Before You Go

  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
  • If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.

Why should you book a holiday package to New York City?

When should you book a holiday package to new york city.

The best time to visit New York City is in the fall, when the weather is cooler and there are several big American traditions which see floats and parades taking to the streets. Some of the most popular events include Thanksgiving Day Parade in June, ice skating at Rockefeller Plaza, and the infamous New Years Eve Countdown in Times Square.

Where should you stay in New York City during your holidays?

For any holiday type in new york city:.

The Knickerbocker Hotel is a NYC landmark in the heart of Times Square with bespoke furniture, sweeping midtown views, and an electric rooftop bar. Take the Jamaica Train and connect via NYC Subway for the most authentic transport between JFK Airport and the Knickerbocker Hotel.

Conrad New York is an unpretentious 5-star hotel near Battery Park which offers daily connections to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. A taxi ride to this east side NYC hotel will cost you approximately 60 dollars and take up to 30 minutes.

For family holidays in New York City:

Novotel New York Times Square is a great central choice to match your the high-paced energy of your kids. Consider pre-booking your airport shuttle through the hotel's reception for a smooth transition from JFK, La Guardia, or Newark airports.

Adjacent to Central Park, the Quin Hotel commissions local graffiti artists to decorate the interior of the building for a truly one-of-a-kind experience in the Big Apple. Take a combination of the Jamaica Train and NYC Subway to show the kids a more authentic angle on New Yorkers.

For romantic holidays in New York City:

Gramercy Park Hotel shoulders one of the most secluded parks in all New York City and also boasts famous iconic artworks from Andy Warhol and Keith Haring in an ever-changing selection. A taxi ride from JFK to Gramercy Park will cost you approximately $60.

The Langham New York on 5th Avenue encompasses all your needs with comfortably intimate rooms, a fitness center, and comprehensive spa treatments. For even more freedom while you travel, consider renting a car at JFK, La Guardia, or Newark airports.

For luxury holidays in New York City:

The London NYC will have you feeling like you've visited two cities in just one trip! It features all-suites accommodation. You can travel in comfort to your midtown hotel like the locals do in an iconic NYC taxi from JFK Airport.

Refinery Hotel puts other accommodation options to shame with a 360 degree rooftop lounge and minimalist modern décor. Just a few blocks from Grand Central Station, it boasts a swanky bar and stunning downtown views. Consider taking the train for a classic experience when traveling in and out of New York City.

For budget holidays in New York City:

The Redbury New York is a 4-star hotel in the NoMad district which features a café, bar, and restaurant onsite so you don't get overwhelmed with choices on your next trip to the Big Apple. The Jamaica Airtrain is the fastest and least expensive way to transfer from midtown to JFK Airport.

Ameritania Times Square's location sets you in the heart of New York City's famous district, also within easy walking distance of the spacious Central Park. The most straightforward way to Times Square is via taxi from JFK Airport, which will cost approximately $60.

Meet your travelling companions and enjoy a scenic drive through the rolling hills of New York and Pennsylvania. Spend the next four nights just outside Manhattan in a quiet New Jersey neighbourhood.

This morning, a local guide joins us for a tour of New York's most famous sights, including Times Square, Central Park, Fifth Avenue, SoHo, the Financial District, and more. After free time for lunch, we'll take a trip back in time to the art deco era and take a tour of Radio City Music Hall. This magnificent facility, nicknamed the Showplace of the Nation, has been restored to its original opulence, and the stories and history are fascinating. On this guided tour, discover at deco masterpieces, learn the secrets of the great stage, and meet a Rockette. This evening, dinner is included at one of our favourite NYC restaurants.

Our favourite spot to see New York City from a bird's eye view is at the Top of the Rock, high atop the Rockefeller Center. A gift from John D. Rockefeller to Manhattan as a place for locals and visitors to marvel at the city he loved, it's the very best place to see the city from above. Then, take in the sights and sounds of iconic Times Square. The afternoon is free for you to explore of your own.

This morning, we visit the incredible 9/11 Memorial and Museum. The museum's 110,000 square feet of exhibition space is located within the archaeological heart of the World Trade Center site, telling the story of 9/11 through multimedia displays, archives, and a collection of monumental and authentic artifacts. It provides a link to the events of 9/11, while preserving intimate stories of loss, compassion, reckoning, and recovery. This afternoon, the coach will make convenient drop-offs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Natural History, and Central Park. Each has facilities for lunch on your own, or you can choose a restaurant in the surrounding area. This evening, board the cruise boat where you'll have the chance to dine, dance, and see Manhattan from the water. The three-hour cruise takes you by the Freedom Tower, the Statue of Liberty, and spectacular views as the sun sets and the city's lights come to life.

