HOVER MOUSE TO PAUSE

Four trips - all outstanding

"I've now done four hunting trips with Andrew and all have been outstanding. Three of them were with my teenage sons for their 1st hunts so safety was absolutely paramount. For the 1st timers, he will take you to the rifle range for a familiarity and safety lesson and fire a few shots at targets.

Andrew has access to a few private wilderness blocks where no one else will be hunting. These blocks have ridiculous amounts of Red and Fallow deer and we have always seen deer inside 30 minutes. Sneaking up on them will have your heart pounding out of your chest and you may spook the odd one, but that won't matter as you go over the next ridge and you'll be onto another in no time.

The last 2-day hunt we shot 5 deer( for 5 bullets, all meat animals but we have seen some awesome 12 and 14 point Stags in there too. Andrew field dresses them for you and at the end of the hunt organises the butchering as well. I can't recommend him enough."

North & South Island Wildside Hunting Safaris

Hunt description, north island wildside hunting safaris.

Within a short walking distance of Wildside’s homestead is some the North Island’s most outstanding trophy hunting ever to be experienced.

On Wildside’s exclusive hunting properties you will find, roaming in their natural heards and habitat:

Huge Red Stags;

Sika Stags;

Rusa Stags;

Fallow Bucks.

A habitat that is perfectly suited for the thrilling “spot and stalk” hunting for which Wildside Hunting Safaris is world renown.

Not only for some of New Zealand’s finest Red Stags and Fallow Bucks but also for trophy species found ONLY on the North Island like the seriously intelligent Sika Stag and the secretive Sambar and Rusa Stags.

North Island hunting is typically conducted on easy rolling to hilly bush country where “up close encounters” are experienced by the “spot and stalk” method of hunting. Usually offering at least one shot opportunity per day (for the bow or rifle) and is ideally for the hunter who wants to have the “thrill of the stalk” as well as taking the trophy of a lifetime.

South Island Wildside Hunting Safaris

Wildside’s South Island properties are mainly on the Eastern side of the main divide where the foothills are less steep and more manageable for foot hunting Tahr.

Along with over 1M acres of public land with exceptional numbers, on the South Island we offer hunts for:

Wildside Hunting Safaris can take you on the hunt of a lifetime for all New Zealand’s trophy animals.

Wildside’s properties are often equipped for “still hunting” with treestands, platforms and ground blinds where wild game can be observed for most of the day.

What ever your ambition or abilities are the professional team at Wildside Hunting Safaris can help make your hunting dreams become reality.

The hunting season gets underway in March and goes right through until August when the stags begin shedding their antlers.

The rut period for the Red, Fallow and Sika is in our autumn (fall) with the Red Stags starting first in early March and then the Fallow and Sika follow at late March early April. Peak of the rut is around the first to second weeks of April when the “Roar” is at fever pitch.

All three species are very vocal and often respond to imitation roars. For the Sambar and Rusa their rut is around July-August and make for a very interesting midwinter hunt. On the South Island the Tahr and Chamois rut is from May to July with the Tahr being one of the spectacular animals to hunt in New Zealand. Wildside has over 100,000 acres of freerange private land hunting for tahr that is well populated with large mobs that boast some great bulls.

Red Stag hunts start from $5,500 (each hunter) for two hunters with one guide. This includes 4 days guiding, accommodation/food and beverages and a stag up to 350SCI” for each hunter, also transport to and from the nearest airport. Up grades on stags are totally possible and will be priced according to Wildside’s list price (supplied on request) , also extra days can be added at an extra cost.

Other species that are available are as follows including time of year to hunt them:

Fallow (February to September) ,

Sika (February to September) ,

Sambar (June to October),

Rusa (June to October) ,

Elk (February to September) ,

Tahr (all year round but best from May to September) ,

Chamois (all year round but best from May to September)

Tahr hunts start from $5,500 (each hunter) for two hunters with one guide. This includes 3 days guiding, a bull tahr for each hunter (best we can find) , accommodation/food and beverages also transport from the nearest airport.

Bowhunting can obviously take a little more time than rifle hunting so consider hunting for more days when booking your hunt.

All prices are in USD

BLUE DUCK STATION HUNTING

Hunting for conservation.

