25 sailing movies for when you’re knot shore what to watch

We share some of our favourite best sailing movies, from Hollywood blockbusters and indie films to illuminating documentaries

I still hang on to the rather fanciful notion of sailing in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race . Until I pluck up the courage (and the funds), I’ve been busying myself with more realistic nautical escapades.

From  tall ship sailing off the west coast of Scotland  to  sailing the Whitsunday Islands  in Australia , more and more of our travels have taken place on the water.

However, until I make the leap from weekend warrior to blue water sailor, I’ll have to make do with films, books and daydreams.

With that in mind, I’ve put together a list of the best sailing movies I’ve seen. What follows is a broad mix of modern and classic, indie and feature, drama and documentary film. Whatever their style, these flicks are thoroughly wet and wonderful.

And, I’m sorry about the pun, but you know, ship happens.

best sailing movies

Listed in no particular order, these nautical movies include terrifying ordeals of tragedy, inconceivable stories of survival, turbulent tales of adventure and wild journeys of discovery – perfect for a night in on a dry and comfy sofa.

1. Kon-Tiki (1950) Let’s start with one of the best sailing movies ever made. In 1947, Heyerdahl and five others sailed from Peru on a balsa wood raft. This is the classic Academy Award winning documentary of their astonishing journey across 4,300 miles of the Pacific Ocean.

Red Dot on the Ocean (2014) Once labelled a ‘youth-at-risk’, 30-year old Matt Rutherford risked it all in an attempt to become the first person to sail solo non-stop around North and South America. Red Dot on the Ocean is the story of Matt’s death-defying voyage and the childhood odyssey that shaped him.

10. Kon-Tiki (2012) A well-crafted retelling of the epic original and one of the best sailing movies ever made. This dramatised version is a throwback to old-school adventure filmmaking that’s exciting and entertaining in spite of its by-the-book plotting.

“But you can’t navigate a raft,” he added. “It goes sideways and backwards and round as the wind takes it.” – Thor Heyerdahl, Kon-Tiki

11. Abandoned (2015) Four men set sail on the trimaran yacht Rose Noelle . It capsizes in a storm, trapping the crew in a space the size of a double bed. 12. Adrift (2019) There are far better films on this list, but Adrift is just about worth a watch. Based on true events, a young couple embark on an adventure of a lifetime that brings them face to face with one of the worst hurricanes in recorded history.

13. The Perfect Storm (2000) A skipper insists that his crew go out on a final fishing trip before winter sets in. Unknown to them, a brutal storm is on its way. While the special effects are excellent for the time, the film falls a little  short on characterisation.

14. Sea Gypsies: The Far Side of the World (2016) The vessel is Infinity, a 120ft hand-built sailboat, crewed by a band of miscreants. The journey, an 8,000-mile Pacific crossing from New Zealand to Patagonia with a stop in Antarctica .

21. The Mercy (2017) Starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz, this is certainly no heroic tale. Instead, it’s the dramatisation of the bizarre story of amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst and his attempt to pull off one of the greatest hoaxes of our time: pretending to be the first to sail singlehandedly around the world!

22. Deep Water (2006) Following on from the above, Deep Water is a British documentary about the remarkable story of the first Golden Globe round the world yacht race , focusing on the psychological toll it took on its competitors – particularly one Donald Crowhurst.

24. Open Water 2: Adrift (2006) A silly premise, but entertaining nonetheless. Six friends jump off a yacht without lowering the ladder first. With no way to climb aboard, it’s only a matter of time before bickering turns to terror.

Adrift is one of the best sailing movies

25. Master and Commander – The Far Side of the World (2003) During the Napoleonic Wars, a brash British captain (Russell Crowe) pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel.

Kon-Tiki

"Kon-Tiki" was the name of a wooden raft used by six Scandinavian scientists, led by Thor Heyerdahl, to make a 101-day journey from South America to the Polynesian Islands. The purpose of the expedition was to prove Heyerdal's theory that the Polynesian Islands were populated from the east- specifically Peru- rather than from the west (Asia) as had been the theory for hundreds of years. Heyerdahl made a study of the winds and tides in the Pacific, and by simulating conditions as closely as possible to those he theorized the Peruvians encountered, set out on the voyage.

76 Days

Steven Callahan gives a gripping first-hand account of his NYT bestselling novel "Adrift: 76 Days Lost At Sea." On the eve of February 4, 1982, in the middle of the night there was a loud boom as a whale collided with Steven's boat. Within minutes, his small craft was flooded with a rush of water. He grabbed what he could, heaved his life raft into the ocean, and snatched his emergency kit. Without food or water, for an incredible 76 days the inflatable raft was his home as he drifted across the entire Atlantic Ocean. Forced to come to terms with his own shortcomings and limitations, Steven finds a strength he never knew he had. This official documentary, executive produced by Callahan, brings the story to life with found 8MM footage, original stills of the time of the voyage, and first-person recreation. Still possessing many of the original artifacts, he takes us step-by-step through his harrowing and life-altering adventure.

The Jewel will sail more than five thousand kilometres across the Indian Ocean and do battle with the Monsoon – but for sailors it can spell danger and even death. It took a year to build: the Jewel of Muscat – a reconstruction of a 1200 year old Arab ship, based on an ancient shipwreck. Built from more than 18 tonnes of wood, the ship is held together entirely by 100 km of rope in over 127,000 hand-sewn stitches. Now the Jewel will sail more than five thousand kilometres across the Indian Ocean and do battle with the Monsoon – the mighty rain soaked wind that turns the arid land it touches green. But for sailors it can spell danger and even death.

The 8 Best Ocean Movies Set Out in the Sea, Ranked

ocean voyage movies

If you buy something using our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

There's an added edge whenever rough seas and oceans become involved in a narrative. Why? Because open waters are unpredictable, harsh, and full of dangers lurking beneath the surface.

Which is why oceans and seas have been where some of the greatest battles have been fought. From pioneers in search of a home to ships lost to Davy Jones' locker, the ocean proves itself perfect for adventure.

Unfortunately, there aren't that many great movies set on the high seas—at least, not as many as you'd think. A lot of scripts and directors fail to truly capture the sense of intensity of the ocean's raw power.

Here are my picks for the best ocean movies set out in the open seas that truly did justice to the expanse of azure waves.

8. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

ocean voyage movies

Directed by Gore Verbinski

Starring Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom

Action, Adventure, Fantasy (2h 23m)

8.1 on IMDb — 80% on RT

It's hard to remember that first feeling we all got when the first Pirates of the Caribbean film landed in cinemas in 2001. Johnny Depp and the rest of the cast delivered performances that gripped us throughout, with effects work that felt fresh and bold in its approach.

Based on the ride at Disneyland, it's fair to surmise that expectations for the film weren't exactly high when production was first announced. It sounded like Disney had run out of original ideas and wanted to mine their theme parks for box office success.

However, Curse of the Black Pearl scored 5 Academy Award nominations and became a smash hit at the box office, all the while featuring ocean sequences that raised the bar for future films to follow.

7. The Abyss (1989)

ocean voyage movies

Directed by James Cameron

Starring Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Michaell Biehn

Adventure, Drama, Mystery (2h 20m)

7.5 on IMDb — 88% on RT

With James Cameron's intricate eye and fierce individualism driving his vision forward, The Abyss became a shining example of his work. It showcased the future of special effects as he worked with ILM on CGI advancements that led to the computer effects revolution of the 90s.

None of that would have mattered if The Abyss didn't succeed. Fortunately, it did! And the story of the sunken submarine became a sci-fi classic that launched Cameron's career to new heights.

The potency of underwater sequences and the hidden secrets in the ocean depths made the picture a thriller that never relents until the final moments. In doing so, it became more than just an exploration of the sea—it was an exploration of the human condition.

6. All Is Lost (2013)

ocean voyage movies

Directed by J. C. Chandor

Starring Robert Redford

Action, Adventure, Drama (1h 46m)

6.9 on IMDb — 94% on RT

J.C. Chandor's minimal dialogue film about a single man lost at sea—starring Robert Redford as that one man—has become an example of how to make the ocean a true enemy of survival.

We don't know too much about how Redford's character became trapped in the ocean, and he doesn't interact with anybody else throughout the picture. Still, the sheer intensity of Redford's survival attempt makes all other information secondary. He just needs to get back to civilization.

All Is Lost exceeds expectations as far as what ocean disaster films need to do well. It dedicates itself to the basics of surviving and doesn't burden itself with a wider plot, because Chandor understood that the fight to live was the only thing needed to make the movie captivating.

5. Life of Pi (2012)

ocean voyage movies

Directed by Ang Lee

Starring Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Adil Hussain

Adventure, Drama, Fantasy (2h 7m)

7.9 on IMDb — 86% on RT

The film adaptation of Yann Martel's book Life of Pi delivers a tale of ocean survival, from the perspective of one survivor who was shipwrecked and eventually made it home. The movie is framed as the modern-day survivor recounting his past story to a novelist.

And that's where the strength of the narrative lies. We know that Pi survives from the first scenes of the film, but the obstacles he encounters and the way he survives is what really matter—his journey across the Pacific Ocean in a lifeboat with a fully-grown Bengal tiger.

Pi's tale of survival is wrapped in theological layers that permeate the film yet never overwhelm it, and that's down to the deft direction of Ang Lee, who never fails to put the human element first in his films.

