We had a unique experience in Wellsboro, Pa. with the covered wagon tour. They have two Belgian horses. Jim talked to thirty of us about the history of the PA. Grand Canyon. You can hike, bike, kayak, or fly fish. They have space for you to bring your horses so you can ride the trails. They will be open (May-Oct). They accept bus tours which they will have a cowboy cookout. They have a store for snacks. They have only ports-potty. Great guys and beautiful horses!

Excellent way to travel down the canyon, learn the history and enjoyable at the same time as you take in the beauty of the PA Grand Canyon!!

This is a fun option for touring the floor of the Pine Creek Gorge/Grand Canyon of PA. A pair of wonderful horses draw a large covered wagon with a driver and a tour guide who provides information on the history and nature of the area, as well as point out wildlife sightings. They have several pairs of horses, who take turns drawing the tours, and it was interesting to hear about how they get their horses and how they work together. Our guide was funny and engaging. We saw some blue herons and deer with fawns. The facility has a shop with souvenirs and seating area, plus port-a-potties available. The tour lasted two hours and we were invited to bring beverages and snacks as needed onto the wagon. Very enjoyable!

This is a must-do and a fabulous activity for the entire family! A very cool way to hear a lot of fun and interesting historical facts, see nature in action, and just be astounded in splendor of all the magnificent views. Do yourself a huge favor and buy the book that's available in the gift shop because you absolutely will not find it anywhere else. Jim was our tour guide - he was just as knowledgeable as he was wholesomely funny and engaging. I'm not "out-doorsy" but I can promise you that I've already looked into their horseback camping activity and the neighboring campgrounds, and I'm pricing kayaks and fishing gear! I'll never forget Jim or this tour

I knew when I got to the Grand Canyon of PA there was one thing I really wanted to do and that was a covered wagon tour, and it did not disappoint. The seats on the wagon were very comfy and the tour guide was a hoot. And yes the tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the area, which made the ride more interesting. And while you're there take a look at their gift shop, prices were reasonable. Thanks for the ride and taking our picture. Pamela Anderson

We went with the two little ones and we had a blast. The price is very reasonable and the ride is comfortable, even on not so comfortable weather days. The two cowboys who run the show are great. They put on a funny and very informative tour. They know how to work the crowd and the information about the creek they share is just great. We bought T-Shirts to comemorate the afternoon. We highly highly recommend!

Nice ride through nature. Our horses did a great job - Dan and Duke. Our guides were great - Stormy and Dan. Stormy was very knowledgeable and had a nice sense of humor. Stormy narrated on the way out and provided the history and nature commentary. Dan, the guide was no nonsense and provided lots of info about the horses and the wagon. We saw fawns, and female eagles. Took about 2 hours to make the round trip. Nice morning activity.

Everything about this experience was wonderful. We were warmly greeted upon our arrival. There were port-o-potty's available to use prior to departing on our 2-hour wagon ride and a friendly little welcome area with souvenirs, beverages, snacks and seating. The scenery was incredible and the wagon ride was smooth and comfortable. They have cushion provided on the seats and the covered part of the wagon provides shade on hot days. They let you know in advance that it may be cooler in the canyon but they also provide a few blankets if you find yourself unprepared. This is a family run business with several generations involved. They know the area well and provide a great overview of the area, history of the canyon, knowledge of the horses and wagon. The price is excellent for the experience. This is a fantastic way to experience the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon and enjoy the scenery for people of all ages!

Ole Covered Wagon Tour: A Step Back in Time

  • by LaKeshia Knarr
  • July 31, 2018

Looking for something unique to do in the Pennsylvania Wilds this summer?

Well, look no further.

Last year for my birthday, my husband and I were excited to find the Ole Covered Wagon Tours offered in the Pine Creek Gorge, a.k.a. the PA Grand Canyon.

ole covered wagon tours

The tours depart about 11 miles from Wellsboro and travel down the Pine Creek Rail Trail, a level surface perfect for such an outing.

Watching the horse-drawn wagons, specially designed with comfortable seating for the trips, trot down the path really does take you back to a time long gone.

The tours are provided by  Ole Covered Wagon Tours , a family-owned business located in Tioga County.  The guides offer details about the history of the valley and provide fun facts along the journey, helping you to imagine the gorge long before the existing rail trail was built. You see fragments of that history: an old stone mile marker used when the trains were operating or a memorial to the Civilian Conservation Corps.

We went on the Summer Waterfall Ride, which took us to the foot of the Turkey Trail. The steep trail begins at Leonard Harrison State Park, adjacent to the popular vista. I’d been down the top portion of the trail; however, this was my first time getting up close to the beautiful waterfalls near the end of the trail. The hike took some energy, but was welcomed, as it was a warm day and the trail takes you up under the trees and into cool shade.

ole covered wagon tours

Blooming flowers lined the Rail Trail in a way that made another rider comment, “it looks as though someone came out here and just dumped a bunch of seeds,” and wildlife made itself known. A small turtle crossed the path, bringing our wagon to a halt at one point, and we also saw blue heron, Canada geese, and various other birds along the creek.

We love taking tours when we travel (ghost tours, port tours, walking tours… you name it), so we were pretty excited to find one that showcased many elements of the area so beautifully. It was a relaxing four-hour journey and, overall, a great way to spend the day.

Next time you’re exploring the Pine Creek Valley & PA Grand Canyon of the Pennsylvania Wilds, consider taking a step back in time to experience your very own covered wagon expedition.
