The Red Square

Red Square, Moscow

The Red Square is Moscow’s most important site. Many foreigners mistakenly think that the Red Square only gained prominence during the Communist regime. In fact, it is the most historic sight in Moscow - dating back to the 11th century. Throughout its 1000-year-old history, the Red Square has been at the epicentre of political, social and religious life in Russia. Much of the original red-brick buildings that were built in the medieval times have survived to the present day. Along with the architecture, the character of this eminent square remains unchanged. Today, the Red Square still hosts some of the country’s most important events like the world-famous New Year’s celebrations and the headline-catching parade on Victory Day.

Whether you plan to travel to Moscow specifically to see the Red Square or if it’s only going to make up a small part of your trip, the Kremlin and Red Square complex won’t disappoint.

Did you know? There are quite a few “Red Squares” in Russia, many of which aren’t even red! The name comes not from the colour, but rather from the word beautiful which is very similar to the Russian word for red.

Why Visit the Red Square?

  • History: Mongols, Tsars, Napoleon and Communists; the Red square has seen them all. The square’s history is fascinating and much of it can still be appreciated in the medieval architecture that stand in the square to this day.
  • Celebrations: The Soviets used the Red Square as their stage to show off to the world. With Putin, the ginormous military parades still continue and the nation’s main holiday, New Year’s Eve, is celebrated on the square by crowds in the hundreds of thousands.
  • Beauty: Fringed by the century-old walls of the Kremlin, with St Basil’s Cathedral at its centre and a view onto the Moscow river; the Red Square is Moscow’s most breathtaking site.

The History of the Red Square

Since the Kremlin was built in the 14th-century, it’s always had an open, square-shaped space on its Eastern side. This area was purposefully kept clear by the order of Ivan the Great so it could be used as shooting range in war. Later, after the Times of Trouble had subsided and Moscow was secure from invading Poles, what had been a battlefield began to turn into a bustling hub of commerce. Soon the square had 700 traders’ stalls and, as early as 1561, St Basil’s Cathedral was erected.

As the Muscovy princedom which ruled from the Kremlin became ever more powerful, new palaces, churches and towers were added on the inside of the Kremlin and on the Red Square. A moat was dug between the Kremlin and the square, part of which was kept free of water so that lions, tigers and even elephants could be kept for the Tsar’s entertainment!

Moscow, Russia

After Peter the Great declared St Petersburg the empire’s capital, the Red Square lost its status as the centre of the Russian state. While the Tsars still visited the Kremlin’s palace, the Red Square only became an eminent part of Russian society 300 years later when the communists moved the seat of power back to Moscow.

The Soviet Union saw the Red Square change for both the better and worse. The same sorry fate of religious symbols in the USSR befell the exquisite,16th-century Kazan Cathedral and the magnificent Resurrection Gates which guarded the entrance to the Red Square. The Soviets, however, didn’t just destruct. They erected monuments in honour of their comrades, the most famous of which is, of course, Lenin’s mausoleum.

Did you know? The walls of the Kremlin used to be painted white to protect the brickwork. They only stopped painting them in the 19th-century.

The Main Sights on the Red Square

The Kremlin

The towers and thick, medieval walls of the Kremlin swallow up most of the view from the Red Square. So imposing is the Kremlin’s presence that it’s easy to miss the other treasures around the Red Square. Behind its red walls lie fascinating cultural treasures like the Russian Diamond Fund and the Annunciation Cathedral. It is also home to Putin’s official residence.

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The eeriest site on the Red Square is easily missed due to its low, dark profile. Built under the shadow of the Kremlin’s walls, Lenin’s mausoleum is minuscule compared to the surrounding architecture. Its pyramidal structure is also far too small to accommodate even a fraction of the crowds who line up for hours outside. If you’re prepared to wait for the chance to slowly walk around Lenin’s waxen body for just two minutes, then make sure to arrive an hour before opening.