4. Captain Phillips (2013)

ocean voyage movies

Directed by Paul Greengrass

Starring Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi, Catherine Keener

Action, Biography, Crime (2h 14m)

7.8 on IMDb — 93% on RT

Based on the true story of Richard Phillips' harrowing kidnap by Somali pirates, Tom Hanks stars in Captain Phillips , which depicts on film the ordeal that Phillips went through during his fateful voyage.

Paul Greengrass does one thing very well in Captain Phillips : make the sea a vast desert that's full of obstacles for all sides of the event. The US warships that tail Phillips are unable to engage, and the pirates that have captured him are unable to escape them.

The tension that builds throughout the film reaches a fever pitch by its climax, with everything coming to a head and the survival of Phillips put into question, despite the fact we know he survives. That's down to Tom Hanks and Paul Greengrass' filmmaking prowess.

ocean voyage movies

3. Jaws (1975)

ocean voyage movies

Directed by Steven Spielberg

Starring Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss

Adventure, Mystery, Thriller (2h 4m)

8.1 on IMDb — 97% on RT

The original summer blockbuster. The film that made entire generations terrified of going into the sea at all. Jaws remains one of cinema's finest seafaring productions.

The story follows a trio of unlikely heroes who go out to find and kill a gigantic Great White Shark that's been feeding on the beaches of a tourist island. The potent threat of open waters takes hold as the trio find themselves fighting a shark that simply refuses to die.

The fun and horror of  Jaws come from the sightings of the shark, as its minimal screentime make it an unseen danger that can strike without warning. It's a technique copied by filmmakers throughout cinema since, and it's rarely been done as well as it was by Spielberg.

ocean voyage movies

2. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

ocean voyage movies

Directed by Peter Weir

Starring Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, Billy Boyd

Action, Adventure, Drama (2h 18m)

7.5 on IMDb — 85% on RT

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World centers on Captain Jack Aubrey's chase across the South Pacific, and that chase is at once delightfully engaging and intensely thrilling. Director Peter Weir faithfully honored the thematic tone of the book it was based on.

Armed with a cast at the peak of their powers—with Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany in leading roles— Master and Commander takes the audience on a journey to find a unique French ship that has destroyed several other British ships as they've crossed the ocean.

The end result is a film that's aged well as time has passed, showcasing a unique kind of tone that truly highlights the cast's performances, all while establishing Peter Weir's film as one of the most original ocean movies in the history of cinema.

1. Battleship Potemkin (1925)

ocean voyage movies

Directed by Sergei Eisenstein

Starring Aleksandr Antonov, Vladimir Barskiy, Grigoriy Aleksandrov

Drama, History, Thriller (1h 6m)

7.9 on IMDb — 100% on RT

Battleship Potemkin was a Soviet propaganda film made to commemorate the actual events of the Potemkin, in which the crew revolted against their commanders due to the horrific conditions aboard the naval vessel.

The film remains unlike any other movie to this day, even 97 years since its original release. Sergei Eisenstein's film influenced the foundations of cinema and inspired future filmmakers with his unrelenting piece that showed the brutality of Tsar-era ships.

As the crew become angered to the point of mutiny, Battleship Potemkin makes the message of communism clear, yet goes beyond the purpose for which it was made. It holds together a grim reality for those souls that mutinied aboard the Potemkin in 1905.

Screen Rant

10 great out-to-sea movies besides titanic & where to watch them.

Titanic is the movie most people think about when it comes to the sea but there are some other greats you can stream today!

Life at sea is not always paradise. Movies remind viewers of that easily, primarily with the horror films  that take place on the water (or under it). But there are certainly plenty of big box office  hits and smaller out-at-sea movies that remained fan favorites long after they were released.

RELATED: The Wellerman: 10 Movies To Watch If You Love Sea Shanties

Moviegoers automatically think about the one-and-only couple (that could have made it through if only he had a chance to fit on the floating piece in the Atlantic), Jack and Rose from Titanic . However, there are countless other films that grip viewers tight and keep them engaged until the end, whether they involve romance, action, horror, or all of the above.

Adrift (Netflix)

Shailene Woodley plays the important role of Tami Oldham, based on the true story of her and her fiancee who set sail from Tahiti to San Diego.

Woodley and Sam Clafin nailed their respective roles in Adrift as the two sailors that fall in love. Adventure and fearlessness come into play throughout the beginning of this film, only to then twist into a heartbreaking reality for the duo when they get stranded at sea. Netflix currently has this film available to stream.

Captain Phillips (FuboTV)

That iconic line from brilliant actor (aside from the great Tom Hanks), Barkhad Abdi, "Look at me, I am the captain now," showcases how  Captain Phillips displays the fright that happens when an entire ship is taken over by pirates.

RELATED: The Meg & 9 Other Scariest Movies About The Deep Sea, Ranked

Like any other role, Hanks played the captain genuinely, showing his demeanor under stress and also the effects of the fearful event he goes through. This movie is currently offered on FuboTV.

The Triangle (Youtube)

There are a myriad of versions of what happens in the middle of The Bermuda Triangle, but all the films mostly involve the haunting and inexplicable circumstances that people are put through in this location. This 2001 television movie stars the late Luke Perry , follows that trope.

A couple of friends go to Bermuda and go out to the triangle for some fun. They originally have absolutely no idea that (spoilers ahead) the triangle is basically a wormhole and they've been missing for quite some time when they went out deeper through the water. The best part is that anyone can search for this film on Youtube (no subscription required) and watch it for free at this time.

The Shallows (FX)

Aside from being another shark-infested flick, Blake Lively portrays a convincing one-woman show trying to evade a killer shark attack.

Being that most of the film takes place on one rock in the middle of the water, the entire plot is unique because this one location is already extremely suspenseful. Unfortunately for the main character, life at sea is not the best for her for a while. The Shallows is currently streaming with a subscription to FX.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged (Amazon Prime)

The first 47 Meters Down film is available to purchase on multiple platforms, but its sequel is available to stream on Amazon Prime as part of a subscription

RELATED: 10 Best Sea Monster Movies

Aside from its seriously tough-as-nails ending, the entire film has some pretty cool shots under the sea. The teenage girls that wind up in this deeply gnarly trouble have state-of-the-art scuba gear as they try to find a way out of the underwater maze. The threat of the sharks isn't the only frightening aspect of their traumatic adventure.

All Pirates of the Caribbean Films (Disney Plus & Starz)

Some consider the Pirates of the Caribbean series to be the best swashbuckler movies of all time . Each film is detailed with the most intricate details in the landscape, costumes, and characters. The romance and action tie up each film with unique endings.

The presence out at sea is full for the audience to swallow, as they watch the waves crash and the pirates fight when they approach Jack Sparrow's beloved horizon. The comical moments throughout each film lighten up this treacherous sea life they all are living. Four of the five films can be accessed on Disney Plus, while On Stranger Tides is on Starz!

Cast Away (HBO)

Tom Hanks is at it again here with another oceanic, adventurous role, except this one is one of his earlier films that helped his stardom. The movie is considered a work of art with its combination of love, intelligence, and survival overall to get through the struggle of living on an island for years.

RELATED: Pirates Of The Caribbean: 10 Characters Most Likely To Survive A Zombie Apocalypse

The concept of loneliness is frightening for people to live through. However, that is precisely what keeps audiences fishing for more as they watch the main character live a new life out in the middle of the entire ocean. Cast Away is now streaming on HBO!

Finding Dory (Disney Plus)

Everyone knows about Finding Nemo and deem it as one of Pixar's best creations . But what about Dory's sequel? This happy movie isn't always given as much attention now, possibly because some fans are still very attached to Nemo.

Finding Dory is a fun adventure under the sea. It's hard for Pixar veteran and new generation viewers to not enjoy this swim with Dory. Since it's a Disney film, anyone can stream it on Disney Plus, of course.

Aquaman (HBO Max)

Jason Momoa does not disappoint in his role as the badass underwater superhero. It's impressive to watch as he easily can switch positions in life on land and under the sea.

Arthur isn't the typical hero because his aggression definitely makes his position look questionable at times, but it's obvious that his intentions are good as his quest is personal because his mother is involved. The movie's ending is a refreshing sight because of its comical and lighthearted aura. Aquaman is currently streaming on HBO Max.

Nim's Island (Available To Rent Amazon Prime)

Many may have forgotten one of Abigail Breslin's coolest roles of her career. Nim's Island  follows a young girl who lives on an island with her intelligent father. When he leaves for a scientific mission, Nim is left alone for a bit which causes concern.

The little girl's inspiration with "Alex Rover" leads to an interesting encounter with Jodie Foster's anxious character, an author, but Nim believes she is an actual adventurer. The family-friendly film depicts a child's daily life out at sea on an island—an inspirational sight for younger viewers to see. This movie can be rented on Amazon Prime.

Cinematic voyages: 20 unforgettable cruise ship movies.

Are you looking for inspiration to plan your first cruise ? Take a cinematic voyage with my pick of movies set on a cruise ship.

Not all of these cruise ship movies are masterpieces (although some are). A few are utter stinkers. However, each of them showcases aspects of life on the high seas.

Although I have indicated the availability of these films on Netflix and Amazon Prime there may be regional variations. Information here relates to the UK market in March 2024.

Classic Movies About Cruise Ships

Let’s start with the best movies about cruise ships, from films from Hollywood’s Golden Age to a science fiction classic.

Now, Voyager (1942)

Now, Voyager is not only one of the best movies set on a cruise ship but it is also one of my favourite films of all time. I blub like a baby each time I watch it.

