Cruise line gift cards: Where to buy them, how to spend them

If you're racking your brain to come up with the perfect gift for your cruise-loving family member or friend, consider buying them a gift card or certificate from their favorite cruise line.

Cruisers will appreciate a gift they can use toward purchasing their cruise fare or splurging on a beverage package, specialty restaurant or spa treatment. Don't rule out the first-timers on your list; you can help them fund their first foray into cruising or surprise them with something extra to make their upcoming trip special.

If you're a cruiser, you may also want to purchase a gift card for yourself, especially when you can find a deal. AARP sometimes offers digital gift cards for cruise lines like Princess, Holland America, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean at a savings of up to 10%.

Gift cards purchased with Target's RedCard receive a 5% discount. You can also look for Black Friday sales on Disney gift cards at Sam's Club and other promotions offered through the cruise lines or retailers.

Not every cruise line offers gift cards, and some have alternative ways to help pay for a portion of someone else's vacation. However, if you're in the market for cruise line gift cards, read on to find out which seven lines offer them, where to buy them and how to use them.

Holland America Line

Holland America offers gift cards in denominations between $5 and $2,000 that are available to buy on its website. You can either purchase a physical card to send enclosed with a personal message or choose a digital version that the recipient can open online with personalized audio and photos.

The line offers one or two sales a year that feature an added perk, such as a $100 bonus card with a $1,000 purchase.

You can use the cards to pay for cruise bookings, pre-cruise expenses or onboard charges covering specialty dining, beverages, shore excursions, spa treatments, gratuities and other purchases. They can also be used to buy Holland America's "Have It All" bundle, which includes a beverage package, shore excursion credit, Wi-Fi and specialty restaurant meals.

Holland America's gift cards are also available at online retailers, including Amazon, Target and Walmart, in preset amounts. Certain banks feature credit card programs where you can redeem points for the cruise line's gift cards. If you prefer to shop in person, you'll find gift cards in stores such as Target, Publix, Kroger and Giant Eagle.

Gift cards are only available in U.S. dollars. Gift cards are activated upon receipt, and they cannot be resold. In addition, buyers cannot purchase an aggregate amount exceeding $10,000 in one day.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises also offers gift cards on its website in denominations between $5 and $2,000. Buyers can personalize the line's eGift Card with photos and audio for the recipient. Princess Classic Gift Cards arrive by mail, with free shipping on cards over $100. Expedited shipping is also available.

You can use Princess gift cards to pay for your cruise, including fares with the Princess Plus and Princess Premier all-inclusive packages .

Recipients can also settle part or all of their onboard bill with gift cards at the end of the cruise at the passenger services desk. That means gift cards can essentially pay for meals in specialty restaurants, shore excursions, spa treatments and other onboard splurges.

You cannot use the gift card to pay for land excursions as part of a cruisetour, flights booked through Princess or gratuities.

You can find Princess gift cards in grocery stores like Kroger, Harris Teeter and Giant Eagle and online at retail sites such as Amazon, Target and Best Buy.

Gift cards are only available to residents in the U.S. and Canada. Classic Gift Cards cannot be mailed to Canada, so Canadian residents should choose the eGift Card option.

Buyers are limited to a $10,000 online aggregate purchase in one day and a maximum of five transactions a day. Anyone can use the gift card since there's no name on the card.

Carnival Cruises

Carnival Cruise Line 's online gift cards are customizable from $100 up to $1,000. You can purchase a physical card that's mailed and even have it wrapped and delivered in a tin for an additional $1.99 (for up to five cards). If you prefer, you can choose an e-gift card that's sent to the recipient online.

The gift card can be used toward a cruise booking, pre-purchased shore excursions or spa treatments. You can also apply it to beverage packages and gratuities. If you'd like to use the card as an onboard credit, you must go to the guest services desk or Sail & Sign kiosk to apply the gift card as payment for your onboard bill once you're on the ship.

Carnival's gift cards are available in over 9,000 retail outlets, including Best Buy, Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons, Lowe's, Safeway, Winn-Dixie and Publix. You can also purchase gift cards on board Carnival's ships. You can buy as many cards as you'd like, but there is a maximum online transaction of five gift cards at one time.

All gift cards are in U.S. dollars and not accepted on ships using a different onboard currency. You can transfer the gift card to another user since there are no names on the cards.