Enjoy a scenic drive today, travelling through New York and Pennsylvania, crossing the border back into Ontario by late afternoon.

There's nothing quite as exciting as being a stone's throw away from a world-renowned sight. Fortunately, The Langham, New York, Fifth Avenue and The Chatwal, a Luxury Collection Hotel, New York City are only a short stroll from Empire State Building. Book now and get the perfect one for you!

Here are the places The New York Times just recommended people visit in Toronto

Latest Videos

The New York Times just published the latest in their series of '36 Hours' travel articles and this time the city they've written about is Toronto.

While normally I wouldn't trust a non-local for suggestions on how to spend your time in the city, the Times does a better job on these articles than most publications, detailing the best ways to spend a day-and-a-half in a city, and their recommendations for Toronto are actually not bad.

Here's everywhere New York Times writer Ingrid K. Williams  recommended you visit while in Toronto (even if you live here).

Detailing the best-of-the-best, the most-un-skippable of all Toronto experiences, Williams suggests exploring Trillium Park (even though part of it is fenced off ), eating at Kensington Market's Sunny's Chinese , visiting MOCA  in the Junction Triangle and grabbing a drink at Crybaby Gallery  near Dundas and Dufferin.

Sunny's Chinese is a go-to spot for dinner in Kensington Market. Photo by Fareen Karim.

Attractions

Once you've exhausted the key stops, Williams suggests Massey Hall , Evergreen Brick Works , the Gardiner Museum , UofT's Philosopher's Walk, the Bata Shoe Museum , the Beach (as in, the neighbourhood), the McMichael and Zaal Art Gallery as must-see attractions.

Restaurants

Choosing a small selection of restaurants to be decreed as the "best" is kind of like picking a star in the sky and calling it the most beautiful. While not wholly wrong, it's also not entirely right.

In any event, Williams' list of Toronto's must-visit restaurants and food spots includes Patois , Bad Attitude Bread , Milky's Coffee , Taverne Bernhardt's , Bowie , Bathurst Local and White Lily Diner .

A smaller selection of small businesses made it onto the list (presumably because NYT readers will be busy visiting all those museums), but leading the charge are Easy Tiger Goods , Issues Magazine Shop and Etc Home .

If you're looking for more recommendations, I suggest Tusk for trendy womenswear, The Apartment Life for vintage decor and furniture and Acadia Art & Rare Books — a favourite of Guillermo del Toro's .

Williams also recommends a selection of hotels to stay at, like the Ace Hotel , the Drake Hotel , Ode or finding a vacation rental — specifically in or around Trinity Bellwoods.

John Sterling retires from Yankees broadcast booth at age 85 a few weeks into 36th season

NEW YORK (AP) — John Sterling, the hyperexcitable New York Yankees broadcaster known for decades of indelible, personalized home run calls, announced his immediate retirement Monday at age 85.

Sterling made the unexpected decision a few weeks into his 36th season as the Yankees’ radio play-by-play voice. He had cut back his schedule in recent years and was not with the team for its current trip to Cleveland and Toronto.

He called 5,420 regular-season games, the last against the Blue Jays on April 7, plus 211 postseason games. Sterling broadcast 5,060 consecutive games from September 1989 through July 2019 after starting with the Yankees as a pregame host.

Sterling will be honored in a ceremony before Saturday’s game in the Bronx against Tampa Bay.

“I have been able to do what I wanted, broadcasting for 64 years,” Sterling said in a statement. “As a little boy growing up in New York as a Yankees fan, I was able to broadcast the Yankees for 36 years. It’s all to my benefit, and I leave very, very happy. I look forward to seeing everyone again on Saturday.”

As the team evolved into its latest dynasty, winning four World Series titles from 1996 through 2000, a Sterling moniker for a player’s home run became as treasured a part of a Yankees identity as an initial set of pinstripes and a culminating championship ring.