Cowed by her domineering mother, middle-aged neurotic Boston heiress Charlotte Vale (a stupendous Bette Davis) takes a cruise after a restorative stay in a sanatorium. Whilst on board, she falls in love with the married Jerry (Paul Henreid).

The movie is famous for an iconic scene where Paul Henreid’s character lights two cigarettes and gives one to Bette Davis.

A masterpiece of a movie.

  • Running time: 1 hour 57 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 91%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 90%
  • Available for streaming on Amazon Prime here .

An Affair to Remember (1957)

This melodrama directed by Leo McCarey and starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr is considered to be one of the most romantic films of all time.

Playboy Nickie (Grant) and Terry (Kerr) fall in love on a transatlantic cruise to New York. Despite being engaged to other people, they agree to meet in six months at the top of the Empire State Building. But will all go to plan?

An Affair to Remember was introduced to a new generation of cinema-goers when it was featured in the 1993 movie Sleepless in Seattle .

  • Running time: 1 hour 55 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 65%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 87%
  • Available for streaming on Amazon Prime here

Death on the Nile (1978)

Agatha Christie’s 1937 murder mystery has been adapted for the silver screen three times but the original film version is the best of the bunch (don’t go near Kenneth Branagh’s woeful 2022 remake).

Directed by John Guillermin, Death on the Nile was Peter Ustinov’s first appearance as Hercule Poirot and perhaps his best. Soon after Poirot boards a ship for a luxurious cruise down the Nile, a newlywed heiress is discovered murdered on board. Who is her murderer?

  • Running time: 2 hours 20 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score : 78%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 79%

The Fifth Element (1997)

Welcome to a cruise ship of the future.

For my money, Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element is up there with the best science fiction movies of all time. Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis giving one of his finest performances) is a 23rd-century cab driver who is unwittingly pulled into a search for a mysterious fifth element that will prevent an apocalyptic event.

Much of the action in the final third of the movie takes place on Fhloston Paradise, a space cruise ship patronised by the rich and powerful. This superliner features twelve swimming pools with two VIP pools, dozens of high-end restaurants and a concert hall.

A glimpse of the future of cruising? Minus the giant fireball of course.

Disaster Movies Set on a Cruise Ship

The poseidon adventure (1972).

The 1970s was the decade for disaster movies featuring all-star ensemble casts and The Poseidon Adventure gets my vote as the best disaster film set on a cruise ship.

This multi-nominated movie – it went on to win two Oscars – centres on the ageing SS Poseidon on her final voyage from New York to Athens. After it is upended by a tsunami on New Year’s Day, it’s a race against time to bring the survivors to safety.

Spoiler alert; not many passengers make it.

Titanic (1997)

The Oscar-winning, multi-nominated Titanic is one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Directed by James Cameron and starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, this epic movie about one of the most famous cruise ships in history is also one of the most expensive movies ever made.

The sinking of the Titanic is viewed through the lens of a fictional relationship across the social divide between Rose (Winslet), and Jack (DiCaprio).

A Night to Remember (1958)

Despite Titanic ’s many gongs, I far prefer this treatment of the sinking of the ill-fated cruise ship.

Filmed in a semi-documentary style, A Night to Remember sticks closely to the facts of the ship’s sinking, unimpeded by fictional sub-plots. This riveting film portrays the events of the fateful night of 15 th April 1912 from the perspective of the luxury liner’s second officer, Charles Lightoller (Kenneth More).

Out to Se a (1997)

Out to Sea is not Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon’s finest cinematic outing by any stretch of the imagination but it is a harmless bit of escapist fun.

Hunting for lonely women with hefty bank balances, Charlie (Matthau) coaxes his widower brother-in-law Herb (Lemmon) into working with him as a dance host on an all-expenses-paid luxury cruise. Under the watchful eye of the cruise director (played by Brent Spiner from Star Trek ), Charlie pursues wealthy socialite Liz (Dyan Cannon) and Herb unexpectedly falls for Vivian (Gloria DeHaven).

The Parent Trap (1998)

This romantic comedy directed and co-written by Nancy Meyers stars Lindsay Lohan playing the role of identical twins who discover their relationship when they are sent to the same summer camp. The twins then set to work trying to reunite their parents.

While much of The Parent Trap takes place on land, there are some scenes set aboard Cunard’s now-retired Queen Elizabeth 2 (they were actually filmed on  Queen Mary , which is docked in Long Beach, California).

Carry on Cruising (1962)

Carry on films are a guilty pleasure for me. Cinematic masterpieces they are not but they are silly fun from a more innocent time.

Carry on Cruising is very much in this mould.

Sid James plays Wellington Crowther, the captain of SS Happy Wanderer, who is forced to replace five absent crew members at short notice. Not only are these the most incompetent shipmates to set foot on deck, but the passengers are no picnic.

Dramatic Movies Set on a Cruise Ship

Ship of fools (1965).

And the Award for the Worst Cruise Movie Ever Made Goes to …

Jack and jill (2011).

If you thought that Speed 2 Cruise Control  was bad, this is the cinematic turkey to beat all cinematic turkeys.

Improbably, Adam Sandler plays twins Jack and Jill who join their family on a cruise vacation. Jack and Jill is so unfunny and its plot so preposterous, that I don’t have the will to say any more about it.

This became the first film to sweep the board of the Razzies, winning in each category including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Actor, Worst Actress, and Worst Screenplay. The cruise ship scenes were filmed aboard Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas .

“The Perfect Storm” is a 2000 movie based on the true story of the Andrea Gail, a commercial fishing vessel that was lost at sea during the “perfect storm” of 1991. The movie stars George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and Diane Lane and was directed by Wolfgang Petersen.

The perfect storm

The film tells the story of a group of fishermen from Gloucester, Massachusetts who set out to sea for a routine fishing trip. However, they soon find themselves caught in the path of a massive storm, with waves as high as 100 feet. The crew of the Andrea Gail, along with other ships caught in the storm, struggle to survive against the relentless power of the sea.

“The Perfect Storm” is a gripping and intense drama that offers a realistic portrayal of the dangers of commercial fishing and the unpredictability of the ocean. The performances by the cast, particularly Clooney and Wahlberg, are strong, and the special effects used to create the storm scenes are impressive.

Overall, “The Perfect Storm” is a well-made and emotionally impactful movie that captures the spirit of the original true story. It’s a testament to the bravery and resilience of those who make their living at sea, and a reminder of the power and beauty of the natural world.

Storyline: The movie tells the story of the brave crew of Andrea Gail, which is headed by Captain Billy Tyne, played by George Clooney. It follows the boat’s unfortunate journey in the Flemish Cap, Atlantic Ocean, which turns into a nightmare. After a dismal catch at the sea, Captain Billy persuades the crew of Andrea Gail for one more fishing adventure, despite a dangerous weather.

He is a proud swordboat captain and his loyal crew and him embark on a late season fishing expedition. However, when they decide to brave a storm on their way back things go awry terribly and in a tragic turn of events the crew never makes it back.

As fate would have it the weather turns ugly forcing the captain to call in a Mayday but eventually meets a deadly end. A gripping tale of bravery and camaraderie even in the face of death, this movie also remains a testament to the love of sailing.

Why I loved The perfect Storm? because of this opening dialogue….

“The fog’s just lifting. You throw off your bow line, throw off your stern. You head out the South Channel…. past Nile’s Island and wave to the lighthouse, seagulls, big dump ducks & that last sight of the land . The sun hits you, Head North, open up to 12.. You’re steaming now. The guy’s are busy, you’re in command. You know what? You’re a goddamn captain of the ship. Is there anything in the world?

“The Poseidon Adventure” is a classic disaster movie that is well-known for its gripping storyline and impressive visual effects. The film boasts an all-star cast, including Gene Hackman, Shelley Winters, and Leslie Nielsen, who deliver memorable performances as the survivors struggling to escape the capsized ship.

The film’s impressive set design and special effects create a vivid and realistic depiction of the disaster, and the tension and suspense build steadily throughout the film. The characters are well-developed, and the audience is invested in their plight and rooting for their survival.

ocean voyage movies

Storyline: The story of SS Poseidon, which is on its final voyage before going to a scrapyard, was way ahead of its times back in 1972. But the risk paid off and Poseidon Adventure went on to become one of the very successful sea-inspired movies. The movie involves the capsizing of the luxury liner which is on its way to get dismantled. Gene Hackman plays Reverend Scott, who helps fellow passengers to reach the hull of the ship.

What’s the worst thing that can happen while you’re enjoying a cruise on a luxury liner – yep you guessed it, a rogue giant wave that sinks your ship. While the plot line is thin, the visual effects are beautiful and got the film nominated for the same category in the 79th Academy Awards.

A well-shot film about a group’s escape from a sinking luxury liner, this movie serves to remind us of the dangers out at sea.

8. Pirates of the Caribbean: Whole series

The “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise is a series of swashbuckling adventure films that follow the story of Captain Jack Sparrow (played by Johnny Depp) and his various adventures on the high seas. Here is a summary of each film in the series:

The first film in the series introduces us to Captain Jack Sparrow, a witty and eccentric pirate who is on a mission to reclaim his stolen ship, the Black Pearl. Along the way, he teams up with Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), a blacksmith who is trying to rescue his love interest Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) from the clutches of the villainous Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush).