New Zealand’s only native land mammals are pekapeka or the short tailed and the long tailed bat. Humans have introduced all the other land mammals that now call New Zealand home. As these mammals are introduced there are often no predators, add in mild winters and an abundance of food resulting in unsustainable high numbers. Hunting plays an important part of controlling numbers so that our native flora and fauna are not destroyed.

At Blue Duck Station we believe in utilising the whole animal that we have hunted. We feed ourselves and our dogs and service our small mammal traps with the animal. Nothing is wasted and we know our meat is free range, fresh and organic.  Our knowledgeable guides will ensure you have a fantastic learning experience in our remote NZ bush.

Uncontrolled deer numbers can be detrimental for the forest. Problems include lack of regeneration, cleared undergrowth, trampled ground cover, compacted subsoils, exposed tree roots and stripped bark.

We offer guided hunting for both red and fallow deer; the first hunt here is always guided, repeat guests to our lodges are welcome to hunt without a guide by prearrangement and provided they have a valid New Zealand firearms licence. Please ensure that you book early for the roar.

Prices: $295 for a guided hunt or $500 full day (maximum 2 people per guide). Red deer: $500 for a meat deer or spiker. 8 pointers are $800 plus $100 for every additional point. Fallow deer: $250, for a meat deer or spiker. Stags are priced from $800 depending on the head.

Goats are browsers and will eat a wide range of plant material including shrubs, trees, grasses and weeds. They are also agile and can accelerate erosion and push holes in fences. Goats are in abundance on the station and hunting them with a guide is the perfect introduction to larger game for the inexperienced hunter or young fella who wants to learn stalking and bush skills.

Prices: $175 per person for a guided hunt (minimum two people – includes the animal)

Rabbits and hares are primarily an agricultural pest, competing with livestock for pasture and causing extensive damage to erosion prone soil to the point that land can be rendered useless. They can also cause damage to vulnerable native plant communities. Small game are the ideal introduction to shooting and processing your own meat.

Price: $120 per person including all animals

small_game_hunting

Feral pigs can cause long term impacts to the ecosystem, compete for food with native animals, can cause damage to kiwi feeding areas and they also kill lambs and cast sheep. Our pig hunting  includes a guide, ATV transport and experienced pig dogs.

Prices: $595 per guided hunt for up to two people (including the animal)

When to Visit for Deer Hunting in NZ

The best time of year for deer hunting in NZ is early spring, when the deer shed their winter coats and the days are starting to get longer.

There are also a few other factors that can make deer hunting in NZ even more enjoyable, such as the fact that the deer are more active during this time of year and they are also easier to spot as they move around in search of food.

So if you’re looking for a great opportunity to deer hunt, make sure to book your guided hunt in early spring.

Take in the scenic vistas of the central North Island while stalking your prey. Finish the day off at basecamp, beer in hand!

Yes, we have helicopter transfers available from anywhere in NZ but can also arrange vehicle transfers from Auckland International or Taupo domestic terminals. Our hunting and fishing guided tours have helicopter options to them, with our hunting grounds being either a 90 minute drive or a 25 minute flight from Taupo CBD.

There’s a list! Although we provide all firearms, food and transport to and from the hunting ground (on our one day tours). We do not provide a firearms licence. By NZ law, visiting hunters bringing their own firearms must obtain a firearms tourist licence from the NZ police at the International airport on their arrival. Glenora (today known as Ora) was the out Station of Akitio Station back in the early years & comprised of 90,000ac. It was purchased by Francis Armstrong in 1876, and has been handed down through the generations since then. It used to be known as one of the great Stations in the Wairarapa, North Island of New Zealand. Glenora is now down to 6,700ac & still remains in the Armstrong family today, which is managed by Professional New Zealand hunters Hamish & Pamela Armstrong, son & daughter in law, Tim & Frecks Armstrong along with their 3 children, Michaela, Hamish & Thomas.

Farmers have had to diversify where possible over the past years, & this is where the idea came about to start a New Zealand hunting safari park.

Wild pigs and trophy Boars inhabit our Red Stag properties.

Trophy Boar hunting, wild pigs.

Wild pigs inhabit our red stag properties in low numbers and are generally regarded by landowners as pests. There for if wild pigs are encountered on any of our hunts they can be shot for no cost. However if you wish to target a trophy boar a trophy fee does apply. To really hunt successfully for trophy boars in New Zealand you need a team of dogs. We do not have pig dogs at Lake Hawea Hunting Safaris but we can contract professional pig hunters to help you take a trophy boar.

