We enjoyed the tour route for the most part, especially the parts that went through small villages and green areas. The forest parts were a bit dull but still nice riding. All or our guides were excellent. Our lunches were prepared with care, but I would comment that the lunch supplement was a bit expensive and we didn't think so much food was required for this meal. The accommodation was great and interesting. The towns we stopped in were great for exploring and we sometimes wished we had more time for this. Overall this is a great cycling trip and it was very enjoyable

Bikes: Good to excellent, saddle size was a downgrade. The large, padded saddles caused new friction where sitting wear points didn't exist. Unfortunately, bike companies refuse to standardize bike saddles so there is no solution for clients traveling too far to bring a saddle. Route: appreciate the tremendous work on routing . . . but it appeared as fair-weather routing. Spring rains turned many (most) miles of hard-packed dirt (with a bit of gravel) into mud, hectares of mud. (And in the water/mud, one cannot see the potholes.) We made a few ride-arounds after bogging down too often in the seasonal mud. We also rode around the silly segment to 'walk the bikes on the sand'. Recommend Eurobike recommend one free and one pay mapping routing service to clients to use with the GPX provided. Lodging: Strongly prefer lodging on the route and with local flavor vs corporate (holiday vs business traveler). Lagos - Hotel Tavoli had ants in the bathroom. Lodging at Albefera, Cerro da Marina was excessively off the route and in a heavily residential area. Luggage transfer: perfect.

We had a terrible experience with Exodus. We signed up for a "Self-Guided Cycling in the Douro Valley" several months in advance. Our detailed contacts were asked for by Exodus, but then never communicated to the actual operator. This meant that our agreed pick-up driver never showed up (he had incorrect information) and we had to fumble with international calls and roaming charges to contact a real person on a Saturday morning. Exodus could have offered us compensation on the spot for this ordeal. I wouldn't recommend their trips to anyone. Look around as Exodus charges a fortune.

Amazing tour!! - lots of different type of terrain.. gravel, sand, rocky, etc.. to test our abilities and to make an amazing and enjoyable tour! Our leader Mike was incredible- always attentive to our needs and kept the group together and safe. Our driver Paolo was always nearby and directing our way and took care of our delicious lunches!

Cycling Portugal - Porto to Lisbon

Our leaders were absolutely excellent! Marianna Picante and Michael Vanrapenbusch couldn't have been more helpful, patient and flexible. I do have 2 suggestions for the future.... -one of the ebikes wasn't working most of the trip, but Michael made every attempt to fix it. Maybe there should be an extra ebike on the van in case this happens in the future. -Michael was made to stay in hotels off site which was extra work for him. He worked just as hard on our trip as out leader Marianna did, and she was able to stay with us. -Maybe the trip should be rated more intermediate than moderate. There was days were the elevation was tough and long, and for people who aren't road cyclists it was extremely challenging. Otherwise no complaints, hotels were adequate, some nicer than others. The restaurant recommendations were good, the views spectacular, and the leaders simply the best!!

Just completed a fantastic 11 day guided cycling trip of Sardinia with ExperiencePlus! This was our second trip. Last year, we cycled through the Peloponnese with ExperiencePlus! Both of these experiences were fantastic. Great cycling, excellent hotels and food, fun and knowledgeable (and responsible) guides. Wonderful way to see some new sights, make new friends, and just not worry about the details!

Bike Across Portugal Plus! the Coast Tour

Bike Across Portugal Plus! the Coast

I have been on several Experience Plus bike tours. Every one has been well organized and delightful. This latest tour through southern and coastal Portugal was even a step above the previous tours I took, primarily because of the high quality of the three tour guides who took such good care of us. In addition, the members of the tour group quickly formed a supportive community displaying energy and humor and adding to the experience. All aspects of the tour were fine, and it left my wife and I with a wish that we could do the northern Portugal tour with Experience Plus next year.

Reviews of portugal bike tours.

Great ride, pedaling along the beach and through forests, many miles of which are bicycle path and board walk. The bicycle provided were perfect, lightweight, front suspension MTBs with provided large capacity handlebar bag. The ride was not overly taxing, although hillier as the days went on. The cafe stops were delightful. Historic and natural beauty surrounded us. Hotels and buffet breakfasts were perfect. The guide Alex a Portugal native was superb, corralling us as needed for safety, espousing on history, geography and such. We had a friendly group and a lovely time. Highly recommended.

Rolling hills & coastal views

Portugal bike tours.

Located in southwestern Europe, Portugal features over 528 miles (850 km) of pristine blue-water, sandy beaches and a sunny Mediterranean climate—the perfect atmosphere for cycling.

Lisbon boasts The Park of Nations, home to one of the largest estuaries in Europe, and is a smooth cycle ride. Pedal through Porto’s castles and sip world-famous Port wine of the River Douro.

The dedicated bike paths and side roads of the countryside have little traffic and allow cyclists to easily explore. Likewise, the rolling hills and quaint villages invite adventure and the stunning Algarve region boasts plentiful coastal views.

“The countryside was beautiful, with both challenging and gentle hills, and the people we met were friendly and helpful.”

Generally covering 50-80 km daily with an elevation gain of up to 1000m, these tours traverse enchanting landscapes and delightful villages, featuring a mix of flat and rolling terrains. They not only provide ample chances to stop and explore but also ensure a satisfying cycling workout.

Challenging bike tours are meant for experienced cyclists eager to push their limits. Spanning 80-120 km daily with an elevation gain of up to 2000m, these tours entail tackling steep ascents and demanding terrains. Though these tours require a high level of fitness and endurance, the exhilarating feeling of accomplishment at the end of each day, coupled with breathtaking views, makes the endeavor thoroughly rewarding.

We are devoted to discovering the ideal match for you. We collaborate with numerous lodging providers who meet our standards, although their availability may fluctuate, especially during peak demand times. Furthermore, we can customize your vacation to align with your preferences and budget, ensuring we identify the most fitting choice for your needs.