In this sequel, Jack Sparrow is pursued by the ghostly Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) and his crew of cursed sailors, who are seeking revenge against him for breaking a deal they made years earlier. Meanwhile, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann join forces with Sparrow to try and locate the legendary Dead Man’s Chest, which is said to hold the key to defeating Davy Jones.

The third film in the series sees Sparrow, Turner, and Swann joining forces with pirate lords from around the world to battle the East India Trading Company, led by the ruthless Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander). Along the way, they must navigate treacherous waters and confront their own personal demons as they try to save their friends and defeat their enemies.

In this fourth installment, Jack Sparrow sets out on a quest to find the Fountain of Youth, but he faces stiff competition from the villainous pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and the beautiful but deadly Angelica (Penelope Cruz).

The most recent film in the series sees Jack Sparrow teaming up with a young astronomer named Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario) and a determined sailor named Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites) to find the legendary Trident of Poseidon, which has the power to break all curses of the sea. Meanwhile, they are pursued by the undead pirate Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), who is seeking revenge against Sparrow.

If anyone loves movies about ships, and how they call to the free souls, they will love Jack Sparrow and his love for his vessel, the Black Pearl. The entire franchise is about pirates so there are numerous ships throughout the films but I have chosen this film for a particular purpose.

The extraordinarily long movie culminates in one of the most satisfying naval battles between the free-spirited pirates and the English navy that seeks to quash them. The fight between Black Pearl and Davy Jones’ the Dutchman remains etched in one’s memory as an old-school naval battle with cannons blazing. Hoist the colors high and watch this tale of free men who refused to conform to the rules.

You cannot talk about the seas and ships without mentioning the hugely popular movie that broke all the records. Titanic was based on the maiden voyage of the ill-fated passenger liner by the same name, which sank into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean.

Though the real life incident was gruesome and dark, James Cameron made the movie with romance as the main theme, which eventually struck a chord with the movie goers making it the highest grosser of all times. Perhaps the most recognized vessel name, the plot revolves around the actual sinking of the Titanic in the tragic crash against the iceberg.

A film that typecast a Hollywood success formula of a boy meets a girl from different walks of life and an illicit love blossoms against all odds and meets a tragic end, the film is raised to extraordinary levels through Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s acting. Titanic remains the world’s most popular movie about ships and perhaps will for the considerable future.

“Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” is a 2003 historical war drama film directed by Peter Weir and starring Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany. The movie is based on two novels from the Aubrey–Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian.

Set during the Napoleonic Wars, the film follows the story of Captain Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe) and his crew aboard the HMS Surprise as they pursue the French privateer Acheron around South America. Aubrey is determined to capture the Acheron, which is causing havoc for British shipping, but he faces numerous challenges along the way, including a fierce storm and a mutiny by some of his crew.

The film is notable for its attention to historical accuracy and its portrayal of life aboard a 19th-century warship. The battle scenes are particularly well-done, with the filmmakers using practical effects and minimal CGI to create a sense of realism.

Watch it for,

  • Starring Russel Crowe as Jack Aubrey in this epic war drama made the right waves at the Oscars and won two awards but lost out on other counts to Lord of the Rings. However, the plot is tightly packed with naval chases with the British navy’s HMS Surprise in the trail of French privateer’s ship the Acheron.
  • However, the Acheron gets the upper hand in multiple skirmishes but Aubrey remains hot on the pursuit and the movie ends with the chase still going on as Acheron’s captain tricks Aubrey into believing in his victory on the one occasion that the HMS Surprise actually lives up to its name and surprises Acheron. A finely made film, this movie is a must watch for any lover of ships and war movies.

“All Is Lost” is a 2013 survival drama film written and directed by J.C. Chandor and starring Robert Redford. The movie tells the story of a lone sailor, played by Redford, who is stranded at sea after his yacht collides with a shipping container.

During a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, a veteran mariner (Robert Redford) awakes to find his vessel taking on water after a collision with a stray shipping container. With his radio and navigation equipment disabled, he sails unknowingly into a violent storm and barely escapes with his life. With any luck, the ocean currents may carry him into a shipping lane — but, with supplies dwindling and the sharks circling, the sailor is forced to face his own mortality.

The film follows the sailor as he struggles to survive and find a way back to civilization, despite facing a series of challenges and setbacks, including a fierce storm and dwindling supplies. With limited resources and no means of communication, the sailor must rely on his own skills and ingenuity to stay alive and navigate his way to safety.

“All Is Lost” is a powerful and emotional film that delivers a captivating and immersive experience for viewers. The lack of dialogue and minimalism of the film creates a sense of isolation and desperation, which adds to the tension and drama of the story. Robert Redford’s performance is exceptional, with his portrayal of the sailor’s determination and resourcefulness adding to the film’s emotional depth.

“Adrift” is a 2018 movie based on the true story of Tami Oldham Ashcraft, a woman who sailed from Tahiti to San Diego with her boyfriend Richard Sharp in 1983. During their journey, they encountered a massive hurricane that damaged their boat and left Richard seriously injured. Tami had to navigate the damaged boat and try to reach Hawaii while dealing with the storm and caring for Richard.

The movie stars Shailene Woodley as Tami and Sam Claflin as Richard, and was directed by Baltasar Kormákur. It received mixed reviews from critics but was praised for the performances of the lead actors and its realistic portrayal of the dangers of sailing.

Review & Storyline:

“Adrift” is a gripping and emotional survival drama that is based on a true story. The movie does an excellent job of portraying the physical and emotional struggles that Tami Oldham Ashcraft faced during her harrowing ordeal. Shailene Woodley delivers a standout performance as Tami, conveying both her strength and vulnerability in equal measure. Sam Claflin is also excellent as Richard, Tami’s boyfriend and sailing partner.

What really happened to Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp on their journey across the Pacific?

The movie, which is based on a true story, stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin as Tami Oldham Ashcraft and Richard Sharp, two sailors who embarked on a voyage from Tahiti to San Diego in 1983 and ran smack into Hurricane Raymond. The movie depicts the events leading up to their trip as well as the storm and its aftermath, but the movie doesn’t tell quite the whole story.

she did emphasize that her sextant was what saved her life. “…I tell you, that sextant saved my life. Even if it’s a plastic sextant—I always say that if you’re going to do ocean crossings, make sure there’s a sextant onboard with the relevant tables. Because in the end, if all the batteries go, you have that to fall back on. And that is what saved my life.”

Overall, “Adrift” is a well-crafted film that offers a moving and intense viewing experience. While it may not be a groundbreaking survival movie, it’s a solid and engaging entry in the genre, and a testament to the power of the human spirit in the face of extreme adversity.

“Believing in everything at the same time is the same as not believing in anything at all”.

Ang Lee’s Life Of Pi is a magical, fantastical therapy for the eyes. If somehow you aren’t pleased with the movie, your eyes sure will be. Hope has never been more triumphant in a film full of tragedy. Life of Pi tells the story of an Indian boy who has been shipwrecked on a lifeboat, with only a tiger as his only company. Thirsty, hungry, and alone, Pi’s options are limited.

He finds purpose in watching the tiger that has become his only friend. Along the way, Pi encounters many strange phenomenon along the way, which makes you wonder if Pi actually saw that or didn’t. Either way, this story is one that shows triumph of the human spirit and hope that it will make you think anything is possible.

The film follows Pi’s journey as he struggles to survive at sea, facing hunger, thirst, and the constant threat of the tiger. As the days pass, Pi forms an unlikely bond with the animal, learning to respect and understand its wild nature. The film also explores Pi’s spiritual journey, as he grapples with the meaning of life and the nature of God.

“Life of Pi” is a visually stunning movie, with breathtaking cinematography and impressive special effects that bring the ocean and its inhabitants to life. The performances by the cast, particularly Sharma, are excellent, and the story is both poignant and thought-provoking.

“Captain Phillips” is a 2013 biographical drama film directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Tom Hanks. The movie is based on the true story of the 2009 hijacking of the MV Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates.

The film follows the story of Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), who is in charge of the MV Maersk Alabama when it is attacked by a group of Somali pirates. The pirates, led by the volatile Muse (Barkhad Abdi), take Phillips hostage and demand a ransom for his release. The situation becomes increasingly tense as the US Navy intervenes, leading to a dramatic standoff between Phillips and the pirates.

Captain phillips poster movie

“Captain Phillips” is a tense and emotionally powerful film that skillfully combines action and drama. The performances by the cast, particularly Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi, are exceptional, with Hanks delivering one of his most impressive performances in years. The film also does an excellent job of exploring the motivations of the Somali pirates, showing the desperation and poverty that drives them to take such extreme measures.

This is one of the toughest, most naked performances of Hanks’ stellar career. It’s sometimes painful and heart wrenching to watch. He’s an Everyman, per usual, but he’s not also a savior or a hero. He doesn’t suddenly develop super strength and overpower the bad guys. He’s just a guy in charge of a ship and its passengers.

BASED ON A TRUE STORY: In April 2009, the U.S. containership Maersk Alabama sails toward its destination on a day that seems like any other. Suddenly, Somali pirates race toward the vessel, climb aboard and take everyone hostage. The captain of the ship, Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), looks to protect his crew from the hostile invaders, and their leader, Muse. The pirates are after millions of dollars, and Phillips must use his wits to make sure everyone survives and returns home safely.

“Greyhound” is a 2020 war drama film directed by Aaron Schneider and starring Tom Hanks. The movie is based on the novel “The Good Shepherd” by C.S. Forester and tells the story of a US Navy Commander named Ernest Krause (Tom Hanks) who leads a convoy of Allied ships across the Atlantic during World War II.