Trophy boar hunting makes for a great day of hunting and when the time comes it’s up to you whether you want to opt for your rifle or knife.

Boar Trophies

Trophies are best available; boars generally carry good tusks and can weigh up to and in excess of 200 pounds. Boars are a range of colours, black or tan being common colours and many boars are a mix of both.

Outstanding! Matt was an excellent guide with very in depth knowledge of the area and hunting in general. He was very professional and an excellent teacher when it came to showing a few of the lesser experienced lads how to stalk, dispatch and gut our kills.

Me and the boys can't stop talking about how much we enjoyed our trip and can't wait to start planning another one with the guys from Total Safaris NZ.

At Poronui Hunting we want to make your New Zealand hunting trip as memorable and as easy as possible. And if you’re looking to hunt for a red stag trophy ,  you’ve come to the right place!

It’s important you have the right clothing and equipment for the climate and the hunting terrain in New Zealand. The weather can change suddenly, especially in the forest or at high elevation, so you need to be prepared. Four seasons in one day is a phrase that could have been coined to describe New Zealand, and, remember, the seasons are opposite those of the northern hemisphere.

New Zealand is a small mountainous country, and our climate is heavily influenced by maritime conditions. As a result, weather conditions can fluctuate significantly at any time of the year, and it pays to be prepared.

The terrain can be challenging and a good level of fitness is recommended, especially when stalking a stag over a couple of days. You’ll be traversing hillsides, dropping over mountains, and creeping through streams and gorges in search of your trophy stag.

pig hunting trips nz north island

Different species of deer can be found in hard antler practically all-year round in New Zealand. The main hunting season is between late February and the beginning of August when red stag, sika, and fallow deer are in hard antler. The rut commences mid-March for red stags, followed a month later for sika, fallow, and then rusa.

pig hunting trips nz north island

Chamois and tahr are both available in their summer coats down at Glazebrook during this time.

pig hunting trips nz north island

The start of the hunting season. Red and sika stags are in hard antler by the third week. A great time to look over plenty of stags in the open country and pick a really big trophy that is in good shape before the rigors of the rut.

pig hunting trips nz north island

Big monster. Early in the month the sika stags are in the open before they head to the bush before the rut. Mid-March it's all on for the red stags with the rut reaching its peak in late March and early April.

pig hunting trips nz north island

As the rut of the reds begins to tail off, the sika are really hitting their straps, usually towards the end of the second week. As if this isn't enough, fallow bucks will make themselves heard before the end of the month.

pig hunting trips nz north island

The red stags move away from the hinds during May in preparation for the winter. In the South Island the chamois and tahr coats are in their prime. The tahr commence their rut and bulls are generally higher in the mountains with groups of nannies.

pig hunting trips nz north island

In the South Island the chamois and tahr coats are still in their prime. Towards the end of June, expect to see stags out in the open in bachelor groups as they try to pile on condition.

pig hunting trips nz north island

July is a very good month to pick out a sika or red stag trophy. It's amazing what wanders out from the bush now that they have lost interest in females! Tahr and chamois coats are superb, though by now they will leave the nannies and start congretating in bachelor groups. In July, rusa stags will be making the odd grunt or two as they practice for the rut.

pig hunting trips nz north island

Last chance for a big red stag as the antlers will start dropping by the second week of the month. The smaller stags will not shed until September but the really big boys are a couple of weeks earlier. The rusa have come out of the woodwork and are grunting up a storm.

pig hunting trips nz north island

There are still great opportunities for chamois, tahr, and rusa.

pig hunting trips nz north island

Probably the last really good month for tahr and chamois, as their coats are climate-dependent and will start to change in the coming months. Rusa and sambar are still available, and, if fishing is on the program, the new season gets underway 1 October.

pig hunting trips nz north island

Rusa are the main trophy option in November. The spring growth drags the stags out onto the grass as they recover condition after the rut. It's also a popular time for a spring meat hunt.

pig hunting trips nz north island

Rusa and a spring meat hunt are the pre-Christmas highlights. It's possible to get chamois and tahr in their summer coats.

