Nine INCREDIBLE Things to Do in Jinja, Uganda: The Source of the Nile

Jinja, Uganda is one of the best cities to visit in Africa. It’s safe, low-key, and very  mzungu (foreigner)-friendly. It has a stunning location amid the rolling hills on the banks of the legendary Nile River. Whether you want heart-pounding adrenaline activities or a relaxing day on the river, there are plenty of things to do in Jinja.

How long should you spend in Jinja?

Jinja is a small city. You can walk around the downtown area in a couple hours. So you can easily squeeze Jinja into even a tight Uganda itinerary.

Two days would be enough to cover most of these activities in Jinja. You’d spend one day in the city and the second day doing a full-day activity. If you really want to do everything on this list, you’d need at least three days.

Some backpackers in Uganda spend significantly more time in Jinja. It’s one of the most traveler-friendly cities in all of Africa, due to its wide array of amenities and total lack of hassle. You’ll meet folks who thought they’d be here for a day or two and end up volunteering for weeks or months.

Jinja is also one of the most common digital nomad bases in East Africa — it’s one of the only places in the region where you can reliably find good WiFi!

The absolute best things to do in Jinja, Uganda

1. go rafting.

Topping every list of activities in Jinja is the thing the town is famous for: Epic Class V white water rafting.

The rafting in Jinja is so good that it rivals  gorilla trekking as the main tourist draw to the country. It’s some of the best commercial rafting anywhere in the world.

Most people do a one-day trip with Nile River Explorers or Nalubale Rafting . You meet in Jinja around 9 am, drive out to the rafting spot, run the river, have lunch where you take out the raft, and get back to Jinja by 3 pm. This package costs $140.

Rafting in Jinja is extremely intense — you’ll almost certainly end up in the water on a few of the rapids. My raft flipped twice in Class IV+ white water and I ended up under the raft both times. But as long as you’re comfortable in the water, it’s very safe. You don’t even need to know how to swim!

If you want a less-intense day on the river, you can choose a Class III rafting option instead (which is also good for families). Or you can do a river boarding trip. You can even go tubing through some of the milder rapids. And if you’re a kayaker, there are options for that as well. In short, if you’re looking for any kind of outdoor activities in Jinja, you can find them!

2. Visit the Source of the Nile

While most visitors to Jinja will experience the most ferocious sections of the Nile on a rafting trip, it’s also worth checking out the little stream where the river begins.

The Source of the Nile has long been a topic of dispute . Colonial European explorers spent the better part of the 19th century tramping all over East and Southern Africa in search of it — encountering many false positives along the way.

Today, multiple sources of the river are acknowledged, but one of them is in Jinja. A visit here is more about the history and atmosphere (and checking it off your bucket list) than about the sight itself being amazing. But it’s an essential pilgrimage for anyone traveling in Africa and one of the most popular places to visit in Jinja.

Access to the site costs 30,000 shillings. You’ll pay your fee at the main gate and walk past handicraft stalls until you encounter a plaque marking the spot from land. Walk down to the river from here and you’ll find a few more signs detailing the history. To the left is a statue of Gandhi, whose ashes were scattered here (among other locations).

You can get the idea from land, but if you want a closer look at the source, a boat trip is the ideal way to get it. Boat captains will approach you and you can haggle for a decent price. $25 per group is pretty typical. The trip takes about two hours and you can be dropped off on the opposite bank if you want to check out the Source Gardens afterward.

You can walk to the Source of the Nile from central Jinja. Follow Bell Ave. out past the roundabout, and turn left on Cliff Rd. (It’s clearly signposted.) A boda (motorbike taxi) costs 3,000 shillings.

3. Check out the architecture

Under the facade of a typical East African town, Jinja’s historic center is quite beautiful. It clearly reflects the city’s status as a crossroads on East African trade routes.

Walk down Main Street and you’ll find British colonial buildings, Indian palaces, and Ugandan chapati stands. Some of the most beautiful buildings are at the intersection of Main St. and Naranbhai Rd. The Madhvani Building (on the corner here) is one of the most iconic buildings in the country. The side streets near Main St. also have some beautiful, if slightly more faded, examples of the local architecture.

It only takes about an hour to walk around the historic center. Many of the buildings house markets or cafes, so you can poke your nose in to see their elaborate old-world interiors. This is one of the best free things to do in Jinja, since none of the buildings charge admission.

4. Volunteer with Soft Power Education

Soft Power Education is one of the best charities of its kind in Uganda. This education center serves preschoolers and special needs children, and provides educational opportunities that most kids in East Africa don’t have access to.

Better yet, it has one of the most sustainable   short term volunteer programs in the country. Whether you want to help out for a day or a week, you can do so. And you can rest assured that the tasks you’ll be assigned to won’t lead to unhealthy short-term attachments and other problems associated with voluntourism .

If you have more time in Jinja, and especially if you have the most in-demand skills, consider signing up for one of Soft Power’s longer-term volunteer efforts. You’ll be matched with work that’s most appropriate for your skill levels (possibly working with kids, possibly providing a support role to their infrastructure program, but never teaching). Volunteers are most needed during the Ugandan school sessions.

5. Relax at a river camp

Uganda may be a landlocked country, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the beach! Along with  Lake Bunyonyi   and the Ssesse Islands, Jinja is one of the top places to relax at a lakeside resort.

8 km outside Jinja is Lake Bujagali, an offshoot of the Nile River in the village of Bujagali. The village has two fantastic river camps catering to travelers of all budgets — Explorers River Camp and Nile River Explorers.

You could spend days relaxing at the camps: wake up late, have a leisurely breakfast, swim in the bilharzia-free water, play on the rope swings, take a boat trip, watch the sunset, repeat. The camps also organize more adrenaline-based river activities (including rafting).

Both camps charge around $8 per person to camp, $12 for a dorm bed, and in the $30+ range for private rooms. They have pools, restaurants and bars on-site. I stayed at Explorers River Camp and really enjoyed the mix of locals and travelers who hung out there, while Nile River Explorers attracts more overland trucks and party-focused backpackers.

You can also purchase a day-pass to use the facilities at either camp, or just stop by for a meal or a drink

It’s easy to reach Bujagali from central Jinja. A boda costs 5,000 shillings. Alternatively, pick up a matatu from the main roundabout by the big bridge for 1,000 shillings. You can also walk the 8 km in about 90 minutes — you’ll pass through a dozen friendly little villages along the way.

6. Shop for local handicrafts

Jinja is one of the best places in East Africa to stock up on authentic, locally produced handicrafts. You’ll get bargain prices purchasing directly from the artisans or from small shops where your money goes directly back into the community.

A few shops worth checking out are the store attached to The Source Cafe and the Cuupa Arts Gallery. Out by Bujagali you can also check out Kilombera Weaving and Endowoza Arts Center, where you can also see demonstrations from the students and artists.

If you’re just after cheap souvenirs, the craft shops lining both sides of Main Street near The Source Cafe are good options. Quality is lower than at the specialty shops, but you can still get a nice woven basket for less than a few dollars if your bargaining skills are sharp enough.

7. Chat with locals at The Source Cafe

The Source Cafe has to be one of my favorite coffee shops in the entire world.

This little colonial-era coffee shop barely has space for 30 people, and it’s always crowded. You’ll see old men reading the paper, groups of friends gathering to gossip, and even members of the local chess club coming to compete. It’s a very friendly atmosphere and you’ll almost inevitably be invited to join the locals for a cup of coffee. Even though it’s in every Jinja travel guide, I was the only  mzungu  in there all three times I visited.

In addition to the atmosphere, the coffee is pretty darn good and the meals are tasty and affordable. You can get a large French press and an egg/fruit/toast breakfast for under 10,000 shillings.

The only downside of The Source Cafe is service can be a little slow. Be patient and enjoy the conversation and atmosphere. Expect to spend at least an hour here, even if you’re just stopping in for a coffee.

Also, the cookies are awesome.

8. Take a sunset river cruise

In case you haven’t noticed, most of the top things to do in Jinja have to do with the Nile. And what better way to end a trip here than with a sunset cruise on the mystical river?

If the weather is nice, you’ll be treated to a spectacular sunset on the river from a double-decker boat. This is also one of the best ways to see the diversity of bird life around Jinja. African Fish Eagle sightings are almost guaranteed.