The film focuses on the dangers and challenges that Krause and his crew face as they battle German submarines and protect their convoy from attack. With limited resources and a small fleet of destroyers, Krause must make difficult decisions to protect his crew and ensure the safety of the convoy.

Greyhound (2020) -

“Greyhound” is a well-crafted and tense film that effectively captures the chaos and danger of naval warfare during World War II. The performances by the cast, particularly Tom Hanks, are strong and help to anchor the film’s emotional core. The special effects and action sequences are also impressive, creating a sense of realism and intensity that keeps the audience on the edge of their seat.

U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ernest Krause is assigned to lead an Allied convoy across the Atlantic during World War II. His convoy, however, is pursued by German U-boats.

Although this is Krause’s first wartime mission, he finds himself embroiled in what would come to be known as the longest, largest and most complex naval battle in history: The Battle of the Atlantic

Keep reading and you'll be inspired while waiting to get off dry land when it's safe to do so.

Table of contents

All is Lost (2013)

For lone sailors, All is Lost is probably the best movie to give you a glimpse of what might go wrong for you if you decide to sail the big blue ocean alone. With a near-mute performance as an old man who loves sailing alone, Robert Redford puts in an almost quasi-silent performance by portraying the ordeal of what a lone sailor can undergo when the sea turns on you.

Directed by JC Chandor, there's only one person on the screen throughout the film. He's all alone in the vast sea with his damaged boat. He has to become tough, resourceful, and calm even when things turn against him. Single-character movies are a rarity even today but this is a great survival film that perfectly depicts what could happen even to the hardest lone sailors out there.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)

Directed by the talented Peter Weir, this critically-acclaimed movie was nominated for 10 Oscars and won for best cinematography and sound editing. Depicting the return of the high-seas adventure, this movie is skillfully and meticulously adapted from the historical novel by Patrick O'Brian set during the Napoleonic Wars and starring Russell Crowe.

Crowe plays an arrogant captain who pushes his ship crew to the limits while trying to capture a French warship. This movie offers action-packed battle scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This movie gives you an insight of what sailors undergo in their struggles to make it through the high-seas alive.

Captain Ron (1992)

With little sailing experience but with an inherited yacht moored on an offshore island Martin Short hires charismatic Captain Ron to take them back to Florida. The voyage isn't as easy as they expected as they have to face pirates, breakdowns, and other obstacles. They all get more than what they bargained for.

Portrayed by Kurt Russell, Captain Ron depicts the misadventures of a nominal sailing character that is hired by an upper-middle-class father to guide a yacht through the Caribbean. From the marine accidents, pirates, guerilla carnivals to malfunctioning equipment, and Russell's croaked absurdities, this movie is just full of double humor and worthy performance.

Wind (1992)

As one of the biggest races in competitive sailing, America's Cup is often associated with rich people competing in weird-looking boats. But this movie changes this as it takes viewers through the eyes of tanned and rugged Will Parker as played by Matthew Modine. He's hired by a self-made millionaire (Cliff Robertson) to lead his crew in the competition.

Together with his girlfriend Kate who is an equally skilled sailor, Parker intends to win America's Cup but Kate is thrown off the crew leaving Parker angry. When the crew loses America's Cup to the Australians, Parker decides to form his own syndicate to win back the cup.

White Squall (1996)

This movie follows a young man's adventure movie that follows a group of high school students who boards the brigantine ship called Albatross for their senior year at sea. They sail to the tip of South America and back. They get to accept responsibility, learn how to be sailors, and grow up.

The skipper of the ship, Christopher Sheldon together with the 13 teenage boys set sail for an eight-month voyage. The boys soon discover Sheldon's psyche gradations, rattling tension, and freak storms that sink the ship. As a sailor, you'll be disturbed by the fact that four students and two crew members drown, leaving skipper Sheldon facing a fierce tribunal, tortured conscience, and grieving parents and students.

Mutiny on the Bounty (1962)

As one of the greatest epic movies of the 1960s, English Captain Bligh is on a sea voyage to transport breadfruit from England to Jamaica. He is so abusive that he gets on the nerves of his crew members, especially 1st Lieutenant, Fletcher Christian.

Tension eases when they reach Jamaica and the crew indulges in the island's lifestyle but the captain claps some members of his crew in irons as they try to desert. Further abuses lead Fletcher to inspire a mutiny against the Captain. Fletcher and his men set the Captain and his loyal members afloat in a rowboat. This movie offers a realistic depiction of a larger-than-life character that most sailors are known for.

Dead Calm (1989)

Starring Billy Zane, Nicole Kidman, Sam Neil, and a gorgeous 60 ft. ketch, Dead Calm revolves around a mass-murderer who kidnaps and seduces a young beautiful woman after leaving a husband to die on a vessel whose crew he has just murdered.

This movie was filmed in the Whitsundays Islands of Australia, which is one of the best sailing destinations in the world. Bringing forth an epic combination of deadly sailing conditions , complete isolation from the rest of the world, and a skillful villain aboard the vessel, this movie is thrilling and will leave you looking behind your back whenever you're out there on the sea.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)

This adventure-comedy follows the high journeys of Steve Zissou, a character adaptation of French oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau. It follows his ocean expedition when tracking the ‘jaguar shark' that apparently ate his partner, Esteban.

Esteban had been working with Zissou on a documentary about mysterious circumstances by a shark. This is a sharp film with lots of fun and adventure on the sea.

Kon-Tiki (2012)

Legendary Norwegian explorer and ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl believes that the South Sea Islands were originally colonized by South Americans. Thor, who fears water and doesn't know how to swim, partakes on a voyage in 1947 to prove his belief. Together with five crew members, set sail from Peru on a balsa-wood ancient raft.

Even though their only modern equipment is a radio, they have to navigate through the ocean while relying on stars and ocean currents and they achieve the impossible after exhausting three months at the sea. This is a very spirited adventure that depicts what's possible when we believe in our dreams.

Maidentrip (2013)

A 14-year-old sailor by the name Laura Dekker sets sail on a two-year voyage in pursuit of her dream to become the world's youngest sailor. Laura sets out from Holland and sails throughout the world. Apart from the occasional foul language that Laura uses now and then on the documentary, this is an excellent film that shows what one can achieve when he/she lives her dream and works hard towards achieving it.

The documentary, however, doesn't suggest that Laura is alarmingly young to sail across the unforgiving Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Instead, she's depicted as an independent outsider who is looking for paradise in a never-ending sea.

Adrift (2018)

In most cases, sailors seem to never anticipate that they may sail directly into a catastrophic hurricane and this is exactly what Richard Sharp and Tami Oldham do when they sail directly in one of the worst hurricanes ever recorded in history.

Tami awakes in the aftermath of the hurricane to find their boat in ruins and Richard is badly injured. And because they do not have any hope that they would ever get help or get rescued, Tami is left with two options: sit there and perish or find strength and determination to save herself as well as the only man she's ever loved.

Turning Tide (En Solitaire) (2013)

In this daring tale, this movie portrays how a fearless sailor known as Yann Kermadec finds a lot of obstacles in his biggest race as a two-hander named Turning Tide falls flat. In a nail-biting tension, the story begins when Kermadec replaces the main skipper in the Vendee Globe on short notice.

After some smooth sailing, things go eerily wrong for the sailor as his ship is damaged and he's forced to anchor off the Canary Islands to repair it. When he gets back on his journey, he soon discovers that a Mauritanian teenage boy has sneaked inside the boat and he has no option but to sail with him at least until they cross the Atlantic Ocean.

The Old Man and the Sea (1958)

An old Cuban angler known as Spencer Tracy is so unlucky that he hasn't caught any fish in 84 days. And despite the commitment of a young boy to bring him food, the angler fears that he's forever lucky but catches a small fish on his 85th day, so he decides to keep fishing.

When one of his many fishing lines hooks a large marlin, he decides not to go back to the shore until he reels it in. For almost two days and nights, he has no choice but to sit there and do everything he can to redeem himself from what seems like a perpetual failure.

Morning Light (2008)

By entering the TRANSPAC, which is one of the world's best open-ocean competitions, 15 young men and women prepare for a sailing adventure of their lives. With world-class teachers, these sailors begin intense training in Hawaii but only reach a climax in an elimination process that comes in the form of who-stays-and-who-goes process.

This documentary follows these sailors for six months as they embark on a 2,300-mile sailing ordeal, which starts in Los Angeles and ends in Honolulu.

The Perfect Storm (2000)

Created by Wolfgang Petersen, The Perfect Storm is a blockbuster that's big on visuals and depicts an action-packed escapade on the water as Captain Billy Tyne and his crew set on a fishing expedition aboard a ship known as Andrea Gail.

They're soon caught up in a catastrophic destructive storm when they decide to risk the storm and have to deal with a very powerful hurricane. At the height of their fishing expedition, their ice machine breaks down and the only way to ensure that their catch doesn't go stale is by hurrying back to the shore to sell their catch. This is exactly why they decide to risk their lives and it doesn't turn out as they expected.

Captain Phillips (2013)

When Captain Richard Phillips takes command of an unarmed container ship known as MV Maersk Alabama from the port of Salalah in Oman, they anticipate that they'll be attacked by Somali Pirates on their way to Mombasa, Kenya.

They attack the ship and Captain Phillips has to use his wits and diplomacy to negotiate with the pirates and save his crew.