pig hunting trips nz north island

  • A good wind-proof, water-proof shell layer is essential at any time.
  • Layering for the conditions is preferable to wearing a heavily insulated coat, as, even in the middle of winter, a warm day would make this unbearable on the hill. This allows you to be comfortable during the chill of an early morning frost and then strip a layer or two off later as temperatures rise.
  • Camouflage-patterned clothing is an advantage but not essential, though colors need to be dull greens, browns, or olive if camouflage isn’t worn.
  • Solid footwear is important. Boots with good ankle support and a firm sole with good grip are very important, particularly in the steeper conditions found in the South Island.
  • Most New Zealand hunting is spot and stalk. Good binoculars are essential for spotting animals, with 10*40s ideal.
  • A spotting scope is ideal for judging trophies from a distance.

pig hunting trips nz north island

We work with some of the leading taxidermists in New Zealand, and can easily arrange to have your trophy mounted and sent to you back home. Taxidermy of a big stag usually costs around US$1,000. Subsequent animals are less.

pig hunting trips nz north island

If you prefer to expedite your trophy to your preferred taxidermist at home, we can help arrange this for you for an additional fee. The expediter will do the paperwork, pack the animal into the crate, and send it. Please note that meat can’t be exported to the United States.

pig hunting trips nz north island

We recommend flat shooting calibres, such as .300 Winchester magnum, which will cope with the range of species and terrain found in New Zealand. Visitors to New Zealand bringing firearms or ammunition must obtain a visitors firearms licence.

Licences can be obtained online. We recommend applying well in advance of your trip to ensure there are no issues. Note that if you intend to use a firearm and ammunition supplied by our lodges you will not require a visitor’s licence. In this instance you are under the active supervision of your guide and do not need an individual licence.

pig hunting trips nz north island

The New Zealand Government has introduced a new travel requirement for some visitors and transit passengers. It’s called the NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority), and travelers need to request theirs via the official mobile app or website. Approval can take up to 72 hours, so get yours before you go.

The NZeTA is required for travel from 1 October 2019.

Visit immigration.govt.nz/nzeta to find out if you need one.

Lower North Island pig hunting club comp

pig hunting trips nz north island

I was once again invited up to the North Island to help with judging this competition. Landing in Wellington on Friday the 19 th of October I had a number to call for Will and right on que he was waiting outside of the terminal in his Hilux with a dog box on the back ready to go hunting. Will had a side by side four wheeler which took us 11 km into the bush where we went for a walk but no luck on the pigs as they were not around. That afternoon I was dropped off at Charlotte and Keil Collins who were great hosts and next morning I was picked up by the president of their club Joel Peterson and taken out for another hunt into an area that Joel had lost two of his dogs thirteen days earlier. As soon as we got to the bush one of the dogs we had tracked off and just kept going so we kept following until the second dog tracked off after the first one. All the time we were expecting a bark as we kept on walking. Finally both dogs returned to us just proving how cunning these pigs are to catch. After we arrived back to Joel’s house he got a phone call from a tramper who had found one of his dogs in a step gully in Penn creek off the side of the Otaki River. When the tramper found this dog it was staying with the tracking collar and rip collar off the other dog so Joel got back one dog and both his tracking collars minus the other dog. Next morning of the competition Joel was back on the hill trying to find his other dog still with no luck.

pig hunting trips nz north island

With this competition last year I got to see how well these club members get on with each other and it was no different this year with a good turnout of club members helping out and once again they had so many prizes with all of the people entered taking home a prize with a big focus on the children section which I love seeing those big smiles on those kids faces..

pig hunting trips nz north island

The highlight of these comps are always seeing those boars rocking on up to the scales and this comp had a real ripper of a boar turn up weighing in at 239 pounds, caught by Gerry Veneberg and Ethan Oliver. Gerry has been hunting for many years and has a reputation as being a very good pig hunter and talking to a lot of the club members they talked very highly of him so it was well deserved getting such a good boar on the right weekend. Weighing this boar took a bit of lifting and when Epiha Johnson carried it across on his own to lower it on the hook the weight just straightened the hook out so we couldn’t even hang it up so the vice president of the club James Wineti went home and grabbed a 44 gallon drum to sit it on which made a good photo. That night a lot of the club members went around to James’s place for a BBQ and a few beers to give me a good send off. Thanks to Riana du Plessis for being the sober driver and to Shane Demenech for dropping me off at the wellington airport on the Monday morning for the trip back home. Thank you again Lower North Island Pig Hunting Club for arranging such a good trip away.
