brain-splittingly complicated (I nearly split mine doing research for this article), especially if you’re relatively healthy and grumbling about how you’ll never need the stuff anyway. But, if you ride a motorcycle, you can’t ignore the fact that your odds of needing healthcare just went up a little. Here are few things you need to consider:

The Motorcyclist’s Guide To Health Insurance

HMO vs. PPO

Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) focus on wellness. Preventative care and routine visits to your in-network provider are usually well-covered, with less attractive coverage for episodic acute care, diagnostics and the dreaded out-of-network provider. At face value, they often look like the cheapest route, but only when using in network providers : hospitals, labs, imaging centers, emergency medical transport services, pharmacies, therapists...all who have agreed to accept negotiated (lower) rates for whatever service. Stray outside the network, and coverage can be minuscule. HMOs tend to be more restrictive when it comes to seeing specialists or obtaining expensive diagnostic exams or treatments, and might not approve your provider’s recommendation until it can be reviewed by their own auditor (who may or may not be a physician, by the way). Get used to things like needing “prior authorization” before procedures and/or diagnostics, and needing a trip to your primary care provider before getting a pass to see a specialist.

Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs) also favor in-network providers, but may have slightly higher monthly premiums and co-pays in lieu of less restrictive management. They tend to have a larger pool of participating providers (because reimbursement rates are better) and less disparity between in and out of network coverage.

Implications For Riders: Injuries from a motorcycle accident typically cost more money to diagnose and treat than a typical trip to the doctor’s office. They’re also less amenable to choice when it comes to where you get the care you need. Consider what you’re most likely to need health insurance for : management of a chronic problem vs. treatment for an acute illness or injury? Also consider what kind of riding you do: touring (out of network or out of state?) vs. commuting (where in-network coverage is readily available)? Consider if any of this even matters to you, or your family, or whoever ends up getting stuck with the bills if you have a serious collision.

What About The Deductible?

This is the amount you have to spend (per calendar year) on eligible expenses before your insurance kicks in. This does not include what you spend on monthly premiums and co-pays. You’d like to think it’s that simple, wouldn’t you? It’s not. Each plan describes what can and can’t be applied to your deductible, and each defines “eligible expenses” differently. You literally have to read each and every plan’s definition. Yes, really.

Implications For Riders: One trip to the ER for a motorcycle accident is likely to take care of you entire deductible. Ouch. And, yay!

Continue Reading: The Motorcyclist’s Guide to Health Insurance >>

Out-of-Pocket Maximums: This is a nice number; the lower the better. Like some glistening beacon twinkling with promise at the end of the dark, scary, fire swamp of insurance plan comparison hell, this amount is the most you’ll pay per year for health-related expenditures. It includes what you fork over in co-pays, out-of-pocket expenses, and that big deductible. It does not include your monthly deductible. Nothing does.

Implications For Riders: All those things that aren’t covered by your plan (like that hand-carved knotted-pine cane or having Helga, your private duty physical therapist come to your office to work the bejesus out of your rotator cuff twice a week) get lumped into this pile. Sadly, the lower your out-of-pocket maximum, the higher your monthly premium. Darn.

Co-Payments and Co-Insurance: This is what you’ll pay every time you show up somewhere needing something from someone wearing rubber gloves. Rates are all over the map, from zero to what-the-heck-am-I-paying-you-for-every-month?

Implications For Riders: Here is where you find out how much the ER is going to cost you before you even set foot in the door. Pay close attention to this number.

As for a trip to the ER, if you need it, you need it, but coverage varies widely by plan. Co-pays are typically a couple hundred dollars, but can be way more if your plan is a stickler for in-network facilities. If you’re in any shape to request, and/or it’s medically safe to do so, EMS will usually transport you to the facility of your choice (within reason of course; they’re not taking you to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore when you crash in Philly). The transport service by the way, is an entirely separate cost.

For injuries that do require immediate evaluation, you’re most likely going to get sophisticated diagnostics (CTs, MRIs, etc.) and a handful of physicians in different specialties meddling with you. Consider this scenario: you have a nasty high side on an otherwise perfect track day. You’re bell was rung, and you wake up dazed and confused in the ambulance. You’re in a collar, and your hip hurts like a son-of-a-gun, especially when you try and move your leg. Good news! You’ve got a concussion, a C7 spinous process fracture, and the pelvic hematoma that ate Manhattan! You’re going home with some Percocet and a bag of ice, but not before you’re seen by the ER doc, a trauma surgeon, a radiologist (who doesn’t actually see you, but reads your imaging studies), a neurosurgeon, an orthopedic surgeon, and a hospitalist. Congratulations on meeting your annual deductible in one fell swoop!