Sunset cruises depart from Jinja and Bujagali every night. They last about two hours and include drinks and snacks. Prices start at $40 per person if you book through a tour agency, but if you show up at the boat dock and bargain you can get it down to $25.

9. Enjoy a delicious meal at The Deli

Jinja is by far the best place in Uganda to enjoy all the creature comforts from home — including  mzungu  comfort food. Say goodbye to stuffy safari dinners and Rolex. This is your chance to get a kale salad or hummus wrap.

Of all the  mzungu -focused cafes in Jinja (and there are many, and most of them are very good), the best is The Deli. You order inside and then grab a seat on the expansive patio or at one of the tables in the other room. The menu includes sandwiches and wraps, salads, heartier mains, coffee and smoothies. Prices are very reasonable — expect to spend $5 here including drinks.

Plus, if you’re searching for good WiFi in Uganda, look no further. The Deli is the only cafe in Jinja where you could reliably work from a laptop for hours. Trust me, you won’t be the only relieved backpacker pecking away at your keyboard!

Where to stay in Jinja

Jinja’s accommodation scene has options for campers and backpackers, mid-range travelers, and all-out luxury. You can choose from a downtown hotel or a bush camp. Really, there’s something for everyone.

If you want to stay in town, the best option on a budget is Nalubale Tea House. They only have a few rooms, so you’ll need to book way in advance (as in, three months early in high season). Camping is available as well. Mid-range travelers should try Source of the Nile Hotel.

If you’d rather stay on the river, the best options are the camps in Bujagali. But if you’re after an all-out splurge, the Jinja area has one of Uganda’s most spectacularly situated lodges — Wildwaters Lodge . You can stay in a room with an outdoor bathtub overlooking the river’s most infamous rapids. It’s definitely not cheap, at $345 for a single full-board, and it’s only accessible by boat.

If you want remoteness on a more reasonable budget, consider pitching a tent at The Haven. It’s still outrageously expensive — $40 for camping — but the setting is beyond gorgeous, and it’s much more low-key than Bujagali. You’ll need your own wheels to reliably get here, or you’ll be dependent on very occasional matatus.

Unfortunately, the Jinja area lost one of its best backpacker bases when a recent dam project flooded the island that was home to The Hairy Lemon . The owners are reportedly looking for a new place to set up shop.

How to get to Jinja, Uganda

Jinja is well-connected to the rest of eastern Uganda and offers some of the safest transportation options in the country.

If you’re rafting or planning to stay at one of the river camps in Bujagali, the best way to get from Kampala to Jinja is on their daily shuttles. These are free of charge for customers. Pickups are in the early morning to get to Jinja, and in the late afternoon to return to Kampala. The drive takes about 90 minutes.

If you can’t get a shuttle from a rafting company, the next-best option between Kampala and Jinja is the  Pineapple Express Bus . This costs $10 per person and picks up from hostels in Kampala and Entebbe. It’s worth paying the extra money for the improved safety standards compared to public transport.

Your option of last resort to Jinja from Kampala is to take a coach bus or — if you’re  really  unlucky — a matatu. The best coach bus company is Elgon Flyer, which continues to Mbale (book tickets a day in advance). The best place to pick up a matatu is on the corner of the roundabout outside the Oasis Shopping Mall in Kampala, or from the Bujagali roundabout in Jinja. Whatever you do, don’t go to the central taxi park in Kampala — you’ll end up sitting in traffic for over an hour just to get out of the city center.

If you’re heading to Sipi Falls or Mbale, your best bet is to hop on the Elgon Flyer Bus as it passes through from Kampala — but you’ll need to book tickets in advance. The bus station is another mile on the Mbale road past the Bujagali roundabout. If you can’t get a ticket, a regular stream of matatus runs from Jinja to Mbale, but they’re very slow (3+ hours). Your best bet is to go to the bus station and ask the staff there to show you the taxi stage (this way you can hop on an already-full vehicle and save time waiting in the taxi park).

A few additional Jinja travel tips

• Jinja is at lower elevation than southwest Uganda, but it still stays mild. Expect 80-degree-Fahrenheit days, with nights in the 60’s. If you’re rafting, the water is often warmer than the air.
• Jinja is one of the only places in Uganda where you can get an iced coffee. Enjoy it!
• Because Jinja is so popular with volunteers, the matatu and boda drivers make an extra effort to overcharge here. Know the correct price before you get in/on any vehicles.
• Both the Nile River and Lake Bujagali are theoretically free of bilharzia, hippos and crocs. So don’t be nervous when you raft or swim!
• If you’re continuing on to Kenya, you don’t need to double back to Kampala. The night buses to Nairobi pass through Jinja and you can get a last-minute seat. You can even get Kenyan shillings out of most of the ATM’s in town.

That photo in the raft looks amazing and scary at the same time! I would want to try both, but the sunset river cruise sounds even more lovely!! How were the mosquitoes? did you have to lather yourself in anti-bite cream?

Thanks Josy! Honestly the mosquitoes weren’t bad — I didn’t really have any issues in Jinja. I did bring 98% DEET and put it on right before dusk and first thing in the morning, but I really only had to do that because I was camping.

Jinja Uganda Itinerary & Best Things to Do in Jinja

Located 80 kilometres east of Uganda’s capital Kampala  is the town of Jinja. Originally a fishing village, it was founded in 1901 by British settlers as a hub for sugar cane and cotton farming.

Today, it’s often called “the adventure capital of East Africa”. Its location on the shore of Lake Victoria makes it the perfect place for water sports, such as white water rafting, kayaking, and stand-up paddling.

Jinja is also famous for being situated at the source of the White Nile — one of the major tributaries of the longest river in the world.

I visited Jinja for two days as part of my three-week-long solo trip to Uganda , Kenya , Tanzania , and Rwanda .

Best Time to Go to Jinja, Uganda

Jinja is located close to the Equator, therefore has consistently warm temperatures, high humidity, and a lot of rainfall throughout the year. 

The warmest months are February and March with average daytime temperatures of 30°C (85°F) and nighttime temperatures rarely dropping below 18°C (64°F). If you’re averse to heat, it’s best to avoid visiting during this period. The lowest temperatures are in May (around 25°C during the day).

Although it can rain at any time of the year, the wettest months are April and November with up to 19 days of rain. January has the lowest chance of rain.

The peak tourist seasons in Jinja are in July, October, and February. Bear in mind that prices for hotels, flights, and tours will be most expensive during this time.

I visited Jinja in October but since I traveled by local buses and Couchsurfed, I wasn’t affected by the high prices.

How to Get to Jinja from Kampala or Kenya

If you’re going to book activities in Jinja, like white water rafting, etc, check with the company if they provide a shuttle service to and from Kampala. Some companies offer it for free if you book an activity with them.

Otherwise, here are three different transportation options to get to Jinja:

Jinja has a small domestic airport: Jinja Airport (IATA: JIN), also known as Kimaka Airstrip, located about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) north of Jinja’s central business district. It only serves flights to and from Entebbe International Airport.

By Express Coach

Jinja is on the East African Highway, which links Uganda to Kenya, DR Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi.

Most coaches coming from Kenya or Tanzania will pass through Jinja on their way to Kampala (and vice versa). Keep in mind that it’s not an official stop, so you need to tell your driver to drop you off in Jinja. Just be sure to remind them, otherwise you might end up in another city… or country!

A matatu is a shared minivan taxi used by locals to travel within the city and beyond. Personally, it’s my favorite way to travel in East Africa as it’s the cheapest and the most interesting. By interesting, I mean crazy.

In Kampala, you can get a matatu from the massive taxi park on Burton Street. Look for the Jinja sign, or if you can’t find it, just ask around. The fare is about UGX 6,000 – 8,000 (approx. USD 2) per person.

Depending on traffic, it should take around 2 – 3 hours. Don’t take matatus if you have a tight schedule — they often wait until they’re full before they depart and they will be picking up and dropping off passengers along the way.

How to Get Around in Jinja

Jinja is quite spread out. Public transports in town are mainly boda bodas (motorcycle taxis). Fares shouldn’t cost more than UGX 4000 – 5000 for up to 10-kilometre journeys, but agree on the fare before you ride.

Keep in mind that outside of the main town area, the roads are in pretty bad conditions. Most boda boda drivers don’t usually provide helmets, as they don’t wear any either. If this is a problem for you, try asking your hotel if they can recommend a boda boda driver that provides a helmet. Or book through SafeBoda, a Ugandan e-hailing app.