We advise booking your tour at the earliest opportunity, especially for popular tourist destinations with limited lodging availability. Prime choices often get snapped up for the summer before spring even arrives.

Addressing dietary preferences can vary based on their complexity. In Portugal, vegetarian options are generally available, but finding vegan meals might be more challenging in rural areas or smaller towns. Notably, lunch stops are often at traditional eateries which may not cater to special dietary needs beyond their standard menu. Keep this in consideration as you plan your adventure.

The ideal cycling season in Portugal stretches from mid-April to mid-October. In elevated regions like the Serra da Estrela, it’s preferable to cycle from mid-May to September.

Tours in Portugal can continue in light rain with the appropriate clothing. Summer frequently witnesses afternoon thunderstorms, making early tour starts recommended. If challenging weather conditions are expected, we’ll strive to adjust the tour beforehand.

Cycling Terrain and Bike Suitability

The tour is primarily on quiet roads with a small number of joining sections on busier roads. Some cycling in towns and cities is necessary, particularly at the start and end of the day. Roads are generally well surfaced and suitable for road bike tires of 25 mm or more. We recommend a good quality and well-fitted road bike with dropped handlebars. If bringing your bike in a box, we can remove it and return it to you at the end of the tour.

Accommodation in Portugal

On the N2 Portugal End to End bike tour you will stay in comfortable, clean and good quality hotels. Bike storage will be available. Some hotels have restaurants. We have personally selected (and usually stayed in!) all the hotels we use. You will enjoy a fantastic breakfast each morning to fuel you for the day.

Your luggage will be transferred each day. Our support van will be there in a jiffy if you need any assistance during the day.

Lunch, Snacks and Refreshments

There is a lot of choice when it comes to stopping off for lunch in local cafés and restaurants. Lunch and evening meals are not included in the price. On occasions you may choose to have an evening meal together with the group, or you are free to stroll around and explore the local cuisine which Portugal is known for!

Water, fruit, bars and snacks are available without limit each day from the support van. Just help yourself.

Arriving for Your Portugal N2 Cycle Tour

The tour starts in the beautiful and historical town of Chaves on the first date of the advertised tour with a detailed briefing. Flying to Porto is your best option. Direct flights to Porto are very reasonably priced from most UK cities (2 hr 30 mins approx) and elsewhere. We then prepare our bikes and spend the night in the our hotel. This first night is included in the price of the tour. Please contact us if you have other travel requirements you wish to discuss and we will do our best to assist!

Departure Planning

The tour finishes in Quarteira where we spend a final night in our chosen hotel.  From here you can arrange your onward travels. We can provide transfers from our finish point to Faro Airport. You can fly to many UK cities (approx 2 hr 45 mins).

What to Expect on Your N2 Cycle Tour of Portugal

Our N2 tours run in late spring and autumn (fall). These are the best seasons for cycling in Portugal. Of course the weather will vary between the north and the coastal south.

From March to May, the country is in bloom and waking after the winter. In May you can expect daytime temperatures between 17 C and 24 C. May is generally a sunny month with low rainfall. Of course the weather will vary between the north and the coastal south.

From September to October the sun is still shining, the weather is warm, and many of the crowds have dispersed. In September you can expect temperatures between 19 C and 29 C. September is generally a sunny month with low rainfall.

Group Size and Tour Leaders

Our groups are generally around 12 to 18 people. All our Portugal tours go ahead with a minimum of six people.

Our groups are supported by a tour leader and assistant, both of whom have previous tour support experience and are themselves cyclists who fully appreciate just how it feels however your day pans out. The tour leader and assistant ride in the van to better aid a speedy assist where required. On most tours we also have a rider on the road with basic mechanical and first aid skills who will try to ride ‘mid-pack’, but the van generally gets there first.

At the initial briefing all cyclists are provided with the tour leader and assistant’s number, as well as that of the emergency services which they are instructed to use in the event of an emergency.

English is fairly widely spoken in the larger towns in Portugal and where possible we will have Portugese speakers available to assist.

Camaraderie

Camaraderie forms a big part of the whole experience our tours provide and although single supplements are available, our tours are priced and catered for such that a single cyclist can feel comfortable making a booking and opt to share a twin room with someone they don’t know.

People tend to settle into their own way of cycling throughout the day and groups can vary from day to day and evening to evening. You can cycle at your own pace for a solitary cycle or join others.

Navigating the Portugal N2 Cycle Route

We recommend you bring a bike computer onto which you can upload the GPX files of the route. GPX files of the Portugal N2 route will be emailed to you before the start of the tour.

We will also email route profile sheets to help with finding your way.

Direction of Travel

We travel north to south. The prevailing wind is westerly.

Bike Maintenance

Each morning (and evening) bike cleaning materials, basic tools, pumps and lubricants will be available so you can groom your trusty steeds.

You can telephone any time for mechanical support where required.

Mechanical Issues

With regards to mechanical issues it’s helpful if everyone knows how to repair a puncture or replace a tube. However, we are on call if you need help re-seating a stiff tyre on the rim.

Minor mechanicals can be dealt with roadside and where more specialist help is required we can transport you and your bike to a local bike shop to carry out repairs.

Support Van & Cyclist

Our support van with water and refreshments will pass you at least once each morning and afternoon en route to lunch and hotel so you will normally be able to access your day pack before lunch, at lunch and in the afternoon.

We usually have a Support Cyclist on the road as well.

In the afternoon we ensure we get your bag to the hotel before you arrive.

Daily Routine

Every day starts with a hearty breakfast and a briefing.

Breakfasts vary but for the most part will include cereals, fruit, eggs in various guises, cheeses, meats and breads with coffee, juice and tea.

We’ll advise of a suitable morning coffee stop for ‘second breakfast’ and we’ll also specify a lunch stop where the van can be found. Sometimes there will be a choice of restaurant but in remote areas there may only be one suitable.

Evening meals are available in some of our Portugal hotels. We do however advise a little walk each evening just to sample the delights these towns have to offer.