What About Exclusions? It’s common for plans to exclude coverage for things like elective cosmetic surgery and dental work, but there’s usually more buried in the proverbial fine print. These are things that too often aren’t realized until you get that bill in the mail that triggers immediate chest pain and palpitations (relax, everyone covers that ). Insurance companies can be equal opportunity discriminators. Just like some plans won’t cover family planning (based on your employer’s religion) or abortion services in the case of rape (Michigan), some plans might not cover healthcare costs incurred from riding your motorcycle. Or being on the back of someone else’s. Or if you weren’t wearing protective gear when it happened. Or if you were skiing or bungee jumping or T-boned by a UFO. Coverage for things like physical therapy, home health care, certain drugs, and all kinds of unexpected health-related things may be minimal or non-existent. The only way to know this is to read your policy. All of it.

Implications For Riders: Motorcycle injuries are expensive, and the worst of them can render you worse than dead. Medical costs for the first year of a severe traumatic brain injury average over a million dollars, with annual costs thereafter of about $100,000 per year. Did I mention almost all plans have lifetime maximums? Mitigate your risk by picking a health plan that provides the best coverage for what you’re most likely to need, never riding without proper motorcycle insurance, signing up for a MSF Riding course, and by wearing all the gear, all the time.

Now...about that smoking habit of yours...

What is Travel Insurance and What Does it Cover?

While going on holiday should be a fun and enjoyable experience, sometimes the unexpected can unfortunately happen. Voyager Plus Travel Insurance is designed to give you financial peace of mind that you are covered should something unexpected happen, so you are not left out of pocket, in the event of a valid claim.

Travel Insurance Benefits

The following summary of Travel Insurance benefits are just some of the areas of cover included as standard across all levels of cover on our Voyager Plus Travel Insurance policy. Please read the policy wording here for the full cover available under the policy.

Cancellation or Curtailment

A Cancellation is where you are unable to start your trip, due to an insured reason. A Curtailment is where you have to end your trip earlier than expected, due to an insured reason.

This section provides cover for any unused and non-refundable travel and accommodation costs (including unused pre-booked excursions and course fees) that have been paid, or where there is a contract to pay, if it is necessary to cancel or curtail the planned trip because of any of the events specified in the policy wording .

Emergency Medical Expenses

Medical treatment in other countries can be very expensive. This section covers the cost of emergency medical treatment, outside your home country if you’re injured or suffer unexpected illness including with symptoms of or testing positive for COVID-19 during your trip, in line with the policy terms, conditions and exclusions. Cover also includes the cost of repatriation back to your home country if medically necessary.

Please Note : If you have pre-existing medical conditions and would like cover in case you need emergency medical treatment related to them, you will need to complete a medical screening to see if cover is available and pay the appropriate additional premium.

Covers the loss, theft or damage to your baggage, meaning: personal belongings, including clothing worn, and personal luggage owned or borrowed by you that you take with you on your trip, as well as your valuables as defined in the policy wording .

Please Note : Your gadgets may not fall under the Baggage definition in the policy wording and you may need to also purchase the gadget cover Option to cover them.

Personal Accident

In the event of a serious accident from which you suffer life changing injuries during your trip the policy will provide cover in the event of your death or permanent disablement because of the accident. Please refer to the policy wording for full details on this area of cover.

Please Note : Any immediate injuries you suffer from such an incident would be dealt with under the Emergency Medical Expenses section.

Travel Delay

No one likes to be delayed when travelling!

So with Voyager Plus Travel Insurance cover is available if the public transport (meaning any aeroplane, ship, train or coach) that you are booked to travel on is delayed by at least 12 hours. If your departure from your home country is delayed for more than 12 hours and you choose to abandon your trip, instead of a payment for delay, you are covered for the cost of the trip under the Cancellation or Curtailment section of cover.

Missed Departure / Journey Disruption

Cover for additional travel and accommodation expenses in the event you miss the departure of your public transport for your trip, due to a specified reason as defined in the policy wording .