The place where I was staying was in quite a rural area and I didn’t see any SafeBoda drivers, so I went with regular boda bodas. Plus, I didn’t have a local SIM card or internet connection, so it would have been difficult to book one anyway.

Things to Do in Jinja

I visited Jinja with no exact plans apart from wanting to see more of Uganda beyond its capital city. Although I knew the place was famous for adventure sports, I wasn’t physically, mentally, or financially prepared to take part in any. So, I went with a free-and-easy itinerary, and let Jinja present itself to me.

My Couchsurfing host, Rogers, is a philanthropist and director at Diep Ark Orphanage Home . He took two days off his busy schedule to show me around town, take me to see the Source of the Nile, and share a traditional meal together.

Here, I’ve listed down some of the best things you can see and do in Jinja, Uganda:

1. Visit the Source of the Nile

Since Jinja’s biggest claim to fame is being situated at the source of the Nile, it makes sense to start your trip with a visit to this famous spot.

Known as the world’s longest river, the Nile leaves Lake Victoria in Jinja and continues its journey of more than 6,000 kilometres to Egypt, where it flows into the Mediterranean Sea.

The exact spot is marked my a modest signboard that reads “The Source of R. Nile – Jinja – World’s Longest River” on a tiny island as pictured below. This is supposedly where the lake ends and the river starts.

To get there, you will have to hire a motorized traditional boat. At $20 per boat and no other tourist to share it with, I found it too expensive, so I was happy to see it from the river banks.

If you choose to go, this is what you should expect to see:

Depending on the water level, you may be able to stand on the signpost slab for photos.

Also in the vicinity are some souvenir shops, as well as several restaurants and bars. If you’re a beer drinker, don’t forget to try the Nile Special beer  and donate the bottle to the “Drunk Tree” .

On the opposite side of the river (the western bank), there is the Speke Monument to honor John Speke, a British Indian Army officer who was the first European to see the source of the Nile.

You will also see the Mahatma Ghandi Monument  here. After his death in 1948, his ashes were scattered in all the major rivers of the world, including the Nile.

2. Go on a Nile Cruise

If you want to spend a longer time on the river itself, consider going on a Nile cruise. Sunset cruises typically last for around 2 hours, but there are also full-day options that will take you to see rainforests along the river.

Along the way, you can spot animals, such as birds, otters, and primates. Most of the cruises come with an open bar and all-you-can-eat buffets.

3. Go White Water Rafting

White water rafting is the most popular activity in Jinja. With class 3, 4, and 5 rapids, white water rafting in Jinja is exciting for all skill levels. If you’re a total beginner, class 3 is ideal for you. It does require some maneuvering skills, but you can learn them pretty quickly.

Class 5, on the other hand, features some difficult descents with a relatively high chance of falling over. In any case, you will have crew members following you in a kayak. Tour packages include lunch, equipment, and guides.

4. Do Other Water Sports

Other than rafting, there are a few other water activities you can do in Jinja:

• Stand-up paddling
• River boarding

5. Try the SUP Hammock

6. go bungee jumping.

Would an adventure capital be called an adventure capital be without bungee jumping? I doubt it.

Jinja is the only place in Uganda and one of the few places in Africa where you can bungee jump. Boasting an award-winning 5-star crew and following the New Zealand / Australia safety standards, bungee jumping by Adrift Uganda  allows you to jump over the Nile, which ends with a little dip in the river itself.

The maximum weight is 260 kg, so you can jump with a friend!

7. Go Mountain Biking

Most of the activities in Jinja center around the River Nile, but if you don’t want to get wet, you can explore the shore on a bike instead. You can either rent a bike and go on a self-guided adventure, or join day tours / multi-day safaris like the ones offered by Bikeventures .

Bikeventures is a social enterprise that donates all their profits to the COOP (Cycling out of Poverty) foundation.

Other options for exploring the Nile shores include quad-biking and horseback riding.

8. Go Bird Watching

If you love birds, you’re in luck. The river provides a fertile environment for many bird species to call this place home. You have a chance of spotting hornbills, kingfishers, guineafowls, flufftails, and pelicans, among many others.

Prime Safaris & Tours offer birding safaris of varying lengths, from 2 hours to 24 days!

9. Explore Jinja Town

Jinja is an industrial town but there are still some parts that are charmingly quiet with lots of greenery and some colonial buildings.

Take your time exploring the local markets and shopping for souvenirs. You can also find a bookstore and art shops.

10. Have a Barbecue

Or specifically, have a Car-B-Que at Explorers River Camp , a lively resort / campsite with a river spa, a water slide, a rope swing, and an outdoor lounge overlooking the river. The barbecue pit is so cool it deserves a mention. And the camp itself is shrouded in greenery.

From what I see in both Jinja and Kampala, Ugandan people sure love to party! Jinja has its own bars and night clubs, including one with an outdoor terrace over the river.

My visit coincided with Halloween night, so Rogers and I, along with two other travelers he hosted, and a few family members went to celebrate at one of the clubs.

12. Volunteer for a Cause

If you have more time to spare in Jinja, consider volunteering with the many organizations and charitable causes in the area. From volunteering in orphanages to teaching English in rural schools, the opportunity are endless. If you can’t contribute your time, donations are always welcome.

Arianne — the Canadian traveler I met — had just completed a volunteering program in a local school.

When she returned to Canada, she founded a charity called One Heart to Another to help the poor families in Africa. What I love about it is that once you donate, they will post a photo of the families that receive your donation, holding a placard with your name on it, and the items they bought with your contribution. That way, you can be certain that your money goes to the right people.

How Many Days Do You Need in Jinja?

Some people visit Jinja only as a day trip. If you’re going to do white-water rafting, some tour operators can arrange transportation to and from Kampala, so you don’t have to spend the night in Jinja.

However, if you plan to do more than that and enjoy Ugandan countryside at a more relaxed pace, I’d recommend spending at least 2 days .

I didn’t do any water activities in Jinja. But in general, if I take part in water sports or any strenuous outdoor activities, I’d prefer staying an extra day to recuperate and do my laundry.

Where to Stay in Jinja

Bikeventures House Uganda – Located 300 m from the Coronation Park, this property provides free WiFi, luggage storage space, a washing machine, and bicycle rental for guests. From USD 10  per night for a bunk bed in a mixed dormitory room.

Jinja Base Camp – Features an outdoor pool, a restaurant, a sun terrace, and a bar. Barbecue facilities are available. Guests can also relax in the garden or shared lounge area. From USD 15  per night for a bed in a dormitory room, with breakfast.

Royal Park Hotel – Located in Jinja town center, 400 m from the local market and 10 minutes to the supermarket. All units come with a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom. From USD 45  per night for a Deluxe Single Room with balcony. Inclusive of breakfast.

Nile Front Cottages   – Located 1.8 mi from Source of the Nile, this property comes with a garden and a terrace with lake views. Nearby points of interest include Rugby Pitch and Jinja Golf and Tennis Club. From USD 105 for a Deluxe Room with breakfast.

Final Thoughts

Is Jinja worth visiting?

Yes, it was for me. I didn’t do any of the adventurous activities that Jinja is famous for (unless riding a boda boda counts), but still enjoyed my visit immensely.

Sometimes I visit a place not to see or do the typical tourist attractions they have, but just to observe and experience the local lifestyle. And that’s precisely what I did in Jinja. It is a good place for you to get a glimpse of the rural life in Uganda but is still developed enough to travel comfortably in.

In short, Jinja has a lot to offer — both in the water and on land — and definitely deserves 2 days out of your trip in Uganda. It also makes for a great stop if you’re on your way to Kenya.

I would love to join the river cruise – there’s no croc right? Hehe.

And that drunk tree made me laughed a bit – I remembered a similar tree in my kampung (now no longer there). It’s a tree where drunken husbands are to lepak until they are a bit sober before allowed into the house. While waiting, they will drink again as they are gathering with drunken friends – and end up staying there longer hahaha

Thank you for your comment, Jenn. From my short experience, I would say yes, it is safe for solo female travelers. In fact, I felt quite safe in all of the East African countries I visited, except in Tanzanian bus stations — it’s best to go with a local if you don’t want to get scammed.

Perfect 2 day itinerary for jinja, uganda.

The adventure capital of East Africa, the town of Jinja in Uganda certainly isn’t short of adrenaline-pumping things to do!