What People Are Saying

Southern Atlantic coast and Algarve, Portugal Four intrepid bikers completed the 8 day tour just ahead of covid-19 March 20, 2020. Lisbon and the coastal bike route were grand, as described. Maps could have been better quality. Two GPS supplied with route loaded, finding the correct route in towns and leaving villages was a challenge. Lodgings and restaurants very nice, some staying open when we were the only guests. Sergio, Enrique and Diego, and Tripsite were extremely helpful daily! Thanks. We are home now, finished with the virus quarantine, well and ready to create a photo log of the trip. Hope to return to see the northern coast soon. ... Read more Sally , USA ,
Sergio arranged a really great 5 day (6 nights) tour for me with breathtaking views of Douro valley, interesting and challenging off roads, quite and tranquil back countries, and comfortable and quaint accommodations to relax in at the end of each day. Sergio took great care of us (there were another couple whose tour dates were the same as mine), checked from time to time to see how we are doing, any questions or problems we might have, and shared with us much information on the local culture. His other staff are also great, friendly and knowledgeable about their city. Sergio arranged for a free walking tour of Porto as part of the package, and when we were at Pinhao he took us to a vineyard for port wine tasting. We were equipped with GPS with turn by turn instructions, no way to get lost. Douro valley is a beautiful and serene place to cycle, sometimes you feel like you have the whole place just to yourself. The villages and towns along the way are not touristy at all, very much maintained its local way of life. A great way to see beautiful nature and way of life in the wine country of Portugal. Really recommend a visit to the archeological site of Foz Coa to see the rock art our ancestor left us over 20,000 years ago and hear about the fascinating history of how it was discovered and the fight to preserve an important part of human heritage. Miss the nature, the sun and tranquility of Douro wine valley. Fold'n and Visit is the company to go with when you want to book tours in Porto or the countryside around it. Really recommend it for their service, care, attention to details and hospitality. ... Read more Wagabonne , Beijing, China ,

Have a question?

A bike tour in Alentejo is like stepping into the past, where rolling countryside, olive groves, vineyards, and cork trees reign supreme.

Experience the quiet charm of cycling through the Alentejo region of Portugal as you discover an old-world way of life. It's the heartland of the world's cork production, still harvested by hand at the same steady pace that's been followed for generations. Unpack and unwind at one luxurious hotel for your entire bike tour, ensuring relaxation at the end of each day. Savor slow food cuisine, exquisite local wines, and cycle to historic towns like UNESCO-listed Évora, with its ancient Roman temples, city walls, and bath ruins. Here, time seems to pause, and the hustle and bustle of everyday life are long forgotten.

The dining experiences were amazing. The vineyard tour and dinner on the last night was unforgettable, gorgeous and so special. I felt so privileged to spend the evening there.

Every meal out as a group was well thought out and enhanced our experience, from the opening dinner in town with local wine and food to the final closing. The lunch in Elvas with the incredible view was fabulous, with well selected food. The dinner in Estremoz was incredible, with the highest quality food and presentation. And the final closing dinner with wine tour, bit of cooking on the estate, and seating at the most elaborate table with wonderful service was a lovely closing touch.

Candace, Trek Travel Guest

Both the tour of Evora and the tour of the cork estate were wonderful. The history of the region was central to the enjoyment and awe of the spaces we visited. Meeting and enjoying the people of the region enriched our time there.

Additional Arrival Information

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the trip start, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS). Public transportation is inexpensive and easy to use from the airport. You can take the Metro with a one-way ticket for 1.90€ or the daily pass (which allows you to use the metro, bus, trams, and trains) for 6€. More information can be found at www.metro.transporteslisboa.pt . Alternatively, taxis are plentiful and cost approximately 15-25 Euros to Lisbon center.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at the bakery A Padaria Portuguesa (Rua Mouzinho da Silveira 2, 1250-042 Lisbon) at 10:00 AM on the first day of the trip. You'll then shuttle approximately two hours to your retreat oasis for the week. Please have your first-day cycling clothes and riding gear easily accessible, separate from your luggage. After a light lunch of local delights on the patio of the hotel, your guides will fit and familiarize you with your bike for the week and speak to the specifics of cycling in the area before taking to the roads of Alentejo.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Alentejo Marmoris Hotel and Spa (+351 268 887 010), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. A taxi from Lisbon to the first hotel will take about two hours and cost around 200 euros.

Additional Departure Information

You will say farewell to your guides at 11:00 AM at the Alentejo Marmoris Hotel and Spa in Vila Viçosa, Portugal. You will shuttle approximately two hours to the Lisbon Portela Airport to arrive around 1:00 PM. Please do not schedule a flight out before 2:30 PM on the last day of the trip to allow plenty of time for any unforeseen delays. If you are staying in Lisbon, the shuttle will also stop in the centre of the town at A Padaria Portuguesa (Rua Mouzinho da Silveira 2, 1250-042 Lisbon).

Before and After Your Trip

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, known as the city of seven hills, is the capital city of Portugal overflowing with great café culture, music, art, and gratuitous history. You'll be enchanted by the narrow, cobbled streets and white washed walls, ochre roofs, and colourful splashes of ceramic tiles. Be sure to walk the streets of some of the many storied neighbourhoods and certainly don't pass up a pastéis de nata, Portugal's mouthwatering custard tart. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre- and post-trip hotel:

Mornings and evenings in fall can be cooler so make sure to pack layers. Rain is infrequent but there is always a chance for a shower so don’t forget your rain gear to assure you comfort while riding. View our Packing List

Top 20 Bike Rides and Cycling Routes in Portugal

Cycling in portugal.

Whether you’re looking for afternoon jaunts or wish to explore the country on a profound level, cycling in Portugal offers fantastic routes, blissful sights and fascinating landscapes. With a lengthy Atlantic coastline and two offshore archipelagos, bike rides will often provide you with astounding sea views and ample toe-dipping opportunities.

Cycle routes in Portugal have even more to offer than a beautiful, wild coastline though. With an amazingly large variety of landscapes, you can ride past rugged mountains and through glacial valleys, see rare Mediterranean forests and stop in remote villages for pasteis de nata, Portugal’s famous custard tart.