Disney Cruise Line

Gift cards for Disney Cruise Line are sold online at shopdisney.com in preset amounts, from $25 to $500. You can choose from over 60 Disney designs of physical gift cards and have them shipped, or you can send a themed eGift Card.

Gift cards are also sold at Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort and Disney retail locations throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada. If you're purchasing them in person, you can load them for any amount from $15 to $1,000. The cards are reloadable with as little as $5 and up to $1,000. They can be reloaded at any location that sells the gift cards. That option is not available online.

Use Disney gift cards to purchase a cruise, shore excursions, merchandise on the ship and other onboard expenses. You can also spend the cards at Disney-owned properties, like Disney's Vero Beach Resort; on trips or cruises with Adventures by Disney; for Disney on Broadway; and at retail stores and other Disney businesses.

You'll also find them in preset amounts at retailers like Target, Walmart and Best Buy.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line ended its gift card program in 2021, but you still can send gifts to cruisers in the form of an onboard credit or spa credit. Onboard credit is available in $25 increments up to $100. Mandara Spa certificates are offered in amounts of $25, $50 and $100.

To send the gift, you'll need to know some personal information, including the birth date of the recipient or the reservation number for the booking. You can order the gift of onboard credits on Norwegian's website.

CruiseFirst certificates are another gift option. These advance purchase vouchers can be used to pay for cruises of six days or longer and are valued at double the price. For example, you'll pay $150 for a certificate worth $300. You can transfer these vouchers to another person as a gift without a charge.

You can purchase up to 10 certificates per person at a time, and they can only be applied to new reservations on voyages scheduled at least 120 days out from the purchase date of the certificate. Only one certificate can be used per sailing — and there are a few other restrictions. These vouchers expire within three years of the purchase date.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is another line that uses a gift certificate program rather than gift cards. Certificates are available in the following U.S. dollar increments: $50, $100, $250, $500, $1,000, $1,500, $1,700 and $2,000. These certificates must be redeemed at least 10 days before the cruise.

Use them to pay the cruise fare, with some restrictions, or apply them toward onboard credit to cover specialty dining, beverage packages, spa treatments, gift shop purchases and other items. If you want to apply the gift certificates as payment for expenses on the ship, you'll need to redeem them online 10 days before the sailing date. They cannot be used for government taxes, fees, gratuities or casino play.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises has an online store where you can purchase onboard credit to celebrate someone's birthday, honeymoon, anniversary or other memorable occasion while on their cruise.

Gift certificates are available in $25 increments. These certificates can be purchased online if you know the recipient's reservation information, or you can call Celebrity's Store Customer Support team to place an order.

Note that gift cards cannot be used to pay shipboard charges, including gift shop purchases, casino debts, shore excursions or gratuities.

You can also give specialty dining certificates for $45 each. If the amount charged is less than that, the remaining sum will be applied to the passenger's onboard account.

Ok... it's been a few years since we've cruised. Let's find out how many travel agents still send a gift to their clients on board and what? Any input out there?

We've been on cruises each of the last 2 years. Each was booked thru local travel agents ( 2 different agencies ). Each arranged a gift for us, including a surprise birthday cake and several bottles of wine. From our perspective, its a 100% gift rate.

These little gestures build loyality from clients and encourage repeat business. Cruise #3 is booked thru the lovely lady who arranged the birthday surprise :) . We are fortunate to have found a person we like and are able to work with to make our travel plans. We may pay a little more than others, but we are happy with the service she provides and the comfort of a friendly voice on the phone is well worth the extra cost.

Our agent always gives something. She used to give us a bottle of some type of alcohol, and I finally told her we don't drink, so she now gives us a certificate for photos. Very nice!

For our Alaska cruise we got a basket with Alaska mugs, coasters, and other alaska things in it. We got an anniversary cake on one cruise paid for by the TA. And two times she ordered us wine and we never got it. We didn't know she had ordered it until we got back and found out to late.

We don't use traditional TAs for cruises (just book online), but I used one for a very complicated land-based trip we're taking in a very unspoiled (read: pure jungle) place where transportation and lodging are quite an adventure. I plan to send HER a gift when we get back for all her hard work!