Did you know? Stalin was displayed alongside Lenin in the mausoleum till the 60s when Stalinism began to be scrutinised. Today, you can find Stalin along with many other notable comrades, such as Yuri Gagarin, buried behind the mausoleum where the moat and animal pit once lay.

St Basil’s Cathedral

Russia’s most emblematic symbol was built by the order of Ivan IV to celebrate his capture of Astrakhan and Kazan. The church's design that was meant to represent a bonfire has no comparison. No orthodox church, past or present, has ever been built that way.

Lobnoye Mesto

The oval, stone platform near St Basil’s is often overlooked. But, when Tsars still lived in the Kremlin, this was the site which all visitors to the Red Square gathered around. On this historic platform, speeches were given to citizens, heads were lost in executions and war spoils were shown off.

State Historical Museum

Though it looks centuries old, the building on the upper slope of the Red Square is a relatively new addition; having been built in the 19th-century. Unlike all the other buildings, it wasn’t built by a tsar. Instead, passionate Slavic historians grouped up to gather enough funds to create the “greatest museum in Russia”. Its collections are impressive: with 9th-century relics and the Romanov’s personal belongings.

Built in the 1890s to serve as a shopping centre for Moscow’s elite, it only filled its purpose for a few short years before the Bolsheviks took over. During the USSR, it served many roles. In the beginning, boutiques were turned into communal flats, which were later turned into offices which finally were remade into soviet shops. During its history, it housed the body of Stalin’s second wife after she committed suicide as well as a secret, luxury boutique called “section 22” which sold outfits like Chanel suits to those well-connected with the ruling party.

Did you know? The Kremlin is the largest fortress in Europe still in use.

Celebrations on the Red Square

In days gone by, plump patriarch’s riding on donkeys used to the main event on the Red Square’s calendar but now things are a lot more sophisticated. While the line-up of smaller, seasonal events - such as formula 1 races and fashion shows - is constantly updating, the main events such as New Year’s Eve and the Victory Day Parade take place each year without fail.

Victory Parade

May the 9th, the day the Great Patriotic War ended, was the USSR’s most important holiday. Though today New Year’s has regained its place as Russia’s most popular holiday, Victory Day is still celebrated by practically everyone. The most spectacular parades have taken place on the Red Square since 1945 and with each passing year, the parades only get bigger and better! Along with the show of military might, citizens gather in the thousands to form The Immortal Procession; carrying pictures of dead relatives on sticks as a sombre reminder of the toll the war took.

Spasskaya Tower Military Music Festival and Tattoo

Though this celebration might not be well- known to foreigners, it is an international event. Since beginning in 2007, the band of the Russian army has invited twelve other country’s bands to perform with it each August on the Red Square. Music and military lovers alike come from all over Russia and beyond especially to watch this huge performance.

New Year’s Eve

Russian New Year celebrations are legendary and the Red Square’s annual bash-up is the greatest legend of them all. In the run-up to the 31st, the whole of the Red Square is transformed into a winter wonderland with a giant ice rink, ice slides and a village-sized Christmas market. On the night, thousands pack into the square to drink, eat, dance and sing the night away. Russia’s best-loved performers grace the huge stages on the Red Square and, after Mr Putin’s New Year’s speech, the jaw-dropping fireworks are released.

Did you know? In 1987 a German pilot landed his plane right in the Red Square. Mathias Rust was just 18 years old and a bit of a daredevil. Amazingly, he flew from Helsinki to Moscow without the Soviet authorities spotting him.

Visit the Red Square in Moscow Today

The Red Square is one of the easiest sights to see in Moscow. There are no tickets and no queues. There aren’t even security checks. However, getting into one of the many sites within the square, especially Lenin’s mausoleum, can be a challenge and requires planning.

For attractions such as the Kremlin and the State Historical Museum, tickets must be bought in advance during the summer high-season to avoid dreadful queues. Lenin’s mausoleum has the longest queue but, because entrance is free, the only way to circumvent the queue is to arrive one hour early. It is also vital to google which days the mausoleum will be open during your trip as it only opens a few days a week for three hours at a time. If visiting the Kremlin, it is unbelievably helpful to download the free Kremlin app before visiting. The Kremlin is filled with so many different buildings spread out over such a large area that without the app it’s incredibly easy to get lost.