Set at the Source of the White Nile, river-based activities (unsurprisingly) take the main stage here, but the stunning scenery and great community of Jinja, Uganda also means there’s a lot to enjoy out the water too.

I found myself in Jinja as part of my overland trip through Africa – to be honest I’d never even heard of the place before the tour, but was delighted that our itinerary included 3 days there… if only it had been sunny!

But despite the clouds and the occasional out of season downpours (this is Uganda after all!) I had a blast getting to see the best of this small city.

And so, if you’re travelling in Uganda, East Africa or even Africa as a whole, make sure you allow at least 2 days for Jinja, Uganda.

For many, it’s a highlight.

Day 1 in jinja.

Your first day in Jinja, Uganda really should be all about the Nile – in it, on it and around it!

As such I recommend starting your day with a boat trip to see this river’s great source.

Actually, when you get there, it’s a bit of anti-climax – a small amount of bubbles marked with a random metal sign – but there’s something so African, nonchalant and understated about it all, I kind of liked it!

Plus, I’m also recommending a boat trip to the Nile, because it means you get to take in this city’s stunning location from the water and to spot some beautiful birds and snap some great photos too.

After all, who doesn’t like a boat trip?!

There’s a cheap way to do a boat trip to the Source of the Nile, which actually skirts the national park and therefore entrance fee, but means you don’t get to see the statue marking the spot where Gandhi’s, yes that’s right Gandhi’s, ashes were scattered.

If you do want to see this, you’ll have to cough up a bit more for an official tour.

Otherwise ask around and score yourself a cheap, local deal!

In the afternoon of Day 1, it’s time to get a bit active, so choose from either kayaking or white water rafting on the River Nile.

These are the 2 most popular activities to do in Jinja, Uganda and, as such, are offered by numerous companies based in the town.

Almost any accommodation provider, should be able to connect you with a tour and all you’ll have to do then is to decide how hardcore you want it! And, if you’re all about the adrenaline activities, then no trip to Africa would be complete without a stop at Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe / Zambia border.

What better way to end your Nile day than with a sunset cruise?

There’s few more memorable ways to take in the majesty of the world’s most famous river than with the colours of the fading sunlight bouncing off the glass-like water… a beer in hand!

Normally, you’ll need a set number of people to secure a cruise, so try to get a group together and enjoy en masse. It’ll be cheaper this way too!

A sunset cruise really is Jinja to a tee!

And when it comes to accommodation in Jinja, I highly recommend staying at the Nile River Camp.

They have a choice of camping, glamping or bungalows and can organise loads of great activities for you.

Day 2 in Jinja, Uganda

Hopefully you’ve had your Nile fix, because Day 2 in Jinja, Uganda is all about exploring other parts of this great town.

Set in the centre of the action are some great cafes.

There’s a large NGO crowd in Jinja, which means Mzungas are provided for and you can get some excellent coffee and green smoothies here, which I thoroughly appreciated!

The Source Café is a firm favourite, but I actually preferred The Deli.

After breakfast, it’s time to wander the streets of Jinja, investigating the many souvenir and art shops, as well as snapping some of the crumbling colonial buildings – I loved the Post Office in particular.

The 2 nd afternoon of your Jinja, Uganda itinerary again involves some active fun, but this time on land.

Choose from either mountain biking or horse riding and you’ll get to see the beautiful, lush green, landscape of this part of the world in a way you normally wouldn’t.

Again, most accommodation providers in Jinja should be able to arrange the above activities for you.

Otherwise, during your morning in town, do some investigating and bargain yourself a low price for a same-day departure.

Finish your 2 nd day in Jinga, Uganda by getting your hands on one of the country’s famous Rolexs.

No I’m not talking about watches here!

I’m talking about a Ugandan delicacy – essentially a chapatti rolled up with cooked egg, meat and vegetables inside.

Available at almost any street snack stall in Jinja, those situated near Lake Bujagali do some of the best I’ve tried and you can then enjoy your dinner at the side of this beautiful body of water just a short walk away.

Oh, and don’t forget your camera for this lake either!

An orphanage and school project, this superb grassroots operation is always keen for helpers and the kids and staff are amazing!

There’s 2 good times of the year to travel Uganda.

The first is during the months of December, January and February, and the second is between the months of June and August.

Jinja, Source of the Nile and places to visit in Uganda

Where is Jinja in Uganda and how we can mark the top places to visit there? It was a starting question to me when I included this place in my Uganda Itinerary. So, Jinja is a famous city in Uganda and home to the historic Source of the Nile River. It is the fourth biggest town in Uganda that lies 80km east of Kampala. Nowadays it is the adrenaline capital of East Africa .

Although Uganda is a land-locked country with no access to a shoreline. Even then you can find the lake Bunyony and the Ssesse Islands to get a touch of good beaches. So, Jinja is not less than the previous two places and is one of the top places to visit and relax at a lakeside resort in Uganda. About 50% of the population of Jinja town are migrants from different parts of Uganda, or countries like India, Pakistan , Somalia, and Europe.

How to get to Jinja?

Jinja is well connected with other regions of Uganda. You can reach Jinja from Kampala in two hours. It lies about 80km from Kampala. The road is used for two-way traffic, so, mostly it leads to a delay in your arrival. You can take a bus from Buganda Bus Park or Arura park beside Kampala Road. One side fare is 10000USh($3). However, a VIP option of Pineapple express is also present. That will lift you from your hostels from Kampala/Entebbe and will drop you at your required place in Jinja. In this case, the price will be 10$ per person. Jinja bus station and Taxi stand that lies beside Jinja Central Market is the best place to get transport to other cities of Uganda.

You can also visit Jinja while approaching from Kenya side. In this way, the distance from Busia is 120km and can be covered within 2 and a half hours. I used this option while my overland tour from Kenya to Uganda by Bus and get off in Jinja before my next journey to Kampala.

How to Get Around to Visit Places in Jinja Uganda?

The town of Jinja is a compact and walkable place. Hence you can get around to visit most of the tourist places on foot in Jinja Uganda. If you want to go to a far-off place then Boda-Bodas is a good and economical option. You can expect to pay a fare of 1000USH to 3000USH(less than $1). Furthermore, if you want to visit Buja Gali then you expect to pay about 5000USH(1.5$)

Places to stay in Jinja Uganda?

In the city center, you can stay in Jinja Base Camp or in Casa Mia Baliidha which has very good review scores. On the riverside best options are camps in Bujagali and similar options. I stayed in Jinja Base Camp that I booked by Booking.com . It was a good budget option that met my expectation and was a good value for the cost. It has a small pool and a nice dining option.

Places to visit in Jinja Uganda

I reached early in the morning Jinja. After checking into my hostel and taking a few hours’ rest, I was ready to go into the town. First of all, I went to forex to exchange money near the central market. Then I took a Boda Bodas to reach the Source of The Nile.

Source of the Nile River in Jinja

To visit the source of the Nile River is the second most top attraction among the places to visit in Jinja, Uganda. The first one is Mountain Gorilla trekking in Bwindi. Till the end of the 19 th century, it was believed that Jinja was the actual source of the Nile. However, then certain other claims were also added to the list of claims. So, now we can say, it is among one of the multiple sources of the Nile River. There is an entrance fee of 30000 USH($9). After getting your entry you walk past numerous gift shops and reach the river. You can read the history of the land on your way.

From Jinja central, you can take a Boda Bodas at 3000USH($1). It is about 5km from Jinja Central. If you want to take a closer look then you can get a boat for 25$ for two hours. On the western side of the source of the Nile river, you can visit The Speke Monument too. Speke monument is dedicated to John Hanning Speke who discovered the source of the Nile very the first time in 1856.

Pay Tribute to Mahatma Ghandhi’S Monument

In the Source of the Nile Park, you can visit and pay tribute to the Memorial of Mahatma Gandhi. At this place, the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were poured into the Nile River by his wish. As, before his death, Mahatma Gandhi wished to have his ashes poured on the great Nile river. Moreover, there is a statue of Gandhi was also constructed close to the source of the Nile river. So, after visiting the source of the Nile, tourists usually stop to take photos at the monument

Take a Rafting tour in White Nile

The first and the foremost activity in Jinja is to take a rafting tour in the waters of the White Nile. Due to extreme water adventures, Jinja is known as the Adrenaline capital of Africa. So, rafting is a prime activity in Jinja. It is not less than the Mountain Gorilla trekking in Uganda. Besides, you can find the world’s best commercial rafting here in Jinja. Although you need a steel heart to do this adventure and absorb the thrill that is related to this activity. However, there are available classes from grade 1 to grade 5 for the level of adventure you want to choose. The offer price for a half-day/full-day rafting tour is $125/140$.

