General Info of Maihar

Maihar is a city and municipality in Satna district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Maihar is known for the temple of the revered mother goddess Sharda situated on Trikuta hill.

Origin of the name It is said that when lord Shiva was carrying the body of the dead mother goddess (Mai in Hindi) Sati, her necklace (haar in Hindi) fell at this place and hence the name 'Maihar' (Maihar = Mai+Har, meaning the 'necklace of mother').

History of Maihar

Maihar's history can be traced to the Paleolithic Age. The town was formerly the capital of the princely state of Maihar. The state was established in 1778 by Jogis,clan, who were granted land by the ruler of the nearby state of Orchha.(Maihar king developed the other state Vijayraghavgarh). The state became a princely state of British India in the early 19th century, and was administered as part of Bundelkhand Agency in the Central India Agency. In 1871 the eastern states of Bundelkhand Agency, including Maihar, were separated to form the new agency of Bagelkhand in Central India. In 1933 Maihar, along with ten other states in western Bagelkhand, were transferred back to the Bundelkhand Agency. The state had an area of 407 square miles (1,050 km2), and a population of 63,702 in 1901. The state, which was watered by the Tamas River, consists mainly of alluvial soil covering sandstone, and is fertile except in the hilly district of the south. A large area was under forest, the producer of which provided a small export trade. The title of the ruler was maharaja. The state suffered severely from famine in 1896–1897. Maihar became a station on the East Indian Railway (now the West Central Railway) line between Satna and Jabalpur, 97 miles (156 km) north of Jabalpur. Extensive ruins of shrines and other buildings surround the town.

Maihar is a city of 40,000 people (2011) in Maihar district, Madhya Pradesh.

Maihar is a religious pilgrim place for Hindus. Having the temple of Goddess Sharda, the deity of learning. The town was the capital of the princely state of Maihar before the indepence of India in 1948.

Maihar is well connected to other Indian cities by rail. The town is situated near to some big railway junctions.

By bus [ edit ]

It is well connected by bus to Jabalpur, Katni and Rewa. Taxis can also be booked for a return trip from Jabalpur.

Get around [ edit ]

There are ample number of auto rickshaw and cycle rickshaw in the city.

The best way to get to the temple would be auto rickshaw (roughly ₹10 per passenger from Railway station to the temple). Shared autos and Tongas, horse-drawn carriages, are also available for the journey to temple.

The temple is one of the best places to visit in Maihar. The temple is situated in a mountain. One can go by stairs (more than 1000 in number) or can book a cab from Temple's office. Ropeway facility is also available there. It takes around 4-5 passengers at a time and covers the distance to temple in 5 minutes. The ropeway and cab facility is only available in daytime.

Apart from the main temple, there are other places like Alha Pond , Akhara of Alha and Udal , Golamath temple . If you are feeling adventurous, visit the Maihar ka kila .

One can also visit the home of Baba Allauddin Khan, famous sarod maestro, who was the father and teacher of Ali AKbar Khan, and teacher of the sitarist Ravi Shankar. It is approximately 1.5 km from Maihar Railway Station, on the way to the Temple of Goddess Sharda.

• The name Maihar is created from the mixture of 2 words ‘Mai'(Mother)+ ‘Har'(Necklace).
• In line with the Hindu Mythology it’s aforementioned that once lord Shiva was roaming while carrying the body of mother divinity Sati, the necklace (har) of divinity Sati(Mai) fell down in Maihar, therefore people started calling its name Maihar.

Overall it was a pleasant stay and best option at Maihar. Date of visit 25 Dec'19. Staff: Very good and supportive, polite too. Location: Very close to mandir, so it was quite comfortable. It is 4-5 km from station and reserve auto will charge you 100 Rs. Room service: Descent and proactive. Room facilities & condition: Average, at par if one evaluate to the money charge, though it can be better. Kitchen & dining service: Ok not very impressive. Weather & ambience: Very good, I visited with family on 25 Dec'19. Also, they are quite supportive to accommodate you if you are checking early or checking out late, if they can and rooms available. So overall it is recommendable and good option.

I loved the MPT Surbahar, Maihar because it's run by Madhya Pradesh Tourism and we usually have a mentality that government MPT Surbahar, Maihars not that much good or provides a facility like private MPT Surbahar, Maihars. I stayed one night and had very good experience in terms of room cleanliness, staff behaviour, and their food, only one thing I want to improve that water pressure in bathroom should increase more. Right now water pressure isn't good.

Location is very prime considering mandir entry point is hardly 100-150 mtrs away. Though MPT Surbahar, Maihar has a restaurant, due to limited time we could not have food there. Staff was very courteous and co-opeeative. Hotel is ensuring proper sanitisation of person and goods at entry point. Also cleaning of lobby rooms and toilet block was good. The MPT Surbahar, Maihar is gated property with security system in place.

We reached late in the evening and got our nicely sanetised rooms. The rooms are well maintained and absolutely clean. Toilets are well-maintained with hot water geysers and hot air blower. Super tasty food and service is very fast. Nice restaurant. We are happy to have chosen the mp tourism's surbahar MPT Surbahar, Maihar at maihar. Mm t has delivered her assurances once again.

Location of the mp t surbahar is the best part. It is in the temple premises. The rooms are awesome. Very well maintained. Staff extremely courteous and helpful. They are all devotees of ma sharda and treat you with full respect. Food is extremely well prepared. Vegetarian only but then it is to be expected as it is almost in mandir premises. Overall an excellent stay

Booked dormitory for self, very clean sheets and sufficient blankets provided to ward off chilly conditions. Stayed on 27 dec. Highly recommended. Had food in Aaharam restaurant. Food was freshly prepared and delicious. This visit was the second time and I will always stay in Surbahar. Thanks to all the persons who made my stay a very comfortable one. Thank you.

I had planned this trip for my son's mundan at mama sharda temple. The MPT Surbahar, Maihar is literally at few meters at the entry of the temple. The complete atmosphere is so friendly and helpful. The best part was the food. My parents never like much any outside food but they were so happy eating the delicious food here. I really compliment the chef here.

The MPT Surbahar, Maihar has good rooms and just the perfect location. Hardly 500 metres from the ropeway makes it very convenient. The staff were very good and polite both in the restaurant as well as the front desk. They made sure to arrange food(lunch) for us inspite of us reaching much after the restaurant closure time.