Day 5 Golden Ring: Vladimir and Suzdal

Today we depart Moscow and drive to two of the most picturesque Golden Ring cities, Vladimir and Suzdal. 190km east of Moscow, Vladimir was the former capital of medieval Russia and is one of the region’s oldest settlements. Visit spectacular landmarks including the white and gold Assumption Cathedral and the Golden Gates, constructed in 1164 and nearly obliterated in the Mongol invasions. After lunch, we head to our overnight destination of Suzdal, one of the most charismatic villages on the Golden Ring route. With wooden houses straight from the pages of a storybook and horse-drawn buggies plying its quiet streets, Suzdal has managed to retain a tranquil, rural atmosphere that’s changed little over a span of centuries.

We’ll walk the ramparts of the Old Kremlin and admire the divine frescoes and classic wooden architecture of the Church of the Transfiguration.

Day 6 Golden Ring: Sergiev Posad

Following the Golden Ring route 170km to the east of Suzdal, we head for Sergiev Posad on a scenic drive through the Russian countryside. The spiritual heart of the Orthodox Church, Sergiev Posad is known as the Russian Vatican thanks to the gleaming blue and gold cupolas scattered all around the town. Our afternoon will include a visit to the resplendent Trinity Lavra, dedicated to Russia’s patron saint. Built in 1423, the working monastery is a World Heritage site, with a cathedral brimming with works by many of Russia’s greatest religious painters.

In the evening, we board a Sapsan – a Russian high-speed train – which will whisk us to our next destination, St Petersburg, completing the 700km journey in just four hours. On arrival in St Petersburg, you’ll be transferred straight to your centrally located hotel.

Day 7 St Petersburg: historical city tour

Meet your friendly and knowledgeable St Petersburg guide in the lobby and begin your discovery of Russia’s ‘Cultural Capital’ with a walking tour of the city’s most popular attractions. Your walking tour will include Nevsky Prospect, St. Petersburg’s fanciful high street, the Anichokov Bridge and Palace, viewpoints over the Fontaka and Moika Rivers, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, Palace Square and the Senate Square, with its bronze horseman monument to Peter the Great and the Church of the Spilled Blood. You’ll also get the chance to stroll the grounds of the magnificent Peter and Paul Fortress on the banks of the Neva River, a burial place for the Russian emperors from Peter the Great to Nicholas II.

After lunch, we’ll pay a visit to the Aurora Cruiser, the legendary ship that supposedly sparked the Russian Revolution by firing the first shot, signalling the revolutionaries to storm the Winter Palace.

As an option* for this evening, we invite you to enjoy an evening of classical music at one of St. Petersburg’s beautiful palaces, with this 2-hour experience. Take a seat in the magnificent Hall of the Palace. Then, lose yourself in much-loved works by Russian composers such as Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and others, all played by an orchestra of St Petersburg. As the perfect curtain raisers, enjoy an interesting pre-concert tour of the palace's halls and a glass of sparkling wine.

Day 8 St Petersburg: Peterhof

50km from St Petersburg is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Peterhof, the ‘Russian Versailles’. We’ll travel by fast boat to avoid city traffic. Once the opulent summer resort of the Romanovs, today Peterhof is an open-air museum and a testament to Peter the Great’s contribution to the city’s development. Marvel at the brilliance of the 18th-century architects and artists who designed the Grand Palace, the Lower Gardens and some 150 stunning fountains on the palace grounds.

As an option*, we will visit the recently opened Faberge Museum, a private collection of over 4,000 Faberge Eggs and other bejewelled objects of desire, elegantly displayed inside the stunning Shuvalov Palace.