Flat, coastal cycle paths are plentiful and perfect for families as well as soloists. Many sections of coast include forest hills, rewarding your climb with exceptional views. Multi-day routes are also a wonderful choice and no two days will be the same. With a warm, maritime and Mediterranean climate, you can cycle year round.

A varied country where every inch is worthy of exploration, choosing cycle routes in Portugal can be tricky. What better way to settle on a location than its designated nature parks? There are seven in total, with a further national park, Peneda-Gerês. You’ll find Gerês in the far north, bordering Spain, and there’s a fair chance that you’ll fall heavily in love with its lush vegetation, staggering views and crashing waterfalls. Try to glimpse the wolves that roam here.

If you’re based in or near Lisbon, you can head out to Sintra-Cascais Natural Park on the coast. Cycling in Portugal hardly gets better than this, with the UNESCO World Heritage town, Sintra, begging to be explored before you ride into the park proper. Days here are often strenuous, with challenging climbs. Dirt, gravel and asphalt trails can be found here.

Islands and archipelagos

While the mainland has a lifetime’s worth of cycle paths and trails, if you find yourself in one of the archipelagos, two-wheeled adventures are equally wonderful. Bike rides in Portugal’s island chains can be dramatically different, from Madeira’s tough, volcano switchbacks to the hydrangea-lined lanes of Sao Miguel in the Azores.

All with volcanic foundations, cycling is typically hilly in Portugal’s islands but the incredible views and culture make the thigh-burn worth it. Stop at volcanic lakes, try Azorean cheeses and ride the desert landscape of Porto Santo.

You can fly or ferry your bike from the mainland to the islands or to make things easy, rent one out there. Hundreds of miles into the Atlantic, Portugal’s islands have an isolated yet welcoming feel.

Pedaling from January to December

Mainland Portugal provides year-round cycling conditions and there’s always somewhere sporting the perfect weather. In the heat of the summer, when the south can be exhaustingly hot, head up north to Gerês, the mountains or even over to Sintra-Cascais with its cooler microclimate.

In winter, pedal down south to the jaw-dropping beauty of the Algarve coast with its endless tracks, back lanes and paths. You’ll find gloriously warm temperatures and near-deserted trails.

The archipelagos never get too cold but the Azores experience significant rainfall throughout the year while Madeira has wet winters. That’s why these wonderful islands are so unbelievably green.

Today you will cycle on calm and serene roads, with fresh ocean breezes and sea views. On the way, you will cross several small beaches, such as Valadares, Francelos and Miramar, by cycling on a path near the coastline. Although the water might be too cold for some, these beaches are a great spot to take a dip and enjoy the sun (if the weather conditions allow it!) Miramar Beach is especially worth a stop to visit the little chapel that sits on the top of some rocks by the shore; the famous Capela do Senhor da Pedra.

The tile factory is an example of where you will see ceramics and tiles with typical paintings, such as arrastão or moliceiro boats, beaches, fishermen, and sardines, to name a few. On the way and in the area of Ovar, there is the church of Santa Maria de Válega, known for its beautiful, brightly colored tiles on the facade; it truly is a must see. As you head on, you will arrive at a dock in which you can view the harbor and some old codfish boats. After, you will cross the main bridge and arrive in Barra Village. From here, you will head south on the bicycle path, which avoids the open road and traffic. As you arrive to the end of it, the landscape will begin to change into small fields and vegetable gardens, right up until Mira Beach.

First I’d like to say that we had a wonderful trip. All the hotels were great and much of the cycling was very enjoyable. The local agents in Porto were extremely nice and helpful. The loop ride in Furadouro was slightly more challenging than we were prepared for. The restaurants were all fantastic and overall a very enjoyable trip.

Cycling the Portuguese Way: A Guide to the Coastal Camino de Santiago

If you are planning to ride the Camino de Santiago, you should consider cycling the Portuguese Way, starting from Porto towards Santiago de Compostela. This variation of the way of St. James - one of our most participated Portugal Bike Tours -  is growing in popularity, but still offers one of the most authentic ways to experience this pilgrimage, with the added bonus of visiting two countries (starting in Portugal and ending in Spain) and that it takes less time to complete than the original Camino.

In this article, we've tapped into our knowledge from operating our  bike tour in the Portuguese Way to Santiago to share why, how, when and what to expect on your daily rides as you go from Porto to Santiago de Compostela.  Check this guide that showcases the best to make the most of your bike tour in Portugal and Spain.

Why choose cycling the Portuguese Way?

You’ll find a great climate, rich history and culture, world-renowned gastronomy, a true variety of trails and cycling paths as well as beautiful coastal and rural landscapes.

Great cycling climate all year long

This coastal area is facing the north Atlantic Ocean, and thus has a maritime climate, with an average annual temperature of 16°C and plenty of sunny days throughout the year, making it perfect for cycling. During the winter months of December to March you’ll still find moderate temperatures but also higher rainfall. August is usually the warmest month and temperatures tend to be agreeable to ride only in the morning.

Rich history and culture, full of significance

The Way of St. James started out with the legend of the burial of the remains of Saint James, brought over by boat from Jerusalem, in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, in what is now Santiago de Compostela.

The pilgrimage to the Saint’s shrine began as early as the 9th Century and was very popular in Christian Europe throughout the medieval ages as a way to pay homage to Saint James, to earn indulgences and also sometimes as penance for sins committed. Legend also says that in 1325, the Portuguese Queen Isabel made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, following a route very similar to the one that today is marked with yellow arrows and started a tradition of what is known today as the Portuguese Way of St. James; In this days, besides religious reasons, many pilgrims walk, cycle or horseback ride the Way, for sport, to travel and get to know the regions and also as a way to find some spiritual retreat from our busy and stressful city lives.

Parallel to the significance of the Way of St. James there’s also the rich history of northern Portugal and Galicia, once part of the same kingdom right until the Portuguese independence in the 12th century. The common history of these bordering regions is still visible in the similarities you find today, even after more than 700 years of “separation”.