Experience a Sunset Cruise in Nile River

You must enrich your evening here with a sunset cruise on the mystical Nile River. Sunset cruises depart from Jinja and Bujagali every night. It lasts for two hours and you have to pay about 25/40$ per person. The cost includes the snacks in it.

MAke a Purchase from Jinja Central Market

You can buy some authentic Ugandan handicrafts from Central Market Jinja. By accommodating several thousand vendors it is one of the biggest central markets of Uganda under a roof. From this place, you can find different varieties of spices, fresh fruits, clothes, fashion design, and art & crafts. It is a double story market and you can get a good overview of the market from the second floor. In the market remember to bargain before purchasing any items. It connects with the main street of Jinja for its northwest side.

Walk through Historic MAin Street of OLd Town of Jinja

Main Street Jinja offers a historic and pleasant walk in the center of Jinja. While your pleasant walk, you can take a cup of coffee from source café or spice café. These are small colonial-type cafés on the Main Street of Jinja. Here you will find many local persons to have a chit-chat. Besides you can find many architectural buildings on this road to admire the mixture of Ugandan, Indian, and colonial art.

Relax at Buja Gali

Buja Gali is a small village about 8km towards the north of Jinja. It is the place to relax and to do adrenaline activities. You can take a Boda oda for 5000 USH($1.5) to reach there. Alternatively, you can take a matatu for 1000USh from the main bridge to reach there. You can find many hotels beside the Nile river to get a relaxed experience beside Nile river.

OTher Places to visit for extended stay in Uganda

After visiting Jinja, you can add a few extended options to the list of places to visit in your Uganda tour. Probably, you will come to Jinja after visiting Kampala and Entebbe. So, you can add the west of Uganda including Bwindi National park, Queen Elizbeth National park, and Lake Bunonyi. Moreover, this route is very feasible if you come or go to overland Rwanda. Optionally, you can extend your visit toward the east of Uganda while adding Elgon mountain as well as Sipi falls. Another option is to add the Ugandan North Side.

Things to do in Jinja keep on increasing every single year, and as a result, the town has gained a strong reputation of fun and adventure. For starters, Jinja was at one point the industrial powerhouse of East Africa . However, the expulsion of Asians in the late 1970s by the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin Dada resulted in the collapse of many industries as the Africans who replaced the Asians in the industries were too inexperienced to run them.

Even though Asians returned after Idi Amin was ousted from power, Jinja lost its crown as the leading industrial center of East Africa. Many of the industries relocated to Kampala and other towns, leaving Jinja a quiet and serene town perfect for tourism. Tourists visiting Jinja prefer to spend a night or two as the town has a lot to offer. In fact, it has been nicknamed the Adventure Capital of East Africa for the long list of things to do here. A day of white water rafting starts with early morning breakfast before being transferred to the banks of the river. You’ll then cover a distance of about 21 kilometres through eight big rapids, so prepare to be thrown out of the raft at least once.

2. Bungee Jumping

If there is one thing that Jinja is well known for is Bungee Jumping, an extreme adventurous activity that involves plunging yourself 43 metres down into open space before immersing yourself into the Nile River. Bungee Jumping is an activity much loved by thrill seekers and if you happen to be one of them, a trip to Jinja should be on your bucket list.

3. Quad Biking

Next on things to do in Jinja is quad biking. Riding the quad bikes offers you the opportunity to explore the farms and communities surrounding the Nile River as you slide across the puddles and potholes in mud. A free training session is conducted before the start of the activity, so you actually do not require prior driving experience. Quad biking is more fun when done as a group.

4. Horse Riding

It’s hard not to include horse riding when talking about things to do in Jinja. This is another activity done along the shores of River Nile and offers an opportunity to explore the beauty of Uganda . The horses are well trained and healthy to ensure there is no risk of injury when riding.

Horse riding is not available in many place in Uganda, so ensure you enjoy it during your trip to Jinja. If you love watching birds, this is your thing as you will encounter different species of birds in the process.

Jinja, Source of The Nile Adventures

Jinja, one of Uganda’s largest towns, has an attractively lush location on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, 80 kilometers east of Kampala .

The former industrial heartland sprawls the source of the mighty Nile, a point where the Nile flows out of Lake Victoria. And it’s the mighty river source that attracts visitors to Jinja rather than the moderately attractive colonial town.

Although its population of about 300k people makes it one of the largest urban centers in Uganda, Jinja is far from a metropolis that straddles the Nile. First-time visitors wandering around Jinja’s compact, low-rise town center might reasonably reflect what they expect of the country’s third-largest town!

Jinja suffered severely during the Amin years and subsequent periods of economic and political turmoil. Still, a more recent economic upswing has been mirrored by the emergence of the river corridor as a major tourism center in the region, emphasizing adrenalin-oriented activities.

Jinja magnet for adrenaline tourists is the thrilling series of grade-five rapids below Bujagali Falls. The rapids offer world-class whitewater rafting and have emerged as the most popular active-adventure tourist activity in eastern Uganda.

Most tourists will visit Jinja to explore its popular active adventure or see the origin of the world’s longest river. There is also a particular poignancy attached to standing on the slopes from where Speke first identified that geographical Holy Grail.

No less impressive is the knowledge that the water flowing past these green slopes will eventually drain into the Mediterranean, following a 6,500km journey through the desert wastes of Sudan and Egypt.

The town center admittedly boasts little of a genuine historical note for a city hiker. However, some fine colonial-era Asian architecture complemented by a spread of thickly vegetated residential suburbs carved from the surrounding jungle does give Jinja a compelling sense of place. The restored 1919 Madvhani House on Main Street is one of them you must seek out.

How to get to jinja town

Jinja lies along the surfaced Nairobi-Kampala road, 82km east of Kampala and 131km west of Tororo. The journey in a private vehicle can take about two hours because of heavy traffic in Kampala and slow trucks along the way.

On the outskirts of Jinja, the road from Kampala crosses the Owen Falls Dam on a magnificent cable-suspend bridge. Shortly after, there is a roundabout where a right turn leads to the town center and a left turn to Bujagali Falls.

Regular minibus taxis to Jinja leave Kampala all day from the old taxi park for about 20,000 shillings. Many public transport vehicles leave Jinja for Tororo and Mbale via Iganga. And all reputable rafting companies offer transfers from Kampala as part of their rafting package.

Because of the heavy traffic exiting Kampala, many regular commuters between Kampala and Jinja now prefer a northern route via Gayaza and Kayunga to the increasingly slow and congested main Jinja highway. The alternative is 30km longer, but the road allows a quiet, safe, and enjoyable drive while the journey takes the same time.

To get to Gayaza, head north out of Kampala through either Wandegere junction or Mulago hospital roundabout. These roads meet after 1km at a roundabout where you take a right (turn left, and you’ll head to northern Uganda).

Alternatively, head north to Gayaza from Ntinda past the Ndere Troupe Centre. The initial section leaving Kampala is pretty hectic. Still, beyond Gayaza, a quiet road runs to Jinja (the road emerging onto the Kampala—Jinja highway opposite Nile Breweries at Owen Falls Dam). This road is recommended to travelers headed to Kalagala Falls, the Haven, and Hairy Lemon Island on the west bank of the Nile.

Attractive adventures in Jinja

This lovely course, overlooking the Nile and at one time famous for games interrupted by a stray hippo , is open to non-members for 15,000 shillings per round (UGX 25,000 at weekends). Golf clubs are available. Visitors who want to use the 10m x 25m swimming pool, squash, or tennis courts can also pay 10,000 shillings.

Keen golfers may also wish to stop at the Mehta Golf Club in Lugazi, midway between Kampala and Jinja. The Asian owners of the town’s sugar factory have created an utterly surreal golfing paradise in a lush valley hidden from the vulgar gaze of the masses toiling in the factory and the surrounding cane plantations. You can also enjoy good curry lunches at the restaurant.

Kayaking and rafting the Nile’s white waters

Two-day rafting trips are also available through Nile River Explorers and Adrift, two prominent whitewater rafting operators in the country.