Day 9 St Petersburg: Hermitage and canals cruise

Today starts with a walk to the Palace Square to admire the grand designs of the Tsar’s Winter Palace, now a part of the State Hermitage Museum complex. In the afternoon, it’s time to see St Petersburg from a different angle on a boat ride through the city’s maze of canals. We’ll pass under some of the city’s 400 bridges and casually drift past 18th-century palaces and striking architectural landmarks. Affectionally referred to as the ‘Venice of the North', St Petersburg’s romantic atmosphere rivals Venice and Paris, with the bonus of far fewer tourists!

Enjoy special optional* evening activity – attending a Russian folk show at Nikolaevsky Palace. Alternatively, ask us about reserving a table and transfers to one of the city’s most famous restaurants.

Day 10 St Petersburg: Pushkin and Palovsk

Experience the extravagance of the Imperial rulers on an excursion to the suburban estates of Tsarskoe Selo (Tsar’s village). Now part of the nearby town of Pushkin, the vast estate is made up of acres of exquisite parks and gardens. Dotted with remarkable structures like the Marble Bridge and the Creaking Pagoda, constructed for the amusement of Catherine the Great, the Empress once strolled these grounds, accompanied by her beloved Italian greyhounds. Here you’ll find the baroque Catherine Palace, a dazzling testament to Catherine’s love of luxury and royal excess. We also explore the stately neoclassical Alexander Palace, whose tumultuous history paints a fascinating portrait of the Romanov family. We’ll also visit Pavlovsk Palace and Park, commissioned by Catherine as the summer residence of her son, Emperor Paul I. The 600-hectare park is one of the largest landscaped parks in Europe.

Optionally* you may choose to take a tour of Yusupov Palace on the Moika River, best known for being the scene of the assassination of Rasputin.

Day 11 Departure from St Petersburg

Our journey through the historic heart and cultural soul of Russia has come to an end. After breakfast and check-out, you’ll be transferred to the airport, filled with lifelong memories and unforgettable impressions of this captivating country.

We would recommend this tour to our friends and prospective travellers...

Vladimir, Suzdal and Posad –

On the 5th day, we travelled with Irina and our driver to Vladimir and Suzdal – as with our experience in Moscow this tour did not disappoint. Irina was old school and we benefitted by her experience and mature viewpoint. The 2 days of this part of the tour was superbly balanced with the previous days spent in Moscow. The itinerary was impressive.

St Petersburg –

The arrival in St Petersburg was after 9 pm and at the time the Hotel reception was chaotic with guest arrivals. The combination of a busy fast train and pesty Chinese travellers many of whom do not possess spacial awareness, plus vehicle transfer by a driver who seemingly was in an urgent hurry we have left abruptly at the entry of the hotel.

Having been spoiled with the quality of accommodation in Moscow and Suzdal we felt the room assigned to us at Solo Sokos Palace left a lot to be desired. The day following we upgraded to a suite, paid additional to our tour cost.

St Petersburg was in full flight tourist wise –  the longer we stayed the more familiar the city became.

By this time both of us were ill with the flu and we had to manage our excursions to suit the daily schedule. But not to be deterred we made the most of our days touring, and like all that have been to this city before us, we fell in love with St Petersburg.

Our guide Julia was young and eager to impart her knowledge of this great city with its amazing history.  We have little reason to criticize Julia although if there was any reservation it was her to do with her maturity – there were times we felt she was on task to cover her content a little to robotically. That said we sorted out things and cut short parts where we thought were repetitive. Mind you we did not doubt he knowledge of history and if we felt we had our fill of Tzars and Tzarinas we gently persuaded her to vary the tour. I have an interest in the siege of Leningrad during WW2 and the Stalinist period pre and post-war – to which she accommodated.

She was very ill herself the last day of the tour and we cut short the tour because of this although she was prepared to soldier on and insisted she arranged a refund for this part of the tour. In a few words, we Loved St Petersburg.

We would recommend this tour to our friends and prospective travellers,  the tour ran seamlessly and we did not want for anything.