One of the main things you’ll notice while riding along the Portuguese Way to Santiago are  the common traces of the Romanesque architecture in the myriad of churches, manor houses and old bridges you’ll pass and most likely stop to admire or take a photo of.

bike tour Portuguese way bike paths along the Atlantic coast

World renowned gastronomy

What is more important after having a tough and exhausting ride during the day than to enjoy a delicious meal paired with great wine? In this aspect, both Portugal and Spain have delicious food, with a variety of fresh fish and seafood, so good to enjoy sitting outside in warm days, paired with the local chilled green wine. Easy to find is the hearty comfort food that you’ll be able to enjoy near the fireplace, with a glass of full-bodied red wine from the neighbouring regions of the Douro and La Rioja.

Being bathed by the Atlantic ocean means both countries thrive on fantastic, fresh fish and seafood, expertly used in their trademark Mediterranean cuisine. But both countries have great variety of cultures, climate variation and landscapes, which means each region has also an endless variety of nourishing stews, grilled and oven-baked meats, cheese, wines and local specialities. From Michelin star restaurants to regional “tascas” and “tapas” places, you’ll find yourself in a foodie’s heaven.

Beautiful cities and rural landscape

One of the enchants of riding the Way’s Coastal Path is of course to experience the first days of coastal views and flat bike paths by the beach, that will take you along the northern coast of the peninsula, riding through seaside towns facing the ocean. The scenery will change after the 3 rd day and you’ll be amazed by the ease with which you’ll be able to immerse in bucolic rural and forest landscape that you’ll find at such a short distance from the coast. Riding the Portuguese Way means you’ll be able to rest in, visit and explore, exciting ancient cities with beautiful architecture from all eras that will make your travel so worthwhile. Deserving a special mention are places like the starting city of Porto, a sparkling jewel sprawling to the hills of the north bank of the Douro River, going all the way to the river mouth, and with its traditional buildings of dark granite stone, facades of bright colours, topped with red tile roofs. Already in Spain you won’t forget your visit to the cities of Pontevedra with the charming pedestrian centre area, where you’ll enjoy walking the medieval streets and buildings that surround the magnificent cathedral, a focal point for the pilgrims of the Way, but definitely not the only one, as you’ll find out by yourself, passing by the myriad of great restaurants with outside sitting areas that will enable you to live this city like the locals like to. Santiago de Compostela as your final destination is in itself a spectacular place to walk around and visit. The magnificent Cathedral dominates the central square and the medieval streets spread all the way to the old city walls.

Great backroads, trails and a marked path of great variety

You’ll be amazed at the variety of roads, paths and trails that you’ll ride on your way to Santiago de Compostela. Every day you’ll find yourself riding in such diverse roads that you’ll never get bored. This means that you’ll have to be attentive and aware of these ever changing conditions but also means that your riding experience will be so enriched by it. One of the great allures of riding the Way is the marked path along your ride, the yellow arrows and scallop shells are ubiquitous and will make it very difficult for you to get lost. And if by any chance you actually do, then you’ll always find someone along the way to guide you back. There is a special feeling of camaraderie amongst all the pilgrims, whether they are walking, riding a bike or on horseback. The same happens with almost all people form the towns and villages along the route, so used to receive, exchange experiences and stories with the pilgrims.

bike tour Portuguese way camino de Santiago

When is the best time to go?

We suggest riding from April to late October. Spring and late summer/autumn are the perfect seasons, while the summer time will always be tempered by winds from the North. Even early November can be considered, especially during the summer of St.- Martin.

What type  of terrain should I expect and what kind  of bike should I use?

This ride is suggested for intermediate riders, and the best bike for the job is a mountain or hybrid bike. While most of the Way is not technical, there are occasional spots where a mountain bike will be of help, especially when crossing the few remains of roman pathways along the way. But for most of the ride, a touring tire will do, so we suggest a standard hardtail or full-suspension mountain bike build with touring tires. The terrain is sized but will mostly be composed of backroads, macadam trails, etc. Gravel can work as well, but a few sections will be hard on the arms if you choose this type of bike. If you opt for an E-buke, we suggest an E-mountain bike, for the reasons listed above.

How many days do you suggest the ride would take?

We suggest 5 to 7 riding days. Experienced riders can certainly take less time ( 3 days maybe), but that'll reduce the immersion feeling of the pilgrimage and will certainly leave you less time to explore the quaint villages or meeting other pilgrims along the way.

What to expect and what how to navigate along the Portuguese way?

For some riders, the St. James Path is a religious experience, but we dare to say that it is a spiritual experience for all of them. Cycling the Portuguese Way to Santiago de Compostela, whether from France, Spain or Portugal is a milestone for many riders, as the Camino leaves its mark in you. The Portuguese Camino is best ridden from Porto (or Lisbon, if you have 15 days total to ride), and you'll get to ride by the northwest of Portugal - the Minho region - and Galicia, in Spain, until you reach Santiago de Compostela. The two best paths from Porto are the Coastal Path and the Central path, both of which ride north - one by the coastline, the other roughly 30km inland, until they merge in Pontevedra, Spain, staying as one all the way to Santiago.

Both Caminos are signalled out by yellow arrows or scallop shells, pointing towards Santiago de Compostela cathedral, making it easy to follow, although if you follow the arrows precisely, you might have to cross some occasional trails and roads which are quite difficult to tackle. What differentiates the Portuguese path from the more known French or Spanish ones is its authenticity - the Camino is not as smooth as the others might be; on the contrary, it's more raw, authentic and adventurous. The central path will provide you with more historical and cultural depth in the Minho region, as you ride by the beautiful Romanic cities of Barcelos, Ponte de Lima and Valença, and is a bit tougher to climb, especially after Ponte de Lima, in the "Labruja" Sierra. The coastal path is smoother and less demanding on the first days but, if you follow all the yellow arrows, you'll find some technical terrain in the second and third days that might slow your progress. Both paths have varied terrain – beautiful tarmac, macadam trails, ancient Roman roads, some trails - and are mostly done by forests and rural areas, with occasional more dense urban areas like Porto, Vigo and Pontevedra. The best bike option for the Camino is a mountain or touring bike, because of the mixed terrain - you can do it by road but you won't be able to follow all the indications. Intermediate to Expert riders might take 4 to 5 days to ride the Camino from Porto, while beginners/intermediate riders might take 6 to 7 days - everybody can do the Camino, but we advise some preparation, as beginners might need to spend many hours on a bike every day.