Maiden (2018)

As the saying goes; what a man can do a woman can do even better. This is exactly what's depicted by this sailing movie that follows the life of Tracy Edwards as she leads the first all-female crew when competing in the Whitbread Round the World Race.

Covering 33,000 miles and lasting for nine months, this is a truly grueling race that depicts the corrosive sexism that still exists in the sailing world as well as the ocean terrors that sailors have to deal with during voyages or competitions.

Chasing Bubbles (2016)

This is a captivating documentary that follows the journey of Alex Rust who is a free spirit who gives the normal life to sail around the world. Alex is brought up as a farm boy but becomes a stock trader in Indiana. At the age of 25, he decides to abandon his life in Chicago, buys a modest sailboat known as Bubbles and embarks on a very unique free-spirited voyage. It takes him three years to sail around the world and to quench his insatiable curiosity while meeting great people and fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming a free soul.

This is a breathtaking travelogue that depicts the sailing life of a truly absorbing character.

180° South (2010)

Directed by Chris Malloy, this is a sailing documentary that covers the journey of Jeff Johnson as he travels from Ventura, California to Patagonia in Chile. He does this to retrace the same trip covered by Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins in 1968.

While the two initial explorers made the journey on the land, Johnson travels by sea using a small boat.

Deep Water (2006)

This movie follows the true-life story of Donald Crowhurst, an inexperienced British sailor who enters the Golden Globe, which is the first nonstop boat race in the world. Donald puts up his home as collateral to gain financial backing to compete in the race but soon finds himself on the wrong end of things as he enters the race under-prepared.

Best Underwater Adventure Movies, Ranked

Many movies have captured the mysteries of the ocean. Here, we celebrate some of the best underwater adventure movies.

The deep blue ocean is one of the most mysterious places on earth, from its astounding array of marine life to the secrets it holds, from ship wreckage to undiscovered depths. Over the years, many films have captured the haunting beauty and mystery of the ocean. From sunken treasure to maniacal sea creatures, to real-life tragedy and everything in between. Here, Movieweb has compiled a list of some of the best underwater adventure movies in film history.

Whether exploring the deep blue sea for underwater civilizations, setting records for ocean free-diving, learning of advanced alien life, or fighting for survival against a man-eating shark (or whale) — whether based on fact or fiction — one thing this compilation of movies proves is the ocean is every bit as fascinating on the big screen as it is in real life. If you are as intrigued by underwater wonders as we are, be sure to check out our list of the best underwater adventure movies, ranked.

13 City Beneath the Sea

City Beneath the Sea may not be known for its ratings; however, this pulpy quintessential B-movie is hard to resist. The 1953 film stars Robert Ryan and Anthony Quinn as two deep sea divers who are hired by some unsavory characters, to retrieve some sunken gold. If you are watching this movie for the plot, you may find yourself disappointed, but if it’s pure popcorn entertainment you’re after, it’s well worth your time.

12 The Deep

Based on a novel by Peter Benchley, The Deep is a 1977 adventure thriller starring Jacqueline Bissett, Nick Nolte, and Robert Shaw. It follows the adventures of a young couple who, while vacationing in Bermuda, find a secret entrance into a sunken World War II ship. In the wreck, they find the cargo hold full of treasure, and medicinal morphine. This discovery catches the attention of a local drug kingpin who wants the treasure for himself. The massive success of Jaws in 1975 (also an adaptation of a Peter Benchley novel) inspired the adaptation of The Deep .

11 Moby Dick

Based on the 1851 Herman Melville novel of the same name, Moby Dick stars Gregory Peck as the fanatical Captain Ahab who puts his obsession with killing the treacherous white whale over the safety of his men. The screenplay was written by author Ray Bradbury, and the film was directed by John Huston. The film is a tour de force through and through, a great adaptation of the source material, and represents some of Huston’s best work.

10 The Poseidon Adventure

Based on Paul Gallico’s 1969 novel of the same name, The Poseidon Adventure is a great underwater disaster film, that follows the passengers of SS Poseidon a luxury ocean liner on her final voyage from New York to Athens. On New Year’s Eve, the magnificent ship capsized after being hit by a Tsunami. The film follows the passengers in their fight for survival as they make their way out of the deteriorating ship. The film was released in the same era as other well-known disaster films of the time , such as Airport and The Towering Inferno , helping to launch a disaster film craze.

9 20000 Leagues Under the Sea

Based on the popular novel by Jules Verne, 20000 Leagues Under The Sea has seen several adaptations for both radio and film. However, the definitive version remains Disney’s 1954 film starring Kirk Douglas. The film explores deep sea exploration and the discovery of nuclear energy. Disney has recently announced its plan to release a 10-part limited series spinoff titled Nautilus that will examine the origins of Captain Nemo.

Moana is an animated underwater adventure featuring voice performances from Auli’i Cravalho and Duane Johnson. The film follows an adventurous teenager who must fulfill her destiny to save her people and find her true identity. The film is all about girl power and features a strong female lead that does not need saving, but rather is the hero herself. Moana is also the first Disney film that doesn’t have a love interest for the female protagonist or a romantic subplot, which is a huge step in the right direction toward telling better stories for young girls.

7 Mutiny on the Bounty

Mutiny on the Bounty is an epic war drama starring Marlon Brando, that is based on the novel of the same name by Charles Nordoff, and James Nordon Hall. The film features a dramatized account of the real-life mutiny aboard the HMS Bounty on April 28, 1789. The mutiny saw acting-Lieutenant Fletcher Christian seize control of the ship from Captain William Bligh and force him and 18 of his crewmen onto a small boat and set them adrift in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

6 The Big Blue

The Big Blue, also known under the French title Le Grand Bleu , is a highly dramatized account of the friendship of rival championship free divers Jacques Mayol and Enzo Maiorca. The pair is played by Jean-Marc Barr and Jean Reno respectively. The film was a huge success in its native France, whereas an American adaptation was less successful in the U.S..

DC’s Aquaman is one of the greatest underwater adventure movies for its stunning interpretation of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. It is a delight to explore the mysteries of the ocean in James Wan’s visual masterpiece. True fans of the film consider it one of the best in the DC Universe. Furthermore, Jason Momoa steals the show in the role he was born to play. Momoa will reprise his role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is set for release on Dec 25, 2023.

4 The Abyss

The Abyss is a James Cameron-directed science fiction film that follows a U.S. search and recovery team on their mission to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean to retrieve a sunken submarine. While on their mission, the specialized team crosses paths with highly intelligent and benevolent alien life. Decades later, The Abyss remains an outlier in Cameron’s filmography. While it may not have broken box office records or attained mass popularity The Abyss boasts spectacular practical effects that were very impressive for its time. It has even been said that The Abyss marked the beginning of special effects as we know them today.

Cameron’s Titanic just celebrated its 25th anniversary this past December. The spectacular underwater disaster film long held the record for highest-grossing film of all time, and even today ranks third behind Avengers: Endgame and Avatar . The movie is celebrated in this list for its most historically accurate depiction of the famed shipwreck in cinematic history. The film also inspired one of the greatest debates in movie history with the question, could Jack have fit on the giant door? Titanic is set for re-release in theaters Feb 10, 2023 to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

No list of underwater adventure films would be complete without this Steven Spielberg classic. When a deadly great white shark declares hunting season on the touristy beaches of Amity, local police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), Marine Biologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfus), and seasoned shark hunter Sam Quint (Robert Shaw) set out on a mission to exterminate the beast.

Jaws , based on the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley, helped catapult Steven Spielberg to superstardom and became the definitive blueprint for blockbuster films as we know them today. Despite its tremendous success, the popularity of the film also came with dire consequences for sharks, as the "Jaws Effect" took hold. Since the 1975 release of the film the shark population has seen a cataclysmal decline. Spielberg recently opened up about his sorrow for how the film changed people's perceptions of sharks and ultimately led to their decimation.

1 Avatar: The Way of Water

Avatar: The Way of Water follows Jake and Ney'tiri who have started a family and must explore Pandora for a new home. When an old threat resurfaces, Jake is at odds against the humans. The long awaited sequel to Avatar is currently taking the world by storm and its no wonder why, the film is transforming underwater filming with its use of underwater motion capture technology that looks incredible.

Movies That Take Place Primarily Underwater, Ranked

Vote up the best films that take place (mostly) beyond dry land.

Earth's oceans are deep, vast, and full of mystery. Most of us will never know what it's like to dive thousands of feet below sea level and witness the natural wonders under the surface. Maybe that's why filmgoers are so fascinated by movies about deep sea exploration.

Whether they're submarine stories like The Hunt for Red October and Crimson Tide , horror tales like Underwater  and Deep Blue Sea , or more whimsical films about magical undersea kingdoms like  The Little Mermaid and  Aquaman , movies set in the ocean give audiences a chance to dive into a world most of us are unfamiliar with.

But which movie in this subgenre (pun intended) goes the deepest? Vote up your favorite underwater films by how deep they travel.

Finding Nemo

Finding Nemo

What's It About?  Marlin (Albert Brooks) is a helicopter parent/widower clownfish whose precocious son, Nemo (Alexander Gould), is captured and dumped in a dentist's office fish tank. As Marlin hunts through the ocean for his missing child, he's joined on the journey by the forgetful royal blue tang fish Dory (Ellen DeGeneres).

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters? There are whales, electric jellyfish, and some pretty intimidating sharks, but this is a kids movie, so it's never particularly scary.