The first day covers the same ground as the day excursion, with an extra rapid called Novocain tagged at the end. On the second morning, you traverse four more rapids: Hair of the Dog, Kula Shaker, Nile Special, and Malalu. After lunch, the going is smoother, though the day culminates with one last rapid called Weleba.

Kayaking Bujagali is also a top spot for kayaking, attracting experienced proponents worldwide. More testing than rafting, kayaking offers the opportunity to develop your rafting skills rather than just bouncing along in a raft controlled by professionals. The companies also offer courses and expeditions.

The expeditions start at the company’s camp (raftafrica.com or adrift.com) at Bujagali Falls. Instructors trained to the UK’s BCU standard manage the daily excursions.

A one-day introductory course costs $140, and you can progress to more extended and more testing two-day ($235), three-day ($330), and five-day $500. Gentler cruises explore calmer stretches of the river using open-top kayaks at $75 for a full day with packed lunch from Jinja’s Indulge deli.

Quad biking

Quad-biking trips out of Bujagali are another famous active adventure activity in Jinja that usually explores stunning Nile viewpoints using local footpaths and tracks. Day rates range from 65k shillings ($35) per person for an hour-long ride to $125 per person for a nine-hour day with lunch—two to three-day trips to explore the Nile Valley are also available.

Bungee Jumping

Another major step in Bujagali’s development as east Africa’s answer to the more southerly adventure-activity capital of Victoria Falls is a 44m bungee jump located at Adrift (adrift.ug) between Jinja and Bujagali.

For 200k shillings ( Ugandans ) or $115 (foreigners), jumpers leap from a 12m cantilevered steel structure on top of a 32m cliff above the Nile River. If one jump isn’t enough, you can take a second one at a discount, and the third is free.

If you have a whitewater rafting package with Adrift, the bungee jump operators, a jump will cost you much less. Following complaints from local people (presumably those equipped with telescopes), clothing is now mandatory for daytime jumps. Naked bungee jumping is currently permitted only at night and at the discretion of the management.

A relaxing Nile river cruise on a private boat, canoe, or launch boat is a perfect way to spend an evening at the mighty river’s source.

Jinja: Ten things to do at the Source of the Nile

Jinja is a town located in the Eastern part of Uganda, along the northern shores of Lake Victoria. The town is found about 80 kilometers away from Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Jinja is famous internationally mainly because it is the source of the great River Nile but has over the years gained a reputation of fun and adventure. It is now popularly known as the Adventure Capital of East Africa for her long list of adrenaline activities and other tourism-related activities. Jinja’s natural scenery as a result of being close to two major water bodies – the Nile and Lake Victoria, with exciting multiple tourist attractions, has rendered it a top tourist destination in Uganda.

There’s an exciting experience for all kinds of tourists, making Jinja one of the best places to visit in Uganda. Some of the amazing tourist experiences available are as shown below:

• White water Rafting

White water rafting is one of the top tourist attractions in Jinja that takes you through different grades of rapids. The white water rafting experience in Jinja is said to be of high quality because it has several grade 4 and 5 rapids. Most of the rafting is done at the Kalagala and Itanda falls. White water rafting in Jinja involves maneuvering through strong waves and rapids using tube boats (filled with air) on the mighty Nile. While rafting on the waters of the Nile, participants pass through some breath-taking scenery and landscape along the margins of the river. There is also wildlife species like birds, monkeys, butterflies and vegetation. Very few tour activities can compare to the experience of white water rafting on River Nile.

2. Bunjee Jumping

This is an adrenaline pumping experience that will taste anyone’s resolve to the full. It is where one is plunged about 43 meters down into open space before being partly immersed into the Nile water at the Nile High Bungee. Bungee jumping is an activity much loved by those who want to test the limits of their adventure spirits. The experience can be very frightening but travelers love it as it is one way of showing your braveness. However, one needs to be at least 13 years and above to take part. The person must also be free of any underlining illness like a heart attack, hypertension and more.

3. Kayaking and Canoeing

Kayaking on the Nile river in Jinja involves canoeing on the white water rapids of the amazing Nile at a very slow pace. Kayaking or Canoeing on the Nile exposes one to the incredible biodiversity and landscape surrounding the Nile river. It is a great way to experience the river up close. This is a newly introduced activity along the Nile. It involves floating on the waters of the river Nile on air-pressured tubes. As participants float on the Nile, they have opportunities to go up to the main Jinja bridge and experience the amazing landscape. They can also watch monkeys, birds, tides and rapids from a distance. Tubing the Nile is a very cool thing to engage in and there are safety measures in place to ensure that no harm comes your way.

5. Quad Biking

Quad biking is one of the popular tourist activities that takes adventure to a whole other level and does not require prior driving experience. It involves riding on a four-wheeled motorbike in some of the remotest parts of the town. The bikes will take you past the rural villages, forests, sugarcane plantations and along rarely seen sections of the Nile river. The Quad biking experience is very adventurous and can be taken by almost anyone irrespective of whether they have experience with the bikes or not. Lessons are given to all amateurs before going out into the countryside. A free training session is conducted before each safari and trips are tailored to suit the riders’ ability and give the best possible adventure. Sliding across the puddles and potholes in mud makes quad biking much more fun.

6. Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is a thrilling outdoor activity done on village trails, bridge paths, and forest road in order to enjoy the long riding experience with a spectacular viewing of the natural wonders alongside the road. It is always interesting but doing it in the beautiful countryside of Africa is something else. The horse riding experience in Jinja takes between 1 to 3 hours and takes you to explore the rural communities, the river Nile and the beautiful landscape surrounding it. Participants are guided by an experienced guide who knows all the routes. One does not need to have any experience riding horses because there is a training session before the real thing.

Cycling offers a different experience from quad biking because it is more physical and drains more energy. However, the activity is equally adventurous depending on the route you take.

Cyclists are provided with a mountain bike and a guide to take them on an interesting journey of discovery beyond what the Quad bikes can provide. Using a mountain bike, one can go further into the sugar plantations, community villages, the river Nile and even up to Jinja town itself. Cycling doesn’t have a time-frame and can be hired for a whole day. If you want to have an amazing encounter with nature, you can choose to do the biking in Mabira forest . In this case, you will be driven with your bike to the starting point in Mabira forest. While in Mabira forest, expect to encounter primates, birds, butterflies and the local people.

8. Visiting the source of the Nile

It is in Jinja where the Nile starts its journey to North Africa. There is a landmark at the point where the waters leave Lake Victoria through a depression/gorge before spreading out and turning into what is called the River Nile. The source of Nile monument is one of the most historical sites and a must visit when one visits the source of the Nile. On a typical trip to visit the source of the Nile, visitors stand on a group a rocks to spot the watermark from a distance or take a boat to the actual source of the Nile, but this depends on the volume of water or tides. After spotting the source of the Nile mark, visitors take photos next to a sign post and then visit one of the many craft shops to buy souvenir and crafts.

9. Bird Watching

Uganda is one of the best destinations for bird watching in the world and Jinja is one of the best birding safari destinations in Uganda. The closest major airport to Jinja is Entebbe International Airport (EBB), which is located near the capital city, Kampala. After arriving at Entebbe, you can either take a domestic flight to Jinja’s Kiira Airport or proceed by road.

Tourist Attractions and Things To Do in Jinja

Jinja is a town located in the Eastern part of Uganda, along the northern shores of Lake Victoria. The town is found 80 kilometers away from Kampala which the capital of Uganda. Jinja is famous internationally mainly because it is the source of the great River Nile. It is in Jinja that the river Nile leaves Lake Victoria and starts a 6,650km journey to Egypt. Jinja derives its name from the huge rocks that were found in the area along the river Nile. Most of the rocks were covered in water after the construction of the Owen falls dam in 1956. The dominant tribal group in Jinja are the Bantu speaking Basoga. Jinja has always been an area of great importance to Uganda even before independence from the British. It was one of the first areas to be identified for urban development by a planner from the colonial government known as Ernst May in 1948. The plan of the town was excellent and using it, the colonial government built good roads and organized estates.

Jinja is slowly getting back to its former glory with many of the industries now up and running. The main industry in Jinja are Kakira sugar works owned by Madhivani group of companies. This industry is the greatest employer of people in Jinja. There is also Nile Breweries limited which is the number one beer and wine distiller in Uganda. Nytil textile has also made a comeback but we cannot forget to mention MM steel factory. In Kiira Motors, Jinja has the only car manufacturing plant in Uganda. Finally, there are the renovated local markets, milling plants and large merchandise shops.