Bike Tour in the Portuguese Camino by the Coast from Porto map

What itinerary do you suggest? And what should I expect on a day to day basis?

Our suggested day to day experience to cycling the Portuguese Way along the coastal path ( and the one we use on our bike tours) is as follows:

Day 1: Porto (Portugal)

You should arrive a few days early or at least a day early so that you have the time to visit the beautiful and cosy city of Porto, rich with history and monuments like the Clérigos Tower and the D. Luis Bridge. The old quarters of Baixa with its local shops, restaurants and pastry shops, Ribeira a quarter by the river Douro, facing the wine cellars of the Port wine, full with the city’s traditions and historical connection to the wine and the wine country of the Douro. Shopping areas such as Santa Catarina and Aliados Avenue. Not to miss are the great restaurants around town with some of the tastiest food in the country.

Day 2 - Porto to Ofir (Portugal)

On your first riding day we suggest you collect your pilgrim passport and start your adventure by riding from the Porto Cathedral. There you’ll also find the most magnificent views over the city of Porto, its bridges and the Douro River.  The ride starts by descending through the old streets and buildings of Sé Velha and Mouzinho da Silveira street, to arrive at Porto’s riverside Ribeira, where here you’ll enter the cycle paths alongside the Douro river, that will take you all the way to Leça da Palmeira. From here on, you’ll start following the yellow arrow’s by Portugal’s coastline, towards the north. The Camino will be a mix of cycle paths, paved roads and walkways all the way until you reach the historical city of Vila do Conde and the beach resort plus fishing town of Póvoa do Varzim – both of which are great options to stop at, and maybe eat their famed fresh fish and seafood. After Póvoa do Varzim, you’ll pass several smaller fishing villages until you reach Fão, the place where the route will turn towards the ocean once more and take you along the Pinetree forested area of Ofir, a seaside village where we suggest you stay.

Day 3 – Ofir to Caminha (Portugal)

From Ofir you’ll head north, crossing the river to Esposende and then a bit inland following alongside the Cávado River passing through a couple of quaint villages. At km15 you’ll start climbing and enter a more technical trail that will lead you to you a very narrow bridge across the Neiva river – another climb will follow until you reach Viana do Castelo. In this seaside city go across the river, and admire the Santa Luzia church that sits on top of the nearby mountain range. The historical city centre is a great option to stop for lunch and really worth a visit. After Viana, you’ll keep riding north and inland, through the mountain range where some urban single tracks and ancient paved roads will lead you all the way to the beachside town of Vila Praia de Âncora. Here you’ll enter the Ecopista or cycling path, along the shoreline that will take you to the cosy riverside village of Caminha, on the southern bank of the Minho River that marks the border between Portugal and Spain.

Day 4 – Caminha to Bayona (Spain)

After your last night in Portugal head riverside and board the ferry boat to take you A Pasaxe (there’s one every hour, except on Monday), and thus entering Spain. This day offers no big climbs, just ups and downs along the coast of Galicia, through small seaside villages like Oia and Pedra Rubia until you reach Baiona, a beautiful coastal town. Along the way, take time to enjoy these medieval villages across the Galician coastline, and taste the wonderful tapas and seafood. Today you’ll experience a short but sweet ride, to prepare you for your next day, which is the toughest ride of the week, so take your time to relax in Baiona!

Day 5 – Bayona to Pontevedra (Spain)

Today might just be the toughest day of your Camino so we suggest you to have a good breakfast and then resume your ride along the coast and the Sound region towards Vigo town, that’s 25km away from Baiona. One of the highlights of the day is the short but steep climb to reach Saigráns that will enable you to experience one of the most beautiful views of the region: Vigo’s Sound, where the seawater mixes with the Verdugo River, and you’ll be able to see the “bateas” where mussels are produced (a local delicacy) and the Ciés islands in the background – a natural park in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. You will then descend into the busy city of Vigo and then back up, towards the mountain range that overlooks the Ria de Vigo – 12km of macadam trails overlooking the Ria, followed by a descent towards Redondela – from Redondela, the central path and the coastal path merge to become one! Another climb near Cessantes and then a descent to cross the Verdugo river over the Romanic bridge of “Ponte Sampaio”. One final push after and then, from km28 on, it’s a long descent until you reach Pontevedra and its beautiful historical centre. Take your time to explore Pontevedra’s centre on a walk at night time by the Galician plazas of Ourense and Ferraria, where you’ll find the city’s Basilica and Chapel.

Day 6 – Pontevedra to Padrón (Spain)

On this day you’ll continue your pilgrimage, feeling that you’re already getting close to Santiago. You’ll notice a change in the landscape as you’ll be abandoning the coast and returning to inland Galicia, with its lush green woods and forested areas. Start your ride by crossing Rio Lérez and riding north, on the trails alongside the train tracks, facing a climb just under 3km long and with an average inclination of 3,5% - including a couple of steep and technical short sections. Once you cross the river Barosa, you’ll encounter the National Road N550 – pay attention to the crossings in this road. You’ll then keep moving alongside this national road until you reach Caldas de Reis, renowned as a thermal resort. From here, the next 7 kms are upwards. First, a gentle climb out of Caldas de Reis which then gets steeper towards its end. You’ll be riding by trails and backroads, close to the N550 or the highway, taking you through the farmlands and woods of the Camino. As you get closer to the town of Pontecesures, just before Padrón, you’ll see more buildings and share the road with a few cars. Cross the bridge over Rio Ulla and reach Padrón, a village known for being the cradle of Galicia and for its Green Peppers, the Padrón Peppers. Take some time to visit the village, climb to the Santiaguiño do Monte lookout point, visit the botanical gardens or Toxa waterfall and taste the food. If you’re adventurous and it’s in season try the lamprey.