Unfortunately, mine did nothing. I booked 4 cabins (3 balcony and an inside) so, she probably received a pretty nice commission. Too bad I am planning a family reunion cruise to Alaska in 2007 but I will not use her again.

We received a bottle of wine in each of the 2 cabins we booked thru her. When I went in to thank her she asked about a photo package that we also should have received. We didn't know anything about that.

This is a great thread. I booked 3 cabins (two were suites) on our spring HAL cruise and she sent two bottles of wine to each cabin. It was the first time I had used her (recommendation from this board). We just returned from our POAm cruise in an Owner's Suite and we didn't receive anything. To be honest, I was alittle disappointed. We cruise or vacation at least twice a year and I'm contemplating moving to someone who appreciates our business.

As I found out sometimes they send things and you never would know because you don't receive them. My TA happens to be the sister of a friend and my friend said " my sister wanted to know if you enjoyed the wine she sent" and that's how I found out we never got it. So you may have been sent something and just never got it.

As a TA, I can guarantee you I do send something, but I also feel the service you get from your TA is more important then the bottle of wine, OBC or whatever. As for not always knowing if the gift if received, usually we do get a thank you from our clients, but I had some on the Sun Thanksgiving week and have no idea if they got their gifts as I have not heard a word. Warning, I don't blame you for thinking it is a nice jesture for your TA to think of you, but be sure and thank him/her when you return so they know if the gift got to where it was supposed to go. I've never received anything from my TA while on board, and personally, that's fine by me. I appreciate the fact that he answers all my questions, gives me what appears to be great prices, and is willing to do whatever it takes to give me the best service he can.

That said, he did send us a box of chocolates recently with our documents.

For a hint? Then maybe we should all start talking about how our TA's gave us a free cruise! lol

I have gotten everything from a bottle of wine to a cheese tray to 2 really useful denim shopping bags...I don't expect anything ever and I have used three different TAs over the years.

Being a realtor, I am a commissioned person myself - as are travel agents. I would never dream of showing up to the closing table without a very nice closing gift for my clients. I feel travel agents should do the same. It doesn't have to be expensive, it's the thought that counts. For my agent to send something one cruise, but not the next is odd. I like to feel valued for my continued business and I believe that answering questions and being timely isn't the extent of a good travel agent.

I once got a big collapsable tote bag from my TA as a cruise gift....nice. I used it for ages.

We have always received one bottle of wine for our cruises (mini-suites) but our last cruise we had a penthouse and received one bottle of wine and one bottle of champagne.

Ours gave us a $50 on board credit...real nice..In the past it has been bottles of champagne...

My, how very generous. We have purchased 15 (yes-fifteen) homes in our married life, and only once did we receive a closing gift - a box of wonderful California oranges.

Never have gotten a thing from travel agents - either for air, land, or sea.

We have received "Thank You" cards from several of them.

So, this whole idea is new to me. I like it!!:p

When I bought my home just over a year ago, my agent gave me a $100 gift card, and the mortgage agent gave me a bottle of wine. On the previous home my agent sent some flowers in the fall. Before that, nothing.

Just got my docs from my TA today and he gave me a nice heavy cloth tote bag with a zipper from the agency, along with a bottle of wine. Not expensive, but at least a friendly gesture!

Why should they send you anything? Does the grocery store send you a gift when you shop there. Does the gas station give you free stuff for using them. You should use them for their service and attention. Not for free stuff

You can find lots of incentives in a variety of businesses. For example free gift wrapping at certain stores. Granted you should be going there only to buy a product, but if they give you something extra it makes some customers feel more endeared to that particular business.

So when you ask why should a TA send a client a gift. The answer would be money. Yes your making a bit of an investment, but in the end most clients see the gift as personal attention from the TA, makes them feel good and increases the likelyhood that client will purchase services from that TA again.

I see the logic in your statement. In a perfect world we could all assign values to the services. Then we could compare the value points assigned against the price paid to determine a metric for evaluating future purchases to optimize value. However sad as it is to say, most people just get a good feeling or a bad feeling about service and thats it. So even if they have trying experiences with an agent a bottle of wine with a note may be all it takes to secure that clients repeat business again.

A voice of reason--finally. A $50 on-board credit just tells me I paid at least $50 too much for my cruise. Rather than a chintzy gift from a realtor, I'd rather see a realistic commission--not the 6% that's simply outrageous given the price of homes these days.