Things to do in Jinja

Bungee Jumping: This is even more nerve-racking than Jet Boating and will taste your resolve to the full. A cliff tower was built along the shores of the Nile at a height of 44 meters high so that people can safely jump towards the waters with a rope tied to their feet/legs. The experience can be very frightening but travelers love it as it is one way of showing your braveness. The experience costs about $115 but one needs to be at least 13 years and above to take part.  The person must also be free of any underlining illness like a heart attack, hypertension and more.

Kayaking and Canoeing: This activity involves canoeing on the Nile at very slow pace. The experience costs about $125 for a whole day activity. Canoeing on the Nile exposes one to the incredible biodiversity and landscape surrounding the Nile. Those who book the activity are always given instructions, basic skills on how to row a boat and defence mechanisms in case of an incident while sailing. Life jackets are provided for everyone at no extra fee.

Visiting Mabira Forest: This is one of the largest remaining tropical rain-forests in Uganda. Unfortunately, a large size of it has been destroyed a s result of human activities and urbanization. It is now smaller than its original size but still allows for great adventure and exciting activities for those who love nature. Mabira is located in Buikwe district – between Mukono and Jinja. The main activities carried out in Mabira forest is camping, bird watching and nature walks.

Launch Cruise along the River Nile:  This boat cruise is organized starting from the area around the source of the Nile area (Lake Victoria) and also at the Bujagali lake (formed as a result of the construction of a power dam). The one starting from around the source of the Nile takes you towards the newly constructed bridge, fishing villages and the resorts along the shores of River Nile. The Bujagali lake launch cruise also offers beautiful sights of the different flora and fauna along the banks of river Nile. Tourists can also spot the popular structures that make Jinja such a lovely town to live in. As with every launch cruise, there is a lot of partying, drinking and eating which is free as long as one has paid.

Tubing the Nile: This is a newly introduced activity along the Nile. It involves floating on the waters of the river Nile on air-pressured tubes. As participants float on the Nile, they have opportunities to go up to the main Jinja bridge and experience the amazing landscape. They can also watch monkeys, birds, tides and rapids from a distance. Tubing the Nile is a very cool thing to engage in and there are safety measures in place to ensure that no harm comes your way.

Accommodation while in Jinja city

As an urban area and one of the major tourism destinations in Uganda, Jinja has got several accommodation facilities. They range from the lodges, hotels, campsites, guesthouses, apartments, dormitories to hostels. There is always something for everyone because the facilities range from budget to ultra-luxury hotels.

2 Friends Guesthouse : This is a budget/mid-range accommodation facility offering both single and twin rooms with modern toilets, a shower, a television set and a sturdy desk. The Guesthouse has a very spacious and clean swimming pool for its clients to cool off after adventures out in the sun.  2 Friends Guesthouse will appeal to guests looking for budget or mid-range rooms. The guesthouse was established in 2002.

Bilkon Hotel: Bilkon Hotel offers 64 self-contained with double or single beds. It is considered a mid-range accommodation facility and all rooms are self-contained. The Hotel offers amenities like conference rooms, spa/massage, aerobics, a gym and gardens for weddings. Food is excellent because they host a lot of local workshops, weddings and government meetings. The hotel is located along the road leading to Kampala from Jinja.

Gately on the Nile: This is a mid-range accommodation facility found on the same road where Makerere University (Jinja campus) and 2 Friends Guesthouse are located. The rooms are in form of family chalets with single and double beds. Room service is available throughout the day as is Wi-Fi and laundry services. There is also bar and restaurant serving both local and continental dishes.

Source of the Nile hotel: This is one of the best luxury hotels in Jinja. The source of the Nile hotel stands out because its hidden away from the noise in the town center making it a perfect place to relax over the weekend. The lodge is built on the banks of the Nile hence offering great views of the water body. All rooms are self-contained and contain single or double beds. The hotel has a conference hall which hosts national and international meetings. Expect to get some of the most hospitable and professional staff around.

Sunset Hotel International: This is a 3-star hotel which is ideal for travelers looking for a quality mid-range hotel with self-contained rooms. The hotel has 68 rooms with double and single beds. Each room has wireless internet, a bathroom and toilet. Other amenities in the hotel include a bar, a restaurant, conference facilities, a parking lot and a duty-free shop. Sunset Hotel International is built within the town centre.

Jinja Safari Hotel: This accommodation facility offers luxury rooms with great views of the river Nile. It is near the Jinja golf course and the source of the Nile. The rooms are self-contained with each having a study desk and a private balcony. There is also free Wi-Fi, room services and a battler to help carry luggage to the room. Other amenities include laundry services, a bar and restaurant with different kinds of food.

Bridge Way Guest House: This budget Guest House is located close to the source of the Nile. It has standard but self-contained rooms with a toilet, a shower and a study desk. It has beautiful gardens for relaxation and that is if there is wedding event or a big social gathering.

The Mansion Hotel: This hotel is built in an area where most of the prominent businessmen and politicians of Jinja reside. It is also where Jinja’s middle and high class residents like to hangout in. Everything in the hotel is elegant starting with the rooms, bar, restaurant and gardens. The name “Jinja” originates from the languages of the two tribes, the Baganda and the Basoga, who lived on either side of the Nile River in the region. The word “Jinja” means ” Stone or Rock” in both languages. In most of Africa continent, waterways like the Nile hampered movement of people. This explains the ethnic boundaries along the Nile River as one moves north from the river’s source on the northern shores of Lake Victoria.

But the area around Jinja was large flat granite rocks where small boats could be launched to cross the river. This partly explains why, despite this barrier, the two tribes have very similar languages. The word for stones or rocks in the language of the Baganda is ‘Ejjinja (Plural Amayinja), and for the Basoga dialect this became “Edinda”. Because the temperatures are pleasant year-round, rainfall is the primary factor affecting your experience in Jinja. Uganda has two dry seasons and two wet seasons.

The dry season months from June to August and December to February are considered the best time to visit Uganda , and the same applies to Jinja.

The dry season of December to February coincides with summer breaks in Europe and the United States, when family safaris are popular, so it is an excellent opportunity to visit Africa. And a visit to Jinja during this period would also work very well when extending out to Serengeti in Tanzania for the Wildebeest Migration experience of the calving season.

Mabira Forest is located about 20 minutes’ drive from Jinja. Actually while traveling from Kampala to Jinja you go through this green expanse of forest located along the Kampala – Jinja highway.

Mabira is the biggest natural forest in the central region of Uganda. It spans 306 square kilometers and home to a number of wildlife such as monkeys, months, butterflies, squirrels, reptiles, plants, trees, birds, etc. The forest normally does not miss on itineraries of nature lovers going on a day trip to Jinja. On the way to Jinja one can stop over for bird watching, zip lining, nature walk, mangabey monkey tracking, mountain biking, picnic and camping.

2. Sezibwa Falls

Sezibwa Falls is another great spot located 30 minute drive on the Kampala – Jinja highway. It also provides a nice stopover on trips to Jinja . Here, you can enjoy a hike to see the beautiful waterfall and take in the lovely natural surrounding. You can also learn about the cultures and traditions associated with the place.

Sezibwa is an important Buganda Cultural Site where traditional worship of ancestral spirits is still practiced. There is an interesting tale that the Sezibwa falls and the river were created by strong spirits which then decided to stay at Sezibwa.

The traditionalists then set up shrines at the site to worship and make sacrifices to these spirits in return for blessings and favors. A site attendant will take you on a guided nature and cultural walk to explore the natural beauty of the falls and cultural heritage.

3. Kagulu Hill Hike

Jinja is not a known destination for hiking. But Kagulu hill is a famous hill with cultural and historical significance. It is known for being the first settlement of the Basoga people who occupy Jinja. Standing at 3048 m, the hill is worthy a day’s hike for the hiking enthusiasts and rock climbing lovers. It is also a good place those seeking to learn more about the traditions of the people in this area. Kagulu is also located in Buyende district about 2 hours’ drive from Jinja.

4. Sipi Falls Tour

Sipi Falls are arguably the most beautiful waterfalls in Uganda. The falls are quite a distance away from Jinja, farther in eastern Uganda, however it is a highlight worthy including on the trip to Jinja for the hiking enthusiasts. Sipi falls are located in the foothills of Mount Elgon – Africa’s eighth highest mountain at 4321 meters. The drive from Jinja to Sipi is about 3 hours. Jinja in Uganda: tips and the best things to do in the adventure capital of Africa!