This section also covers, in the event of a Catastrophe (as defined in the policy wording ), if you are forced to move from your pre-booked accommodation to allow you to continue your trip.

These are a few of the reasons why getting travel insurance is a good idea before you travel so that you are not left out of pocket should the unexpected happen. Furthermore, Voyager Plus Travel Insurance has a wide range of features and benefits, which are just not available on cheaper products, see the policy wording for full details.

Touring Travel and Repatriation Insurance

There are few pleasures greater than touring overseas on a motorcycle, with your panniers bursting at the seams and a twisty mountain route programmed into the sat nav.

There's a hell of a lot of preparation to do before you set off for the chunnel or ferry terminal, however at the very top of your list should be motorcycle holiday insurance - touring travel and repatriation insurance that specifically caters for riding motorcycles over 125cc (a common exclusion on 'normal' travel insurance policies).

Not only should it be your top priority, it should be the first thing you purchase after booking your channel crossing tickets(or flights if you’re going further afield)... Why?

Because it doesn't just protect you from the costs of emergency medical and repatriation, it can also reimburse you for some of your costs if the trip gets cancelled, i.e. something unplanned happens before you set off that prevents you travelling. So remember the words of Martin Lewis from Money Saving Expert... "As soon as you book" (ASAB)!

Motorcycle Touring Insurance can cover you for:

  • Up to £3,000 cancellation cover (specific reasons only)
  • Up to £10,000,000 of Emergency Medical Costs (reduces to £250k for trackdays)
  • Up to £100,000 of Emergency Repatriation Costs
  • Up to £1,000 if the only qualified or competent rider is taken ill, or is unfit or unable to ride (or if you cannot use your motorcycle for more than 8 hours)
  • A contribution towards damaged bike clothing your motorbike riding gear if it is lost, stolen or damaged in an accident

It's important to fully understand the cover you’re getting and go through the medical screening questions if you have pre-existing health conditions. If you don't declare your previous medical history, it could leave you in trouble with costs that aren’t covered if you get sick.

Quotes and Sales Line: Open 8:30am-6pm Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4pm Saturday

You can buy Touring Travel Insurance online 24 hours a day by clicking the button below. Motorcycle touring is covered as standard (even if you’re going off-road Charlie Boorman style), there are also options for trackdays and motocross if you plan on something more extreme.

Remember to complete the medical screening questions honestly and accurately to ensure your policy covers you for any pre-existing medical conditions.

Motorbike Touring Travel Insurance FAQs

Do BeMoto do travel insurance?

Yes, BeMoto offers travel insurance for bikers who want to tour in Europe, take part on overseas trackdays or off-road riding (whether that's Enduro, Motocross or cross-country adventure riding).

Most normal travel insurance policies exclude cover for riding large capacity motorbikes overseas, in other words they'll cover you for riding a 50cc moped or 125cc scooter but nothing more, so if you decide last minute to jump on a quad tour or hire a cruiser for the day you may not be covered for emergency medical and repatriation costs unless you buy specialist cover like ours.

BeMoto Travel and Repatriation Insurance (often known as "Repat") is also widely used for Euro trackdays and dirt bike holidays, including amateur racing events if you choose the additional options/packages on our policy - no cover is available for professional racing overseas.

Is it BeMoto who deal with the Travel Insurance and Repatriation claims?

No. BeMoto does not handle travel claims. The insurer has appointed CEGA Assistance to handle claims, including 24/7 emergency medical assistance and non-emergency claims. It is important to call CEGA Assistance on the number in the table above as soon as possible if any medical expenses are likely to exceed £500 or if you are admitted to hospital.

We can’t risk being a middleman delaying the process of getting you vital emergency treatment and we certainly don’t have specialist medical claims handlers, relationships with hospitals and medical experts or a team of foreign language speakers...

You, or someone in your party, should always call the CEGA 24 hour emergency assistance team on +44 (0) 1243 621 501 as soon as possible to get the insurer involved to ensure (a) you are taken to the most appropriate public/state medical facility and (b) it’s better if they agree treatment with the hospital in advance, where practical or possible, to avoid you committing to things they won’t agree to pay for.

For non-emergencies the CEGA general claims number is +44 (0) 345 258 7172 . Open Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm (closed at the weekends).