Amen........I wish I made as much commission as a Realtor then I could give a real NICE "gift";)

Believe me, it dosen`t matter if you give some clients a gift (I do, not always) if they can get it cheaper next time.........they will be outta there in a shot.

Notice I said "some". My long term good clients I treat very well.

General Gift Voucher Information

Q: what is the norwegian cruise line gift voucher.

A: The Norwegian Cruise Line Gift Voucher programme is a prepaid card loaded with a specific amount of funds, redeemable only at Norwegian Cruise Line, both towards your cruise fare and for onboard spend. Please know that we will be suspending our gift voucher programme effective end of day on December 31, 2021. Why? Because we do not feel that our consumer experience is at the level our guests deserve. So we are looking to improve that. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Please see our FAQ section for any questions you may have. The good news is that if you’re looking to gift friends or family with money to spend on board their upcoming cruise, we encourage you to purchase an onboard credit which can be used for our restaurants, spa services, shore excursions – even towards their onboard folio. Q: How many Gift Cards can be purchased at one time?

A: Up to 5 Gift Cards can be purchased in one transaction.

Q: Is there a minimum or maximum dollar amount that a Gift Card can be purchased for?

A: The minimum amount for a Gift Card purchase is $25 and the maximum is $1,000.

Q: Are there set amounts that can be purchased?

A: Yes, we offer Gift Cards in the following denominations: $25, $50, $100, $250, $500. Customers can also choose to purchase a customized Gift Card amount, in any whole dollar value starting from $25 to $1,000.

Q: Is there a fee to purchase a Gift Card?

A: No. Unless the expedited shipping option is selected, where a fee of $15.95 will be applied.

Q: What currency can Gift Cards be purchased in?

A: Gift Cards can only be purchased in US Dollars.

Q: Do Gift Vouchers expire?

A: Gift Vouchers will expire once the "valid thru" date listed on the front of the Gift Voucher has passed, or 7 years from date of purchase. The funds on the Gift Voucher do not expire and will still be available for use if the cardholder contacts our Customer Service line to receive a replacement Gift Voucher less dormancy fees, However, unused funds can be depleted through the application of dormancy fees which begin to be assessed beginning on the 13th month of inactivity on the card. There will not be a charge for a replacement card if a replacement card is ordered after the Gift Voucher expires in order to access unused funds. Customers may contact us at 1-888-976-6904 to request a new Gift Voucher after it expires. Note: For lost cards, in addition to dormancy fees, replacement fees will apply.

Q: Can additional funds be added to a Gift Voucher?

A: No. Gift Vouchers are not reloadable. Funds cannot be added to a Gift Voucher after it has been purchased or redeemed. When all the value is used, the card should be destroyed. If additional funds are desired, another Gift Voucher can be purchased.

Q: What happens if the credit card used for a Gift Card purchase is declined?

A: If the credit card used for a Gift Card purchase is declined, the communication will advise the consumer that the credit card was declined and instruct the consumer to use a new credit card to purchase a Gift Card. The current transaction will be cancelled and customers will need to place a brand new gift card order.

Q: Do Gift Vouchers need to be activated?

A: No. Gift Vouchers can be used right away.

Q: Will the purchaser receive a communication about Gift Card purchase?

A: Norwegian will send a communication to the Gift Card purchaser via email when the credit card is processed for payment, this may take 2-3 business days. Gift Card purchases should not be re-submitted during this timeframe. This will result in a duplicate order and duplicate orders cannot be cancelled or refunded. Another email will also be sent when the Gift Card order is ready to ship.

Q: Will recipient receive a notice prior to Gift Card arriving?

A: No. We are not able to send a note to Gift Card recipients.

A: No, once a Gift Card order has been submitted, all information is final.

A: Once a Gift Card order is placed, a confirmation email will be sent when the order has been processed. This may take 2-3 business days depending on when the order was placed. Gift Card purchases should not be re-submitted within this timeframe as this will result in a duplicate order. Duplicate orders cannot be cancelled or refunded.

Q: I placed my Gift Card order on a weekend, when will it be processed?

A: Gift Card orders placed over the weekend will be processed the following business day. Email confirmations will be sent once orders have been processed, please allow 2-3 business days to receive confirmation.

A: No, once a Gift Card order has been submitted, all information, including shipping address, is final and cannot be modified.