Going to Medieval Times Is Even Better as an Adult

The uniquely grown-up joys (and surprisingly good food) of over-the-top Middle Ages dinner theater

Woman wearing paper crown waves a flag while screaming; next to hear a couple looks on.

Often drenched in ’90s nostalgia, there is no place on earth quite like Medieval Times. I had been to Medieval Times — essentially Middle Ages dinner theater with horses, sword fights, and a simple meal that you eat with your hands — a few times in the ’90s, at least once on a school field trip and another time with my family. I had fond memories of the novelty of tearing apart a roasted chicken with my hands, sipping nonalcoholic daiquiris out of a fluted souvenir glass, and perhaps most importantly, wearing a crown with flowers and ribbons that streamed down my back. Medieval Times is, of course, intended to inspire this kind of awe and joy in children who actually believe that the knights are real. But as I realized a few weeks ago, going to Medieval Times as an adult fucking rules.

A few weeks ago, after hearing that a friend had never been, I rounded up a group to make the journey to the castle. The first Medieval Times location opened in Spain in 1973, and the budding chain expanded to the States a decade later with its first U.S. location in Florida. Now, there are 10 castles scattered across the United States and Canada, which have, according to the chain, hosted more than 72 million lords and ladies (read: guests) across the decades. As the show’s story — which is the same at every location — goes, guests are attending a feast at the castle of Queen Maria Isabella and are divided into color-coded cheering sections for knights that compete in the tournament, jousting their way to becoming the Queen’s champion.

As bonafide adults unleashed into the castle, our group’s first stop was, of course, the bar. In addition to flagons (okay, pint glasses) of ale (Shiner Bock, but whatever) and glasses of wine, there were also a slew of cocktails, including boozy frozen daiquiris and fruity rum punch, all of which I could now legally purchase. I only barely winced at the price of my punch and commemorative cup, which after tip was somewhere in the neighborhood of $30. Exorbitant, yes, but sometimes joy is expensive. And I could course-correct the memories of my mom slapping my hands away from crowns and swords in the merch store, because I am now a person with her own bank account and can buy as many damn flower crowns as I want.

The food, though, was somehow exactly as I remembered it as a kid: surprisingly good. Our waiter, whose countenance was more “bored stoner” than “devoted serf,” brought plastic, pewter-colored mugs filled with Pepsi or lemonade to our table, followed by bowls of tomato bisque for sipping and bread for dipping, and the main course of half of a roast chicken, half of a roasted potato, and a massive hunk of boneless pork rib. I tore into all of it with my hands, as intended. The chicken was juicy, the potato was adequately spiced, and I probably could’ve drunk another two bowls of that creamy tomato soup.

Plate with “Medieval Times” written on it containing a piece of bread, roasted chicken, corn, and half of a potato. A bowl sits alongside containing tomato soup.

As we ate, the show began in earnest. We were introduced to Queen Maria Isabella, the first queen in Medieval Times history who began her reign in 2018 after decades of male-only leadership in the castle. A falcon swooped across the arena, squires dutifully rounded up shards of splintered lances and shoveled up horse shit as the knights battled their way to victory. Things were going well for our guy, the red and yellow knight, until it was revealed that — twist! — he was actually the bad guy who was dead-set on ending Queen Isabella’s reign. There was even a little hint of era-appropriate misogyny when our knight asked the Queen’s royal advisor if he was really going to take orders from a woman.

Fueled by watered-down booze and roasted chicken, we cheered and screamed and booed and clapped our way through the show. For anyone who ever spent any of their childhood as a Horse Girl, the Andalusian horses — guests get to tour the stables before the show — are a major part of the draw. At one point during the show, as the stallions made their majestic romps around the arena, performing intricate dressage routines, I noticed that my friend a few seats down was crying because they were so beautiful. I laughed, but I understood. At one point, it’s possible that I got carried away and called the green knight a goofy-looking loser, which wasn’t particularly sporting of me. But it was proof that even despite all my cynicism and natural ability to find misery in things that should be joyful, Medieval Times had still retained its irresistible charms. For just a couple hours on a random Tuesday, I had experienced joy by acting like a complete dork in public.