How Deep Does It Go? The depth of a clownfish's habitat rarely exceeds 12 meters, or 40 feet. However, at one point Marlin and Dory encounter an anglerfish, which must put them somewhere around 600 meters (1,968 feet).

The Abyss

What's It About?  The inhabitants of an experimental undersea drilling platform discover an alien intelligence while attempting to salvage a sinking submarine. The designer of the platform, Dr. Lindsey Brigman (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), volunteers for the salvage mission despite the presence of her soon-to-be ex-husband Virgil "Bud" Brigman (Ed Harris). Their relationship is tested through various crises related to the underwater alien presence.

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters?  Yes. Our heroes encounter aliens, though the film refers to them as "non-terrestrial intelligences" (NTIs), which sounds slightly less silly than "UFOs" or "ETs." Alien probes, the famous Water Tentacle, and the butterfly-like NTIs themselves all make appearances.

How Deep Does It Go?  Very, very deep. The movie starts in a trench and only goes deeper, as Lindsey plumbs the depths in search of a wayward missile. Earlier in the film, crew member "Catfish" says the eponymous abyss runs "2½ miles straight down," which is 13,200 feet. Now, that's nowhere near as deep as some underwater spots, but Catfish is presumably counting from the oil rig's location, not the ocean's surface, so it would be deeper still.

Another crew member, "Hippy," tracks Bud's depth during his final plunge. The last number he calls out is 17,000 feet, but Bud falls a long way further after that. It's possible that Bud goes no further than 25,217 feet, which is the maximum depth of the Cayman Trough , where the movie is supposed to be set.

Interestingly, Abyss director James Cameron himself did a solo descent to the bottom of the Challenger Deep in 2012, only the second time such a manned descent was ever made. Reaching a depth of 35,756 feet, Cameron went far deeper than Bud could have gone, albeit in a submersible, not a suit. But Cameron didn't see any NTIs down there - just tiny, shrimplike creatures.

Also, the movie's ending revolves around the power of love conquering all, which is pretty deep when you think about it.

The Hunt for Red October

The Hunt for Red October

What's It About?  When Soviet submarine commander Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) decides to defect to the United States and hand over the highly advanced sub Red October , only CIA analyst Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) can ensure Ramius and his crew's safety as they attempt to evade capture at the hands of both the Soviet and US Navies.

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters?  No, unless you think that the simmering tension between the Soviet Union and the United States, as well as the threat of mutually assured destruction, is some sort of metaphorical monster.

How Deep Does It Go?  This is a submarine movie, so you can only go so deep before the pressure compresses your boat. Red October is supposed to be a modified Typhoon -class Soviet sub, meaning that its maximum operational depth would be about 1,300 feet.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

What's It About?  Kirk Douglas plays Ned Land, a member of an expedition to discover the cause of a series of mysterious strikes on ships in the Pacific Ocean. He is captured by the enigmatic Captain Nemo (James Mason) of the futuristic submarine Nautilus . When it is revealed that the Nautilus is responsible for the onslaught, Land and his compatriots try everything to escape Nemo's clutches.

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters?  You can have a giant squid - as a treat.

How Deep Does It Go?  The "league" is a unit of measurement that varies from country to country. In English-speaking countries, it's 3 miles. But in France, the metric lieue (the word actually used by Jules Verne) is about 2½ miles. However, no vessel could possibly attain a depth of 20,000 leagues, as that would be about 50,000 miles - and Earth's radius (the distance from its center to its surface) is only about 4,000 miles. What gives?

The answer is that Verne's title refers not to the depth of the vessel underwater, but the total distance traveled while underwater. In the novel, the Nautilus attains a depth of 16,000 meters (about 52,000 feet) or four leagues (according to chapter 11 in the book). Even that is considerably deeper than the deepest point known to modern science - the Challenger Deep, near Guam - which descends almost 11,000 meters (36,000 feet).

Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Atlantis: The Lost Empire

What's It About?  Linguist and cartographer Milo Thatch (Michael J. Fox) engages in an expedition to what he believes is the location of the fabled city of Atlantis. The villainous mercenary Commander Rourke (James Garner) seeks to rob Atlantis of its treasures and sell them to the highest bidder. Only Milo and his friends on the submarine Ulysses can save Atlantis from this threat.

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters?  Since this film takes place in the lost underwater city of Atlantis, there are all manner of exotic creatures, including a robot that guards the entrance to the city.

How Deep Does It Go?  Believers in Atlantis tend to place the original legendary island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, which has a maximum depth of around 27,493 feet . So while Atlantis could be very deep, James Cameron and Captain Nemo definitely went deeper.

The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid

What's It About?  Mermaid princess Ariel (Jodi Benson) falls in love with the human Prince Eric (Christopher Daniel Barnes), which causes her to abandon her life under the sea to be (all together, now) a part of his world. Ariel will have to overcome the meddling of evil sea witch Ursula if she wants to avoid becoming a poor, unfortunate soul and live happily ever after with her prince. Will Eric get to kiss the girl? Only one way to find out.

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters?  The Little Mermaid includes talking fish, a talking crab, a half-woman/half-octopus, and a mermaid.

How Deep Does It Go?  Not deep enough. The undersea scenes are located in relatively shallow depths where familiar fish species thrive, and the whole plot of the movie is about Ariel trying to escape her life underwater. One might even argue that this movie is anti-ocean.

Aquaman

What's It About?  An adaptation of the DC Comics character Arthur Curry, heir to the throne of Atlantis. The half-human Aquaman has the power to talk to fish and various other sea creatures. Aquaman clashes against his nefarious half-brother the Ocean Master for control of the sea while coming to terms with his mixed heritage.

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters?  Most of the characters in this movie would qualify as "sea creatures."

How Deep Does It Go?  In order to claim the throne of Atlantis, Aquaman has to venture into a hidden kingdom all the way at the center of Earth. So, yeah. Deep.

The Poseidon Adventure

The Poseidon Adventure

What's It About? The venerable ocean liner SS Poseidon overturns in the middle of the ocean, trapping its passengers inside the ship. The Reverend Frank Scott (Gene Hackman) attempts to save as many people as he can before the boat goes under.

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters?  Nope. This is a pure disaster movie with no magic, sci-fi, or fantasy elements. The only objective is to survive.

How Deep Does It Go?  The ship is upside down and slowly sinks during the runtime of the movie. So we're not talking more than a couple hundred feet, max.

Deep Blue Sea

Deep Blue Sea

What's It About?  Genetic modifications create super-smart sharks that threaten to eat the inhabitants of an underwater research facility.

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters? There's a giant, hyper-intelligent shark that eats Samuel L. Jackson.

How Deep Does It Go?  The word "deep" is in the title, but really, the undersea facility probably isn't that deep. The mako sharks being studied by the scientists have a habitat extending no further than 490 feet below sea level.

Das Boot

What's It About?  The crew of the WWII-era German U-boat U-96 struggles to survive during the Battle of the Atlantic.

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters?  Nope. This is a sober, serious historical drama. Not a single sea beast to be found. Just a lot of sweaty German men crammed into tight spaces.

How Deep Does It Go?  There is a scene where the U-96 has to dive below its test depth (750 feet for a Type VII U-boat) to avoid detection, which could completely wreck the ship due to the intense pressure. "Crush depth" for this vessel is estimated to be no deeper than 1,000 feet.

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

What's It About?  High-tech submarine Seaview is dispatched on a mission to save Earth from burning up in three weeks. In order to do this, the crew must fire a powerful device from the middle of the ocean. Don't worry if any of that makes sense. Look at the shiny submarine!

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters?  Can we interest you in a giant squid?

How Deep Does It Go?  All the way to the bottom of the sea. The deepest dive ever recorded was 35,853 feet, so you can imagine that the Seaview went pretty deep.

The Meg

What's It About?  British action icon Jason Statham plays rescue diver Jonas Taylor, who is hired by wealthy businessman Jack Morris (Rainn Wilson) to rescue a deep sea expedition captained by, of all people, his ex-wife. If this reminds you of the plot of The Abyss , then you've been paying attention. Except, instead of a "non-terrestrial intelligence," Taylor encounters a giant prehistoric shark.

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters?  Oh yes. A megalodon that is listed at 82 feet long and weighing in at a svelte 170 tons. There's also a cameo from a giant squid.

How Deep Does It Go?  Statham and company venture into our old friend the Mariana Trench , which runs as deep as 36,000 feet.

Crimson Tide

Crimson Tide

What's It About?  The captain (Gene Hackman) and executive officer (Denzel Washington) of a US Navy submarine clash over how to interpret an order to launch missiles during a protracted standoff off the coast of Russia.

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters? This is a serious, intense character study set around real geopolitical issues. It's footloose and monster-free.

How Deep Does It Go? Emotionally deep, for sure. There's plenty of discussion about age, experience, and the need to respect the chain of command. Physically, an Ohio -class submarine has a maximum operational depth of about 800 feet.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

What's It About?  Quirky oceanographer and documentary filmmaker Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) discovers he has a long-lost son (Owen Wilson) while on a mission to get revenge against the jaguar shark that ate his former partner (Seymour Cassel).

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters?  Who can forget the classic stop-motion jaguar shark sequence? Other than that, it's a fairly creatureless movie.

How Deep Does It Go?  We don't get properly deep until that climactic jaguar shark scene, and a solid amount of the movie takes place outside of the submarine Belafonte . Still, a movie about parental regret and loneliness is pretty deep.