A: Gift Vouchers can only be used at Norwegian Cruise Line participating locations, including but not limited to, www.ncl.com , phone reservations, onboard ships for guest accounts, and by travel professionals to apply to customer accounts. The Card is not valid on any other cruise line, including any affiliate or subsidiary of Norwegian Cruise Line.

Q: How are Gift Vouchers redeemed?

A: Gift Vouchers can be used in the same manner as a credit card for purchases made online, in-person, or over the phone to Norwegian or a travel professional, or in-person for onboard expenses. A customer can use up to 3 Gift Vouchers in one transaction. For online purchases, "Norwegian Cruise Line Gift Voucher" should be selected as the payment type, and the Gift Voucher is entered the same as a credit card. For in-person or over the phone purchases, the Gift Voucher is presented to the agent when payment is collected and cardholder must inform agent of the amount of funds available on the card. For onboard purchases, the Gift Voucher can be presented to Guest Services Desk onboard the ship and will be applied toward onboard folio.

Q: What if a purchase is greater than the value on the Gift Voucher?

A: If the Gift Voucher is used for a purchase which is greater than the balance of the funds available on the card, the cardholder must tell the merchant to charge only the exact amount of funds available on the Gift Voucher to the Gift Voucher, and then must arrange to pay the difference using another payment method.

Q: What if a purchase amount is less than the value on the Gift Voucher?

A: If the Gift Voucher is used for a purchase which is less than the balance of funds available on the card, the amount of purchase can be charged, and then the Gift Voucher can be returned to the cardholder to use the remaining balance for future purchases.

Q: Can a Gift Voucher be used as payment at retail locations onboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship?

A: No. Gift Vouchers can only be used as payment toward the onboard ship account. Guests can visit the Guest Services Desk onboard to have a Gift Voucher applied to an onboard account. Guests will use their key card in all the ships' retail locations to make charges to their onboard accounts.

Q: Can a Gift Voucher be used to check in at the port?

A: No. Norwegian Cruise Line cannot accept Gift Vouchers as a form of payment at the ship terminal. Guests can, however, use Gift Vouchers as a form of payment to be applied toward their onboard ship account. Returns & Refunds

Q: is the purchase of a gift voucher refundable.

A: No. The purchase of a Gift Voucher is non-refundable. Gift Vouchers cannot be cancelled or returned.

Q: Can a Gift Voucher be returned for cash?

A: No. Gift Vouchers are non-refundable and cannot be returned for cash or credit. The Gift Voucher is not a Debit Card and cannot be used to obtain cash at ATMs or obtain cash back in any purchase transaction.

Q: What happens if a Gift Voucher is used toward a cruise purchase and then the cruise is cancelled?

A: A refund will be processed and payments returned in accordance with our Refund Policy, less Gift Voucher amount and any applicable cancellations fees that apply. For the amount that was paid for using a Norwegian Cruise Line Gift Voucher, a new card will be issued to in the same amount. For all other funds paid, refunds will be processed in accordance with our Refund Policy.

Lost or Stolen Cards

Q: what should a customer do if a gift voucher is lost or stolen.

A: Immediately report the card lost or stolen by calling the Norwegian Cruise Line Gift Voucher customer service centre at 1-888-976-6904. A replacement card can be requested and a replacement fee of $6.95 will apply for replacement cards to be issued. We suggest that guests write down the Gift Voucher tracking number from the back of the card on a separate piece of paper to reference in the event the Gift Voucher is lost or stolen.

Gift Voucher Fees

A: Yes, the following fees apply: 1) Dormancy Fee of $3.00 will apply after 12 months of inactivity and every month thereafter. 2) Replacement Fee of $6.95 for Lost or Stolen cards to be reissued. 3) Expedited Shipping Fee of $15.95 for expedited shipping service.

Q: Are there dormancy fees on the Gift Voucher?

A: Yes, dormancy fees apply. Subject to applicable law, beginning the 13th consecutive month after there has been no activity on the Gift Voucher, a fee of $3.00 will be assessed to the card. This fee will be assessed to the Gift Voucher each month as long as there are funds remaining on the card and no further activity has occurred. If further activity occurs, no further dormancy fees will be assessed again until the 13th consecutive month after activity. This fee can be avoided by making regular purchases with the Gift Voucher.