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Jordan Montgomery works against the San Francisco Giants during the second inning of a baseball game in San Francisco, Friday, April 19, 2024. (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu)

From “Bernie goes boom! Bern, baby, Bern!” for Bernie Williams, to “It’s a Jeter jolt!” for Derek to “It’s an A-bomb from A-Rod!” for Alex Rodriguez, “The Giambino!” for Jason Giambi and ”A thrilla from Godzilla!” for Hideki Matsui, Sterling created a personal stamp that resonated through the clubhouse all the way to the bleachers.

For the latest group of Yankees, “It’s a Judge-ian blast!” became a familiar cry for Aaron, joined by “Nobody beats the Rizz!” for Anthony Rizzo and “David John makes long gone!” for DJ LeMahieu.

He could be obscure in recent years, using “Giancarlo, non si può de stoparlo! (Italian for ”You can’t stop it!) for Stanton and “A spettacolo oggi!” for Anthony Volpe (Italian for “At the show today!). He added ”He’s Juan-der-ful, marvelous” for Juan Soto this year, singing to the melody of George Gershwin’s “‘S Wonderful.”

But through it all, fans pined to hear him follow final outs with “Thuuuuuuuh Yankees win!” with an elongated “the.”

“Day in and day out, season after season, and city after city, John Sterling used his seat in the broadcast booth to bring Yankees fans the heartbeat of the game, employing an orotund voice and colorful personality that were distinctly, unmistakably his own,” the team said in a statement. “John informed and entertained, and he exemplified what it means to be a New Yorker with an unapologetic and boisterous style that exuded his passion for baseball, broadcasting and the New York Yankees.”

Sterling partnered with Jay Johnstone (1989-90), Joe Angel (1991), Michael Kay (1992-2001), Charley Steiner (2002-04) and Suzyn Waldman (since 2005). Sterling and Waldman were inducted into the New York State Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2016.

A native New Yorker, Sterling broadcast the NBA’s Washington Bullets and Morgan State football in his early years and gained notoriety for shrieking “Islanders goal! Islanders goal!” while announcing the hockey team’s games from 1975-78 along with those of the NBA’s Nets from 1975-80. Sterling’s first connection with the Yankees was during pregame shows while he worked on a WMCA radio talk show from 1971-78.

He moved to Atlanta and worked for the Braves from 1982-87 and Hawks from 1981-89 before switching to the Yankees.

“I grew up listening to Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn. I was the kid falling asleep, like many of you, to the radio,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday. “I have a romantic relationship with baseball on the radio. I’m bummed out about it, sad about it, but certainly just want him to be in a good spot and healthy moving forward.”

A previous version of this article reported incorrectly that Sterling worked for the Yankees for 34 seasons.

Back From Ukraine, a House Republican Makes the Case for More Aid

Representative Chuck Edwards, a first-term North Carolinian, has emerged as a vocal proponent for U.S. aid to Ukraine in a party that has grown hostile to it. He recently saw the war up close.

By Catie Edmondson

Reporting from Capitol Hill

Knowing a vote on another aid package for Ukraine loomed in his future, Representative Chuck Edwards, a freshman Republican, spent part of last week traveling across the country to see for himself how American dollars would be used in the nation’s fight to fend off Russian invaders.

What he witnessed as he and a bipartisan group of lawmakers traveled across Ukraine over four days — a dozen air raids, an onslaught of drone attacks, and the sites of gruesome atrocities against civilians — left Mr. Edwards and his colleagues vowing to press Speaker Mike Johnson to push forward on a measure to provide more aid for the war effort.

They told President Volodymyr Zelensky that their visit had given them a “new appreciation" of what his country was facing, Mr. Edwards said, and that they would lobby Mr. Johnson to make sure that American aid did not dry up.

The trip came at a critical time for Ukraine aid on Capitol Hill, as Mr. Johnson searches for a path to advance a fresh funding package for the embattled nation amid vehement opposition from his right flank. The fate of the effort rests in part on mainstream Republicans like Mr. Edwards, who has previously voted in favor of aid to Ukraine, who are willing to join Democrats in lending their support to the cause.

In an interview with The New York Times, Mr. Edwards, who last month easily fended off a primary challenge to his right from a candidate who opposed U.S. aid to Ukraine, discussed the urgency of backing the war effort there, what he saw during his trip , and the difficult politics of the issue.

This interview has been edited and condensed for length and clarity.

Why did you decide to go to Ukraine?