To be sure, Medieval Times is not a perfect institution. Workers at two locations — one in New Jersey , and one in California — recently filed for union elections, citing issues like unsafe working conditions and inadequate protections for harassment by guests. The squire system, in which workers can train to eventually become knights, is still only open to men in an effort to keep the show “accurate,” which seems pretty ridiculous considering that Medieval Times happily serves Pepsi and sells photos taken with newfangled digital cameras, among countless other anachronisms.

As I was leaving the castle, I watched kids run up to the knights for autographs, their faces absolutely drenched in wonder. Even though I wasn’t quite that besotted — I do, after all, know that the knights are merely actors who will hop into their Honda Civics at the end of the night — there’s no denying that this trip to Medieval Times brought a little bit of magic back into my own cold, black heart.

  • Road_si74 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Don't Recommend! Medieval times definitely caters toward younger children, who get excited to see the horses and people dressed up as knights and whatnot. However, I and my 12-year-old son were appalled at how much the show horses were drooling during the performance, which is often a sign that horses are unhealthy/not well cared for. I recommend avoiding this place where animals are abused for entertainment!! Read more Written April 26, 2024
  • AmyM13 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Really enjoyable experience I have been to other Medieval Times, but this is one of the best. Our server was great. The show had alot of energy from all of the actors and horses and falcon. The food was great. Due to Lent, I was able to get a vegetarian option and the soup was really good, the potatos were little overcooked. Overall, my husband and I would come back. Read more Written March 20, 2024
  • krystalg645 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Must see! Was a memorable time! Our five and six year old loved it! The looks on their faces were priceless! Sharing that experience with grandma and cousins was worth every penny! The chicken was delicious! The green knight came in second! Please not my child cried for ten minutes after the show because she couldn’t meet the knight. Apparently that can only be done after the last show of the day so choose your time wisely! Also, the restroom line was a 20 minute wait for the girls room. The dessert was a frozen eclair and I am really surprised they don’t offer hot or cold tea. Other than that it’s a wonderful experience and a must do! It was everyone’s favorite part of the trip and we stayed at a nice hotel and spent two days at knotts berry farm. All the kids said the castle was the best part of the trip. My six year old did have her patience tested as she waited over an hour for the knights to be gone fighting to the death as she said, but once they did she was at the edge of her seat the entire time! The employees whoever handle the tickets & the ruling of the queen should organize it My family friends invited us to his daughters 22 years of bdays last night February 22, 2024 Saturday and her father bought a ticket including the ruling of the queen for her and we believe once you bought a ticket everything is done but we’re very disappointed because during ruling her name wasn’t called and we ask the employees and told her we bought a ticket for her ruling why her name wasn’t called. And we even stop the queen but they didn’t stop they just keep going and the employees in there whose handling it said her name wasn’t here just go there and refund your money. We don’t want to refund our money . We want her and us to experience this ruling and she said just go there to the counter. We even show the tickets that we bought it. But the queen just left and keep walking and we feel sorry for our friends daughter because she and all of us our excited and we’re the first one arrived to the place were the ruling will be held. We taught everything will be fine. This is her first time and she was upset including us. The employees who handle the ruling of the queen should be more accurate and organize . They called so many names but not in there in the ceremony but my friend’s daughter her name wasn’t there. You guys should appoint and train your employees more and please my only request is be organize and my second complained was don’t let the next show people to enter the place because it’s really crowded and chaos. It’s crazy. Next time don’t disappoint your other future customers because of one of your employees that is not organize will ruined your reputation. Read more Written February 25, 2024
  • B6899HQtomp 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles ITS A MONEY GRAB We purchase the Royal Queen tickets and were pretty disappointed in your staff. As a first time visitor, I would have expected someone on staff to guide us through getting our picture, etc. But that was not the case - we were shown where to go for our table and that was pretty much it. As we were seeing other families recieve their photos, we began to wonder what the heck happened. So after the show we had to find staff members to let us know where the photo was to be taken, etc. In the end, it was horrible because some family had to leave and were not in the photo that we all paid for. What a waste of money. How do we get a refund? Read more Written February 20, 2024