Clearly if you’re unconscious or in no fit state to make phone calls then that may mean calling them later, at the earliest possible opportunity. If you wind up in a private hospital through no fault of your own, the insurer reserves the right to move you to a public/state hospital at an appropriate time (being careful not to risk your recovery).

NEVER provide your payment card details to a hospital or clinic.

What's the difference between a "Repat" policy and my GHIC card?

EEA member states are obliged to treat UK citizens showing a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), however in some cases (for example hazardous sports injuries) EHIC/GHIC is sometimes rejected by the hospital – rightly or wrongly - or it may only cover part of the costs. That’s why travel and repatriation insurance is required for overseas trackdays and off-road riding, even at public hospitals the bills can quickly rack up.

Significantly neither does the EHIC or GHIC get you repatriated home (where medically necessary and safe to do so) or where necessary repatriate one other person who is required for medical reasons to stay with you.

Remember repatriation can be very costly, for example if you can't safely travel in a normal plane seat, or the airline won't accept the risk of travelling without medical supervision for the journey. BeMoto Emergency repatriation cover is on top of the medical limits (£100k limit alive, or £50k in a body bag).

In some cases insurers have paid for relatives to fly out, including accommodation, to support customers when stranded overseas whilst receiving treatment. Again an EHIC or GHIC card won't provide this kind of support when needed.

Find out more about the GHIC here (please note residents of the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands are not eligible): Travelling Outside the EEA (NHS page)

Note: Make sure you answer all medical questions honestly and accurately when buying any travel insurance policy. Pre-Existing conditions will always be excluded unless declared and accepted by the insurer (sometimes for additional premium). Ensure you buy the cover whilst still in the UK, before you leave, and it must cover the whole duration of your trip.

Does Repatriation Insurance cover private hospital treatment?

BeMoto Repatriation Insurance is a travel insurance policy (not private medical insurance). It's intended to cover emergency medical and repatriation costs, and much like with the NHS, you'd be expected to go to the local emergency department, if medically capable public facilities are available.

However, the insurers do understand that if you have an accident, e.g. whilst participating in a track or off-road event, you will be taken to the nearest appropriate medical facility, which could be public or private for initial treatment and assessment.

If you are admitted to a private facility, c all the Emergency Assistance Helpline as soon as possible and the insurers assistance team will advise what options are best for you.

Never give a private hospital your payment information, and don't agree to any costs without prior authorisation from the insurer. Once the insurer has agreed to treatment, they will deal with any requests for payment from any private facility, so you should resist any request from them to make payment.

What's the issue with private hospitals?

Travel insurance policies generally exclude medical treatment in private facilities (unless absolutely necessary and pre-authorised).

Just like in the UK, private hospitals may not be equipped to deal with accident and emergency admissions, or have the range of staff needed to provide such treatment, investigation and care.

As businesses, private hospitals also exist to make profit and are often unregulated with less frequent inspections compared to public/state facilities. This means that private hospitals have been known to over-treat, delay treatment or discharge, over-inflate costs and allegedly have been known to claim for treatment that never actually happened (ever wondered why you need multiple scans or had to stay longer than necessary?).

Be aware that some hospitals provide private ambulances or encourage taxi's to ensure you end up in their clinics, which if you're not careful can lead to you being trapped in their care with large bills to pay.

However, we appreciate that some countries, even within the EEA, do not offer the same high standard of care we are used to with the NHS, plus the language barrier can be daunting when you're on your own in a foreign hospital. Research the local facilities in advance and make sure you call the emergency assistance team at the very earliest opportunity.

Cruise Insurance Reviews

Best cruise insurance overall: nationwide travel insurance.

Nationwide Travel Insurance  is a long-standing and reputable brand within the insurance marketplace that offers cruise insurance plans with solid coverage and reasonable rates.

It has three cruise insurance options: Universal, Choice, and Luxury. The Nationwide Choice plan, for example, offers $100,000 in emergency medical coverage and $500,000 in emergency medical evacuation coverage.

The right plan for you depends on your budget and coverage needs. But each plan offers cruise-specific coverages like ship-based mechanical breakdowns, coverage for missed prepaid excursions if your cruise itinerary changes, and covered service disruptions aboard the cruise ship.