The news is really falling off in America on what’s taking place in Ukraine. It’s taken a back seat to so many other things, other issues that are important here in the country. And knowing that Ukraine is running up against a deadline, I thought that it was important for me to go over and participate in a fact-finding mission and get a better firsthand account of actually what’s taking place over there, as we approach the critical and important decision in whether or not — or how — the U.S. should assist in Ukraine.

What were your major takeaways?

At the highest level, the conclusion that I came up with is that Ukraine is either going to continue to be a democracy or it will fall to the hands of a Marxist, socialist, murderous dictatorship. And it cannot — it will not — remain a democracy if the United States doesn’t intervene.

Ukraine has a good base of strong men and women that are willing to step up and defend their country. They don’t have the resources to do it. President Zelensky told me of a number of brigades — I won’t quote the number, but a number of brigades — that have men but no equipment. They’re taking 10 Russian shells to every one that they can return. And if they don’t receive equipment and ammunition soon, their democracy will crumble.

The stories of the inhumaneness that’s taken place over there — it’s very brutal and horrendous. And the United States has always stood for freedom and liberty and justice. And it would be a travesty for us to take a back seat and allow that to happen. What I think that I see taking place in Ukraine right now is very much what took place prior to World War II.

Was there a specific story that really stood out to you?

In the village of Bucha, 136 elderly people, women and children were crammed into a very small basement of a school. It was dark, dank, moldy, musty, nasty. And they were forced to live there for 27 days. People were dying. They were piling bodies in the corner.

I had the opportunity to stand in that corner and visualize dead, decaying bodies. And one story that stuck out in particular was where a woman said there was a 7-year-old child in that basement that was clearly dying. He was about to be among the deceased. He was sick. He was feverish. He was suffocating. He was panicking. The prisoners in that basement went upstairs pounding on the door and gotten the attention of the Russian soldiers and the one that came to the door’s reply was: “Let him die. This is war.”

I think that that statement alone illustrates the cruelty of what’s taking place now and why Putin must be stopped. And he’s made it clear he’s not going to stop at Ukraine.

His intent is very clear, and the world’s watching. Our enemies are watching. They’ve watched the horrendous withdrawal from Afghanistan. They watched the Biden White House sit on its heels and allow this invasion of Ukraine to take place. China is certainly watching to see how we will respond. North Korea is watching. America has the opportunity right now to show that we still are a superpower. That we’re not going to allow bullies to pick on those folks in the world that cannot defend themselves.

There have been questions as to whether Speaker Johnson was even going to allow Ukraine aid to receive a vote in the House. Did you have a message to President Zelensky about what the House was likely to do?

I can’t speak for the House in general. But the message to President Zelensky from the six members of the congressional delegation that went over there is, that we had gained a new appreciation of the duress that the country is under, and that we would be returning to the United States and trying to convince Speaker Johnson and others to move forward and support Ukraine.

I am curious what you hear from your constituents at home about this and how you have this conversation with them. Your primary challenger was against sending aid to Ukraine — and you stood up and made the argument for it.

I’ve polled the people in my district. And they’re in favor, three-to-one, of helping Ukraine. The few that are against, I don’t believe are totally opposed to helping, but they insist that we need to pay as much attention to what’s going on right here in America. We need to secure our own border; that we need to pay attention to the debt load that we have in America right now.

So I don’t believe they’re adamantly opposed. They’re just insistent that we also deal with our own problems — and they’re right. I believe that we can still continue to do both. Joe Biden absolutely needs to reverse the 64 executive actions that he has taken that relaxed and helped open our border. That can be dealt with as a separate issue.

I believe that there’s a way that we can responsibly help Ukraine. There’s Russian assets that can be seized. One of the key takeaways that I had after leaving Ukraine and meeting with the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, is that U.S. sanctions against Russia and world sanctions against Russia are not working. Any war is fought on many fronts. Choking off Putin’s profits — oil profits, banking profits — would be another front where we could fight this war.

Your argument for why the U.S. should continue to send aid to Ukraine strikes me as a very traditional G.O.P. argument, but it’s not the prevailing view in your party right now. Do you feel you’re in the minority on this issue?

I believe most of the conference, and most of Congress will side with my argument. I believe that America is capable of walking and chewing gum.

We’re to the point now where we have to do that, because the situation in Ukraine has become so dire. We don’t have the luxury of waiting until we fix all of our problems. We’re going to have to work on them simultaneously.