Two bars plus bar service at your seat. Staff all dressed in character, making it fun even before you get to sit down for the feast. Go early, plenty to look at pre tournament. The food was served piping hot, of great quality and quantity! Our server, Nathan, was great and took care of us throughout the evening. The show was spectacular, start to finish. Go with a good attitude and open mind to be transported back to medieval Spain. It’s just good, clean family fun! Read more Written January 7, 2024

The costumes, lighting and festive ambiance is effective. Recommend it for any one such as the countless young girls who love to ride and train horses to come watch. It is worth the charge. • samhH5341AZ 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Picket line for sexual harassment Had to cross a pretty disrespectful picket line. Apparently the actors are fighting "sexual harassment". So you have to explain to your kids and the whole walk in is pretty rough. The "scab" actors did better than I thought. I would have never gone if I knew this was happening. It's too expensive to have to start your evening by standing in that tension. We missed our knighting ceremony (a lot of people did) from all the confusion. Had to do it after. People handled it and tried to be ok, but, it was a real thorn in the evening. King of felt disrespected by Midevil Times. This was a big family event. • becw798 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Good entertainment We went to medieval times today. 2 adults and 2 kids 13 and 12. Food: I am a vegetarian and loved the food. My kids can't have dairy, and our server was amazing and knowledgeable about the food. Environment: fun and entertaining, albeit a bit loud for me, couldn't talk to my daughter next to me Horses: As mentioned above, I'm a vegetarian but can go to zoo's etc without too much distress. Today, seeing the horses was quite distressing. I didn't realise the protests when we walked in were regarding treatment of the horses, but they were salivating a lot and very unhappy. They looked in distress, and when the horses did tricks, it must have been hard to watch as the clapping, etc, was a lot quieter. Read more Written September 17, 2023
  • CarenWashington 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great for the right audience I took my nephew to Medieval Times and he thought it was the GREATEST THING ever. I was just grateful never to have to do it again. This is definitely a spectacle geared to a particular audience and I am not, apparently, that audience. If you are the right audience, it is excellent. This show was absolutely pure spectacle—lots of flashing lights, dramatic music, fog effects, lots of fighting, and horses—there were so many horses. The horsemanship was excellent—I’m not sure what it takes to get horses to do so many fancy tricks, but thinking about that made me uncomfortable. There was some kind of a plot, which I didn’t really follow—I found the dialogue mostly incomprehensible, thanks to a sub-par sound system and there being just too much of it. Some of the audience really got into cheering for their knight. The food was perfectly fine, although I wish they’d provided utensils. The meal was centered on half a small roast chicken, which was good, but really messy to eat with your fingers. Overall, I’d rate Medieval Times as really good, but only for those that enjoy this kind of mindless spectacle. Read more Written July 21, 2023

At Medieval Times, a war has been waged and the knights of the realm have returned triumphant! In honor of their victory, the King has called for a great feast and grand tournament to be held in his magnificent castle. As six bold knights prepare for the festivities, the King’s chancellor calls the 1,100 guests into the spectacular dining hall.

The bill of fare is a 4-course meal that is sure to satisfy even the hungriest of knights. This traditional medieval-style meal is served without silverware so prepare to dig in! His majesty’s royal feast includes oven-roasted chicken breast, and spare rib, served with tomato bisque soup, herb-roasted potatoes, garlic bread, and, of course, a pastry.

The king’s vegetarian meal includes hummus, warm pita bread, carrots and celery sticks, 3-bean stew with fire-roasted tomatoes and brown rice, and for dessert fresh fruit or Italian Ice. All meals are served with unlimited soft drinks and your choice of house beer, wine, or specialty drinks from the full bar available pre-show, during, and post-show.