Best Cruise Insurance for Affordability: AXA Travel Insurance

AXA Assistance USA  offers three comprehensive coverage plans: Gold, Silver, and Platinum. Each of these plans offers coverage for issues like missed flights, medical emergencies, lost luggage, and more.

The highest-tier Platinum plan provides $250,000 in medical emergency coverage and $1 million in medical evacuation coverage. The baggage loss coverage is $3,000 per person, and their missed connection coverage is $1,500 per person for cruises and tours.

In addition, travelers can take advantage of AXA's concierge service, which provides an extensive network of international service providers. They'll be able to assist you with things like restaurant reservations and referrals, golf course information, and more. This service could come in handy if you're stopping at a variety of unfamiliar destinations during your cruise.

The coverage limits on AXA's policies are on the higher end compared to other providers. And you can buy coverage for a little as 4% of your trip cost depending on your age, travel destination, and state of residence.

Best Cruise Insurance for Seniors: Seven Corners Travel Insurance

Seven Corners Travel Insurance lets cruisers enjoy traveling in their golden years with the knowledge they're covered in the event of an accident or emergency. While other providers do offer coverage to those 80+ years old, Seven Corners is known for its affordable premiums while offering above-average medical expenses and medical evacuation coverage limits — two areas of travel insurance coverage that are even more important as we get older.

Seven Corners also offers the option of a preexisting conditions waiver and CFAR insurance at an additional cost, plus "Trip Interruption for Any Reason" coverage, which you won't find on many policies.

You can choose between the Trip Protection Basic or Trip Protection Choice plans, with the higher-tier Choice plan costing more but providing more coverage.

Best Cruise Insurance for Expensive Trips: HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance

HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance  offers three levels of trip protection: TripProtector Economy, Classic, and Preferred. The higher the tier, the more coverage you'll get for things like baggage delays, trip delays & cancellations, and medical expenses. But their premiums remain reasonable even at the highest tier of coverage.

Not only does the HTH Worldwide Trip Protector Preferred plan offer higher-than-average medical emergency and evacuation coverage limits ($500,000 and $1 million, respectively), but you'll also get a baggage loss coverage limit of $2,000 per person and coverage for trip interruption of up to 200% of the trip cost. You also have the option to add CFAR coverage for an additional cost.

Best Cruise Insurance for Exotic Locations: World Nomads Travel Insurance

World Nomads Travel Insurance  has been a top choice for comprehensive travel insurance for many years now. And it's a great option when it comes to cruise coverage, too.

Even the most basic Standard Plan comes with $100,000 in medical emergency coverage and $300,000 in emergency evacuation coverage. And you'll get higher coverage limits with their Premium Plan. Plus, unlike many other providers, World Nomads trip cancellation and emergency medical coverage include COVID-19-related issues.

What sets World Nomads apart from many other insurance companies is that its policies cover 200+ adventure sports. This can be important for adventurous cruisers who plan to take part in activities like jet skiing, scuba diving, or parasailing during their cruise.

Introduction to Cruise Insurance

Cruise insurance may offer unique coverage like missed port of call and medical evacuation coverage. You might not need the flight protections of a regular travel insurance plan if you're catching a cruise at a port near you, but medical and cancel for any reason coverage could be critical.

Understanding the Basics of Cruise Insurance

At its core, cruise insurance is your financial lifeboat, designed to protect you from unforeseen events that could disrupt your sea voyage. Whether it's a sudden illness, adverse weather, or other unexpected occurrences, having the right insurance can make a world of difference.

Why Cruise Insurance is Important

Picture this: You're all set for your dream cruise, but a sudden family emergency means you can't set sail. Or worse, you fall ill in the middle of the ocean. Without cruise insurance, you're not just missing out on an adventure, but also facing potentially huge financial losses. That's why securing cruise insurance isn't just recommended; it's a crucial part of your cruise planning.

Types of Cruise Insurance Coverage

Cruise insurance isn't a one-size-fits-all life jacket. There are various types of coverage, each tailored to protect different aspects of your cruise experience.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Coverage

This coverage is like your safety net, catching you financially if you need to cancel your trip last minute or cut it short due to emergencies, be it due to personal, health-related, or even certain work conflicts.

Medical Coverage

Being on a cruise shouldn't mean being adrift from medical care. Medical coverage ensures that if you fall ill or get injured, your medical expenses won't sink your finances.