Day 7 – Padrón to Santiago de Compostela (Spain)

This will be your last riding day on the Way of St. James. The distance is short but it will be a small test to your will and tenacity as the route starts going gently uphill almost from the start and will be so till you get to Santiago. As you exit Padrón you’ll enter a series of rural trails between villages and churches near small forested areas, with plenty of small steep climbs, as well as clear signs that the end of the Way is near. As you get closer to Santiago de Compostela you’ll start to have glimpses of the urban area surrounding it. When you arrive visit the plaza surrounding the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, and if inclined to do so, enter it and attend the pilgrim’s mass. If you have time go to the pilgrims' office and collect your pilgrim certificate with your fully stamped pilgrim passport. Indulge in a great meal in some of the great restaurants around town, serving great market vegetables and produce, fish and seafood, as well as hearty meat dishes.

Day 8 – Santiago de Compostela

Santiago Compostela is an ancient city that really deserves a more prolonged visit and instead of leaving right after your arrival, we suggest you stay at least an extra day to admire and visit the beautiful monuments and places, such as its plazas in the central area of the old town and the narrow streets and traditional markets within the old city walls. If you haven’t done so on your arrival day, dedicate this day to visit the pilgrims' office and discover this medieval city's traditions, culture and heritage.

Giro d'Italia stage 3 Live - The sprinters' first dance

Tour of turkey: tobias lund andresen wins stage 4 sprint, moves into race lead.

Dane claims first professional victory ahead of Van Poppel in second and Uhlig in third

Tobias Lund Andresen (DSM-Firmenich PostNL)

Tobias Lund Andresen ((Dsm-firmenich PostNL) emerged from a hectic finish to win stage 4 of the Tour of Turkey in Bodrum.

The Dane needed a late bike change but returned to the peloton and then timed his effort perfectly on the rising finish after Manuele Tarozzi (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) and the remains of the early break were caught in the final kilometre.

Danny Van Poppel (Bora-Hansgrohe) finished second and Henri Uhlig (Alpecin-Deceuninck) third as other riders slowed each other in the search for the best wheel to follow.

Thanks to his stage victory and the time bonuses, Lund Andresen also took the race leader’s blue jersey, which he will wear during the 177.9km fifth stage from Bodrum to Kuşadası.

Lund Andresen was overjoyed to win his first professional race.

“The plan was that if Fabio made it over the climb, we’d go with him but he didn’t have the leg, so we made a nice plan for me and the team did an amazing job and I was able to take the win,” he said.

“It was a hard stage, with a lot of climbing. The roads are not the best, so it’s almost like riding cobblestones the whole day. It was grippy but that was quite nice for me.”

A breakaway again tried to foil the sprinters’ teams and the peloton, with eight riders going away with 110 km to race of the 137.9 km stage.

They worked well together and extended their lead to close to 2:00 but then Polti-Kometa and Astana Qazaqstan drove the chase. The Italian team was keen to defend Giovanni Lonardi’s race lead, while Astana Qazaqstan rode for stage 2 winner Max Kanter.

The hilly profile of the stage again ruled out the pure sprinters, with Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), Fabio Jakobsen (Dsm-firmenich PostNL) and others dropped from the peloton.

The break reduced to five riders over the final climb after 95 km but James Whelan (Q36.5), Calum Johnston (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA),  Tarozzi, Owen Geleijn (TDT - Unibet) and Gianni Marchand (Tarteletto-Isorex) pushed on and held a lead of 40 seconds on the fast ride to Bodrum.

Whelan split the attack on a late climb with 10km to go, with only Tarozzi, Johnston and Marchand able to go with him. They attacked each other and the pace eased so the peloton closed the gap on the run-in to the finish.

Tarozzi refused to give up hope and attacked alone inside the final kilometre. He got a gap but then faded on the rising finish as Lund Andresen timed his effort to perfection.

Giro d'Italia 2024: Preview, full schedule and how to watch live

Tadej Pogacar is chasing his first Giro d'Italia title

The Giro d’Italia 2024 is about to kick off the Grand Tour season in men’s road cycling .

On Saturday 4 May, Venaria Reale will host the opening stage of the 107 th edition of the Corsa Rosa that will see its conclusion three weeks later in Rome on Sunday 26 May.

All eyes will be on the Slovenian superstar Tadej Pogacar , who aims to become the first rider since Marco Pantani in 1998 to achieve the Giro-Tour double.

Reigning champion and Olympic time trial gold medallist, Primoz Roglic , will not be defending his crown, as he has got his eyes set on the Tour de France.

The 2024 edition of the Italian Grand Tour features gruelling mountain stages in the Alps, gravel roads in Tuscany and more than 70 kilometres of time trial. The winner will lift the prestigious Trofeo Senza Fine (Endless Trophy) and wear the coveted Maglia Rosa in the Italian capital.

This year's race will cover a total of 3400.8 kilometres , making it the shortest edition in 45 years.

Find everything you need to know about the Giro d’Italia 2024 below, including the riders to look out for and how to watch the event live.

  • Liege-Bastogne-Liege 2024: Tadej Pogacar powers to second victory
  • Jambaljamts Sainbayar: From braving Ulaanbaatar's freezing roads to making history for Mongolian cycling

Who are the riders to watch at the Giro d’Italia 2024?

Pink jersey (general classification).

There is one overwhelming favourite for the Giro d’Italia 2024, and that is Tadej Pogacar .

Fresh off his second Liège–Bastogne–Liège title in impressive fashion, the two-time Tour de France winner is arriving to Italy in top shape.

Pogacar started his season by conquering the gravel roads of Strade Bianche , riding 81 kilometres solo to claim victory in Siena.