Just two hours from the capital Kampala, the relaxed city of Jinja seems to be a completely different world. You will find hip restaurants, cool hotels and a whole lot of adventure here. In this travel guide, I will tell you everything you need to know about Jinja! Which hotel to pick for Jinja, where to eat and most importantly, what to do in this highlight of Uganda?

Jinja – Highlight of Uganda!

Oh Jinja, how nice you are! After a far too long, late bus ride we arrive in Jinja, exhausted and warm. The first thing we do: order an iced coffee from Java Coffee House and enjoy their air conditioning. Sticky, without sleep and in travel clothes, we look around. It is clear that we are out of tune, being surrounded by a mix of yoga chicks, laid back surfer dudes, ex-pats and stunning local ladies. The atmosphere is somewhat reminiscent of Ubud in Bali, a feeling that will continue to dominate the next three days.

Rafting on the Nile in Jinja!

Although it rains all day, Ries has a great time! Fortunately, the Nile water is quite warm because the boat often topples due to the many difficult descents! As soon as that happens, however, there is always a crew member in kayak ready to get everyone back into the boat as quickly as possible! After a well-deserved beer at the end of the day, he returns to the hotel exhausted but cheerful.

Fun activities in Jinja!

1. class 3, 4 or 5 white water rafting in jinja.

Well, after such a cool experience from Ries, rafting should be the number one activities in Jinja. Ries booked the full day class 5 raft trip (click on the link for more information). There are five rafters in each boat that are accompanied by crew members in kayaks. Ries paid $140 for a whole day including lunch, equipment, protection and a beer afterwards.

2. Nile cruise (sunset cruise / day cruise) in Jinja

Even though I didn’t join the rafting trip, I had to see the Nile! That’s why I went on a two-hour Nile Sunset Cruise. Sipping from a Gin and Tonic (open bar + all you can eat) while spotting otters, beautiful birds and a beautiful sunset, this was a fun (though a bit overpriced) night. We booked this Nile Sunset Cruise at our hotel (click here for more information) and paid $ 45 per person (there is a combination deal with a $ 25 discount if you are also going rafting).

3. Suppen, Riverboarding and River kayaking in Jinja

In addition to rafting and a Nile cruise, you can also go supping, kayaking or boarding on the Nile. The latter two seem to be very adventurous. Don’t feel like being active at all? At the Explorers River Camp, we saw two people in a hammock mounted on top of a surfboard and being pulled by a kayaker. Something very different, floating on the Nile with a cocktail in a hammock.

4. Mountain biking in the Jinja area

As a true Dutchie, I cannot help but also place cycling here as an activity. In Jinja, you can enjoy mountain biking along the Nile, take a historical bike tour or go into the rainforest. 5. Stroll through the centre of Jinja

Jinja is my favourite place in Uganda. It is a quiet and spacious city with lots of greenery. In the main street of Jinja (Main Street), you will find all kinds of nice and trendy restaurants. You will find The Deli and The Source Café here. In addition, this street is nice to walk around a bit, to visit a bookstore or souvenir shop or to walk all the way to the quay of Lake Victoria…

Restaurants in Jinja!

• The Deli: Healthy smoothies, wraps and tasty breakfasts. More than enough other travellers and a lot of healthy yoga chicks! That just sums up The Deli! Also nice, it has a small shop with international products, with for example the bread from Dutch baker BBrood (my favourite baker in the Netherlands)!
• The Source Cafe: The hangout for expats with good wifi and tasty coffee. Includes a small gift shop. Prices are a lot higher than in local restaurants.
• Java Coffee House: The Starbucks of East Africa. Tasty coffee, super friendly service and my favourite drink: the green smoothie with ginger (#yogachick ;-))
• Gately on the Nile: This chic restaurant exudes Balinese style and seems to have delicious Thai and international dishes. Certainly, a place that we will visit next time!
• House of Snacks: Our first experience with Ugandan cuisine and we are completely ruined. What do I say, in Uganda, we have not eaten as good local food as here. You pay 7,500 UGX (not even 2 euros) and for that, you get a buffet with all delicious dishes!

Location Of Jinja City

Jinja City is located in the eastern region of Uganda, on the northern shores of Lake Victoria. It is situated approximately 80km (or a 2-hour drive) east of Kampala , the capital city of Uganda . A Brief History Of Jinja

The site where Jinja City is was of no particular significance until 13,000 years ago when a shift in the tectonic plates underlying the Western Rift Valley relocated the outlet of Lake Victoria. The event also caused the natural granite rock to partially block the flow of water out of the lake. Local peoples named the granite “ejjinja,” which means “stone” in Luganda. This is where the modern-day Jinja City gets its name.

Jinja made its mark in history on August 3 rd , 1858 when John Hanning Speke, a British explorer, arrived from Zanzibar. This was no ordinary trek for Speke. Since the time of Julius Caesar, finding the source of the River Nile in Jinja had been considered the epitome of successful African exploration. The journey also held personal significance for Speke, as he and his friend, fellow explorer Richard Burton, had a progressive dispute about the location of the source of the Nile. On that day in August, Speke solved one of the greatest mysteries in history when he discovered that the cascade of water over the granite/ejjinja is the source of the Nile.

As the world celebrated Jinja’s significance as the source of the Nile River, the people of Jinja continued to develop their livelihoods. And with the arrival of British colonial rule in 1906 and later the Indians, Jinja began to grow as a trading center. And, after the arrival of hydroelectricity and the railroad, Jinja became the industrial capital of Uganda.

During the 1970’s difficult political crises, Jinja’s trading and manufacturing economies suffered.

Source Of The Nile In Jinja

The source of the Nile is one of the most iconic Uganda tourist attractions in Jinja . It is the point at which the world’s longest river leaves Africa’s largest lake to commence an epic 6,863km journey north to Egypt, where it flows into the Mediterranean Sea.

Jinja’s source of the Nile has long been disputed. In 1837, the German Explorer, Burkhart Waldecker claimed that the source could be traced further back to the headwaters of the River Kagera, the largest river that feeds Lake Victoria. In 2006, explorers from the UK and New Zealand posited that the true source is in Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda . Notwithstanding all the claims, the Nile River does indeed leave Lake Victoria at submerged Ripon Falls in Jinja.

The Speke Monument one of Uganda’s tallest monuments stands in the exact place where John Speke first beheld the ‘Mighty Nile’. The authentic monument is located on a picturesque hill on the west bank of the Victoria Nile with panoramic views of Lake Victoria and the great River Nile.

Lake Victoria can be experienced in several places in Uganda, Kenya , and Tanzania but Jinja is one of the best places as you can combine it with your visit to the source of the Nile River .

Magnificent, regal, and awe-inspiring in its grandeur! Perhaps these were words that crossed Speke’s mind when he first stood on the shores of Lake Victoria in 1858. His quest for the source of the Nile led him to the banks of a massive body of water that he named Victoria, after the then Queen of the United Kingdom.

Measuring 681000km 2 , Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest lake and the second-largest freshwater lake in the world after Lake Superior in North America.

Markets, Churches & Old Indian Buildings In Jinja City

The first foreign settlers in Jinja before independence were Indians.

Most came to Jinja because of trade and to work for the British colonial administrators in factories and during the construction of the railway line. Later, these Indians settled and opened up shops. When Idi Amin expelled them out of Uganda in 1972, they left behind buildings and industries. Some were taken over by Ugandans while others remained dilapidated and monuments in the town.

Apart from visiting the old buildings, Jinja also has large markets selling foodstuff and souvenirs. You can also pay a visit to some of the old churches to marvel at the architectural designs.

Kyabazinga Royal Palace in Jinja City

Kyabazinga palace on Igenge Hill is the perfect place to learn about the traditions, culture, and history of the Basoga people of Busoga Kingdom.

In March 2020, His Highness Kyabazinga William Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope IV started living in the official palace in Bugembe Town Council in Jinja District. Kyabazinga’s palace has been unoccupied for six years due to renovation by the government of Uganda. Busoga became a kingdom in 1906 when only it had no central ruler.

The king was installed with the help of the British. In Busoga, some of the chiefs were appointed by the Kabaka of Buganda Kingdome and given authority to rule the land in Busoga.