Emergency Evacuation Coverage

In the rare case that you need to be evacuated from the ship due to a medical emergency or severe weather, this coverage ensures you're not left adrift in a sea of expenses.

Baggage and Personal Effects Coverage

Imagine reaching your dream destination only to find your luggage lost at sea. This coverage ensures that lost, stolen, or damaged baggage doesn't dampen your cruise experience.

Buying Cruise Insurance

Securing the best cruise insurance isn't just about finding the best price; it's about ensuring it covers all your potential needs.

When to Purchase Cruise Insurance

Timing is everything. Purchasing your insurance soon after booking your cruise can often provide additional benefits and ensure you're covered for any early surprises. As you get closer to your trip your coverage options may get more expensive, and certain providers may not be able to offer you coverage.

How to Find the Best Deals on Cruise Insurance

Keep a lookout for deals, but remember, the cheapest option isn't always the best. Balance cost with coverage, and ensure you're getting the protection you need at a price that doesn't rock your financial boat. A travel insurance comparison site like SquareMouth is a good place to compare multiple quotes from all of the major carriers at once.

How to Pick The Best Cruise Insurance for You

When buying travel insurance for a cruise, consider the additional risks that are specific to cruising. These include hurricanes and other weather-related concerns, strict cancellation terms, high pre-paid costs of a cruise, and the distance to emergency medical assistance.

To find the policy that's right for you, it's best to compare several different cruise insurance policies based on the pricing and coverage they provide. Remember too that all reputable insurance providers will offer a "free-look period." This allows you to return the policy you've purchased for any reason, within a specific time period, for a full refund.

The most important coverages to look for in cruise insurance are:

  • Medical coverage — This coverage will pay for medical bills outside the US. But because treatment can be more expensive while onboard, make sure your policy offers sufficient coverage ($100,000+).
  • Medical evacuation coverage — This coverage will transport you to the nearest hospital or even back home if you become sick or injured during your journey. But an evacuation from sea will be more expensive than one from land. So you'll want to make sure your coverage has sufficiently high limits ($250,000+).
  • Missed connection (missed port of call) coverage — This type of coverage will help you catch up to your itinerary if you miss your port of call for a covered reason, like a delayed flight on the way to the airport.
  • Coverage for hurricane warnings — With this type of coverage, you don't actually need to be affected by the hurricane. You can cancel and be reimbursed for your trip if the NOAA issues a hurricane warning. If you're cruising anywhere during (or on the tail ends) of hurricane season, this can come in handy. Just note: You can't buy travel insurance to cover a weather event once a storm or hurricane has been named.
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) — This is the most comprehensive coverage you can get, as it allows cancellations and reimbursement for pre-paid expenses for any reason. This can be a wise add-on for cruise coverage given the often higher prepaid expenses associated with cruising. See our guide to the best CFAR travel insurance options to learn more.
  • Preexisting conditions — This coverage ensures that no known health conditions are excluded from coverage. Obtaining a preexisting condition waiver usually requires purchasing your travel insurance soon after booking your trip.
  • Personal possessions insurance — Because of the events and fancy dinners cruise ships hold, you might take more valuable clothing or jewelry with you on a cruise. This type of coverage will insure your belongings against loss or theft while cruising.
  • Baggage loss and delay — This coverage will reimburse you up to a specified amount for essentials if your bags are delayed or if your bags get lost en route.

As a rule of thumb, you can expect to pay between 5% and 10% of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses for cruise insurance coverage. The price will vary depending on factors like your age, your travel destination, and whether you require additional coverage.

If you're booking a cruise, we recommend purchasing travel insurance when you make your first trip payment. That could be for the cruise itself or an expense like airfare to get you to your cruising destination. This way, if you have to cancel your trip, you'll have the most extended coverage period possible.

You can buy your own cruise insurance that isn't offered directly through the cruise line operator. In fact, this could be a better option if you want coverage for your travel to the cruise's departure point, not just for the cruise itself.

The difference between traditional travel insurance and cruise insurance is that cruise insurance offers more specialized coverage, for situations such as missing a departure port and more coverage for medical evacuations, since it's more expensive to evacuate someone at sea than on land.

Most cruise insurance includes coverage for missing a departure port, so you should be able to claim for a missed port. Just make sure you check the details of your policy before you file a claim, and before you travel so you know what compensation you're entitled to.