At Volta a Catalunya , the Slovenian swept four out of seven stages, securing the overall victory and sending a clear message to his rivals at the Giro about who the man to beat is.

Geraint Thomas suffered heartbreak at last year’s Giro d’italia, narrowly missing out on the overall victory by just 14 seconds.

The 2018 Tour de France champion was leading the race going into the penultimate stage, only to relinquish the pink jersey to Primoz Roglic after the Slovenian's formidable performance in the individual time trial.

The INEOS Grenadiers leader has some unfinished business with the Corsa Rosa and will try to pose a challenge to Pogacar.

Among the outsiders is Australia's Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R), who finished fourth in the 2021 Tour de France.

This year, the 28-year-old has consistently finished within the top five in week-long stage races. At the Giro d'Italia warm-up race, the Tour of the Alps, he was the runner-up behind the former Maglia Rosa wearer Juan Pedro Lopez , who also will be lining up at the start line in Venaria Reale.

French veteran Romain Bardet recently said that he is at his best level in years and is convinced he can challenge for the podium.

A second place at the Liège–Bastogne–Liège behind Pogacar was a boost of morale for the 33-year-old, who has not been on a Grand Tour podium since 2018, when he finished third at the Tour de France.

Daniel Martínez will lead the BORA - hansgrohe team. The Colombian climber is no longer in the shadow of INEOS stars Geraint Thomas and Egan Bernal , following his move to the German team ahead of this season.

In 2021, Martínez was a strong domestique for compatriot Bernal and helped him secure the overall victory. He also achieved his best overall result in a Grand Tour by finishing in the top five that year. With the absence of teammate Roglic, it is up to Martínez to secure a top result.

“The Killer Bees” Team Visma|Lease a Bike made history in 2023, becoming the first team to claim all three Grand Tours in a single year. Although a repetition of the historic achievement looks difficult, the Dutch team have put their faith in 21-year-old prodigy Cian Uijtdebroeks .

The Belgian has been under the wings of reigning Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard at the O Gran Camiño and Tirreno-Adriatico. Now he faces the ultimate test as Grand Tour captain.

Cyclamen jersey (points classification)

This year’s course is more sprinter-friendly than usual, featuring eight expected mass sprint finishes. Jonathan Milan of Lidl-Trek will aim to defend the maglia ciclamino (mauve jersey for the points classification) that he secured last year.

However, he will face a fierce competition for the mauve jersey as several of the world's top sprinters will travel to Italy.

Soudal Quick-Step will fully support Remco Evenepoel at the Tour de France, giving Tim Merlier the opportunity to pursue success at the Giro.

The Belgian has been one of the fastest sprinters during the first part of the season, winning three stages at the UAE Tour, the Nokere Koerse, and the sprinters’ classic Scheldeprijs.

Another challenge will come from Australian Kaden Groves . In 2023, the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider added stage wins at both the Giro and the Vuelta a España, where he also left with the green jersey.

Biniam Girmay will be back on Italian soil, where he outsprinted Mathieu van der Poel in the Giro two years ago to take his first Grand Tour stage victory. The Eritrean looks to be close to his form from 2022.

Dutch sprinter Olav Kooij will finally get his Grand Tour debut. The 22-year-old beat Mads Pedersen twice to claim two stage wins at the Paris-Nice in March and is one of the most promising sprinters in the peloton.

Five-time Vuelta a España stage winner Fabio Jakobsen is set to race his first Giro and can complete the set of Grand Tour wins, having already secured a stage victory at the Tour de France in 2022.

Will Filippo Ganna sprint for stage wins again? The Italian time trial specialist was fighting in the bunch sprints at last year’s Vuelta a España and showed a new side of his talent.

Despite not having shone in the last couple of years, Caleb Ewan and Fernando Gaviria are both multiple Grand Tour stage winners and they have the power to be competitive in the bunch sprints.

Blue jersey (mountains classification)

Unlike in the Tour de France, the winner of the mountains classification in the Giro d’Italia is usually not the same as the winner of the general classification.

Thibaut Pinot , who has since retired, clinched the blue jersey in the previous edition while finishing fifth overall.

However, the breakaway riders often view for the mountains classification.

A potential contender is Simon Geschke of Cofidis. The German rider was close to seal the polka dot jersey at the Tour de France in 2022, but ultimately Jonas Vingegaard ended up with both the yellow and polka dot jersey.

Other names to watch are Britain's Simon Carr , who just won a stage and the mountains classification at the Tour of the Alps, and Dutchman Koen Bouwman , who is aiming for his second blue jersey after claiming it in 2022.

Key stages of the Giro d’Italia 2024

Five stages are singled out by cycling experts as the most decisive for the Giro d'Italia 2024.

The first one arrives already on stage two , which is the earliest summit finish in 35 years. It is a true climbing test, which takes the peloton to Santuario di Oropa (6.2% over 11.8km) and will give an early indication of who will be the main general classification contenders.

A 40.6-kilometre time trial awaits the peloton on stage seven . The course is technical and the uphill finish should shake up the top ten. Some will see it as an oppornunity to gain time, while others will try to limit their losses.

Stage 15 is the queen stage of the 2024 Giro d’Italia. Containing 5,200 metres of elevation gain over 220 kilometres, it is a brutal day in the mountains. Hopefully, snowfall will not affect this blockbuster Alpine stage.

The riders get a rest day following the queen stage, but already on stage 16 , climbing legs will be tested again. It includes the Passo dello Stelvio , the Cima Coppi of this year’s race. At an elevation of 2,757 metres it is the second highest pass in the Alps.

The lack of oxygen at high altitude will make the peloton suffer. With over 100 kilometres remaining from the summit of Stelvio, the favourites who might fall behind still have the chance to catch up before the final ascents to Passo Pinei and Monte Pana.

Stage 20 , the penultimate stage before the procession around the streets of Rome, promises a decisive battle in the mountains for the final general classification. Two gruelling ascents of Monte Grappa - 18.2 kilometres at 8.1% - will determine who earns the right to wear the pink jersey in Rome and hoist the Endless Trophy .