Without spoiling a movie from 1998, let's just say the obvious answer is not the correct answer.

As you can imagine, that creature is hungry.

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters?  DeepStar Six has one monster that resembles an evil caterpillar.

How Deep Does It Go?  The heroes discover a complex underground cavern with mysterious beasts just waiting to eat as many human beings as possible. Also, "deep" is in the title of the film.

Other characters are voiced by icons of the mob movie genre, including director Martin Scorsese, Peter Falk, and Sopranos stars Michael Imperioli and Vincent Pastore. Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters?  The mutated corpses of the perished crew members turn into a gruesome, tentacled sea creature. It looks as if the predator and the Rancor from Return of the Jedi  had a baby.

How Deep Does It Go?  Once again, the story revolves around an underwater mining operation. That's deep.

Underwater

What's It About? An undersea   research team causes an earthquake that unleashes humanoid fish monsters that threaten to wipe out their base.

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters?  Creepy sea mutants that live under the Mariana Trench that kinda look like the Xenomorph from Alien , but also like a fish.

How Deep Does It Go? Not only does it go deep into the murky depths of the ocean (setting it in the Mariana Trench, which contains the 36,000-foot Challenger Deep, and placing the action potentially at the deepest point known to humankind), Underwater  is deeply concerned with the adverse effects of climate change on the aquatic ecosystem.

47 Meters Down

47 Meters Down

What's It About?  Mandy Moore and Claire Holt play sisters on holiday in Mexico who decide to do some shark-watching from the safety of a secure cage. Well, as you can imagine, everything goes wrong. Moore's character, Lisa, doesn't know anything about deep sea diving. So, when the cable on their cage breaks and sends them plummeting 47 meters below the surface of the ocean, the chances of survival are slim. Can our protagonists pull out a miracle?

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters? There are some sharks. That's about it. Sorry, this is a pretty simple movie.

How Deep Does It Go? Exactly 47 meters, or 154.2 feet for our American readers. Small potatoes by the standards of many films on this list, but scary enough if it happened to you.

Are There Sea Creatures/Monsters? You wouldn't dare call SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, or Plankton monsters, but they are talking sea creatures with arms and legs that wear clothes. When you think about it, that's kind of scary.

How Deep Does It Go?  It's safe to assume Bikini Bottom is beyond our ability to comprehend the concept of "deep," because no human being has ever discovered it.

Businesses hindered by Baltimore bridge collapse should receive damages, court filing argues

BALTIMORE (AP) — A Baltimore publishing company has filed a class action claim arguing the owner and manager of the massive container ship that took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge last month should have to pay damages to businesses adversely impacted by the collapse.

The claim, filed on behalf of American Publishing LLC, largely echoes an earlier filing by attorneys for Baltimore’s mayor and city council that called for the ship’s owner and manager to be held fully liable for the deadly disaster.

Singapore-based Grace Ocean Private Ltd. owns the Dali, the vessel that veered off course and slammed into the bridge. Synergy Marine Pte Ltd., also based in Singapore, is the ship’s manager.

The companies filed a petition soon after the March 26 collapse asking a court to cap their liability under a pre-Civil War provision of an 1851 maritime law — a routine but important procedure for such cases. A federal court in Maryland will decide who’s responsible and how much they owe in what could become one of the most expensive maritime disasters in history.

In their claim filed Thursday, attorneys for American Publishing accused the companies of negligence, arguing they should have realized the Dali was unfit for its voyage and staffed the ship with a competent crew, among other issues.

“Since the disastrous allision, commercial activities in and around Baltimore have virtually come to a standstill,” they wrote. “It could take several years for the area to recover fully .”

American Publishing saw its revenues plummet this month as local businesses halted advertising deals and other publishing requests following the collapse, the claim says.

A spokesperson for Synergy and Grace Ocean said Friday that it would be inappropriate to comment on the pending litigation at this time.

The ship was headed to Sri Lanka when it lost power shortly after leaving Baltimore and struck one of the bridge’s support columns, collapsing the span and sending six members of a roadwork crew plunging to their deaths.

FBI agents boarded the stalled ship last week amid a criminal investigation. A separate federal probe by the National Transportation Safety Board will include an inquiry into whether the ship experienced power issues before starting its voyage, officials have said. That investigation will focus generally on the Dali’s electrical system.

In their petition, Grace Ocean and Synergy sought to cap their liability at roughly $43.6 million. The petition estimates that the vessel itself is valued at up to $90 million and was owed over $1.1 million in income from freight. The estimate also deducts two major expenses: at least $28 million in repair costs and at least $19.5 million in salvage costs.

Baltimore leaders and business owners argue the ship’s owner and manager should be held responsible for their role in the disaster, which halted most maritime traffic through the Port of Baltimore and disrupted an important east coast trucking route.

Lawyers representing victims of the collapse and their families also have pledged to hold the companies accountable.

You’re gonna need a bigger number: Scientists consider a Category 6 for mega-hurricane era

A photograph taken from space shows the white swirl of a hurricane.

In 1973, the National Hurricane Center introduced the Saffir-Simpson scale, a five-category rating system that classified hurricanes by wind intensity.

At the bottom of the scale was Category 1, for storms with sustained winds of 74 to 95 mph. At the top was Category 5, for disasters with winds of 157 mph or more.

In the half-century since the scale’s debut, land and ocean temperatures have steadily risen as a result of greenhouse gas emissions. Hurricanes have become more intense, with stronger winds and heavier rainfall. This week a research team at the University of Pennsylvania led by climate scientist Michael Mann predicted that the North Atlantic will see an unprecedented 33 named tropical cyclones from June 1 to Nov. 30.

With catastrophic storms regularly blowing past the 157-mph threshold, some scientists argue, the Saffir-Simpson scale no longer adequately conveys the threat the biggest hurricanes present.

Climate & Environment

‘Rivers in the sky’ have drenched California, yet even more extreme rains are possible

Despite considerably back-to-back rainy winters in California, new research finds the region has seen much wetter years in the last 3,000 years. Experts worry that variability, coupled with climate change, could leave the state unprepared.

April 25, 2024

Earlier this year, two climate scientists published a paper that compared historical storm activity to a hypothetical version of the Saffir-Simpson scale that included a Category 6, for storms with sustained winds of 192 mph or more.

Of the 197 hurricanes classified as Category 5 from 1980 to 2021, five fit the description of a hypothetical Category 6 hurricane: Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, Hurricane Patricia in 2015, Typhoon Meranti in 2016, Typhoon Goni in 2020 and Typhoon Surigae in 2021.

Patricia, which made landfall near Jalisco, Mexico, in October 2015, is the most powerful tropical cyclone ever recorded in terms of maximum sustained winds. (While the paper looked at global storms, only storms in the Atlantic Ocean and the northern Pacific Ocean east of the International Date Line are officially ranked on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Other parts of the world use different classification systems.)

Though the storm had weakened to a Category 4 by the time it made landfall, its sustained winds over the Pacific Ocean hit 215 mph.

“That’s kind of incomprehensible,” said Michael F. Wehner , a senior scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and co-author of the Category 6 paper. “That’s faster than a racing car in a straightaway. It’s a new and dangerous world.”

In their paper, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Wehner and co-author James P. Kossin of the University of Wisconsin–Madison did not explicitly call for the adoption of a Category 6, primarily because the scale is quickly being supplanted by other measurement tools that more accurately gauge the hazard of a specific storm.

“The Saffir-Simpson scale is not all that good for warning the public of the impending danger of a storm,” Wehner said.

This artist's illustration depicts Voyager 1 entering interstellar space.

Science & Medicine

After months of silence, Voyager 1 has returned NASA’s calls

The spacecraft launched in 1977 and is now 15 billion miles from Earth. It went silent in November. Scientists at JPL figured out how to get it talking again.

April 23, 2024

The category scale measures only sustained wind speeds, which is just one of the threats a major storm presents. Of the 455 direct fatalities in the U.S. due to hurricanes from 2013 to 2023 — a figure that excludes deaths from 2017’s Hurricane Maria — less than 15% were caused by wind, National Hurricane Center director Mike Brennan said during a recent public meeting. The rest were caused by storm surges, flooding and rip tides.

The Saffir-Simpson scale is a relic of an earlier age in forecasting, Brennan said.

“Thirty years ago, that’s basically all we could tell you about a hurricane, is how strong it was right now. We couldn’t really tell you much about where it was going to go, or how strong it was going to be, or what the hazards were going to look like,” Brennan said during the meeting, which was organized by the American Meteorological Society. “We can tell people a lot more than that now.”

He confirmed the National Hurricane Center has no plans to introduce a Category 6, primarily because it is already trying “to not emphasize the scale very much,” Brennan said. Other meteorologists said that’s the right call.

“I don’t see the value in it at this time,” said Mark Bourassa , a meteorologist at Florida State University’s Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies. “There are other issues that could be better addressed, like the spatial extent of the storm and storm surge, that would convey more useful information [and] help with emergency management as well as individual people’s decisions.”

Simplistic as they are, Herbert Saffir and Robert Simpson’s categories are the first thing many people think of when they try to grasp the scale of a storm. In that sense, the scale’s persistence over the years helps people understand how much the climate has changed since its introduction.

“What the Saffir-Simpson scale is good for is quantifying, showing, that the most intense storms are becoming more intense because of climate change,” Wehner said. “It’s not like it used to be.”
